Graham Stuart MP Community policing in Beverley and Holderness is in the spotlight. I have never had as many people write to me to complain about crime as they did last year, with constituents from Beverley, Hedon, Hornsea and Withernsea highlighting their personal experiences.

In October I wrote to Chief Constable Justine Curran about our policing provision in response to these concerns. In a deeply disappointing reply the Chief Constable told me, “Holderness remains a low crime area and is a safe place to live… residents’ fear of crime is often greater than the reality.”

“13% rise in crime in Hull and the East Riding in the twelve months to September 2016” I met our local Police and Crime Commissioner, Keith Hunter, in December to question whether the Chief Constable had got her priorities right in this area.

Since our meeting things have developed further. In late January, figures from the Office of National Statistics revealed a 13% rise in crime in Hull and the East Riding in the twelve months to September 2016. In the

East Riding there was a sharp rise in burglaries from non-domestic premises like shops and warehouses (up 18%), violence against the person (26%) and robbery (up 50%).

Those crime figures belied the Chief Constable’s assurances that people in Holderness have an exaggerated fear of crime.

I am glad the Police and Crime Commissioner, who is responsible for the performance of the local Police, has now acted to replace the Chief Constable. It is vitally important that Humberside Police, who are a dedicated and brave body of men and women, are given new leadership to fight back against those seek to prey on our communities. I know I speak for everyone in the constituency when I say they will have our full support.

TRADERS AND PERFORMERS WANTED NOW FOR LOCAL TEENAGE MARKETS After the phenomenal success of last summer’s Teenage Market, the FSB, along with the Flemingate Centre, will be hosting a second market in June 2017, offering a great opportunity for young people to experience the excitement of selling to the shoppers of East Yorkshire or performing in front of a live audience.

Flemingate is excited to be holding its second Teenage Market on Sunday 4 June. The event will run from 10am-4pm and will welcome young people aged 13-25 to get involved and showcase their talents and entrepreneurial spirit.

We are delighted to invite all young entrepreneurs and performers to help create a great event for our town. The vibrancy and excitement that young people generate will bring a festival atmosphere to the shopping centre. It is completely FREE to take part and we hope that traders will take away large amounts of cash. Participants don’t have to be established traders or performers either.

We hope that through this important event, a whole new generation of entrepreneurs is discovered. The Teenage Market offers a vital opportunity for young traders to experience face-to-face selling for the first time.

Having the ability and confidence to make a sales pitch is an invaluable attribute for any teenager who fancies a career in business. Here’s a chance for them to hone their pitch and perfect their selling skills.

Guests were greeted with a glass of wine on arrival, followed by an interesting talk by owner and event organizer, Anne Hodgson, on how hats and fascinators are made, the fabrics used and different types of feathers used in the designs and how they are dyed.

Finally, the guests had the opportunity of looking around the shop and workshop and were able to try on hats from the vast selection available.

Last year the event raised over £250 for this worthwhile charity and Anne is hoping that this year the money raised will be even higher!

Rallying call urges support to create a ‘better Beverley’ Residents, businesses and organisations in Beverley have been urged to rally behind a new drive to promote all that is great about the town.

The call came at the launch of Destination Beverley, a new independent partnership dedicated to driving visitor numbers, footfall and spend in the town. Destination Beverley is made up of representatives of the town’s leading attractions, Beverley Racecourse and Beverley Minster, as well as the Flemingate centre, traders and individuals with relevant skills and a passion for the town.

Sally Iggulden, Chair of Destination Beverley and Chief Executive of Beverley Racecourse, told guests representing a broad range of businesses, organisations and community groups: “We want to work together with local people, groups and organisations so that we fulfil a broad agenda and don’t duplicate the excellent work already being carried out. It’s all about having a joined-up approach to creating an even better Beverley.

“To make this work and create an even better Beverley, we need to all work together. This evening you will all be presented with a badge of honour. I would like to invite all of you present to be our first chosen ambassadors for Beverley. Wear your badge wherever you go and, when people ask you about it, tell them just what it means to you to represent Beverley.

“I want you to all think about why you love living here, or working here, or why you have your business based here … what makes it such a special place and why have you chosen Beverley above all other places? Encourage others around you – work colleagues, friends and family – to join in and spread the word.”

The launch event, held at East Riding College in Beverley, heard Destination Beverley’s agenda was summed up by the key themes of Visit, Spend, Stay and Enjoy, with a mission to: l Drive visits and return visitors to Beverley. l Increase spending with the town’s businesses and attractions. l Encourage people to stay in Beverley so they spend more time and money in the town. l And support initiatives to ensure a great experience for visitors.

Sally Iggulden added: “We have all been busy marketing our own businesses in Beverley, spending lots of money and reaching a fair amount of people, but this is the first time the main visitor attractions have sat round a table and formed a partnership.

“The combined passion and joinedup thinking is what will really drive the objectives of Destination Beverley.”

Fellow Board member David Bird, owner of longestablished Beverley business Carol Bird Interiors in the town’s Georgian Quarter, revealed Destination Beverley had linked up with Spacehive, a successful crowdfunding platform which has helped to fund more than 250 projects across the UK since 2012.

“Destination Beverley will work with Spacehive to promote Beverley-based projects that residents would like to bring to fruition. We will promote these and others via our website, social media channels and media coverage.

“We may also choose to donate directly to a project and we have funds to do exactly that. I would urge local people to support these projects to help to make them a success.”

The Destination Beverley launch also featured the first showing of a new video showcasing the very best of Beverley and the launch of the new Destination Beverley website, as well as keynote speeches by Sir Gary Verity, Chief Executive of tourism agency Welcome to Yorkshire, and Rick Bailey, Chief Executive of Daniel Thwaites Plc, the company redeveloping the Beverley Arms Hotel.

Sir Gary said Beverley was one of Yorkshire’s “jewels in the crown” as it was rich in history and heritage, had two stunning churches, a thriving town centre full of independent retailers, a new, contemporary shopping centre, a racecourse and so much more.

“You’ve got all the ingredients to give visitors a fantastic time, whether they come for a day, a weekend or longer,” he said. “I can’t imagine anybody coming to Beverley and leaving disappointed.”

PROPERTY COLUMN I am selling, what could I do to improve my home to appeal to potential buyers’?

Now spring has sprung, in our office I heard ‘I am selling, what could I do to improve my home to appeal to potential buyers’?

There are several quick, low cost actions which can be done to improve the appeal as first impressions are important to ‘wow’ potential buyers. Remember those ‘little’ jobs that you were going to get around, to but never did have time, these should be done.

However, caution must be taken as although these may seem simple DIY jobs, the work must be up to a professional standard. It can be sometime more cost effective to hire a professional in the first place.

Look from the kerb side, are you making a good first impression. Does the outside paint require a lift? Are the windows and doors clean and grime free? If you have garden, are you making the most of it? Or are there the remains of last year’s blooms and an over grown lawn?

The inside must appeal to as many tastes as possible and you might consider redecorating in neutral colours. Neutral colours allow the buyer to image their colours schemes and how their furniture will look in the room. Flooring and carpets might have taken a battering over the winter, and depending on the age and wear the use of a floor cleaner might improve these. However, there might be times when even a floor cleaner might not work and you might consider new carpets.

Finally, there is the need to consider the appearance of the key rooms of the kitchen and bathroom. Although it is possible to spend significant amounts of money to refurbish these rooms, you need to consider the cost to potential benefits. A brand-new kitchen will have a ‘wow’ factor however the kitchen will have been designed to your requirements. There might be little points which a vendor will not apricate. Therefore, declutter and clean are cost-effective methods although you might consider minor replacements e.g. new shower head or matching accessories.

Although the above might appear to a lot of effort and potential cost, remember that you are working towards your move to your next home.

Saturday 15th There is a charity busking day in Beverley. In aid of Castle Hills Daisy Appeal. Musicians gather early afternoon in the town centre about 1pm somewhere near the Angel and the chaos starts. Great cause so please do support if you see these folks playing.

Also on Saturday 15th The Culture Train will be stopping at Cottingham and loosing some fine musicians including myself to play the Hallgate Tavern.

The Culture Train stops in Beverley for a free concert at St Mary’s Church on Saturday 6th May featuring The Mighty & The Moon (below), Cuba Drive, The Happy Endings and Urban Rain.

Burma

a mysterious land...

For several years I have been looking for the perfect itinerary to explore the country of Myanmar which is not a regular place to visit yet on the tourist trail.

Ideally we did not want a Japanese endurance test packing and unpacking, hopping on and off internal flights etc. Most river cruises still today only offer 4 nights from Mandalay to Bagan or 7 nights from Mandalay to Salay (a UNESCO site) which still did not allow you to see enough of the country.

In 2015 APT launched a selection of 14 night cruises along the Irrawaddy, 2016 was full in no time so I had to opt to wait until 2017. I waited patiently for our holiday, not sure what I was to find!

We had a most enjoyable relaxing holiday cruising from Mandalay down to Yangon (Rangoon) which was definitely the right direction as it just got more interesting by the day. We visited remote villages where we felt like film stars, I can quite honestly say I have never had my photo taken so many times - I am a scenery only photographer!

The Burmese people are very happy folk and greeted us with nothing but smiles. There life is simple, living in simple houses often made of woven rattan yet with modern touches of a solar panel, TV, satellite dish and of course mobile smart phones for those many photographs they take.

A holiday in Burma is all about the people, Buddhism and there daily way of life including their daily markets. Many of their goods are still hand crafted. There was every choice of fresh fruit and vegetables that you could imagine possible many introduced during the British occupation. Transport was the usual sight in the Far East, pile as many in as you can. Cars, bikes and trucks are mostly old and repaired again and again. There is one train a day from Mandalay to Yangon which takes 22 hours, hence grass grows freely between the tracks.

The most fabulous Pagodas & Stupa were south of Bagan and their gold domes were a awesome sight.

A special moment was when we were included along with family members in a service for Monks being ordained into a monastery.

Mandalay to Bagan is the only touristy part of the country we visited and hawkers were following us everywhere to try and gain a sale but once we hit the countryside there was no such nonsense, prices in the markets where what the locals pay and bartering was not the order of the day.

The Burmese thanked us so much for visiting their country. Having visited Asia extensively Burma is a very different experience and the people will remain in my heart as the greatest memory.

I have a son who is 11. My parents have recently relocated down to the South Coast of England.

What do you do in your spare time?

I paint in my spare time. Visit www,markrodgersgallery.com I see my art as more of a hobby these days , than as a way of making a living. However, I do continue to paint commissions, recently of people’s pets who I meet on the car park. Last year I also appeared on Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year.

How would you describe Beverley to a visitor?

It’s a lovely small market town, with a stunning Minster. The building is as great an example of Gothic architecture as you are likely to see anywhere in Europe.

What do you like most about Beverley?

The people are very friendly in Beverley, and there is a wide variety of places to eat and drink. The Art Gallery at Treasure House has a fantastic collection of fine art. Most recently the Wildlife Photography Exhibition seems very popular.

If you could have dinner with anyone (alive or dead) who would it be and why?

I would have dinner with Van Gogh. Our language would present a problem, since I neither speak French or Dutch, but I’m sure over a few drinks we could share our enthusiasm for painting and maybe squeeze a game of pool in, like The Night Café painting in Arles.

What is your favorite food?

My favourite food is pasta. I love lasagne and salad.

When did you last go to the cinema and what did you see?

Trainspotting Two, which was one of the greatest cinematic experiences I have had in a long time. It was a roller-coaster of emotions. I may add, that Spud’s carpet is identical to my mum’s 70’s carpet design. A few of our old household objects seem to pop up as props on Eastenders, like a coffee table, biscuit tin ( my mother always did threaten to hide it well)or clock.

Briefly explain your working day and what your job entails?

My job involves making sure people manage their time positively whilst shopping in Beverley. I act as a referee to maintain tranquility on the busy Marks and Spencer’s car park. Occasionally , I have to issue a PCN if anybody drastically parks over the white line, preventing anybody else from parking beside them. Abuse of blue badges by abled body people is sometimes a concern.

What do you love most about your job?

I love sharing a joke, about people like Richard III ( by the way, I worked on the 1995 film starring Ian Mckellen- ) and making people smile or laugh. I see my job as a role in playing crime prevention. The cars are safe on my car park. I help elderly people load their cars up, and help people find a space.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?

In 10 years time, I would like to see myself as a financially independent artist selling more paintings to support myself , or perhaps I may become a teacher. A more realistic way of making a living.

MINDING THE MINSTER

The Ballad of the Minster Clock “My skills they stretch from there to here,” the Virger said full smartly, “But clocks, like maths, are mysteries, and understood but partly.”

“I’ll make you late!” the clock, it teased. “You soon will be confounded.”

“Indeed, the townsfolk have complained. I start to feel quite hounded.”

So up the steps the Virger climbed, intent to solve the issue.

But made it worse. “Oh no,” said she, and cried into a tissue.

To Scotland once the Virger went and there she met a friend: A Beadle in the church that’s there, with clocks galore to mend.

“How many clocks are yours to wind?” the Virger asked with awe.

“Forty-three” was the reply! (the floor, it met her jaw!)

The Virger knew that she was blessed at having only one, The Minster Clock had new ideas: “It’s time we had some fun!”

EXHIBITION BEGINS INTERNATIONAL TOUR IN BEVERLEY Petrus Alamire was a renowned 16th century composer, musical scribe, singer and producer of some of the most decorated illustrated choirbooks in history. Popular in many of the royal courts in Europe, he also took advantage of his position to spy for Henry VIII.

We are fortunate to be hosting an exhibition of his work from May 26 - July 16 in the Minster. It is a collaboration between the Alamire The Tower Captain, in the know, of all things Time-related, Foundation based in Belgium and Took Virger under wing and taught, and then she celebrated! the National Centre for Early For clock and chime were reconciled, the Virger was a star!

There are two parts to the exhibition. Twenty five high resolution photographs of Alamire’s illuminated manuscripts will be placed in the north transept and an art installation by Rudi Knoops will be placed in the south transept.

The art installation is a combination of sound and video in a performance of Alamire’s music for seven voices within a 5 metre high canopy. It is controlled by a sophisticated computer system operated from Belgium over the internet.

In addition to the exhibition there is an activity pack for children aged 5 11 funded by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

Entrance to the exhibition and art installation is free and is open between 09.00 and 17.00 (12.00 – 17.00 on Sundays).

We do this one most years so plan to go again this year as it’s a lovely trail and good day out.

If it’s wet there’s a new indoor attraction in St Stephens Shopping Centre Hull. Rock Up is a new indoor climbing experience for over 4s and a soft play for under 8s. I popped along to review it and had a great time! The review is on Mumbler to read.

The Deep have activities on for Easter to celebrate the arrival of their new Loggerhead Turtles including a turtle egg trail and turtle themed crafts. Also on 11th – 13th April is Movement & Music at The Deep, family workshops run by Opera North in singing and dance.

l Sewerby Hall near Bridlington have lots of Easter activities across the School Holidays. l Burton Constable near Skirlaugh have lots of children’s Easter activities on Easter Sunday and an Easter Trail running 15th – 23rd April.

Also in April, Beverley Races hold their first race of the season on 19th April starting at 12noon. White Rabbit in Easterland Day is the theme of the first race with a magical Alice in Wonderland themed Easter Egg Hunt, live theatre and free chocolate eggs for all the kids, as well as an afternoon’s racing. Under 18s are free so pack a picnic and this makes a cheap family day out.

There are a few children’s shows in Beverley too. The Be Our Guest Ball is at Parish Hall, Beverley Minster, 2-4pm on 10th April. This is being run by My Little

Brunch Loaf with Sundried Tomatoes, Olives and Basil GLUTEN-FREE, VEGETARIAN, GRAIN FREE Ingredients 5 free-range eggs, lightly beaten 1 garlic clove, finely diced 250 grams almond meal 1 rounded teaspoon gluten-free baking powder 135 grams grated sweet potato 100 grams grated cheddar cheese (or parmesan/not Vegetarian).

12 pitted black olives, each sliced in 3, across 6 sundried tomatoes, cut into ribbons 3 tablespoons olive oil or melted ghee A teaspoon of sea salt 1 cracked black pepper Pumpkin, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, Additional sliced black olives, to serve Method: Preheat oven to 165°C. Mix egg, garlic, almond meal and baking powder in a large bowl.

Add the remaining ingredients and stir until well combined.

Grease and line a 23cm loaf tin.

Use a spatula to fill the tin with the loaf batter and even out the surface.

Sprinkle with seeds and additional olives.

Bake for 50–60 minutes until golden and a skewer or knife comes out clean when inserted.

Let it cool for 45 minutes before slicing.

Makes 1 loaf.

City’s survival lies in their own hands and being able to defeat sides in the relegation dogfight. Two games in the first week in April are pivotal. West Ham on April 1st and Middlesborough on April 4th. Two wins and six points are vital. Following on from this are games against Sunderland and Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park at the beginning of May. Four victories, 36 points and a couple of draws elsewhere and who knows. As ever with Hull City fixtures always look easier on paper than on the grass. We have a long history of failing to take opportunities, who else could have four matches to seal promotion and needed a Leeds goal in the 93rd minute at Watford to take us to a promotion.

One aspect which has become noticeable during the Silva reign is that we may be better against the bigger teams than the sides who come to defend. Many of our loan signings, like Silva himself, are trying to make an impression in the Premier league and it is noticeable the drop in performances by N’Diaye and Markovic particularly in games not at the Emirates or against Liverpool. They are at Hull City for a reason and maybe their inconsistency elsewhere meant they were available for five months from their parent clubs. We appear to be good as building

defensive lines to stop attacking sides playing and mount counter attacks through our wingers or Niasse but we do struggle when other sides defend against us.

Hernandez is no use on his own without support, Grosicki looks dangerous till the moment of crossing the ball and he has thus far failed to beat the first defender with the vast majority of his final balls whilst Markovic is like another Bernard Mendy who also packs the correct boots to play in once a month. Maybe the answer is changing the system to play with Hernandez and Niasse in tandem. This combination brought the victory against Swansea after Niasse came on after the hour mark. At the beginning of January Premier League survival seemed unrealistic.

The defeat at West Brom filled me with despair and obviously this had the same impact on the owners with the removal of Phelan and arrival of Marco Silva. Sadly the the initial period of invincibility has come to an end and some of the old faults are resurfacing. Defensive errors, players going missing and a lack of potency upfront have been an issue all season. Realistically though it was always likely as the players we have are Championship or average Premier League players plus foreign loan signings trying to make an impact in the English league. We are not Manchester City, we can’t just sign or keep quality and all we can hope for his 100% commitment, good team organisation and some luck in games.

It may be a case of scoring from dead all situations and defending from now on but the towel has not be thrown in yet.

Former Hunsley pupil helps secure

£200k grant for Paralympics

Historic archives and artefacts dating back to the very origins of the Paralympic movement will be catalogued and conserved by the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies, due to the assistance of local resident Laura Cotton.

The archives department of Buckinghamshire County Council, in partnership with the National Paralympic Heritage Trust (NPHT), has been awarded a major grant of £175,566 by the Welcome Trust for cataloguing and conservation work on the vital records which track the origins of the Paralympic movement.

These will include patient records dating back to 1944, when Dr Ludwig Guttmann first set up the spinal injuries unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

In addition to those patient files, the archives of the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation and WheelPower will come into the scope of this exciting ‘Spinal to Sport’ project.

The award will fund three new members of staff to help complete the work, which will take two years.

County Archivist Laura Cotton who was instrumental in obtaining the funding said: “It is really exciting to be widening access to these records by cataloguing them and making them available to the public.

The Paralympic Games and the work done by Sir Ludwig Guttmann is extremely important to Buckinghamshire and we are immensely proud of the recognition this gets internationally.”

Grow Your Own Carrots It’s nice to see a vegetable on the plate which isn’t green. Carrots are not the easiest vegetable to grow, but they are not difficult either. A long cropping season is possible. 12 months of the year if the maincrop is properly stored in sand. Carrots do not really freeze well, even though people do freeze them.

A deep medium to sandy soil is best. Free of large stones preferably.

Heavier clay soils will grow carrots if they are well worked and improved.

Fresh manure should not be added before sowing.

In a 3 year rotation the carrots will go on the plot manured 2 years ago. Liming shouldn’t be needed unless the soil is below pH 6.5. Carrots do not require as high a pH as do Brassicas or Peas and Beans.

A nutrient content in balance suits carrots. Adjust soil according to soil test results, if a test has been carried out. Otherwise use a balanced general purpose fertilizer (NPK proportions 1:1:1 multiples of by percentage such as 10:10:10) Liquid feeding may be needed during growth. Water the crop frequently in dry spells, as carrots have a high water content, and therefore a need for plenty of water. If they get too dry, the roots will harden up, and then crack when soil returns to be being moist again.

Carrots can be anything from small round roots like golf balls to long tapering roots about 60cm long. Not many people will want either of those, and somewhere inbetween in best. Early varieties are usually stump rooted and grow to approximately 10 to 15cm long. Maincrop may be pointed or stump rooted and reach up to 25cm long.

The distance between rows varies, depending on the variety and circumstances. In cold frames or on hot beds an early variety needs only 15cm between the rows. Outdoor sowings require 25 to 30cm

between rows. To walk between the rows to hoe etc a distance of less than 25cm would make life difficult, even though carrot tops do not need very much space.

Sow thinly, and thinning will not be required. Just pull the largest first and leave the rest to develop. If thinned, 5cm should be enough, even for maincrop carrots. No-one wants enormous carrots anymore.

Carrot root fly is a real problem with carrots, but it shouldn’t be. It is very easy to prevent. There is no need to resort to chemicals either.

Organically grown carrots grown commercially are often full of carrot root fly larvae. I prefer my vegetables without maggots.

Gardeners may notice that the crops grown in Cold frames do not get effected, but outdoor crops do.

The reason is the carrot fly is a ground hopping insect, unable to jump higher than 30cm.

The cold frame effectively creates a barrier.

If a frame without its top is used to grow the outdoor crop during the summer then that too will not be effected. Have the sides 45cm high for good measure.

Of course organic Farmers with big fields cannot do this, which is why supermarket organic carrots often have been affected.

For non organic growing, effective chemical pesticides are available to the professional. Soil pesticides available to Amateurs do not seem to be very effective. Potent chemicals are just not allowed into the hands of Amateurs nowadays by law. The barrier method is better for both organic and non organic gardeners.

Pull young carrots throughout the season by successionally sowing up to June. Maincrop can be lifted and stored in Autumn. In milder and dryer areas it is possible to leave the crop in the ground overwinter and dig as required.

The best place to live!

Hull is now one of the best places to live in the country, according to the Sunday Times – and it’s all down to the City of Culture! They were also impressed by how well Hull University’s been doing. One journalist admitted that Hull gets a lot of unfair press and it’s written off by others who have never even visited!

They are preaching to the choir! Hull and East Yorkshire have so much to offer and we are finally being allowed to show off! On the same subject I also think that Beverley and some of the East Riding villages are a well kept secrets. I love my shopping and leisure trips with my girlfriends to Beverley with all it has to offer. The family trips are great too, the kids just love the new cinema in Flemingate and I must say that there are some fantastic eateries close by; and all just a short journey on the train, so that my other half can enjoy a glass of wine with his meal too. On a slightly different note, if you haven’t been to see the new sea turtles at The Deep, make sure you add it to your “To Do” list over the Easter holidays!

Why don’t people respect mini roundabouts?

I’m talking about those little roundabouts that I call spot islands. You know, the ones that are only very slightly raised and are painted white? I want to know why people just drive right over the top of them instead of going around them. I really don’t think they’re there just for fun! I see this on a regular basis travelling between Hessle Square, going towards Sainsburys. There are a few spot islands along there and I guarantee that at least half of the people pretend not to see them. If you were meant to drive over them, they wouldn’t be there in the first place!!

It never rains…….

Why is it that when your dishwasher stops working, your washing machine decides to go on the blink too and then your tumble drier starts leaking? Believe me, I have not been a happy bunny! Fortunately my husband managed to fix the washing machine! Apparently a bit of a sleeve was discovered in the filter, or somewhere like that, along with a 5 pence piece. Yes, we had wondered what had happened a few weeks ago when one of my son’s tops came out ripped! As to the 5p, it’s going towards buying us a new dishwasher. Saying that, I do find washing up strangely relaxing! Is it just me?!!!
