Welcome to the June edition. Tips for choosing a rug DNfourteen Magazine’s Jane Gough shares her passion and top tips for buying a new rug for your home So, here we are! It’s June. The rain showers, cold spells and all the other beasts are well and truly gone (I hope!). And finally the hopes that the summer is here or at least is on its way! About time, I’d say! June is also the time that we all like to give our homes a little summer spruce up (well, at least I do), buy something new and maybe bring a bit of colour in too.

So how about new living room rugs? Did you know that a new rug can completely transform the look of your room? Any room in fact! Those of you that know me will have probably seen me flaunting my new living room rug recently. And

to be honest, it is one of the best purchases I’ve made. So I guess that would make the flaunting totally understandable, right? Choosing a rug As much as I love my new rug, choosing one was not an easy decision to make. There are so many options out there. There are modern rugs, vintage rugs, oriental, Persian, indoor and outdoor rugs. It’s easy to get confused. l Go large: Avoid having a sad little rug floating in the middle of the room. Don’t be intimidated by scale: the purpose of a rug is to create impact and interest, and a rug that is lost in a room won’t achieve either. l Layer up: Layering rugs or having multiple rugs in one room is a really good way to approach covering the floor, and lets the eye travel. You can layer or position the rugs in different directions and accommodate odd room shapes, too. l Spend vs, save: Opt for affordable (and cleanable) rugs in high-traffic areas and rooms where food will be consumed, and invest in a more expensive wool rug for the sitting room or master bedroom. l On-trend colours: The beauty of rugs is that they don’t need to ‘go’ with your colour scheme; in fact, it’s preferable that they are not matchymatchy with the rest of the room, so you can use a rug to inject a hit of colour and pattern. There has been an upsurge in requests for clashing red, pink and orange, as well as navy, which works well with other colours.

Remember, that a rug that is too big is always better than a rug that is too small! Ideally your

sofa and chairs should be on the rug, or at least partially on the rug! Placing your furniture around it is not the best look. Trust me! Also, the bigger the rug, the bigger the area you’re looking at. In small living rooms it means that just by placing a bigger rug, you make the room look bigger too!

Buy what you love not just what’s fashionable Knowing our own mind is the key to enjoying the home décor we really want. Quality not quantity My days of flat-pack and cheap furniture are very much behind me. I am trying not to remember the hard and uncomfortable futon bed I bought for £100 in 1994 and used for six very long years.

I have upgraded since then. I now have a super king size bed with a rather expensive (and so worth it) memory foam mattress. Its frame is antique and adapted to the size I wanted. Our tastes are different, but for all of us it’s worth spending what we can afford on those things that add to our quality of life, even if that’s just in the pleasure they give us. Get rid of it If you haven’t upgraded the major pieces around your home in the last decade then now is the time to reassess and decide if: You find them useful You adore them If they don’t fit into either category it might be time for a decluttering trip to a charity shop or the local tip. To trend or not to trend I buy ONLY what I love now. Previously when chandeliers were in vogue I had one in my bedroom, and when everyone was painting their walls lilac so did I. Not any longer. I am not immune to trends of course –?I confess to currently

I love vintage and antiques as I like to feel history around me and I like to find out the provenance of items. I now collect art too, for pleasure and as an investment, which is certainly a new concept to me. As I have got older I appreciate the past more. It doesn’t mean that I always buy old – my sofa cushions are vintage-look from a high-street shop, and my garden furniture is a mix of old and new. But I am now using my life experiences to create the exact home life that suits me right now. Older children still at home or even grandchildren might be shaping

how you live, but within that it’s still possible to have the home you really want. My investment-buy tip One of the best investments you can make is a sofa. Think how much time you spend on it. It is rather like a bed in terms of cost per use. Sofa sales have gone up by 6% in the last 12 months and analysts predict this will keep rising. This should mean that the market has plenty on offer for you to choose from. Do not keep your sofa just because you have had it fewer than 20 years. Do you think you have to endure it for a lifetime? You don’t. You are now an adult and if you want something comfier/trendier/ more suitable for your new home or you just fancy a change of sofa then go out and buy one (depending on finances of course). Ensure you buy the best you can afford – one you love as well as suiting your needs.

So here are some smart tips for dealing with all of the inevitable pet hair that ends up covering the house… 1. Dampened rubber gloves Sticky tape is probably your current go-to solution for picking up pet hair off soft furnishings such as sofas and cushions. But while this might be handy for the odd patch of hair, it takes a lot of time, effort and rolls of tape to clean large areas. So, try dampened rubber gloves instead. Once you’ve lightly moistened the gloves, run your hands over any cloth surfaces to attract the hair. You’ll be able to cover large areas such sofas or big pillows quickly, and can simply rinse the hair off the gloves to get rid of it. 2. Anti-static spray For cleaning pet hair off wooden furniture such as tables and chairs, try a soft cloth and anti-static dusting spray, which keeps the hair on the duster rather than letting it reattach itself to the furniture. You can also spray a bit on the carpet to pull the hairs to the surface before you run the vacuum cleaner over it; be sure to move the vacuum in alternate directions to loosen and collect the fine hairs that get stuck deep in the carpet. 3. Window squeegee You might use one of these to keep shower glass or mirrors squeaky-clean, but did you know a window squeegee is a brilliantly easy way to collect hair from sofas and chairs too? Simply drag it over the seat and the back to collect the pet hair into little piles – then pick it up and throw it away..

Breast cancer symptoms you must not ignore Chances are, you know somebody who has been directly affected by breast cancer and, if you do, you’ll know that early detection is key. More than 90% of women diagnosed with breast cancer at the earliest stage survive the disease – so here we’re sharing five warning signs that might not seem ‘obvious’ to you but still need to be given attention. If you do recognise any of these symptoms, make an appointment with your doctor to get things checked out. 1. Nipple retraction While most of us know to look out for any new lumps or bumps, nipple retraction – where the nipple appears to turn inwards – is a key sign many women aren’t aware of.

2. A lump in the armpit It’s worth knowing that swelling in or around your armpit or collarbone can also be a sign of breast cancer, as it’s not just the breasts themselves where lumps are found. This can be a sign the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes

Eczema It’s not common, but Paget’s disease of the breast (different to Paget’s disease of the bone, where bones become weak and deformed) is a rare skin condition that is sometimes a sign of underlying breast cancer. It looks very similar to eczema – a red, scaly rash covering the breast – and is often itchy, too. It always starts in the nipple, and sometimes extends to the areola. in those areas, and sometimes it can even be spotted before you feel a lump in the breast. Lumps in the armpit can be caused by other things too, such as infections or allergies, but it’s worth seeking medical help as soon as you notice a lump to rule out anything untoward. 3. A rash It’s easy to brush away niggling symptoms like rashes, but for some women it’s not always an allergy, or a change in washing powder that’s causing it. A rash across one or both breasts can be a sign of inflammatory breast cancer, so if you’re even the slightest bit concerned, it’s always worth getting it checked out to put your mind at rest.

5. Thickening of the nipple The key to detecting breast cancer early is getting to know your breasts – and what’s normal for them. While every woman is different, checking your breasts regularly means you’ll spot any changes quickly, and feel more confident visiting a doctor when something’s amiss. Remember their appearance and feel can change at different times of your cycle, and again once you’ve gone through the menopause, but if your nipple feels thicker than normal, or the texture has changed in some way, then it’s worth investigating. Any changes in the skin at all in that area from puckering and dimpling to thickening and itching should never be ignored.

Tomato and Roasted Garlic Pie INGREDIENTS • 2½ pounds mixed heirloom tomatoes, cored, sliced ¼-inch thick • 3 tablespoons olive oil • ¾ teaspoon kosher salt, divided, plus more • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more • 6 garlic cloves • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter • 9 ounces whole grain crackers • 2 large eggs • 10 ounces Taleggio cheese, rind removed, coarsely grated (about 1½ cups) • 2½ ounces finely crumbled Parmesan (about ½ cup) • ½ cup mayonnaise • 1 tablespoon chopped thyme, plus ½ teaspoon leaves • 1 small shallot, thinly sliced Special Equipment A 9-inch-diameter springform pan

Transfer pan to a wire rack and let crust cool. Mix Taleggio, Parmesan, mayonnaise, chopped thyme, remaining ½ tsp. salt, remaining ¼ tsp. pepper, and reserved chopped garlic in a medium bowl. Gently dollop half of cheese mixture over bottom of crust, then spread into an even layer with an offset spatula (don’t press too hard or you will break the crust). Layer half of tomato slices over and press down to even out layers. Repeat with remaining cheese mixture and tomatoes. Brush remaining garlic butter over tomatoes. Top with shallot, then scatter thyme leaves over. Bake pie until filling bubbles vigorously and crust is browned, 60-75 minutes. Let cool - one hour before serving. Pie can be made 1 day ahead. Cover loosely and chill (it’s really good cold). SERVES 6

METHOD Place a rack in middle of oven; preheat to 475°. Arrange tomatoes on a rimmed baking sheet, covering entire surface (it’s okay if they overlap). Drizzle with oil; season with salt and pepper. Roast until tomatoes begin to look dry on top, 25–30 minutes. Let cool. Meanwhile, cook garlic and butter in a small saucepan over medium-low heat, swirling often, until butter foams and milk solids turn golden, 5–8 minutes. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a heat proof measuring cup; transfer garlic and toasty bits to a cutting board. Finely chop and set aside.

Taleggio cheese Taleggio is a semisoft, washed-rind, smear-ripened Italian cheese that is named after Val Taleggio. The cheese has a thin crust and a strong aroma, but its flavour is comparatively mild with an unusual fruity tang. Good substitutes for Taleggio are: Brie, Bel Paese, Fontina, Limburger, Robiola.

Reduce oven temperature to 375°. Pulse crackers and ¼ tsp. salt in a food processor until fine crumbs form (you should have about 2 cups). Add eggs and 6 Tbsp. garlic butter and pulse until mixture is the consistency of wet sand. Transfer to springform pan. Using a flat-sided measuring cup, press crumbs firmly onto bottom and 1½” up sides of pan. Bake crust until fragrant and edge is just starting to take on color, 8–10 minutes.

Top 10 most popular holiday snaps It used to be holiday images of hotdog legs that were splashed around Instagram and Facebook but photographs of heart fingers have taken over.

It’s the height of the summer holidays so you can expect a deluge of “look-at-me” holiday pictures showing up across your Facebook and Instagram feeds. And most will not only look familiar but may have inspired you to do the same. There’s even a top ten trend list.

Choose the right clothes for covering up and you can protect yourself from sun-damaged skin as well as beating the heat. Take a look at these tips for hot-weather dressing to find out how. Choose loose, flowing cuts Keeping cool in the heat is all about getting a breeze on your skin. The fresh air means that sweat evaporates quickly, cooling you down and preventing you from feeling sticky.

And there’s no need to worry about the downside of light clothing either – the unforgiving way they show up stains. Cool off with a hat trick Wear a hat in summer to stay cool.

It might seem like a contradiction, but it’s all about insulation: in winter the hat helps to keep in your body heat, while in summer it blocks the hot rays from the sun so they can’t warm you up. Pick a lightweight, breathable style like a classic straw hat to get all of the cooling effect, without trapping your body heat and getting sweaty under the brim.

Invest in good sunglasses Getting the right outfit for sunny days is about protecting yourself from UV rays as well as the heat. So don’t forget your eyes: UV radiation from the sun can contribute to vision problems such as cataracts. Look for shades that block 99 to 100% of UVA and UVB rays. And of course, it doesn’t hurt that great-looking sunglasses will stylishly frame your face, adding the finishing touch to your summer look.

Grow your own summer cocktail ingredients Whatever your poison, green-fingered mixologist Lizzie Palmer tells you what to plant to put a special kick in it. When the sun shines, the young and trendy often think of cocktails in the garden. Go one step better and grow your own ingredients - leaves, flowers or berries.

infused with ingredients she grows there. It’s so popular that sessions are timed to ensure more room around the campfire, marshmallow toaster in one hand, strawberry mint martini in the other. Want to pick something at home to throw in a cocktail after a long, hot day? Lizzie advises: “If you don’t have much space, grow what you can’t buy. Lemon verbena is sensational, as are orange thyme and chocolate mint. We make a chocolate mint julep by adding honey mint syrup to crushed ice and whisky. Orange thyme is delicious with pear or any fruit puree.” Mix a magical mojito Mint, crucial in mojitos and

Pimm’s, grows easily in pots in light shade. Freshen up a Bloody Mary with chopped oregano, parsley, basil and a lovage stem to stir. Grow purple shiso in a bucket and use just a few leaves for a wonderful pink vodka martini. “If you have some sun, lavender and rosemary grow really well in window boxes or pots and they’re great for infusing gin,” says Lizzie. “Just before the lavender flowers open, pick a dozen heads and put them in a bottle of gin for a couple of hours. The liquid goes pink. You can do the same with rosemary, four sprigs is enough.

Strain it, add gin, lemon juice and tonic or soda.” For a hipster highball Nasturtiums are easy to grow in pots. Lizzie packs the leaves and flowers in white rum and leaves it for two to three days. “Then add lime juice and crushed ice. You get the pepperiness of the nasturtium leaves coming through.” The flowers make a great garnish — as do blue starshaped borage flowers, which taste of cucumber. Add them to Pimm’s. If you’ve got a vine, pick the grapes before they’re fully ripe and squeeze the juice out to make verjuice, a tart,

tangy lemon juice equivalent. Or try growing yuzu (pictured right), the Japanese citrus tree that’s said, unlike regular lemons, to be able to survive UK winters in a container outside. But to be truly en courant, cocktailwise, says Lizzie, grow fennel in big containers. When the yellow flowers are in full bloom later in the summer, tap the pollen dust on to a plate. Dip the rim of your glass in lemon juice and then the pollen for the ultimate hipster highball.
