Welcome to the October 2020 edition of the magazine.

Can you believe that it is almost half term - where did that time go? I know that a lot of you who have younger children will be making plans for a very different way to celebrate Halloween this year due to the current situation - please keep safe.

I know so many people are still on furlough or have now lost their jobs. I think that the legacy of these times will remain with us for a very long time to come and worry for the future of our readers and advertisers. Please support the advertisers within the magazine as well as businesses in the local area - I know they depend on your trade and custom. I know from speaking with so many of them that they do appreciate the patronage of local people and other local businesses - they are the lifeblood of the local economy and we must dig deep to help one another during these unprescedented times.

Boris Johnson pledges 95% first-time buyer mortgages: loans part of Government ‘generation buy’ scheme The proposal is reminiscent of previous government-backed low-deposit mortgage schemes after the 2008 crash.

First-time buyers will be able to buy with a five per cent deposit once again under new proposals for government-backed 95 per cent loan-to-value mortgages announced today.

Speaking to the virtual Conservative Party conference, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “We need now to take forward one of the key proposals of our manifesto of 2019: giving young, first-time buyers the chance to take out a long-term, fixed-rate mortgage of up to 95 per cent of the value of the home - vastly reducing the size of the deposit.

“We will help turn Generation Rent

into Generation Buy.” Mr Johnson said there are up to two million people who could afford mortgage repayments but who cannot currently get home loans.

High loan-to-value mortgages were widely available at the start of this year but coronavirus lockdown led to many lenders withdrawing them from the market.

This was a combined result of a backlog of mortgage enquiries from buyers the minute the housing market opened up again and the economic uncertainty arising from the pandemic making banks unwilling to back riskier loans.

Although no details on how the scheme might work have been released, the Telegraph reported that one possibility is for banks to remove the stringent stress tests

introduced after the financial crash.

These are designed to assess whether a buyer will be able to keep up mortgage repayments should interest rates rise from their current historic low of 0.1 per cent.

Instead of the stress tests, the Government could guarantee these higher loans, taking on the risk instead of lenders.

A similar scheme was introduced as part of the Help to Buy programme

in the wake of the 2008 financial crash when banks and building societies withdrew high loanto-value mortgages. Before that, buyers had been able to access 100 per cent loans.

Buying a home with a low deposit can put the buyer at greater risk of negative equity should the property market fall rather than rise.

From The East Riding Archives

All Quiet on the Western Frontier Whenever the First World War is mentioned, almost all of us will immediately think of the trenches and the horrors of the western front. This is the stereotype image that we have of the conflict, and for good reason, but it is easy to forget that during this time, fighting involving British soldiers Bikaner camel at Gharaks (Above). took place in other parts of the world..

In fact, many of the soldiers who officially represented our region in the First World War spent most of that conflict fighting in the deserts of Egypt and Palestine rather than the quagmires of northern France and Belgium.

The East Riding of Yorkshire Yeomanry formed part of the Western Frontier Force, which was sent to Egypt in 1915 to suppress the pro-German ‘Senussi Uprising’.

The Yeomanry later saw action at the First, Second, and Third Battles of Gaza, in which they helped to secure Egypt, India, and the Persian Gulf from the Ottoman Empire. It was not until the final months of the war, in 1918, that part of the Regiment was regrouped into a machine gun corps, and fought in northern France around Cambrai. in memory of these forgotten East Yorkshire soldiers, we once received a photograph album, showing

scenes from the Yeomanry’s time in Egypt, to add to the collections of archives from this Regiment, and it is our privilege to preserve them for posterity.

As the album doesn’t contain pictures from any of the battles, these images give us a feel for what life was like in between the fighting.

Very often, we forget this part of the First World War, and this photograph album serves as a reminder that East Yorkshire soldiers were out there in Egypt, fighting for King and Country.

World of Wine It’s a simple truth that every day of the year will be designated as a special day for some cause or other; in fact there’s more than likely to be 3,650 special days than just 365, the weird and downright wacky amongst them! .

October, for instance, sees National Noodle Day and National Eat Fruit at Work Day, both of which, I’m sure, are extremely worthy causes.

One I almost missed in September was International Grenache Day on the 15th, so set out to pick a couple of examples of this lesserknown, but widely-planted, red grape variety to recommend. Plus a couple of others where Grenache is used as part of a blend.

Grenache has proven to be a diverse workhorse of a varietal, adding depth, body and fruit to blends as well as offering juicy fruits and chunky texture on its own. It can be found in simple table wines as well as cult status superstars. It is known by many names, including Garnacha, Cannonau, Alicante and Garnatxa, all depending on where in the world you are.

Grenache is a red wine grape known mostly for its supporting role in French Chateauneuf du Pape wines. But under the right circumstances, it can shine on its own. The hardy, sun-loving, grape is generally spicy, with accents on soft red and black berry flavours and, thanks to mild tannins, has a softer “mouth feel” on the palate.

In France, the variety’s stronghold is firmly in the south. The southern end of the Rhône Valley is where the Mediterranean heat and character of the garrigue - the herb-covered scrubland - really starts to make itself felt. Syrah, the grape of the northern Rhône, takes a back seat to Grenache, which is usually found blended with Mourvèdre and Cinsault.

In the southern Rhône Grenache dominates in Côtes-du-Rhône, Côtes-du-Rhône Villages and the crus, with Châteauneuf-du-Pape one of the best known of those at the top of the quality scale. These dark, earthy wines are full-bodied and often densely-structured.

Whilst wines labelled Côtes-duRhône are the “generic” wines of the appellation structure, this by no means signifies they are lacking in quality. Frequently, some extraordinary wines are produced and sold as Côtes-duRhône. With aromas of ripe red and black fruit, sweet, rounded tannins and surprising concentration and intensity, they offer excellent value for money.

There are nearly 20 villages producing wines that are a considered a step up from Côtesdu-Rhône. The appellation Côtesdu-Rhône Villages is therefore the focal point of some wonderful Grenache-based blends. The best are permitted to display the name of a village and are an excellent source of reliable reds that show a little more structure, finesse and depth of flavour.

The seven crus, where production is focused on red wines, are Lirac, Vinsobres, Rasteau, Gigondas and Vacqueyras. Lirac is home to soft reds that are like an early-maturing Côtes-du-Rhône Villages in style.

Vinsobres’ focus is on reds from Syrah, blended with Grenache. Its sub-Alpine climate gives a lighter, fresher style of wine.

Rasteau produces deeply coloured, full-bodied reds, tannic when young and needing a little time in bottle. Head to Gigondas to encounter big heavyweight reds, the essence of the south and finally, to Vacqueyras, producer of less weighty, fruitier, cherry-like wines with a touch of elegance.

Arguably the finest wines of the southern Rhône are made in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Generally Grenache-based, with Syrah and Mourvèdre added (though winemakers are permitted to blend in wines from up to 13 different varieties), these wines are fullbodied, rich and dark. While often made to drink at an earlier stage than those of the northern Rhône, few wines combine immense strength with perfect elegance quite so convincingly.

In Spain, along with Tempranillo, Mazuelo and Graciano, Grenache (known here as Garnacha) is a major player in Rioja blends. The heat of this famous region suits its sweet, fruit-forward style and the variety adds body, weight and structure to the slightly more austere Tempranillo to create the classic character of Rioja.

The natural flavours of Garnacha also work well with those induced by barrel age, a key feature of Rioja winemaking. New American oak is frequently the wood of choice, imparting a soft, vanilla flavour with gentle spice notes that integrate well into the fruit

and concentration of the Garnacha blend. The degree to which these oak flavours are present in the wine depends on its time in contact with oak; in ascending order the wines move from crianza to reserva and gran reserva, increasing with oak integration and flavour.

Neighbouring Rioja to the northeast is the slightly lesser-known region of Navarra. Again Garnacha is the dominant variety in the blend, supported by Tempranillo. Navarra’s more northerly latitude and cooler sites give a slightly lighter style of wine than those produced in Rioja, and for the most part made for drinking earlier. The wines retain their vibrant, fleshy fruit flavours, with a sappy character, and with light pepper and spice notes.

Navarra and Rioja also produce rosé wines from Garnacha. These dry wines can be full-bodied, packed with fresh red fruits with surprising alcoholic strength. Raspberry and red cherry flavours dominate these darkly coloured, concentrated wines.

But many would say that Spain produces some of the finest wines made from the Garnacha grape in Priorat in Catalonia. Here Garnacha is the dominant grape in the blend often supported by Cariñena (Carignan), Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah. The wines are sophisticate, highly sought-after, intense and brooding. The secret is the old gnarled vines planted in poor schist soils, which a new breed of winemaker is expert in taming.

Away from France and Spain, you’ll find Grenache playing an important role in wines from California, Australia and South Africa. My message, don’t be put off by the name, try a bottle soon and you’ll very likely be surprised.

Sunday Lunch at The Woolpack is very popular with a traditional Sunday roast being served and it is advisable to reserve a table. There is a choice of Topside of Beef, Turkey Breast and Leg of Lamb, or alternatively a wedge of pie, all served with Yorkshire pudding and accompanied with a selection of freshly prepared

vegetables, roast potatoes, roast parsnips and mash, with lashings of gravy, but remember to save room for a homemade dessert - Treacle Sponge, Rice Pudding , Crème Brûlée or Tiramisu are all on our menu.

The Woolpack is dog friendly, but we are very aware that not everyone is comfortable eating out where there are dogs, so, we have reverted back to the carpeted area being ‘dog free’, and the ‘Snug’ is once again the designated area for four legged friends. We are trying to balance drinkers, diners and dogs in a small pub during a pandemic.

We are also being asked a lot if we intend to stay, but given our ages that’s not likely to be a 30 year lease! Ideally, we see an opportunity for an ambitious chef/cook with an outgoing partner (preferably experienced in the pub industry) to come on board and join us in re-building this great pub. Yoghurt-marinated leg of lamb with spicy fennel

I love to serve sliced lamb at room temperature or even cold, but for the braise, you’ll want to gently rewarm in an oven before shredding to loosen up the fat.

SERVES 6-10 Ingredients 2–2.5kg bone-in leg of lamb flaky sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 40g fennel or cumin seeds, finely crushed, plus extra for serving 500g full-fat Greek-style yoghurt, plus extra for serving 6 garlic cloves, finely grated 3 tablespoons coarsely chopped oregano leaves, plus extra for serving 1 tablespoon chilli flakes, plus extra for serving 60ml olive oil, plus extra for drizzling 60ml lemon juice, plus an extra 2 tablespoons 2 large fennel bulbs, thinly sliced *2 large handfuls parsley, coriander and/or mint, tender leaves and stems *ground sumac (optional) Method 1. Using a sharp paring knife, score the lamb about 1cm (½ inch) deep every few inches or so – this is a really large cut of meat and

we aren’t trying to keep it intact or anything, but we still want to cook it on the bone. Making these incisions will help season the meat deeply and cook more evenly. It seems like a fancy technique, but I promise, you can’t mess it up.

2. Season the lamb with salt and pepper; you’ll need at least 1 teaspoon flaky sea salt per 450g here. Sprinkle with the fennel seeds, making sure to get everything into those incisions.

3. Whisk the yoghurt, garlic, oregano, chilli flakes, olive oil and the 60ml lemon juice in a medium bowl. Season with salt and pepper.

As if you were applying a mud mask, smear the yoghurt all over the lamb, making sure to get into any and all nooks and crannies. Let the meat sit, lightly covered with plastic wrap, at room temperature, for at least 1 hour or up to 2 hours, or wrap tightly in plastic and keep in the refrigerator overnight.

4. Preheat the oven to 150°C.

5. Scatter half the fennel slices around the bottom of a large roasting tin and season with salt and pepper. Without wiping off any excess marinade, place the lamb on top, fat side up. (If braising the lamb, add 500ml cups water to the roasting tin and cover with foil.)

6. Roast, without touching or moving or peeking, until the lamb registers 45°C when a thermometer is inserted about 5cm deep into the thickest part of the leg (taking care not to touch the bone), 60–90 minutes. (If braising, continue cooking until the lamb is extremely tender and nearly falling apart, 3–3½ hours. Remove the foil.)

7. Increase the oven temperature to 230°C and continue to cook until the lamb has reached 50°C and is deeply golden brown all over, with little bits of charred marinade, 20–25 minutes more. (If braising, this step is just to brown and crisp up the outside of the lamb.)

8. Remove from the oven and let the lamb rest for a few minutes.

9. Once the lamb is cooked to your liking, carve the larger lobes off the bone and thinly slice. Or, for more dramatic presentation, thinly slice the lamb directly off the bone, in the style of a large country ham or prosciutto – this is my favourite way. (If you’ve braised the lamb, simply shred into large pieces.)

10. Combine the remaining sliced fennel and 2 tablespoons lemon juice; season with salt, pepper and extra chilli flakes. Add the herbs and toss to coat.

11. Place the lamb on a large platter and scatter with the fennel mixture. Sprinkle with extra fennel seeds, and sumac if using. Drizzle with olive oil and flaky salt and serve with extra yoghurt.

DO AHEAD Lamb can be marinated 24 hours ahead, covered loosely and refrigerated. Lamb can also be roasted or braised a few hours ahead, loosely covered with foil, and left at room temperature.

Five lovely things to do with apples . . .

October is abundant with British apples, so here are five of my favourite quick apple recipes for you to make and enjoy.

Simple apple and cinnamon bars

A simple and super quick, all-inone-bowl bake. Put 350g of plain flour, 1 tsp salt, and 150g butter into a large bowl, stir together the flour and salt, rub in the butter until it looks like breadcrumbs and then add 150g light soft brown sugar and mix in with a knife until well combined. Spread onto the base of a brownie or flapjack style baking tin, lined with non-stick baking paper. Peel and core two large cooking apples or 4 eating apples (or a mixture of both), thinly slice, and spread over the base and press down gently. Sprinkle with 2 tbsp of soft brown sugar mixed with 2 tsp of cinnamon and then chop 50g butter into little pieces and dollop them on top. Bake at 190 degrees for about 35 minutes. Leave to cool

and firm up a little in the tin (this will take about 30 minutes) then cut into slices

Squash and apple slaw

Peel and coarsely grate half a butternut squash, keeping the seeds. Coarsely grate two large carrots and add to the squash.

Wash the sticky sludge off the squash seeds and put them on a flat baking tray, drizzle with oil, and sprinkle with a pinch of chilli and mixed spice - bake at 180 degrees for about 10 mins (keep a close eye to check they don’t burn!).

Apple pancakes

Its super easy to add coarsely grated apple straight to your pancake mix and this adds a great apple taste, as well as hidden secret fruit for fussier eaters. For an even more delicious autumnal breakfast, core and finely chop four eating apples into tiny chunks, pop a tablespoon of butter and a teaspoon of honey into a frying pan and gently cook the apples, add a pinch of cinnamon. Make a thick American pancake mix, spoon into the pan and cook until bubbling on top, spoon on the cinnamon apple mix and press in, then flip to cook the other side. We also love to add a handful of sultanas to the apple and add to scotch pancake mix.

Apple and vanilla jam

Grate two eating apples and mix with the juice of half a lemon. Put 2 tbsps of rapeseed oil, 1 tbsp of cider vinegar and 2 tbsp of honey into a jar, season well and shake to combine (if you have an ice cube, add one to the dressing and shake again as this makes it thick and glossy). Mix everything together with your hands, sprinkle with fresh herbs and enjoy on its own, in wraps, with meat, or as a crunchy sandwich or burger filling.

I can never really understand why we aren’t all more excited about apple jam. Gorgeous on toast, heavenly on scones, and completely moreish to replace raspberry jam in a Victoria sponge.

Peel and core 2.5kg of cooking apples (or pears, or a mixture of both).

Put the chopped apples into a large, thick bottomed pan, add the juice of 2 lemons and simmer gently, stir often and add a little water if it starts to stick. Then add into sterilised jars and seal immediately.

Residents to access faster broadband due to funding boost Homes and businesses in rural parts of the East Riding will be able to access faster and more reliable internet speeds thanks to extra funding from East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

As part of the Government’s £22million Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme, the council has committed an additional £500,000 to help its residents and businesses in hard-to-reach places to get even better connected as part of a group scheme.

The voucher scheme, which has been helping to provide gigabitcapable connections for businesses and homes in the most remote parts of the country, will now allow those homes and businesses in the East Riding who have speeds of less than 30mbps to get faster connections.

Eligible residential properties in rural areas will be able to apply for vouchers of up to £3,000 while small and medium sized businesses can apply for a maximum of £7,000.

The top-up funding forms part of the Broadband East Riding programme, which to date has enabled over 50,000 properties in the East Riding access superfast broadband.

Councillor Anne Handley, portfolio holder for enterprise and digital at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “This top-up funding will be giving some of the most rural homes and businesses in the East Riding with low speeds the opportunity to access better broadband.

Feeling refreshed… MARION September we saw travel happening at

My husband was not really up for a break but early September having Emma back in the office daily I needed to visit Pembrokeshire. Our hotel we planned to use for next years tour has sadly closed and I was in need to find a replacement. Any one wanting to visit this area I now know so many hotels inside and out I will be happy to book you a break!

Although we had busy days we arrived home feeling rejuvenated.

Our guests that visited Jersey in September all returned safely having had a super holiday and enjoyed been well looked after.

This week we have had our first small tour of 18 visit the Borders of Scotland. The weather has been kind along with everyone we have met. We enjoyed stunning scenery along with interesting places. We were well placed staying just outside of Peebles for a selection of excursions all just involving a short journey.

With a well planned itinerary and organised afternoon teas our distancing was well catered for.

Newbattle Abbey greeted us with open arms and so appreciated our visit as their income has been greatly affected this year. We were split into two groups to cover the house & gardens.

Joyce was so informative on the Abbey’s history.

The grounds including the Italian Garden are wonderful and all looked after by Jason single handed.

At Abbotsford we had a wonderful visit to the home of Sir Walter Scott. We were their first visitors this year by coach, they were so pleased to see us.

Each day I sanitised the coach and before boarding I took everyone’s temperatures.

Added precautions taken to keep us all safe.

Hotels are coping well with new protocol. Buffets at breakfast are not allowed and everything is served to you. This has worked well in Scotland & Wales.

Sanitising stations are everywhere along with distance markers on the floor.

Both places requested masks be warn by everyone except for when eating or drinking at a table. Bedrooms in Wales where automatically serviced whilst in Scotland we had to request service or just ask for anything we needed.

Let us hope that we can continue to travel a change is definitely as good as a rest and I would recommend a break as a great tonic.

I think everyone just needs something nice to look forward to.

The New SEAT Mii

Silence is golden in the new SEAT Mii - now relaunched as an electric-only vehicle. Does it make sense?

Roy Woodcock put one to the test . . .

Here’s a car that really is a sign of the times; the SEAT Mii. Yes, I know, it’s been around for a few years alongside it’s alternativelybadged siblings - the Volkswagen Up and Skoda Citigo - but it has now morphed into a purely electric vehicle.

That shows just how far we’ve come; what were once seen as little more than the latest gimmick is now mounting a serious challenge at becoming mainstream. Zero emissions cars could just be the thing right now and the SEAT Mii has a lot going for it.

all-electric vehicles on the market, although you won’t be surprised to learn that the term “affordable” is relative - the Mii will cost you £19,800 even with the Government’s £3,000 plug-in car grant.

That’s an awful lot of money for an urban runabout, which is what this car is. A good one, I have to say, but there’s no getting away from the fact that it’s expensive.

To be clear, 2020 saw SEAT take the brave step of relaunching this car as an electric-only vehicle; you can no longer buy one with an engine under the bonnet.

Those prepared to take in the broader picture may well see a convincing case for a car such as this. The range is good - SEAT claim around 161 miles when fully charged, but it will vary depending on how hard it’s driven - the build quality is excellent, it’s remarkably spacious and remarkably nippy.

It’s the first fully-electric car from the Spanish manufacturer but there will be more to come. It’s also one of the most affordable

First things first: Using a 40kw fast charger, and there are more and more of those about, a full battery will take little more than an hour

to achieve. More realistically, you will plug in at home, either with a wall box fitted or using a cable from a domestic three-point plug, and charge-up overnight.

It means it will always be ready to go with no visits required to the petrol station and the satisfaction of saving plenty of cash on fuel as well as being kind to the planet.

The charging part, I have to stress, is remarkably easy; in my case I was plugging into a wall socket in my hallway, with the cable through the letterbox, but if this was my car permanently I would very quickly move to having a wall box installed.

With an 82bhp electric motor, acceleration is nippy – 0-31mph in 3.9 seconds is a much more important benchmark than 0-62mph in 12.3 – while the car’s near-silent electric motor further enhances the “little luxury” experience.

Forgetting all the technicalities around electric propulsion, it’s very easy to treat the Mii as a “normal” car, although it does take a while to get used to just how quiet it is.

It’s a great car for small spaces, so it’s good around town. But it does longer, motorway-type journeys, too, and four adults will be able to

fit in and not feel cramped. It’s got four doors and a decent sized boot, with an additional storage area compared to the old petrol version of the car that’s handy for storing away the charging cable.

The Mii is the first model to include SEAT CONNECT, giving remote access and management of the vehicle. Customers can review driving data, parking position, vehicle status including doors and lights, and have the ability to control air-conditioning remotely, all from their electric smartphone app.

It comes without any trim options and standard equipment is impressive and another factor to take into consideration when debating the price. It includes metallic paint (usually an extra these days), sports seats, dark tinted windows, Lane Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, rear parking sensors and fast charging capabilities.

There’s air-con, cruise control, rainsending wipers, heated front seats, heated and electrically-controlled door mirrors and heated front and rear windows , LED running lights, sat-nav and smartphone cradle.

I was really impressed with this car and think it makes perfect sense

The automatic gear changes come into play without you ever really noticing things - I guess the only thing to remember is to go easy with that right foot.

Push on too quickly and you will notice the range calculator dipping a tad too quickly. Conversely, lift off and you’ll notice that you can quickly “recover” some range.

There’s also the facility to pull the gear selector back a notch to make maximum use of brake regeneration to “capture” a few extra miles. It also saves you having to brake too often!

Six Safe, Simple Folk Remedies...

Rub garlic on your feet.

The idea is that the active compounds in garlic penetrate the skin and are absorbed into the bloodstream.

(Test it: if you rub garlic on your feet, you’ll taste it in your mouth in about 15 minutes.)

Here’s how to do it: thinly slice several garlic cloves, layer on the bottom of the feet, wrap feet in plastic wrap, and cover with socks.

You can also just eat garlic - finely mince 1–2 garlic cloves, drop in a small cup of water and chug it - or take garlic in capsule form. Studies show that a daily garlic supplement significantly reduces incidence and severity of colds and flu.

Gargle with apple cider vinegar.

Raw, unpasteurised apple cider vinegar (ACV) contains probiotics and creates an acidic coating in the throat that deters viruses and bacteria. Mix a tablespoon in warm water and gargle; repeat several times a day. Or mix equal parts ACV and raw honey in a small jar, and take 1 tablespoon every hour (store in the refrigerater between doses).

You can also gargle with salt water: the briny solution soothes a sore throat, promotes healing of irritated mucous membranes, and creates an environment that’s inhospitable to pathogens. Mix ½ teaspoon sea salt in a cup of warm water, gargle, and spit it out. Don’t overdo it; too much salt will irritate the throat.

Clean your ears with hydrogen peroxide.

Some people hypothesize the cold virus enters the body through the ear canal, and cleaning the ears with hydrogen peroxide can halt replication of the virus.

Pour 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution in a dropper bottle, tilt your head to one side, and place several drops of hydrogen peroxide into the ear. Hold your head in place for about two minutes; you’ll feel a

fizzing or bubbling sensation. Tilt your head to the other side and repeat. You can do this every couple of hours, or until there’s no more bubbling or fizzing when you add the drops. If nothing else, your ears will be clean. (If you’ve had a punctured eardrum, or any ear surgeries, DO NOT try this option.)

Wear wet socks.

This is a simple form of hydrotherapy, which is thought to clear blocked nasal passages and increase immune system activity by shocking the body into quickly increasing circulation. Before bed, soak your feet in a tub of hot water.

At the same time, soak a pair of thin cotton socks in a bowl of ice water. Wring them out well, put them on your feet, cover with a heavy pair of wool socks, and crawl into bed. Your feet will start warming up quickly, and congestion should be relieved within about 30 minutes.

Drink ginger tea.

To decrease inflammation, thin mucus secretions, and clear nasal passages. Cayenne pepper, garlic, and other spicy and pungent foods also help. For a decongestant tea, combine ¼ cup sliced ginger root with 3 cups water, and add a clove of garlic and as much cayenne pepper as you can bear. Simmer, covered, for 20 minutes, then strain and sweeten with raw honey.

You can also add onions, green tea bags, or apple slices - all are rich in quercetin, an antioxidant that reduces inflammation, supports immune response, and acts as a natural antihistamine.

Eat chicken soup.

The hot vapours from soup increase the temperature of the airways and promote secretions.

Warm broth also calms and soothes inflamed membranes in the throat. Drinking any kind of soup also helps with hydration the more liquid content, the better.

Top tips for working from home

As many of us are still working from home, DaltonSpire Director Jane Gough has put together her essential survival guide to working from home...

Get up, do your workout, have a shower, get dressed, have that coffee and get ready for work.

Whatever your morning routine was when going to the office, keep it up. Ok, so maybe you can sacrifice high heels for a comfy pair of slippers, or the suit for jogging bottoms and a t-shirt. The important thing is to maintain a routine.

Establish a place to work

Working is always better when you establish a space in which to work; some jobs require a lot of space, you may need to lay out drawings or paperwork, other jobs only require space for a phone or laptop. If you are with family, draw up boundaries around your working environment to ensure you are not interrupted during a telephone call or when you need to concentrate. There have been a few high-profile blunders recently involving interrupted meetings!

Always consider the nature of the documentation or data you are working with; is it personal information governed by GDPR? If so then you may need to use a separate private room to maintain compliance. Whichever situation applies to you, ensure you have a comfortable working environment and that those around you respect it.

As when in the office and especially when working with computers, it is important to take regular breaks, whether that is to make a cuppa or check in with your family. You may like to take a longer break at lunch and stretch your legs. The outdoors is great for keeping you fit and healthy and great for mental wellbeing. Again, try and maintain the routine you would normally have in your work life. What is very important is that you decide on a time to “switch off” and return to family life or, if you are on your own, doing things that are not work centric like exercise, keeping in touch with friends and family.

From personal experience I know how easy it is to keep working even when you shouldn’t be.

Don’t try and multitask

It may be tempting to start painting that wall or rehanging that door in between work tasks but this will distract you from your job and invariable take longer than anticipated. This will lead to frustration when you complete neither task by the end of the day. When you should be working; focus on work. Leave the chores and DIY for the evenings and weekends when you would normally do it.

Do some training

If you find you do not have enough time to completely fill a workday then look at taking on some training. There is a wealth of resources online where you can learn new skills or improve existing skills. Have a conversation with your employer as it may count towards your personal development plan or personal work goals. Completing training will be rewarding and give you an additional sense of achievement.

If you have kids, prepare for interruptions It is inevitable; and the age of your children will determine how best to handle this one. Can someone look after them for you? Are they old enough to understand your explanation that you need to work and be left alone to do so? Can you manage your time differently; spending more time with them during the day and maybe catch up on work later when they are in bed? There is no single answer to this, but communication is key to ensure interruptions are kept to a minimum.

I have found some interruptions are positive during these strange times, the happy background noises of my six-month old has somewhat lightened the mood of frustration while customers and I

are fighting with remote desktops and troublesome VPN’S.

Switch off from social media (and other distractions)

It is important to remain focussed otherwise your productivity will suffer. Don’t be tempted to spend time cruising on social media, unless it IS your job, or hunting for bargains online. Any distraction will detract from your ability to concentrate and work and nothing is worse than realising the day has passed and you have achieved nothing.

The key thing is to maintain a routine as close to your normal working life as possible, this ensures you remain productive and will make it easier to return to a normal working lifestyle when all this is over.

An unexpected but pleasing start.

After the shambles at the end of last season we did not expect to start the following campaign with four wins out of four without conceding a goal. Everyone was pessimistic about the coming year even if the revolving door of transfer dealings did offer some encouragement that things were actually being done behind the scenes.

As it stands ten new players have joined during the current transfer window and maybe others may come in before this closes in a fortnight. Due to the pandemic and the delay in allowing limited numbers of fans come to matches it is now a buyers market. If City still want the Rochdale midfielder or Exeter winger they are more likely to accept lower offers if that is pretty much the only money coming in between now and January. Saying that we only really need a centre forward if anything, though Eaves did score over twenty goals for Gillingham during his last stay in Division 1 and Wilks has impressed as a central striker during the defeat of Leeds in the Caraboa Cup. An interesting theory came up recently that one of the many reasons for relegation was that a core group of last year’s team pretty much gave up in the new year after the departure of Bowen & Grosiki and the club had not offered sufficient deals to re sign for the club. They would just run down their contracts like many before them and when the effort was required little came in. Who knows if this is true but it is noticeable that once the out of contract players have moved on the new players and some of the

George Honeyman remaining players have made much more of an effort and they look like a unified team. There doesn’t appear to be any prima-donnas at the moment just players trying to make a career for themselves or just in the mould of Ashbee and Andy Dawson and work hard.

The downside of all these signings is that once again the many youngsters are not getting games.

You imagined the central defence comprising Greaves, McCloughlin or Festus Arthur if Burke and De Wiijs moved on and others like Sheaf, Berry and Jones are pushed to the margins. The club are looking into loan deals for some of them but going by the club’s record of re-signing players they’ll be on the final years of their contracts before getting the opportunity to

play and take offers elsewhere like so many youngsters over recent years. I still can’t get my head around the Premier League interest in Max Clark at the moment but he’s just one example of youngsters taking first team opportunities elsewhere or bigger contact offers.

No one has really got their head around our success. Is this due to the opposition being poor and we have players who can hurt players of this standard or have City really improved? So far City have played promoted sides but we will see how they cope in games with Peterborough and Fleetwood who are teams of playoff quality. At the moment teams do not know much about City but what will the return fixtures be like? Will teams pack the midfield, come for a draw and do little more than hoof it to their centre forward to chase? We are playing better but it’s still the same tactics of a lone frontman and two widemen. Is there a Plan B if teams over run the midfield and block off the wingers?. The one thing to say on this is that these are lower division teams and their players may lack the quality to do what Championship sides achieved from January onwards. It is noticeable that players at this level require more opportunities to score than at Championship level so if the defence and holding midfielders concentrate there is less chance of conceding than last year when quality players had ample opportunities to take aim.

As much as the current form is encouraging there are bigger issues in the game. Will we actually conclude this season? Last year this division concluded in March but for the playoffs and with so many rumours of EFL clubs

Hakeeb Adelakun facing financial problems will all sides remain by May or will the difficulties caused by the pandemic, not least the costs of testing, lead to the season being suspended early once again?

One thing which does need mentioning is that the sale of Jarrod Bowen is keeping the club going. Installments from his January transfer and others from Harry Maguire are paying the wage ill and financing the new signings.

There is a wage cap of £2.5 million, or thereabouts linked to existing contacts apparently, but the wage limit and transfer instalments are keeping City going. I’m not sure how others in this division are paying the bills without any gate income and it’s also a massive worry at the Championship level when clubs have to finance £20 million wage bills with no gate revenue. City are in a far better position to get through this season than most EFL clubs but as ever there is a down side. The Allams recently stated they would sell the club for around £20 million provided they could still keep these instalments. It’s not worth mulling over this as no one will want to purchase a football club in these uncertain times especially if you have finance everything without any other revenue sources for the next six months.

A rested lawn will end winter in good shape

Sally-Anne Fairburn, keen amateur gardener, cookery teacher and flower arranger, talks about lawns this month...

While autumn is one of the key seasons for feeding and treating our lawns, winter is the time when we let it rest.

Minimal growth, saturated soil and freezing conditions make grass vulnerable to damage and unable to repair itself.

Walking over it or using the lawn as a venue to play football or exercise your pets when the ground is wet or frozen will quickly ensure it is churned up into a muddy mess.

Once grass blades become damaged, they won’t regenerate until next spring, and the space they leave will be colonised by weeds and moss. Never try to feed your grass now in the hope things will improve, as any new growth

encouraged by fertiliser will be too weak and tender to withstand winter.

The presence of unused chemicals on the soil and grass can also do more damage than good in winter.

However, on days when the ground is dry and not frozen, there are things you can do to help your lawn. As grass will grow when the temperature is above 5°C, you can continue to mow as necessary with the blades on a high setting. If the blades are too low, they will gouge up the soil and damage the turf.

You can also safeguard against potential damage by laying a path of stepping stones across areas of grass that get the most footfall, such as leading to the washing line, shed or greenhouse, for instance.

Treading carefully, remove perennial weeds with a puller and edge around borders to keep the garden looking tidy.

Watch out for seasonal pests such as moles, that return to action in January and February, as well

This is a relatively quick and easy task to complete (see panel, right), but do make sure the laid stones lie flush with the surface of the soil to avoid wrecking mower blades or becoming a trip hazard once they have bedded in.

Leaves, leaf mould and keeping your lawn healthy

Simply rake up the leaves and either store them in an opentopped wire bin or, if space is in short supply, pile them into black bin liners.

One of the best ways of keeping your lawn healthy in winter is to keep it clear of fallen leaves.

Stab a few holes in each bag and wet the leaves, then tie the top and store them somewhere out of the way for a couple of years.

If left on the grass, leaves take time to rot and will block light from the grass and keep it damp, which leads to a prevalence of pests and the potential for fungal problems and bare or mossy patches.

Raking the leaves may seem a thankless task but on the plus side it lets you make lots of lovely leaf mould, which is one of the best soil conditioners available – and is so easy to make.

The result is gorgeous, crumbly brown richness that can be used as a soil mulch and conditioner, or sieved and used as potting compost.

Alternatively, add the leaves to your compost heap for added richness.

Leaves on soil can be left to rot and feed the soil. They are also broken down and dragged under by worms.

What happens when your child self-isolates

I thought it might be useful to talk about this because lots of people have said to me that they are a bit unsure about the rules - and I know it’s happened to schools in our region already and if it hasn’t, I think it’s fairly inevitable that all schools/parents/children will have to deal with this at some point. So, what does it mean for the whole family when a child needs to self-isolate? Obviously, if your child is the one who has tested positive then he or she has to stay at home for 14 days along with the rest of the family. You must then tell your childcare provider or school so that they can alert the parents of other children in their bubble and those they have been in close contact with. If your child’s bubble is sent home, he or she needs to self-isolate at home for 14 days, so they can’t leave the house, except to go into the garden, and can’t meet up with anyone from another household. BUT no-one else in the house needs to self-isolate unless your child gets symptoms themselves. That’s the key thing. So, siblings can still go to school and you can still go to work (if you have an older child that can look after themselves at home) - and you just need to follow the usual Rule of Six, maintain hygiene, wear masks when required and remember to socially distance.

If you have younger children, you will effectively have to isolate with them so you can stay with them. By the way, on the subject of masks, you still need to distance yourself when you wear a mask. It doesn’t give you carte blanche to stand right behind someone or reach in front of someone to get something off a supermarket shelf! This is something that particularly annoys me!!!! Rant over! Hope that helps. .

Is it too early to get ready for Christmas?

Yes, it’s that time of year when all the shops are displaying their Christmas offerings.

Last year, for once, I was pretty organised and started in October, getting a few bits every week so it wasn’t a mad dash in December. It was so much better, I think I’ll do the same this year. Of course, with coronavirus and people worrying about shortages in the shops and supermarkets restricting how many items you can buy again, let’s make sure we leave enough for everyone - so don’t go mad, everyone’s in the same boat. And spare a thought for all the people who are struggling even more this year because of what’s going on - and let’s see how we help.

Winter warmer

There’s nothing like a hot bowl of soup on a cold, rainy, windy day with some fresh crusty bread. Yum! I’m making myself hungry just thinking about it? That or a nice cottage pie with extra mashed potatoes - because let’s face it, the mash on the top is never enough!

As we have a vegetarian in the house I tend to make our cottage pies with Quorn mince - and it tastes great, though I say so myself. As for soup, I guess winter vegetables at this time of year - potato, swede, parsnip and carrot - or a nice leek and potato soup. Or just throw in whatever you’ve got in the fridge! Works just as well! And if you need an instant fix, grab a tin of tomato soup. Can you tell I love soup?!!! So, what’s your comfort dish? Macaroni cheese? Beans on toast?

And finally........stay safe, stay positive and remember to socially distance, wash your hands and keep a face mask in your handbag or glove compartment!
