BeverleyMag December 2016 Dear Readers Welcome to the December edition of the magazine. I can’t get over how quickly another year has flown by. I hope it has been a good year for all you readers and advertisers. I know that as we face the coming year with all the uncertainties surrounding the Brexit result and the troubles around the world that we should all be thanking our lucky stars that we live here in East Yorkshire. We may moan about our lives, but when you see the footage on the news coming out of Syria it makes you realise just how blessed we are and how much we take for granted. I would like to thank all our advertisers & readers for their continued support of the magazine this year. I hope you all have happy and peaceful Christmas and prosperous New Year. Early Years Funding
I am supporting the Save East Riding Childcare campaign to get a better deal for parents in Beverley and Holderness. It’s really important that parents in the East Riding can enjoy the full benefit of the Government’s policy of offering 30 hours per week of free childcare to working parents from September 2017. That policy – which aims to ensure work pays and help mums back to work, has been widely welcomed but I want to see it deliver for parents in the East Riding. Currently, the headline rate childcare providers will receive under the Government’s Early Years National Funding Formula is £4.71 per hour. However, this is the average for English local authorities, and the East Riding will receive the 11th lowest rate under the formula: £4.03 per hour. Once deductions are made this will amount to just £3.55 per hour – and local childcare providers have warned me that this may not be enough to make it viable for them to participate in the new scheme.

I want to see the introduction of a “floor” rate below which no local authority area can fall, and which would
help ensure that East Riding childcare providers will offer the extra places needed. This would offer greater certainty to nurseries in the East Riding that the sums will add up for them. I have written to Caroline Dinenage, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Women, Equalities and Early Years at the Department for Education, to raise this and I will be updating my constituents on the progress of this campaign. I want to ensure that good quality Early Years education remains affordable for all providers. Down Sizing!
still regarded as all important by some. Whilst to others the benefits of having cash and knowing that you have the freedom to move when you want plus money to spend on other pleasures i.e. holidays, plus knowing that you don’t need to worry about maintenance and repair to thereby reducing the stress.
Recently someone asked me ‘We are thinking of down sizing, I know you do sales and lettings, can you help me?’ It is vital that the reason or more usually the reasons for the down sizing are identified. I have heard the following reasons why people wish to down size and generally no reasons are the same. ‘I want to live in a property which is cheaper to run and does not mean I have to spend all my time cleaning it’. ‘Now the children have left home, I don’t need the space and I would rather have a garden’. ‘The home we are in needs quite a lot of effort to modernise and I would rather rent’. ‘We want to rent until we find the right property’. ‘We want to be able to move when we feel like it and not be tied to a property.’ ‘ I don’t want to have to worry about maintenance and upkeep that is why I want to rent’.

The use of the internet to conduct your own research is a good start but there are often subtle points which the internet might not show. A discussion with a local estate agent and letting agent can be of benefit as they can share information and help you clarify the process by understanding the current housing market.
Selling up and moving to a smaller property is a route which most people identify as possible a solution. However, some identify that selling and moving to a rented property might be a better option.
The individual who recently raised the point is still considering their options, however by starting the discussion means that once a decision is made we can assist with the future process, providing tailored service and support to make their decision a reality.

Hull & East Riding Mumbler News - Festive Family Fun in Our Local Area Christmas is well and truly on its way. I’ve recently added a section to the Hull & East Riding Mumbler website to list festive family things to do and I am really impressed with how much is going on locally! If you want a trip to see Santa there is a wide choice of grottos – I took my children to check one out ‘Claus cabin’ at Princes Quay, its beautiful and the Santa very realistic (picture of me and my eldest about to go in)! There’s also a grotto and winter wonderland at Flemingate shopping centre in Beverley, a free grotto at North Point shopping centre on Bransholme and a grotto and a festive farm at Hornsea Freeport shopping outlet.

There are plenty of family events to get you in the festive spirit too. The big event in Beverley is the Beverley Festival of Christmas, with hundreds of festive stalls and entertainment, this year it’s on the 11th December. The Deep have their Santa Special which includes a visit to Santa, a festive trail and a trip on the Land Train. The Freedom Centre in Hull have their Christmas Party and lights switch on the 2nd December. Burton Constable at Christmas is a chance to see the house decorated for Christmas plus festive crafts for children. Another popular annual event is the Anlaby Live Nativity on the 10th December followed that day at Anlaby Park Library with Carols on the Green and Santa. You can find all the details and latest events and activities on the Mumbler website. Christmas shows and places to see Santa’s are on the Christmas page and all one-off family events are on the Events Calendar.
Most garden centres also have fabulous grottos and winter wonderlands to explore. Southwold in Cottingham and Brigg are excellent and also have live reindeer. Beverley Garden Centre and Coletta & Tyson in Woodmansey have grottos and Heritage Garden Centre in Melton have Supper with Santa. The local Country Houses also have Santa appearances and festive events running. Burton Agnes have Father Christmas every weekend and their popular ‘An Audience with Father Christmas’ events are running. Normanby Hall have Santa and a visit includes a ride on their miniature train. If you want to see a panto there are lots to choose from. The following venues all have a panto or Christmas show running - Hull Truck, ERT (East Riding Theatre Beverley), Beverley Memorial Hall, Bridlington Spa, Fruit, Hessle Town Hall, The Lightstream Stadium (Hull KR ground) and Hull City Hall.

I built the original Mumbler website 18 months ago whilst I was on maternity leave with my second baby to make one place to list all things to do locally with children. Minding The Minster
Reverend Jeremy Fletcher announces his departure. My earliest recollection of a religious teacher, apart from my parents, was a lady called Mrs Cyr who was responsible for preparing me and a classroom full of other unruly seven-yearolds for our First Holy Communions. She had long, black hair, of which I was very jealous and which competed with the Gospel for my attention in class. I liked her very much (perhaps because of her hair) and I wanted to please her by learning my prayers and being a good pupil for her. I suppose whatever she did worked, because I still remember her, and the prayers she taught me.

The religious teachers one encounters along the course of their lives can have great impacts on them, just as academic teachers help to shape our careers by being motivational and inspirational through the love of their subjects. With the same dedication and insight to their subject matter, a priest or vicar can lead and inspire. But there’s more, of course. There’s the pastoral aspect: advice given, prayers prayed, the
being present for life’s great moments such as Holy Matrimony, the baptism of children, the hospital bedside, graveside. For almost eight years, the parish of Beverley Minster has been led by the Reverend Jeremy Fletcher, who announced last month that he is leaving us to be the new vicar of St John’s Church in Hampstead, London. His absence will be felt in big ways, like his memorable sermons on Sundays, and in small ways, like a subtle, celebratory raised eyebrow to his Head Virger when something goes particularly well. An interrugnum can bring a congregation together as we come to terms with the absence of our leader, and while we look ahead to the arrival of a new vicar. Jeremy takes his place amoung the other vicars of this fabulous place, and leaves his own legacy here. And while I was never jealous of his hair, I know that like my first childhood religious teacher, I will always remember him and the things he taught me. God speed, Jeremy! Free Christmas parking Lucky winners of returns to the East Riding the Treasure House this festive season Children’s Trail 2016 Residents and visitors preparing for the festive season in the East Riding will be able to park their vehicles free of charge during the four weekends running up to, and including, Christmas. The popular scheme will apply to all council-run on-street and offstreet car parks, with pay and display machines in these locations being clearly marked to let shoppers know there is no charge for the weekends of 3-4, 10-11, 17-18 and 24-25 December, from 8am on Saturday until 8am on Monday. The start of the scheme will once again coincide with Small Business Saturday a national day that aims to promote the importance of small and independent traders. Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of the council, said: “Thanks to this authority’s sound financial management, we are able to once again run this very popular scheme which has real and tangible benefits for both local businesses and motorists. “The East Riding is home to some of the most vibrant and diverse
14 market towns in the country. Suspending parking charges in
the run up to Christmas is a practical way to help boost the local economy.” Maria Kamper, manager of The Promenades Shopping Centre, in Bridlington, said: “What a fantastic opportunity for our community to shop locally and save money on parking, which can be an additional unwanted cost at such an expensive time of year. I’m sure this very positive initiative will be welcomed by shoppers and many businesses across the town too!” Whilst parking charges are suspended, motorists are advised that normal parking rules still apply, such as those around disabled parking bays, maximum stays and controlled parking zones (CPZ).
Three lucky winners have received their prizes, after taking part in this year’s Treasure House Children’s Trail in Beverley. Becky Hitchenor, aged 9 of Beverley, won first prize - a family pass to Sewerby Hall and Gardens, as well as craft materials. Second prize went to Zac Barber, aged 13 from Louth, who won a family visit to Skidby Mill, and craft materials. Third prize was won by Abigail Little, aged 9(nearly 10) of Roos, who received a bouquet of craft materials. All three children took part in the Treasure House Children’s Trail over the summer holidays and entered the popular prize draw. Education officer Sarah Hammond, said : “The annual Children’s Trail is becoming a ‘must do’ on many families’ summer holiday activity wish lists. Grandparents often bring their grandchildren over the summer, as Abigail did this year with her grandad. “It’s a great opportunity to explore the Treasure House building, have some fun and take a closer look at some of the fabulous exhibits on display.” The prizes were awarded at the Treasure House Museum by Nial Adams, Museums Manager, who said: ‘Thank you for taking part in this year’s Treasure House Children’s Trail and congratulations to the three lucky winners. This is a fantastic way to get involved with the Treasure House each year, and I really hope the winners enjoy their prizes.”

BUNDLES OF JOY CHARITY A brand new charity has been launched in Beverley and the East Riding. The newly launched Bundles of Joy is to help provide much needed baby equipment and clothes for families who need it most in our area. The charity has been founded by 2 local mums who understand the joys and pressures of parenthood and want to help those in need. Zoe and Claire are both qualified Birth and Antenatal Educators, Claire is a qualified Doula and Zoe is a qualified Breast Feeding Peer Supporter. Within their work and over the years they have come into contact with couples who try their best to provide for their unborn baby and/or family but it’s not always easy. By providing a bundle of joy they want to be able to ensure they are doing all they can to help. Bundles of Joy was launched on 21st November 2016 by asking for any donations of clothes, toiletries, nappies, toys,

Moses baskets, bouncy chairs and all things baby. The charity has limited storage for now provided free of charge by a local electrical company Qudos Energy Limited. Donations can be collected or dropped off to Claire or Zoe. Zoe says “We have been overwhelmed with support, donations and interest in our charity. The generosity of the public has been fantastic, so that is why we have decided to reach out to other members of our community. Communities work best, when they come together and support each other no matter of their life story.” The charity is hoping to apply for funding to cover their travel costs of collecting items and also the cleaning equipment needed to ensure they supply good condition items. The funding will also allow them to grow the services they will be offering. In the very near future they are hoping for a website to be designed and their logo is currently being brought to life and will be revealed soon. 1 Orange roughly chopped 185g Butter melted 3 Eggs 1 cup Caster sugar 1 1/2 cup Self-raising flour 2 tbs Poppy seeds
Method
Preheat oven to 170C. Grease and line an 18 cm cake pan or a loaf tin. Puree whole orange in food processor. Add melted butter, eggs, sugar and mix well. Add flour and poppy seeds and mix until well combined. Bake for approx. 45 min.

Illegal street trader warning for Christmas shoppers Christmas shoppers in the East Riding are being warned to be alert for illegal street traders and pedlars who may be offering below standard goods. At a time when many Christmas fairs are taking place, officers from East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s licensing and trading standards teams are warning people to be alert for traders offering what appear to be bargain toys, food and other seasonal goods. Goods which are not authentic, such as toiletries, may contain ingredients that could be harmful while toys may not display any age recommendation or the CE mark, which is required by law on all toys for sale on the European market. Street trading in the East Riding is illegal, unless the trader has been given consent to do so by the council. Those who do have consent to trade will have an identification badge, which must be worn at all times.
Councillor Shaun Horton, portfolio holder for community involvement and local partnerships at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Everyone likes to grab a bargain but sometimes shoppers can get more than they bargained for if goods are bought from an unlicensed street trader and are later found to be faulty or dangerous, or food that has been purchased has not been through the necessary safety and hygiene checks. “People are unlikely to find the same trader again to exchange goods or to make a complaint to or if the trader is found it is unlikely that there will be a receipt or proof of purchase. “In the run up to Christmas licensing and trading standards officers will be out and about checking for unlicensed traders and goods which are of poor standards so people can shop safely and with confidence.” Anyone who would like more information or advice about unlicensed street traders and pedlars should contact the council’s licensing team by emailing: licensing@eastriding.gov.uk or for more information on product safety email the trading standards team at tradingstandards@eastriding.gov.uk

The bleak midwinter...
We always knew that this season would be a struggle. Any newly promoted team needs strengthening and great spirit within the team, club structure and fans. In 2008 we had this in abundance till December and the infamous pitch side rollocking at Manchester City. This season is becoming a different story and it looks to a worrying future ahead of Hull City..
As we approach December the team is in a downward spiral, coaches and administrators are quitting the club and fans have rarely been so dispirited. We have had bad times before, the Mike Smith era, Receivership, the Fish and Dolan era, David Lloyd era and many more but we the fans had spirit, we rallied, we raised money and we always dreamed of better times. The sad thing is that we are in our better times, Premier League football, new stadium, FA Cup Final and European football. These were just a dream of the Tigers 2000 campaign twenty years ago.

At the heart of all of this is the fact we are powerless in this. We are reliant on owners paying a £50 million wage bill and we will only see a change if someone offers them over £100 million to sell. They don’t even attend matches so protests will make little difference and empty seats similarly. Both long standing fans of the club and the fans of the future have already been priced out so once again we are irrelevant. The days of finding someone from your home town to buy the club have long gone, it’s no longer £1 million to buy City but £130 million and the people supposedly keen are all from China or America. They only see us as a commodity to make money and without Sky income and Premier League status we won’t. The clubs value is totally unrealistic. We don’t own the ground, have little big time history, just 12,000 pass holders and a squad struggling to remain in this division
including several key players potentially out of contract in seven months. This brings us to the big issue of will they actually sell the club? It would appear that three consortiums are now out of the running. Two were tired of negotiating with Ehab and the third group rejected by the Premier League standards committee and pushed onto back burner ever since. Allegedly two remain but who would realistically wish to spend £130 million on a team looking relegation certainties. If they had this kind of money then wouldn’t it be easier to buy Leeds, Ipswich or Nottingham Forest and take them up instead for a smaller fee and also buy a stadium site for further investment. £130 million just buys the tenant of the KC Stadium. Sorry if this has moved a long way from what’s happening on the pitch but everything is linked. If a takeover could be agreed in the summer or the owners backed Steve Bruce he would probably still be here. If the owners did not have such a bad reputation one of the managerial candidates may have taken on the role. If money was to be made available it should have been before the last 48 hours of the transfer window and the funds should have been sufficient to strengthen all positions but glaring weaknesses at fullback and forward line remained. Mike Phelan was the last man standing so he gained the managers role and after a promising start people are now questioning his ability whilst Steve Bruce has plundered his assistants for Villa. Hopefully Phelan and his new coaching team will begin to pull things together but the bottom line is whether we are actually good enough? The one thread of optimism that fans had was a takeover by the new year, lots of new
players (if we could tempt anyone) and even a more experienced manager if this became necessary. All of this looks unlikely unless their a massive reality check by the Allams following the Sunderland embarrassment and they accept any offers on the table. The club will be worth a pittance by February if deep in relegation trouble so the TV bonanza will be over for them and they will never get their money back. Common sense would say sell and get £80- £100 million and get most of their ‘investment’ back unfortunately the Allams and common sense do not go hand in hand. As we head towards Christmas arguably there are games which can be won. All is not yet lost and who knows they may pull themselves out of the mire but sadly the club is in a mess both on and off the pitch. Let’s hope for more optimism in the new year. Merry Christmas.

Polar Bear Safari..

This year my winter started in October when I headed out to Hudson Bay and the remote town of Churchill, located in the Province of Manitoba, Canada to see the Polar Bears. The season to see the Polar Bears lasts just 5 weeks, whilst the ice is forming on the bay and the bears migrate north along the shore hoping to get to the ice a little earlier to commence their hunting season. They need to fill their tummies as much as possible to sustain their body through the summer when food is none existent for them. This was an adventure that had been on my to do list for many years and I have to say it did not disappoint me. The bears where so close to us it was amazing to see them behaving naturally in the wild. Churchill is not reachable by road. A train goes in to town 3 times a week but for quickness we flew up on a special charter flight and our whole tour was enjoyed in just a 6 night holiday. Guided throughout ensured we got the very best experience. You can enjoy wildlife experiences all over the world and it is superb to see the animals in their own habitat. The characteristics of the Penguins in Antarctica were amazing I had know idea they had so many human mannerisms. Whilst on a Tiger Safari in India I felt I was on the a film set for the Lion King as the call of the animals was brought to life! There are many opportunities to witness something special. For instance if you holiday in the summer months you can witness the migration across the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania. For the big 5 you head to Africa for great sightings. I remember my first experience in Kenya as it was the dry season so sightings were more difficult. We found a wonderful lion with cubs, plus Hippos and a Cheetah which was not expected but I desperately needed to see a Giraffe. I was so pleased when we found a mother with her young one it was the icing on the cake. Western Canada & Alaska allows you to enjoy wonderful scenery whilst you are on the look out for Bears, Moose, Whales and much more. One day I was shocked to see the bears asleep at the tops of the trees. We heard a rustling looked up and we had stumbled across them before they had risen for their breakfast! Whilst enjoying a bike ride along the shore path in Anchorage a Moose poked its head out of the bushes, you can imagine we where startled. Wildlife is often there watching you and you are totally unaware. Birds should not be forgotten, I am no expert twitcher but my travels have been enhanced with the sight of rare species I always have my binoculars to hand (in fact a monical in my handbag always)! December Gardening General tasks and garden maintenance Carry on digging over beds and borders and incorporate as much organic matter as you can. Forking over not only helps prepare the soil for next year, it helps reduce pests by exposing them to hungry birds. Protect pots and taps from frost by wrapping insulation around them. Bubble wrap is ideal and probably in plentiful supply if you are ordering Christmas presents over the internet! Clear paths of moss and lichen, treat timber with preservative, repair fences, check sheds and walls (but avoid any concreting until there is no chance of frost), clean and insulate greenhouses (that bubble wrap again!) and ensure heaters are working properly. Even a little insulation will make a huge difference to your heating bill. Clean and repair your garden tools and clock the lawn mower in for a service. New tools are always a welcome present, as are new gardening gloves... especially good quality ones.

Clear debris - this is vital to prevent slugs and snails from setting up home in those lovely warm and damp conditions! However, a plea for wildlife... An artless pile of sticks and logs will make a wonderful ‘des res’ for hibernating hedgehogs and the like, so please don’t be too ferocious on the tidying front. Make leaf mould out of fallen leaves they will rot down into fantastically fertile matter after a year (2 for oak leaves). Store wet leaves (they must be wet to rot) in large black plastic sacks forked with holes or piled into a chicken wire container or similar.
Failing that, add them to the compost heap. Take care not to let leaves accumulate around alpines - they will die if left damp for long. Cover bare patches around clumps with gritty compost to encourage regrowth. Don’t forget the birds This month birds will really need our help - make sure clean water is available and that after a frost it does not remain frozen. Buy good quality bird food and fat or suet balls, ensure feeding stations are well out of the way of cats and enjoy the company of our feathered friends throughout the winter! Trees, shrubs and climbers From now until March is the ideal time to plant bare rooted deciduous hedging - the most economical way to establish a hedge. Beech and hornbeam (similar to beech but more suitable for heavy soils) both keep their leaves over the winter and are therefore good for screening, whilst hawthorn is the ‘country classic’ - perfect for a natural looking yet almost impenetrable barrier. Prepare a trench, preferably a week or so before planting to give the soil a chance to settle. Wait until the ground is neither sodden nor frozen and plant away - it’s worth waiting for the right conditions; your plants will be perfectly happy sitting in the pots of compost they came in for weeks!

As we head into winter, spare a thought for your elderly parents, grandparents, friends and neighbours. As many of you know I was lucky enough to be invited to compere the Women of Achievement Awards in Hull again this year – and our guest speaker was Esther Rantzen who, as well as setting up Childline 30 years ago, more recently set up the lesser known Silver Line, a 24hour helpline to tackle loneliness in the elderly. According to the charity Age UK, more than one million older people regularly go an entire month without speaking to anyone. Half of all people aged 75 and over live alone and one in 10 people 65 or over say they always, or often, 38 feel lonely. And staggeringly, in less than 3 years of opening the Silver Line, they have received over one million calls from the lonely and isolated – and Christmas and New Year is a particularly difficult time. I don’t know about you, but these are heartbreaking statistics. I’m sure there’s something we can all do. The Silver Line helpline number is 0800 4 70 80 90. Pass it on or, if you yourself are feeling lonely, call the number any time, day or night, even if it’s 3am in the early hours of the morning.
CLEAR OUT OVER CHRISTMAS
Christmas is one of those times of year that all of a sudden you realise you just simply have too much “stuff” in your house! Am I right? I know I’m right! And the age old question – where on earth am I going to put these new Christmas presents? The answer, of course, is to clear out some of that “stuff!” It’s actually a really good excuse to have a bit of a spring clean in winter! If you’re organised, you can do it before Christmas, but if you’re working right up to the festive season you could look at it as a New Year’s resolution. An uncluttered home is a happy home! I guess I’d better get busy then! And finally, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Enjoy spending time with your family. Don’t stress if dinner isn’t served at exactly 1pm. It will be ready when it’s ready – and it will be lovely!!
