ELECTION OF PASTURE MASTERS A Beverley election steeped in ancient tradition will soon take place at the Guildhall, when 12 new Pasture Masters and two Auditors will be chosen by the Pasture Freemen. The election will take place between 9am and 4pm on SATURDAY, 1 MARCH 2014. As written in the Beverley Pasture Act of 1836, both the electors and elected must have their names entered in the Pasture Freemen’s Roll. Nominations forms can now be obtained from the clerk to the Pasture Masters at 6 St Giles Croft, Beverley, HU17 8LA, telephone 01482 882140. Completed forms must be returned to the clerk, at the same address, no later than noon on FRIDAY 14 FEBRUARY 2014. Voting papers will then be prepared, listing the names of all those who have been nominated. Those whose names are entered on the Roll are entitled to vote for up to 12 Pasture Masters and up to two Auditors by completing, signing and delivering a voting paper that can only be obtained from the Town Mayor of Beverley or Presiding Officer at the Guildhall, Beverley, on the day of the election. This procedure has been arranged for the convenience of all Pasture Freemen, but it will not prevent a Freeman from exercising their traditional right to vote at the election for any other Freeman, whether or not that person has been nominated or appears on the voting paper. The Town Mayor or Presiding Officer has the power

to close the poll at any time before 4pm if twenty minutes elapse during which no voting has taken place. Those appointed Freemen of Beverley who reside in the Parishes of Beverley, Molescroft and Woodmansey are eligible to stand for election as a Pasture master and vote at these elections. ISSUED ON BEHALF OF THE BEVERLEY PASTURE MASTERS. For further information, please contact Deborah Sedman, senior electoral services officer, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Tel: (01482) 393311.

The Preston-based developer is proposing a retail scheme which will be delivered as a joint venture project with Leeds-based developer, Yorvale. The proposed development will include a large food store, with a petrol filling station and ancillary non-food stores on the 4.8 hectare site. Paul Bell, head of economic development at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The council is pleased that the development of the Grovehill site has moved a step closer to meet a known demand. “We will be working with the developer to help secure a quality retail scheme that will secure new jobs in the construction and retail sectors and contribute to the wellbeing of the local economy.” As the landowner, the council selected Maple Grove Developments as the preferred bidder for the scheme several months ago and, with negotiations on the legal agreement now concluded, a planning application for the development is expected to be submitted in the summer and will be considered by the council’s planning committee in due course.. Chris Evenson, managing director of Maple Grove Developments, said: “After a long period of negotiation, we are delighted to have concluded the legal agreement with East Riding of Yorkshire Council. We are aware that Sainsbury’s has been looking to open a new store in Beverley for some time and we will now need to enter into discussions to see if a deal can be negotiated that will make them the main occupier on the development.”

We also arrange memorial work in local cemeteries and churchyards Distance no object. Offices at: Main Street, Brandesburton & Southgate, Hornsea

MILK MEMORIES KEPT FRESH IN THE ARCHIVES The day of the milkman is long gone. Doorstep deliveries of fresh pints of milk in glass bottles are virtually a thing of the past, but for a few hardy souls who strive to keep the work of the milkman alive. For many of us though, it is a sad fact, brought about by increased availability of milk in the supermarkets, and changes to our lifestyle, that the need for the milkman delivering to our door is no more. So how do we preserve the cherished memory of our friendly milkman? The answer lies at the East Riding Archives & Local Studies Service in Beverley, where records from a local dairy have just been made available to the public. The archives of Thompsons Dairies of Beverley document the activities of the dairy from the 1940’s to the early 1990’s and include photographs of old milk floats, and a daily log of deliveries made to schools in the East Riding.

10

BeverleyMag FEBRUARY 2014 Thompsons Dairies was first established in 1882 as a small-scale operation in the yard of 97 Keldgate, Beverley. It later grew to become the chief supplier of milk and other dairy products in the Beverley area and was a strong competitor to Dale Farm. A major East Riding business; it ceased trading in 1992, but its memory will live on in the archives.

School milk truck circa 1970’s The archives can be requested to view in the Research Room of the Treasure House, Champney Road, Beverley. For more details call (01482) 392790.

Sam Bartle, collections officer, said: “As generations come and go, these archives will act as a reminder of the days of the milkman, and teach us about what was once a way of life for millions.”

Sales records reveal exactly what was sold by the business on a weekly basis, including non-dairy produce like fruit juice and bread.

SPRING WEDDINGS FEATURE

On Saturday 1st March, 2014, Beverley Minster will once again open its doors to the Spring Wedding Fair. Seating will be removed and in its place the Minster will be transformed into a ‘Wedding shopping arcade’ for all ‘would be’ brides and grooms. We have a wide and varied range of exhibitors attending from across the local region offering great value products and a wealth of help and advice. We can offer you assistance in booking your reception venue, flowers, cakes, wedding transportation, the all important dress, menswear, wedding favours, invites, photographers, rings, in fact you name and it will be available. Outside the Minster we hope to have a range of wedding cars and coaches. Brides – why don’t you bring your dad and husband-to- be along and leave them in the ‘Man creche’? Yes, once again we have secured the services of the F1 Simulator Car, so the

boys can play (I do hope that I get a faster lap time than my husband!!) while you have fun checking out the dresses or enjoying a cup of tea whilst watching the cat-walk show! We have two great cat-walk shows for you this spring, 12.30pm and 2pm. Each show will offer a fantastic range of bridal wear and menswear. There will also be a touch of vintage on the cat walk and we are delighted to have a collection of hats by local designer, Allen Crawford, which are sure to be show stoppers! In between the cat-walk shows, we will have live music from the region’s best wedding singers and entertainers, who would be happy to discuss with you how they can help to make your wedding, a perfect and memorable day for you and your guests. The Wedding Fair is open from 11am until 3pm and is free to attend. We very much hope to see you all there!

Spring Weddings

BeverleyMag FEBRUARY 2014

Everybody loves a great wedding and it is every girls dream day so we have put together some little words of advice as well as the best wedding suppliers in the East Yorkshire area to help you realise your dreams. It’s NOT all about the perfect wedding Too many work through a wanna-have list – a film star dress, flowing champagne, platinum rings, a five-star honeymoon. Only then, they ask how they’ll pay for it. One disgruntled father told us: “I asked my daughter what her budget was. She asked me, ‘Dad, how can I work out my budget until I know what I want?’” So, instead, ask “what can we afford to spend on our wedding?” Then work out how to have the best do possible within that budget. A picnic in a park with close friends can be just as magical as a blingy bash for 300. Play the wedding prioritisation game Once you know your budget, the aim’s to work out how much you can actually afford to spend on different areas and prioritise what’s important to YOU.

18

Write down all the things you need to spend cash on on a different

CN Photography

piece of card – from cakes to cars, rings to registry office fees – always keeping in mind that you don’t need to stick to convention or have everything your peers tell you you “need”. Discuss what’s most important to both of you. You may fancy a funky themed wedding cake, but would you prefer a honeymoon abroad? Or a professional photographer? Remember, venue costs are likely to be about one third to half of your budget. Being aware of how you can trade one item for another helps you see how far your budgeted cash will go. If it doesn’t go as far as you want, you need to change your list - but not your budget. The end result may be that you can’t afford the wedding Don’t let the wedding ruin your marriage Before we get too far into this, and you skip straight to this guide’s bargain-grabbing section, it really is worth pausing to think about the financial effect of your celebration. As our accountant says, “While a wedding is a wonderful dream day, it’s important to remember one of the biggest causes of divorce is debt and financial worries. “If the cost of your wedding leaves you financially crippled and in debt for most of your married life, it’s a pointless waste.”

“THE LARGEST WEDDING FAIR IN BEVERLEY & EAST YORKSHIRE”

To exhibit please telephone Jane on: 01964 552 470 or Email: ask@daltonspire.co.uk Pick an unusual day and season The venue usually creates the biggest dent in your budget. So get this right and you’ll be on to a budget bash winner. Pick an unpopular day. Friday or Sundays can cut the cost of the reception venue by up to half - Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays by even more. Discounts are often available for photographers, florists and ceremonies too. Of course, fewer guests may be able to attend if you pick a weekday – perhaps another way to keep costs down. Major savings are possible on winter weddings due to fewer bookings. BeverleyMags own Jane cut the cost of her venue by over a third by getting married in November. Top questions to ask venues Some venues have more hidden charges than Ryanair - one of my friends had to pay extra to hire a cake knife. So before booking, pose as many questions as possible and get important answers in writing. Here are some of the key questions to ask before signing - hopefully they’ll help you find a suitable but cheap wedding venue: • How much is corkage? • Does the price include VAT?

• Are there any extra staff costs? • Is there a minimum headcount or charge per person? • Is the cloakroom free? • Are there extra costs for lighting? • Is there a marquee hire charge? • Is service included? • Any charge for tables, crockery, glasses, linen or chairs? • Will we get exclusive use or are there other weddings • there on the same day? • Do they give reduced room rates for your guests? Bridal tips When you’re having your hair styled on your wedding day, wear a shirt. Many brides wear a t-shirt, then struggle to get it over their newly coiffeured head. If you wear a shirt it can be unbuttoned and will not damage your hairdo. If you have a dress that goes over your head, get a pillow case or a silk underskirt to put over your head first. This way your dress will slide on more easily with damaging hair or getting any make-up on it. Remove labels on the underside of shoes – a very fiddly and timeconsuming job that is best sorted in advance. If your dress has laces or buttons, ask a friend to come and help you dress. Often a bridesmaid or family member will be there for bridal

If you have a friend present who isn’t in the bridal party they will be able to help the bride to get dressed. Dress the bride first. Lots of people dress the bride last so everyone is ready to help, but if plans start to run behind it will be the bride who is in a rush to get dressed. If you dress the bride first she can get ready at her own pace, feel relaxed and have time to make any adjustments to her dress for maximum comfort. It is not the bride’s job to dress the bridesmaids or any children – make sure you have plenty of helpers to do this so that she can enjoy her wedding day. Gentlemen – you need to plan ahead! This may seem obvious, but remember your socks! Far too many grooms get married without socks and it can sometimes be seen on photographs. If you usually have your head shaven don’t do it on the day of your wedding or you will look bald or shiny on photographs. Have your head shaved at least one week prior to your wedding to allow time for some of it to grow back. As with the ladies take the labels off the sole of shoes. Your buttonhole is traditionally worn on your left lapel – whichever side you prefer, ensure that you and your ushers all wear their buttonholes on the same side.

The most important thing for both bride and groom is to forget about everybody else on the day and enjoy your wedding day! The planning is complete and it’s time to have a great day. Whatever happens you need to take it in your stride – don’t dwell on minor mishaps, but laugh at them and enjoy yourself. Never lose sight of the reason you are there – to become husband and wife. Your Wedding Dress With regards to your wedding dress and style, you will be receiving a good deal of advice from all corners on the subject of your dress. Always remember, however, that your final choice should express your taste, not that of the designer, your mother, your sister or your best friend. Spend time looking through wedding magazines, which can help you get an idea of what styles you like, but shop with an open mind. I have known of brides who were sure they wanted a slim-line wedding gown but have changed their minds in favour of a full skirted one, having tried on ones in this style. The best advice I have heard is that your dress should be a glamorised version of your everyday style - if you are not one for frills and flounces, don’t feel you need a wedding dress in this style. Likewise, if you are an incurable romantic, you will probably not feel at ease in a classically designed garment. You should also take into account the kind of wedding you plan to have. A relaxed, casual wedding on a beach will require a very different style of dress to a formal evening affair.

Your First Dance Some couples love the idea of performing a well-practiced routine in front of their wedding guests; others are terrified at the thought. Whether you are at one of these extremes or somewhere in between, the perfect first dance can be yours. Before anything else you need to choose ‘your song’. Most couples pick first-dance music that is special to them: perhaps a song they listened to when they first met, or a romantic ditty that reflects their feelings for each other. Other choices could be music that fits with the theme of your wedding, or perhaps a lighthearted tune that mirrors your personalities and will make your wedding guests chuckle. There’s nothing wrong with a funny first dance! Before you make your final choice of first dance song, be sure to listen to – and preferably also read – the words of the song. It’s amazing how many romantic-sounding songs turn out to be less appropriate than you might think. For example, couples have been known to choose ‘Every Breath You Take’ by The Police – allegedly about a stalker – or ‘Perfect Day’ by Lou Reed, about the singer’s heroin habit. Chat to your wedding DJ. If you are having a DJ play your first dance, make sure they have the song in their collection. This should be discussed well in advance, as should the rest of the evening’s play list. Most of all, congratulations and enjoy the day together.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to two children and a husband.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS Most of us make them, but do any of us keep them? Whether it’s exercising more, losing weight, making time for yourself and your family, stopping those nasty habits (smoking or drinking too much alcohol), being more organised or deciding to help others by volunteering – they all seem achievable, but do we really believe we’re actually going to succeed? The key, as in most things, is to have a plan. Set your goal and decide how you’re going to make it happen – and if you hit a hurdle, know how you’re going to get over it and continue on your journey. If we all did just one thing to improve our life and the lives of those around us, it would do us all the world of good and motivate us to do more. CHILDREN NOT SLEEPING! I’m sure we’ve all experienced this and trying to fathom out what you can do to help is frustrating to say the least. We’re 30 going through this at the moment with one of ours. We’ve tried everything. We always read bedtime stories, so that’s a given. We’ve tried a soothing bath, warm milk, no screen time for at least an hour before bedtime – the list goes on and on. It’s not that they’re trying to be naughty by not sleeping or trying to angle to sleep with Mummy and Daddy. Sometimes they simply don’t seem to be able to switch off. I’m hoping it’s just a phase! Any suggestions are more than welcome! THE WEATHER? This seems to be one of my favourite topics of conversation at the moment – sad but true! And I know I‘m not alone because we’re all wondering the same thing! I thought we’d been told we were going to have one of the worst winters in living memory – but at the time of writing we seem to be having an extremely mild winter (I think I’ve only had to scrape my windscreen three times so far), interspersed with some bitter cold wind and occasional downpours. On a purely practical level, it also makes it extremely difficult to know what to wear every morning because the temperature changes dramatically from one hour to the next. And no snow, despite various claims in the press. I don’t know about you, and I’m not one to bet, but I’d like to know the odds for a white Easter!
