Graham Stuart MP:

Stepping up my campaign for better local broadband I have stepped up my campaign to ensure a better broadband service for local residents. As the Government announces a new drive to achieve universal super-fast broadband across the UK by 2020, I am making sure that customers in Beverley and Holderness are not left behind. In July, for example, I arranged and attended a meeting in North Newbald to allow the Parish Council to speak personally to Kcom and inform them of the high level of local demand for their

ultra-fast Lightstream broadband. Like other areas around Beverley, parts of North Newbald already receive ultrafast and superfast broadband but there are many residents who are missing out. Many homes have been making do with outdated BT broadband and are waiting for BT to upgrade them, which BT has no plan to do at present. Additionally, four or five roads have been allocated for potential commercial upgrade by Kcom, but the company say they will only consider putting in fibre to these homes if enough interest is shown. In other parts of the village, Kcom has said that it will offer superfast broadband by 2020 but residents feel they should not have to wait so long, especially as Kcom infrastructure already serves their houses. I have mounted a sustained campaign to improve broadband provision across the area in line with national developments, grass and clover at Cherry Burton, near Beverley. From 7th August 2017, local people will be able to purchase milk straight from the specialist milk vending machine. The machine is sited in ‘The Milk Shed’ at Field House Farm on Etton Road, Cherry Burton. The public can just drive up to the Milk Shed between 7am to 7pm daily to get their fresh milk. Cherry View Milk owner Becky Waring (pictured right) says “Cherry View Milk is bringing you the opportunity to buy the

I am a long-standing advocate of local access to effective broadband connections, having championed the plight of Burstwick business Agenda Security Services amongst others during my time as Chair of freshest milk, straight from a local, family owned farm. The milk is not homogenised or standardised so you will get a good old-fashioned layer of cream on the top of your bottle. It’s a product that you just can’t buy nowadays and I want to remind people what ‘proper milk’ tastes like”. Have your children flown the nest? Our top tips for downsizing… Like many parents, you will have raised your children in your current family home, but after they have fled the nest to attend University or start the next chapter in their life, you may find yourself in home that feels too big. Lesley Stagg and her partner recently downsized their property; take a look at their top tips below.

“With our daughters having left home and living their own lives around the world, we decided that it was time to sell our family home and downsize to a smaller house.

Reasons to downsize 1.

Empty Nesters. Like us, you might be empty nesters who now rattle around in the large family home and

BeverleyMag August 2017

off your mortgage or move to lower monthly mortgage payments, releasing money for other things.

Suitable properties for downsizing 1. Location. Obviously you’ll need to decide this first. Do you want to stay in the same location as your current house, or is this your chance to try something different? Move to the city vs move to the country, move closer to the kids vs move further away!

just need a more suitable property for the number of permanent occupants. I do sometimes think about how we will accommodate any potential grandkids, but I think that’s a long way off and wasn’t it loads of fun to camp out in a put -you-up bed at Grandma’s when we were kids?

2.

Less maintenance, etc. For me this is a great incentive to downsize – less rooms to clean! It obviously depends on the style of property you choose, but a smaller property usually means less maintenance, smaller household bills and less garden to look after. Less time spent on your house will mean more time to pursue other things, such as your hobbies and visiting your offspring.

3.

Release equity. Selling to downsize could release some funds so that you have a cash injection for that dream trip you’ve always promised yourself, or to realise other dreams you may have.

2. Property Type. It might be a bit of a cliché to suggest a bungalow or a flat as your downsize options in later life. But it might be best not to be tied to those options as you can always move again later.

4.

Mortgage payments. If you sold your current property and bought a cheaper property then you could pay

3.

New Build. Thinking about having less maintenance then a new build property might be an excellent choice.

LOVE YOUR LIVER

even liver disease. The symptoms of a troubled liver include fatigue and a general feeling of weakness, digestion problems, bloating and gas, trouble concentrating, nausea, constipation, poor appetite, unexplained weight loss or gain, excessive sweating, yellowing of the skin and tongue, and headaches.

The importance of taking care of our largest internal organ

Because the liver plays such a key role in so many of our bodily functions, it’s important that we look after it and keep it healthy to avoid the aforementioned problems. Here are some of my favourite ways of doing just that:

In my attempts to be as healthy as possible and adopt a wholesome, organic lifestyle, I have realised how important proper liver function is and that good health is directly linked to how well we look after and support our liver. It is one of the hardest working organs in the body and is responsible for a range of functions linked to digestion, metabolism, immunity and the storage of nutrients. It works tirelessly to detoxify our blood by destroying old red blood cells, produce the bile needed to digest fat, process hormones and store essential vitamins, minerals and iron. It also secretes chemicals that are needed by other parts of the body, breaks down alcohol and medications we take and makes sure that we can digest our food properly. An unhealthy diet and poor lifestyle can overwork and overload this vital organ, leaving it unable to process toxins and fats the way it is designed to do and resulting in sluggish function, poor health and

BeverleyMag August 2017

EATING LIVER-FRIENDLY FOOD There are a number of foods that can help to cleanse, detoxify and rejuvenate the liver, and for the maximum benefits you should opt for organic produce. It’s important to include healthy fats, such as avocados, salmon and nuts, in your diet as well as green, leafy vegetables which stimulate the flow of bile. Apples and papayas

are good fruits to eat as the pectin in apples removes toxins from the digestive tract and papaya helps with digestion. As for liquids, I would recommend lemon water, vegetable broths and juices containing lots of veg. MAKING LIFESTYLE CHANGES If you haven’t already, then cut out smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and fast food as these are all major stressors and causes of liver disease. You might be unknowingly overworking your liver but you can give it a break by changing how and what you eat. Overeating strains it and makes it go into overdrive to do all of its work (and also leaves us feeling sluggish) so try stopping when you’re about 80 percent full. This will give your liver the chance to get through its to do list without being overburdened. You can also give your digestive tract a rest from time to time by eating small, light vegetarian and alkaline meals as these require little energy to

be processed which will ease the pressure on your liver too. Getting enough sleep and not going to bed too late is key as the liver is said to be most actively cleaning the body between 1am and 4am, and of course, make sure you’re doing regular exercise. USING HERBS & SUPPLEMENTS There are so many natural remedies that can be used to promote optimal liver function. A particularly prominent one is milk thistle which is widely known to be effective for a variety of liver problems – make sure you choose one that is organically grown and free from additives. Both lemon juice and apple cider vinegar restore alkalinity to the body which helps to detoxify the liver and I like to take a tablespoon of either with a teaspoon of honey before meals. Licorice is an excellent remedy for non-alcoholic fatty liver conditions – put one tablespoon of licorice root powder into a strainer, place on top of a mug and pour boiling water over it then drink. Turmeric offers a myriad of benefits and is recommended for general health and liver support, plus it can be added to lots of different things. A healthy liver is so important for our wellbeing and healing the body is very difficult without giving this vital organ some TLC! However, in cases of chronic impaired liver function, ongoing symptoms of illness or if you are taking any medication, always consult a medical professional before self-medicating.

Roald Dahl centenary portraits now on display at Central Library - Hull To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of one of the best-loved children’s authors of all time, Roald Dahl, ten new portraits of Dahl’s most famous characters by Sir Quentin Blake are now on display at Hull Central Library.

Part of the Living Knowledge Network and supported by the British Library, Sir Quentin Blake and Arts Council England, Hull is the first place exhibiting these new portraits outside of London, formerly on display at the British Library.

Dahl (1916 – 90) is one of the best-loved children’s authors of all time and for many people his work is inextricably linked with Blake’s distinctive illustrations. Today it is hard to imagine characters such as Matilda or the BFG without Blake’s illustrations immediately springing to mind.

Describing his project, children’s illustrator and cartoonist, Sir Quentin Blake said: “The Roald Dahl Centenary Portraits ask you to imagine that a number of Dahl’s characters have been invited to come and sit for their portrait; they are depicted, not quite as they appear in the illustrations, but more formally. The perceptive spectator may notice that one celebrated couple declined to appear together, and another formidable personality obviously disapproved of the whole venture. Nevertheless I hope you will be happy to see this group of well-known characters treated as though they were real people – which, of course, to many of us they are.”

Councillor Terry Geraghty, Hull City Council Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Tourism and Chair of Hull Culture & Leisure Limited, said: “We are incredibly lucky to be the first city out of London to host these new portraits, celebrating Roald Dahl’s 100th birthday. Our thanks go out to the British Library, Quentin Blake and Arts Council England for making this possible for Hull, a unique opportunity to see some well-known characters that have been so popular with families over the years. And of course we have a fantastic range of books and films available, if families would like to borrow them from the library!”

Illustration workshops with illustrator and cartoonist Calvin Innes will take place at libraries across Hull as he leads a series of illustration workshops for children aged seven and above, inspired by Sir Quentin Blake and Roald Dahl. They they take place on:
 l Saturday 5 August, Fred Moore Library between 10am – 12noon l Saturday 26 August, Hull Central Library, between 10am – 12noon

The exhibition is on display until Wednesday 13 September celebrating Roald Dahl Day and Roald Dahl’s 101st Birthday. With free admission, the exhibition is open: Monday and Tuesday: 9am – 5pm, Wednesday: 10am – 7.30pm, Thursday: 9.30am – 7.30pm, Friday: 9.30am – 3.30pm and Saturday: 10am – 4pm. Recipe: Orange syrup semolina cake with crème fraîche This soft, moist, buttery cake contrasts nicely with the tangy crème fraîche and makes an excellent dessert, with a small espresso coffee on the side. METHOD: Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan 160°C/gas 4. In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until well mixed. Add the orange zest and juice, then the eggs, one at a time, followed by the crème fraîche and mix well. Add the flour, baking power, semolina and salt and fold in. Transfer to the cake pan and bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour until golden brown. While the cake is baking, prepare the orange syrup. Place the orange juice and sugar in a small saucepan and gently heat, stirring, until the sugar has dissolved. Turn off the heat and wait until the pan has cooled, then mix in the orange flower water. Test whether or not the cake is ready by piercing with a fine skewer; if it comes out clean, the cake is cooked, if not, bake it for a few minutes longer. Remove the cake from the oven and place it on a rimmed baking sheet. While warm, pierce the top of the cake all over with a skewer. Pour over the orange syrup, then cover the cake and set it aside to cool and soak up the syrup, a few hours or overnight. BeverleyMag August 2017

Flemingate Food Market Returns to Beverley Sunday 13th August The event showcases the best in local and regional produce with indoor and outdoor stalls from 10am to 4pm, organised by Yorkshire Food Markets. Following its launch in April, the food market comes to town every second Sunday on a monthly basis and has really attracted the crowds. Andrew Riley, co-organiser of Yorkshire Food Markets, said: “We are delighted with how it’s gone so far in Beverley, one of East Yorkshire’s most beautiful and historic towns. “Customers can browse, taste and buy savoury pies, artisan bakes, fruit, vegetables, hot and cold street food and much more. “There could also be some more unusual products for sale on the day, so there will be something for everyone!” The Flemingate Centre in Beverley brings together food, fashion and film with a 500-space multi-storey car park and the town’s railway station close by.

9 FOODS FOR A BEACH BODY Sun’s out. Buns are out! Sticky buns, that is! They’re out of your diet if you want to hit the beach with the body of a swimsuit model. We’re smack dab in the heat of summertime. And if you’re not quite beach-body ready, it’s time to clean up your diet. You can rapidly lose pounds and shed belly fat by eliminating processed foods that fuel cravings and encourage fat storage. Instead, go green and clean by building satisfying meals around the nutrient-dense foods in this guide to the best weight-loss fare. So, grab a pen and put these on your shopping list! Sand and surf await. BANANAS: The potassium will help flatten your belly. Potassium-rich foods are ideal for looking and feeling slim and trim in that swimsuit, so think ahead and pack one in your bag before heading of to the gym or to work. Potassium is a nutrient that helps the body flush out water and sodium—two things that make you appear bloated. Conversely, foods like potato chips and pickles are packed with sodium that can force your body to retain water, which makes you swell. Besides providing a healthy dose of potassium, bananas also increase bloat-fighting bacteria in the stomach. CINNAMON: It turns of fat genes. Your beach trip with the girls is only a few weeks away, and thanks to your eversoftening stomach, you’re not looking forward to it as much as you should be. Don’t panic, the solution is a simple one: Add some cinnamon to your diet. The sweet spice helps reduce levels of the hormone insulin, so less of the sugar you consume is stored as fat. Sprinkle it in your cofee, in Greek yogurt, on apple slices, or in your

morning oatmeal and start seeing results. BEETROOT: A natural detoxifier. We’re definitely not on board with those food-free, detoxifying juice cleanses as a way to get ready to show of a little more skin, but adding some naturally detoxifying beets to your plate is a strategy we can get behind. These jewel-toned roots contain a type of antioxidant called betalains that help repair and regenerate cells in the liver, the body’s primary detox center. SWEETPOTATOES: Antioxidant carotenoids in sweet potatoes help to stabilize blood sugar levels and lower insulin resistance, which prevents calories from being converted into fat. The organic pigments that give the spuds their orange colour are also great for your skin and will add a sun-kissed glow to your complexion. What’s more, sweet potatoes’ high vitamin profile (including A, C, and B6) give you more energy to burn.

GREEN TEA: It clears out your fat cells. Adding a cup of green tea to your daily regimen can help fire up your fat furnace by controlling blood sugar and quashing hunger. MUSTARD: It boosts your metabolism to help you lose unwanted pounds. CHERRIES: Help you rest and recover. Sleep is a huge part of making any diet and exercise plan work, as it allows your body to process and recover from all the sweat and breakdown of muscle. Cherries act as a natural sleep aid, thanks to their content of melatonin, a hormone that helps control your sleep cycle. TURMERIC: It decreases both inflammation and reliance on bloat-inducing salt. WALNUTS: They are the perfect snack because they are full of healthy fats that will keep you satiated until your next meal.

LOCAL PEOPLE, LOCAL LIVES Name : Neil Harris Job: Owner of Bug Vinyl - The new Vinyl Record shop on Ladygate Beverley. What do you do in your spare time? I’m a keen cyclist in my spare time (we are spoilt in East Yorkshire as there are so many scenic routes to ride just minutes from Beverley) that is if I’m not working on keeping the shop stocked up. How would you describe Beverley to a visitor? Beverley is a historic town that will never cease to surprise. What do you like most about Beverley? Beverley has a lot to like, but I’d split my answer by winter and summer, a winters night in “Nellies” will take some beating and in the summer the Westwood and surrounding villages make for a great bike ride. If you could have dinner with anyone (alive or dead) who would it be and why? My dinner guest would be Mr Neil Armstrong the first man on the moon. Man went to the moon in a rocket with less computing power than a modern iPhone - incredible ! What is your favourite food? My favourite meal is a really good quality home made burger. When did you last go to the cinema and what did you see? I saw Baby Driver - Mainly for the the soundtrack - check it out if you haven’t seen the film.

Briefly explain your working day and what your job entails? Most days are spent at the shop ensuring that we have ordered all the new releases, back catalogue and making sure the shop is as full as possible. We are expanding to start selling Record Decks and our upper floor is a 18th Century room that we cant wait to show off. What do you love most about your job? I get to open large boxes of brand new vinyl everyday - I have managed to turn a passion in to a job. Where do you see yourself in 10 year’s time? If we could open at least one more shop and they both be successful i’d be happy. www.bugvinyl.co.uk Facebook: bugvinylrecords

Solutions for last month

Gardening What to do this month:

Deadhead self-seeders If you want to keep them in check, give plants a tidy now Try and get to your self-seeding plants before they end up sprouting all over the place. If you deadhead many of your gone-over plants now they can’t then take it upon themselves to populate your borders with sneaky little seedlings. Of course, this depends on whether you actually want many of them to naturally fling themselves about to take some of the work out of planting new things. It’s personal preference but sometimes we just need to exercise a little control. If you’ve noticed some sneaking in already, before you start hoeing off weeds pluck out the perennial and biennial self-sown seedlings you don’t want. The offspring of foxgloves, lupins, aquilegia and Canterbury bells will grow and mature this summer, ready to flower next year. But if you’re happy to leave them be, carefully hoe around the seedlings and nip out any close-growing weeds with your fingers. You could actually move them to a different spot or help spread them around the garden by digging them up and growing them on in pots of compost, placed in a sheltered spot outside and watered regularly.

Mulch pots and borders It helps to conserve moisture levels and looks good, too British summer weather can be sporadic at best, but depending on where you live what tends to happen is that, among the squalls of showers – and perhaps a twoday long wet patch – sits days and days, and sometimes a even weeks of dryness.

That’s certainly been the pattern this year – one minute plants are absolutely gasping for a drink and the next they’re deluged. However, what’s important to plants is a consistent moisture level – not too wet or too dry – and there are ways we can control this. Mulching is one of the gardener’s key tools to help maintain the correct environment for all their plants. Summer mulching is most useful as a moisture retainer, keeping plants happy in scorching spells, but there are so many uses that serve as side benefits. They’re decorative for starters, and bark or gravel mulches neaten up borders no end, just when you want to show them off. And the horticultural bonuses are plenty, too. They stop weeds from poking through, some provide nutrients of varying levels, and when the time comes in a just few months, they can also be good at insulating roots against the cold.

Cut lavender for drying Harvesting lavender for drying is a great way to keep bushes neat and compact, while benefiting from the beautifully-scented flower stalks. Cut the flowers just as they mature, when they are at their most fragrant. The best time is late morning – after the dew has dried but before the sun draws out the essential oils. Use scissors or snips and cut at the base of the stems. Tie eight to 10 stems into a bunch with twine and hang upside down in a cool, dark, dry place in your home. Use the dried stems in flower arrangements or strip off the dried buds tomake sachets. You can also store them in an airtight jar to decorate or flavour cakes.

Grow your own NIGEL HOLMES REVEALS THE FIVE SUPERFOODS YOU CAN HARVEST IN YOUR OWN GARDEN WITH YOUR CHILDREN Summer is a perfect time to reconnect with nature and introduce your children to the joys of gardening. And what could be better than growing plants that are packed with nutrients?

Many so-called superfoods, revered for their superior health benefits, are surprisingly easy to grow at home. Children are natural gardeners. Not only does it combine their love of messy play, it also feeds their innate curiosity about the world. What’s more, fussy eaters are far more likely to try a food if they’ve helped to nurture and pick it themselves. There is something magical about sharing a child’s sense of wonder as they witness a seed grow into something tasty to eat. You don’t need a large garden, or a degree in horticulture to get started; just a patch of soil or a few containers, and some seeds. But if you don’t know your pea seeds from your parsnips, knowing where to start can be a challenge. So here are five

BeverleyMag August 2017

foods which are simple to grow, and (almost!) guaranteed to ensure your child devours the fruits of your labour come harvest time.

Blueberries

Most children will polish off a bowl of blueberries faster than you can pick them. A powerhouse of antioxidants, these super fruits also make attractive patio plants. Blueberries thrive in acidic soil, so are grown in containers filled with ericaceous (acidic) compost. It’s worth buying a couple of different varieties as this will encourage crosspollination and heavier crops. Keep the soil moist using rainwater if possible to maintain the pH balance, and prune in late February once the plant is a couple of years old, to remove the old wood. Your only challenge is likely to be persuading your little helper to save some fruit for you.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are packed with the potent antioxidant, lycopene, which gives them their distinctive red colour and helps mop up free radicals that can harm our cells. Home grown tomatoes taste so much better than shop-bought ones. For pots or hanging baskets, try bush or tumbling varieties such as Tumbling Tom, Garden Pearl or Tumbler. To grow from seed, simply scatter a few seeds into pots of compost in March or April, then place on a sunny windowsill. Wait until June before planting outside in a warm, sheltered spot, or in growbags or containers.

Water little and often, and enjoy fresh from the vine and warm from the sun – perfect!

Pumpkin

This Halloween favourite is a great source of vitamin A (essential for eye health) and beta-carotene. The large seeds are easy for little fingers to handle and can be planted indoors in pots of compost in April, then transplanted outside in June. If space is an issue, try one of the cute miniature varieties, like Baby Bear or Jack Be Little. Water regularly until the fruits are

Gardening ready to harvest in October and when you’ve finished carving, the nutritious flesh is great in soups, curries and cakes. And don’t forget the seeds, which are full of protein, magnesium, potassium and zinc.

Kale

This once humble member of the brassica family has enjoyed a surge in popularity of late, since being made the patron saint of vegetables. Fortunately, it’s also incredibly easy to grow and tolerant of bad weather. Sow seeds directly outdoors between March and August. Once the seedlings emerge, it’s a good idea to cover them with nets to keep birds and butterflies away. Then simply pick the leaves when they are young and tender.

And for a snack that even vegetable-phobic children are likely to enjoy, try making kale crisps. Tear the kale into small pieces, then toss in a little oil and salt, or another seasoning like paprika if you prefer. Then roast in the oven at 200°C for five minutes. The results are delicious!

Beetroot

Beetroot is a good source of iron, naturally occurring folic acid and antioxidants. It’s also exceptionally easy to grow and doesn’t even require much watering. Sow the seeds outdoors from February onwards, in the ground or in containers. Once the roots are the size of golf balls, simply pull them up and boil or roast whole with their skins on. Or grate the flesh into brownies or chocolate cake. Song Thrushes are too nervous to use a busy bird table, so put out food at ground level. Feed shop-bought softbill mix, cheese scraps, fat and other food waste. Windfall apples are a favourite in winter. Thrushes will also eat dried fruit (it’s best to soak it first). Dry summer days make worms hard to come by, so that’s when supplementary feeding could be a real life-saver.

I should cocoa!

Health & Beauty

We do like to be the bearers of good news, so if you want to hear about one of the best ways to rejuvenate your skin, read on…

The list of ways to replenish the skin is long, and the last thing one would expect to see on it is chocolate! However, unprocessed dark chocolate is high in antioxidants and flavonols and a little in its purest form may be a good remedy for lines and tired skin. The cacao (or cocoa) tree is native to the Americas and the cacao bean is a dried and fully fermented seed which, although strong and bitter to the taste, is a good source of antioxidants and flavonols and the basis for chocolate. The results of previous clinical trials that investigated the effects of oral consumption of high-flavonol cocoa products on skin photo-aging (damage to the epidermis caused by UV radiation) have been contradictory. However, a new study by the Department of Agricultural Biotechnology at Seoul National University in South Korea suggests that cacao extract does offer protection against photo-aging. The consumption of dietary antioxidants in general is important for the maintenance of skin health. As the largest organ in the body, the skin provides the defensive barrier against light, heat, infection and injury.

It also regulates the body’s temperature, lipid stores and water. To keep the skin in optimum condition, good nutritional is a prime factor. Unprocessed dark chocolate is a good source of antioxidants and flavonols and particularly in raw Cacao beans, due to the phytonutrients in cacao nibs. Antioxidants help to absorb free radicals, which are unbalanced compounds created by cellular processes that cause damage in the body.

Flavonols are said to reduce the risk of cancer; promote heart health; lower blood pressure; and reduce the ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol. Unfortunately, the chocolate that most of us eat has been alkalised, fermented and roasted with much added milk and sugar, which destroys flavonols. Remember that all chocolate was not created equal, and the chocolate containing the most antioxidants and least sugar is minimally-processed dark chocolate with at least 80% cocoa content. Dark chocolate is also rich in fibre and so you’ll eat less! For a great smoothie, try cacao nibs, banana, peanut butter, raw honey, a small amount of cinnamon, ice and either coconut or almond milk. HEALTH TIPS

PRACTISE YOGA AND MEDITATE

Brand new research has found that mind-body interventions such as meditation, yoga and tai chi don’t just relax us, they can ‘reverse’ the molecular reactions in our DNA which cause ill health and depression, according to a study by the universities of Coventry and Radboud. We’ll say namaste to that!

BOIL YOUR WATER

It might sound counterintuitive to heat up your drink when the reason you’re sipping it is to cool down, but if you are one of those people who have dry skin and an unquenchable thirst, do as the ancient sages did and look to Ayurveda for help. This Indian medicine system recommends boiling water before you drink it to enrich it, to overcome weak digestive fire (agni) and to clear metabolic residues which may interfere with water’s absorption. We’re fans of this form of water consumption at Beverley Mag.

New Zealand

The Land of the Long White Cloud… part 2 Landing at Christ Church on the South Island for the start of my Southern Adventure. Here we had an early morning start to experience the Tranz Scenic train journey from Christ Church to Arthurs Pass. This spectacular train ride takes you through farmland, plains, gorges & river valleys before crossing the magnificent Southern Alps within Arthurs Pass National Park. The scenes are ever changing & there is a viewing platform for you to take photographs from along the way. From here I was picked up by coach and taken to Franz Joseph. I was hoping to experience a helicopter ride to see the glacier from here but unfortunately as the weather is unpredictable it wasn’t meant to be. The journey to Queenstown is one of the most spectacular I have ever experienced. Travelling through Haast past & Haast Valley over the dramatic Southern Alps was amazing. The scenery here is just absolutely stunning & I could never tire from seeing the magnificent views all around me. Queenstown itself offers amazing sightseeing options along with shopping, dining & thrills for the adventure seeker. Here I enjoyed the amazing Shotover jet boat ride. Twisting & turning through narrow canyons at breath taking speed was so much fun. If this isn’t enough the World famous full 360 degree spin will have you shouting for more. It is very easy to walk around this lovely town with its beautiful lake, offering activities by boat or dining with a view, to the Skyline Gondola allowing you to take in spectacular 220 degree panoramic views of this stunning place. You can even enjoy a dining experience up here that has an amazing array of buffet food options that certainly did not disappoint. To say that I enjoyed my experience is an understatement. Upon returning home I was just wanting to plan a return trip to take in more of this stunning cultural country. We have put together many itineraries for clients both on a self-drive option & touring. I found that being looked after & driven around to all the sites allowed me to take in the natural scenery very easily. Why not join me next year on a 19 day New Zealand getaway taking in both islands & including many sights along with some free time to explore at your leisure.

Flemingate Ladies’ Day

Grab Your Hats it’s Ladies’ Day

Flemingate and Beverley Racecourse in new three year partnership Beverley Racecourse are preparing for the social event of the summer, Ladies’ Day; presented in partnership with Flemingate Shopping Centre. Get set for one of the best afternoons you’ll spend with your friends this summer, as they bring you the brand new Flemingate Ladies’ Day. From the laid back, toes-inthe-grass fun of a picnic in the Course Enclosure to the glamour and vibrancy of the Premier Enclosure, there’s no other day quite like this. The atmosphere, excitement and laughter will leave you with memories to last a lifetime. Expect live music and an afterparty show from the Lovettes, a new Most Stylish Lady

competition open to everyone, and a gorgeous pampering marquee. ‘Ladies Days’ are used at most of the larger racing events, but the concept is thought to have originated at Ascot. Traditionally on Ladies Day, women were offered free-entry or discounted tickets for events that would ordinarily be for men only. East Yorkshire’s most glamorous event of the summer launched in spectacular style with the unveiling of a promotional film encapsulating the grace and power of the equine stars of Ladies’ Day at Beverley Racecourse.

stand out from the crowd. The racecourse released the evocative video promoting a new three-year partnership with Flemingate, Beverley’s fastgrowing retail and leisure destination. Filmed at dawn before the Flemingate centre becomes a bustling hub of activity, the video follows four magnificent horses as they canter through the centre’s main thoroughfare, past its highquality retail and dining outlets.

The four-legged stars of the film were under the expert guidance of horse Ladies’ Day is the trainer and stunt social highlight rider Ben Atkinson, of of the racing Goole-based Atkinson calendar at Action Horses. as Poldark, Peaky Blinders and Jamaica Inn, and has worked with the racecourse on a number of projects over the years. Sally Iggulden, Chief Executive at Beverley Racecourse, said: “We’re thrilled to team up with Flemingate to bring the focus of Ladies’ Day back to Beverley and we thought this film would be a wonderful way to promote the partnership. “You don’t expect to see horses running free in a shopping centre, which is why the film is so striking and different. The horses are always the centre of attention at Beverley – even on Flemingate Ladies’ Day, when they share the limelight with racegoers in all their

Flemingate Ladies’ Day finery – and the film reflects that. “It also places the equine stars in a location that has quickly become part and parcel of Beverley, as demonstrated by Flemingate’s support for Ladies’ Day. “It’s an unusual way to promote Ladies’ Day, but perfect in view of our exciting partnership with Flemingate.” Ben Atkinson, who is the riding double for Aiden Turner, who plays the title character in Poldark, alongside Beverley’s own glamorous rising star Eleanor Tomlinson, said: “Working with the team at Beverley Racecourse has enabled Atkinson Action Horses to be a part of some incredible projects, from tuxedo Cossacks to riding stallions through shopping centres.” The film features Atkinson Action Horses trainer and stunt rider Katherine Pickering, who is seen leading the horses

through Flemingate, exuding the beauty and glamour of Ladies’ Day. Tickets are selling fast and racegoers are urged to book in advance, either online at www. beverley-racecourse.co.uk or by calling 01482 867488. Gates open at 11.30am on Wednesday, August 16. The first race is at 2.10pm and last race currently at 5.15pm.

Q for quality with a high five Nic Gough drives the fashionable and family-friendly Audi Q5 When Audi offered Beverely Mag the stylish new Audi Q5 for the weekend, I jumped at the chance to try out the company’s best-selling car. The Q5 has always been the perfect all-rounder: a practical, classy, perfectly finished 4x4 that appeals to both families and the fashion conscious. Audi has its road to success all figured out with a stream of evolutionary new models building on their predecessors’ popularity by bringing something new to the party to keep them fresh in fiercely-competitive premium markets. The Q5, Audi’s world best-selling SUV with 1.6 million sales since launched in 2008, is a classic example of Audi evolving and improving. They have really raised the bar with their allnew Q5 sport utility vehicle and taken it to new levels of desirability and driveability. Space and comfort The new Q5 has an elegant modern body, and is bigger on the outside, which makes for an even roomier interior, boasting that exquisitely tasteful, top-notch feel of quality that we have come to expect from Audi. In the front, the Q5 feels impressively spacious and has plenty of storage space for phones, keys and bottles. The front leather seats are extremely comfortable, with lots of

quiet inside with sound-proofing measures including an acoustic windscreen and thick glazing. Audi only offers the Q5 with an automatic gearbox. The sevenspeed unit fitted to 2.0-litre models is ultra-smooth and very easy to use. Audi’s quattro allwheel-drive system is standard, making it easy to drive in all weathers. All models also come with front and rear parking sensors, which is a real bonus as it is quite difficult to judge where the rear of the vehicle ends. Final say With an Audi, you always know what you are getting; quality, drivability and the superb way it feels on the road. The Q5 is an incredibly quiet and refined car in which to travel. It’s also very desirable so you’ll enjoy living with it, especially knowing it will hold its value well. Model Matters adjustment to help find a good driving position. There’s loads of head and legroom in the back, and the 550-litre boot is now slightly bigger. More than enough space to fit not just one, but two cricket bags, and a very large coolbox, as my family headed off for the weekly Saturday cricket match! The boot space can be extended by folding the 40/20/40 rear seats, although they don’t lie completely flat. At the wheel The dashboard is beautifully finished and easy to operate. Clear logical instruments and most functions operated through the intuitive MMI

controller, (which means that you don’t get messy fingerprints on the screen) make it extremely user-friendly and the new Q5 also sees more accessible connectivity and smart phone integration. If you choose the technology pack it’s worth paying £250 more for the 12.3in virtual cockpit to be able to view the instrument display dominated by the sat-nav map. How it drives The Q5 has made great strides when it comes to ride and road holding. Air suspension, filtering down from the bigger Q7 is now available for the ultimate in ride quality. It is also remarkably

The Last Word

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT

By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

SIMPLE WAY TO SAVE MONEY ON DAY TRIPS

It’s always a juggling act, trying to keep the children entertained over the summer holidays, especially when you’re a working parent. This year we’ve got a list of things we’d like to do and are adding them to our 6-week planner - days out, trips to the cinema or days with friends. A friend of mine, though, gave me a great bit of advice. At the beginning of any school holiday, she fills her cooler with drinks and snacks just in case they get stuck in a traffic jam or delayed some other way. It also means you’re not constantly forking out extra cash when you’re on a day out, because days out can end up pretty costly if you’re not careful. Simple, yet effective – and it’s what I’m doing this year. You should also book entry tickets online beforehand because there’s usually a discount. So, whatever you’re doing and wherever you’re going, have a great time – and stay safe!

THERE’S JUST SOMETHING ABOUT A VW!

I don’t know what it is but there is just something about a VW. I’ve had a Golf and a Bora but sadly never a Beetle. I also love the vintage camper vans! But you don’t have to own one to enjoy the VW Festival coming up at Harewood House in Leeds 11th-13th August. It was set up and is still run by 2 Hull lads (well, men now!) who are total VW enthusiasts – and this year they’re expecting to beat last year’s 21,000 visitors. It’s one of the biggest annual events in Yorkshire and is centred around fun for the whole family, even the dog. I can wholeheartedly recommend it! So if you’re free that weekend, go to vwfestival.co.uk for more information and to book your tickets (and camping space if required.) You’ll be in for a treat too – this year’s theme is “Movies”, so they’re having a cinema-style tent with car-related movies showing throughout the entire time. They’ve really thought of everything.

WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY?

We all go through life worrying from one day to the next, thinking about all the things we haven’t done yet and the long “To do” list which never seems to end! Am I right? Unfortunately, we also rarely take the opportunity to enjoy today and be thankful for all the good things we have right now. We tend to dwell on the future and forget to live in the present. So when I get stressed out at the moment, I try to think about what’s really important in my life – my family, friends, good health, happiness, having a roof over my head and not having to worry if I have food on the table or clean water to drink. I might also add being able to hang out my washing on the line because it smells nicer and going to sleep in freshly laundered sheets (the first night is always the best!). Now that last bit may sound a bit weird, but I’m not proud and I know you feel the same way! My point is that we are all incredibly lucky in so many small and different ways and we just need to remember that every now and then!
