Built by Industry, for Industry: The New Standard in Manufacturing Education
A modern challenge has emerged in the manufacturing industry: a skills gap where new applicants often lack the foundational knowledge and soft skills necessary to build a reliable workforce. Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) is bridging this gap through the new Career Pathway Certificate (CPC): Core Manufacturing Skills, a program built by the front lines, for the front lines.
Unlike a standard academic track, this CPC—a short-term, specialized training program designed to fast-track students into high-demand careers—came to life through insights from the Manufacturing Alliance, a powerful partnership of over 40 employers designed to identify and address local and regional workforce challenges.
“Employers are on the front lines of industry and know best which job skills are important and which skills are out-of-date. Together
as a group, they share current and future workforce needs,” explained Director of Open Enrollment and Career Pathway Certificates, Kyra Bellrichard.
The Alliance defined the non-negotiable skills required for success in the industry today and identified that while technical mastery is vital, true hiring differentiators are found in the soft skills, such as a safety mindset, reliability and clear communication.
These industry-vetted priorities were mapped directly into the Core Manufacturing Skills CPC curriculum to ensure every graduate meets the expectations of regional manufacturers.
“Students are learning skills that regional employers have specifically identified as necessary for success, rather than broad or theoretical content,” said Erin Powers-Daley, executive director of workforce and programming
initiatives. “Because the certificate was shaped and sponsored by local employers, students complete the program with skills that are immediately transferable into regional jobs, giving them an advantage over candidates who have completed more generalized training without direct employer alignment.”
By aligning the College’s expertise with the Alliance’s real-world needs, NICC has created a fasttrack that provides students with immediate employer recognition and gives businesses a pipeline of workers ready to contribute on day one.

THE FINANCIAL ENGINE: 260 Job Training Programs
While NICC is known for its high-quality instruction, it also plays a key role in the region’s economic development through the State of Iowa’s 260 Job Training programs.
State-sponsored 260E and 260F programs serve as a versatile financial engine designed to offset the costs of workforce development. These resources are available to any qualifying business in the NICC district looking to expand its team or elevate the skills of its current workforce, respectively.
By leveraging these state-funded initiatives, NICC acts as a strategic partner to regional industry to ensure that our local businesses have the capital and the expertise needed to grow, innovate and thrive.
“The grant programs that NICC administers are second to none. Without it, I don’t think we could’ve achieved what we have to add over 80 new jobs in a four-year period.”

Local Excellence National Recognition: Amy Lasack Named a Top 20 Educator
Nationwide innovation begins right here at Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC), as Vice President of Business and Community Solutions Amy Lasack has been named a Top 20 Continuing Educator in the nation for 2026 by Learning Resources Network (LERN), a national organization dedicated to supporting community and continuing education.
Out of more than 2,000 practitioners considered, Lasack was recognized for her work in deepening relationships with regional employers to create collaborative opportunities for growth and innovation.
“Ms. Lasack is on the cutting edge of our field and is making a significant contribution to the field,” noted William A. Draves, CPP, CAE, President of LERN, in the LERN News press release.
Lasack has spent nearly 25 years working within Iowa’s community college system, bringing broad experience in workforce development, education leadership and business collaboration. She believes the workforce is an ecosystem and that education works best when it adapts to learners and employers alike.
“Community colleges sit at the intersection of education, workforce and community. My philosophy has evolved toward making learning shorter, more flexible and directly tied to real workplace needs where employers, community organizations and NICC work together. That kind of shared ownership is where real impact happens,” Lasack said.
This prestigious recognition places Lasack among the elite leaders in North American workforce development, yet her focus remains on the economic health of northeast Iowa: “The goal is the same: learning that keeps pace with change and helps businesses stay competitive without pulling people away from their jobs,” said Lasack.
By aligning national best practices with local expertise, Amy Lasack ensures that northeast Iowa isn't just keeping up with the modern economy—it’s leading it. LEARN MORE ABOUT
A Full Circle Journey: From First Steps to Guiding Others
Sometimes the paths we choose don’t lead where we expect—but they often lead exactly where we’re meant to be.
Jomarie Lund’s journey began with one small step. Enrolling in a high school Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) course was originally just a way to earn money for her first car—little did she know how integral the program would remain in her life.
While working as a CNA, Jomarie earned her nursing degree through Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC), graduating debt-free. She advanced into leadership roles across long-term care and hospital settings yet felt continuously drawn back to the CNA role she loved.
“The CNA program was exceptional, offering hands-on training and knowledgeable instructors who truly care about student success. I feel thoroughly prepared to provide care for residents, and I look forward to continuing to improve my skills and confidence. I highly recommend the Northeast Iowa Community College CNA program to anyone looking to start a rewarding healthcare career!”
Norah Peyton Certified Nurse Aid Graduate
While working in long-term care, Jomarie faced an unexpected cancer diagnosis that forced her to step away from work—but it didn’t stop her. Upon returning to work, she accepted a part-time CNA instructor role at NICC.
“It was what I wanted from the beginning,” she said. “When something comes to you like that, it’s a sign.”
Today, as a CNA Coordinator at the College, Jomarie works closely with the State of Iowa, regional healthcare facilities and instructors to maintain program quality, compliance and workforce alignment. She also supports students directly, helping them navigate next steps and discover where they fit in healthcare. She feels the CNA program is the perfect place to start.
Since Jomarie was a student, the CNA program has evolved to include high school concurrent enrollment and online and hybrid formats, often completed in just two months as a Career Pathway Certificate.
“The CNA course helped me find my path,” Jomarie reflected. “Staying with NICC now is like coming full circle. I hope I am making a difference for students like my instructors did for me.”
Despite a path of adversity, Jomarie is grateful for where she is today. Living near Waukon with her family and deeply connected to the community she serves, she now helps local students build meaningful careers— strengthening healthcare across the region.

Back on the Road: Turning Job Loss into New Opportunity
After six years of employment as a route delivery driver at Schwan’s (Yelloh), Casey Smith lost his job when the company closed nationwide. Facing uncertainty, he quickly contacted Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) regarding the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) program to help him find employment.
His biggest concern was maintaining a steady income, so he explored available resources right away. Within days, he visited the Decorah American Job Center, where a Title I Workforce Consultant helped him set goals, complete paperwork and access funding. Casey received Title I support to cover his transportation, CDL permit, CDL license and DOT physical, and he was eligible for State of Iowa GAP tuition assistance to offset training costs.
“The funding pushed me over the edge and I went for it—if I had to get a loan for this, I might not have done it!” Casey said.

Living near Decorah, Casey appreciated being able to attend classes in nearby Waukon. The College’s competency-based CDL course allowed him to progress quickly as he mastered key driving skills. He completed the four-week program in just three weeks and passed all exams on his first attempt.
Before finishing the program, Casey found employment with Goette Farms, where he now drives a route truck and earns a strong wage. His journey highlights how determination, accessible training and coordinated regional support help residents stay, work and thrive close to home.
Casey encourages others facing job loss to act quickly and use local resources. “Don’t take a break. Get right into it—otherwise it might seem overwhelming,” he advised.

Homegrown Healthcare: How NICC is Filling the Regional Gap
Walk into any hospital or job site across northeast Iowa, and you’ll likely find a Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) graduate serving as the backbone of our local economy.
By fostering deep-rooted partnerships with local employers and responding to the urgent needs of the workforce, the College ensures that students are not only prepared for careers but also filling high-demand roles that keep our communities healthy and thriving.
Meeting the Call for Healthcare Professionals
The demand for skilled healthcare workers across northeast Iowa has never been more pressing. In response, the College has strategically expanded its healthcare programs to bridge the gap between education and clinical necessity.
A primary example of this growth is the Radiologic Technology program. Recognizing a critical shortage in the field, NICC recently increased its enrollment capacity from 16 to 30 students. This expansion was made possible through significant investments in two new on-campus X-ray simulation units and the development of more classroom facilities at the Peosta campus.
To ensure students receive diverse, hands-on experience, the College also increased its clinical placement sites to include locations such as Manchester, Cresco, Waukon, Decorah, Cedar Rapids and even the Quad Cities. This regional reach allows students to train in various healthcare environments, making them “ready for the real world” upon graduation.

Bringing Training Directly to the Community
The College’s impact is also felt through innovative partnerships with local school districts. In a transformative move for the New Hampton area, NICC and New Hampton High School partnered to create a fully functional health lab within the high school.
Previously, students interested in becoming a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) faced a significant hurdle: a long commute to a College campus for training. Now, these students can master personal care skills and learn vital communication techniques in a realistic clinical setting—complete with hospital beds and manikins—without leaving their home district.
“By completing this training, they truly become healthcare professionals,” said Jomarie Lund, NICC CNA coordinator.
This initiative not only supports students' professional growth but also builds a direct pipeline of skilled workers for local health care facilities.
Building for the Future: Expanding in Dubuque
The momentum continues this month as we break ground on a significant expansion of health care training at the NICC Dubuque Center. This project is a direct investment in the future of regional emergency services and specialized care.
Once complete, the expanded wing will serve as a premier hub for Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Paramedic training, providing a localized solution for the critical shortage of first responders. The facility will feature state-of-the-art simulation labs designed to mimic high-pressure clinical and field environments. Beyond emergency services, the expansion will also support advanced short-term certificate programs in Phlebotomy and CNA allowing students to fast-track their entry into the workforce.
These investments ensure that as our region grows, our capacity to care for its citizens grows with it. By staying ahead of industry demands, NICC remains a dedicated partner in both the professional success of our students and the long-term vitality of the communities we serve.

The Real Skills Revolution: How Soft Skills Make an Impact
The professional landscape has shifted. While technical mastery once defined a successful career, employers today are looking for something more—they’re looking for real skills.
Often referenced as “soft skills,” these real skills are essential non-technical and personal attributes, such as communication, adaptability, problem-solving and emotional intelligence, that translate across responsibilities and industries. While technical skills help you land a job, real skills help you keep it.
Erin Shaw, Ph.D., strategic planning program manager at Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC), prefers to call them “real skills,” a concept first popularized by author Seth Godin, to represent their challenging and urgent nature.

“Real skills aren’t easy at all. They’re hard to do, and they require practice and attention,” Shaw said.
Real skills aren’t just “nice-to-have” traits. In modern industry, they also serve as riskmanagement tools. A technician who hears instructions without actively listening can create a misunderstanding that can cost thousands of dollars in materials and labor.
This explains why employers are shifting their focus to hiring candidates with a strong combination of technical competency and real skills. They aren't just looking for someone who can operate a machine or read a chart; they need professionals who can communicate effectively when that machine breaks down or problem-solve through a complex patient case.
“Emotional intelligence and navigating change were a game-changer for me. I gained fresh ways of thinking and a broader perspective to make learning even more impactful,” said a Dupaco representative and Business Consortium participant.
Because these skills are vital to workforce success, they can’t be left to chance. To ensure mastery, Shaw emphasizes they must be developed through “doing the reps and sets”—consistent, intentional practicing until the skills become second nature.
“Real skills matter and they’re learnable,” Shaw said. “ Whether you’re a leader, a teammate or just someone trying to make work better, real skills are the foundation. Start small. Pick one thing like listening without interrupting and practice it daily. You’ll feel the difference, and so will everyone around you.”
BUILD “REAL SKILLS” THAT MOVE YOUR CAREER FORWARD.
