Soft Skills in the Workplace

Technical skills and subject-specific knowledge are required for many jobs but can only take a person so far. Soft skills are essential for all members of the workforce, in all types of organizations, across all levels of employment. While important in all areas of life, these vital attributes can still be hard to define.

Jennie Brown, HR, Medical Associates, shares her definition, stating: "Soft skills, such as communication, empathy and adaptability, are critical in fostering effective collaboration, building trust and creating a strong teamwork environment. The ability to listen actively, manage conflict constructively and adjust your communication style is essential for fostering teamwork, offering great customer service and achieving organizational goals."

Liz Kass, HR, ProPulse, explains, "Soft skills are your personal attributes that are a must for people to work well with others and be successful in their careers at ProPulse! Soft skills have become a necessity again in the workplace!”

Although soft skills can be considered personality traits, they cannot be assumed; and proper training can enhance these abilities. Kendall Hunt is one of multiple companies that regularly utilize training opportunities at Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) to grow their talent pipeline.

“The monthly leadership training developed by NICC has transformed how our management team approaches their roles. This comprehensive program doesn't just teach theory; it provides practical, actionable strategies that our leaders can implement immediately. From mastering crucial HR practices to building stronger connections through regular one-on-one meetings, the training has equipped our team with the tools they need to lead effectively and create an environment where employees want to stay and grow,” expressed Stacie Halverson, HR, Kendall Hunt Publishing.

NICC offers in-depth, customized training tailored to the needs of individual employers. The College recently held free monthly webinars showcasing instructors and highlighting soft skills topics. These webinar recordings are available to view anytime at youtube.com/neiowacc.
