Sustainable Leadership: Executive Coaching Helps Leaders of All Levels
Callie FitzGerald, founder, CEO and teacher at Centrally Rooted, knows better than anyone: when an organization grows, the people inside it must evolve too.
As Centrally Rooted, a Dubuque-based nonprofit, experienced substantial growth, Callie saw an opportunity.
She understood that to achieve Centrally Rooted's mission to support positive brain health in creative ways, her leadership toolkit needed to expand.
Callie turned to Executive Coaching at Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC), a powerful, accessible resource for professionals of all levels.
The NICC executive leadership approach is holistic, focusing on how leaders show up “mind, body and soul.” It’s a safe, confidential space to ask tough questions and address the blind spots that hold us back from our next promotion or career pivot.
“I deeply value human-centered leadership, so I wanted to ensure the growth of Centrally Rooted did not come at the expense of connection, trust or communication,” Callie said.
Through personalized, one-on-one sessions, Callie worked with Business and Community Solutions instructor Michael Leytem to translate complex leadership theory into the practical, daily habits her team needed.
These convenient, face-to-face coaching sessions provided the specific support Callie needed to navigate rapid growth without losing sight of the heart of her organization.
“Working with Michael helped give language and frameworks to experiences and dynamics I was already sensing intuitively,” Callie said. “Seeing concepts visually represented through organizational psychology models, trust frameworks and leadership structures helped me become more thoughtful and intentional in the way I lead.”
Today, the training continues to impact her approach to sustainable leadership.
“I now think much more frequently about the bigger picture of the organization and how leadership structure intersects with both organizational health and my own nervous system sustainability,” Callie said. “Investing intentional time into leadership development dramatically impacts the
efficiency, clarity and intentionality of the kind of leader you become.”
Whether you are navigating rapid organizational change or preparing for your next career pivot, NICC Executive Coaching offers personalized, one-on-one development tailored to your schedule. Sessions are highly affordable, last one hour and are available in person or virtually.

Crafting a Career by Hand
One class sparked a passion. The next expanded it.
After completing Northeast Iowa Community College's Building Construction & Construction Equipment Operator program, Isaac Anderson wanted to learn more. That curiosity led him to enroll in Cabinet & Trim Carpentry Basics, broadening his skills and opening the door to new career possibilities.
What began as a construction course became a journey through the skilled trades—one driven by a desire to keep learning and growing.
“What got me into cabinetry is taking the construction course,” Anderson said. “I saw how cool it was and all the fun things I learned about construction that I never knew beforehand.”
Now, Anderson sees the world through the eyes of a skilled craftsman. When walking into a house, he catches himself analyzing the quality of the trim, flooring and structural details. During his cabinetry class, he even mastered advanced joinery using a domino machine to build a nightstand without a single screw or nail. He is already applying his handson skills outside the classroom by painting trim, planning a summer deck project and building a custom doghouse.
“The partnership between NICC and Four Mounds Foundation provides students like Isaac with meaningful hands-on learning experiences that prepare them for success long after graduation,” said Trades and Industry Program Developer Tony Ries. “I couldn’t be more proud of our students and the dedicated instructors who support them every step of the way. Seeing our students grow, build confidence and develop their skills is incredibly rewarding.”
The confidence he built learning new skills in the trades even helped Anderson land a new job doing masonry work at Gronen, a Dubuque real estate developer. He credits NICC with giving him the foundation to succeed.
"You can never learn too much," Anderson said. “I’m ready to take on the challenge.” EXPLORE CARPENTRY & CONSTRUCTION CLASSES. BUILD YOUR FUTURE. REGISTER

A Legacy of Connecting Local Needs to Lifelong Opportunity
For sixty years, the continuing education division at Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) has responded to the needs of our communities by connecting businesses and individuals with education and training opportunities.
When the College was established in 1966, continuing education looked different than it does today. Programs reflected community needs and available delivery methods of the era, with several core program areas continuing to evolve over time.
Early adult education offerings included health classes, cake decorating, pottery and GED test preparation classes through partnerships with local school districts. Agriculture programming was added in the early 1980s as farmers sought education in grain markets, dairy breeding and recordkeeping. During those years, community colleges also served as the sole providers of mandatory certification and recertification training for industries such as real estate, insurance, welding and cosmetology.
Grant funding helped launch initiatives ranging from consumer education to adult re-entry programs
supporting displaced homemakers and others entering the workforce. In the 1980s, continuing education expanded into customized workforce training supported by newly established Iowa Industrial New Jobs Training (260E) funding, creating long-term partnerships with local employers. TriMark Corporation was one of the first companies to utilize the program, and the company continues to partner with NICC today.
“One of the key strategic advantages supporting TriMark’s continued success has been our long-standing partnership with NICC,” stated Lynn Hopp, senior vice president of TriMark. “NICC’s responsiveness to our needs and commitment to workforce excellence have provided tremendous value to the company. TriMark could not have achieved the level of growth and success we have experienced since 1984 without the partnership, support and opportunities provided through NICC.”
NICC Business and Community Solutions. While the tools and technologies have advanced, the College’s role as a connector remains stronger than ever—helping individuals, businesses and communities adapt, grow and succeed.

From CNA to Phlebotomy: A Journey of Connection and Care
One conversation changed the course of Eunice Tellez's healthcare career.
After completing Certified Nursing Assistant training through NICC and spending six months in the workforce, Eunice was looking for her next step. During her state certification testing, a conversation with Kelly Deeney, NICC health program developer, introduced her to phlebotomy—and a new career opportunity.
What began as a desire to care for others soon evolved into a commitment to advancing her healthcare skills.
“When talking with Eunice in that short amount of time, I knew she could achieve her goals,” Deeney said. “She has such a positive attitude and good work ethic.”
Eunice completed her clinical rotations at MercyOne Oelwein Medical Center this past spring, balancing the 120hour program with the demands of being a non-traditional student and mother of two. She credits her success to the unwavering support of her husband and the financial bridge provided by NICC scholarships, which allowed her to complete her education debt-free.
Beyond the technical skills—like mastering the centrifuge to separate plasma—Eunice discovered that phlebotomy is as much about human connection as it is about clinical precision. Her bilingual background and natural empathy allow her to put anxious patients at ease.
"It’s important to read people," she explains. "Some are afraid of needles, and you have to make the time to talk to them so they relax."
With her clinicals completed and her certification exam passed, Eunice is looking toward a bright future. While she is currently pursuing a career as a phlebotomy technician, she eventually hopes to combine her clinical expertise with her language skills to become a medical interpreter.
For Eunice, the support she found at NICC provided more than just a certificate; it gave her the confidence to keep expanding her horizons in healthcare.

Ed Vance, NICC Manchester Center Director, serves as both the program developer and instructor for the program. With nearly 25 years of coaching experience across five sports and multiple age levels, Ed connects with and supports students in meaningful ways throughout their coaching journeys.
Brandon Bries, who recently completed the course, stated, “As someone who has been out of college for 18 years, I found the coaching authorization course to be very user-friendly and easy to navigate. Ed was great every step of the way in answering any questions. All the modules were very straightforward, as were the completion steps.
