Because the faculty and staf met her with radical hospitality, Amy felt right at home, ultimately graduating and launching a successful business. To Dr. Wee, this story is a vital reminder of the institution’s daily responsibility: when a student walks through the door, the College gets exactly one opportunity to show them they belong and that we care about their journey ahead.
Dr. Liang Chee Wee NICC Leader, 2007-2022
Dr. Liang Chee Wee’s enduring impact at Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) is a testament to relationship building, deep empathy and a steadfast belief that “we do life better together.” Originally from Singapore, Dr. Wee arrived in the U.S. in 1983 to pursue higher education, ultimately earning his doctorate at the University of Arizona. In 1992, he accepted a temporary, one-year sabbatical replacement role at Luther College in Decorah. The extraordinary warmth and support of Northeast Iowa captured his heart, turning a brief stay into a 15-year tenure. Seeking a new sector of higher education to learn from, he joined the College in 2007 as the Calmar campus provost and eventually ascended to the presidency. For Dr. Wee, the community college mission is deeply human. He frequently recalls a student named Amy, a single parent who pulled into the NICC parking lot four separate times, turning back each time because she lacked the confdence to walk in. On her ffth attempt,
This philosophy of deep community care defned his leadership. With the unwavering commitment of some Calmar campus colleagues and the huge support of the Larson Construction team and surrounding communities, the College facilitated the building of a new home in just eight days for a student’s family during a project with Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. At the Peosta campus, a public-private partnership involving the City of Peosta, NICC and Merit Development created the College Suites apartment complex, which opened in 2022 to meet housing needs. Years of authentic trust-building and collaborative partnerships also culminated in the historic passage of a $39 million bond levy, garnering an overwhelming 83% voter approval to modernize the Calmar and Peosta campuses. For Dr. Wee, this historic triumph was the product of a culture that prioritizes active listening and views its tools and facilities as shared community assets to achieve common and collective good. Though he is individually receiving the 2026 Outstanding Retiree Service Award, Dr. Wee credits the honor to the collective eforts of the colleagues and neighbors who surrounded him, noting that the College’s success is “because of us.” Today, he channels that same communal spirit into volunteering at the Decorah Food Pantry and the Decorah Rotary Club. Refecting on the dedicated staf who routinely stepped up to help students with everything from food and housing insecurity to vehicle repairs, Dr. Wee shared: “The great thing about NICC faculty and staf is they know support does not end in the classroom. You will never see that in the job description, but it is in the humanity description of how we take care of each other.”

Driven to remain in the medical feld from an analytical, administrative standpoint, she discovered the Health Information Technology (HIT) program at Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC)—a pivotal choice that shaped her entire future. Enrolling in the spring of 1996, Sarah immediately found a home in the tight-knit, in-person environment at NICC. Corinne Cook
Human Services, ‘94 Practical Nursing, ‘05 Associate Degree Nursing, ‘06 Corinne’s path to healthcare education is a powerful reminder that it is never too late to follow a true calling. A multi-program graduate of Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC), Corinne earned a degree in Human Services in 1994, before returning to the College to earn a Practical Nursing degree in 2005 and an Associate Degree in Nursing in 2006. Though initially hesitant to enter nursing as an older student and busy parent, Corinne found that the Calmar campus’s close-to-home location and small, supportive environment at NICC were exactly what she needed to thrive while fnally transitioning to the nursing profession that had been calling to her for so many years. She quickly discovered that her background in human services and her new nursing skills complemented each other perfectly, building a uniquely well-rounded foundation for her career.
After graduation, Corinne secured a role in long-term care before transitioning to Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon in 2007. Working in a smaller community hospital required her to cross-train extensively across med-surg, obstetrics and the emergency department. As a result, she mastered a highly versatile clinical skillset. Her connection to the College came full circle when faculty icon Dr. Pat Martin called her at the hospital, inviting her to return as an educator. Though she had never envisioned herself stepping into a teaching role, the unexpected opportunity quickly turned into a passion, and she soon could not imagine doing anything else. Driven by this new purpose, Corinne was eager to give back to students and lead with the same empathy, expertise and the integrity she learned as a student. She cared for her community for nearly two decades as a registered nurse, seeing patients through the Covid-19 pandemic before her retirement in 2023. Today, Corinne continues to play an essential role as a NICC instructor. She is an invaluable asset, teaching clinicals, labs and lectures across the CNA, LPN and Business and Community Solutions (BCS) programs. When asked what she is proudest of, Corinne doesn’t list degrees or titles; she credits her family and her four children as her biggest supporters through every demanding step of balancing school and home life. She recalls multiple faculty members who made a major impact on her success throughout the years, including advisor Chris Flaskerud and the late Jeanne Africa, who shaped her clinical mindset by teaching her to “think like a nurse.” Refecting on her work at NICC today, Corinne shared: “I always tell my students, if you give 100%, I will give 100%. Seeing them grow from nervous beginners into confdent medical professionals is incredibly rewarding.”

Today, Darren leads with empathy, expertise and the same integrity he frst learned as an NICC student. Outside of work, he gives back as a dedicated mentor to young tradespeople entering commercial construction, helping them navigate the feld and advance their careers. He also remains deeply connected to his community by overseeing major commercial developments at hospitals, public schools, casinos and universities throughout the Dubuque area. Being inducted into the NICC Alumni Hall of Fame is a full-circle moment for Darren. Among his proudest achievements is maintaining and expanding Conlon’s enduring 45-year national corporate partnership with Target — a relationship originally passed down to him by the Conlon family, which he has now successfully passed down to the next generation of leadership. Darren credits the Conlon family — Tim, Steve and the late Mike Conlon — for investing heavily in his development and career path. Above all, he credits his wife of 34 years, Kelly, as his biggest anchor through every step of his journey, and fondly recalls his NICC instructor, Ron Klein, whose calm, solution-oriented demeanor left a lasting impact on his leadership style. Refecting on his work, Darren shares: “We take a lot of pride in our fnished products, and take a lot of pride in what we’re doing — building in the community of Dubuque and the surrounding areas.”

For Pat, the ultimate satisfaction of his career has always been simple: taking something that is broken and making it run again. Transitioning to the classroom taught Pat the valuable lesson of patience. While he initially stepped in and fxed things himself, he quickly realized that students learn best by doing. This hands-on philosophy helped countless students succeed, including a memorable student with a learning disability who defed expectations to become one of his most successful graduates—and a lifelong friend. Throughout his tenure, Pat also leaned on the camaraderie of his colleagues, noting that fellow instructors Ron McAulife and Bob Orr were highly instrumental in helping him grow as an educator.

Diesel Mechanics, ‘82 Pat’s legacy at Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) is built on grit, expertise and a lifelong passion for mechanical problem-solving. A proud alumnus of the class of 1982, Pat’s journey began when the institution was known as Northeast Iowa Technical Institute (NITI). Growing up near Petersburg, Pat always knew he wanted a career around trucks. While driving initially crossed his mind, a desire to stay close to home led him to mechanics. Drawn by the College’s afordability and convenient location, Pat started taking classes the day after he graduated from high school, wasting no time to pursue his passion.
Being inducted into the NICC Alumni Hall of Fame is a particularly meaningful honor for Pat, coinciding with his retirement this year. Refecting on his journey, Pat acknowledges that while traditional high school wasn’t his strong suit, the focused, practical environment of the College allowed him to fnd his footing. Through decades of service as both a technician and an educator, Pat has left an indelible mark on the local diesel industry and the hundreds of students he inspired along the way. Thinking about his work with students, Pat shared: “Helping them build that hands-on confdence is what kept me coming back every day.”
After completing the program, Pat built an impressive career in the diesel industry. He gained valuable experience working for a dealership, repair shops and a prominent regional trucking frm, as well as running his own repair business. His impact on the feld expanded exponentially in August 1997, when he returned to NICC as an instructor. For nearly 30 years, Pat shared his vast Hall of Fame Celebration

In May 2007, the duo took a calculated leap of faith and opened an Express Employment Professionals franchise, operating under the frm belief that failure was not an option. Today, Mike co-leads a thriving operation that has expanded to nine regional ofces and roughly 50 employees, where he manages with a culture-frst mindset and a deep commitment to his staf. Mike Schaul
Marketing Management, ‘89 Mike’s journey to business leadership is one of motivation, sharp entrepreneurial instincts and a relentless work ethic. Entering the Marketing Management program at the Peosta campus in the fall of 1987—when the institution was known as Northeast Iowa Technical Institute (NITI)—Mike discovered early on that the practical, hands-on environment and supportive faculty were exactly what he needed to thrive. Driven by an innate desire to outwork the competition and achieve fnancial success, Mike found a highly rewarding, natural career outlet in the fast-paced business world. After gaining critical leadership experience in restaurant management with Pizza Hut, Mike built a successful 16year career as a sales and distribution manager for the Telegraph Herald, where he led a team of 25 employees. It was during this time that he crossed paths with Matt Timmerman, a stafng service manager who would become his close friend. Recognizing a shifting industry landscape, Mike approached Matt with a bold vision

Being inducted into the NICC Alumni Hall of Fame is a deeply meaningful milestone for Mike. What began as a practical choice for an afordable, career-focused education has blossomed into a legacy of regional economic impact, leadership and dedication to his team. When asked what he’s most proud of, Mike doesn’t list corporate accolades. Without hesitation, he points to the close, family-like culture of his business and the pride of having two of his fve children working alongside him. He credits his family, especially his wife, Tracy, as his biggest supporter through every risk and step of his journey. He recalls multiple faculty members, particularly Denny Zelinsky and Suzanne Seedorf, who made a major impact on his success by making learning real. Refecting on his role as a business leader today, Mike shared: “We’ve achieved more success than I ever dreamt of, and now, helping our people achieve their goals is what feeds my fame. Watching our young staf succeed, buy homes and grow into business partners is the ultimate reward.”

Matt credits infuential instructors like Denny Zelinsky, Suzanne Seedorf and Jim Onsager for giving him the practical tools he needed to succeed. After graduating in 1999, Matt entered the workforce at Avis Car Rental, earning a promotion to branch manager within six months, before transitioning to Crescent Electric. In 2007, Matt teamed up with his business partner, Mike Schaul, to launch their frst Express Employment Professionals ofce. What began as a single venture grew organically into a thriving enterprise. Today, Matt co-oversees nine Express ofces across Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin, employing roughly 50 staf members. In 2020, he further expanded his entrepreneurial portfolio by co-founding District 20 Supply, a custom apparel business that employs nearly 20 people.
Matt Timmerman
Marketing Management, ‘99 Matt Timmerman transformed from a self-described high school underdog into a major regional business owner by listening to the right advice and outworking the competition. Originally visiting Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) to register for the HVAC program, a lengthy, candid conversation with a NICC academic advisor changed everything. Recognizing Matt’s natural ability to connect with people, the advisor suggested he consider marketing or business. Matt took the advice, enrolled in the Marketing Management program and never looked back. Choosing NICC to chart his own course away from high school crowds, Matt thrived in the supportive college environment. Taking his education seriously—especially since he was paying his own way—he went from an average high school student to a regular on the dean’s list. Determined to jumpstart his career, he attended classes for fve consecutive semesters, balancing a rigorous schedule with the tireless work ethic he
Of all his achievements, Matt is proudest of creating opportunities for his employees to climb the ranks and achieve partnership within the company. This dedication to changing lives through professional growth has fueled his company’s talent retention and regional footprint. Matt’s connection to NICC is also a proud family afair; after his mother, Chris, lost her manufacturing job, Matt’s positive experience inspired her to attend NICC for Network Administration, eventually leading to a fulflling career at the College itself. Today, Matt remains a staunch advocate for two-year degrees, returning to NICC classrooms to recruit the next generation of “rock stars”. Supported through every milestone by his wife, Michelle; his daughters, Reese and Rylee; and his parents, Steve and Chris, Matt is deeply honored to join the Hall of Fame as proof of what can happen when people work hard and take their education seriously. “Because of NICC, I gained the knowledge, experience and confdence to succeed in the business world.”
