Some people—members and non-members alike—have implied that “you people,” as in the Board, “are this or that.” Just for the record, we, as Board Members, receive nothing for our time and efforts that we put into this organization. All the Board appearances are paid for by ourselves; that said, the average cost for me to participate as a Board Member was about $7,000 a year out of my own pocket. Member’s Voice The greatest part of NICA is the Membership! The Member’s Voice influences where the organization is headed and what it can improve, among other aspects. The NICA Office has been continuing their survey of responses. Some of our recent responses are featured below: Saree Miller, an Associate Member from Allegan, MI with the Allegan County Fair, says that many of her Concessionaires are NICA Members. She thinks NICA is an important organization because it encourages its Members to be more professional in their business relationships. This creates an asset to her when she is seeking new Concessionaires. She feels that the NICA News “does a good job of covering everything.” Saree admits that she has not made use of many of the benefits, as she thought they were mainly for Concessionaires, but would look into the Sherwin Williams one before they paint their grandstand. Thankfully, NICA has expanded their benefit partners through Source1 Purchasing, which opens up Members to discounts via Fedex, Best Buy, and Office Depot, among others, providing savings that anyone could find beneficial. Evert Lee, representing C & E Concessions, Inc. out of Mangum, OK, feels that his relationship with NICA has been good and he has “nothing bad to say.” Lee feels that there could be some different pathways NICA could always go down, but he is satisfied with his membership. He makes the most use of the Coca-Cola and Pepsi discounts. Being a small business and working events that are not always Fairs requires that he has to shop elsewhere sometimes as there will be no one who services these events for the Concessionaire, and the benefits always come in handy. In his mind, if he can save $5 on a can of oil and he has time, it is worth it for him. He has also recently broadened his route and makes 900 mile jumps. He especially likes to read articles that cover “people on the road” and how they are doing “their thing.” Lee says that learning a new way to do something that is easier and faster is a great way of bettering your own business.

Charlie Miller, owner-operator of Charlie’s Food Concessions from Sun Prairie, WI, says that he has always supported NICA from the very beginning and that he has not had any problems. He was part of the original State Reps Program (now called National Reps, which paved the way for our Regional Councils) for many years and help to establish Communication Committees where ever possible, many of which are still in existence today. Charlie has made use of several different benefits: Coca-Cola and Pepsi for beverage discounts and rebates, Arrow for trailer parts and air conditioners, and the Ford Fleet vehicle discount for the purchasing of three different trucks. He has, over the years, established his business which covers a much smaller area with the meat packing and food service businesses directly. He has his own refrigerated vehicles which makes it possible to take large orders at one time. Charlie and his wife, Mary, are lifetime members and she may use the computer to read the NICA News online, but he prefers to read and enjoy the paper copy. They both receive one, but from his old habit of being a State Rep, he remembers to pass one copy on to someone else. Jeremy Parsons, Manager of the Clay County Fair in Spenser, IA, feels that NICA is important to the Fair Industry because it has helped to provide high quality Food Concessionaires. He pointed out that there are many benefits that are useful to the Associate Members such as the NICA / Sysco Marketplace for their in-house operation, the CheckInn Direct Card through CLC Lodging when travelling, and the Sherwin Williams discount when they have to paint. As a Fair Manager, he likes to read about Concessionaires to hear and learn their point of view. Jeremy said that he reads the NICA News both online (when ever he gets a email from the NICA Now! he will flip through the pages) and the paper copy as well. The NICA Office plans to continue these calls to our Renewing Members. If you hear from us, let us know what’s on your mind! ▲ January / February 2017 NICA News

Thoughts from a This month’s Statement of Communications & Management Philosophy is from Daryl Whicheloe, CCE, Southern Oregon Food & Beverage: “Southern Oregon Food and Beverage is a food concession company dedicated to providing great food at reasonable prices. We strive to give the fairgoer an experience that is always enjoyable and positive. The food concession business and the entire Fair industry cannot survive without communication and team work. This is accomplished by the Fairs individual departments such as managers, office staff, maintenance, and volunteers along with organizations such as WFA and NICA and many more that produce these fairs. It is crucial that we, as a group, all work together to provide fairgoers with positive experiences that will encourage them to return to year after year. That is why, as a business, Daryl Whicheloe, CCE Southern Food and Beverage owners and staff can always be found trying Southern Oregon to help office staff, maintenance crews, other vendors and the fairgoer Food & Beverage in any way possible. As an owner I take a lot of pride in my business and this industry, so it is a lifelong effort to keep improving the quality and CCE Earned in 2013 standards in both my own business and also of those around us. As long as we continue to create new and innovative products and concession ideas, the concessions and the Fair industry will succeed.” ▲

the IAFE Convention

Photos & Captions by Rey O’Day, Executive Manager of Councils & Jessica Gottsche, Northeast Council Coordinator

NICA’s participation at this year’s IAFE Convention was nothing short of revolutionary, with many members participating in the session “Double Jeopardy: The Cost of Doing Business for Fairs and Concessionaires,” presented by NICA and IAFE. It was billed as a “game show” that revealed “the many categories, complexities, and cost centers of running a mobile concession and the fairs that host them.” Our Industry Appreciation Night also went off without a hitch and allowed everyone in attendance to network and enjoy each other’s company. NICA’s booth at the Trade Show gave us another chance to share our mission with others. These photos were taken at various points during the event. ▲

West Council Annual Report Rey O’Day, Executive Manager of Councils

The West Council’s 10th Anniversary began in January where it hosted a plethora of events during the WFA Convention in Anaheim, CA. On opening Sunday they whisked 80 folks off to Sysco Riverside. The Sysco team toured them through the largest and greenest warehouse in the country, fed them a delicious lunch, and showcased new products including some new meat cuts. They sponsored David Scott Peters who presented a workshop with great tips on scheduling and supervising labor costs. At their annual membership meeting Jeff Thornberry, Pristine Systems, was awarded his CCE designation. Rodger Smith, Sysco VP of Business Development spoke to our members about the value of our partnership with Sysco and Jim Guenthner spoke about the value of our partnership with Source1 Purchasing. Drew Ammerman was given a “Vision and Tenacity” award for understanding the possibilities of the NICA Sysco Marketplace. Incoming President Paulette Keene represented NICA. An Advisory Committee of members who have provided at least six years of service to the West Council was formed. Chuck Dugan, Don Delahoyde, CCE, Jennifer Giordano, Judy Henbury, Mark Hill, Don Long, and Tony Trafton were presented “Greatly Appreciated Volunteer” plaques during a luncheon with lively conversation. As the Council thought about what they wanted to accomplish, each Member committed to bringing in two members (one is required), engaging more commercial members, being relevant, raising money, and promoting benefit usage to our current members because it provides value to our membership and rebates that support NICA programming. The West Council installed Lisa ThompsonBaker and Mike Newman as new members. Spring began a flurry of fair visits and events: Pima County Poker Tournament, Industry Standards Meetings, Santa Maria Strawberry Festival, Santa Barbara Fair, and Del Mar Golf Tournament. We were proud that Isabella Barona, granddaughter of Fred and Carmel Pittroff and Keanan Moreno, employee of Family-aFair won scholarships. Summer buzzed! It began with awarding Dale G. Amy Davis Smith came to Del Mar to pass the baton onto Rebecca Kelley for our Sysco corporate support of the NICA Sysco Marketplace. Don Delahoyde, CCE and Carmel Dyer-Pittroff announced they would run for the NICA Board, which created a healthy candidate field of six. The Board then hired Michelle Card as Executive Director. The West Council was pleased to host her at the Ventura County Fair and the OC Fair. There was a rally at the Jackson County Fair,

Taking a Cruise with Carnival April Wood, West Council Member, Rawlings Concessions

I was the lucky winner of the grand prize of last year’s membership contest drawing—a complimentary cruise sponsored by Coca-Cola. Our cruise was a fantastic adventure. We really enjoyed Puerta Vallarta, a resort town on Mexico’s Pacific Coast. This trip was made possible by NICA and Coca-Cola, a great partner of many Concessionaires. NICA is driven by members and their level of participation and, as we say, at NICA your level of involvement determines the level of return. I am thrilled every time I can introduce NICA to someone who is new or never heard of our organization. I truly believe in the mission of NICA and getting other people involved because we can grow to be better and better by our number one asset... human capital, the thoughts and ideas of our members. Thank you NICA for the opportunity to serve and thank you Coca-Cola for your valued partnership. Our cruise was wonderful and we made life long memories! ▲

Throughout the year, there is the business of visiting Fairs to talk about important concerns, planning for and participating in Industry Conventions, visiting Sysco OpCo’s, completing goals like the NSM Program Playbook, providing how-to information, and applauding when so many of our members win significant Fair awards for doing an excellent job as Concessionaires. In summary, West Council signed up over 50 new members, netted $37,000 in fundraising, consistently supported NICA benefit revenues by purchasing from Sysco and First Data, donated $2500 to Fair foundations, earmarked $950 to the 2017 Gene O’Brien, CCE Scholarship and hosted over 1000 people at events. New Year, New Look!

Welcome to the Enhanced NICA / Sysco Marketplace Website Brittany Ventriglio, Marketing Communications Representative, Source1 Purchasing 2017 is upon us and the NICA / Sysco Marketplace team is uncovering new ways to more effectively serve our MarketPlace members this year. We recently underwent some enhancements, and the improved NICA / Sysco Marketplace website now offers users a more engaging experience, including a wider range of content, simplified navigation and a fully-responsive layout that is even accessible on your mobile device. You can view it now at www.NICA.Source1Purchasing.com.

New Tools & Resources By navigating to the “Suppliers” page, members will now find a comprehensive list of all suppliers available through the NICA / Sysco MarketPlace Program. Included are supplier overviews, key categories and associated brands, supplier program benefits, support contact information and more. Other enhancements include recommended product guides and commodity reports which can be found on the “Member Resources” page. Within these reports, members can review contracted items by category as well as the most frequently purchased items through Sysco. Monthly commodity reports are also featured and highlight monthly price fluctuations. Newly-enrolled MarketPlace members often ask questions such as “How do I establish a Sysco account?” or “How can I order specialty items?” Well, look no further for those answers—our newly-improved FAQ section dives into popular topics including account maintenance, Sysco invoicing, product forecasting, and more.

Simplified Navigation The new and improved website is also a portal to members’ most valuable resources. Looking to attend the next NICA event or read the latest NICA News article? The site keeps concessionaires connected by allowing members to sign up for events and read the latest NICA publications. Also, visitors can connect directly to Sysco’s site without hitting the back button or opening a new tab. For those interested in becoming a Marketplace member, enrolling into the Program has never been easier and begins with just two easy steps mapped out on “The Program” page. “Our team is excited about the launch of the renovated website and what it means for our NICA visitors and MarketPlace members,” says Homero Miranda, Lead Web Developer for Source1 Purchasing. “Future enhancements are already underway.” ▲ January / February 2017 NICA News
