The Director’s Voice “It Must Be Nice!”

I often wonder, does the average Joe have any concept of the hours and overcoming of obstacles it takes to truly be successful in our industry?

Especially speaking as an owner operator that Justin Sattler, Director has built his business from the ground up, as well as the units I operate. I can certainly say in my Hello to everyone! Strategic Planning Update:

This year’s theme will be “Independent Days” in honor of the Independent Concessionaire.

Steve Nothem, President of Premier Financial Credit Union in New Holstein, WI will provide an educational seminar on the process of acquiring a bank and/or banker to help in the growth and financing of your concession business.

The NICA Business Expo will also include seminars on Soda Machine and Equipment Repair, DOT updates, ServSafe Certification, Finances, and more, running from the 2nd-4th of February, 2015. Seminars will run each day, culminating with the Annual General Membership Meeting and Casino Night on Wednesday. 1. What is the single most important challenge facing Concessionaires today?

The single most important challenge Concessionaires face today is the rising cost of doing business, whether it’s fuel, food cost, or insurance; the list goes on!

2. As a Board Member, how would you help overcome this challenge?

As a Board Member, I’m not sure how you’re going to help overcome it. The thing I will say is that you can’t overcome it by constantly raising prices and trying to get more out of our customers. Whether you’re a Fair, food operator, or game operator, there’s a limit on what people will pay. I think we have been pushing the limit for a long time!

3. Where do you see NICA in five years?

I’m not sure where I see NICA in five years. It has been very successful in the last 20 years. It’s definitely brought a lot of people in the industry together and has opened up a lot of avenues for Concessionaires to learn more about what and who is out there. My guess is that it still hasn’t reached it’s full potential as an organization.

4. What would you plan to help NICA get there?

As far as what I’d plan or would like to see for NICA, it’s a little more thinking outside the box and a little less of how we used to do it! It’s time to get ahead of the curve!

The biggest challenge to me as a Concessionaire is finding employees who can travel for three to four months.

2. As a Board Member, how would you help overcome this challenge?

By supporting the organizations who are trying to help us get the H2 and J-1 employees to work in our industry. I am also going to let others know how important it is for us to be able to employ people who can travel and gather some experiences of employers with foreign laborers and how they treat them. Also share letters of response from labors about their experience and relationships they acquired while working in U.S. 3. Where do you see NICA in five years?

In five years from now, I see NICA getting some younger Concessionaires involved and the present members leading and guiding them to create a stronger association with better relationships with fair boards and each other. I see us gaining more buying power with suppliers to get better pricing and service.

4. What would you plan to help NICA get there?

In order to achieve these goals, I believe we need to continue to work with Fare Foods and Sysco. I believe Source1 is a good tool for us. I believe we should educate people about this service, about discounts with Grainger, and other areas beside food supplies which can help all the members of NICA. We, the Board, are already working on a mentoring program.

Carmel and Fred Pittroff and her sister Anne came by to join everyone for dinner. Also Teresa Brander and family came by to cheer Rich and team on during the evening festivities. Rey and Jennifer took photos. Once again friends, members, family, and volunteers came together for a great day of NICA play that also provided a $1,000 donation to the recovery fund of industry leader and Barham Award Recipient, Elisa Hayes, Let’s Pretend Entertainment, and three new NICA members: Bill The “Gross First Place” winners Jonah Brede, Kim White, Justin Murray, Kit White & Nick Kanger Madaus and Chad and Tiffany Dugan.

“An open and honest, casual relationship with Fair management is an essential element to the success of Jack’s Corn Dogs and Confections. I believe that I must keep a truly open communication and understanding of the Fair’s needs in order to expect the Fair to understand my needs. It is very important to keep those lines open throughout the Fair, and throughout the rest of the year, between the two entities.

Honest communication is vital to work successfully with employees.

As an employer, I must be able to speak freely and honestly with my employees in order to keep the anxiety levels on an even keel. I encourage my employees to do the same.

My business is successful because of the help I have always had from other Concessionaires.

I make every effort to help other Concessionaires to do, and be, the best they can be. I always appreciate positive criticism from my fellow Concessionaires.

As manager of my business, I always have considered my key employees as my “family”. I treat them with respect and expect the same in return. We live in a “community” within the Fair industry.

It is inevitable that I get involved in their personal lives (deaths and illnesses). I am sensitive to their needs, as they are to mine. This sense of “community” makes the concession industry unique and special.

Open lines of communication with employees, other Concessionaires, and Fair management allows us all to learn each others’ weaknesses and strengths. I have had to face my weaknesses, and have learned to rely on my strengths. This “human factor” can manifest itself to the good of me personally, my business, my employees, and the events which I am honored to work.

In my thirty years as a Concessionaire, and meeting many, many diversified people, the diversity has taught me many lessons in life. The Fair industry, although it is very difficult, has given me the freedom to explore other areas in life.”

Erie County Fair Celebrates Jessica Underberg, Erie County Fair On August 6th, the gates will open to the much-anticipated 175th Erie County Fair in Hamburg, New York.

Planning for this year’s 12-day Fair began 18-months ago during the Spring of 2013 with brainstorming sessions directed by the 175th Fair’s Honorary Chairman, Bryan Wittman, Vice President of Special Events at Disney Global.

Wittman began his “entertainment career” at the Fairgrounds when he worked as a teen for the late manager Paul Laing. Wittman sums up the excitement for this event by saying, “The last 174 Fairs have been a dress rehearsal for the 175th!”

A clear set of goals were established that included celebrating heritage and traditions, increasing geographical reach/daily gate attendance, creating unprecedented anticipation for opening day, strengthening bonds with our neighboring host communities, and building on our primary mission of agriculture and education.

In order to feed the “buzz” about the 175th Fair, the Erie County Agricultural Society purchased a 1949 GMC panel truck, wrapped it with striking graphics and set it out for an 11-month tour of Western New York. By opening day, the truck will have been seen by over a million people in the region through appearances at parades, festivals and stops at sponsor locations. At these “stops,” a total of 17,500 commemorative wooden nickels will be distributed that will allow guest to gain FREE

admission to the Fair on Thursday, August 14th – Heritage Day (the actual day that the Erie County Agricultural Society was reorganized).

To tell our “story” to new audiences, we partnered with public broadcasting in Buffalo/ Toronto to produce a one-hour documentary chronicling the history of the Fair and to explore the passionate human stories behind it. The documentary premiered at the local historic Hamburg Palace Theater on May 29th and the initial broadcast airing of the program was viewed by 126,000 households.

With the goal of driving gate revenue, we have set in motion an expanded program of offers and discounts designed specifically for the special year.

Partners, such as our longtime vendors, offered suggestions that were eventually incorporated into our marketing strategy. Vendor Art Pokorny suggested ways to garner repeat visits that resulted in a $1.75 Bounce Back. Guests that purchase admission August 6th – 10th, can return the 11th – 17th with their paid, scanned admission ticket for just $1.75!

Our corporate sponsors are as excited about this special Fair as we are! Pepsi has stepped up to the plate to offer the “Twilight Time with Pepsi” offer. The 175th Erie County Fair logo will be found on 1 million Diet Pepsi cans throughout Western New York in July and August. Guests can redeem those cans at the gate after 7pm on the weekdays to receive admission for just $5. Try-it Distributing also went to bat for the Erie County Fair by securing the Budweiser Draft Horses for the duration of the Fair.

Strates Shows; they have been the carnival provider for 90 years! In honor of that momentous anniversary they are offering 90 minutes of FREE RIDES on Thursday, August 14th – Heritage Day. That’s right, guests will enjoy free midway rides from 11am through 12:30 that day!

Between the special gate promotions and the ride promotions, everyone should find a way to enjoy the Erie County Fair in 2014.

For the many generations who have enjoyed the beloved Fair, there’s even more to look forward to beginning with opening day (Wednesday, Aug. 6) and a concert by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra with conductor JoAnn Falletta. The concert promises to tell the story of the Erie County Fair through music using songs from Broadway musicals and popular movies. The concert will be capped off with fireworks, which also return to the Fair on two other evenings (Aug. 10 & 14). The last solo BPO concert occurred 58 years ago in 1956, making this appearance a very special occasion.

On the fun and quirky side, the Fair Bear mascot makes his comeback for the 175th Fair.

Concerts include Lady Antebellum, Dierks Bentley, John Fogerty, Brigit Mendler, Fab 4, 1984 Van Halen tribute band, in addition to the traditional motor events (tractor pulls, demolition derbies, bus derby and monster trucks).

The highlight event will occur on Sunday, August 10th when Nik Wallenda takes his longest walk of 2014 at 1,400’ while at 125’ over the Erie County Fairgrounds at dusk. This walk is even longer than the one he performed over Niagara

Falls. Over 50% of Nik’s Facebook fans are from Western New York and when asked how many people to expect he suggested 200,000 people.

The day will have its logistical challenges I am sure! In an effort to feed all of the extra folks on the grounds that day, all 3 heritage chicken BBQ vendors are working together to hold New York State’s largest chicken BBQ in Hickory Tree Park.

I am sure the smoke and grease from cooking 17,000 halves of chicken will add an interesting element for Nik’s walk!

The cornerstone of the 175th Fair will be the opening of the new 60,000 sq ft Agriculture Discovery Center. The building focuses on exhibitor and animal comfort and will be used throughout the year to support the Showplex facility, in addition to year-round agriculture education field trips for kids of all ages. 20,000 square feet of this facility is designated for agriculture education; the place where we can connect the 98% of the public not directly involved in agriculture with the 2% that are. Inside the building you will find a fullsize combine simulator, birthing pens, a robot that milks cows, the Harvest Theater (a steel grain bin turned movie theater), as well as the Blacksmith Shop, and Milkable Mabel. Once inside the building, you will be immersed in both historical agriculture practices, while being amazed at the technological advancements.

All of the planning, thinking, worrying and preparation, coupled with GOOD WEATHER and a SAFE EVENT, should make for the best Fair ever.

NICA MemberS Honored in painting NICA Members Mike & Vickie Lis, Wild Bill’s Curly Fries, were honored in late June when they were depicted in the forefront of a new painting commemorating the State Fair Meadowlands, located in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The event hosts over 50 food vendors and 150 rides and attractions on 35 acres of fairgrounds.

“State Fair Meadowlands is a vibrant, colorful toast to Americana that arrives promptly every year to delight our friends and neighbors with its colorful lights, majestic animals, thrill shows, rides galore and mouthwatering treats for every palate. Only Peter Max, with his fluid Wild Bill’s Curly Fries depicted in the brushwork and big bang of cosmic color, could capture painting of State Fair Meadowlands the fair’s magic on a canvas and radiate the wonderment and excitement we all feel when entering the fairgrounds,” said Al Dorso, President of State Fair Meadowlands. “We are deeply honored to have this spectacular work of art to cherish for years to come.” ▲

4. Trends Trends travel, as do Concessionaires.

5. Public Relations with the Community Cooperation can create more ideas!

6. Better Service to the Patron Because issues are resolved beforehand.

7. Improve the Image of the Fair We can work jointly to project a positive image.

8. ”EYes Around the Grounds” The more people involved, the more potential to avert accidents, security concerns, traffic problems, etc.
