Title: George’s Marvellous Medicine Author: Roald Dahl Reviewer: Shay

Summary:

George is eight years old. He lives with his parents and Grandma who he doesn’t get on with. He has enough of her giving out 24\7. He gets an idea to make A MARVELLOUS MEDICINE no doctor could make. He gets to work right away. It makes her grow like a giraffe. Will she ever go back to normal?

Review:

I thought the book was decent. My favourite part is when Grandma became a pufferfish. It was hilarious. I wish there was

more action and it was more nail biting. It was a tiny bit boring. I like when Grandma became smaller then a baby ant. It got a bit tense near the end when Grandma was shrinking in Mrs Kranky’s hand.

Title: Escape from Shangri-La Author: Michael Morpurgo Reviewer: Damien

Summary:

One day Cessie was with her mom playing her violin until there was a knock on the door. It was her long-lost grandfather. They let him in for a cup of tea. Her grandfather, Popsicle, lost his memory. Cessie is on the

mission to get it back. Do you think they will get it back or he will be sent to Shangri-la forever?

Review:

I gave this book two stars. I thought this book was ok. It was too easy. The book would be better if there were harder and longer words. I did not like the characters. I just wish they had different names. I did not like Cessie she was to annoying. There was one part when Popsicle was talking about World War 1. I thought that it was interesting when he was talking about it. I just like when people like Popsicle talk and teach me about war.

Istrongly feel that homework is a massive waste of time because it stops you from exercising, it is really stressful and boring. In my opinion homework stops children from exercising. 1 out of 5 children are overweight in Ireland because they don`t get enough exercise. I personally think homework should be banned. In my opinion homework is so stressful and 88 percent of my class agrees with me. Clearly homework is way too stressful that’s why it should be banned. Homework stops us from doing fun and important things like speaking Irish with my neighbour, spending more time with my family and helping my mom around the house. Obviously, homework makes us waste a lot of valuable time just revising what we learned in school.

It is obvious that homework clearly is a massive waste of time because it stops you from exercising, is stressful and boring. That`s why homework should be banned forever.

The players walked onto the field. Two teams were about to go head to head against each other in a tense hurling match known as the Sciath na Scol Finals. These two teams were known as Midleton CBS and St. Patrick's School. The two teams ran around and did some exercise to warm up before the big event and after that the announcements began. The teams lined up in two separate lines alongside each other. First the students playing on the side of Midleton CBS were announced one by one. The children in the crowd cheered and shouted in glee as others sang the CBS anthem. Then the students of CBS went silent and instead the children of St. Patrick's School began to cheer and clap as the students playing on the side of St. Patrick's School were announced. Eventually, the match began. It was a rough and tough scramble around the field to see who could get the first score and CBS took the chance and scored. CBS kept up the hard work as they scored two more points bringing the score to three to none. St. Patrick's School was losing and had to fight back harder than ever before to balance the scales in their favour, and balance the scales they did, after three consecutive scores the score was brought to a nice and even three to three. The tie had to be broken by the end of the match so one of the schools could claim victory upon the other. CBS decided to bring back their amazing winning streak and not only did they score once but twice bringing the score to five to three. St. Patrick's School then responded to CBS and also scored two points. With the score at five all and only a few minutes left for victory, the match got more tense than ever before. The match went on for what seemed like forever until finally, the tie was broken. With merely a few minutes left to score CBS scored one last time and when the time ran out, they won the match. CBS celebrated their victory with joy and glee, meanwhile the St. Patrick's School accepted defeat. It was an amazing, tense match like never before and in the end a well-deserved victory for Midleton CBS.

On the day of the final the CBS boys headed off on the bus to the match at 9am to get to the stadium on time. We were all really excited. The stadium was not too far away and the hurlers were warming up on the pitch when we arrived there. While everyone was crowding into the stadium the atmosphere got more and more electric. Then St. Pats, our rivals, came along and the noise got louder and everyone was singing songs. The hurlers were excited and nervous at the same time.

Then when it was time to start the game the announcer called each hurler to step forward and wave, as they introduced the team one by one. Then it began…. the Sciath na Scol final! We tipped off and we got off the mark quickly with a point to start the game off. We got two more points without any slip-ups. Next St. Pats surprisingly got one point back.

Unfortunately, one of our players pushed another play and they got a point from it.

Suddenly St. Pats were in the lead with four points, while we had three. After awhile CBS managed to get a point and it was 4-4, and it remained like that for six whole minutes. Finally, we broke the deadlock with a point, but two minutes later St. Patrick’s responded with a point of their own.

With just the last few minutes remaining CBS managed to score a vital goal to win the Sciath na

Scol final. Midleton CBS were the champions. Everyone was thrilled. We gave the team a guard of honour as they returned to school. The school celebrated by having no homework for the day and a school assembly to congratulate the team.

On Friday 20th of May, as soon as the school bell rang we headed straight to our double decker school tour bus to go to Cuskinny, an outdoor adventure centre. It was lashing rain and stormy as we headed off, and we were all a bit worried about being outdoors all day, but luckily it cleared up just after our bus arrived in Cuskinny and we had a lovely day. When we arrived in Cuskinny we were split up into groups and our group did the zipline first, followed by grass sledging, obstacle course, lunch, the squirrel trail and team games. The zipline was very exciting and scary, in fact they were all exciting! The grass sledging was so much fun, we rode a cart and it was hilarious watching everyone racing down the hill. For the team games we had to help each team to go around the obstacles, and it was very tricky! We all got very mucky after the squirrel trail and obstacle course. Overall, we had an amazing, very funny day. We’d really recommend Cuskinny for your school tour.

Throughout the summer term fifth class have focused on developing their skills in relation to project-based learning. Project-based learning provides opportunities for students to drive their own learning and allows them to develop important skills such as problem solving, critical thinking and time management. In addition, project works help ignite children's imagination and creativity, and provide an outlet to showcase and highlight these skills. The boys’ first assignment was to complete a project on a topic of their choice under the theme ‘Local History’. Having completed some preparatory work in relation to how to research, format and present a project, the boys worked independently for a period of a week gathering information and putting their projects together. The results were outstanding, with the boys producing work of a very high standard, on a wide and interesting variety of topics, from Midleton GAA to the Titanic! We also had a wide variety of project presentations including models, PowerPoints, posters and mini

books. This was great to see, as it enabled each pupil to play to their own strengths. However, it was the oral presentations the boys gave on their projects which really brought them to light and showcased the level of knowledge each of the boys had learnt about their chosen topic. The boys spoke confidently and knowledgably on their projects, while their classmates proved to be eager audience members who were quick to complement each boy on his project and also to ask some thought-provoking questions. All the boys learnt so much from not only completing their projects, but also through listening to the other boys’ presentations on such a wide variety of topics. Our first project was a huge success and we are already looking forward to seeing and hearing about the projects the boys’ have completed over the last two weeks on a personal interest topic.

Title: Prince Caspian Author: C.S. Lewis Reviewer: Natan

Summary:

Edmund, Lucy, Peter and Susan are waiting at a train station when all of a sudden, they are dragged into a magical land called Narnia. Narnia is under the control of an evil king. King Miraz wants to banish all the magical creatures from Narnia. Prince Caspian is gathering an army to stop Miraz. Will they manage to save Narnia or die trying?

Review:

I thought that the book was great. I thought the genre of the book is excellent because I really love fantasy books. The book has a great cast of characters. Caspian is brave and loyal. Aslan is old and wise. Reepicheep is such a cute and strong mouse. The theme of the book is also amazing. It’s about big groups of people manipulating smaller groups of people but the smaller groups fight back. The only bad thing about the book is that it has not enough action like in the duel. I thought the fight would be longer. Most fighting scenes weren’t great. Over all the book was amazing. Title: Tom Gates Author: Liz Pichon Reviewer: Martin

I thought this book was excellent. I thought this book was funny! It was humorous when Tom pranked Delia by giving her an empty chocolate bar! It was hilarious when Tom went on the V.I.P stage in the concert to make Marcus jealous! I like the illustrator. The drawings on page 13 had cool patterns! I liked the characters. Tom Gates is funny. I laughed when Tom annoyed his sister. Overall, I thought this book was great! I highly recommend you reading it.

Streaker is no ordinary dog. He’s a rocket. Trevor and Tina made a bet that if they don’t train Streaker, they will go in frogspawn. Can they train Streaker or will they have to go in disgusting old frogspawn?

Review:

I think this book is excellent. I thought the book was funny. I was laughing because Streaker was running 100mph and Trevor was flying like a rocket. My favourite characters were Streaker and Trevor. They are funny and smart. I like how detailed the book is. I like the pictures.

Title: War Horse Author: Michael Morpurgo Reviewer: Ethan

Summary:

A horse named Joey is taken from his original owner and into the battlefield of World War 1. There he sees the war. He makes and loses friends from both sides of the trenches. In No Man’s Land, there were barbed wires, cannons, explosions, the sounds of machine guns and lots and lots of dead bodies. Will Joey return to his original owner, Albert, alive? Or will he perish in the horrors of No Man’s Land?

Review:

I gave the book 5-stars because I thought it was excellent. There were a lot of plot twists. For example, when Joey went from a farm horse to a war horse. I liked how determined Albert was to be with Joey. He desperately tried to get into the army. I loved the happy ending. I felt relieved when Albert and Joey were reunited.
