Midleton CBS Primary is delighted to announce that we are opening our very first Early Intervention Class in September 2022. Our highly trained and dedicated staff are looking forward to the opening of this new class as it will provide a safe and fun environment for 6 new pupils between the ages of 3 and 5. We already have 3 established Special Classes here in our Yellow Corridor along with a Sensory Room, Gym, Life Skills Room and of course, Alfie our School Therapy Dog. More exciting days ahead as another new chapter begins in our school!

f you can be anything, be kind. This is motto here in our school. A place where kindness is rewarded and encouraged, and kindness is actively taught and praised.

The school has been using the restorative practice approach to repair friendships and to reflect on conflicts. One of the key question is “What do I do now to make things right?”

The students are guided to reflect on conflicts and to see where they could have been calmer and kinder. They are helped to resolve any arguments or disagreements using these strategies which they have been taught throughout the year.

anners are learned at home and we continue to build on those

foundations to help create polite and thoughtful students, students who look out for one another and stand up for what is right. We will help to give the boys another support system and another positive outlet to manage their feelings and worries. The boys will learn coping techniques and cool down strategies and use these daily both at school and home.

I

t is great to see our Kindness Tree’s blossom with so many leaves as we get to the end of Term 2. Each of these leaves represent a time when a boy was caught being kind to someone else within our school community. It is easy to see that kindness is a core value and a strong belief held here at our school.

T

he WOW Walls are also full of outstanding work highlighting our boys dedication to creativity and the arts. Each corridor taking time to highlight works that they feel deserve to be displayed for the whole school community to see and admire.

Here it is also worth highlighting that the process is as important as the end result.

Check out the latest recipients of the Gold Book Awards. This awards highlight all those boys who go above and beyond for those around them. Being kind to others is something we place a very high value on here at Midleton CBS Primary and these awards are a great opportunity for us to shine a light on these remarkable boys.

or Internet Safety Week 2022 Ger Brick delivered online workshops on internet safety & cyber bullying to 4th, 5th and 6th class. Ger is an experienced facilitator who delivers Cyberbullying / Internet Safety talks to Primary Schools across Ireland.

This online workshop provided the children with practical information and rules for staying safe and behaving responsibly online. The workshops explored respectful communication online, cyberbullying, social

media, keeping safe online, personal information, privacy and secure IT. It was a very informative, interactive and engaging workshop. Thank you to all of the boys for your participation, ideas and questions!

W

e are about to embark on our Creative Schools’ journey now that the Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted. We have already been busy doing some of our background research. This has allowed us to try and find out what our school would like to focus on as part of this creative journey. In order to do this each class brainstormed and the boys completed a Creative Zine detailing what it is creativity means to them. Stay tuned to hear all about what we will get up to in the coming year.

This project is being ably coordinated by Mn Mairead and we are very grateful to her for taking on this project. Her own class have been leading the way. As a class they have started to do Creative Homework as a way of making sure things are kicked off in a great way and Mn Mairead was spoiled with all the goodies the boys made as a result!

f you have been walking around Midleton lately and wondered who those smart young men are, wearing a beautiful new school jumper, then you are not alone. Some staff members have, in their spare time, become fashion designers and have designed a stunning new school half zipped top. We were delighted to see so many boys and staff members get one of these new jumpers and they arrived in late January. They are not only smart, but also warm and comfortable. Anyone interested in getting a new jumper should please contact their class teacher. When there is sufficient interest a second order will be placed. Looking good guys!

n March 16th the fresh, sweet smell of cakes wafted the corridors of CBS Primary as Mn. Gail’s Sixth Class hosted a cake sale fundraiser. It was a great success and the boys who ran the event got a lot of learning from it. They ran everything so well from collecting money, displaying and helping boys choose cakes wisely and tidying up afterwards they were fantastic, so thank you buys.

Secondly, thank you to the teachers who volunteered to help this fundraiser, Mn. Margaret, Mn. Ciara, Una and Celine for helping the boys with everything.

We also want to thank the parents and boys from 4th, 5th and 6th for kindly and generously baking the cakes. I know it was creative homework

We asked 4th, 5th and 6th classes to bring in cakes, and Múinteoir Gail’s class helped sell them. The fundraiser was a huge success and we raised €735.55.

We would like to thank all the children who brought in the lovely cupcakes and another thank you to the boys who helped out in the Halla selling the cakes.

I

t is great to announce that after a long and frustrating break from school sports that both sciath na scoile and cork city sports are returning in the coming term. The school will compete against other teams in the Urban 2 league in sciath na Scoile once again. The team will be hoping to build on the schools recent successes in this competition once more. After a two hiatus Cork City Sports will be making a return to the school sporting calendar. The boys are really excited to once again represent the school across different events at the city sports, we wish all our athletes and hurlers the very best of luck in both competitions.

e’ve had a busy time this term in the nurture room. We began the year discussing our new year’s resolution. Then we noted them down to form our nurture room resolution tree. We have some excellent bakers. Since Christmas we have made rice crispie squares and marshmallow cakes. For Valentine’s Day, we made heart -shaped marshmallow treats which we presented in a heart gift box. At present we are preparing for St. Patrick’s Day by creating mindful shamrocks and flags. We are also engaging in yoga, mindfulness and interesting conversation.

his term we organised a collection for the Ukrainian appeal. We collected the essentials requested by a local group for families in need amidst the war in the Ukraine. These included necessities such as blankets, sleeping bags, toiletries, tinned foods, baby wipes, nappies, first aid and medical products and lots more. To say our parents, pupils and staff were generous in donating is an understatement. Before collection day our school hall was filled with bags and bags of donations for the Ukrainian cause. We as a staff also gave a financial donation toward the appeal.

This financial donation was used to buy some extra necessities requested by the group coordinating the appeal. It just goes to show the generosity of the boys, parents, staff and school community in times of need are second to none.

In order to plan for this, the school’s Multicultural Committee recently administered a survey to households to identify the full range of nationalities in our xperiencing diversity is a school, and to find out how central part of school life households would like to in Midleton CBS Primary. Not celebrate their culture(s) on the only do we offer a broad and diverse range of learner experiences, but our school community itself is a rich tapestry of cultures and backgrounds. At present there are over 20 nationalities represented by the student cohort and we feel it is important to celebrate this day. This year we elected a new group to represent our students on The Student Council. The members of Our Student Council were elected after each class from 4th to 6th held elections to appoint their class representative on the Student Council. Our student council members are: Ronán, Conor, Aaron, Calum, Jack and Oliver.

We held our first meeting at the beginning of the year where we appointed the different roles to the members of the council.

and have worked very hard to ensure our students have a voice in our school. The student council have many responsibilities during the day. We have been preparing for our First Confession for a few weeks now. We have learned all of our prayers and sang our songs. We visited the church and went to mass. Father Jim came to visit us too. He always makes us laugh.

istear has been running in 2nd class all year and we have been having great fun.

Some of our themes have been The Titanic, Transport, The Arctic, China and Construction. For our socio-dramatic stations we have had adventures on the Titanic, we ordered food from our Chinese restaurant,

checked into our airport, played in the Witch’s kitchen and worked hard in Santa’s workshop. In our Tuff Tray we had Arctic adventures, we rescued frozen explorers, discovered frozen fossils and we played on a sandy building site.

We made many constructions; we designed roads, houses,

schools and building sites. Our art stations were very creative and we made magical witches’ cauldrons, beautiful coy fish and we designed fantasy schools. We have had great fun using playdough to make food, boats, characters and much more! We are so lucky to have Aistear in our school!

e have been learning about the rainforest. We learned how to use the iPad to research about lots of different animals like the Macaw, the Black-and White Colobus and The Emerald tree boa. We made hanging monkey’s,

flying dragonflies and crocodiles in art. We also

learned about the different layers of the rainforest where different animals live. The Macaw lives in the Emergent

We planted them in small pots which we keep in the classroom until they are ready to be put in our school garden.

We planted Carrots, Chives, Spinach, Strawberries and Potatoes. Adrian’s favourite part was putting in the tiny

My favourite part of learning about the rainforest was that each of us got to pick an animal and complete a report for it for our Literacy. Dylan chose the panda and Shay chose the orangutan.

.Eoghan’s 3rd class was buzzing with excitement. For two weeks the boys became researchers, doctors, linguists, detectives, vets, artists, psychologists.

Interesting, right? Each reading station was working on the Hidden Message Project. The boys were reading extraordinary books about extraordinary children. They were trying to solve the mystery about bad stripes which appeared on Camilla Cream, they were figuring out why the elephants weren’t allowed to join the pet club and they were wondering why little Doug doesn’t like hugs. They’ve learned lots of new words and they draw

e also celebrated World Book Week this term. We did many different activities to celebrate World Book Week. We went to the library and got to pick a book to read. We had a great day out. We also did cozy reading where we got to bring in slippers, blankets and dressing gowns to read our favourite book in school. It was so much fun. We had a book quiz with Múinteoir Anthony and Múinteoir Lucy’s classes. There were many questions about books and authors in the quiz such as Roald Dahl, Harry Potter and the Hobbit. On the last day of World Book Week, we had a dress up day where we all dressed up as our favourite characters. We also had an assembly on zoom to see all the costumes. We really enjoyed World Book Week.

We played our first match of the year against St. Patrick’s. We were very excited for our first match. Before we left school, we got our gear and Múinteoir Jason told us what positions we were playing in. We went on the bus to the Midleton GAA Pitch and as soon as we got there we had a warm up to prepare for the game. The match was forty minutes long.

The score in the first half was quite close but we started to pull away in the second half. In the end we won the match. We were delighted and felt very proud. The score was three goals and six points to four points. Our next match is against St. Joseph’s and we are really looking forward to the game.

any of the boys in sixth class have been busy recently creating their own short films. Each boy utilised their own unique skills to ensure that their ideas were translated to the big screen.

The boys worked together in small groups.

We first decided that each movie should convey an important message to the viewer.

Each group brainstormed their ideas before making storyboards to portray what their film would look like. They used some of the fantastic resources from the ‘Fís’ website to help them bring their ideas to life.

Once they were happy with

their ideas they began drafting and redrafting their scripts.

They also collected and brought in props that they wanted to use. After weeks of hard work, they finally had the opportunity to shoot their movies on the school ipads and

microphones. The boys had great fun shooting and reshooting their many scenes and learned quickly about the

challenges of shooting movies.

Once they had finished shooting they took turns assembling and editing their completed scenes.

They collaborated with other groups and gave each other feedback on how they could improve each other’s movies.

After much hard work the boys were delighted to be finally able share their completed projects on the school social media pages. It was a wonderful learning experience for the boys and we hope you enjoy their finished movies.

The boys in múinteoir Rory's class were busy designing and building rockets during Engineering Week week, well done boys keep up the good work

A

fter two years we finally were able to bring Sciath na Scol back to primary schools. We had our first match last week on the 24th March against St. Patricks at home in Midleton GAA pitch. There has been great history coming into the match, some good and some bad from when we played them last time in a final.

We knew it was going to be a battle and St. Pats did too. At half time it was one goal to two points and we were confident we could build on our lead. But St. Pats were right up for it too and stayed fighting. In the end the score was 3-6 to 0-4 a very good result for us. Our captain on the day was Charlie McCarthy. He encourages our team and leads us in the short warm-ups before the game.

Will Stokes the vice-captain also encourages us on the pitch to keep on going and stay positive. We enjoyed the game very much and we hope to have a lot more games to play and maybe even make it to the finals.

n the 15th of February for World Book Week my class went down to the hall and read books for Mn. Lisa’s 2nd Class. We were reading many varieties of books because the 2nd class boys choose them. It felt like we were down there for

half an hour but it was actually an hour. My cousin was there so he picked me to read to him. It was a great time because we hadn’t done anything like this in a long time. Both classes had fun in the end.

n World Book Day, I came into school and saw my class dressed in costumes as characters from our favourite books. We talked about our costumes and how

ur school did a decided to do a clothing collection fundraiser to raise money for the school. We collected used clothes that people kindly donated which were then sent to people around the world. The company that helped us do the fundraiser was Clothespod.ie.

We collected clothes on the fourteenth, fifteenth and on the sixteenth of March. On the fourteenth and the fifteenth of March clothes were collected before and after school. But on the sixteenth of March clothes were collected before school.

We accepted bags containing general clothing items, paired shoes, underwear, bedsheets,

we made them. We watched a movie and then had a Zoom meeting where everybody showed their costumes and characters to the other classes.

It was an amazing day.

Overall, this clothing collection was a great success with many people donating clothes.

ommunication skills, money management, decision making and listening skills are just some of the many skills that the boys in the Yellow Corridor have been developing through the implementation of the Life Skills Programme. Each fortnight, the boys in the Yellow Corridor have a unique opportunity to practise and develop these skills when the Yellow Corridor Café is opened.

Boys from each class take it in turn to operate the café and thanks to the generous donations from parents, there are plenty of treats and cakes to purchase and enjoy every second Friday the café is open.
