Journey Behind the Falls

WildPlay Niagara Falls Element Parks

PLAY

Until your Heart’s Content The thundering waters of the Horseshoe, American and Bridal Veil falls have been the star attraction for centuries. Nothing will break that powerful hold on the human imagination. The Niagara Parks Commission provides plenty of opportunity to see the mist from the falls at the Table Rock Complex, the Journey Behind the Falls or aboard the Hornblower Niagara Cruises. New in 2016, WildPlay Niagara Falls is opening a zip-line attraction and aerial adventure course for visitors to experience the Niagara Gorge in a unique way. Niagara Fallsview Casino and Casino Niagara offer adults a chance to try their luck at one of the table games, such as blackjack or poker, or at the slot machines.

NIAGARA FALLS VISITOR GUIDE 2016/17

The Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort brings top names in entertainment to an intimate 1,500 seat theatre. Marineland has provided close encounters with orcas, belugas and sea lions for more than 50 years. While the animals are the stars, roller coasters, carousels and a drop zone ride guarantee a full day of fun for the family. Niagara’s historic sites and museums pay tribute to the 200 years of peace between Canada and the United States. It wasn’t always that way. The Niagara Falls History Museum tells the story of the War of 1812, the three-year conflict that led to peace and friendship. Old Fort Erie on the Canadian shore of Lake Erie allow visitors to step back into a time of red coats, black powder and gray fortress walls.

Niagara Glen

Nature & Beaches Hitting the beach is always a nice escape from the summer heat. Since the Niagara Peninsula is surrounded by water, you’re never more than a short drive to a beach with warm sand and clear water. The Crystal Beach area of Fort Erie is “Canada’s South Coast.” The water’s warm in Lake Erie, the shallowest of the Great Lakes. It has a charming resort feel, rooted in its history as a vacation spot for Buffalo, N.Y. residents who flocked to their cottages there. Port Dalhousie, the cozy waterfront neighbourhood of St. Catharines, is home to two of Niagara’s Lake Ontario beaches. Lakeside Park Beach is popular with families. Located just west of the old Welland Canal, Lakeside is surrounded by plenty of activity - snack shops, boating and a long pier that juts into Lake Ontario. A visit to its vintage carousel is a delight for young and old... and it’s still just a nickel a ride. East of Port Dalhousie Yacht Club, Michigan Beach is more secluded than Lakeside. It has a long sandy beach and a view of the Toronto skyline. 18

NIAGARA FALLS VISITOR GUIDE 2016/17

Birdwatchers flock to Niagara to see migrating gulls gather around the falls and ducks that use the upper Niagara River as a stopover on their trek back north. The return of peregrine falcons to the rocky cliffs of the Niagara gorge and bald eagles to the upper Niagara River are a beautiful addition and rare sight to behold. For hikers, the trails in the Niagara Glen bring you close to the power of the Niagara River. The Bruce Trail, starts at Queenston Heights and winds its way 890 km along the Niagara Escarpment to Tobermory. If fishing’s your angle, you can try your luck with salmon in the lower Niagara and pike and walleye on the upper river above the falls, all the way to Lake Erie. The Dufferin Islands nature area, within walking distance of the Horseshoe Falls, is an example of protecting the area’s natural settings and animal habitats. A network of city-owned recreational trails and parks connects the Fallsview and Clifton Hill tourist areas to the rest of the city.

Romance in Niagara Falls ... A Perfect, Magical Setting in Which Lovers can get Lost Together

Niagara Falls and romance have gone hand-in-hand for more than 150 years. That’s when the railroads opened up Niagara to visitors from North America’s big cities like New York, Boston, Toronto and Montreal. Newlyweds flocked to the worldfamous site for their first romantic getaway, earning Niagara Falls its reputation as the Honeymoon Capital of the world. But you don’t have to be newlyweds - just young at heart - to feel that attraction lovers have to Niagara. The Falls, with their rainbows and billowing mist, create a perfect, magical setting. Even in the middle of

winter, the mist puts a coat of ice on trees and buildings, making it a frosted wonderland. Niagara’s hotels and restaurants are experts in making couples feel special. They offer packages for couples looking for some time to themselves. Amenities like whirlpool suites and on-site spas along with services like massages and room service help turn any stay into an indulgent, pampered experience.

Unique dining experiences like the Revolving Restaurant atop the Skylon Tower or the Niagara Parks Commission’s Elements on the Falls restaurant overlooking the brink of the falls offer once-in-alifetime settings for that intimate dinner for two. Enjoy a drink in the Watermark in the Hilton or R5 inside the Fallsview Casino Resort, just two of the many sophisticated, secluded spots to hide away for a little while.

A little dancing and live music always add some romance to a night out. Many nightclubs feature live bands.

Our Cuisine

Savory From Start to Finish

From fine dining to fast food, Niagara Falls has something to satisfy every taste bud. The vibrant restaurant sector attracts some of the best chefs in the country, making it easy for diners to find a gourmet meal. Celebrity chef Massimo Capra, an author and TV host, runs the Rainbow Room by Massimo Capra in the Crowne Plaza hotel. Capra features a fresh-market approach and Niagara ingredients. Jamie Kennedy, an Order of Canada recipient, has the Windows restaurant in the Sheraton-on-the-Falls hotel combining local cuisine with a spectacular view of the falls. Chefs are increasingly engaging in the farmto-table trend. With Niagara’s famed wines and homegrown tender fruit, it’s easy to indulge in a meal whose ingredients were grown locally. There are fine-dining options such as AG Inspired Cuisine, Ponte Vecchio and the Queenston Heights Restaurant. Another popular option are Brazilian steakhouses, such as Brasa, which is a popular Fallsview spot.

For something familiar, there are casual restaurants like Boston Pizza on Clifton Hill, Denny’s on Victoria Avenue, or TGI Friday’s on Fallsview Boulevard. If you crave international fare, there are plenty of Italian, French, Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Indian options within walking distance of most hotels. For something quick, just about every fast food restaurant has a foothold. Most are on Lundy’s Lane with others on Clifton Hill and Victoria Avenue. One of Niagara’s unique eateries is the Flying Saucer on Lundy’s Lane, a popular late-night hangout for locals and tourists. The “saucer-fries” are a local legend. The Skylon Tower with it’s Revolving Dining Room, also provides a unique dining experience 775 feet above the Falls. The city of Niagara Falls runs a farmers’ market on Sylvia Place behind the Niagara Falls History Museum Saturday mornings. In the summer, a road trip to Niagara-onthe-Lake takes you to the farms where strawberries, cherries and peaches are grown.

Our Wineries & Breweries There are more than 75 wineries in the region, from small boutique wineries to some of Canada’s biggest producers.

Some wineries host summer jazz, blues or rock concerts, using their vineyards as a delightful backdrop.

Just a short drive north to the wineries in Niagara-on-the-Lake or west to the Vineland area. Wineries big and small dot the countryside below the Niagara escarpment and along the south shore of Lake Ontario.

Cuvée weekend is held every year in Niagara Falls. It celebrates the best in the wine industry and includes a gala awards event - the Oscars of Niagara’s wine makers. This year the event was held March 4-6, 2016.

Many wineries give tours of their vineyards, production facilities and cellars. A winery visit is a quick and fun introduction to what goes into making wine. Don’t forget to have a tasting and check out the new vintages.

Although Niagara is known for its wine industry, Microbreweries all over the Region are catering to a new crowd. With on-tap samples and food pairings to tempt your taste buds, each brewery offers a notto-be-missed experience for beer lovers.

Ahhh... Sleep It’s Sweeter in Niagara

From five-star hotels to campgrounds, Niagara Falls has accommodations for every taste and budget. In the Fallsview, Clifton Hill and Victoria Avenue areas, you’ll find familiar names like Hilton, Sheraton and Marriott. Many of them offer stunning views of the world-famous waterfalls. With 1,000 rooms, the Hilton Niagara Falls, across the street from the Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort, is Niagara’s biggest hotel. Some of the other highrise hotels in the Fallsview area are between 30 and 36 storeys tall and have between 300 and 400 rooms. Most of the big hotels have indoor pools and health clubs as well as fine-dining restaurants on site. Clifton Hill, Victoria Avenue and Lundy’s Lane are home to familiar chain hotels and motels like Travelodge, Comfort Inn, and Howard Johnson. Many hotels have meeting or banquet rooms suitable for business conferences, dinners or wedding receptions. Heritage homes along River Road, a few blocks north of Clifton Hill, have been converted into charming Bed and Breakfast accomodations. If an RV, tent-trailer or pup tent is your style, check out KOA and Campark campgrounds at the west end of Lundy’s Lane or King Waldorf’s near Marineland. They are just a short drive from the heart of the action. Photo By Christine Hess
