THE HISTORY & CULTURE BEHIND IT ALL

While most are aware of the natural wonder the city is named for, it’s the fascinating history and rich cultural heritage across Niagara that have helped shape Canada as a nation. One of the most interesting places to explore is the Fort George National Historic Site, the headquarters for the War of 1812. It offers visitors the opportunity to recapture the experiences of soldiers stationed there 200 years ago. Continue the war history by visiting Old Fort Erie, the scene of the United States’ declaration of war on Upper Canada. The Laura Secord Homestead continues to enchant visitors as guides retell the stories that made Laura Secord a historical icon. Explore all the area’s history at The Niagara Falls History Museum, located steps from where the Battle of Lundy’s Lane took place, considered the bloodiest battle of the War of 1812.

Niagara roots also extend to the Underground Railway, as those escaping slavery were ferried across the Niagara River to safety. Visitors to the Niagara Freedom Trail can take in a collection of landmarks that highlight this important time. Explore our rich history of hydro electric power generation from the most towering turbine to the tiniest details, uncover fascinating stories hidden within the historic Niagara Parks Power Station.

Travel Tips

CURRENCY & EXCHANGE RATE

The currency used in Niagara Falls is the Canadian Dollar. While most businesses will accept American Dollars, you will get the best value by paying in Canadian currency. The rates for currency exchange vary and it’s recommended you have local currency on hand prior to arrival. If not, you can change your money for a fee at a bank, Currency Exchange Center or casino within the city once you arrive.

Entry Into Canada

International visitors to Canada require a valid passport and some may require a visa. Visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air, will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), valid for up to five years. Exemptions from an eTA include U.S. citizens and travellers with a valid visa.

For further information about documentation required, eTA details and border procedures please visit the Canada Border Services Agency’s website (www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca).
