NHPTV Connections Masterpiece Highbrow + Heartthrobs Poldark Neither pestilence, starvation, nor betrayal can stop Ross Poldark from fighting for justice in his native Cornwall.

Aidan Turner (The Hobbit) returns as the ex-officer, class warrior, mining entrepreneur, and lover The New York Times called “the noblest, hottest, most down-to-earth hero.”

As the season kicks off, Ross stands accused of luring a cargo ship to the rocks for plunder and murder. The judge is unsympathetic, hostile witnesses have been bribed, and Ross appears headed for the gallows. It’s just the first in a string of suspenseful episodes every bit as precipitous as the steep cliffs of Cornwall.

Alice’s estranged husband, Charlie Havistock, has shown up from England, determined to humiliate her for deserting him with their young son. All the while, the question on everyone’s mind is: Will India's freedom come peacefully or by force?

September 2016 Best of the Season September brings changes in the season, our personal schedules and your favorite PBS station's TV lineup. Our producers were out and about over the summer, working on new seasons of our series, as well as programs on the Granite State's water supply and the heroin epidemic.

Our time in Stratham comes to fruition this month, when we premiere Our Hometown: Stratham, with stories told by people who live in, love and know the town. While only a few stories can fit into the 30-minute program, all the stories shared with us in Stratham (and in Our Hometown: Peterborough and Colebrook) can be watched at nhptv.org/hometown.

Also this month: Will is back with new adventures! The 12th season of Windows to the Wild debuts at New Hampshire's iconic peak, Mt. Washington.

Churchill's Secret Winston Churchill was prime minister for the second time and as pugnacious as ever at age 78 – until he is felled by a severe stroke while hosting a state dinner at No. 10 Downing Street. Sent to his country home to recover, he and Lady Churchill manage to hide his condition, and a determined nurse helps him relearn to speak, stand, and walk.

Michael Gambon (Harry Potter) plays the great statesmen in an astonishing story of an incapacitated leader who plots to outwit the high government officials who are maneuvering to replace him.

Our Hometown: Stratham Stratham is known for its fertile farming soil.

Settled in 1716, some families in this town go back hundreds of years and many are still working the land today. But there is much more to Stratham than farmland.

From barnstorming presidential candidates to making music after a tragedy, to quirky things that make the town special, its residents sketch a memorable and endearing portrait of Stratham. The program is hosted by New Hampshire author and storyteller Rebecca Rule.

The Contenders: 16 For '16

It's a story known to few. But when awardwinning NH filmmaker Ken Burns heard about Waitstill and Martha Sharp, an American minister and his wife from Wellesley, MA, who left their children behind in the care of their parish and boldly committed to a life-threatening mission in Europe, he knew it was a remarkable story that needed to be told.

At a time when most Americans were turning a blind eye to the growing social injustice and totalitarian threat in Europe, the Unitarian Universalist Association—alerted to the dire situation by their fellow congregation in Prague—was committed to saving as many people as possible. The mission would involve secretly helping Jews, refugees and dissidents to escape the expanding Nazi threat in Europe.

With narration taken completely from the couple’s journals, Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War combines the intrigue of a spy novel with an intimate look into the lives of a husband and wife who were willing to put the well-being of strangers before that of themselves and their family.

In 2006, the Sharps were recognized at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem as “Righteous Among the Nations,” the highest honor given by the State of Israel to non-Jews.

The film is directed by Burns and the Sharps' grandson, Artemis Joukowsky.

This eight-part series reveals the humanity, the twists of fate and the surprising mistakes behind 16 of the most compelling and tumultuous presidential campaigns in modern history.

Marking the 15th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the U.S., this program explores the rarely told stories of the attack that took place at the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense, in which 184 people died. Most of the media coverage of the events of September 11 focused on New York City and United Flight 93; the experiences of those who were at the Pentagon when it was attached have rarely been heard publicly, until now.

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are two of the most polarizing presidential candidates in modern history.

Go behind the headlines Trump and Clinton have generated to investigate what has shaped these two candidates, where they came from, how they lead and why they want to take on one of the most difficult jobs imaginable.
