And Still I Rise

Henry Louis Gates, Jr. looks at the last 50 years of African-American history — from Dr. King to Barack Obama, from James Brown’s “I’m Black and I’m Proud” to Beyoncé’s “Formation” — charting the remarkable progress black people have made, and raising hard questions about the obstacles that remain. Today, Barack Obama sits in the White House and African Americans wield influence in every domain, from business to academia to the arts. At the same time, black people are incarcerated at six times the rate of whites and face financial inequality, while whites now have 13 times the wealth of blacks. Many of our schools and neighborhoods are more segregated than they were in 1965, and police killings of unarmed black men in places like Ferguson, Baltimore and Baton Rouge recur with tragic frequency. But why? To find out, Gates offers a fresh examination of key events and turning points in American race relations and black history. He asks: has the promise of the civil rights movement truly been realized?

The Battle Of Chosin

Pearl Harbor - USS Oklahoma

On Thanksgiving Day 1950, American troops were on the march in North Korea. U.S. Marine and Air Force pilots distributed holiday meals to those on the front lines. Everyone expected to be home soon. But soon after that peaceful celebration, American military leaders were caught off guard. American Experience presents this harrowing story of a pivotal Korean War battle.

The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 sunk the USS Oklahoma, killing 429 crew members when the vessel capsized. Explore what happened to the USS Oklahoma, the only battleship to capsize during the Pearl Harbor attack. New details about what may have caused the ship to overturn are presented, along with stories from Oklahoma survivors and the families of those lost.
