NHPTV Connections In The Net: Saving New England Fisheries

Over the centuries, New England's ocean waters sustained life, built an economy, and created an iconic culture. Once the Gulf of Maine was so rich with Atlantic Cod that the explorer John Smith reported he simply lowered baskets weighted with rocks into the sea and raised them loaded with fish. But much has changed since then. Today, regional fisheries and everything connected to the industry are threatened. In our new NHPTV documentary, produced in partnership with New Hampshire Sea Grant, Saving New England Fisheries examines the past and present state of fishing and its prospects for the future. By tracing the history of groundfishing, parallels in the circumstances in coastal New England and reinvigorated fishing in Newfoundland are shown. Scientists and harvesters from southern Massachusetts to northern Maine talk about the difficulties fisheries face, and how individuals and organizations are working to keep the industry alive by planning a sustainable future. Saving New England Fisheries is a one-hour special, hosted by Will Lange.

May 2016 Behind The Screens People who know I work at New Hampshire PBS often quiz me about their favorite shows. Usually there are questions about new programs and speculation about various plots of past series. Of course we know months ahead what programs are coming – and we preview them long before they air. Now you can get an inside track on our programs, too. In June, you're invited to the NHPTV Broadcast Center to find out how we choose programs, as well as to preview some that are coming and hear about what's in the works. Our "State of the Station" event is June 8th and our guest is Cynthia Fenneman, president of American Public Television, a leading syndicator of top-rated public television programs. Go to nhptv.org/events to RSVP. At the event, you'll also meet NHPTV staff, and find out what's in our program, events and community engagement pipeline. Additionally, I'd like to thank everyone who bid, bought, donated, volunteered or watched our 2016 Spring Auction. You helped make our largest annual fundraiser a success! Thank you. Peter Frid, NHPTV President & CEO
