MAKING AN IMPACT ON NH STUDENTS On a chilly but sunny November Sunday, Alec O’Meara walked up to the microphone and welcomed close to 300 high school students who were ready to roll up their sleeves and take the qualifying test for GRANITE STATE CHALLENGE. This is something that Alec has been doing for the last six years as an employee of Unitil. “I LOVE being a part of the production. It’s the highlight of my year when I get to come in and ask the power questions. I just have a ton of fun doing that,” said O’Meara. Back in 2012, Unitil was looking for a community partner with whom they could build and grow a strong relationship and help further their mission of supporting local education.

“We wanted to make education a foundational cornerstone of the types of things we support, and New Hampshire PBS seemed to be an ideal partner for that, and we’ve been having a lot of fun,” said O’Meara Thanks to Unitil, their contributions and their extensive participation, NHPBS is able to celebrate academic achievement and make a lasting impression on thousands of high school scholars. “These kids are actively competing against other schools — something they might not have an opportunity to do if they are not a part of an athletic team. So they get to feel like they are supporting their school and representing their classmates. That’s a special feeling to have and is something that GRANITE STATE CHALLENGE does,” said O’Meara. From early strategic meetings, to Super Sunday, and all the way up to the finale, Unitil employees jump right in and help during every step of the GRANITE STATE CHALLENGE production. “Whenever we’re at the finals, it is great to see the passion of the competitors and their celebrations. We can tell we’re making a difference with the kids, and that makes it important and special to us,” said O’Meara. NHPBS.ORG | 603-868-1100 | THEMAILBOX@NHPBS.ORG
