FEED

September was Hunger Action Month, an annual nationwide campaign that unites Food Banks, anti-hunger organizations, and the public to bring awareness and combat food insecurity in our communities. In Peoria’s Tri-County area, 42,020 people experience food insecurity on a regular basis. Neighborhood House works daily to combat this issue and ensure community members have access to nutritious food through Meals on Wheels, Food Pantry, and Sunday Meals. Help continue this initiative by donating to our feeding programs today.

FIELD TRIP TO KUNA

Our partners at Kuna hosted the Youth Program for an afternoon where they were able to take a tour, make pizza, and eat ice cream. Not only did the Youth Program enjoy every moment, but they learned some valuable lessons about food preparation.

It is Neighborhood House’s highest priority to meet the growing needs of the community. With that goal in mind, we surveyed our Food Pantry clients to gain a better understanding of what they need.

Food Pantry Survey Results:

50% of those we serve are 65+

56% of those we serve are living with a disability

32 out of every 37 pantry guests would recommend our food pantry to others

EMPOWER

SENIOR FARMERS MARKET NUTRITION PROGRAM

In July, Neighborhood House partnered with the Central Illinois Agency on Aging to help those over the age of 60 sign up for the Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program. This program helps provide nutritional food and educational assistance to seniors, so they can eat well and maintain good health. By enrolling in this program, individuals received checks to local farmers markets to purchase fresh produce.

ADULT EDUCATION SUCCESS STORY:

CLIENT T

Client T was referred to our Adult Education program through Big Brothers Big Sisters. He took his GED pre-tests and passed all except for Math. Both times, Client T scored 140 on the pre-test and would need a 145 to pass. Client T told the Adult Education Director that if she would allow him to take the test at the courthouse he would pass. He successfully passed all his GED tests - even scoring a 178 on the Math Test. To show how proud we were of his success, Neighborhood House was happy to host a graduation party to celebrate. He is now moving on to continue his education through the welding program at ICC.
