LEADERSHIP Dear Friends and Supporters,

Every year I reflect on the accomplishments of Neighborhood House, how we performed against our goals, and think about what’s next. Every year, we have exceeded our goals because of our dedicated Board, staff, donors, and volunteers. This year was no exception.

The first six months of our fiscal year were focused on the acquisition of Common Place, another non-profit located 0.5 miles from Neighborhood House, serving the same population with similar or complementary services. This move was well thought out with conversations and meetings spanning two fiscal years, to ensure that the acquisition would be beneficial to the community. By housing all of the programs out of Neighborhood House and combining some programming while expanding others, the amount saved through economies of scale allowed for more robust programming with the capacity to feed, educate and help more clients obtain and maintain employment.

Three months after the formal acquisition on January 1, 2020, was the beginning of COVID-19. We immediately pivoted our onsite education programs to correspondence for GED and literacy students and began delivering meals to the 60 children in our Teen Reach program. Within two weeks we were feeding 235 children on the south side of Peoria. Our food pantry was our smallest program and quickly became our second largest program, with a 40% increase in first time users, 15 new recipients weekly, with an overall 850% increase, costing the organization $40,000 a month to maintain. Our Meals on Wheels program had a 50% increase with 22 additional seniors still being added each week. None of these changes would have been possible, nor would we have been able to meet the high level of needs across all programming, without so many people volunteering to deliver meals, food pantry boxes, tutor, and cook.

Because of YOU, many children and seniors are no longer going to bed hungry. Because of YOU, some of our GED students have advanced multiple grade levels in six months. Because of YOU, we were able to help 58 individuals find jobs, which supports their entire families and fills the needs of community businesses.

I can’t thank YOU all enough for your generosity of time, talent and treasure. As Neighborhood House heads into our 125th anniversary of serving the most relevant needs in the community, I have no doubt we will continue to mitigate any obstacles that head our way, because of YOU! Gratefully,

LEADERSHIP Dear Friends, Neighborhood House was established in 1896 during a progressive era in the United States and Peoria, Illinois. The changes that have happened in 2019 and the beginning of 2020 reflect a new progressive era.

In 2019 I served as Vice Chair of Neighborhood House as well as Vice Chair of another organization right in the same zip code. As the vice chair of Common Place Learning Center, I started a difficult conversation with the board members about the sustainability of nonprofits. Both Neighborhood House and Common Place were making turning point decisions about programs and services and the Sherneka Cagle, Board Member effects both would have on their budgets. The Common Place Board of Directors all agreed that something should be done to help sustain the mission of the organization. From those conversations and a deeper look at the services being provided to residents in 61605 we determined that we needed to find allies to assist us with continuing the mission. The need is great, but the pool of funds was becoming less. With direction from the CEO and my relationship with Neighborhood House a conversation began. This conversation led to a difficult decision for the leadership of Common Place Learning Center and Neighborhood House. After many meetings and negotiations, it was determined that Neighborhood House would acquire Common Place after the close of the 2019 calendar year. This meant that programs offered to 61605 would still remain, but they would live in a new building with many of the same staff. In a pre-pandemic Peoria, this was a tough decision but one that felt right for all parties involved.

As 2020 began and our new normal at Neighborhood House started with different services and new staff, we were once again faced with new decisions to make. This time a global pandemic began that caused many in the area to have to shelter in place beginning in March. This pandemic brought new challenges for Neighborhood House leadership. We were forced to focus our resources on a huge need in Peoria, feeding people. As we work through the current state of the pandemic, we are thankful for the many volunteers who have helped us sustain in 2020. We have more than tripled the population we serve food to in a very short time. Educational programs are beginning soon, and we can continue to serve the community in our mission of providing resources and education to empower the community to reach their fullest potential through all life stages.

The board leadership weighs in on those difficult decisions that staff are forced to make daily. Neighborhood House would not be a pillar in the 61605 community if it were not for the great volunteers that continue to serve every year. I am honored to be the chair of this organization that has continuously pivoted to serve the community for 125 years.

RISING TO THE CHALLENGE Responding to COVID-19 For over 120 years Neighborhood House has responded to the needs of the community and today we continue to do so. Although the COVID-19 pandemic presented new challenges, we are committed to supporting those in our community who need it most.

Through the hard work and dedication of staff, volunteers and the outpouring of community support we have been able to adapt our programs to maintain meal services to our seniors, youth and even their critters.

By developing a new partnership with Northwoods Mall, we were able to host a successful canned food drive, which helped us supply our pantry for the additional days needed.

Heart of Illinois United Way also donated funds from the COVID-19 Emergency Response Funds for essential services to increase the value of our food pantry baskets by 400% and the total number of boxes by 700%. We are grateful for that funding and the impact it has made.

We are also thankful for the generous donation from Kim Blickenstaff and Greg Birkland, which allowed us to continue to meet the needs of the community through May. Here at Neighborhood House we are doing everything we can to continue to hold true to our critical mission. We are grateful for all the support our area community is able to provide.

OUTREACH THAT MATTERS Nutritious Meal Delivery for Seniors MEALS ON WHEELS

ADAPTING TO COVID-19

Neighborhood House is honored to have been delivering meals since the 1970s. Back then we were called “Meals with Love” and we delivered to 140 participants. Fifty years later we have a new name and are delivering to over 1,000 participants throughout Peoria and Tazewell Counties. According to Brown University, meal service is the last service needed to keep seniors independent in their own homes.

Meals on Wheels is more than just a meal delivery service as the social contact is just as important. Many of our seniors are isolated and the only person doing daily wellness checks are our drivers. We can’t tell you the amount of times our drivers have found someone unresponsive and called 9-1-1. When Art McMahon was driving, prior to COVID-19 which caused him to retire, he found one of his clients in the bathtub on a Monday, who had been unable to get out of the tub since Friday.

Here at Neighborhood House, we are dedicated to providing safe and healthy meals as well as daily wellness checks to our senior citizens whom are most at risk during this pandemic. With the onset of COVID-19 all our drivers quickly adapted to the challenge and began wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and social distancing to prioritize the health of our program participants.

Since March we have increased our Meals On Wheels program by 50%, an addition of over 500 seniors citizens. That number continues to grow as we add 22 new clients each week.

In addition, shelf stable meals were delivered in the event we were unable to deliver meals due to reduced staffing. Neighborhood House understands the necessity of these much needed meals. We will continue to implement new procedures to provide safe and healthy meals to our program participants.

Heather really enjoys delivering Meals on Wheels to seniors because she gets to interact with the participants which makes her happy. She also works at the restaurant Edge where she gets to serve delicious food and interact with people.

Heather always has a smile on her face and is such a pleasure to work with.

We had the privilege of helping one of our Meals on Wheels clients, Cleo Murphy, celebrate her 97th Birthday.

She shared stories of WWII and how grateful she is for the delicious meals we provide for her. In addition to the meals, she also enjoys the social interaction with our drivers and describes it as the highlight of her day.

OUTREACH THAT MATTERS Nutritious Meal Delivery for Pets CRITTERS MEALS ON WHEELS Neighborhood House delivers over 212,500 home-delivered meals annually to homebound seniors. Many seniors on the program have a pet that is extremely important to them. Neighborhood House knows the important role the pet serves in the life of the homebound senior who lives alone. Studies have also indicated the ever present loyalty of a pet reduces stress, physical suffering, enhances self-esteem and, most importantly, combats loneliness and emotional isolation.

One thing we discovered with our seniors is they would share their meals with their pet if they didn’t have pet food, causing the pet and the owner to not receive proper nutrition. With this in mind, we initiated the Critter Meals on Wheels program. Through this program, participants are able to eat their lunch and we provide pet food for their animal. At the present time, we are delivering pet food to 158 pets. With support and donations we have received from individuals, as well as continued support from community partners like PetSmart, we have been able to supply our seniors’ furry friends throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

OUTREACH THAT MATTERS Feeding Children and Families AFTER SCHOOL MEALS AND SUMMER FEEDING PROGRAM Neighborhood House is committed to seeing no child go hungry. We provide free after school meals to children 18 years old and under during the school year. When the state mandated school closures went into effect during COVID-19, we quickly shifted this program to daily hot meal deliveries to our 60 youth program participants.

These numbers quickly grew to over 200 children receiving daily meal deliveries.

As schools return to session, whether inperson or remote learning, food insecurity remains.

Here at Neighborhood House we are committed to helping our children year-round no matter the circumstances. We will continue meal deliveries to our children, as well as enrichment materials provided through Teen Reach. Our area youth are our future, and Neighborhood House is here to provide resources and education to empower them to reach their fullest potential.

PANTRY PROGRAM

SUNDAY MEALS With the help of 18 local churches and organizations, families can come to Neighborhood House every Sunday for a meal. Meals are served at 12:00 p.m. This program is funded and operated by volunteers.

Through the generosity of our community and volunteers, we have been able to keep our pantry program open, increasing our pantry by 850% as the community needs rise. We see numerous new recipients, 40% of which have never utilized a food pantry prior to COVID-19. Unfortunately, we could not maintain this level of growth. We are returning our program to twice monthly, in order to maintain sustainability, however the community need remains.

ADAPTING TO CHANGE Tradition of Adaptability – Child Care Closure Due to a variety of external circumstances beyond our control, we made the difficult decision to close the child care center in August 2019. With a decreasing birth rate and increasing competition, our 118 capacity licensed child care center only had 30 children attending, causing a projected $100,000 loss. While we were saddened to end three centuries of caring for the south side’s youth in this capacity, our focus was on long term sustainability.

Neighborhood House has a history of reinventing itself based on the most prevalent needs of the community. As we head into our 125th year as an organization, it is interesting to reflect back upon the long history of Neighborhood House and collaborators and how they shaped the landscape in Peoria today.

In 1906, the Catholic Women’s League started the first day nursery inside of Neighborhood House. For 113 years and multiple generations, this program not only provided a safe place for children, it also focused on education to reduce the disparity between children growing up in lower socioeconomic status homes.

When Peoria had far less businesses and social service organizations, Neighborhood House’s innovative nature of creating programs to fulfill needs served the community well. As Neighborhood House created programs, we welcomed relinquishing those programs to organizations willing to step up and specialize in that area.

Neighborhood House was a settlement house that constantly evolved: • Created a social enterprise in 1901 with Bradley Polytechnic Institute • Opened a manual training shop in 1903 with the first architectural drawing classes for men and nursing for women • Provided a free medical clinic with the help of Junior League • Provided a free dental clinic • Opened a kindergarten classroom in 1903 • Opened the first special education classrooms • Provided summer camps to children with disabilities • Provided the first dance classes • Supportive services for Veterans during war time • Services for the blind, which became the Blind Center • Day services for adults with disabilities before becoming EPIC • Stay Out Front (Headstart) started in 1965 • Journal Star took over the Red Stocking program in 1977 to supervise • Women’s auxiliary was formed in 1975 to help with Meals with Love (Meals on Wheels) Even though programs change, the overall mission of Neighborhood House has not: To provide a safe environment, resources, and education to empower our community to reach their fullest potential through all life stages. We are proud to continue the tradition of adaptive services to best fulfill the needs of our community.

“Neighborhood House is concerned with the family and each one of its members. It aims to afford opportunity for each individual to develop a satisfying life in the home, the neighborhood and the wider community. In doing so, it supports the inherent value of every individual.

Neighborhood House crosses lines of race, religion, national origin and economic status seeking consciously to involve relationships between individuals and groups of different backgrounds. To this end, it provides opportunity for a valuation in individual groups and inter-group experiences.”

COMMON PLACE ACQUISITION Acquisition of Common Place and Impact On January 1, 2020, Neighborhood House acquired Common Place. After months of discussions, meetings, and through extensive collaborative efforts from the Boards of both Neighborhood House and Common Place, it was agreed this acquisition would be in the best interest of the community and people served by both organizations.

Only separated by 0.5 miles, Neighborhood House and Common Place already had strategic partnerships in place and were already collaborating on several existing programs. Neighborhood House had been feeding the children at Common Place after school and in the summers for years. The children also received Christmas gifts through Neighborhood House’s Angel Tree program. The families of Common Place attended Sunday meals at Neighborhood House.

Both organizations had similar and complimentary independent programs as well.

Each organization had a food pantry and provided tutoring for children. Common Place’s Adult Education and Literacy programs integrated seamlessly with Neighborhood House’s Financial Empowerment and Employment program, as educational disparities are often barriers to obtaining a job with a livable wage. By providing all of these programs in the same location, it was more efficient and convenient for clients who have transportation barriers. The majority of our clients in the 61605 zip code, the 2nd poorest zip code in the state, face these types of barriers.

Through economies of scale, the available resources have been utilized to make a more significant impact for the people we serve, instead of wrapped up in the maintenance and security of two buildings. Those resources have allowed us to create multiple levels of each class offered, which has already proven to help our adult learners move between grade levels far more quickly than they could have otherwise.

With the onset of COVID-19, we were easily able to pivot resources from tutoring and feeding 60 children on site to delivering meals and resources to over 200 children on the south end.

As external factors continue to plague non-profits, such as minimum wage increases, reduction of funding, and now a global pandemic, strategic partnerships and collaborations will be key to long term sustainability and weaving a tighter net together so fewer community members fall through the cracks.

EDUCATION & EMPOWERMENT Adult Education Neighborhood House is here to help uplift our community through all life stages. Through our recent acquisition of Common Place we are able to offer a wider array of adult education services. Whether seeking to complete a GED, become a better reader, or further their education in general, Neighborhood House’s Adult Education Program can help anyone achieve their goals.

Angelique tried to get her GED years ago but after hitting several hurdles achieved her CNA without her high school diploma. She wants to continue her schooling in massage therapy or as a nail technician.

“Neighborhood House is helping me do that, I love coming here” she states.

“Everyone is so nice and helpful.”

Program Success Stories We are thrilled to see how our adult learners are thriving. Several of our students are achieving and exceeding their goals.

Ervin has been working on his GED for 5 years. His schooling level stopped at 6th or 7th grade.

When he started in the program he could barely read and didn’t have strong math skills. His own children have all graduated high school and told him, “it’s his turn”. He stated while he loves his children’s encouragement, “I’m doing it for me” so he can “read his grandkids a book”. He enjoys studying at Neighborhood House. “Everyone is here to help, the tutors are great, I get so much out of it.”

EDUCATION & EMPOWERMENT Financial Empowerment and Employment Services In order to alleviate and break the cycle of poverty, one needs stable employment and financial stability.

Here at Neighborhood House we are seeking to accomplish this by providing families with free employment, financial, and income support services.

Employment Coaching: • Emphasis on soft skills – as requested by employers • Assistance with resumes, applying for jobs and interview preparation • Clothing boutique provides clothes for interviews and 1st week of work • Work with employers – have job leads ready to hire our candidates • Develop and activate your career plan • Job coaching • GED and Adult literacy classes onsite • Computer lab available for use Financial Literacy: • Develop money management and budgeting skills • Learn how to understand credit reports and build positive credit history • Learn how to make money work to the highest benefit • Establish positive financial habits with family • Improve personal net worth through identifying and applying for benefits

Program Success Stories Several of our participants face multiple barriers due to lack of education, experience and sometimes criminal histories. Here at Neighborhood House we strive to provide resources and education to empower our community to reach their fullest potential. We are thrilled to see that mission in practice within this program, as many are putting the strategies and techniques they’ve learned into their routines.

Prior to attending our program, one participant never saw a need for a savings account. Now they are using it to help save money, to fund the goal of moving out of the Dream Center.

Program Needs We are proud of all of our participants for taking the first step in working towards their goals. Your volunteerism and support is critical to maintain this program and it’s future success stories. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: – Teaching lunch and learn sessions – One on one job coaching/mentoring – Tutors Thank you to all of our supporters and volunteers.

Scottie Echoles-Bey is working towards his GED through our Adult Education program and is now employed with Neighborhood House helping to make a difference in the lives of others.

He is an asset to our organization and a true testament to the lasting impact our programs have on our community.

Joey Parker is working hard to achieve his GED through Neighborhood House, but still struggled to find employment. When we contacted Gerard Weigand at UFS and told him about Joey, Gerard hired him that day.

“As a business person it is our duty to train the next generation of workers. Those who do not check all of the boxes are sometimes the ones who surprise you the most. Be willing to give someone a chance, you will change their life.”

FUNDRAISING RAGBRAI 2019 Our team excitedly participated in the 47th Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) on July 21, 2019 – July 27, 2019. Our riders, consisting of Ryan Deemer, Heather Fitzanko, Samm Cwinton, Rey Villarreal, Nick Welsch, Ryan Huber, Staci Wolfe and Andrew Galligan, rode over 427 miles across the state of Iowa to help Neighborhood House fight hunger. We are beyond grateful for their participation in this fundraising event for Meals on Wheels.

Our riders were eager to participate again in RAGBRAI this July 2020, but unfortunately due to the spread of COVID-19 this year’s RAGBRAI has been postponed until next summer. Our team is anxious to participate in next year’s 48th RAGBRAI event and is currently working on ways to ensure our community does not suffer from the loss of this major fundraising opportunity.

FUNDRAISING Saddle Up 2019 Our 16th annual Saddle Up for Neighborhood House was another successful fundraising event. The lively, country western themed event featured a live band, whiskey tastings as well as silent and live auctions.

This year our fund-a-need campaign was centered on feeding kids, which raised $22,132.

With the ever-changing situation and uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our Saddle Up fundraiser for 2020. Our team is working on virtual fundraising opportunities to help prevent the negative impact this loss of revenue will have on our services the community needs. Watch our Facebook page and website for ways you can continue to partner with us.

Each year we take time to recognize those in our community who partner with us to support our programs and our community. Although we wish we could recognize all our community partners, it is an honor to present awards to a few individuals and organizations each year.

FUNDRAISING FOOD FIGHT 2020

Neighborhood House hosted it’s 7th Annual Food Fight event on February 27, 2020. This Food Network inspired event is one of the most sought after tickets in Peoria. The event begins with a live auction for a guest cooking spot along side our chefs during the competition. Once the battle begins the chefs have 45 minutes to make an entrée with a bag of secret ingredients. It’s a fun competitive social event where you get to see the talent of local chefs, as well as taste signature items from each chef.

This year we had a first ever tie for the winner! The winning chefs were Graham Mullet and Dustin Allen. This year’s People’s Choice winner was Jeff Foster. A big thank you to all the participating chefs for donating your time and skill to help raise money for your community and Neighborhood House. A special thank you goes out to Chef James Kremer for choreographing the chefs, their stations and, of course, the mystery ingredients.

Due to the continued spread of COVID-19 and the direct impact the local restaurant industry has faced, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our Food Fight 2021 event. Our team is working diligently on alternative fundraising opportunities to ensure our community programs keep pace with the growing need, despite this loss of revenue. We want to thank all our local chefs for their continued support of Neighborhood House and look forward to seeing them back in 2022.

Neighborhood House was awarded the 2019 Community Impact Torch Award for Business Ethics. With $.89 out of every dollar going directly to programming and exceeding 19 other factors regarding business ethics, Neighborhood House is a strong organization that has been sustainable for 125 years.
