Turning the White Rose GREEN A unique festival combining family fun and green-conscious living and artistry By: Kristen Evans, Downtown Inc

D

owntown Inc is turning the White Rose City green on Saturday, April 23. Go Green in the City, now in its eighth year, promotes healthy, local and green living.

The event is free to the public and provides interactive entertainment for families. This is the biggest Go Green in the City yet with 4-4,500 attendees expected.

The festival has expanded from the unit block of North Beaver Street to include North Pershing Avenue and Clarke Avenue. Visit the WITF Kid’s Zone (N Pershing,) for family-friendly activities including a hay bale maze sponsored by Penn Farmer’s Market, a petting zoo and tours and events in the York Heritage Trust’s Colonial Complex.

More than 75 vendors selling artisan crafts, green products and locally sourced foods will exhibit at the festival. Live music will be held in the White Rose parking lot from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Business Growth Through Technology

I

got chills. During a keynote address at MANTEC’s fourth annual Business Growth Conference, John McElligott of York Exponential shared the story of The York Plan. The plan was developed in 1940 by a collaboration of local manufacturers to meet the country’s needs in advance of involvement in World War II. That plan allowed for Pennsylvania manufacturers to play a huge effect on the nation’s war effort. While I cannot quote John verbatim, it was York that led the way. As we enter the next industrial revolution, he challenged, why can’t York lead the way again?

We absolutely should!

Let’s get started!

Nearly 200 manufacturing and industry leaders attended the conference and many found the day thought provocative and insightful. Business growth was broadened this year to include a theme of Smart Manufacturing: The Technology Revolution.

It is here, TODAY. We do not have to wait for “future” technology. Technology is changing the manufacturing landscape and the workforce will need to keep up. Millennials are early technology adopters while the youngest generation are technology natives.

Weldon Solutions showed off automated systems and robotic arms while

collaborative robot, Sawyer, from Rethink Robotics and ONExia, placed a high tolerance part onto a metal rod.

Participants were able to teach Sawyer new tricks. It was as simple as pushing two buttons and moving the arm to the final position.

The message was clear that technology is needed for future business growth. MANTEC is a local resource for manufacturers to embrace technology.

Meet the Ambassadors: Sue Posey

S

ue’s responsibilities as Senior Practice Manager at Family First Health are to provide leadership and oversight to the George Street Medical office. The medical office team, comprised of physicians, mid-level providers, LPN’s, MA’s, medical receptionists, behavioral health specialists, patient care coordinator, nutritionist and a dietician, all work together to achieve patient centered care and the delivery of excellent customer service.

Over the past 37 years, Sue has served in various positions within Family First Health. During this time, the organization has grown from 15 to 165 employees and they currently care for approximately 10,000 patients at the George Street Center office.

Sue has volunteered for special YCEA events such as the Draw Down & Silent Auction, Golf Outing and Business after Hours.

What she enjoys most is interacting with the dedicated York County Economic Alliance employees and fellow Ambassadors.

She believes it is such a great atmosphere and has been blessed to meet some wonderful people along the way.

Sue graduated from York College of Pennsylvania in 1993 as a part-time, non-traditional student working full-time. In 1994, she sat for her registry exam and became a RHIA, Registered Health Information Administrator.

In 1998, Sue completed her Master’s Degree in Human Resource Development from Villanova University.

Main Street Hanover Events By: Justine Trucksess, York County Economic Alliance

Main Street Hanover Featuring Geocaching!

H

anover Geo Trail Geocaching, the international treasure-hunting game, can be done right here in Hanover! Now we are excited to bring you our 2nd trail this Spring!

Main Street Hanover has plotted its very own treasure map, known as the Hanover GeoTrail. The trail includes over 20 different cache locations throughout the downtown and greater Hanover area. Our new trail after its launch, will have new caches to offer people in a variety of fun new places!

What is GeoCaching? Modern adventurers can use their GPS devices to navigate the path to elusive ‘caches’, which are hidden containers holding a logbook for the hunters to sign. GeoCaches are hidden in landmarks, public parks and even parking lots and businesses. All geocaches are officially registered with www.geocaching. com. Participants will need to register on the website to retrieve coordinates and other location information.

Registration on www.geocaching.com is free.

A GeoCache app can be downloaded on smart phones, enabling the cacher to navigate to caches, and find additional caches nearby. Before setting out to find the caches, you will need an official passport booklet.

Passports are free and can be downloaded from the Hanover Chamber’s website, or by visiting the Hanover Chamber/ Main Street Hanover office.

Each cache will contain a unique code to be used in your passport as proof of finding the cache. Cachers who complete 85% of the trail or more will receive a commemorative coin, made specifically for the geo trail, which features the Main Street Hanover logo. There is no set deadline for completion, and participants may collect their coin until the supply runs out.

Shred Event – Continental Paper Grading Co.

April 30 / 10 a.m The York County Economic Alliance, in partnership with AARP Pennsylvania and Continental Paper Grading, is hosting a shred event. The event is free and open to the general public. Attendees are invited to drive through the facility to drop off and shred their documents in an industrial sized shredder. In addition, attendees are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items to benefit the York County Food Bank.

The 2016 PEL-Issues Forum features the Civic Leadership Education Program presented by John Maurer of Penn State Data Center. There was mostly bad news for Pennsylvania municipalities in recently released indicators for income levels, housing values, poverty rates, education and more. Over the past 10 years, many more municipalities saw declines in those areas than saw improvements.

This presentation shows how York compares to other cities and the surrounding region on these important measurers and how they impact the region’s health and sustainability.

At the Legislative Luncheon, business people and legislators from Washington, Harrisburg and York discuss the importance of fostering a healthy business climate. The luncheon draws York’s political elite and socially-conscious residents.
