As Fall approaches I want to look back on a very busy summer and some epic events that started with Art on the Avenue. A big thank you to Emily Branch, our event coordinator, and the Art Plus team for helping make this Art on the Ave the biggest and best festival we have ever had in West Reading. With more artists and our Plein Air event bringing in artists from around the region it was truly an amazing day. I love Art on the Ave because it helps showcase our beautiful area and allows these very talented artists to explore and see everything Berks County has to offer. I hear from Russ Slocum who runs the Plein Air event that a number of artists came back to paint the beautiful landscape and architecture here in Berks and because it is such a relaxed and fun event. Relaxed and fun, that is the goal for all of our events. The summer also saw a Sidewalk Sale, the West Reading Tavern French Fry Festival, our 2nd Fridays continue to grow and Sunday was fun day with the Farmers Market and new places to eat including Fresh and Noodl. The Avenue also expanded a little with Trish’s Specialty Cheese Cakes opening on N. 6th Ave as well. With all of our Penn Ave locations filled, we are looking for more businesses to open on 6th Ave as we look to grow our business district and open more shops on 6th and Reading Avenue. Fall Fest is right around the corner (September 17th) and this event is all about food, music and festive beverages. Our musical line up this year includes A.D. Blanco – Based in Athens, Georgia, their summer tour stop in West Reading left a great impression on them and the band left quite an impression on West Reading! Dylan Zangwill – Best known as a contestant on America’s Got Talent (Season 16 / 2021) at the age of 14. Flux Capacitor – the newly reunited popular Reading band will play their first hometown show in close to 5 years. The borough of Wyomissing, in partnership with Tandem Mobility, has launched a new bike
Reading CollegeTowne, and its newly established engineering school, the John R. Post School of Engineering, recognizing the school’s largest philanthropic gift in its 63-year history, given by John R. and Maryanne Post. The university launched the CollegeTowne initiative in Reading in late 2019. Since its launch, Alvernia purchased the newly renamed John R. Post Center at Reading CollegeTowne, a 240,000-square-foot living and learning facility at 401 Penn Street in downtown Reading, and completed the first phase of a $20 million renovation and retrofitting project.

J ust a Wyo kid who is proud as hell of West Reading: that’s how Dr. Mark Dougherty, owner of Penn Avenue Dental, described himself when we met at his 645 Penn Ave office (you know the place – one of West Reading’s most iconic frog sculptures is on display there.) I would take it a step further and call him a transformer of not only smiles, but also of opportunities in our bustling downtown business district through his involvement with the West Reading Community Revitalization Foundation (WRCRF.) Promoting good health and a great business environment in West Reading has been his mission for decades. Having lived his whole life in the Wyomissing area, Mark is a 1973 graduate of Wyomissing High School. His father, Dr. Harry Dougherty, was also a dentist and in fact started Penn Avenue Dental in 1953. Does this mean Mark was raised with the expectation of following in his father’s footsteps? Not at all. His first love was photography, and he is proud to have been, along with his best friend growing up, Fred Mogel, a photographer for the Colophon , Wyomissing High School’s yearbook. With an older sister who was an operatic singer who attended Julliard, Mark clearly had artistic genes. But following high school, Mark was encouraged by his father and his uncle, who was an executive with Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh, to pursue a career in banking and business. He reluctantly attended Penn State Berks campus, and after the first year told his father he wanted to quit; the thought of going to the huge PSU main campus the following year didn’t feel like a good fit. His father encouraged him to continue his schooling, so he transferred to Albright where he studied economics and business administration.

But a funny thing happened: Mark realized his true passion was working with his hands; he craved creativity and freedom of choice. Dentistry was being revolutionized by new techniques such as implants, veneers, and other cosmetics. Mark began to take science classes in the summer, so that by the time he made it to the Temple University School of Dentistry, he had 170 undergraduate credits in a variety of subjects. In fact, his advisor at Temple was shocked to learn he had chosen dentistry instead of the MBA program. This would not be the first time someone was surprised to find out Mark was a “dentist trapped inside a CEO’s body.” Years later while golfing with Jim Tucker, an executive with Palmer Candy, Jim asked what Mark did for a living. Mark told him he was a dentist and Jim responded, “No, really, what do you do??” He might just be a little bit more “personality-plus” than most dentists you’ve met.
Speaking of sparkling personalities and transformation, Mark’s world would soon change when he met fellow Wyomissing grad, Wendy Yocum, at a neighborhood gathering at the Mogel’s house in the ‘80s. Although the two grew up a block and a half apart, Wendy was 8 years his junior, so they didn’t really know each other. However, her best friend lived next door to Mark, so Wendy couldn’t help but notice (with a certain degree of alarm!) the gang of teenage “derelicts” who frequently hung out at the Dougherty household when she was a kid. Flash forward and Wendy was home visiting from NYC, where she was a buyer/designer for B Altman. Mark, who was in his residency at the former Community General Hospital by then, saw her at the party and asked Fred to switch seats so he could sit next to her. The next time she came home for a visit, Mark saw Wendy outside her parents’ house and decided to ask her to go on a date. It was, he will admit, the most boring date ever…just basically stopping by a friend’s house. But a dull first date did not stop this romance from blossoming; one year later Mark and Wendy were married and had their honeymoon in Rideau in Canada, a place they have visited every anniversary since. Married life found Mark working for his father in the dental business, and Wendy running the former Clothes Tree.

Fifteen years later, Mark took over the business, and Wendy now works in the practice with him. They have a son, Mac (age 29), and a daughter, Morgan (age 26), and recently celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary. Mark first became involved with the WRCRF around the year 2000, about three years into its founding, through fellow dentist Dr. Robert Shuttlesworth. At that time, Penn Avenue was not the business district it is today; it was plagued with poor lighting, sidewalks and buildings in disrepair, frequent car accidents, and residential areas struggling with crime and

His biggest goal now is mentoring new volunteers, including someone to take his place when it is his time to move on.

The WRCRF was made up of a group of residents, business owners, and community leaders who coordinated with the borough to make improvements to infrastructure, create a continuity along the Avenue, and help and encourage property owners to spruce up their facades. When Robert moved from West Reading, Mark took his place on the foundation, holding many positions before becoming president seven years ago. At that time, he also took Dr. Shuttleworth’s place as Chairman of the Department of Dentistry at the former Reading Health System (now Tower Health,) where he has been involved in many initiatives in addition to dentistry, including committees on community benefits and patient care. He has also taken an active role in the oncology department, with a primary focus on head and neck cancers.
Mark is particularly proud of the work done by the WRCRF during the Covid shutdown in 2020. The foundation went from meeting once a month to holding virtual meetings every week, aggressively looking for ways to save businesses during this difficult time. Even though 8 businesses closed, 21 others opened, including businesses owned by women and people of color. Penn Avenue storefronts were nearly 100% occupied by 2021 – at a time when many other cities were like ghost towns.

In his limited free time, Mark plays tennis, goes bass fishing (loves the lake, hates the beach) and enjoys trivia and thinking games (loves Scrabble, hates Monopoly). He loves “historical stuff,” recently reading books on the history of Atlantic City (where his family spent time when he was a child) and the speeches of Winston Churchill. This three-time Covid survivor has some simple secrets to happiness: be honest, stand up for yourself when required, embrace the zig-zagging path life will often take (don’t quit!), and stay connected to people you admire – just like he did during the pandemic with those extra WRCRF meetings and daily 8am Tower Health meetings. And of course…don’t forget to smile.

Berks Arts was challenged by the pandemic during the previous years, and Heimbecker jumped into action in his new position just before a flurry of activity and the return to live, in-person events began. As Heimbecker explains, the mission of Berks Arts is to Inspire, Engage, and Unite the community through the arts. Although he says that mission comes across in a variety of ways, the heart of the organization is the support of the community, both economic and otherwise, through unique collaborations to provide a thriving art scene.

At Refillable Goods, customers will find hair care, skincare, hygiene, and household cleaning products plus accessories. The brands are toxic-free and made with plant-based ingredients that have low-waste or compostable packaging. Liquid and powder products are sold by the ounce and customers can refill any container they may already have at home.
Born as a delivery service and pop-up shop at festivals and flea markets in July 2020, Refillable Goods’ owners Jaylene Torres and Paolo Cevallos say they were encouraged by their customers and community to open a storefront at their dream location on Penn Avenue in May 2021. The partners believe the culture, community, and Avenues location are ideal for any small businesses to thrive but are especially appropriate for their niche concept.
Becoming a vegan almost five years ago inspired Paola to learn more about what the food industry keeps hidden from the public. She became aware that many industries have unethical and wasteful production practices.

Paola says, “My goal with Refillable Goods is to raise awareness and encourage people to think about the lifecycle of a product: the resources it takes to produce it, what happens to it when you are done using it, and how every step of the process affects people and the planet.”
Why Refillable Goods? Jalyene explains that her son was born in 2019 and developed dry, itchy, and inflamed skin diagnosed as eczema. An unsuccessful round of recommended treatments to sooth his skin led Jaylene to discover that many of the baby products contained skin irritants and cancerous-causing ingredients. Research showed her that regulations allow cosmetics to be marketed as natural but contain no plant-based ingredients, and may even have the ability to cause health concerns. Jaylene says, “In the past couple years I’ve grown more conscious of the items I buy, their ingredients, and the packaging. My motivation for launching Refillable Goods is to ensure that my family, friends, and community have access to safe products free of unnecessary toxins.”
Jaylene: “Taqueria Comalli for sure! I love Mexican food and being a vegetarian, I have many options here; they are always delicious, consistent and fulfilling. I’d love to learn how they make their Fungi Medley.” Paola: “Spoonful Thai Bistro because I love how most of their menu can be veganized. Their food never disappoints!”

A Message from the Mayor…. LIVE, WORK, PLAY!
t has been an honor and a pleasure to serve as the Mayor of West Reading for the last 8 months. Although I spend much of my time leading our first-class West Reading Police Department and working behind the scenes for the betterment of the community, I consider myself a cheerleader and the #1 fan of the Borough! It has been so exciting to work in a larger capacity after serving on Borough Council, an experience that helped me step into my new role with understanding and confidence.

When I moved to the area back in 2009, I was drawn to West Reading’s upbeat atmosphere which prompted me to purchase a house here in 2010. I was struck by the tight-knit nature of the community – neighbors knowing and caring about each other - and I could walk everywhere! The renaissance of the Avenue was well underway at that time, but who knew what was to come… Some of you may have read the book Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. Chatty Monks, one of our premier local breweries, has embraced the verbiage “Eat, Drink, Love.” If I were to make a slogan for West Reading, it would be “Live, Work, Play!” Do you realize this borough of 4,500 people is only .7 square miles, but provides everything you could possibly need to “Live Your West Life.” Okay, I borrowed that one from our awesome West Reading Community Revitalization Foundation…you may have noticed we are big on slogans around here!
Living here means that you have access to almost everything you could possibly need: public transportation; coffee shops; yoga and fitness studios; The West Reading Drug Store; a local dentist, Dr. Mark Dougherty (and please check out his profile in West Reading Peeps;) Tower Health, our local hospital system, along with the required supplies from Scrubs and Beyond and Superior Oxygen & Medical Equipment; hair salons and barber shops; The West Reading farmers market for fresh produce; and soon-to-come Kimberton Whole Foods within a walkable distance in our neighboring community of Wyomissing. You will also be happy to know West Reading has a borough council and committees that are dedicated to continuing the positive trajectory West Reading is on. In addition to our residential neighborhood vibe, we have a robust greaterdowntown business atmosphere and many companies based right here in the borough for employment opportunities. With so many hospitality businesses and events/ festivals, there is no end to the entertainment. Whether it’s breweries, boutiques, restaurants, cocktail venues, or live music –there is always an opportunity to unwind with friends – or solo. Fall Fest and other street festivals throughout the year bring thousands of visitors who love to support our little borough. Even dogs are welcome in many of our establishments. Our recreation department is ever-growing and offering more and more opportunities for fun and fellowship – from group bike rides like Rides ‘N Vibes to music in our park system to fun for the kids all year round. Speaking of bikes – if you don’t have your own, we now have a new bike-share program located next to the West Reading Pool, thanks to a cooperative effort with Wyomissing’s borough manager, Michelle Bare, and a Wyoways grant. Overall, I am incredibly excited to not only see how far we have come as a borough, but to also be a bigger part of its future. I feel grateful to work with an amazing council – all of whom truly love the borough – to make sure West Reading keeps moving in a positive direction. T he Reading Hospital Road Run, hosted by The Friends of Reading Hospital, will again return to West Reading this fall, on the morning of Sunday, October 16. The 5K course will race along the beautiful and scenic tree-lined streets of West Reading and Wyomissing. Runners looking for an added challenge will enjoy a course through West Reading, Wyomissing, and the City of Reading when they register for the half marathon. All race events will start and finish on Seventh Avenue adjacent to the Reading Hospital in West Reading. “We brought this event back to West Reading in 2019 with great success, went totally virtual in 2020 due to the pandemic, and had a scaled back, but well-attended, version of the event in 2021,” said Beth Kohl, 2022 Reading Hospital Road Run Committee Chair and The Friends of Reading Hospital board member. “For 2022, the Road Run Committee is looking to bring back all of the Road Run elements that the community and hospital have loved for many years. The Friends hope everyone will save the date to run with us on October 16.”

The Warm Handoff program is a partnership between Reading Hospital Emergency Department (ED) and the Council On Chemical Abuse (COCA). The program provides Certified Recovery Staff in the ED 24 hours a day. Individuals who come to the Emergency Department suffering from the effects of opioid or other substance abuse meet with a recovery support specialist who can arrange for immediate admission to a detox or drug and alcohol treatment program, which can save lives and help people get on the road to recovery.

B erks Youth Chorus is pleased to announce Sarah Kreider as the new Director of the Choristers, BYC’s youngest ensemble for singers in the third and fourth grades. A beloved music teacher of Schuylkill Valley Elementary School, Ms. Kreider will bring expertise, passion and energy to the Chorus’s youngest singers. She holds a Master of Music in Music Education with an Autism Concentration from Boston Conservatory at Berklee and serves as assistant music director for the musicals at Schuylkill Valley High School.
From Student to Teacher: Sarah Kreider Returns to Berks Youth Chorus As Choristers’ Director
“Sarah’s return has already brought a new level of excitement within the Chorus,” attests Sam Barge, who directs the BYC Chorale and MasterSingers. “Every organization dreams that its students will return to give back to the next generation. It is such a gift that Sarah will connect our youngest singers to our past and demonstrate the role that our community can play in their lives.” Kreider reflected on the impact BYC had in her life: “It honestly feels surreal. When I decided to go into music education I think I always had it in the back of my mind that it would be really fun to have a chance to come back to BYC, but I didn’t know if the opportunity would present itself… I am honored that I’ve been given this opportunity, and I’m so happy that I get to be a part of continuing the legacy of BYC and providing the opportunity for more students to have the same kinds of amazing choral experiences I had. “I had so many positive experiences with my BYC directors when I was younger, and I only hope I can have the same kind of impact on my future singers that those directors had on my life.” Sarah Kreider joins BYC’s staff at a unique moment in the organization’s history. The Chorus just celebrated its thirtieth anniversary last spring. In 2020, the Chorus witnessed the retirement of former Executive Director Dail Richie after decades of leadership. These milestones came during the backdrop of the pandemic, which required a combination of virtual and hybrid singing, mask requirements, social distancing and a variety of other measures. Despite these challenges, BYC’s is planning for a ‘normal’ 2022-2023 year.
Ms. Kreider is an alumna of Berks Youth Chorus herself. She sang in the chorus for ten years and interned at many BYC summer camps. “BYC was a huge part of my life growing up,” says Kreider. “Being a member of BYC is why I ended up on the path to be a music teacher. BYC is where my love of choral music began, and that love has also led me to form lifelong friendships. To me, BYC represents musicality mixed with community and fun!”
Sarah Kreider’s ensemble, the BYC Choristers, have been fully virtual since the pandemic began. They will return to in-person singing this month for the BYC Summer Sing on July 25-29. “I am looking forward to meeting a new group of singers and forming a choral community together,” says Kreider. “I am so excited to be working with kiddos from all around the county and having a tight knit group brought together by a shared loved of music and singing. I can’t wait to get started and for us to all grow, learn, and sing together!”

Ever the traveler, Rene had also taken many trips to Turkey. He brought some loose-leaf tea back for Gigi once, and she fell in love with it. She knew they had to feature teas on their menu. They began with Turkish teas but have since expanded to Chinese, German, and Canadian blends. Everything they serve is all-natural, and just like with their coffee, they can talk to you about origins of the tea and how water, temperature, and steep time will affect the taste.
One thing that sets this café apart from others nearby is their paninis. With the goal of representing multiple cultures under one roof, they designed a fun and versatile panini menu (which is available all day!). Taking inspiration from their time in Florida, there is a Cuban sandwich. There is an Argentine-inspired choripan and a Dominican-inspired creation by Rene himself.
There are vegetarian options and even a salted chocolate and brie panini! All the paninis are served with potato sticks, a common snack in Gigi’s native Puerto Rico.
Deciding they wanted to run a coffee shop, they dove right in. They completed a course about coffee and became experts. They source their coffee from a local supplier, but the beans come from all over the world. Gigi and Rene can tell you all about where your coffee was grown, and how soil, water, altitude, and a variety of other factors will affect the taste.
W hen Gigi and Rene Ruiz met in high school, they could not have imagined the journey life would take them on – but they always let themselves be guided by their faith. They moved from New York City to central Pennsylvania to Florida, and along the way married and had three children together. While living in Florida, they felt called to return to Pennsylvania, to become involved in a community here and help people as much as possible. In an unlikely and daring step during a pandemic, they connected with a local pastor online, sold their house in Florida, and invested in a lucky property find close to the Avenue.

The owners, since moving back, have become active in their church. Their pastor was just starting out during the pandemic, and they wanted to offer him support. They serve as youth leaders and they counsel married couples. Their faith has remained strong through all the many challenges the pandemic has presented. Their name, Ezekiel 47, refers to a Bible verse. The verse details the course of a river flowing from the temple, which Ezekiel steps into; the river allows him to understand where his faith must take him. The verse also mentions the river providing for trees that bear fruit for food and leaves for medicine. The Ruizes felt a connection to their experience of being called back to Pennsylvania, and were also reminded of the health and comfort given by their teas. The café’s hours at the time of this writing are Monday-Friday 8am-6pm and Saturday 8am-4pm, but the hours change a lot with seasons as well as events on the Avenue. Seeing and bringing out deep beauty from natural materials has been LeAnn Wolf’s passion since she was a little girl scouting for special stones in the hills of South Dakota. Precious metals and stones have been common facets in countless thousands of rings, necklaces, pendants, bracelets and earring pairs that LeAnn has created since 1999. Yet each is a one-of-a-kind design. Fan out her latest creations at any given time, and you feel like you’ve opened a treasure chest that’s also a testament to boundless imagination. Her design elements can range from Eastern philosophy to hobo symbols. Metals range from copper to gold, stones from amethyst to diamonds. She works with molten glass and fiery hot metal, as well as cold rolling mills. She has cutting edge jewelry-making equipment, while also applying secrets of ancient craftsmanship.

One of her newest passions in keumboo, a Japanese technique for bonding gold to silver. “The silver must be pure,” LeAnn explains. “Sterling has additives to enhance its gloss and rigidity, which is an advantage in tableware, but not in fusing gold. For that, the silver must be 100% pure.” LeAnn is planning to offer a keumboo demonstration during the opening reception of her solo exhibit in mid-October.

For his November featured exhibit at Art Plus Gallery, Brian makes a triumphant return to basics. His show will focus on images of his Berks County hometown of Reading, Pennsylvania and the medium that he started with back in 2003: black and white photography. All of the B&W photos headlining November’s exhibit were taken in the last two years in Berks County. More than half are in the city of Reading, where Brian lives. “I’ve always liked the power and drama that black and white photography is capable of producing,” Brian explains. “You use tone and texture to capture the essence of your subject without the potential distraction of color.”
DECEMBER FEATURED EXHIBIT: METAMORPHOSIS
It starts as a block of wood. And not necessarily a very pretty one, to some. But to Tim Kravatz, the cracks, flaws and discolorations are an invitation to draw out extraordinary inner beauty. “We live in an imperfect world that constantly emphasizes perfection. I look for the throwaway woods containing cracks and flaws, and use those characteristics as a centerpiece in almost all of my work,” Tim explains. “It’s the flaws and imperfections that can bring out unique beauty. “Looking at the raw wood, I might see potential, but I usually don’t start with a pre-conceived vision of the finished piece. I follow what the wood reveals to me as it turns. I let the wood talk to me.” Tim listens well. Since he joined Art Plus in 2019, his craftsmanship has increasingly reflected more elements of fine artistry. There’s more sculpting, piercing, carving and staining in his hollow forms, which have grown in size as well as imagination. Even his smaller pieces continue to evolve. “During the holidays, my bracelets, birdhouses and ornaments tend to sell as fast as I make them, but I’ve never been tempted to mass produce,” Tim says. “Each piece of wood has its own story to tell, and I’m going to take the time to listen to it.”

Brian’s new black and white work will be the show’s main draw, but fans of his far-flung photographic odysseys will appreciate also seeing a section that includes new color images along with some of his all-time favorites. The exhibit will also be the first public unveiling of a new dimension in Brian’s artistic repertoire: abstract art. O ne of the great things about living in or visiting West Reading is that just a short trip across the Penn Street Bridge opens up even more possibilities for entertainment — for instance: the annual Reading Blues Fest, presented by Berks Arts! This celebration of traditional blues, and its contemporary subgenres, will take place at the DoubleTree by Hilton Reading from Thursday, Nov. 17 through Sunday, Nov. 20. Guests can hang out at downtown Reading’s award-winning hotel for an evening, an entire day or more, enjoying concerts, blues-themed lunches and brunches and late-night after-parties.
Headliners for this year’s festival include Tab Benoit with The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Sugaray Rayford with Vanessa Collier, Eric Gales with Dawn Tyler Watson, The Blood Brothers: Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia, BC Blue, The Dave Mell Blues Band, Dave Keyes, Dave Keller Trio, and more. These artists represent 24 BMA awards, including three B.B. King Entertainer of the Year honors — Benoit in 2007 and 2012, and Rayford in 2020. This year, Reading Blues Fest has added a special Community Kickoff Concert on Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Reading Liederkranz, starting at 6 p.m. at the club on Mount Penn overlooking Reading. Performing will be Clarence Spady & The Electric City Band featuring The Berks Horns, and Busker Incognito Trio hosting Crossroads Blues Jam before Spady takes the stage.
The rest of the concerts will be held in the DoubleTree’s Grand Ballroom and in its nightclub, Cheers.

Although, ReadingFilmFEST is the film office’s biggest event of the year, the organization provides so much more. ReadingFilm provides year-round programming leading up to the international film festival that is designed to engage, entertain, and educate. As a new independent non-profit 501(c)(3), the organization plans to re-build the ReadingFilm office with the mission of creating a vibrant film production community for Berks County. This work not only enhances the arts community, but also creates new economic development opportunities for Greater Reading. The region offers filmmakers a plethora of location choices, a new film studio, ReadingFilm Studios, and significant savings on goods and services over larger cities in the region. Art on the Avenue kicked off with Safe Berks Walk for No More. The day began a bit windy and cloudy, but the sun finally appeared. The booth spaces were completely sold out for the first time ever!
