Innovation FUTURE OF THE

An Immersive Dive into NeoPangea

A building along South Fifth Avenue in West Reading catches the eye with its bold decorations and the name “NeoPangea” displayed across the front. Upon stepping inside, it’s like entering another world—from the custom office pods with immaculately designed themes, inspired by Indiana Jones or Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, to the research projects present and on display. It is a fusion of technology and artistry where innovation and imagination collide. This is the home of NeoPangea HQ, a national digital creative agency pushing the boundaries of storytelling in the modern age.

The Art of Innovation

NeoPangea has built a reputation for transforming the way people interact with digital experiences. From interactive exhibits and game-based learning tools to augmented and virtual reality applications, the company thrives on pushing creative and technological boundaries.

“Innovation means never getting too comfortable. If we see a tech trend emerging, we don’t just adopt it—we challenge ourselves to use it in a way no one else has,” Emily Rhinehart, NeoPangea’s Director of Client Strategy, said.

This philosophy has led to projects across education, entertainment and beyond. One notable example is their work with Harry Potter: The ExhibitionTM, where they were part of the team that developed an immersive exhibit incorporating Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. Visitors receive a wristband that interacts with the media, creating a personalized journey through the experience.

“RFID technology has been around for years, in our phones, in our watches and our credit cards, and we see enormous benefits utilizing it in the experiential space,” Rhinehart said. “When you attend Harry Potter: The ExhibitionTM, you register at a kiosk and receive a custom RFID bracelet. As you move through the exhibit, every interactive encountered greets you by name.”

Embracing Risk & Experimentation

At the core of NeoPangea’s success is a willingness to take calculated risks. According to Rhinehart, their most innovative projects often begin with a simple question: “Wouldn’t it be cool if…?

“Some of our most successful projects started as wild ideas that, at first, didn’t seem feasible,” she said. “We believe in experimentation, in embracing the unknown. If you’re not failing occasionally, you’re not really innovating.”

This mindset has allowed NeoPangea to lead in immersive storytelling, using cutting-edge technology to blend physical and digital realities. From Augmented Reality for National Geographic to interactive installations for The Franklin Institute, to a twoplayer Virtual Reality experience at The Kennedy Space Center, the company continues to redefine audience engagement. NeoPangea has also worked on several local projects, most notably “Nefrina: A Living Hologram” at Reading Public Museum, as well as a current project with Berks History Center assisting with its Master Plan to update the storytelling throughout the entire museum.

Technology as a Storytelling Tool For NeoPangea, technology is not just a tool—it’s an integral part of

the storytelling process. Rhinehart emphasized that innovation means using technology meaningfully, not just chasing trends.

“We don’t just throw technology at a problem and hope it works,” she said. “Every decision we make is driven by the story we want to tell or the experience we want to create. The tech serves the vision, not the other way around. And really excellent tech solutions are hidden expertly so that a visitor is more focused on the story itself than on how it’s delivered.”

Its work with RFID not only enhances interaction but also improves accessibility. Personalized accommodations can be embedded into these systems, ensuring that all users have an inclusive experience tailored to their needs.

Features like high-contrast text and captions support visitors with visual or hearing impairments.

“RFID technology has the capability to serve up an experience tailored to the unique needs of the visitor,” Rhinehart said. “I think I can speak for everyone on the team to say, we’re so passionate about accessibility, and we want to harness technology to create the best experiences for everyone.”

Collaboration & Creative Synergy

Beyond technology, NeoPangea thrives on a culture of collaboration. The company’s greatest successes stem from a team of diverse minds working together to bring ambitious ideas to life.

“We’re lucky to have a team of brilliant minds who all bring something different to the table,” Rhinehart said. “Everyone has a unique perspective and that diversity of thought is what fuels our creativity.”

NeoPangea’s cross-disciplinary approach results in experiences that are both innovative and immersive. Whether working with museums, media companies, commercial architects, or educational institutions, NeoPangea leverages interdisciplinary expertise to craft unique, immersive experiences.

The Future of Innovation

Looking ahead, Rhinehart sees endless potential for evolution. NeoPangea is exploring advancements in artificial intelligence, machine learning and spatial computing. But amidst the evolution of technology, its guiding principle remains: challenge the norm and push creative boundaries.

“Technology will always change, but our core philosophy remains the same—never stop experimenting, never stop pushing,” Rhinehart said. “We’re constantly evolving, and that’s what makes this work so exciting and fulfilling.”

With a growing portfolio of innovative projects, NeoPangea is redefining the future of digital storytelling. As it continues to break new ground, its influence on the industry is undeniable, ensuring a future that is more interactive, immersive and boundary-pushing than ever before.

edge CUTTINGCultivation

Where the soil is rich, so are the ideas. From its home in Kutztown, Pa., Rodale Institute is growing more than crops; they are growing solutions for the future of farming.

Rodale Institute, recently named one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies of 2025, is continuing to shape the future of agriculture through its commitment to regenerative organic practices. With a legacy that spans over 77 years, the non-profit has become a catalyst for changes in farming practices and food production globally.

continued on next page >

“We have proven that organic farming is not only viable, but essential to humanity’s survival,” said Jessica Student, Chief Impact Officer at Rodale Institute.

That gives insight into one of the world’s most pressing challenges: building a global food system that prioritizes both human and environmental health. At Rodale, the belief is that organic farming innovations are the key to ensuring the longevity of agriculture.

“We believe organic farming innovations are key to future-proofing agriculture, and we’re committed to supporting farmers and agricultural communities,” said Student.

Rodale’s impact is grounded in its research. The work it does has informed national organic standards and continues to do so through a team of scientists conducting research across the United States and Europe. There is a consistent stream of “actionable” data available to producers of all sizes available in realtime, which helps those producers improve practices faster.

But that is not where its research ends.

“We have proven that organic farming is not only viable, but essential to humanity’s survival.”

“The Institute has also expanded its capacity to serve producers anywhere in America by establishing five strategically located regional resource centers. These physical centers are hubs for geographically relevant research and education,” said Student.

This commitment to accessibility extends to partnerships with colleges and universities, with the goal of broadening access to practical scientific research and regenerative organic farmer training programs that result in students being workforce-ready in under 12 months.

Rodale also offers a specific track for U.S. Veterans, first-generation farmers and former conventional farmers, all

of which help the Institute meet the nation’s need for skills-based training that is accessible to individuals of all socioeconomic and educational walks of life.

That is not where its dedication ends. Through Rodale’s Organic Consultancy division, there is further support provided to major agricultural states like Pennsylvania. This is done by offering multi-year, on-the-ground transition services from conventional to regenerative organic practices, which is completely free of charge, removing barriers that farmers worldwide often face.

“Pennsylvania is also a powerhouse producer in the organic sector and

— Jessica Student, Chief Impact Officer at Rodale Institute

ranks third in the nation for organic sales,” Student said. “With strong partners in the Governor’s office, Pennsylvania’s House and Senate, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, and the private sector with Pennsylvania-based supporters such as Bell & Evans, the commonwealth is the ideal home for Rodale Institute’s headquarters.”

These efforts are key to Rodale’s philosophy, as well as its dedication to Pennsylvania. The Institute remains deeply rooted in Kutztown.

“Rodale Institute was born in Berks County, and we continue to call Kutztown home,” said Student. “The Institute’s longest-running research trial, the Farming System’s Trial (FST), is based at our Main Campus in Kutztown and applies real-world practices and rigorous scientific analysis to document the different impacts of organic and conventional grain cropping systems. FST’s over 40 years of accumulated data and findings make it one of the most

consequential studies of organic agriculture anywhere.”

Rodale’s leadership in these sectors of agriculture is sustained by a wide variety of supporters. From the support in the Pennsylvania government to Fortune 500 companies, there is a wide net of support around the research and work that Rodale does for agriculture.

“The public and private support of the Institute is a testament to the need for our work in the American agricultural sector as well as the effectiveness of both our programming and illuminating

scientific research,” Student said.

This support has not gone unnoticed by Rodale, who has launched a “Seasonal Organic Dinner series.” This series will enable investors and local donors to learn more about the work that Rodale does.

“We couldn’t do this work without our donors’ investments and every dollar counts,” Student said.

For more information, visit Rodale’s website at rodaleinstitute.org.

Treasure HIDDEN TROVE

Why Greater Reading is a thrifter’s dream destination

Greater Reading is a treasure trove for thrift lovers! This region hosts a vibrant thrifting scene that stands out. With over 40 thrift and consignment stores scattered throughout, the region offers greater variety and ample affordability. When compared to nearby counties, this area is tops. Lancaster County has about 30 thrift shops, while Lebanon County offers roughly 15, which makes Berks County an easy to choose destination for bargain hunters and vintage enthusiasts alike!

What sets Greater Reading apart is its blend of history, culture and community spirit. Reading, the county seat, was once a booming industrial hub known for its railroad and textile production. The area’s manufacturing past contributes to a steady stream of vintage workwear, antiques and unique home decor items finding their way into local thrift stores like CommunityAid, located on Allentown Pike in Temple. You may even snag a piece of Pennsylvania’s history, discovering the county’s roots in Pennsylvania Dutch heritage as you shop for secondhand finds.

Whether you’re looking for history, home decor, vintage fashion or everyday essentials, the area’s thrift stores offer endless possibilities. To make the most of your thrift trips, here are some insider tips and tricks.

Start by creating a wish list before you visit. Having a plan helps you focus on what you truly need or want. This simple step can save you time and money while preventing impulse buying. Looking for your favorite clothing brands, kitchen gadgets or gently used furniture? Write it down!

Another tip? Visit thrift stores regularly. Inventory changes often, so frequent visits increase your chances of finding hidden gems. Timing matters, too. Early mornings and weekdays can mean fewer crowds and the newest selection.

Stay up to date on extra savings by following your favorite secondhand retailers on social media. The local thrift stores you love are posting regularly about flash sales, discounts or special promotions. For example, CommunityAid in Temple offers four discount days that save shoppers 50% off select tags each week. Shop and

save on its most popular days like Wednesday’s Family Day for everyone, or Thursday’s Education Appreciation Day, for students, teachers and school staff.

Get creative, discover the potential and uncover your style. Thrifting can be practical or imaginative. Let these tips help your thrift trip work for you.

TYLER ECKERT

Kutztown University of Pennsylvania | East Penn Manufacturing Intern

Where are you from originally? Harleysville, Pennsylvania

What inspired you to pursue an internship in Greater Reading? After leaving the town that I had spent my entire life in to come to college, I quickly fell in love with the community of Kutztown and the surrounding areas. I am proud of the life I have made at college in just a few short years, and I am also proud of following in my mother’s footsteps as she is a Kutztown alumna. Because of these reasons, I wanted to further plant my roots here, which is why I was overjoyed to have the chance to work in Lyons, as it is just 10 minutes away from campus. I work in the procurement division at East Penn Manufacturing, and it has offered me both the chance to begin my professional career, and to confirm that I am majoring in a field that I enjoy.

If someone is visiting the Greater Reading area, what hidden gem would you recommend they check out? I would recommend checking out Snuzzles. It has a great atmosphere and fantastic food for its low prices. Sizeable, restaurantquality, chicken sandwiches for under 10 dollars are quite hard to find nowadays, and Snuzzles has them and more!

Penn State Berks | Berks County Medical Society Intern

Where are you from originally? Sai Gon, Vietnam

What inspired you to pursue an internship in Greater Reading? I was drawn to Greater Reading because of the opportunity to intern with the Berks County Medical Society. It’s known as one of the most respected medical organizations in the country, and I really connect with the organization’s mission to serve a diverse community with compassion. That focus on both excellent care and inclusivity made me feel like this would be a meaningful place to learn and grow.

If someone is visiting the Greater Reading area, what hidden gem would you recommend they check out? I would recommend visiting the West Reading area for its amazing food and beverages. I’d also suggest catching a performance at Genesius Theatre. The talented local artists put on incredible shows that give visitors a closer look at the area’s creative spirit and vibrant arts community.

What advice would you give other students considering internships in Greater Reading? The importance of networking cannot be overstated. Every internship opportunity I have had came through the connections I made. Networking can feel difficult as a student, but the people in Greater Reading truly want to support you. That said, it is just as important to show your work ethic and capabilities. Strong relationships will open doors, but your performance is what keeps them open.

CENTER FOR UROLOGIC CARE OF BERKS COUNTY LIVES IN WYOMISSING

Where are you from originally and what brought you to Greater Reading?

I am originally from Philadelphia, and my wife is from Montgomery County. We both have the good fortune of coming from large, tight-knit families. In the years after college we lived in different locations around center city and South Philadelphia. However, by the time I had finished residency our son Owen was turning three and we started to feel a bit cramped by the downtown city life. After interviewing with seemingly every practice in the Philadelphia area, I reached out to the Center for Urologic Care of Berks County. I knew little of the area. We were drawn to the idyllic small town feel of Wyomissing Borough with proximity to West Reading, which we felt had Manayunk-esque vibes. We appreciated the convenience to reside within an hour of larger suburban or urban areas, but also the nearness to lakes, small mountains, hiking and biking trails, and the largest Cabela’s in the United States. Ultimately, the area had the right balance of the resources we enjoyed while living in the city, excellent schools for our children and ease of access to the great outdoors.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about making Greater Reading home?

The variety of cities and towns available means almost anyone can find their “home” here, but it may take some time to look around and experience the area to know what feels best. I think the obvious benefits of the area are the decreased traffic congestion, the ease of access to outdoors activities, the well-established communities and the friendly people who reside here. I think less obvious benefits would be the strong school systems, the highquality healthcare options, the numerous industries with excellent employment opportunities and the central location to nearby “urban centers.”

When family comes to visit, what is one place you must take them and why?

There are many opportunities for excellent hikes in the area, but we have a soft spot for Hawk Mountain. There is an excellent information center that hosts educational programming and has a well-stocked gift shop. The hiking trails range from simple paved paths to strenuous 3-point rock scrambling and everything in between, and the views are quite profound at the higher elevations. There is also ease of access to nearby Blue Rocks campground and the Appalachian trail. It really showcases the natural splendor of the area. It also gives me an opportunity to “stop by” Cabela’s, which I am always looking for an excuse to do.

OWNER OF CARICATURES BY COURTNEY INC. LIVES IN EXETER TOWNSHIP

BURKEY CONSTRUCTION LIVES IN SHILLINGTON

Where are you from originally and what brought you to Greater Reading?

I am from Aurora, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland. My wife and I moved to Greater Reading in the spring of 2003, with the plan of moving to Philadelphia later that fall. However, we fell in love with the people and are still here 22 years later.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about making Greater Reading home?

Putting down long-term roots in a place is a gift, and I am so glad that my family chose to do so in Greater Reading. Our community is filled with special places, traditions and people; when you are here long term, your appreciation for those things only grows stronger. I am extremely excited and optimistic for what lies ahead for Greater Reading, and I believe that it will become only more special to call this place home.

When family comes to visit, what is one place you must take them and why?

I would take them to a Fightin’s game at FirstEnergy Stadium on a fireworks night. There’s great baseball, great entertainment and a beautiful new stadium upgrade for them to enjoy. It’s a place where the community of Greater Reading really shines.

What motivated you to start your business in Greater Reading?

I am a fairly recent transplant from the Philly area. I met my nowhusband in 2019 and moved to his area (Reading) to be closer to him and his job during the pandemic. It only made sense to bring my business to Reading to continue to support my growing family.

How has the local community contributed to the success of your business?

I have noticed that when connecting with other local business owners and community members, there is a genuine enthusiasm to learn about your business, support it, and even hire your services. In a smaller town, word of mouth spreads quickly, allowing my business to grow at an impressive rate.

What’s been your biggest challenge as a business owner here, and how did you overcome it?

Relocating a business over 50 miles and having to start new can be a challenge. However, I’ve discovered that building connections with local businesses and actively participating in community events has been instrumental in overcoming the loss of former local clients.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs in the area?

Embrace the charm of the small-town feel of the Reading area. The community here is warm and welcoming, eager to hear about your business ideas. People are genuinely interested in collaborating, as many have been in your position themselves.

What’s your go-to place or activity in Greater Reading when you need to unwind?

A good friend of mine is a skilled massage therapist, and she runs a delightful studio on Penn Avenue—West Reading Posture and Mobility Studio. Taking an hour to unwind in a peaceful, dimly lit room is absolutely essential every now and then. After all, massages are a must when I sometimes find myself drawing for up to 9 hours straight.

How has the local community contributed to the success of your business?

The Greater Reading community has been absolutely incredible. The support we’ve received has been next level. From our amazing customers, who we often know by name, to partnerships with like-minded businesses and organizations like Retro Fitness, Orange Theory, Borough, local police stations, Healthy Kids Running Series, Girls on the Run and local hospitals— everyone has played a huge role in our success. There’s no better feeling than knowing our work is appreciated and seeing familiar faces walk through the door. Hearing our customers’ stories

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs in the area?

Know your “why”! Make sure it’s something that excites you, gets you out of bed every day, and fuels your soul. Don’t let fear or doubt hold you back and never let anyone dim your light. Building a business isn’t easy—if it were, everyone would do it. But when you believe in and love what you’re doing, even the hardest days are worth it.

OWNER OF HOLISTIC SKATESHOP | LIVES IN MOHNTON

What motivated you to start your business in Greater Reading?

I wanted to make a difference in the lives of Greater Reading skateboarders and the action sports community.

How has the local community contributed to the success of your business? When Greater Reading residents come into the store to purchase apparel or footwear it helps sustain our business to give back to the local skateboard community through events, summer camps, donations and building new skateparks!

What’s been your biggest challenge as a business owner here, and how did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge is bringing skateboarding brands and the culture that are more well known in larger cities to our smaller community. Skateboarding wasn’t the most popular activity when I started the business in 2012, but now it’s accepted and is growing at a rapid pace every year!

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs in the area?

Never give up. My business went through so many ups and downs in the first five years and the skatepark project took 11 years to complete. If I can make it survive, so can other entrepreneurs.

What’s your go-to place or activity in Greater Reading when you need to unwind?

Most people would assume skateboarding at the new park, but I really enjoy hiking in Nolde Forest or Neversink Mountain. They are both amazing parks for our residents.

PROGRAM MANAGER AT THE FOOD TRUST | LIVES IN WEST READING

What brought you back to Greater Reading?

I grew up in New York City, went to college in Vermont, moved to Reading and then moved to Indiana. I’ve lived in a few different places, all cities that varied in population size, and the environments were different. After living in Indiana I made the decision to move back to Reading. My family lives in Reading, and I missed the place I was just starting to get to know. The City of Reading and West Reading really felt like home; it’s the perfect size, and there are always events to keep me busy. I love the feeling of the local community, and Berks County pride. Throughout the years I’ve met people through work, and many of my coworkers have become really great friends. I can’t thank them enough for showing me all the cool places around us. Reading will always have a special place in my heart; it’s where I’ve decided to plant my roots. It’s the place where I met my husband and bought our first home.

How has Greater Reading changed since you first left?

I would say that the Reading area has changed with new businesses popping up in the area. Friends that come to visit really enjoy dining out and child-friendly activities. The events during the summer are a lot of fun; I slowly keep adding more to my calendar.

What do you appreciate most about living here?

I appreciate how close everything is to us—we have plenty of amenities throughout the county; libraries, major hospitals, great farmers markets, the Santander Arena, FirstEnergy Stadium, and the Reading Public Museum! It’s convenient to have an airport near us, and other major cities; my non-PA friends are able to easily come for a visit.

What advice would you give to others considering moving back to the area? If you grew up in the area, and left, consider experiencing Reading as an adult!

What did you miss most about Greater Reading when you were away?

Sense of community. I felt like I belonged; when people would find out I was new to the area, they were eager to share their favorite spots, connect me to their professional network, and invite me to friends’ outings/events. I truly think the Greater Reading area is the right size for me; as an introvert I didn’t get “lost” in the city, compared to other environments I was in.

FREDDY: FOUNDER OF FXV DIGITAL DESIGN

JILL: OWNER OF BERKS PET CARE

LIVES IN SPRING TOWNSHIP

What motivated you to start your business in Greater Reading?

Freddy: I moved here in 2009 from Florida just to be closer to home (NY). I had a family to take care of, and I needed to make a move in order to buy a house and support my wife and two daughters. I took on a job in 2011, was fired in 2016, and that inspired me to finally get out of my basement and become a member of the Greater Reading professional community. I haven’t looked back since.

Jill: Greater Reading is filled with passionate pet owners who treat their pets like family, and I wanted to be a trusted part of that support system.

How has the local community contributed to the success of your business?

Freddy: The local community is why you succeed. Once you gain the trust of the local community, they talk amongst themselves and you start to see a change in your every day. Greater Reading is a very small place, but powerful, and can literally make or break you.

Jill: We love building relationships with pet parents and their pets, and we’re grateful for the referrals, kind reviews and the sense of community that makes our work so rewarding. Whether it’s partnering with local shelters, participating in community events or just seeing familiar faces every day, we couldn’t do it without them!

What’s been your biggest challenge as a business owner here, and how did you overcome it?

Freddy: Finding the right people to grow my business with. I’ve been actively hiring since 2021, but I never really had success until 2023. I realized hiring someone I could vibe with was way more important than a skillset. Not to say they couldn’t have zero experience, but hiring a person you wouldn’t mind hanging out with on a daily basis leads to the creation of awesome content. It’s like any other relationship; when the vibe is there, only great things come out of it.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs in the area?

Jill: Embrace the close-knit community! Word-of-mouth is powerful here, so focus on building genuine relationships and delivering top-quality service. Trust and reputation are everything in a smaller community. Also, don’t be afraid to network—connect with other local businesses (even your competition!), support community events and get involved. The more you invest in Greater Reading, the more the community will support you in return!

What’s your go-to place or activity in Greater Reading when you need to unwind?

Freddy: I love going to shows, especially at Reverb. I’m a metalhead at heart, and being able to see bands I love in a more intimate setting reminds me of growing up in NYC back in the ’90s.

Jill: I love all the dog friendly trails in the area—Nolde Forest, Wyomissing, Blue Marsh, Antietam Lake. It’s endless! So many beautiful areas to get outside with your dog and unwind in nature.
