Go Green Columbia As part of Sahd Metal Recycling’s annual Earth Day Week celebration, hundreds of community members gathered along the Susquehanna River for Go Green Columbia, a celebration of Arbor Day, Earth Day and environmental stewardship. In partnership with local businesses and organizations, the event highlighted Columbia’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, civic engagement and caring for the environment for future generations. By bringing together local businesses and residents, Columbia continues to invest in the sense of place that supports a thriving community.

COLUMBIA Columbia’s downtown offers a unique blend of history, architecture and river-town character. Walking along Locust Street and its surrounding blocks, visitors can experience centuries of preserved history through stunning Colonial, Federal, Victorian and Neo-Classical buildings that were spared the redevelopment efforts of the 1970s and 1980s. Landmarks such as the Wright Ferry Mansion and Museum and the Columbia Bank Museum continue to connect residents and visitors to the borough’s rich past.

The tree-lined streets create a calming atmosphere, and Columbia has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation for 33 years. Another downtown anchor is the Columbia Market House. Built in 1869, it is one of the oldest operating market houses in the country and continues to serve the community on Saturdays with fresh produce, flowers, baked goods and other offerings.

JUSTIN Community events continue to bring thousands of visitors each year. Popular events include Thunder on the RULEdowntown River, Mardi Gras, Riverfest, the Memorial Day Parade and the

Columbia’s history is deeply tied to transportation and commerce. The town was built around a ferry that carried goods and travelers across the Susquehanna River and became known as the “Gateway to the West.” Later, canals, railroads and bridges helped connect Columbia to the broader region. Columbia also played an important role in the Underground Railroad and Civil War history. Historians have found evidence that Columbia was the birthplace of the term “Underground Railroad,” and local citizens famously burned the bridge across the Susquehanna River in June 1863 to prevent Confederate forces from advancing into Pennsylvania.

Today, Columbia continues to evolve while embracing its history.

The Hampton Inn by Hilton at The Chip Factory is bringing new investment to downtown and will draw visitors to the area’s antique shops, restaurants and museums. The planned National Underground Railroad Museum is also expected to become a major attraction.

The Susquehanna River remains one of Columbia’s defining assets. Columbia Crossing serves as the trailhead of the Northwest River Trail, attracting hikers and bicyclists who can explore 30 miles of trail north to Bainbridge. River Park, Columbia Crossing, boating, fishing and connections to York County’s Trail Towns network continue to bring visitors into the community.

The core businesses that draw visitors and make downtown a great place to work include locally owned coffee shops, eateries, boutiques, vintage and antique stores, craft breweries, galleries, museums and warehouses. It All Starts with A Home How do you build a vibrant community?

Together. One home at a time.

On a sunny Thursday in April, volunteers from Kleen-Rite Corporation—a Columbia-based car wash equipment distribution business—constructed porch roofs, assembled window frames and installed doorknobs at Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity’s five-home Linden Street Build in Columbia, which is one of a dozen homes Habitat has built (or is currently building) in the borough.

A palpable feeling of purpose and camaraderie was in the air. The work was especially meaningful to the Kleen-Rite volunteers, who were excited to build affordable homes in their own neighborhood.

“It’s such a fantastic experience to help create these five homes for people who are going to enjoy them and thrive in them in this wonderful community,” said Jamie, a Kleen-Rite volunteer.

To date, 118 volunteers, including Thaddeus Stevens students, State Senator James Malone and his team, members of local churches, civic groups and businesses, and dedicated individuals, have contributed 773 volunteer hours at Linden Street.

Habitat acquired the lot, located across from the Turkey Hill Experience, from Arlette Warren, who decided not to pursue her own plans to develop the site. Inspired by Habitat’s

mission and its successful construction of four nearby homes on South 5th Street, Warren sold the lot and plans to Habitat for $175,000.

The five connected homes at the Linden Street Build were designed by Hammel Associates Architects, and the project was made possible by generous donations from the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, the High Foundation, the Clark Associates Charitable Foundation, CNH Industrial Foundation, Bank of Bird-in-Hand, Northwest Charitable Foundation and others.

Habitat launched the project on May 1, 2025. On that day, four of the five future homeowners stood with ceremonial golden shovels and dug into the soil on the site of their future homes.

“It’s becoming real,” said Stephanie, a Habitat homebuyer.

Stephanie previously experienced a period of housing instability, during which she and her daughters lived in her car, on friends’ couches and at Tenfold’s TLC shelter, before being accepted into Habitat’s first-time homebuyer program.

“I’m in the program, I’ve selected my house,” said Stephanie, a manager at a local Valvoline. “But to actually see (construction) start, it’s an overwhelming feeling of joy.”

1: The late former President Jimmy Carter didn’t found Habitat for Humanity.

However, Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn were dedicated volunteers, champions of the nonprofit’s mission and played integral roles in Habitat’s success.

Habitat for Humanity was founded by Millard and Linda Fuller in 1976, and, for the past 50 years, the nonprofit (with affiliates in all 50 states and in 70 countries around the world) has helped more than 62 million people build better futures for themselves through access to affordable housing. Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity was founded 10 years later and has built 300 affordable homes, and created hundreds of firsttime homebuyers, alongside thousands of volunteers.

2: Habitat for Humanity doesn’t give homes away for free.

Habitat for Humanity partners with lower-income families in need of a decent place to live. Families must demonstrate the ability to pay an affordable mortgage (no more than 30% of their monthly income), and a willingness to partner.

In lieu of a traditional down payment, Habitat families contribute “sweat equity” into the program, which includes building their own or their fellow partner families’ future Habitat homes, working at the Lancaster Habitat ReStore, taking financial literacy and home maintenance classes, and students can contribute by earning A’s and B’s in school.

When 100 sweat equity hours are recorded, families select their future homes from available Habitat properties, and when their sweat equity requirement is completed, and their future home is ready, families officially settle on their home and move in.

But first comes a home dedication where friends, neighbors, Habitat staff, supporters and the volunteers who worked alongside the family to help them achieve their dream of homeownership, come together to celebrate the family’s achievement.

For Habitat homebuyer partners like Stephanie, the opportunity to become a homeowner means everything.

EPHRATA Ephrata offers a downtown experience that blends historic character with a forward-looking vision. Its wide streetscape, attractive architecture and welcoming atmosphere distinguish it from many communities in Lancaster County. At the heart of its identity is the Ephrata Cloister, the historic site that marks the community’s origins and reflects its unique heritage.

Revolving Loan Fund Program, access to the LERTA tax abatement program and a dedicated Business Recruitment & Retention Committee. The organization also facilitates the Downtown Ephrata Property & Business Owners’ Association, fostering collaboration and shared problem-solving among stakeholders.

Founded in 1732 by Conrad Beissel and his followers, the Ephrata Cloister became one of colonial America’s most distinctive religious communities. Known for innovation, craftsmanship, music and printing, it attracted settlers and artisans whose influence helped shape the Borough of Ephrata.

Today, the Cloister remains a major cultural and tourism asset, drawing visitors who often continue their experience by shopping, dining and exploring downtown.

Community traditions and events further strengthen downtown. For example, Mainspring’s popular First Saturday events bring themed activities, entertainment, shopping and family-friendly experiences to Main Street throughout the summer. Another cornerstone tradition is the annual Ephrata Fair, one of Pennsylvania’s largest street fairs, which attracts tens of thousands of visitors and provides tremendous exposure for local businesses.

Ephrata has also developed a growing reputation as a recreation destination. The Warwick to Ephrata (WERT) Rail Trail connects directly to the central business district, bringing residents and visitors into downtown. The community is home to Pennsylvania’s first bike park of its kind, a public bike share program, the free-to-use Ephrata Unleashed Dog Park and the still-in-planning Mountain Springs Recreational Preserve.

Together, these amenities create an active, communitycentered environment that supports revitalization and investment.

Looking ahead, the planned Mountain Springs Recreational Preserve represents one of Ephrata’s most transformative opportunities. By linking outdoor recreation, conservation, the WERT Rail Trail and downtown, the project seeks to encourage visitors to explore local businesses and participate in community life. Combined with continued investment in small businesses, walkability and historic preservation, these efforts will strengthen Ephrata as a destination where natural beauty, historic charm and economic opportunity work hand in hand.

Downtown Ephrata features a strong mix of locally owned businesses, professional services and financial institutions.

Ephrata National Bank serves as an anchor institution, reinforcing confidence in the community’s economic future.

The district also includes healthcare providers, attorneys, insurance agencies, tax professionals and numerous personal service businesses.

One of downtown’s defining characteristics is its diverse collection of Hispanic-owned restaurants and barbershops.

These establishments bring unique flavors and cultural influences to the community, creating a vibrant scene that reflects Ephrata’s welcoming spirit and evolving identity.

Ephrata Area School District: Connecting Classrooms & Careers

One of the district’s most innovative approaches is its project-based Cornerstone learning experiences focused on real-world problems and community connections. These projects emphasize student voice, sustained inquiry, public presentation and collaboration with community partners.

Across every grade level, students engage in work that mirrors the collaboration and problem-solving expected in a professional place of employment.

The EASD Instructional Model further supports this vision by prioritizing flexible, student-centered environments, rigorous and transferable learning targets and modern learning tools that empower students to take ownership of their learning.

At Ephrata Area School District (EASD), partnerships between schools, local employers and community organizations are creating meaningful opportunities for students to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences.

At the center of this work is the EASD Life Ready Graduate (LRG) framework, designed to prepare students to have a positive impact on an ever-changing world, beyond traditional content mastery and standardized assessments.

Recognizing that the traditional model of education “was designed for another time,” EASD implements relevant, LRG student-centered learning experiences districtwide, from Kindergarten to Grade 12.

The Life Ready Graduate framework focuses on three core areas: acquiring knowledge, applying skills and demonstrating dispositions. Students build academic foundations while also developing communication, collaboration, critical thinking, adaptability, resilience and much more. With input and collaboration from the community, these qualities are what employers consistently identify as essential in today’s workplace.

To bring these skills to life, EASD intentionally connects students with local businesses and industry professionals through a variety of learning experiences. Community members can participate in classroom career talks, mentorship opportunities, internships, apprenticeships, job-shadowing experiences, mock interviews and industry field trips. Businesses also support students through advisory panels, guest demonstrations, realworld design challenges and student competitions.

“The community connections made by our students, from kindergarten through senior year, are invaluable. Hearing from and learning about important and varied community assets and valued partners can be eye-opening for our students to obtain a more accurate view of what it is like in the real world. It also helps foster an appreciation for what makes the Ephrata community and the larger Lancaster County area so special.”

The responsible use of artificial intelligence is something EASD also embraces among its students and staff. The district has developed an AI implementation plan focused on creating “a private, safe and effective AI ecosystem to benefit EASD learning and instruction.” Customized AI tools now support teachers with lesson planning, curriculum alignment and behavioral interventions, while student-facing tools at the high school provide tutoring, feedback and personalized learning support.

For local businesses, the opportunity to engage with EASD is more than community service. By mentoring students, hosting interns, offering co-op experiences or participating in classroom activities, employers help students better understand career pathways while strengthening the future workforce. These partnerships are helping students grow with the confidence, skills and experiences needed to meet their full potential and thrive beyond graduation.

“Local businesses and community organizations hold the keys to deeper learning. We cannot provide the same levels of authenticity and relevance to course content alone; we are better when partnered with our community. Additionally, the chance for students to visit, job-shadow or participate in an internship provides an even more realistic view of potential career options prior to graduation.”

Craving hearty meals, craft brews, global bites or sweet indulgences? Look no further than E-town’s local restaurants, taverns, bakeries and cafés. With its small-town charm, welcoming atmosphere and thriving local businesses, E-town offers a memorable experience for visitors and residents alike.

Elizabethtown’s history has been a major factor in shaping its Main Street and business community. Settled in 1730, officially laid out in 1753 and incorporated as a borough in 1827, the town has long served as a center for commerce and community life.

The arrival of the railroad was a key milestone, driving economic growth and connecting Elizabethtown to the surrounding region. Today, that history is reflected in the preserved historic downtown, locally owned businesses and strong sense of community that make Main Street a vibrant destination.

Main Street is defined by a diverse mix of locally owned, experience-driven businesses that offer something unique for residents and visitors alike. Highlights include a toy store featuring both vintage and modern favorites, a coffee shop and art gallery, an independent bookstore, a candle shop that produces its products in-house and an art studio offering guided instruction. Other anchor businesses include a bicycle shop, a locally made ice cream shop where customers can create custom sundaes and a boutique featuring ethically sourced handicrafts from villages around the world. These distinctive businesses help create a downtown experience that blends shopping, creativity and engagement.

Elizabethtown’s Main Street actively supports small businesses and entrepreneurs through coordinated community and tourism initiatives. LIV-Etown organizes monthly themed events designed to encourage residents and visitors to explore local businesses and connect directly with business owners, helping increase visibility and foot traffic throughout downtown.

Discover Elizabethtown, the tourism committee supported by the Elizabethtown Chamber of Commerce, also plays a key role in promoting local businesses and organizations. Together, these efforts help foster a supportive environment for small business growth, entrepreneurship and long-term success.

A variety of recurring events, traditions and experiences draw residents and visitors downtown throughout the year.

Monthly 2nd Fridays feature live music, community games and special food menus. Annual traditions such as Memorial Day, Halloween and Holiday parades bring the community together while driving foot traffic to shops and restaurants. Seasonal highlights include the Holiday Tree Lighting, featuring live

entertainment, dancers, character meet-and-greets and the official tree lighting ceremony. Other popular events include the Candy Crawl, Downtown Farmers Market and New Year’s Eve Festival. Together, these events foster a strong sense of community while generating economic activity and visibility for local businesses.

Looking ahead, Elizabethtown’s Main Street is well-positioned for continued growth and revitalization. The ongoing arrival of new retail businesses reflects strong demand for locally owned shops and services, while new residential housing developments in the surrounding area are contributing to steady population growth. Together, these trends present opportunities to expand the downtown business base, strengthen the local economy and further enhance the vitality and long-term sustainability of Main Street.

LITITZ

Downtown Lititz is home to Wilbur Chocolate, Sturgis Pretzels and more than 50 independent retailers and eateries. Known for being walkable, quaint and charming, downtown Lititz offers visitors a unique blend of history, shopping, dining, entertainment and hospitality. At its heart is Lititz Springs Park, which annually hosts one of the country’s longest Fourth of July celebrations.

History continues to shape the character of downtown. Lititz Springs Park traces its history to 1778. Sturgis Pretzels opened in 1861, becoming America’s first commercial pretzel bakery, while Wilbur Chocolate’s flagship store opened in 1934. More recently, the Wilbur Hotel opened in 2019, adding another destination and gathering place within the downtown district.

Together, these milestones reflect the balance of historic preservation and continued investment that defines Lititz today.

That blend of history and innovation is reflected in the variety of businesses found throughout downtown. Visitors can explore retailers, eateries, drinking establishments, live music venues, museums, lodging and more. From the Wilbur Hotel to Alden House, Stoll & Wolfe to Collusion Tap Works, Lititz Shirt Factory to the Lititz Historical Foundation, Rooster Street Brewing to Appalachian Brewing, Atlas General Store to Purple Robin, and Bulls Head Public House to New Holland Coffee, downtown offers a wide range of amenities and experiences.

Supporting those small businesses remains a priority for Venture Lititz. Promotions and marketing are among their greatest strengths. Their Lititz Magazine serves as a valuable tool for attracting visitors, while the organization’s e-newsletter and social media channels reach more than 65,000 people. One of the most successful promotional initiatives is the Holiday Shopping Card program. Through submitted cards alone, more

than $600,000 was spent in downtown Lititz between midNovember and January 5. In addition to marketing efforts, the organization actively seeks grants and programs that support businesses and strengthen the downtown district.

The mix of businesses in Lititz continues to be one of the community’s greatest assets. Tourism anchors such as Wilbur Chocolate, Sturgis Pretzels and the Lititz Historical Foundation bring visitors to town and encourage them to explore local shops, restaurants and attractions. Signature events further contribute to downtown’s vitality. Fire & Ice, the Fourth of July celebration, the Craft Show and the Art Show attract residents and visitors throughout the year while supporting local businesses and creating memorable community experiences.

Looking ahead, planning and investment continue to shape Lititz’s future. Between now and Fire & Ice 2027, downtown leaders will be working on a five-year action plan designed to guide future growth and development. Excitement is also building around the WERT rail trail extension into downtown, a project identified in Lancaster County’s MPO’s Transportation Improvement Plan. Together, these efforts will help strengthen downtown Lititz while preserving the qualities that have made it one of Lancaster County’s most recognizable destinations.

The Making of Land in Lancaster There is no shortage of places trying to attract talent.

What makes the challenge difficult is that most communities are ultimately competing on the same claims: opportunity, affordability, quality of life and growth. The harder task is creating a brand that reflects a place honestly while giving people a compelling reason to see it differently.

That challenge became central to Donovan Advertising’s partnership with the Lancaster Chamber on the development of “Land in Lancaster,” a talent attraction and retention initiative designed to help reshape perceptions of Lancaster County and highlight the opportunities, culture and everyday advantages that exist across the region.

From the beginning, the work focused less on inventing an identity and more on uncovering one that already existed.

The initiative began with a discovery phase that brought together Chamber leadership for an in-person workshop focused on brand positioning, audience insights, competitive analysis, messaging and long-term goals. Conversations explored not only what Lancaster County offers, but also how the region is often perceived by outsiders.

Certain tensions surfaced repeatedly.

Many people still associate Lancaster primarily with farmland, rural living or a slower pace of life. While those qualities remain part of the county’s identity, they no longer tell the full story. Lancaster County today supports thriving industries, entrepreneurial growth, higher education institutions, vibrant downtowns, arts and culture, restaurants, entertainment and expanding career opportunities, all while

maintaining the sense of community and accessibility that residents value.

and economic opportunity paired with genuine community connection.

The discovery process also helped identify a core emotional truth behind the initiative: people increasingly want professional opportunity without sacrificing balance.

For Donovan, the goal was never simply to market a location.

It was to help articulate why so many people choose to build their lives here in the first place. LT

That insight helped Donovan shape the strategic foundation for the brand.

During the brand development phase, Donovan worked with the Chamber to develop the “Land in Lancaster” name, visual identity, messaging framework and brand guidelines.

The creative approach was guided by four core themes uncovered during discovery: Lancaster County is surprising, vibrant, transformative and connective.

Those ideas became important guardrails throughout the process. The brand needed to feel confident and contemporary without losing the authenticity and grounded character that make Lancaster County distinct. Rather than relying on exaggerated claims or overly polished tourism language, the goal was to create something welcoming, honest and enduring.

The initiative also needed to reflect the diversity of experiences that exist throughout the county itself. Lancaster County is not defined by a single downtown, industry or lifestyle. Its appeal comes from the combination of historic communities, growing businesses, cultural activity, outdoor access and the ability to remain connected to major Northeast cities while offering a different pace of life.

That strategic foundation carried directly into website development.

Designed as both a storytelling platform and practical relocation resource, the “Land in Lancaster” website was built to help users explore the county through categories like Live, Work, Culture and Industry. Donovan developed the site to function across devices while allowing flexibility for future content growth and expansion as the initiative evolves.

More importantly, the site was designed around the needs of multiple audiences, from young professionals beginning their careers to executives relocating with their families and employers recruiting talent into the region.

In many ways, the project reflected the same balance that defines Lancaster County itself: professional ambition paired with accessibility, growth paired with authenticity

existing and new projects are transforming historic spaces into community-focused venues, while the town’s growth potential continues to attract new investment and residents. The community also boasts a thriving arts scene that offers unique hands-on experiences.

Supporting those businesses has been a priority for more than 65 years. The Chamber serves businesses throughout Manheim Borough, Penn Township and Rapho Township through educational programs, networking events, marketing opportunities and community experiences. The organization also works directly with new businesses by offering ribbon cutting ceremonies and advocates for a pro-business climate that encourages long-term success.

Community events play a major role in bringing people downtown. For the past five years, 1st Thursdays encouraged businesses to stay open late while offering special incentives for shoppers and diners. The events also provided Chamber members with opportunities to engage directly with the community through vendor tables in Market Square.

This year, the Chamber has expanded its approach with several community-focused events. The inaugural Manheim Arts Festival was well received, while the Baron Brew Fest recently celebrated its fourth successful year. The event attracts nearly 1,500 visitors to Market Square and serves as the Chamber’s primary fundraiser, generating resources that are reinvested directly into the community. Together, these events introduce new visitors to Manheim and encourage return trips to shop, dine and experience all the community has to offer.

Often described as the Hallmark of Lancaster County, Manheim’s Market Square is featured in many movies and sets the stage for a quaint, small-town feel. A tree-lined center median, surrounding the town gazebo, anchors the downtown storefronts and creates a welcoming focal point for residents and visitors alike.

That sense of place dates back more than 250 years. Manheim was deliberately planned in 1762 by Henry William Stiegel and his partners with a large central square as the heart of civic and economic life. A large fire in December 1998, which damaged or destroyed several buildings, led to a mix of historic preservation and newer structures. Today, the balance between history and adaptation is visible throughout downtown in the mix of historic and modern storefronts and residences.

Manheim’s Central Business District encompasses both Market Square (Route 772) and Main Street (Route 72). The local economy is anchored by professional services and retail shopping but is increasingly being shaped by hospitality, craft brewing and winemaking, and historic preservation. Several

Not all Main Street businesses are retail. In Northern Lancaster County, larger employers have made the decision to invest in their communities by maintaining a presence along Main Street corridors, including Ephrata National Bank, Unruh Insurance and Garden Spot Village. Their commitment to staying and growing where they started demonstrates the value of investing in the communities they call home.

he Main Streets of Northern Lancaster County are a unique microcosm that provides a vibrant picture of what makes our region great. From the bustling shops and boutiques of Lititz to the excitement and growth in Ephrata and the antique shops of Adamstown, our Main Streets bring communities together while highlighting the distinct character of each town.

Through our work at the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce, we have the opportunity to see firsthand how these downtown districts contribute not only to local economies but also to the identity, culture and character of the communities they serve.

The businesses that occupy our Main Streets are a direct reflection of each community, but they also tell the story of how our region has evolved. As factories have closed or moved to larger locations, new opportunities have emerged.

Revitalization has taken place through microbreweries, restaurants and small businesses repurposing formerly vacant spaces into thriving destinations that create jobs, increase foot traffic and support neighboring businesses.

Northern Lancaster County is particularly proud of leading the way in this area, from Pour Man’s Brewing Company in downtown Ephrata to Harding Yost Insurance in Denver and the many diverse offerings found throughout Lititz.

This commitment to preserving history while repurposing existing spaces reflects the values of our region and the entrepreneurial spirit that runs in our blood.

Strong Main Streets are also economic engines. Every storefront represents jobs, investment and opportunity.

When local businesses choose to remain downtown, their customers and employees support neighboring establishments as they shop, dine and attend events throughout the community. These districts also serve as gateways to our towns, attracting visitors who discover what makes our communities unique and return again and again.

Main Street, however, is nothing without its people. These small towns and corridors reflect the character of those who have called them home for generations, as well as those who have chosen to become part of the fabric of our communities.

There is something special about walking into a local barber shop or family-owned store, being greeted by name, and running into neighbors you haven’t seen in a while.

Our Main Street businesses and residents invest in one another because they are part of something bigger than themselves. Whether it’s attending a First Saturday in downtown Ephrata, grabbing ice cream on a summer evening at Lickity Split in New Holland, enjoying a fresh-baked W Donut in Akron or strolling through a boutique in Lititz, these shared experiences create a sense of belonging that strengthens our communities.

While each Main Street has its own personality, they all share a common purpose: creating places where businesses can succeed, residents can connect and communities can thrive.

Our Main Streets have seen their share of ups and downs, but one thing has remained constant—the dedication of local leaders to improving their communities. The continued success of these districts is made possible through collaboration among business owners, municipal leaders, nonprofit organizations, volunteers and community members who share a vision for the future.

Organizations such as Mainspring of Ephrata, Venture Lititz and the New Holland Business Association work tirelessly to create events, encourage investment, support infrastructure improvements and advocate for their downtown districts.

Supporting those businesses is a strong network of community partnerships. The Chamber has built a supportive network for both new and established businesses through events, networking opportunities and business outreach. The Chamber also works closely with the Borough’s Community & Economic Development Department to help businesses connect with resources, guidance and support that encourage growth and long-term success.

Mount Joy’s downtown includes historic buildings that connect visitors to the community’s past. The Mount Joy Area Historical Society has created a self-guided walking tour with brochures available at the Chamber office. Beginning this summer, guided tours will also be offered through the Historical Society.

Along the route are historical markers that were installed in 2024 as an Eagle Scout project by Tristan Bair, a junior member of the Historical Society. Each marker includes QR codes that provide additional information about the site and its history.

While many downtown buildings have been thoughtfully repurposed over the years, Bube’s Brewery remains one of the community’s most distinctive landmarks. It is the only surviving “lager era” brewery in the United States that remains in nearly intact condition and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, Bube’s offers four unique dining experiences to suit a variety of tastes, including the Catacombs Restaurant, where guests dine several stories below the street in the aging cellars, along with tours available by appointment.

Today, Mount Joy’s Main Street is increasingly shaped by locally owned specialty businesses that focus on creating experiences and fostering community, in addition to retail. The Dice Goblin and Mystic Table Hobby & Game Emporium are each husbandand-wife-owned businesses that have helped establish Mount Joy as a welcoming destination for tabletop gamers. These businesses offer everything from beginner-friendly game nights to tournaments, roleplaying campaigns, hobby workshops and community events that bring people downtown.

Adding to the growing gaming and hobby scene are specialty retailers like Dave’s Toy Box, with vintage toys, collectibles and retro games. Other Main Street businesses have created experiences for visitors and residents alike. Guitars on Main offers music lessons and free live performances, while businesses such as Moon Raven Alley, Succulents by ShelNe and 2Fab Fitness host workshops and classes that encourage creativity and community connection. Together with retailers like Time After Time Clocks, Ladybug Crossing, The Joy of Sweets and Treats, and Sloan’s Gift Shop, these businesses are helping shape a downtown that feels creative and welcoming

Community events continue to bring visitors to Main Street throughout the year. The Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce hosts the annual Spooktacular on the fourth Friday in October, when Main Street is closed to traffic so children can safely trick-or-treat with local businesses and organizations.

The Chamber is also part of a coalition of Mount Joy civic organizations responsible for longtime favorites, the Taste of Mount Joy Cruisin’ Cuisine Car Show and Winterfest. Now in its 23rd year, the car show brings a wide variety of vehicles and local food trucks to Main Street each July. Winterfest, now celebrating its 28th year, features music, food, children’s activities, visits with Santa and a tree lighting ceremony.

Other signature events include The Fresh Brews of Mount Joy, hosted by Voyage Mount Joy, which draws craft beer enthusiasts from across the region to sample pours from more than 50 breweries, and Summer Solstice, hosted by the Summer Solstice Collective, which welcomes the first day of summer with local artisans, wellness vendors, live entertainment and family-friendly activities.

Looking ahead, Mount Joy has available space that is ideal for both startups and established businesses looking to grow.

Its convenient location between Lancaster and Harrisburg, combined with a train station located one block off Main Street and multiple RRTA bus stops along Main Street, provides easy access for commuters, visitors and tourists while helping connect people to local businesses and community events.

Main Street Spotlight

QUARRYVILLE

Located in the heart of Southern Lancaster County, Quarryville serves as both a historic borough and a community hub.

Founded in 1791 and formally incorporated as Quarryville Borough in 1892, the town takes its name from the limestone quarries that helped shape its early development and economy.

The borough’s origins date back to 1775, when Martin Barr acquired several thousand acres of land, including what is now Quarryville. Originally known as Barr’s Quarries, the community was officially named Quarryville in 1837, and the first post office opened in 1849. The settlement grew alongside the limestone industry, with more than 12 quarries employing over 100 men by the mid-1800s. As the industry expanded, churches, hotels and businesses followed, helping establish the community that exists today.

One of the borough’s oldest remaining landmarks is Barr’s Ark, affectionately known as “The Ark.” Built by Martin Barr in 1791 or 1792, it remains the longest-standing structure in Quarryville and a reminder of the borough’s rich history.

Today, Main Street centers on the intersections and roads leading from West State Street, West Fourth Street and East State Street. Businesses throughout the corridor continue to serve residents and visitors while contributing to the area’s economic vitality. Goods is a major anchor business and is completing renovations to expand its retail footprint. Dottie’s and Son’s Ice Cream has become a local staple, known for its cheesesteaks. At the same time, the relocation of Dollar General into the former Rite Aid building has expanded retail opportunities in the borough.

Additional businesses can be found throughout Towns Edge Shopping Center, anchored by Giant and home to several small businesses, including Pack N’ Ship. Along State Street, visitors will find businesses such as Dust in Time, The Fashion Exchange, Sam’s Pizza, Brides of Today, Solanco Glass and Mirror, J & B Hotel, Quarryville Family Restaurant, The Daily Grind, Bloomly Massage and many others.

Quarryville’s location continues to be one of its greatest strengths. Situated at the intersection of two state highways and one U.S. route, the borough serves as a gateway to Southern Lancaster County. The recent connection to the Enola Low Grade Trail provides cyclists, walkers and outdoor enthusiasts with direct access to local businesses and the downtown district. Community gathering spaces also play an important role in local life, including Huffnagle Park, which hosts a popular summer concert series that brings residents and visitors together throughout the season.

Supporting local businesses is a priority for the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce, located just a short walk from Main Street. The Chamber connects businesses with networking and educational opportunities throughout the year and partners with organizations including SCORE, ASSETS, the Economic Development Company of Lancaster County, the Lancaster County Workforce Development Board and the Quarryville Library.

Together, Quarryville’s history, local businesses, community partnerships and growing recreational connections continue to strengthen its role as the center of Southern Lancaster County.

Through counseling services for individuals, couples and families, the organization provides support for challenges including anxiety, depression, trauma and relationship struggles. Another impactful organization serving the region is Solid Rock Youth Ministries, which focuses on mentoring and empowering young people throughout the community.
