Irving Forest Products to Acquire
Masardis Sawmill
in Maine
On Thursday, Irving Forest Products, which owns and operates wood processing facilities in Maine and New York, announced that it will acquire the Masardis Sawmill in Masardis, Maine. The sale will close on January 5.
Previously owned by Groupe Lebel, the Masardis operation has a long history of producing random-length spruce and fir lumber. It currently employs 80 people and has the capacity to produce 115 million board feet annually. The sawmill is located within close proximity to Irving’s 1.3 million acres of timberlands in Maine.

With the addition of the Masardis operation, J.D. Irving now operates 10 sawmills as part of its solid wood operations, with a total annual capacity of 1.3 billion board feet.

NH Logging Company Fined For Violating Vermont
Law At Concord Site
The Agency of Natural Resources Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation (FPR) announced that Hicks Logging, LLC, based in Jefferson, N.H., was fined $6,000 for failing to file advanced notice of its intent and to obtain a permit to conduct a heavy cut on property located in Concord.
A heavy cut is defined as a harvest leaving a residual stand of healthy trees below the recommended density as defined by the USDA Forest Service silvicultural guides for similar stands. The agency states that the goal of the Heavy Cut Law is to limit extensive harvesting on large areas of 40 acres or more and to ensure that any such harvesting is guided by an approved forest management plan. Prior to conducting a heavy cut, a Notice of Intent to Cut must be filed and authorization secured from FPR. Any permit issued must include an approved silvicultural plan for the harvest.

In December 2022, FPR staff conducted an inspection of the 52.7-acre property in Concord in response to a complaint of a heavy cut violation. After inventorying the residual stand, FPR determined that the company performed a heavy cut on 45.6 acres without providing FPR with advanced notice of its intent or securing a permit with an approved plan for the cut.
“Heavy cutting without a silvicultural plan can harm forest health and productivity,” said Danielle Fitzko, Commissioner of FPR. “This, in turn, affects wildlife, soils, water quality, and the forest economy.”
Hicks Logging LLC agreed to a fine of $6,000.00 for the violation. The agreement was incorporated into a Final Judicial Order of the Vermont Superior Court, Environmental Division on Wednesday.

ALIFT Raises Money for Injured Loggers
ALIFT Helps Injured Logger
Kevin Craig of Milton, PA was seriously injured in a logging accident in December. He was hit on the head by a falling limb and had to be lifeflighted. He suffered broken bones in his neck and back requiring two surgeries. He is now at home but faces a long recovery. Alift was able to help Kevin and his family. ALIFT is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit that provides financial assistance to logging accident victims and their families in Pennsylvania and southern tier New York.

Conservancy adds nearly 3,000 acres to Hancock County forest preserve

With the help of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other partners, the Nature Conservancy in Maine has added nearly 3,000 acres to the Narraguagus Forest Preserve north of Tunk Mountain.
The parcel includes a variety of habitats as well as permanent protection of almost five miles of the West Branch of the Narraguagus River.
TNC’s forest program director Mark Berry said the heavily forested addition is now part of 46,000 contiguous acres of conservation lands in eastern Hancock County.
“We’re excited about this property in large part because of its contribution to a larger picture. It ties together a big landscape that is really important for the Narraguagus River Watershed, which is a fantastic aquatic resource for brook trout and sea run fish, but also really important wildlife habitat,” Berry said.
Berry said the area is an important pathway for plants and animals to be able to move across the landscape as the climate warms. The preserve is open for fishing, hunting and other recreation including an ATV trail..
