90th Annual Craftsmen's Fair

Welcome to the League’s 90th Annual Craftsmen’s Fair! We are excited to be at the beautiful Mount Sunapee Resort for a nine day celebration of craft which is the non-profit League’s signature event and largest fundraiser of the year. We believe that “craft inspires, enriches and builds community” and this is fully experienced here at the Fair. For our 90th, we have 22 firstyear booth holders, a return of daily musical guests, and new demonstrations and workshops. We are continuing many favorite activities from prior years including our kids’ scavenger hunt, free Kids Create tent, guild demonstrations, and the Art, Craft & Design and Sculpture Garden Exhibitions.

Take the opportunity to express yourself in a workshop, enjoy an engaging demonstration, shop with your favorite artists, and eat lunch in the sunshine while enjoying some toe-tapping music. We hope you are inspired by the Fair experience we have worked to create over the past year. Thank you for your support of the League and its artists at our 90th Fair! An Introduction to the League of NH Craftsmen The Mission of the League of NH Craftsmen is to advance, cultivate, and champion excellence in fine craft. We pursue that mission through educational programming, leadership initiatives, marketplace strategies, and support services.

For over 90 years, the nonprofit League of NH Craftsmen has promoted fine craft, supported craftsmen, and educated and enriched New Hampshire’s communities. Nearly 700 juried members produce exceptional contemporary and traditional craft in a wide range of media areas.

Visitors shop year-round in our seven affiliated Fine Craft Galleries which feature outstanding hand-made craft and offer engaging demonstrations and workshops for all ages and interests. Exhibitions at the League’s Headquarters location in Concord regularly celebrate the artistry of our members and guest artists. The Annual Craftsmen’s Fair serves as the League’s largest fundraiser, allowing the organization to provide services to our craftsmen and the public throughout the year.

The League’s story begins in the mid-1920’s when Mrs. Mary Coolidge and A. Cooper Ballantine joined forces to promote craft in New Hampshire. By 1932, the League of New Hampshire Arts and Crafts had been established, and the first official League shop was opened in Wolfeboro. The following year, the first Craftsmen’s Fair was held, making it the oldest continuously operating outdoor craft fair in the country.

The Demo/Sales booths allow space for the craftsmen to demonstrate how they create, as well as a sales area where guests may purchase the fine craft they have learned about and have seen made! The Demo/Sales booths are marked on the Fair map – see tent letters below.

Woodburning with Sara Desjardins: Tent S Sara will be demonstrating her highly detailed wood burning technique and will have educational materials available including sketches, works in progress, and even an extra woodburner set for guests to try!

Wood Carving with Scott Fogg: Tent F / Aug 9-13 See all aspects of Scott’s wood carving process from design conception through final finishing. He will demonstrate using chainsaws, rotary carving tools, grinders, sanders and even a propane torch, to show how he creates his whimsical wooden creations.

Raku Pots with Richard Foye: Tent F / Aug 5-8 Be amazed as pre-fired pots are heated to 1600 degrees! Various combustibles will be added to cause crackle smoked effects and metallic luster. The finished piece will be displayed, and the results explained.

Nuno Felting with Melinda LaBarge: Tent T / Aug 5-8 See the multiple steps in the Nuno felt making process. Melinda will be demonstrating the layout, rolling and fulling of the wool that goes into creating her beautiful wearable fiber pieces. She will also speak about how she dyes the silk and wool she uses in her work.

Handpan Instruments with Michael Lindskog: Tent A / Aug 5 + 9-12 A handpan is functional steel art. Each instrument is a unique, handmade one-of-a-kind piece. Michael will be sharing examples of the instruments at various stages of completion, allowing attendees to see and hear the process of creating these fascinating works of art.

Pottery with Maureen Mills and Steven Zoldak: Tent D Maureen and Steve will demonstrate throwing on a potter’s wheel both functional and decorative stoneware with beautiful finishing techniques. Watch as they do their specialty surface decorations in a variety of methods, including their slip trailing technique.

Needle Felting with Carolyn Wright: Tent T / Aug 9-13 Carolyn demonstrates how she creates her fun and detailed needle felted pieces. She will also teach fairgoers basic needle felting techniques so they can try making a small felted piece to take home from the Fair.

The New Hampshire Potters’ Guild is excited to teach you wheel throwing with an experienced potter to learn skills such as centering, opening, and pulling the clay into a unique and beautiful shape! Or you can try handbuilding and create a cup, bowl, or sculpture of your own design. This is a unique opportunity to experience the exciting world of pottery and enjoy getting messy!

Kids Create!: Tent V All Day/Free (Intended for kids and teens) Hands-on activities for kids and their grownups to explore craft.

Kids can follow a color-coded Fair map and answer questions about each special location to complete the activity. If they complete the hunt, they can choose a prize made by one of our craftsmen at the Kids Create tent.

Each child who wishes to participate will be given a worksheet and a participation button when they enter at the ticket gates.

Dorr Mill Store: Guild Tent C - All Day A demonstration of all steps in braiding a rug - wool preparation, braiding, butting, and lacing. Members will also be demonstrating the technique of traditional rug hooking with strips of wool.

Northern Lights Quilt Guild: Guild Tent C - All Day Come and see the guild’s quilts on display that were made using the basic shapes of squares and triangles. They encourage guests to come and participate in creating their own designs using these shapes too!

NH Spinners and Dyers Guild: Demo Tent U - All Day Members of the New Hampshire Spinners and Dyers Guild will provide visitors with an opportunity to observe the process of bringing raw wool to the yarn used for garments. Articles will be displayed.

NH Weavers Guild: Guild Tent C - All Day Members of the New Hampshire Weavers Guild will demonstrate handweaving on a variety of looms and share with Fair visitors about learning and practicing weaving as an art and craft in the 21 century.

Northeast Feltmakers Guild: Guild Tent C - All Day What could you make with wool, water, and soap? Visit with the Northeast Feltmakers to see what they have made including clothing, sculptures, toys, etc. Also, try your hands and join them in making FELT!

Junior Demonstrator Georgia Kahn: Next Gen Tent Y - All Day Watch and be inspired as Georgia demonstrates her pottery techniques on the wheel!

Wool Embroidery on Wool Pillows with Brita Ek: On the Patio - All Day Brita will showcase traditional Swedish techniques, from initial drawing on fabric, stitching, blocking, and assembling the finished product. There will be samples for attendees to work on and take home!

Workshops: Kids Basket Weaving with Ruth Boland: Tent U - 11am, 12:30pm, 1:45pm, and 3pm Come and weave a trinket basket on a 4 inch pre-drilled wooden base. The basket will be pre-started with spokes already inserted in order to ensure everyone finishes within 45 minutes. Students will have a choice of weaving with one weaver in a simple over under pattern (5-9 year olds) or weaving a 3 rod wale pattern with 3 weavers (8-12 year olds).

Different materials will be available for guests to use and instruction provided to try to create different styles of baskets with the guild!

Fly Tying with Larry Antonuk: Demo Tent U - All Day Master Fly Tyer Larry Antonuk will be demonstrating the techniques used in the construction of fishing flies. Using traditional Scottish and Irish patterns from the 1700's, he creates flies that are both fishable and works of art. Larry will also be demonstrating some contemporary New England trout patterns, sharing tips valuable to beginner or experienced tyers - or to anyone just wondering how this craft works.

New England Lace Guild: Demo Tent U - All Day The New England Lace Group will demonstrate the craft of bobbin lacemaking which dates back to the 16th century.

Bobbin lace was the technique used to make most lace before the advent of machines.

Junior Demonstrator Tansy Sears: Next Generation Tent Y - All Day Visit Tansy Sears as she demonstrates how she spins flax into linen yarn with a spinning wheel and spindle. She will also be discussing the steps that come before and after the spinning process.

Bead Society of NH: Guild Tent C - All Day The Bead Society of NH will be on hand to demonstrate various techniques from geometric beading to wire working and kumihimo, a form of Japanese braiding technique.

Woodcut Printmaking with Amy McGregor-Radin On the Patio- All Day Join Amy McGregor-Radin to watch the fascinating stages of making a woodcut print from carving, to inking, and printing. Guests can even give it a try with some of her samples that will be available!

The New Hampshire Art Association, a non-profit professional art association, was a sister organization to the League of NH Craftsmen when it was founded in 1940. The two organizations have maintained a close relationship through the years. The NHAA consists of over 400 members which include painters, photographers, watercolorists, printmakers, sculptors, and other fine artists. The League is happy to include the NHAA and its exhibitors and demonstrators at the Fair.
