Welcome to the League’s 89th Annual Craftsmen’s Fair! We were honored to present our in-person event in 2021, marking a successful return to Mount Sunapee Resort for the League and its craftsmen. 2022 promises to be another year filled with amazing, inspired art and joyous interactions including many demonstrations and hands-on activities for all ages. The Annual Craftsmen’s Fair is the largest fundraising activity for the League each year, allowing us to provide arts advocacy and educational opportunities for our members and the public year-round. Your ticket to this event helps us to create mentorship programs, offer small business education and master classes to our members, and coordinate artist-in-residence opportunities. We hope your visit to the Fair provides lasting memories, and a sense of connection to one of the most iconic arts organizations in New Hampshire. AN INTRODUCTION TO THE LEAGUE OF NH CRAFTSMEN For over 90 years, the nonprofit League of NH Craftsmen has promoted fine craft, supported craftsmen, and educated and enriched New Hampshire’s communities. Nearly 700 juried members produce exceptional contemporary and traditional craft in a wide range of media areas. Visitors shop year-round in our seven affiliated Fine Craft Galleries which feature outstanding hand-made craft and offer engaging demonstrations and workshops for all ages and interests. Exhibitions at the League’s Headquarters location in Concord regularly celebrate the artistry of our members and guest artists. The Annual Craftsmen’s Fair serves as the League’s largest fundraiser, allowing the organization to provide services to our craftsmen and the public throughout the year. The League’s story begins in the mid-1920’s when Mrs. Mary Coolidge and A. Cooper Ballantine joined forces to promote craft in New Hampshire. By 1932, the League of New Hampshire Arts and Crafts had been established, and the first official League shop was opened in Wolfeboro. The following year, the first Craftsmen’s Fair was held, making it the oldest continuously operating outdoor craft fair in the country. Rebranded as the League of NH Craftsmen in 1968, the League continues to be recognized as one of the country’s leading fine arts organizations, setting the standard for fine hand crafts. Our members are recognized throughout the country and the world for their creativity and technical expertise.

DEMO /SALES BOOTHS Learn from the craftsmen! The Demo/Sales booths allow space for the craftsmen to demonstrate how they create as well as a sales area so you may purchase the fine craft you have learned about and have seen them make! The Demo/Sales booths are marked on the map – see tent letters below. Didjeridu with Steven Bachman: Tent Y Listen to the beautiful sounds of these handmade, contemporary expressions of traditional instruments. Come closer and learn about the origin, crafting and how to play. Maybe even play some music of your own on a smaller version! Blacksmithing with Sam Durfee and Garry Kalajian: Tent B Garry and Sam will demonstrate traditional blacksmithing techniques: heating iron and steel bars in a coal forge and hammering them into door latches, candle holders, letter openers, and other objects. Garry will have his pedal-powered forge blower, and Fairgoers will have the opportunity to assist. Raku Pots with Richard Foye: Tent E (first 4 days) Be amazed as pre-fired pots are heated to 1600 degrees! Various combustibles will be added to cause crackle smoked effects and metallic luster. The finished piece will be displayed, and the results explained. Basketmaking with Jeffrey Gale: Tent S See all aspects of making and putting together a traditional ash splint basket and learn about the cultural history of baskets in our region. Jeffrey will demonstrate weaving ash splint baskets, carving rims and handles, and pounding ash billets into splints.

Painting on Silk with Betty Lathrop: Tent W (first 4 days) Explore the process for hand painting on silk using gutta and wax resists, including planning designs and the techniques to complete a project. Betty will demonstrate how various techniques affect the process and include explanations on how textures appear on different types of silk. Fairgoers may try the special affects if they desire. Pottery with Maureen Mills & Steven Zoldak: Tent G Maureen and Steve will demonstrate throwing on a potter’s wheel both functional and decorative stoneware with beautiful finishing techniques. Watch as they do their specialty surface decorations in a variety of methods, including their slip trailing technique. Large Scale Pottery with Stephen Procter: Tent A (first 4 days)/ Tent E (last 5 days) See the construction of large vessel forms by the stacking of thrown sections. Fairgoers may be invited to help lift and place thrown sections onto pieces in process. Ribbon Basket Weaving with Peggy Thrasher: Tent T See the phases of creating baskets out of ribbon. Peggy will be demonstrating how she makes her baskets. Have a question about a particular stage of creation? Peggy will have baskets at each stage to look at as well. Master-level craftsmen in a media category serve as jurors, reviewing and providing feedback to prospective members. Mentorships are available to assist artists through the jury process. Once accepted, League juried members are eligible to participate in the League’s marketing, sales, education, and exhibition opportunities.

Craft Clues Scavenger Hunt for Kids
Make your own clay tile with Jen Markmanrud Tent V, All Day Learn ceramic techniques and take home your own unique air-dry clay tile during the Annual Craftsmen’s Fair! Educator and artist, Jen Markmanrud, will demonstrate methods such as stamping, engraving, relief carving, and more while you create your own clay tile to take home. Instructions will be provided for finishing your pieces at home with common acrylic paints and other art supplies. Pre-register at Information Tent I. Prizes at the Kids Create! Tent K – Materials at Ticket Gates, All Day Kids can follow a color-coded Fair map and answer questions about each special location to complete the activity. If they collect all the answers they can go to the Kids Create tent, where they can choose a prize made by one of our craftsmen. Each child who wishes to participate in the Craft Clues scavenger hunt will be given a worksheet and a participation button when they enter at the ticket gate.

Surface Design Association Demo Tent U; 10am-1pm Anne McMillan is a collector of found objects and uses these objects as inspiration for her work by incorporating them into books to convey a story. Anne will demonstrate some surface design methods she uses in her books and the construction of an artist book. Juliette Paquin is an artist working with mixed media. She will be demonstrating monoprinting using a gel plate, acrylic paint, and paper. It is an easy way to make your own art papers, create backgrounds and textures. Exploring Needle Felting with Different Types of Fibers with Carolyn Wright Demo Tent U; 1:30pm to 5pm Juried League member, Carolyn Wright, will be demonstrating how different types of fibers can be used to needle felt such as pencil roving, wool roving, loose fibers, and fiber batts. She will have demo stations with different types of needles for anyone to try out along with examples of what you can make using needle felting techniques. Northeast Feltmakers Guild Guild Tent O; All Day Felt making is the ancient process of creating a textile by entangling wool or other animal fiber through pressure, agitation, water, soap, heat, or the use of barbed needles. Our members will answer questions about wool and the many types of embellishing fibers and fabrics that are used in modern felt making. We will also demonstrate a variety of felting techniques to move from loose fiber to finished felt. Come experience the magical transformation that is the essence of felt making! Northern Lights Quilt Guild Guild Tent O; All Day Northern Lights Quilt Guild will be demonstrating how to create hexagon projects from circles of fabric. Hexagon quilts have been around for centuries. Grandmother’s Flower Garden Quilts were popular in the 1930s, Honeycomb Quilt making came to the US in the 1800s, and English Paper Pieced quilts were made in England in the 1700s. Now in the 21st century, we will show you a way to make a modern version of the versatile hexagon from circles without the paper foundation. We will provide the fabric, needle, and thread (or glue), to get you started in this fun, creative activity.

Small Floral Still life with Silk and Wool Roving with Melinda LaBarge Demo Tent U; 11am-1pm and 2pm-4pm This project is a quick introduction into the wet felt technique. Simple shapes can be turned into beautiful floral arrangements, making this a rewarding project that is good for your self-esteem! Wet felt is made by using wool roving with soap, water, and friction (hand rolling). Each student will receive a kit with all the materials necessary. NH Dyers and Spinners Guild Tent O; All Day Guild members will be demonstrating the process of creating spun yarn from sheep fleece. We will offer the chance to experience different portions of the process by trying to card, spin on a wheel or drop spindles in quick free lessons. We will also have a display of finished items as well as pieces in progress.

NH Weaver’s Guild Guild Tent O; All Day The NH Weaver’s Guild has long been a faithful demonstrator in the Guild Tent! Weavers love to show visitors how to weave on various types of LOOMS! We bring our floor looms, our rigid heddle looms, our table looms, our Inkle looms, our tablet/card looms, our tapestry looms, even our “potholder” looms! We are happy to demonstrate, and even encourage visitors to “try-it” for themselves. We set up an exhibit of items woven by our members. Northeast Basketmakers Guild Guild Tent O; All Day The mission of the Northeast Basketmakers Guild is to further the art of basketry by nurturing the development of new basket makers, while celebrating and supporting accomplished basket makers. Come see how baskets are made from different materials such as reed (wood), pine needles, ribbons, and paper. We use many different weaving techniques to create a wide variety of baskets. Try your hand at adding on to a pine needle basket. Find out about our classes. Introduction to Hand papermaking with Angie Follensbee-Hall Demo Tent U; 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, 3:00 PM Learn the basics of hand papermaking as we explore basic techniques and experiment with different botanical ingredients. No experience is necessary. Papermaking is a perfect medium for beginners, and for experienced artists it is unlike any other medium! We will learn the basic history of papermaking, the fundamental materials, and tools, and then we will literally dive into sheet formation as we use beautiful flowers and other botanical items to design and enhance each sheet. Items may be gathered outdoors for use in paper designs. Students will leave with their “wet leaves” and be offered ideas for further exploration and development. Wearable Sculpture in felt and beading with Danielle Gaynor Demo Tent U; All Day Danielle Gaynor will be demonstrating how she combines needle felting together with beadwork to craft her abstract and nature inspired wearable art. Junior Demonstrator: Emma Jennings Next Gen Tent J; All Day Visit Emma Jennings as she demonstrates construction techniques to build with slabs of clay and make a variety of different unique ceramic vessels.

NHAA PARTICIPANTS We are happy to welcome the New Hampshire Art Association back to the Fair again this year. Please visit them in the NHAA Tent (adjacent to Tent 1 and the Sunapee Lodge) to see original paintings, prints and photographs. The New Hampshire Art Association, a non-profit professional art association, was a sister organization to the League of NH Craftsmen when it was founded in 1940. The two organizations have maintained a close relationship through the years. The NHAA consists of over 400 members which include painters, photographers, watercolorists, printmakers, sculptors, and other fine artists.
