Welcome to the League’s 91st Annual Craftsmen’s Fair — our 60th at the beautiful Mount Sunapee Resort. This nine day celebration of fine art and craft is the non-profit League’s signature event and largest fundraiser of the year. We believe that ‘craft inspires, enriches and builds community’ and this is fully experienced at the Fair. We hope you enjoy engaging demonstrations, shopping with your favorite artists, and sampling our many food offerings while listening to some toe-tapping music. No matter your age, there are opportunities to try your hand at many different types of craft. We hope the Fair, which we have worked for the last year to create, is an inspirational experience for you. Thank you for your support of the League and its artists at our 91st Fair!

The League is Celebrating 60 Years at Mount Sunapee!
Gracing the cover of our 2024 Fair program is a plaque that was commissioned and executed in 1964, the first year that the League of NH Craftsmen presented its Annual Craftsmen’s Fair at Mount Sunapee. The artist, Gerry Williams, studied his craft with the League under the tutelage of potter Vivika Heino. A longtime resident of Dunbarton, Williams was the co-founder of Studio Potter magazine and Phoenix Workshops, and was a source of inspiration for ceramic artists around the world. Williams was selected as New Hampshire’s first Artist Laureate by Governor Jeanne Shaheen in 1998, and in 2005 was honored with New Hampshire’s Lotte Jacobi Living Treasure Award. The artwork is both a piece of the League’s rich clay history, and a symbol of our longstanding relationship with the Mount Sunapee Resort, the State of NH and the leaseholders of this mountain property through sixty years of the Fair. The plaque may be seen in the Summit Lodge, above the fireplace.

The League’s story begins in the mid-1920’s when Mrs. Mary Coolidge and A. Cooper Ballantine joined forces to promote craft in New Hampshire. By 1932, the League of New Hampshire Arts and Crafts had been established, and the first official League shop was opened in Wolfeboro. The following year, the first Craftsmen’s Fair was held, making it the oldest continuously operating outdoor craft fair in the country.
Rebranded as the League of NH Craftsmen in 1968, the League continues to be recognized as one of the country’s leading fine arts organizations, setting the standard for fine hand crafts. Our members are recognized throughout the country and the world for their creativity and technical expertise.
The Mission of the League of NH Craftsmen is to advance, cultivate and champion excellence in fine craft. We pursue that mission through educational programming, leadership initiatives, marketplace strategies and support services.
For over 90 years, the nonprofit League of NH Craftsmen has promoted fine craft, supported craftsmen, and educated and enriched New Hampshire’s communities. More than 700 juried members produce exceptional contemporary and traditional craft in a wide range of media areas.
Visitors shop year-round in our seven affiliated Fine Craft Galleries which feature outstanding hand-made craft and offer engaging demonstrations and workshops for all ages and interests. Exhibitions at the League’s Headquarters location in Concord regularly celebrate the artistry of our members and guest artists. The Annual Craftsmen’s Fair serves as the League’s largest fundraiser, allowing the organization to provide services to our craftsmen and the public throughout the year.

DEMO SALES
Learn from the craftsmen! The Demo/Sales booths allow space for the craftsmen to demonstrate how they create, as well as a sales area where guests may purchase the fine craft they have learned about and have seen made! The Demo/Sales booths are marked on the Fair map – see tent letters below.
Wood Carving with Scott Fogg: Tent R
See all aspects of Scott’s wood carving process from design conception through final finishing. He will demonstrate using chainsaws, rotary carving tools, grinders, sanders and even a propane torch, to show how he creates his whimsical wooden creations.
Raku Pots with Richard Foye: Tent G /Aug 3-6
Be amazed as pre-fired pots are heated to 1600 degrees! Various combustibles will be added to cause crackle smoked effects and metallic luster. The finished piece will be displayed, and the results explained.
Basketmaking with Jeffrey Gale: Tent J
Using a shaving horse, drawknife, and pounding mallet, Jeffrey will use ash splints for weavers to weave a traditional New England market/garden basket. He will be shaving freshly split billets, using his drawknife, the old fashioned way. All aspects of making a traditional basket in this manner, starting with a log, will be displayed.
Handpan Instruments with Michael Lindskog: Sculpture Garden
A handpan is functional steel art. Each instrument is a unique, handmade oneof-a-kind piece. Michael will be sharing examples of the instruments at various stages of completion, allowing attendees to see and hear the process of creating these fascinating works of art.
Large Scale Pottery with Stephen Procter: Sculpture Garden
Learn the throwing and building techniques used to make monumental vessels! Fairgoers may be invited to help lift and place thrown sections onto pieces in process.
Oil Painting with Margaret Shipman: Tent G/Aug 7-11
Invited Guest painter Margaret Shipman will demonstrate her unique style on a large-scale oil canvas - adding multiple painted and collaged elements featuring images of plants and pollinators found in New England.
Pottery with Maureen Mills and Steven Zoldak: Tent E
Maureen and Steve will demonstrate throwing on a potter’s wheel both functional and decorative stoneware with beautiful finishing techniques. Watch as they do their specialty surface decorations in a variety of methods, including their slip trailing technique.
