Welcome to the League’s 88th Annual Craftsmen’s Fair! 2020 was a year filled with separation, and we are so grateful that 2021 is a year to reconnect. Our craftsmen are reconnecting with one another and the experience of being a League member as they gather at the base of Mount Sunapee. We are welcoming our guests back to the Fair as this iconic NH summertime event makes its dynamic return to the Fairgrounds! We hope you enjoy the sights, sounds and of course amazing craft that has arisen from the past year. We look ahead with excitement and hope for sunshine and the celebration of handcraft that is the Annual Craftsmen’s Fair. Miriam Carter, Executive Director

Art, Craft & Design…
PETS: Pets are NOT allowed on fairgrounds. It is a violation of NH State law to leave your pets in cars. Handicap parking located in Lot#1 near Spruce Lodge. There are also a limited number of electric scooters available for rent. To reserve a scooter, stop by the Fair office or call League HQ and leave a message for a call back – 603-224-3375 x 0 Chairlift skyrides: Open 10 AM - 3:00 PM Daily. Tickets available at the base of the Chairlift. Round trip fares: $11 for ages 5-12. $17 for ages 13+. Children 4 and under ride for free. (Trip time approximately 12 minutes one-way) Our Mission:The Mission of the League of NH Craftsmen is to advance, cultivate and champion excellence in fine craft. We pursue that mission through educational programming, leadership initiatives, marketplace strategies and support services.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE LEAGUE OF NH CRAFTSMEN For nearly 90 years, the nonprofit League of NH Craftsmen has promoted fine craft, supported craftsmen, and educated and enriched New Hampshire’s communities. Nearly 700 juried members produce exceptional contemporary and traditional craft in a wide range of media areas. Visitors shop in our seven affiliated Fine Craft Galleries which feature outstanding hand-made craft and engaging demonstrations and workshops for all ages and interests. Exhibitions at our League’s Headquarters location in Concord regularly celebrate the artistry of our members, and special events are held to help members reach new audiences and provide additional sales opportunities. The League’s story begins in the mid-1920’s when Mrs. Mary Coolidge and A. Cooper Ballantine joined forces to promote craft in New Hampshire. By 1932, the League of New Hampshire Arts and Crafts had been established, and the first official League shop was opened in Wolfeboro. The following year, the first Craftsmen’s Fair was held, making it the oldest outdoor craft fair in the country. Rebranded as the League of NH Craftsmen in 1968, the League continues to be recognized as one of the country’s leading fine arts organizations, setting the standard for fine hand crafts. Our members are recognized throughout the country and the world for their creativity and technical expertise.

The Demo/Sales booths allow space for the craftsmen to demonstrate how they create their craft as well as a sales area so you may purchase the fine craft you have learned about and have seen them make! The Demo/Sales booths are marked on the map - Tents A, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, and Y.
Ribbon Basket Weaving with Peggy Thrasher: Tent A
See the phases of creating baskets out of ribbon. Peggy will be demonstrating how she makes her baskets. Have a question about a particular stage of creation? Peggy will have baskets at each stage to look at as well.
Folk Art Make and Take with Art Anderson: Tent D
Art Anderson, a folk artist who works in wood, invites children to make a simple, wooden toy that they will take home. The process is simple; tailored to youngster’s abilities. Parents are encouraged to participate. The tent is free, and best of all, fun.
The children’s activities with Art Anderson are generously sponsored by Bev and Dan Wolf. Wood Turning with Cynthia Ellis: Tent E
See the creation of seam rippers and magne-dots through wood stock turning. Images of the sewing tools Cynthia has designed as well as images of her shop and creative craft history will be on display. In addition, an assortment of wood blocks and dowel pins will be set up, from which interested observers can select and assemble to be turned into handles that will become rug hooks, on the spot. Fair goers will then get to see the finished tools in action!
Art Quilts with Michele O’Neil Kincaid: Tent F
See the making of a quilt over 9 days from selecting the design, choosing fabrics to piece and/or appliqué, making the 3 layer “sandwich”, adding quilting, and binding the finished piece. Interested in the fabrics? Watch mono printing, fabric manipulation techniques, adding a wide array of embellishments and more. All you could want to know about the making of an Art quilt!

Maureen and Steve will demonstrate throwing on a potter’s wheel both functional and decorative stoneware with beautiful finishing techniques. Watch as they do their specialty surface decorations in a variety of methods, including their slip trailing technique.
Glassblowing with Hethre Larivee: Tent H
Hethre will be demonstrating glassblowing using flamework and lathe techniques to create blown glass ornaments, vessels, and various sculptures. A TV and Go-Pro will be set up to give the audience a birds-eye view of the glassblowing process while Hethre answers questions and explains the history of the craft. Finally, a raffle will be available for Fair goers to submit their own designs for the chance to see Hethre create it!
Raku Pots with Richard Foye: Tent I (August 7th - 10th)
Be amazed as pre-fired pots are heated to 1600 degrees! Various combustibles will be added to cause crackle smoked effects and metallic luster. The finished piece will be displayed, and the results explained.

See the construction of large vessel forms by the stacking of thrown sections. Fair goers may be invited to help lift and place thrown sections onto pieces in process.

As a child, Fred was in awe of that craggy stone face on the side of Cannon Mountain in Franconia, NH. In 1992 he carved a series of jewelry tributes to the Old Man. In 2003, the rugged profile which had represented the enduring spirit and grit of the people of NH toppled down. It lives on in our series of jewelry designs.

Clay Tent: Tent V; All Day; All Ages Welcome Learn ceramic techniques and take home your own unique air-dry clay tile during the Annual Craftsmen’s Fair! Local potter Molly Harper will demonstrate methods such as stamping, engraving, relief carving, pinch pots, and more while you create your own clay tile to take home. Instructions will be provided for finishing your pieces at home with common acrylic paints and other art supplies. Pre-register at Information Tent S. Traditional Blacksmithing with Garry Kalajian: Tent B; All Day Garry will demonstrate traditional blacksmithing techniques: heating iron and steel bars in a coal forge and hammering them into door latches, candle holders, letter openers, and other objects. Garry will have his pedal-powered forge blower, and Fair goers will have the opportunity to assist. The Blacksmithing Tent is generously supported by the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts. Introduction to Hand papermaking with Angie Follensbee-Hall: Tent T; 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, 3:00 PM Learn about hand papermaking as we explore basic techniques and experiment with different botanical ingredients. No experience is necessary. Papermaking is a perfect medium for beginners, and for experienced artists it is unlike any other medium! We will learn the history of papermaking, fundamental materials, and tools, and then dive into sheet formation using beautiful flowers and other botanical items. Students will leave with their “wet leaves” and be offered ideas for further exploration and development. Pre-register at Information Tent S Fee $15 per person
