Nevada Health & Bioscience Corporation (NHBC) is a nonprofit organization with the mission of developing healthcare research, education, and clinical opportunities to transform Southern Nevada’s healthcare system – increasing access, strengthening care, and building state-of-the-art infrastructure.
The NHBC development corporation model has proven its value and efficiency in Nevada. Since the completion of our first project, the Kirk Kerkorian Medical Education Building at UNLV, we have continued conversations with the community, legislators, philanthropists and other leaders about why our model of doing business makes sense and creates the most impact. At its core, a development corporation follows a publicprivate partnership model, with multiple funding source investments, transparency and building and operations efficiency as its cornerstones.
NHBC was established and tasked to complete one project but given its immediate success, the demand for two new projects ultimately emerged. This quarter NHBC announced plans for its next major projects in the Silver State: The Southern Nevada Public Health Laboratory & Community Blood Bank and the Mental and Physical Health Building. Both projects will exist on the 9-acre site, owned by NHBC, adjacent to the Kirk Kerkorian Medical Education Building, located at 625 Shadow Lane in Las Vegas. With these new projects, NHBC will continue in its founding mission to support and grow academic medicine while strengthening the medical services available in the Southern Nevada and Greater Las Vegas community.
NHBC is pleased to be working collaboratively with UNLV, the Kerkorian School of Medicine and community physician groups to provide a unique array of children’s services in its mental and physical health building. This is our beginning attempt at a coordinated multispecialty approach all under one roof whose primary mission is to serve kids and their families. The public health laboratory and community blood bank will provide enhanced public testing services and boost local options for increased medical programming desperately needed in Southern Nevada. This will result in reduced costs and time for testing and, ultimately, help keep locals from having to leave town for vital services.
At NHBC, we believe the contribution of ideas, positive energy and resources within a collaborative environment yield the most sustainable results in any environment. We are proving we can advance health care opportunities with this model in Southern Nevada. Together. We are grateful to our bold and thoughtful leadership on the Board of Directors who guide the vision and implementation of the NHBC’s mission, and its exciting future.
We also value the leadership and partnership of UNLV, state and local government who invest in the NHBC mission, including Clark County, the City of Las Vegas, the Governor’s Office, the State Legislature, corporate partners and community philanthropists. In aggregate, these entities have led the way with the contribution of invaluable land and hundreds of millions of dollars towards these projects. With NHBC’s inclusive model and expanding community footprint, increased healthcare access and infrastructure, new services and new jobs are at the forefront for Southern Nevada.
Thank you,
Maureen E. Schafer President and CEO
