Amos Doolittle Did A Lot Amos Doolittle was an invaluable talent; a copper and silversmith whom provided the world with engravings of historic events, maps and portraits at his shop in New Haven, Connecticut at the site where College Square, Yale University exists today. Doolittle was born in Cheshire in 1754 and lived to be 78. His highly prized work includes four prints depicting the Battles of Lexington & Concord. The humble 21-year old joined ranks with the “Governor's Second Company of Guards” when no sooner a call to arms was the directive of Captain Benedict Arnold to head towards the Massachusetts front. In April of 1775 Doolittle, in collaboration with another artist, 18-year old Ralph Earle, sketched and painted battle scenes to be printed in Doolittle’s shop. They were readied for sale and advertised in The Connecticut Journal “to be sold at the store of Mr. James Lockwood, near the College, in New Haven.”
Engraving by Amos Doolittle created/Published 1787 titled: The Looking Glass for 1787. A house divided against itself cannot stand.
Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division Washington, D.C. 20540
Doolittle’s engraving seems particularly relevant considering the election debacle being endured today...he may have digressed that the presidential election of 2016 is so different than any before. Upon close inspection, the artwork portrays a humorous scene pitting the “Federals” against the “Antifederals.” Connecticut is front and center of the satire. Notice the spelling of “Connecticutt” on the wagon that is sinking in the mud representing a country mired in debt. Connecticut was the 5th of 9 states to ratify the U.S. Constitution (initially drafted in Philadelphia); contributing the “Connecticut Compromise” responsible for the two-house legislative system in place today. This year of 2016 holds a new election, but old issues; debt, freedom, justice...and history repeats itself... Presently, an Amos Doolittle original copperplate engraving c. 1798 is for sale through “The Old Print Shop” in New York City for $30,000.

WatersideLane Clinton, Connecticut, 06413 “Houses” Historic Momentos (especially houses!)
The Cannon at Waterside Lane dedicated in 1950 on Clinton’s Waterside Green points towards Long Island Sound. The Cannon was British-made artillery used in the War of 1776 with markings that date 1790 and 1805. The cannon changed hands several times in England before it was shipped to America when it was grounded in a wreck on Saybrook Bar. Ultimately, the residents of Clinton gained access to the weapon and ironically, used it to defend their shores from the British (what goes around comes around...). The cannon was successfully detonated against the British attack in the Harbor in 1812, which caused them to retreat. The rest is history...
Waterside Lane, Clinton is a treasure trove of mint, Early American homes dating from 1675. By Connecticut Shoreline standards, the Silas Wilcox House c. 1800 at 64 Waterside Lane may be considered small, but what it lacks in square footage is overshadowed by its simplistic beauty and charm. Its original, and characteristically New England, classic attributes exude a minimalist living style that is being emulated by the tiny house movement taking hold across the United States. The mature maples along the lane burst into color in October.
39 Vineyard Place, Guilford, Connecticut
W
hen she was young, Janice would ride her bike from her home on Fair Street near the Guilford Green, down to and along the Guilford Coast. Of particular interest was the large residence (now 39 Vineyard Place) under construction on the water; owned by prominent New Haven manufacturer D. Spencer Berger as a “summer cottage.” Each time Janice would pass the home she wondered what it would be like to live in such a magnificent structure; never envisioning herself as lady of the house. In 1960, Janice realized her dream when her husband, John, purchased the “cottage”; both of them believing it to be large enough for their family and attractive enough to keep their five children coming home. They also wanted to make sure that there was room enough for future inlaws and grandchildren. Decades later, stories abound from the couple’s children, their spouses and grandchildren centered on the memorable events that took place at the “cottage” including numerous engagement parties, four weddings, and 50+ years of annual family reunions and Thanksgiving dinners. Also unforgettable are the summer evenings in the 1970’s when the Jazz recording duo of Willie Ruff and Dwike Mitchell would entertain guests; not to mention the memorable visit by the Dalai Lama in the 1980’s.
One of Guilford’s iconic shoreline residences, 39 Vineyard Place was conceived by renowned New Haven architect, Douglas Orr and completed in 1930. The 6,600 square foot residence is a formidable structure composed predominantly of Stoney Creek granite and has stood tall during all of Mother Nature’s occasional tantrums, including the devastating hurricane of 1938. One of Mr. Orr’s signature details are the “porthole” windows located in the Family Great Room. The library addition boasts spectacular views and was completed in 1978 with a cedar shingle façade. This addition was designed by Frank Winder and Associates and constructed by The Field Company. Adjacent to the library, and of particular note, is the spacious dining room featuring endless views of Long Island Sound; but memorable because of its curved, ribbed ceiling designed to resemble “carlins” used in the “overhead” of a ship’s cabin. The large kitchen area features a separate prep area, center island and breakfast nook overlooking the water. This was the hub of activity for the numerous outdoor club functions, and for fund raising events held by Janice in support of The Washington National Cathedral. The second floor welcomes guests with six bedrooms while the third floor beckons guests to a game of pool overlooking Long Island Sound. John was an avid yachtsman. His summer commute consisted of boarding his tender, moored in the adjacent cove and “commuting” out to his 48 foot sailboat which he kept around the point at Sachems Head Harbor. The railway leading to the boathouse provided easy storage during the winter months. While the home and location are nothing short of breathtaking, many of the family’s memories revolve around the simple pleasures they all enjoyed such as clamming in the cove, swimming, tennis and of course some spectacular bonfires on the beach. This offering represents a once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase one of the Shoreline’s iconic waterfront homes. A value at $4,995,000 For a virtual tour of the property please visit http://realestateofcoastalct.com/472824
