Amos Doolittle Did A Lot Amos Doolittle was an invaluable talent; a copper and silversmith whom provided the world with engravings of historic events, maps and portraits at his shop in New Haven, Connecticut at the site where College Square, Yale University exists today. Doolittle was born in Cheshire in 1754 and lived to be 78. His highly prized work includes four prints depicting the Battles of Lexington & Concord. The humble 21-year old joined ranks with the “Governor's Second Company of Guards” when no sooner a call to arms was the directive of Captain Benedict Arnold to head towards the Massachusetts front. In April of 1775 Doolittle, in collaboration with another artist, 18-year old Ralph Earle, sketched and painted battle scenes to be printed in Doolittle’s shop. They were readied for sale and advertised in The Connecticut Journal “to be sold at the store of Mr. James Lockwood, near the College, in New Haven.”

Doolittle’s engraving seems particularly relevant considering the election debacle being endured today...he may have digressed that the presidential election of 2016 is so different than any before. Upon close inspection, the artwork portrays a humorous scene pitting the “Federals” against the “Antifederals.” Connecticut is front and center of the satire. Notice the spelling of “Connecticutt” on the wagon that is sinking in the mud representing a country mired in debt. Connecticut was the 5th of 9 states to ratify the U.S. Constitution (initially drafted in Philadelphia); contributing the “Connecticut Compromise” responsible for the two-house legislative system in place today. This year of 2016 holds a new election, but old issues; debt, freedom, justice...and history repeats itself...

Presently, an Amos Doolittle original copperplate engraving c. 1798 is for sale through “The Old Print Shop” in New York City for $30,000.

hen she was young, Janice would ride her bike from her home on Fair Street near the Guilford Green, down to and along the Guilford Coast.

The second floor welcomes guests with six bedrooms while the third floor beckons guests to a game of pool overlooking Long Island Sound.

John was an avid yachtsman. His summer commute consisted of boarding his tender, moored in the adjacent cove and “commuting” out to his 48 foot sailboat which he kept around the point at Sachems Head Harbor. The railway leading to the boathouse provided easy storage during the winter months.

While the home and location are nothing short of breathtaking, many of the family’s memories revolve around the simple pleasures they all enjoyed such as clamming in the cove, swimming, tennis and of course some spectacular bonfires on the beach.
