by Brandon Mayer The Lions Thrift Store is facing difficulty recently, with donations being dropped off outside the store outside of business hours. Store coordinator, Elva Patterson Rutters, made several Facebook posts on the What’s Up, Winchester page pleading with members of the public to be more conscientious about what they are donating, and when.

Many members of the North Dundas community likely grew accustomed to the old Lions Thrift Store location on Main St E, which

had a small covered vestibule where donations were often left by residents outside of business hours. The store has since been moved, after facing a long list of challenges related to the relocation, to a location on St. Lawrence St in an old Anglican church. The Times contacted Elva to learn more about what has changed.

“People with good intentions drop their treasures off at the Lions Thrift Store outside of store hours, which not only creates an eyesore, but also diminishes the usefulness and quality of the donations” Elva

told the Times. Items that are left outside of business hours are vulnerable to the elements and to infestation by pests. Items that become soaked in rainwater or attract bugs then have to be thrown out, which causes further issues for the store, because volunteer time is wasted, and it becomes more difficult for the store to stay within the Township’s weekly garbage bag limit. “Rain, overnight dew, and bugs infiltrate the bags and boxes, which results in more garbage than our allowed six bags a week,” Elva

Comments on social media showed support for the Thrift Store and for Elva’s efforts to limit donations to clean items dropped off during store hours. Several comments suggested a donation bin to keep donations clean and dry if dropped off when the store is closed, but Elva told the Times that this is not possible, as their landlord has asked that they not have outdoor bins.

The Lions Thrift Store supports the local area by putting all profits back into the local community in the form of individual donations and the sponsoring of sports such as hockey, curling, and skating. The store is run by volunteers who must sort all donations to ensure that they are in an appropriate condition for sale. They discard items that are broken, dirty, smelling of smoke, or covered in animal hair. Donations also must be appropriate for the current season, because the store does not have any storage space available.

Despite the trouble that the store has been facing with the quality and timing of donations, Elva’s social media posts make it clear that she is seeking to educate, not blame.

She strongly credits the community with keeping the store going, telling the Times that “without community support, the shop would not exist.”

A Family of Support in Foodland Winchester

by Hayley Bedford 2020 was a year of crisis for almost everyone on the planet. Many people found themselves in unfamiliar routines; working from home, schooling from home, and

being isolated from our loved ones. This was difficult to comprehend for most adults, but the impact that it had on some of our youth and children was huge.

This is where the Sobey’s

Foundation initiative, ‘A Family of Support’, stepped up and endeavoured to raise funds to help support and improve Child and Youth Mental Health services across Canada. They did this through a store-based initiative run in September. Customers are asked to donate just $2 when they shop, with all the proceeds going to support initiatives for Child & Youth Mental Health.

This could only be achieved with the cooperation and dedication of local store owners like Dan Pettigrew of Foodland Winchester. “Kids’ mental health is incredibly important and it is something that is incredibly important to me personally” says Dan. Last year, with the help of the Downtown Revitalization Committee, many other local businesses, and overwhelming customer support, the Winchester store raised $12,490.00 during this event.

Shortly after that, Dan hosted another fundraiser with Al Graham and Fries for Charity and raised an additional $2,500. In total, Foodland Winchester raised $14,990 which Sobeys matched, making the total donation to the foundation $29,980!

Following this, Dan was also lucky enough to be a part of the virtual CHEO Telethon, along with another Sobey’s colleague, to present a cheque for $106,000 from all of the participating stores in our region. This included all the Sobey’s Foodland’s and Freshco stores in Ottawa and the surrounding areas.

To date, the Family of Support initiative has raised over $3,000,000. Dan says “We are looking to hit another home run this year!”

This year, the fundraising event is being held instore between September 16 and 30.

A short time ago, a knock on our door at home was opened to a smartly turned out, uniformed Navy League officer. Randy Murray is the Commanding Officer of Navy League Cadet Corp (NLCC) Assiniboine. Always a pleasure to see Randy who has done an outstanding job with his team leading his young cadets through the COVID challenges. We were surprised to see him at our door in uniform. He informed us that NLCC Assiniboine had made their decision on the award of the two medallions, and that he was here to present the civilian supporter award – to the astonished lady standing September 22, 2021

next to me.

Now Carol is not an award or kudo seeker – quite the opposite. In the thirtyplus years together, all of her many church and community endeavours have been quietly contributed without fuss or bother. She keeps her head down and gets on with the job at hand, pitching in wherever she feels she can. Lots of hugs, lots of “thank you’s” have been her reward. While this formal acknowledgment was a delightful surprise, she was confused as to why she had been chosen. After 38 busy years in Defence, the last six in the office of Minister Peter McKay, she came to Kemptville not wanting to be embroiled in another organization. She did, however, want to contribute to the community in some way. And so, it would seem, she has, with the cadets.

bake sales to raise money, or for special cadet events and celebrations, her driving of cadets to and from their spots on numerous Tag days, her attending every event, her help in reconciling the new uniform inventor, her hours of selling duck race tickets in businesses in town, her labour-intensive work in re-tiling the back NLCC office floor, and her help with the carpentry, renovations, and painting of the class and Board spaces. These activities were visible. Less evident were her enthusiastic partnering in the financial investment that made the naval symbology in the armoury, the new sets of trophies recognizing the annual achievement of the individual cadets in the two corps, and the renovations possible.

I am very grateful that the officers of Assiniboine were not keeping their heads down, but rather were watching and appreciating the quiet contribution of this quietly contributing Kemptville citizen. Both Carol and I were very touched by this thoughtful gesture. But for me, it reinforced that this lady sure is a keeper!

Next week, it’s all about the cadets.

OFA and local federations speak up for Lactalis fined agriculture with federal candidates for environmental violations

by Crispin Colvin, Executive Member, OFA Throughout the month of September, all levels of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) have been actively involved in advocating for the betterment of the agriculture industry and our rural communities. From county and regional federations to the OFA board of directors, our representatives have been engaging federal candidates across the Province, ensuring the needs, priorities and opportunities for agriculture remained at the forefront of their political platforms.

As a grassroots organization, OFA believes in the importance of a unified voice. Utilizing and mobilizing our local federations has been vital to our federal advocacy efforts. One-on-one conversations, mixed with regional all-candidates meetings, have been a powerful tool in communicating key issues and messages, while personalizing them based on local interests and concerns.

Throughout this election, many of our federations have taken the initiative to reach out to candidates in their communities and plan opportunities for member engagement.

These meetings provided the chance for farmers, agri-business owners, rural residents and community leaders to meet their candidates, speak up for agriculture, voice local issues, and reiterate the needs of the region and Province. I believe these meetings were a valuable way to understand each candidate’s perspective and perception of our sector and for our members to engage with future leaders.

I had the opportunity to attend the all-candidates meeting hosted by the Lambton Federation of Agriculture and enjoyed the experience.

I found it to be an excellent opportunity to connect with the local candidates and understand each political party's platform and its level of knowledge of agriculture and food in Ontario. These meetings offered the chance to share our priorities, edu-

cate federal candidates, and brainstorm how to work collaboratively to ensure our sector remains strong, profitable and viable.

To further communicate our key messages, OFA’s executive board members targeted federal candidates in urban ridings to reiterate priorities of the industry, collaborate on economic growth opportunities and discuss the benefits investments agriculture and rural Ontario can have on the provincial economy.

OFA board members continued to meet virtually with members of all political parties, bringing important messages about the need for environmental sustainability, a fair carbon pricing policy, revisions to the current business risk management programs and access to skilled labour. These priorities have been outlined and shared in a detailed package that was distributed to all levels of the organization to ensure we approached the election with a unified voice.

by Brandon Mayer Winchester dairy production company, Lactalis Canada Inc. (formerly known as Parmalat), has been fined $620,000 for violating the Environmental Protection Act. The fine, which includes $110,000 payable to Queen’s University to support the Beaty Water Research Centre, was imposed upon Lactalis’ conviction for three violations between 2017 and 2019.

The offences committed relate to discharging odours into the environment and the negative impacts that such odours have had on nearby residences and businesses.

A statement released by the Government of Ontario details these negative impacts.

“The strong odour caused area residents to stay indoors with their windows closed, and to be woken from their sleep, and in some cases, ultimately seeking sleep accommodation elsewhere” the statement reads.

Further to the discharge of odours, the company also violated the operating limits of its on-site sewage treatment plant in 2017 after beginning to operate a milk microfiltration system that increased wastewater flow. This caused “septic conditions and significant odour” according to the Government of Ontario statement, and residents continued to lodge complaints about the stench in 2018 and 2019. Aware of how things are unrolling from the “powers that be”, one tries to envision what lies ahead.

What will life look like in a month? If everything goes as planned, what might one be doing on October 16, 2021?

Looking at the scheduled events coming up, there are more entertainment options now than there were last year, but still not as many opportunities as there were three years ago. Yet, an event like the upcoming TRUE STORIES evening, from A Bunch of People Arts and Events (ABOP) didn’t even exist three years ago.

On October 16, 2021 starting at 7 pm, an evening of people telling TRUE STORIES from their lives, accompanied by live music, will be held in Winchester.

The brain child of Harmony Koiter, this evening will be directed by herself and Marie-Thérèse Robinson.

When asked what drew Harmony to this concept, she explained: “We have all been away from each other for so long. It used to be we would sit together as friends September 22, 2021

and, through the telling of our stories, we felt closer.

Picture our community coming together after nineteen months of isolation. Everybody gathers in the gorgeous sanctuary of the Winchester United Church. The crowd sits down with their family and friends to listen to their neighbours share stories that they’ve only told their closest friends. Now picture those stories being set to beautiful instrumentals. A guitar accents a pivotal moment in a journey. A piano builds suspense. A ukulele drives anticipation. The authors takes you to a vulnerable place and you’re held in the space that was their life - glancing through an open window to their experience and internal sojourn. What an evening it will be!”.

Ten local authors have teamed up with five local musicians to deliver a captivating evening of storytelling and instrumental music.

This evening of TRUE STORIES is filled with bravery, triumph, laughter, and twisted limbs. Come listen to strong, life changing, and sometimes stinky life events from people you just might know, while also giving to

charity.

The TRUE STORIES evening tickets are $15 for adults, $10 dollars for youth between the ages of 13-18 years. A 10% discount is being offered to group reservations of 4 or more people.

impacts, financial impacts, and residents reporting a decrease in the enjoyment of their properties.

Lactalis has spent $17.39 million between 2017 and 2020 to upgrade the sewage treatment system. Many area residents have noticed significant improvements in the odour issue since the upgrades took place, with very few complaints being made on social media in recent months. However, a few odour incidents took place last month which the company blamed on several power outages that caused wastewater to sit in hot lagoons.

Public opinion on the Parmalat / Lactalis odour problem has been consistently divided. Over several years, social media, particularly on Facebook through the What’s Up, Winchester page, was filled with complaints from both Winchester residents who were annoyed or woken up by the smell, and from potential town visitors who were put off their dining by the stench. This often ignited heated debates with other seasoned residents who were peeved at newcomers who didn’t do their research on what was a generally well known issue. There was also anger and fear that pressure from the public would drive Lactalis, which is among the largest employers in the area, out of town.

To some, the conviction

and fine imposed may provide closure for past hardship, and a reassurance that a problem which has been slowly on the mend for years will be far less likely to recur after such a conviction.

The Times reached out to Lactalis for comment and received this prepared statement in return.

“As per the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks’ Court Bulletin on September 10, 2021, Lactalis Canada voluntarily pled guilty to the noted offences under the Environmental Protection Act and accepts the associated fine including the payment to Queen’s University that will benefit the Beaty Water Research Centre. As part of our continued commitment and efforts in mitigating related odours and enhancing the wastewater treatment process, Lactalis Canada completed a three-year, $17.39 million Wastewater Treatment Modernization Project in 2020 to address these issues.

As a long-standing member of Winchester community, Lactalis Canada is proud of its deep ties to the region and places great importance on having a positive impact on the community and the safety and wellbeing of its members.”

Social media activity has been unusually minimal regarding the conviction.

The rocky road to Dublin

by David Shanahan Finally, after almost two years confined to the neighbourhood, I was heading back to Dublin, my home town, and looking forward to two weeks visiting with my 97 year old mother and wandering around the streets of the city. I love travel, and I always think of it as an adventure. But when you travel with Air Canada, there is an added factor of uncertainty and the potential for something really strange to happen. And this time was no exception to that rule.

I am happy to report that Air Canada’s record for sending my luggage to a different destination than my own is now at just 50%, a drop from previous excursions. It used to run about 60%: out of every ten journeys, my luggage and I would be separated six times. One time, I went to Dublin and my luggage went to Frankfurt. As soon as they became aware of the

problem, Air Canada jumped into action and returned my bag to Toronto, not Ottawa.

It finally arrived in Dublin a few days after me.

One other time, they booked me on a connecting flight from Heathrow to Dublin, and it turned out when I reached London, that no such flight to Dublin existed. Air Canada had booked me on to an Air Canada flight that did not exist. That was quite a feat. Another memorable occasion was when they delayed a 9pm flight until 1am, then cancelled it altogether because one washroom was out of order. They arranged for us to stay in a hotel, but when we arrived, the hotel had no record of us at all. Not having any room for us, they found an alternative hotel, to which we walked, dragging our luggage at 2.30 in the morning.

We ended up getting to bed at 3am, and had to be back at the airport for an 8am flight.

Great start to a vacation.

This journey was much less adventurous. We were

an hour late leaving Toronto because they didn’t have enough baggage handlers to handle baggage. That was understandable, given the current staff shortages everywhere. But they did provide the usual “apology” for the delay, thanking us all for our patience and understanding.

This always causes me to smile, as patience and understanding are in short supply when you travel with Air Canada. This time, however, things went rather smoothly from that point on.

My main worry this time had nothing to do with Air Canada in fact. It was a matter of passports or, to be specific, the fact that I didn’t have one.

My Canadian passport had expired and I applied to have it renewed. Being assured that the process took about 20 days, I sent my application in by courier, and it was received on July 6. By the time I was ready to leave for Dublin on September 1, there was still no sign of a new passport, but I decided to use my Irish

one, hoping the Canadian one would arrive before I returned from Ireland. Otherwise, according to the government, I would not be allowed back into the country, all because of COVID regulations.

I was certain all would be well, and Maggie, my soulmate, could forward the new passport to me in Dublin before I had to return.

No problem. I had emailed the passport people about my application and, the day after arriving in Dublin, they responded to tell me, and I quote: “Your application has not been examined yet nor has a file been created in your name”. What happened to the 20-day promise? This was almost two months after they got my application!

Then Air Canada got involved again. Canada eased restrictions on non-essential travel on September 6. A week later, on a Saturday and just a few days before my return, they sent me an email explaining that new requirements meant I had to have a

COVID test within 72 hours of departure. Last minute chaos, as I had to find a place for a test, get a certificate that I tested negative, get an ARRCan certificate, and all in a couple of days. Great fun, and a strange way to spend the last few days in Dublin.

Oh yes, still no Canadian passport.

On the day I left Dublin, I got to the airport and the Air Canada people went through my paperwork, which was fine with me. Then they asked to see proof that I was a Canadian citizen (not having a passport), and I showed them my Certificate of Citizenship from 1989. In Air Canada fashion, they were confused: it didn’t have an expiry date!

But the form they had to fill in on their computer demanded an expiry date. I explained that citizenship doesn’t have an expiry date, and they eventually, though it seemed to me, reluctantly, accepted the fact.

WHAT’S NEXT IN CLIMATE CHANGE? THE FACTS!

Biology, formerly Kemptville College The Kemptville Campus (formerly Kemptville College of Agricultural Technology) has a Climate Station, which has been providing daily climate data to Environment Canada, Atmospheric Environment Service, for close to a ninety years. This recording station was operated manually for 70 years by the greenhouse staff until the late 90s, when it became an automated recording station. The Kemptville Climate Station is one of the approximately 750 stations across Canada used for recording daily climate records. These climate data are recorded twice-a-day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

By 1986 the Annual Daily Mean Temperature at KCAT increased by 0.50 Celsius. During the fall of 1986, this author spent a few days at the Agricultural Climate Centre at the Ottawa Experimental Farm

recording annual daily mean temperatures on Campus that occurred over the previous 50 years. The data recorded showed that the annual mean daily temperature on Campus had increased by 0.5 0 C (1936-1986).

Global temperature recordings have been accurately measured since 1880. All climate data published before 1880 were considered unreliable because of lack of multiple data. The data show that the global mean surface temperature increased from 13.73 C (1880) to 14.18 C (1980), a 0.450 C increase, which is identical to the recordings at Kemptville College.

During the late 90s, Agricultural Students at KCAT, part of their Agricultural Climatology Course, had a field trip to the IMAX theatre in Hull, where they watched the movie “BLUE PLANET” on the big screen. In the movie, the astronauts filmed the atmosphere and the earth

out of the International Space Station. They commented: “Look how thin the atmosphere is, and how fragile this thin layer is towards an influx of Greenhouse Gases.

Atmospheric CO2 recording started at the atmospheric observation station at Mauna Loa, Hawaii.

During the 50s, one of the factors thought to affect the earth surface temperatures was the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide was determined to be a GREENHOUSE GAS (GHG) at that time. At the observatory on Mauna Loa, the atmospheric carbon dioxide is measured daily and averaged to monthly data since 1957.

The CO2 concentration in the atmosphere on August 1957 was 315 ppm, which increased to 419 ppm in August 2021 - a 33% increase.

Carbon Dioxide increase in the atmosphere increases the vapor content of the atmosphere.

This 33 % increase in atmospheric CO2 means that it does not reflect much of

the incoming short wave solar radiation, but it does strongly absorbs outgoing, long wave, terrestrial thermal radiation from the earth. The CO2 gas accumulated in the atmosphere sends the absorbed heat back towards the earth surface, subsequently warming the lowest layer of the atmosphere. Because of this warming effect, moisture is released into the atmosphere through transpiration by garden plants, agricultural crops, and trees. Moisture is also released by evaporation from water bodies (i.e. fog along the Rideau River). This transpiration and evaporation process increases the water vapor content of the lower atmosphere (20 km) to roughly 2%. This water vapor also absorbs terrestrial radiation and sends the heat back to the earth surface, warming up the earth even more. However, the water vapour content of the atmosphere is only temporary, as it returns to earth as precipitation.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions are often evaluated by many on a per capita basis, which is misleading.

For example: Canada’s per capita emission is 16.4 tons, Australia (16.8 tons), and Germany (9.10 tons). Canada is a signatory to this initiative. An annual growth rate of 0.4% in the soil carbon stocks, or 4% per year, in the first 30-40 cm of soil, would significantly reduce the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere related to human activities.

Dr. Kheira Jolin and Dr. Pierre de Moissac.

by Jane Adams Have you met Dr. Kheira Jolin and Dr. Pierre de Moissac? They have joined the Winchester District Memorial Hospital’s team as family physicians, providing obstetrical care as part of the family birthing program.

Dr. de Moissac grew up in Ste Anne, Manitoba where his father was a rural physician. “That’s what I always wanted to do too,” he says.

“I liked Obstetrics, Surgery and Psychiatry and decided I could do all three as a family physician.” Dr. de Moissac participated in the new graduate mentorship program at

WDMH, and has worked in Emergency and as a Hospitalist, looking after inpatients at the hospital and Dundas Manor.

Dr. Jolin grew up on the south shore of Montreal and moved to Ottawa after high school. Just like Dr. de Moissac, she really enjoyed every specialty she learned in medical school and decided to be a family doctor so she could ‘do it all’. She says Obstetrics has always held a special place in her heart.

Dr. de Moissac and Dr. Jolin now share a medical practice at the Nation River Health Clinic in Winchester.

They have chosen to move to Winchester and raise their children here. As a husbandand-wife team, they say one of the best things about the job is the commute!

“There are so many great things about family medicine,” says Dr. Jolin. “Every time I deliver a baby, I feel so lucky that the family allows me to be there for them in this special, unique, private moment.”

Both doctors offer bilingual services, as well as obstetrical care. They also accept referrals for prenatal follow-up. Both doctors also work in Emergency, and Dr. Jolin offers a half-day clinic in Embrun each week and has a research position at the University of Ottawa.

Brown, Susan Mary With great sadness, we announce the untimely passing of Susan Mary Brown of Chesterville, Ontario. Born in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Susan passed away at age 63 on the morning of September 1, 2021 at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Susan leaves behind her parents Janet and Kenneth Brown of Alexandria, sister Karen Brown, brother Douglas Brown, nephew Edwin Ye-Brown, stepson Richie Sommerdyk, and grieving relatives and friends. A loving daughter, Susan supported her parents all through the Covid pandemic. Susan had retired from her longtime position as a teacher’s aide working with autistic children for the Upper Canada School Board and had been enjoying the company of friends in Chesterville. She was artistically gifted, an expert quilter, and practiced many crafts. The family would like to thank the staff of the Heart Institute for everything they did for Susan. A private service will be held in her parents’ home and a commemoration in honour of Susan will be arranged at a later date. “This is a very exciting time for the Foundation” notes Managing Director, Kristen Casselman. “We have a new and skilled team with ‘a can-do attitude’.

Alex Howarth joins the team as Donor Services and Data Entry Clerk. He grew up in Winchester and has just returned home after living in Ottawa for several years. Alex spent 7 years with the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa, an army reserve regiment.

Company after spending a year working at Walt Disney World. Fun Fact: Alex’s first time coming to WDMH was when he accidently stabbed himself with an electric toothbrush!

Another new face at the WDMH Foundation is Justine Plummer who is now the Manager of Direct Mail & Events. Justine was born at WDMH and grew up in Chesterville. She has worked at Upper Canada Village, the Infinity Convention Centre in Ottawa, and the Township of North Dundas. Fun Fact: Justine has an Australian shepherd named Sam and she loves rock climbing. Sam stays home for that.

Two team members are also changing roles. Erin Kapcala has moved from the donor services role to Manager of Major and Planned Giving. Erin has been at the WDMH Foun-

dation since February 2020 and lives in Morewood.

Cindy Ault Peters is taking on a brand-new role as Campaign Assistant to support the staff and volunteer team which will work with the community to raise much-needed funds for a new Dundas Manor. Cindy lives in Brinston.

“We are here and ready to work with and support our donors - those who are grateful for WDMH and want to give back, and those who want to build a new, larger, and safer Dundas Manor,” sums up Kristen. “I very much look forward to celebrating many accomplishments with our team, donors, and community.”

By the time that you are all reading this, the good/bad political news will be over and done with, hopefully, and we can settle back down to winning the fight against the pandemic which all of us have a duty to do and can do a lot more decisively than any politician can by getting ourselves fully vaccinated!

Remember, this is a world issue, and all of us have part to play in resolving the outcome, not just "The Chosen Few" of a political ilk!

As I write this, some of our migratory Canada Geese are flying low overhead to land in the fields opposite and then to graze on the corn stubble and recuperate for their long trip south. Those not landing in the fields bear left to the end of the road where they can land on the welcoming waters of the South Branch. Their honking is about the only bird sound we are hearing at this time, but our regular birds like the Bluejays and Cardinals are

It’s such a delicate looking bird, but a very beautiful one, as were the two Monarch Butterflies that my wife and I watched through the window of a local restaurant as they went from red flower to red flower seeking the nectar that will provide them with the added strength to commence their migratory flight to Mexico.

How amazing is that, when you look at their delicate wings and bodies and try to envisage them traveling those thousands of miles to their winter accommodation?

take a few steps out of the house to get into my car to go a few yards/metres down the road to the shops or anywhere, they make me feel a little bit inadequate and in awe of them, which I should be and am! I hope that you feel the same way too, and enjoy every moment you get to see or be near them. Their lives are a lot shorter than ours and no doubt fraught with many more dangers than we could ever imagine, but somehow they survive and we get to enjoy them, so should be very grateful for the privilege.

According to a government statement, this funding is a part of the over $1.2 billion investment previously announced to help hospitals recover from financial pressures created and worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This funding will also help to ensure that Ontario’s hospitals are able to respond to any scenario as the COVID-19 pandemic evolves.

Many Ontario hospitals are struggling with annual funding deficits which have been exacerbated by the pandemic.

Want some good news about the current viral pandemic? Vaccines are taking effect across global populations and will eventually end this horrible nightmare. But we’ve yet to face, let alone resolve, the truly catastrophic health crisis plaguing humankind.

It’s a disease for which there are no vaccines. Worse still, it is a completely unnecessary health tragedy that will continue unabated to kill millions of people worldwide year after year. It’s called type 2 diabetes and the coronavirus has made it deadlier.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in the U.S., one in ten North Americans has diabetes. And 40% or more of the people who died of COVID-19 had diabetes. According to an analysis of CDC data, people aged 25 to 44 showed a sharp increase in diabetes deaths.

And this included long-term medical complications prior to death.

Why has this occurred? Type 2 diabetes, the main culprit, is a lifestyle disease. The human pancreas that produces insulin becomes exhausted due to obesity from too many calories and inactivity. School closures and restrictions have added to the problem for children.

If you have friends with diabetes, ask how they spend the day checking their numbers. If blood sugar is too high or too low, adjustments are vitally needed. They have to check with a laboratory every few weeks to see if the numbers are right. And often they may need to add insulin to survive.

For these millions of diabetics, atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries) is their mortal enemy. This results in a decreased flow of oxygenated blood to all organs of the body. The later diabetes is diagnosed, the longer this lack of oxygenated blood triggers degenerative medical complications.

One of the most frightening complications is the experience of sudden pain in the toe and then the sight of it gradually becoming black. Such toes must be amputated and sometimes later the leg is lost to the disease as well.

Another major complication is blindness or kidney failure, requiring either renal dialysis or a kidney transplant. About 50% of diabetics die of heart attack.

So far, nothing has been able to stop the pandemic of type 2 diabetes. Although it is unpopular to say it squarely, the main problem is obesity. The solution involves both a huge reversal in individual lifestyle choices and major systemic changes in the goods society produces, the way we build our communities, the economics of work and play, and more. It has been said many times, jokingly, that due to high sugar content of some breakfast cereals, it would be safer to eat the box! And everyone should step on the bathroom scale every day, as scales never lie.

Motivating individuals to take responsibility amid all the system problems is not a popular prescription. But changing behaviours would do more good in a few months of diligent effort than the billions of dollars being pumped into drugs, surgery, and public relations campaigns.

Here’s the key point. It’s been said that wars are too important to be left to generals. The type 2 diabetes pandemic is too important to be left to doctors. Let’s challenge the news media. Doctors need help in getting the message out that fighting type 2 diabetes is both a healthcare priority and a needed urgent fix to save our health care system from bankruptcy.

Seven tips to introduce children to sustainability

from Scouts Canada Talking to children about complex issues like sustainability can be daunting. Many young people are becoming exposed to climate change and its impacts through social media and conversations around them, making it an important discussion for families to have to help kids understand and address future challenges.

Sustainability is about building a better world for all, ensuring resources last for future generations, and promoting positive environmental and social impact focused on eliminating poverty, reducing inequalities and fighting climate change.

“Sustainable action is a core part of Scouting,” said Scouts Canada Youth Program Specialist, Siobhan Ward. “Scouts are active global citizens committed to doing their part to make the world a better place. Through action-based and collaborative learning, they discover kids have the power to make a big impact – no matter their age.”

Sustainability is a broad topic, and knowing how to broach the conversation can be tough. Scouts Canada is sharing seven tips to help families drive understanding and motivation, and help kids develop critical thinking, problem solving and leadership skills.

Encourage sustainable habits through play: Making a difference can be fun. While a documentary about climate change may not interest a five-year-old, gamification, play, and interactive activities are great ways to engage children, educate them about important issues, and also take action to make a positive impact on the environment or community. Try a game of climate charades to learn about the causes and impacts of climate change, or explore clean energy by September 22, 2021

building a miniature wind turbine. Scouts Canada has 265 activities themed around sustainability at scouts.ca/ resources/activity-finder.

Focus on their interests: The United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) offer families a variety of avenues to plan activities that engage their children’s interests. For those who love the water, “life below water” is a great SDG to focus on. Try reading books, or watching television shows and movies that feature sea creatures, then plan a shoreline cleanup, observe the health of a local pond, and focus on forming sustainable habits that benefit waterways.

If your child is more of a people person, “no poverty” might be a SDG to focus on.

Plan a few activities that support those in your community, like creating care packages for individuals experiencing homelessness, or spend a day performing random acts of kindness.

Foster critical thinking: Asking questions helps identify what children already think and know, and provides a starting point to discuss their ideas. Engage their problem solving skills to encourage them to develop solutions.

Use examples to offer context: Matching examples of scenarios that impact their lives, or lives of kids their own age, helps make an issue relatable and understandable.

Use an example they can see close to home, and then connect it to a global issue.

Focus on the positive: Sustainability can be overwhelming and scary if the focus is solely on the problems.

Having a solutions-oriented mindset enables families to take a positive approach and help young people feel empowered to take action, rather than be discouraged by problems that seem unsurmountable.

looking back over a year of activities demonstrates a bigger picture. Kids will feel proud of their accomplishments and motivated to continue making a difference.

Not sure where to get started? Scouts Canada is launching an eight-week sustainability-themed challenge called “Around the World in 60 Days” and is inviting young people across Canada to join in – they don’t have to be Scouts to participate.

Through fun and engaging activities rooted in sustainability, children and youth will embark on exciting story-driven adventures set virtually in eight different countries. The activities will introduce topics such as inequality, food security, melting icecaps, mental and physical heath, and encourage creative problem solving and reflection to drive awareness and development outcomes. The challenge runs October 4 – November 28, with a video released every Monday to launch each weekly challenge at scouts.ca/ around-the-world.

Girls, boys and young adults ages 5-26 can also join Scouts to participate as part of a group. Visit scouts.ca to register.

Learn together: Sustainability is a journey for everyone, and can be an enjoyable way to spend time together as a family. Whether volunteering at a local foodbank, or going zero waste camping, working together builds social connection, community spirit and shared values.

Track your progress: Making impact measurable helps underscore the value of every action and fosters a growth mindset. Create a chart or scrapbook and track any actions towards sustainable outcomes. Set goals and arrange celebrations for achieving milestones – like a special treat or fun activity.

Fries for charity at the Garden Party Market

Fries for Charity stall staffed by wonderful volunteers.

by Hayley Bedford Saturday , September 11, saw the return of the Planted Arrow’s Garden Party Market and what a day it was! The Town of Winchester was buzzing as shoppers walked through the market which was set up at two different locations between the St. Paul’s Community Garden and the Planted Arrow itself.

The community was also treated to live performances throughout the day from local band ‘Branded’ which was rocking on Sweet Corner in between the two market venues. The highlight of the day was Fries for Charity, which was raising funds for the continuation and development of the St. Paul’s Community Garden.

Garden would like to thank Al and Judy Graham and all of the Fries for Charity sponsors, donors, and volunteers who made this fundraiser possible. Many thanks are also extended to the community for making the event such a success. So far this season, the St. Paul’s Community Garden has grown over 514lbs of produce for Community Food Share clients.

Harvesting will continue into October, when the garden will be put to bed for the winter. St Paul’s Community Garden is a partnership between the St Paul’s Presbyterian Church and Community Food Share.

In 2021, approximately 25 volunteers helped regularly with planting, weeding, watering and harvesting the garden.

Between the hours of 11am and 2.30pm, the dedicated group of volunteers staffing the chip stand managed to raise a whopping $2,710.40. This money will be used for new projects at the Community Garden, and for regular expenses incurred in planting and maintaining the space.

One exciting new project that will be coming to the garden next year is a Butterfly Garden filled with native plants. The aim of this particular addition is to help educate the community about the importance of having these plants in our landscapes, and also to encourage pollinators into the Community Garden.

The Fries for Charity trailer and supplies for the event (potatoes, oil, etc.) were all donated thanks to the generosity of donors and sponsors, which means all funds raised during an event go directly to the cause they are supporting.

Value of construction doubles in North Dundas

by Jennifer Westendorp North Dundas is experiencing a construction boom. Just in the first eight months of this year, the declared value of construction has reached $52 million, compared to $32 million in all of 2020 and $25 million in 2019.

“We’re seeing exponential growth in North Dundas right now,” says Calvin Pol, Director of Building, Planning and Enforcement.

Over a 10-year period from 2011 to 2020, North Dundas averaged $22 million in declared construction value annually. That figure more than doubled in 2021 and the year isn’t even over yet.

“The building activity in this area is very strong” explained Calvin. “We have a number of local September 22, 2021

subdivision projects on the books, such as the Wylie Creek Estates Subdivision in Hallville, Winchester Meadows and Wellings of Winchester.”

He explains that Wellings is currently in its first phase which includes 63 units and a clubhouse.

“We’re seeing applications for new subdivisions that are coming forward from Chesterville, Morewood, and Winchester” he noted.

From January to August of this year, there were 105 new dwelling units built in North Dundas. That’s up from 87 last year and 58 in 2019. Over a 10-year period from 2011 to 2020, the number of new dwelling units in North Dundas averaged 46. So why the sudden boom?

“I’ve asked the ques-

tion: what is causing this?” says Mayor Tony Fraser.

“The answer I got was that people are looking for more space, bigger yards, and North Dundas has what they’re looking for�the small community feel, with a variety of amenities, including top notch facilities and parks.”

The Mayor noted that North Dundas makes it easy to do business here, because growth benefits

everyone in the community.

“Growth means better roads, more services, new facilities, and opportunities to do more for the people who live here. Without growth, you’ll have what you had before. To move forward as a township, we need to build our tax base.”

Calvin Pol says he’s not seeing any slow down when it comes to development. “For the fore-

seeable future, I can see this growth staying at an exponential rate. I believe the pace of development will be going strong for the next two years.”

Mayor Fraser says new neighbours are another added benefit of growth.

“You need a growing population to have fresh ideas and fresh thoughts,” he explained, “it’s a wonderful thing.”

by Savannah Coleman, Minister of Communications, North Dundas District High School We have successfully welcomed the Devils back after a long break. Students came back into the school on Tuesday, September 7 and have been adjusting well. Everyone is hoping for a smooth year, with no interruptions!

This school year is already looking brighter than last

year’s: students have lockers, extra-curricular activities, and events that are already in the works to look forward to.

There is COVID-19 screening that needs to be done every morning by students for the first two weeks of school, along with a Screening Verification form that needs to be signed by parents and shown to the homeroom or period 1 teacher. Students are continuing with two classes a day for the first two quadmesters and will hopefully be back to a 4-class day in February.

Student Council members met with a former ND Prime Minister and well-known individual in our county, Eric Duncan M.P., on Thursday, September 8. He shared some advice and what his goals and thoughts were during his time serving as our school’s PM. Mr. Duncan gave our Grade

Snarky is masked sarcasm. Sarcasm is masked anger. Anger is an expression of a fear and/or hurt. Snarkiness can also be a learned behavior from adults, especially from parents. Although individuals will try to persuade you that their sarcasm was a joke, the fact remains that it hurts and is not funny. Passing it off as humour is a justification for the behaviour. Somehow, if it is portrayed as a "joke", then that makes the person uttering the words think it validates its acceptability. Not so! When on the receiving end of snarky comments/responses, sarcasm, or anger, try to accept that the individual is simply hurting or fearful. When

people are putting you down, understand that they think that you are 'greater" in some way and therefore are trying to bring you down to their level.

The expression of the sarcasm or anger cannot be abusive in any way. That crosses the line of tolerance! NEVER is abuse to be accepted.

You can't change someone else, but you can process your own behaviour. If you are prone to a snarky disposition, ask yourself why? Dig deep and uncover those fears or hurts. It is a task requiring patience and soul searching.

Next time, ask yourself if there isn't a more gentle way of expressing yourself with positive results. You, and only you, can do it!

Tracks back in service after Prescott train collision

by Brandon Mayer The railway tracks on CN Railway’s busy Kingston Subdivision are back in service following a collision between two freight trains on September 2 that injured one crew member. The tracks were out of service until midafternoon on September 4, which caused a standstill on the route which serves high volumes of both freight and passenger trains between the cities of Toronto and Montreal.

The collision tore apart significant lengths of mainline track and derailed four locomotives and 16 freight cars.

Collisions between trains on Canadian railroads are rare.

Track signaling directs locomotive engineers regarding when to stop and when to proceed, with traffic being controlled by a rail traffic control centre. Trains are automatically given a signal to stop if the signal block ahead of them is occupied by other train traffic.

In the case of the Prescott collision, one of the trains involved was reportedly reentering the main line from a spur line. A spur line is a generally short section of track that deviates from the main line, usually to service local industrial buildings which ship products by rail.

Online maps of Prescott show a spur line running into the northwestern edge of town, presumably to service businesses such as Kriska Holdings and Next Polymers. It is unclear which train, either the train passing through on the main line, or the train reentering the main line from the spur line, did not have the right of way to occupy that section of track at the time. A Transportation Safety Board (TSB) investigation is currently underway to find the cause of the collision.

In a news release, Brett Todd, Mayor of Prescott, thanked first responders for their work at the accident scene. He also expressed

gratitude that there weren’t any deaths or more serious injuries, considering the magnitude of the disaster and the proximity of a nearby overpass that serves car and pedestrian traffic.

The unusual accident appeared to have attracted interest from local townspeople in Prescott. The Ottawa Citizen reported that, despite the Town of Prescott asking people not to congregate at the accident site, there were dozens of onlookers standing on the overpass to watch the cleanup activity happening on the tracks below in the days following the accident.

CN Railway issued a statement regarding the collision, confirming that no hazardous materials were involved, other than a minor fuel leak from one of the locomotives. In the statement, CN apologized for the inconvenience caused by the accident.

by Jennifer Westendorp Lest we forget. The Morewood Cenotaph Committee lives by those words. For the past five years, the group has been working tirelessly to improve the grounds by cleaning the iconic statue of Capt. Ernest Glasgow and meaningfully recognize local heroes. What started as a brief discussion about celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Cenotaph grew into a major project, involving contributions from nearly 100 local businesses and individuals.

“I’m very proud of the Committee, for its foresight, follow through, and interest in making things better” noted Bill Smirle, Committee Chair.

He encouraged people to go visit the cenotaph and see the improvements for themselves. A public event was planned but was cancelled due to health concerns regarding COVID and the necessity for restricted attendance. The Committee is planning to bring the community together to commemorate the newly refurbished Cenotaph in July of 2022.

The total cost of the project was around $70,000. Veterans Affairs Canada agreed to contribute $25,000 and local businesses and individuals pitched in approximately $45,000.

The original statue has been completely restored and 21 new pillars have been added to the site. These ‘minimonuments’– lined up in two rows, perhaps emulating soldiers standing at attention - bring to life the local heroes who sacrificed everything in service to their country.

Each pillar features a name, an image, and details of that soldier’s service.

“Once the idea of individual monuments was brought forward, we had many discussions and decided to go ahead with the project to create a more human experience, rather than just reading names off a plaque.” said John Grove, Committee Vice Chair.

The Committee decided to include one more pillar, in the shadow of the original statue, to represent all the soldiers who survived the war,

“The Committee felt it was very important to recognize the soldiers who may not have died on the battle field, but were severely injured in other ways by the war and whose sacrifice should also be remembered” explains John.

The Cenotaph is now fully accessible, and bilingual as well, to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to pay their respects.

“None of this would have been possible without incredible support from our community” says John. “A lot of thought and care went into this project.”

The original cenotaph was

completed and unveiled on July 6, 1921. It has been the site of annual Remembrance Day ceremonies in Morewood for generations, always held on November 11.

“I’ve been to many Remembrance Day Services here and it’s overwhelming to see the number of people who come out to remember the sacrifices made by Canadian soldiers” notes Mayor Tony Fraser. These beautiful pillars are impactful, and something that the whole community can appreciate for years to come.”

by Hayley Bedford On Saturday, September 11, the Terrace Green B&B in Winchester hosted the 1st Annual North Dundas Art Show.

Over 100 visitors passed through the gate into the beautiful grounds of this historic Bed and Breakfast, to be greeted by some extremely talented local artists.

Terrace Green owner and event organiser, Annette Angus, was inspired to host the event after her friend and artist, Carrie A. Keller, mentioned the lack of art shows running. “We’ll host one!”, was Annette’s response. Annette told the Times “I didn’t want to turn any vendors away; the variety and talent of our local artists is amazing”.

She is not wrong! The vendors included Carrie who is a gifted artist, author, and illustrator, Lorraine Delangis who sculpts beautiful garden ornaments from wire, fabric, and liquid polymer, and Louise Boyd who uses alcohol ink to create stunning and vibrant pictures that can be interpreted in many different ways. The Roving Sheep was there to offer us some unique art and gift ideas in the form of her natural fibre creations, and local photographers Rachel Theriault, Jane Rutter, and Jonathan D. Wells were in attendance, with each one offering a different style.

During our conversation on the day, other artists from the area approached Annette to enquire about having a stall at the show next year, which is a testament to how much people were enjoying and missing such events.

Terrace Green has played host for various occasions including weddings and music festivals in its long history. In 1922, the building that previously stood on the site was known as Terrace Green Rooms, Bath and Breakfast, and was owned and operated by Mrs John Moffat.

Annette opened the current B&B in July 2006 after a devastating fire demolished the original building and barn.

The rebuild was designed to replicate the original structure almost exactly.

Township seeing some recreation upgrades

The new courts in South Mountain marked for both tennis and pickleball.

by Brandon Mayer A much-anticipated focus on recreation seems to have come at last to the Township of North Dundas, with new parkland developments and other projects planned, and some improvements to existing spaces already completed.

On September 7, the Township announced that it had upgraded the existing tennis courts in South Mountain to also have the necessary line markings for pickleball, a sport that incorporates elements of both badminton and tennis.

It uses a court of the same size and layout as one for badminton, but gameplay rules that are similar, but not identical, to those of tennis.

Township residents were

invited to attend one of two free training sessions, one on September 18 and the other on September 22, in order to learn the rules of pickleball and get some practice.

As reported in the Times on September 8, the Township regularly seeks to expand recreational amenities in its jurisdiction, and in the past few years, new parkland has been acquired in South Mountain and Hallville, and a partnership with the South Nation Conservation Authority has brought new nature trails to the region.

A large upcoming project is the construction of a new park in Hallville which was announced in May. The new park will have play structures (including accessible swings), paved pathways

for walking and cycling, and even an outdoor rink and a pavilion. Funding will be provided by the federal and provincial governments as well as the Township itself.

The last issue of the Times brought to light the issue of some residents being concerned about too few recreational amenities being accessible from town limits. While it is clear that the Township is continually making improvements to its recreational facilities, North Dundas is still behind other municipalities in some areas. For example, there are no splash pads in North Dundas, nor are there any skate parks. The nearest splash pad for many Township residents is in Morrisburg, and for those parents whose children enjoy skateboarding or scootering, the nearest outdoor skate parks are in Kemptville, Russell and Osgoode.

There is no doubt that residents of North Dundas will be waiting to see what recreational upgrades are coming next, knowing that as our quiet communities grow, so too will we see a growth in the number of places and ways our children can play.

Willy Huybregts of Crysler judged the show and placed fifteen of the nineteen registered 4-H participants that day in a series of showmanship and confirmation classes.

Kelly Fawcett-Mathers, one of seven dairy leaders in Dundas County, said that "the members were grateful for the opportunity to attend an in-person event where family and friends could watch them show their calves; it felt like a slice of normality that we are all looking for". She went on to say that "the show was a great success and it was so nice to see the kids working together and having fun".

by Elva Patterson Rutters The Winchester Lions Club has been busy providing its usual community services. On August 26, the Club donated $1,000 to liver transplant recipient Tina VanBreugel of Winchester.

The cheque was presented by President Tammy Cinnamon Sadler on behalf of the Winchester Lions Club at the Lions pavilion by the arena.

That same night, four student volunteers, one teacher, and two other adults were honoured for jumping on board at the Lions Thrift Store when staffing became a serious challenge during the summer. Drinks were donated by Winchester Foodland, and pizza was a special from Country Kitchen. Thrift store organizers Guy and Suzanne Belliveau were presented with flowers for all the extra work they do behind the scenes at the shop.
