by David Shanahan The votes have been counted and North Grenville has a new council. The new team will begin their fouryear term in December, with the last Council meeting for the current Council coming on November 30.

Nancy Peckford is Mayor of North Grenville until November, 2022, having been elected with a total vote of 2844. The vote count for the other three mayoral candidates was: Elwood Armour (254); Jim Bertram (1632); David Gordon (1200).

Four individuals have been elected to serve as Councillors for the coming term. They are (with their vote totals: Jim McManaman (3160); Craig McCormick (2795); John Barclay (2734); Doreen O'Sullivan (2591).

The other candidates for Councillor were Kristin Strackerjan (2402); Barb Tobin (2333); Deron Johnston (2316); and Frank Onasanya (2279) It is too early, at the time

of going to press late Monday night, to get a full analysis of the turn-out, and a full report will be published in next week’s Times. What can be said with confidence is that this may be the first time since amalgamation in 1998 that the new Council really is new. The entire current Council has been defeated, and we will have five brand new faces around the Council table in December.

The new Mayor, Nancy Peckford, has a great deal of experience in political activism at the federal level, having been the Executive Director of Equal Voice for some time. Interestingly, that

organisation is dedicated to encouraging women to get involved in the political process. Nancy will need to get up to speed quickly on the issues involved in municipal governance, and there is no continuity in the new council she will lead.

Of the new councillors, only John Barclay has been a regular attender at Council over the past years, and his work with the BIA, the Farmers Market and the Oxford Mills Community Association will stand him in good stead in his new position. Craig McCormick is also well acquainted with Council meetings, having

sat through many in his time as OPP Sergeant in the Kemptville detachment.

Both Doreen O‘Sullivan and Jim McManaman will need to be quick learners in their new jobs.

The unsuccessful candidates deserve our thanks for putting their names into the contest and for the hours of canvassing, meetings, and talks with individual residents. Their commitment to our community should be acknowledged and the hope is that they will continue to be involved and add their energy and experience to the life of the new council and their friends and neighbours.

Religion teacher, Michael Hurd, told students that, if they collected over 1,200 cans, he would shave his beard, which

school. John says the cans will supply the food bank for at least a few months, and the variety will allow them to create nice baskets of food for those in need. “I am very pleased with the student involvement,” he says. “It’s a great conversation you can have with students about sharing.”

by David Shanahan It is not too much to say that Don Munz is revered in North Grenville and far and wide as an artist and community supporter. He has left his mark on our community in so many ways, often unknown to residents.

Don designed the renovated facades on Prescott Street, supervised the high school students who created the steamboat murals on Prescott and Clothier Streets, created the sketches of historic buildings in Kemptville in conjunction

Now, as he celebrates his 87th birthday, an exhibition of his work is being held at the Judith Moore Gallery 629 in Merrickville. This coming Saturday, October 27, the vernissage will take place between 2 pm and 5 pm at the gallery at 629 St. Lawrence Street. As the Gallery notes,

He and his wife have lived in North Grenville for many years, and, as listed above, his

who have gone through it, or will go through it,” says Judy Beveridge, of B&H. “There is an ongoing hope that the next dollar will be the cure,” adds Jim Beveridge.

Community Engagement Associate, Ashley Law, from the Ovarian Cancer Canada head office in Toronto, was on hand to receive the donation.

She said that the charity relies on fundraisers run by places like B&H to fund their work, because they don’t receive any money from the govern-

ment, and are not related to the Canadian Cancer Society.

“It means everything,” she says. “[The donation] contributes to women leading fuller, better and longer lives.”

According to Ovarian Cancer Canada, there are thousands of women living with ovarian cancer in Canada. It is estimated that 2,800 women will be newlydiagnosed with the disease this year. Ovarian cancer is the fifth most common form of cancer for women, and is

the most serious form of cancer affecting women.

Ovarian Cancer Canada is the only registered Canadian charity solely dedicated to overcoming ovarian cancer.

They provide leadership by supporting women with the disease, and their families, raising awareness among the general public and healthcare professionals, and funding research to develop early detection techniques, improved treatment and, ultimately, a cure.

We Are Neighbours - John and Pippa, Merrickville

As a military family from the United Kingdom, we’ve had our fair share of moving.

Not just around the UK, but other places such as Hong Kong and Germany, before

we settled in the Merrickville area. My military career drew us to Canada in 2004 for a couple of years, and in 2007, we had the opportunity to move to Canada permanently

mute to work, a high school was available in Kemptville for our youngest son, and our eldest son, who wanted to pursue a career in agriculture, found an ideal program at the Kemptville Agricultural College. Even though our sons have moved to the Barrie area for work (coincidently, living and working only minutes from where we first lived when we moved to Canada in 2004!), Pippa and myself continue to enjoy the quiet, country life of Leeds and Grenville. We live on a few acres of land with a pond for our geese and plenty of space for our dogs, Digger and Tommy, to run.

Naturally, settling into our new Canadian life has been full of peaks and valleys. As our youngest son Guy describes, when he first started high school in Kemptville, he was bullied because of his British accent and being new to Canada. It took him a long time to ‘break-into’ the circles of long-time friends who had been together since Kindergarten. Pippa, who was a highly qualified nurse in the UK, found that it was impossible to work in Canada without retraining. We found we missed (and still do!) family, the public transportation systems in the UK, grocery store food selections, and UK health care.

But, Canada has offered us so many new experiences that we appreciate and value.

We feel extremely safe here.

Pippa and I both commented on how nice it is to speak to a bank teller without a bulletproof glass partition, and walking through small towns and cities at night without thinking twice about our safety is a relief. The friendliness of Canadians has not gone unnoticed either, and we love how people say ‘hello’, and wave to each other from cars and front yards. Guy recalls his first day of school which was an icy cold January day.

Upon returning home at the end of the day, he quickly realized that he had the wrong key to their new house and found himself locked out in the cold. Rather than wait for Pippa or I to get home, he ventured through the snow to the neighbours across the road where they quickly invited him in and served him hot chocolate.

Pippa and I are continually grateful for the wide open spaces that Canada provides, in addition to the lack of traffic in places outside of the larger city centres. We do think that although the amount of land and space is abundant here, compared to the UK which is blessed with endless historical footpaths through public and private lands, Canada has

quite limited points of access to the land.

The rich volunteer culture is another feature that Pippa and I have noticed in the area. The number of people who freely give their time to support children, the sick, newcomer refugees, and others is something we find quite special about Canadians.

Pippa and I feel that newcomer integration is definitely a two-way street. Immigrants have to make an effort to connect with their neighbours, and colleagues (and given the general friendliness of Canadians, we feel this isn’t hard to do!). At the same time, local Canadians need to make an effort to reach-out to newcomers. Asking questions about their homeland, inviting them to events, or asking them over for tea, are just a few things that can help a newcomer feel welcome.

Newcomers and locals alike need to be curious about each other – through learning, people can understand each other more and find common ground upon which to build meaningful relationships.

Pippa, Guy, and I are happy we have focused more on the positive experiences and what we love about Canada, rather than the struggles. It has been worth it. We all agree that, “Canada is the best choice we could have made!”

School Board Trustees

The Trustees for the four school boards in Leeds-Grenville had to wait longer than the council candidates for the results of their contests.

Anouk Tremblay was returned for the French Separate School Board, but the race for the English Separate Board was a tighter race. Brent Laton, the sitting Trustee, lost the vote in North Grenville to Jean LeClair, but easily made up the losses in the Augusta and Edwardsburgh-Cardinal vote. Municipality moves ahead with ball diamond expansion

by Hilary Thomson At the council meeting on October 9, MerrickvilleWolford Council directed staff to move ahead with the ball diamond expansion project requested by the Seaway Surge Baseball Club.

The request came from Seaway Surge at the end of the Summer, asking to expand the diamond by ten feet to allow their Minor Peewee (12) and Major Peewee (13) teams to use it next season.

Councillor Chuck MacInnis put forward the motion at the council meeting to go ahead with the expansion, despite recommendations from staff to push it off until the Spring. This was seen as problematic, because a wet Spring could derail the

project, causing the field to be unusable for the older children in the 2019 season.

“The arrival of the Seaway Surge Club brought financial benefit to the municipality through more visitors purchasing gas, restaurant meals and shopping,” said Chuck’s Notice of Motion. “Allowing the expansion of the ball diamond to accommodate the Peewee level team will only increase the financial benefit.”

Because of the time-sensitive nature of the project, council has decided to suspend the procurement by-law and allow the municipality to sole-source it. They have decided to engage a local business, D. McConnel Construction, which has offered to provide free labour if the mu-

nicipality is willing to cover the cost of the stone dust for the project. This means that a project that had been estimated to cost around $2,000 would cost less than $1,000 for the municipality.

Upon recommendation from staff, council has also directed the CAO to speak with a landscape architect to ensure that the expansion is done to the proper standard in order to protect the municipality. “We need to understand the liabilities that we might be willing to accept down the road,” said Deputy Mayor Anne Barr. “When the work is done, and people are playing on the field, it will be the responsibility of the municipality to make sure it is safe.”

To ensure the work is done this Fall, council has allowed staff to use their discretion when it comes to outlining a proper design and giving the go-ahead for the work to be done. A cap of $3,000 has been placed on the project, which will be funded through the $26,750 fund that is in the recreation reserve, previously earmarked to reimburse residents for user fees in Smiths Falls. Smiths Falls no longer charges user fees for residents of Merrickville-Wolford to use their recreation facilities, therefore these funds are available to be used for other recreational projects that benefit the community, like this one.

Update on infrastructure project in Merrickville

by Hilary Thomson The Village of Merrickville-Wolford received an update on the progress of the Drummond Street West, Lewis Street West and St Patrick Street rehabilitation project at the council meeting of October 9, 2018.

The work is being overseen by Jp2g Consultants Inc., and is almost entirely funded by a $1.9 million grant from the Ontario government that the municipality received earlier this year. The grant is part of the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund, meant to help municipalities finance neces-

sary repairs and upgrades to their infrastructure, which is becoming a serious problem in many cities and towns in the province.

Jp2g is in the process of conducting all the preliminary work needed to create a plan for construction. A topographical survey has been completed, as well as a geotechnical investigation to confirm soil type and rock depth.

Recommended improvements are being developed for the underground services based on condition and/or capacity deficiencies, and for servicing extensions to areas within the project limits that are not

A Journey Along History In the early years of settlement along the Rideau River few trails connected southward to the St. Lawrence River. Today, one of those is Bolton Road, which as the name changes over the length, covers a swath of history.

At Merrickville Legion, starting at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Octobre 30, Michael Whittaker, President of the Rideau Valley Archaeological Society, takes the public and members of the Merrickville and District Historical Society on a journey along Bolton Road.

From County Road 43 to Bishop's Mills, Mr. Whittaker will provide an overview of some farmsteads, schools, mills, and a railway station, with side trips to Deek's Quarry on the Scotch Line Road.

There is much research to do regarding this brief stretch.

Mr. Whittaker will cover what the curious amateur should look for to identify a site, and the regulations governing archaeology in the Province of Ontario. The Rideau Valley Archaeological Society has barely begun to explore the Rideau watershed, and to delve into the science of archaeology.

Rideau Valley Archaeological Society meets the second Sunday of the month at the Goose and Gridiron at 12:30 p.m.

New York State archaeologist Tim Abel will be the guest speaker on November 11.

A public information

session is being tentatively scheduled for late November to provide residents with information on the project and obtain feedback prior to the development of the detailed design construction documents. There are a few property owners who will be affected by the project, as they will be expected to tie into the expanded water/ sewer system. Deputy Mayor Anne Barr asked CAO Doug Robertson to make sure they keep those property owners informed of the progress.

This rehabilitation/expansion project plays a part in the municipality’s goal to expand

OPP Report Merrickville-Wolford On October 10, 2018, the Grenville County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), responded to a break and enter to Bob's Chip Truck, located on St. Lawrence Street, in the village of Merrickville.

The break and enter occurred sometime the previous eve-

ning. A small amount of cash was reported to be missing.

Anyone with future information is encouraged to contact the Kemptville OPP at 613258-3441.

On October 10, 2018, at approximately 8pm, the OPP responded to a break and

Merrickville resident plays bells on Parliament Hill

A Merrickville resident is one of the very few people in the country currently playing the bells, called the carillon, on Parliament Hill. Wendy Stokes-Earl first heard the magical sound of the carillon in 2003 when she was on a vacation with her husband in Florida. They were at the Bok Sanctuary Garden on Martin Luther King Day, and the air

was filled with the bells of their carillon, playing everything from gospel music to blues and jazz. “It was magnificent,” Wendy remembers.

The carillon is the world’s largest instrument. It originated in Belgium over 500 years ago and is defined as a collection of at least 23 finelytuned bronze bells mechanically attached to a keyboard.

It was through Andrea that Wendy learned about a certificate program at Carleton University that trains carillonneurs. The program was started by Dr. McCready, and a music professor at Carleton, James Wright, in 2011 and offers both a two year certificate in the carillon and a three year bachelor of music in the carillon. “It is the only university in the country that offers this program,” Wendy says.

Now in her last semester of the certificate program, Wendy has had the opportunity to play the carillon on Parliament Hill for an hour every week for four semesters. “When I come out on Thursday afternoons, the guards always say that it was lovely,” she says smiling.

A veteran organist, Wendy was hoping that her background would help with mastering the carillon, but found that there were some significant and very challenging differences. “The foot pedals are different, and it takes a lot more effort to get the bells to play,” she says. Not surprising, considering the size of some of the largest bells.

Wendy’s favourite song that she has played at Parliament Hill is the Newfoundland folk song “Let Me Fish Off Cape St. Mary’s,” while she finds playing Canada’s national anthem extremely intimidating. “You can’t make a mistake in O’Canada,” she says.

Wendy says having the opportunity to learn the carillon and play on Parliament Hill has been amazing. “It is a blessing, and I can’t say enough about the experience,” she says. “It’s such a little slice of history.”

The largest bell weighs over 10,000 kilograms. It is also one of the busiest carillons in the world, playing over 200 concerts a year. From September to June, Ottawa’s carillon can be heard from 12:00-12:15 daily, and in July and August the concert lasts for an hour, from 11:0012:00.

It wasn’t until several years after she first heard the carillon that Wendy was reminded of the instrument while watching the Rick Mercer report from her home in Merrickville. Rick Mercer was being taught to play the Peace Tower’s carillon by Canada’s Dominion Carillonneur, Dr. Andrea McCready.

Wendy was thrilled to learn that there was a professional carillonneur so close to home.

She quickly found Andrea’s contact information on the government’s website and sent her an email asking whether she would be interested in having a “rather

Ontario consulting on education and the environment

by David Shanahan The Ontario Government has launched a provincewide consultation process, consulting with parents across the province to address concerns and get feedback in several areas of the education system and their plans for environment policies, including those on climate change. The consulting process on Education uses a number of formats, including open submissions, an online survey and additional telephone town halls.

The government hopes, it says, to use the results of this process to help shape decisions in the following areas: Improving student performance in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Preparing students with needed job skills, such as skilled trades and coding Improving provincial standardized testing

Ensuring students graduate with important life skills, including financial literacy Managing the use of technology in classrooms, such as cell phones Building a new age-appropriate Health and Physical Education curriculum that includes subjects like mental health, sexual health education and the legalization of cannabis Developing the first-ever Parents’ Bill of Rights.

The telephone town halls are being held in the various sections of the province, and there will be three such sessions for Eastern Ontario.

Citizens are asked to contact the website and choose to register for one of the following sessions in this area: October 30: 12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.; November 16: 12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.; or November 22: 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Police Seek Witnesses

On October 9, 2018, the Kemptville Ontario Provincial Police(OPP) began a robbery investigation, which was reported to have occurred on October 3, 2018. The victim of the robbery was a 9 year old female student, from North Grenville.

The student had been out on afternoon recess break, at the Sainte-Marguerite-Bourgeoys Catholic School, located on Campus Drive in Kemptville. The student reported that she was in the school yard, behind a treed area, when she was grabbed by a masked male holding a rock. The male demanded money from the student. The student did not have any money and the child was released without injury.

The male is described as: Approximately 16 years of age; appeared African-American; approximately 165 cm tall; shoulder length braided hair; wearing a dark blue hoodie with a zipper, dark blue jeans, black Nike shoes with black laces; and carrying a black backpack.

The OPP continue to investigate this incident and request that any persons who may have had encounters with, or seen a male matching this description, to please contact Constable Denys Baranovskiy, of the Kemptville OPP at 613-258-3441.

UPDATE UPDATE Tax initiative, the Ford Government is looking for ideas that would somehow avoid both of those approaches, while still dealing with environmental threats facing not only Ontario, but the whole world.

The Government statement notes that: “In particular, the consultation will focus on resiliency efforts, pollution reduction and how government can better partner with the private sector on sustainable solutions”.

The government's new made-in-Ontario environment plan will be released for formal feedback later this year.

The Government’s hope is that it will be “a comprehensive environmental plan to build a resilient Ontario that protects waters and air, cleans up communities and encourages conservation”.

Managers of Rideau Hill Camp, the recipient chosen at the Q2 meeting, gave a presentation to the group on September 20. Funds are being put towards supplementing camp fees so that more children can build some lasting memories with the experience of summer sleepaway camp.

Another past recipient of funds from 100 Women Who Care, Beth Donovan Hospice, will be showing off their new outdoor space, including accessible ramp and gazebo, in an open house next month.

Joining 100 Women Who Care is a very simple way to see directly how your charitable donation is put to work in your own local community.

One of the group’s Leading Ladies, Anne Kotlarchuk, says registered members and newcomers pooled their funds this quarter to raise $5300 for local charity – their largest combined donation so far. This time members voted to give the funds to Neon Night Kemptville, helping that local fundraiser for childhood cancer programs to surpass its annual fundraising goals.

Anne says the local chapter of 100 Women Who Care, which is only in its second year of existence, has already crossed the 100-member mark, and their growth won’t be stopping anytime soon. “We had about 62 women (and a few gentlemen presenting) attend our last meeting. Any of our membership who couldn’t attend sends their donations in ahead of time, online.”

The 100 Women Who Care model asks registered individuals or teams to commit to a $100 donation each quarter, for a full year. Members nominate local charities for consideration, and 7

Well, we’ve done it.

We’ve chosen a group of people to make decisions on our behalf for the next four years. As always, there will be some who think we’ve brought us all a step closer to Paradise, while others will think we’ve been turkeys voting for Thanksgiving.

And, as usual, probably the majority of residents don’t really care and probably didn’t even vote. That’s their problem. When they have to pay their taxes, or complain about the state of the sidewalks, roads, water, or whatever, they’ll have absolutely no right to do so.

But the ones who will form the Municipal Councils in North Grenville and Merrickville-Wolford are not perfect, not above criticism or help. My hope is that they’ll be wise enough, and humble enough, to talk to the people regularly, consult them when appropriate, and keep them informed of the state of the municipality throughout the next four

years, whether the news is good or bad.

But we, the residents, taxpayers or not, also have a job to do. This campaign has been marked by some pretty nasty comments and attitudes throughout. We seem to have caught a spirit of the age that is becoming an increasing concern in our world today. Simply put, it says that anyone who disagrees with me is wrong, and not only wrong, but malicious and deliberately refusing to accept the obvious truth. There’s no room for compromise, or even acceptance that the other sincerely believes in what they say.

The attitude also refuses to accept that others have a right to their opinion at all: that, in fact, their opinion is bias, unthinking and perverse. My opinion, according to this attitude, is simply right, no questioning, no willingness to consider the other’s point of view, because it is completely wrong. This leads to really appalling comments and responses on platforms

like Facebook, comments that, in civilised society and conversation, would be unacceptable and disgraceful.

But social media seems to encourage that kind of thing.

What do we do about this? We can see the effects of this behaviour in the U.S., where the normal modes of decency and honour have been thrown overboard, and the other is always the enemy. And the enemy is always wrong, and anything is justified in fighting them.

Look at Pat Robertson, a man who leads a large Christian movement, commenting on the death of a journalist at the hands of Saudi Arabia. Should the Saudis be punished? Not according to this Republican Christian spokesperson: “You’ve got one journalist — who knows? Was it an interrogation? Was he assassinated? Were there rogue elements? Who did it?...You’ve got $100 billion worth of arms sales...we cannot alienate our biggest player in the Middle East.”

their beliefs and witness are totally discredited in the eyes of so many, and they have exchanged the Gospel for political activism and fatally compromised their credibility.

Better, by far, to return to our traditional public moral standards in Canada. Better to listen to the remarks of Robin Jones, speaking on stepping down as Warden of Leeds & Grenville: “We must remember that what holds us together in Leeds and Grenville is the respect for the collective. It is our right to have and to boldly state our differences, while remembering that we are one community. That the power of language goes both ways – it can be thuggish and part of the problem or positive and part of the solution. Divisive, degrading, offensive and disruptive behaviour is not by chance, but by intent. Hyperbole is the first cousin of untruthful. We need to remember who we are, what our values and principles are and resist those who espouse rhetoric that is a race to the bottom,

Movie Night with Sustainable North Grenville – November 1: Food Evolution

by Jeff Goodman Happy Fall, North Grenville! The team at Sustainable North Grenville has been hard at work planning the Fall and Winter events for our community. We will be leading off with a movie night to screen the Scott Hamilton Kennedy film, “Food Evolution”.

Narrated by Neil DeGrasse Tyson, this documentary film explores “the good, the bad and the ugly of genetic engineering”.

The filmmakers felt that

genetically modified organisms (GMOs) had become a metaphor for almost every issue we have with food and our food system, and decided to explore whether, by better understanding the GMO issues, we could make better decisions about science and technology in general. Top 10 Ways to Survive The Wedding Show Circuit By the Bride and Groom Show Organizer, Anne Kotlarchuk 1. Make a list of the wedding shows available in the next 6 months. This can done by Googling “Wedding Show Eastern Ontario.” Write down how much each show is to attend, if you need to register and where the show is held. Then decide which ones you can afford. If the show is free, GO! The benefits will far outweigh the time taken to attend.

2. In the weeks prior to each event, enter every single draw and contest that each wedding show offers. You will be amazed at what you can win. Not many people enter, especially the smaller shows, so your chances of winning are very high!

3. Follow the show Facebook page, and “click on” that you’re interested or that you will be attending their Facebook event. This will automatically send you notifications and keep you up to date on what vendors will be in attendance, contests etc.

4. Make a list of wedding resources that you still need to research and bring it with you.

5. Take your significant other, if they are as interested and involved as you. Otherwise your Mother or best friend are your ultimate resources!

6. If you plan to try on a dress, wear clothing that is easy to change out of and for the sake of the bridal store, don’t wear any makeup. They will thank you. Questions to ask your photographer Before even looking at a photographer, make sure you educate yourself on the differences between a good photographer, and a good wedding photographer. Meet with each photographer and videographer personally and make sure that your personalities are a match because you will be spending your entire day with him/her. Review their work in person (remember that they only post limited images on websites) and discuss their pricing.

Gear is overrated. But at minimum you need reliable gear! Ask how many cameras they bring to a wedding, and if they have keep double back ups of all their photos. It doesn’t matter how much you paid for your photographer, if their only camera decides to malfunction… wedding photography is over for the day. If a hard drive fails while they are editing without a backup… your photos are gone. Chances are if you are paying less than $1000 for your photography, this is an extra expense they cannot afford.

Kemptville Storm Hockey Hosts 4th Annual Storm Day

by Kathy Dickenson On Saturday, October 6, 2018, the Kemptville Storm celebrated its fourth annual Storm Day in celebration of World Girls Hockey Weekend, an initiative of the International Ice Hockey Federation and Hockey Canada. More than 330 events with over 23,000 participants took place across the world this year.

Again this year, the Storm hosted 12 visiting teams from Novice to Midget for a series of exhibition games on both ice pads. With facepainting, raffle tables, 50/50 tickets, chuck-a-puck, game announcers and music, the rink was certainly the place to be on Storm Day! Long-time Storm volunteers Kelly Workman and Mike Ross made sure the rink was decked out for the event, from streamer walls and balloons to oversized full colour posters. There are so many wonderful volunteers who put in countless hours to make the celebration of female hockey in Kemptville an annual, not-to-be missed event. Much gratitude to Lorne Langevin, Angela Gill, Payton Langevin, Julia Desormeaux, Vanessa and Makaila Grue, Dan Mellon, Nancy Beggs and David Johnson, who spent many hours at the rink taking care of the many behind the scenes duties that help an event like this run smoothly. Thank you to all the visiting teams for helping us showcase female hockey in North Grenville.

According to Pierre St-Pierre of the Nepean Wildcats “The Kemptville "Storm Day" embodies the spirit of the World Girls Hockey Weekend. Over the last four years, since it's inception, I have had the pleasure in attending Storm Day with multiple Nepean Wildcat teams in numerous divisions. All our girls and their families enjoy this event as it provides us an opportunity to bond as a team early in the hockey season at an exhibition game composed in a tournament like atmosphere.

This fun event is a true celebration of the female game of hockey. My daughters and I hope to witness this event grow and evolve for many years to come.

Fire Prevention Officer, Shannon Armitage gives the manager and residents of Pinehill Apartments the thumbs-up after their fire drill.

As part of North Grenvilles’ fire prevention month 2018, ATOR Properties Inc. and Peartree Group Property Management, in cooperation with the North Grenville Fire Prevention Services, performed its annual fire drill at ATOR’s Pinehill Apartments on Pine Hill Road.

Despite the cooler weather, the drill was a success, with all participating residents evacuated in under three minutes. Shannon Armitage, North Grenville’s Fire Prevention Officer, was on site during the drill and emphasized the special need for annual fire drills in all of Kemptville’s multi-residential buildings, as part of a complete fire prevention and awareness program. Annual fire drills remind residents to make a plan and practice the plan. If there is a fire, get outside and stay outside and call 9-1-1.

ATOR Properties and Peartree Group Property Management work closely with the North Grenville Fire Prevention Services to maximize the safety of their residents. Conducting fire drills and routine inspections of all emergency equipment, such as fire extinguishers and emergency lighting, is key to revealing deficiencies and problems before tragedy strikes.

In ATOR Properties’ commitment to go the extra mile, each participating resident was also presented with a $10 gift card, as a show of appreciation for participating in this life-saving fire drill. Both ATOR Properties and Peartree Property Management would like to thank all the tenants of 311 Pinehill for such a successful fire drill.

by Hilary Thomson One Hundred Kids Who Care North Grenville held their first meeting on Thursday, October 18, raising $200 for Children’s Mental Health of Leeds and Grenville (CMHLG).

Twenty-six kids showed up for the meeting in the cafeteria at the North Grenville District High School on Thursday evening. Each child donated $10 of their own money to participate,

and they were given a stone to be used to vote for a charity to support after hearing three presentations from various 100 Kids Who Care members. The three options were CMHLG, Beth Donovan Hospice, and Girls Inc. The meeting was completely bilingual, with each presentation being given in both English and French. Cookies for the evening were generously supplied by B&H Grocer.

At the end of the meeting,

two of the organizers, Mabel Roberts and Kira Schiissler, announced (with a drum roll from the audience) that CMHLG had been chosen as their charity of the evening with thirteen votes. The total amount raised was $260 with $200 going towards CMHLG and $30 each going to Beth Donovan Hospice and Girls Inc. The founding members of 100 Kids Who Care North Grenville are Oscar Roberts,

Ontario Press Service Work-related noise-induced hearing loss (or NIHL) is much more common than people think. In fact, thousands of Ontarians report having work-related hearing loss each year and over 30,000 people needed support from the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) for work-related NIHL between 2007 and 2017.

One of these people is Doug, whose career as a mechanic cost him his hearing. His story is featured in the WSIB’s new NIHL awareness campaign to alert people to the risks of workplace noise.

“We see people every day who are suffering from hearing loss as the result of decades spent working in places that are just too loud,” said Tom Teahen, WSIB President and CEO. “The problem is, it’s easy to get used to loud, harmful noises in the workplace, since they’re rarely painful or irritating. But long-term exposure to these noises can cause irreversible hearing loss.”

The WSIB campaign uses online videos, radio ads and social media posts to illustrate that if the noises in workplaces were unpleasant – rather than just loud – people would be more aware of how much damage work-related noise can actually cause. The campaign website, www.toneitdown.ca, hosts interactive tools, such as an “age of your ears” test and examples of different types of workplace noises and their corresponding decibel reading.

In addition, it provides general information about NIHL and a simple four-step outline to help reduce damaging noise in the workplace, including: recognizing the risk, assessing the cause, controlling the noise and evaluating the solution.

Wondering how loud is too loud? Prolonged exposure to noise over 85 decibels (dBA) can cause damage to your hearing over time. For context, the noise levels in a busy restaurant range from about 70-90dBA, and noise from power tools (i.e. an electric drill) can range from approximately 90-120dBA. The top two sectors for allowed NIHL claims over the last 10 years were manufacturing (25%) and construction (16%). Men accounted for most (93%) of all industry claims.

“The good news is that NIHL is the only type of hearing loss that's completely preventable,” said Elizabeth Witmer, WSIB Chair. “We want to get workplace-related noise induced hearing loss on people’s radar early, because if they understand the dangers of noise, they can protect their hearing for life.”

Harvey C. Banks up Asa Street and past my home. I certainly was one interested boy at that first open air meeting on Clothier Street just between Bedingfield’s harness shop and Hagan’s tin shop [in front of the South Branch Bistro].

An empty shop in the building opposite my home on Asa Street had been that day speedily turned into an Army hall and that night I managed to press my way with the crowd into that meeting and became a regular attendant every night after that. My mother was the first woman to go to the Army penitent form and that was on January 31st, and two weeks from that day I went to my bedroom at the noon hour and asked God would he please give me the same thing that other boys and young men as Albert McFadden, Tom Evoy, Jack O’Neil had received.

I left my room not feeling any different but ready in trust to do anything that I too might be saved. The moment I placed my left hand on that stair bannister (and by the way Edward Jones who may be remembered by some of the older citizens made that bend on that stair bannister) I was saved and knew it. Now for nearly 45 years my greatest delight has been to tell the

by David Shanahan To help mark the Salvation Army’s 130th anniversary in North Grenville, this installment of Sons and Daughters features a local man whose life was turned around the first day the Salvation Army came to Kemptville. Harvey C. Banks was a member of a well-known family in Kemptville. His mother, Ellen Johnston, had immigrated to Canada from

County Donegal, Ireland, in 1841, along with her parents, Lancelot and Margaret, who settled in Kemptville. Ellen married Chester Banks, who ran a stable and livery business on the corner of Asa and Thomas Streets (where the apartment building is today).

Harvey’s quiet smalltown world was changed forever when the first Salvation Army people arrived from Ottawa to start a new work.

He later became a Major in

the Army himself, living past his 100th birthday and retaining a detailed memory of that first exciting day in January, 1888. This recollection was written in 1933, 45 years after those exciting days.

How well do I remember the coming of the Salvation Army to “open fire” on the hosts of sin in old Kemptville.

I stood in front of Blackburn’s general store that winter’s day the 14th of January, 1888, and saw “the Army advancing”

old, old story.

One of those early Army Captains who came to Kemptville was Sarah Eliza Pitcher, who married Harvey in 1902.

Harvey was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Salvation Army in 1892, and served in various posts in Ontario, finally settling in Owen Sound, where he went into the knitting business. His six children grew up there, and his son, Lancelot, became a Captain in the Salvation Army also, until his death in 1953. Some of his other children also spent their careers in various posts with the Army. But Harvey had rejoined the ranks in 1927, when he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, followed by stays in Florida, North Carolina and Louisiana. He retired in Oklahoma City in 1938.

Harvey might have taken up business in Kemptville, like his father and brother, Lancelot, if those marching men and women had not appeared on Asa Street in 1888.

The family was an important

part of the town’s social and business life. After Chester retired from the livery stable, his son, Lancelot, took over and was also the manager of the town’s ice rink. A wellliked figure around town, Lancelot had lived in Omaha for a few years, returning to Kemptville to take over the business from his aging father. A thriving operation, as well as a livery stable, they ran a shuttle service between the railway station and the town’s hotels, as well as supplying horses and rigs for hire. Banks himself was a carpenter by trade, and built the buses, as they were called, that carried the passengers around town. Sadly, in 1901, Lancelot was killed in an altercation with some youths late at night.

Harvey, however, lived to a ripe old age, passing the 101 years mark, going to his home at last after a long life of service and fulfilment. And it all began on that January evening in 1888.

Mary Jean McFall declared Liberal candidate

by David Shanahan Although no by election has yet been called to fill the vacancy caused by the sudden death of Gord Brown as M.P. for the riding of Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes, the political parties are busy nominating candidates to run once the contest is called, which should be by the end of this month. Michael Barrett was chosen by the Conservative party some time ago, and Michelle Taylor will represent the NDP, as she did in the provincial campaign in June of this year.

Now the Liberal Party have chosen their candidate,

and it is another familiar face in the area. Mary Jean McFall represented the Party in the last federal election in 2015, when she ran second to Gord Brown. However, her performance in the election was a clear improvement on Liberal support in previous contests in the riding. This was partly due to an increase in the number of voters marking their ballots.

In this riding, just over 8,000 more votes were cast in 2015 than in 2011 (56,434 compared to 48,394). Of the total ballot, Gord Brown received 26,734, or 2,328 less than in 2011. The big gainer was the Liberal Party, which went from just 7,839 votes in

2011, to 22,888 in 2015, a significant gain of 15,049 votes.

Clearly, the Liberals believe that Mary Jean McFall can build on her results in the upcoming federal election.

Following her defeat in 2015, Ms. McFall was appointed Chief of Staff to Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay, but her family’s ownership of Burnbrae Farms, one of the region’s largest producers of eggs, led to suggestions of conflict of interest. In 2016, Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner Mary Dawson imposed a conflict of interest screen on McFall that instructed her to remove herself from specific meetings. However, Ms. McFall resisted calls for her resignation, and only left MacAuley’s service in July of this year in order to run in the election.

Since then, she says, she has been travelling the back roads of the riding, meeting people and identifying areas of concern. She has specifically cited the future development of County Road 43 in Kemptville as one of the concerns she wants to address in the area of regional infrastructure, and has spoken of the levels of hidden poverty which exist throughout the rural areas.

Project Warmth and Heat for the Holidays set to warm homes this winter Community Food Share (CFS) and House of Lazarus (HOL) are once again teaming up with Winchester BMR to make homes a little warmer this Winter.

In 2017, the trio joined forces to deliver 180 singlewindow insulation kits and 58 multi-window insulation kits to Dundas County’s vulnerable sector through Project Warmth, and 10 oneton loads of Eco-Energy Logs through Heat for the Holidays. This year, the group is hoping to do more.

“The response to these programs last Winter was overwhelming,” HOL executive director Cathy Ashby said. “The need is clearly there and, with that in mind, we have ordered accordingly.”

“I was one of the six people delivering wood during last year’s Heat for the Holidays program,” Linking Hands co-ordinator, Sandy Casselman, said. “With every house we delivered to, I could see the clear need for assistance. Many residents were using blankets to close off parts of their home in an effort to conserve heat. In fact, we’ve heard from more than one family who has spent the winter without heat, forced to wear their outdoor coats, hats, and mitts indoors. This should not be happening. No one should have to live this way.”

Without donations, the majority of the bill lands at the feet of HOL and CFS. “We’re hoping when people, businesses, and community groups make their

seasonal donation decisions this year, that they will consider donating to one or both of these programs,” Sandy said. “Any and all donations will be gratefully accepted.”

A $20 donation will provide window insulation kits for three families, while a $63 donation will supply a week’s worth of Eco-Energy Logs, and a $252 donation will supply a month’s worth of Eco-Energy Logs to a family in need this winter. The Ottawa Carleton Plowmen’s Association (OCPA) presented cheques for $8,750 to the Kemptville District Hospital Foundation (KDHF) and the Winchester District Memorial Hospital Foundation (WDMHF).

The funds were raised at OCPA’s 15th Annual Plowing Fore A Cure golf tournament held on August 14, at Emerald Links Golf and Country Club in Greely.

Kemptville Hospital plans to use the funds to purchase much needed Sapphire Multi Therapy Infusion Pain Pumps for their ICU, while Winchester Hospital plans to purchase chemotherapy chairs for use in cancer patient care.

This year’s tournament was held in memory of Lloyd Cowan, 1922 – 2017. Lloyd was born into a farm family in Metcalfe Corners where he spent his youth working on his family and neighbour’s farms. Lloyd later worked driving a truck for the City of Ottawa, delivered milk, waited tables and drove a taxi. He subsequently started his own Surge milking machine dealership in North Gower and later moved to Manotick where he built his home and shop. Lloyd was heavily involved with the Ottawa Carleton Plowmen’s Association and the International Plowing Match held in Richmond in 1983. Highly regarded in the farming community, Lloyd will always be remembered as a senior statesman of agriculture in Ottawa-Carleton.

The Makers of Lafferty’s Tunes

by Helen MacGregor You can’t have an Irish wake without lots of great Irish music! At the helm of this rollicking good musical time at the wake is our fearless Musical Director, Louise Atchison. Here is an intro to the singers and band.

The Lafferty’s Wake Singers are in Rory’s Pub to help the family of Lafferty sing all those great songs. Jane Baird, an alto from Merrickville, finds all the music fun and catchy. She is sure the whole audience will want to sing along. Nancy Henry, an alto from Kemptville, loves being a part of the production and is having a grand time. Our third alto is Carol Nicholl. Her smile lights up the stage, and the three altos make wonderful harmonies throughout all the songs.

Found these beautiful colors and took a few shots planning to come back when are very excited to be able the sky was bright and blue.
