Kemptville District Hospital [KDH] is receiving almost $1 million in increased funding from the Government of Ontario. The funds amount to $934,500, a 4% increase on previous years. This funding is part of a $1.1 billion investment into the hospital sector as part of Budget 2026, A Plan to Protect Ontario, which represents an overall 4% increase in annual support for the fourth year in a row.

"From the day our government took office, hospital funding has been a priority, particularly those like Kemptville District that serve patients in small towns and rural communities," said Steve Clark, MPP

for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes. "I'm a proud advocate for our local hospitals and I welcome this continued investment in services for patients and the frontline healthcare workers that deliver them."

These investments will support the operations of core clinical services in Kemptville so they can better meet patient needs. This includes funding to help keep their emergency departments open, support inflationary or other wage pressures, and reduce wait times for diagnostic imaging and surgical procedures so that people can connect to care faster.

"KDH is grateful to our provincial partners, and MPP Steve Clark, for supporting our regional hospital with this vital funding," said Frank Vassallo, Kemptville District Hospital President and CEO. "These funds enable us to deliver safe, high-quality care to our patients, and continue to meet the growing demand for care across all age groups."

"Our government is making historic investments to protect Ontario's healthcare system, ensuring that more people in Leeds and Grenville can connect to the care they need, where and when they need it," said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health.

"This investment will allow Kemptville District Hospital to continue delivering the highest standard of care while reducing wait lists and wait times for patients and families, for generations to come."

Over the next 10 years, the province is investing approximately $64 billion in major health infrastructure. This includes plans to begin work on more than fifty major hospital projects across the province, which will deliver approximately 3,000 new hospital beds.

by Rob Wheelhouse I noticed today that my name was in the June 18 edition of the North Grenville Times as the newly appointed President of the North Grenville Men's Shed (NGMS). I probably should have noticed earlier, but we older guys can be a little slow on the uptake. I want to extend my congratulations to Chris Rowland as VP, Stuart Leyanaar as Treasurer, and Dennis Delaney in the newly created role of Communications Lead, and extend my thanks to Peter Ivay and the prior executive team for growing the NGMS from 4 to 40+ in 2 years.

The NGMS ‘shedders' suggested that this might be a good time to remind the community of what we're about. We are a community service club whose primary focus is..."us", and specifically our mental health.

The depression and suicide statistics for older guys is tragic. There's a reason why Japanese wives of retired men refer to them as "Sodaigomi", meaning "oversized garbage".

Wives (and all women) do a better job of maintaining social connections throughout a lifetime, while a lot of guys lose their connections when they retire or move to a new location.

Men's Sheds help with that. How? If a guy wanders into the basement of the Salvation Army building at 2 Oxford St W, Kemptville on Tuesday or Thursday between 8:30 and 10:30, he'll be welcomed and given a cup of coffee (and a cookie if he's lucky), no questions asked and no obligations to join.

Just welcomed.

Then the magic happens. What magic?

Look at the 12-minute ‘Impact Video' on the home page of the Men's Shed Canada site (https://mensshedscanada.ca). Heartwarming stuff. NGMS does not yet have a permanent shed, which explains the NGMS donation boxes or the posters for a Golf tournament supporting NGMS. We're saving to rent or purchase our own Shed.

The good news is that one of our members is letting us use his entire oversized two-car garage until we find a rental or purchase option. The photo shows our new shop with equipment, sans hommes and therefore more photogenic! By the middle of July, our shedders will be working at the equipment and making projects happen.

Local MP Michael Barrett appointed Shadow Minister for Veterans Affairs

Michael Barrett, Member of Parliament for Leeds– Grenville–Thousand Islands–Rideau Lakes, was appointed Shadow Minister for Veterans Affairs by the Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition.

“Serving in the Canadian Armed Forces was one of the greatest privileges of my life. It is an honour to continue serving Canada’s veterans in

a new capacity and to advocate for the Canadians who answered the call to serve. Our veterans and their families have made extraordinary sacrifices, and they deserve the highest standard of care, respect, and support,” said MP Barrett.

As Shadow Minister for Veterans Affairs, Barrett will hold the government accountable for

ensuring veterans receive timely access to benefits and health care, better support for the transition to civilian life, improved mental health and housing services, and meaningful recognition of their service and sacrifice.

“Canada asks extraordinary things of the men and women who serve in uniform. When their service ends, our obligation to them does not. I look forward to working alongside veterans’ organizations, military families, and communities across Canada to improve the support veterans receive while holding the government accountable for delivering the care they have earned,” added Barrett.

Before entering Parliament, Barrett served in the Canadian Armed Forces as a Telecommunications Lineman, supporting domestic operations, including deployments in Canada’s High Arctic and disaster assistance. As a Member of Parliament, Barrett introduced the Service Dogs for Veterans Act, which would recognize service dogs as a federally supported benefit for veterans, establish a national training standard, and help ensure veterans who need a service dog can access one. He will continue advocating for practical measures that improve the lives of CAF and RCMP veterans and their families.

As time goes by

by David Shanahan What a busy time for national holidays.

No sooner do we enjoy Canada Day, than we’re reading and seeing news about the Excited States own national party. However, it does look like the big 250th Birthday Party was a bit of a damp squib this year, mostly because it was hijacked. Not a very successful hijack, in truth: an “Americanblue” stretch of water that turned green, and a National County Fair where the few people who turned up were hit by record temperatures, expensive water and snacks, and a collapsing stage. Don’t think for a minute that I am taking any pleasure in this rather amateurish celebration.

What I was thinking during the course of the slowly-evolving mess was how grateful I am that I chose this country rather than that one when

I decided to emigrate. Of course, I can really not be too critical: Ireland celebrates its National Holiday in March! I remember St. Paddy’s Days in my misspent youth standing in the pouring rain to watch a rather bedraggled parade of bands and floats passing in a miserable convoy down O’Connell Street on a dull and wind-swept morning. July is a much better season to do that kind of thing.

But I have also been thinking of how close we all came to being part of that American show, and I don’t just mean the recent “51st State” nonsense.

There was a time, way back, when things happened so fast that Canada might have turned out to be a very different place.

In just a century, so much change, unexpected, revolutionary change, might have turned out quite differently.

Start in 1763: Britain is finally in charge of almost

the entire North American continent, having chased the French monarchy out of their possessions. Quebec joins the Thirteen Colonies as part of the British Empire in North America.

But, before you know it, Thirteen Colonies thirteen years later decided to leave the Empire and want Quebec to come along.

But Quebec doesn’t, for many reasons, much to American displeasure.

Twenty years after taking over, in 1783, Britain loses most of its possessions and is left with just the colony they took from the French.

Within a few years, the French have their own Revolution, partly because the country is bankrupt after financing the American Revolution.

Everything is connected.

Hardly have things calmed down again, when the Americans decide to take Canada by force, and the War of 1812 breaks out.

The Americans, you see, were quite convinced that

Canadians really, really wanted to be Americans, and were just being kept back by those awful British elites and monarchists.

They believed their invading forces would be welcomed with open arms by grateful Canadians.

Some things come around again in history, don’t they? No sooner had that war ended, in 1815, than the Brits decide to build a canal to protect against future American attempts to invade, and we get the World Heritage Site that is the Rideau Canal, about to mark its own 200th birthday.

Denied Canada, the Americans decide next to invade each other and civil war breaks out in 1860, during which the North threatens to ....invade Canada once they settle the South’s presumption.

This then encourages the British North American Provinces to hang together so they wouldn’t hang separately, and we get

Confederation in 1867.

There is still a lot to do to prevent the Americans moving into the West, pushing the new nation’s borders from sea to sea (it took a bit longer to get to the third sea: From sea to sea to sea, you see).

So, there you have it.

In the course of a quick hundred years, the entire history of the North American continent changed, new nations were born, fought each other, threatened to fight each other, and Canada’s future was shaped in a completely new direction. From being a 14th Colony of Britain in 1763, to creating a New Nation a hundred years later, Canada had survived wars and revolutions. But at any point in those years, things could have worked out differently. What if Britain had not evicted the French in 1763, and the American Revolution had evicted the British twenty years later? No British presence in North

i.e. work really hard, so that their children could have an easier life? Shouldn’t things have continued to have gotten easier rather than harder for this current generation?

Should we blame our children because they are in a world where their job can be replaced by a machine, AI, or automation? Past generations were not up against non-human competition for jobs. Or a reality where you cannot buy a loaf of bread

for less than two dollars. I remember when that same loaf was 30 cents!

Gone are the days when our parents, or even we, could be assured that our job promised lifetime security! That doesn’t exist anymore. It’s easy enough to pass judgement based on our past experience, which is not today’s current reality.

America. A French territory north of the U.S., or would the people in Quebec have joined the revolution?

But what would have happened when the French had their own Revolution just a few years after the Americans? What direction would Quebec have taken then? It’s called Counterfactual History, or “What if...?”, and it is a fascinating exercise to imagine what might have been if a few things had happened just a few years earlier, or later, than they did. And, just to keep up the exercise: history continues to play that same game of “what if...?”. For example, what if Trump either refuses to leave office, or tries to cancel elections? What if Carney had not become PM when he did? What if Putin had defeated Ukraine in those first few weeks of the war?

It goes on and on and on....

It’s a changed world Nick

by Dawn Silver A reply to “Young Adults Are Exchanging the Grit of Independence for the Illusion of Wealth” by Nick Kossovan. I’m not sure if it was published as rage bait or to provoke healthy debate.

But, in the spirit of healthy debate, I would like to reply: Mr. K has strong feelings about today’s 20 something’s and perhaps 30 something’s that are living in their parents basement, and he believes it to be some sort of failure to launch rather than the reality of an economy where the monthly minimum wage doesn’t keep up with the most basic standard rent, groceries, gas and car insurance, Internet, and getting your laundry done at a laundromat. Never mind the thrift furniture and curbside finds; that’s a given.

It’s easy for someone who was born in the postwar boom of the late 1900s, whether that be 1950s, 60s, 70s, and even 80s, to reminisce about what it was like when THEY started out, when the reality in those days was that you could get a minimum wage job at 18 and still be able to afford your July 9, 2026

own apartment SOLO(!), food, etc., and probably still have a bit of money left over for cigarettes (and a little weed back in those days).

That’s not how the current economy works. Unfortunately, there are too many young people who do everything “right“: They’re on the honour roll at high school, they go to university and get a degree, sometimes even two or more, and yet they can’t seem to find a job in their field that pays enough for them to live on their own.

In fact, you can have your degrees and still end up in a minimum wage job, and so they’re forced to live in their parents basement. I can’t imagine many of them feel very proud of themselves to know that, despite playing by the rules and doing everything they were supposed to do, they find themselves in their 20s and 30s and either haven’t left the basement, or for some valid reason (a break up, roommates moving out, loss of a job due to AI or a corporation/conglomerate's downsizing/takeover/merging/or -gasp-shutting down)

So Mr. K: you opine that parents who let their young adult children linger “aren’t parenting.” That “true adult character ..requires the friction of the wind, heavy downpours, and the chill of frost to develop cultural integrity”. That does wax very poetic and I’m going to hope that is only as you intended it, because, if I had the choice of sending my 20/30 something out into those nasty elements without a means of supporting themselves, or letting them live in my basement while they take the time it needs for them to get out on their own, I know which direction I’m letting that wind bend me.

I believe that the pretenders that Mr. K calls out who apparently choose to stay at home and “project pseudo success on their parents dime” are the exception rather than the rule.

Here’s another thought: just because we or our ancestors had a really hard life, is that the type of life we want for our children and grandchildren and the next generations? Didn’t each generation ‘suffer’,

Ingredients: • 1 cucumber, peeled, seeded and diced • 1 large tomato, skinned and diced • 2 green onions, finely chopped • ½ cup refried beans (available in cans) • ¼ cup of chicken stock • 1 tablespoon of chopped seeded Jalapeno pepper • 2 ripe avocadoes, peeled, with the flesh pureed (just use a fork) • 3 tablespoons of lemon juice • A squirt or two of Olive oil • A sprinkle of black pepper Preparation: • Place the cucumber, tomato and green onions in a bowl and stir them together • Heat the refried beans with the chicken stock in a small pan till warm • Mix them into your vegetables • Add the Jalapeno pepper, avocado and lemon juice and mix well • Place in your favourite dip dish • Sprinkle with olive oil and black pepper and chill for up to a half hour Serve this dip with the largest Nacho chips you can find or make your own by baking cut up raw tortilla shells till they are golden (this cuts down on the salt so it’s a lot healthier).

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding the public about the rules for dirt bike use. Dirt bikes with blue-lettered licence plates are considered roadapproved motorcycles and must meet all Highway Traffic Act requirements, including valid registration, insurance, an appropriate driver's licence, and compliance with the rules of the road.

Dirt bikes with green-lettered licence plates are classified as off-road motorcycles, a type of off-road vehicle (ORV) under Ontario Regulation 316/03. Riders should check with their local municipality before operating on public roads, as municipal bylaws vary and may permit or restrict their use.

To operate a green-plated off-road motorcycle where permitted, riders must: Be at least 16 years of age Hold a valid M2, M, G2, or G driver's licence Carry valid insurance Wear an approved motorcycle helmet Ensure the vehicle is properly registered and plated Unplated dirt bikes may only be operated on private property with the property owner's permission.

The OPP also reminds riders that a valid trail permit is required when using the Algonquin Trail and other trail systems where permits are required.

Before riding, operators should familiarize themselves with all applicable provincial legislation and municipal bylaws. Riders are encouraged to respect their communities, stay on authorized routes and trails, and operate safely at all times.

The OPP will continue to conduct enforcement initiatives to promote public safety. Failure to comply with applicable laws may result in fines, vehicle impoundment, or other enforcement action. www.ngtimes.ca

The second newspaper

by David Shanahan The first newspaper in Kemptville, the Progressionist, arrived with the first railway in 1854, published

by R.W. Kelly from his offices on Clothier street; but it had folded within just a few years when Kelly moved to Brockville. But Kemptville was not without a newspaper for long. Kelly’s son, J.H. Kelly, started the Kemptville Observer and North Riding of Leeds and Grenville Advertiser in the summer of 1861.

One again, only one copy of this paper seems to have survived, that of January 23, 1862. It followed very much the same format as the Progressionist, but its new items had added spice, covering as they did the ongoing American Civil War.

The local news items, and the many advertisements for local businesses and events, give the historian a wonderful glimpse of life in North Grenville so long ago. However, the Observer only lasted a few years, and Kemptville was, once again, left without a newspaper.

But, while it lasted, it seems to have had a wide distribution, having agents in villages across the region, some of whom were significant individuals in their own right: J. K. Read, Burritt’s Rapids; A, McGee, Oxford Mills; T. Lonsdale, South Gower; Hugh Adams, Heckston; Owen Murphy, South Kemptville; and others in Mirickville (as it was called then), Prescott, Mountain, Brockville, Perth, Inkerman, Spencerville,

Smiths Falls.

There was coverage of the recent municipal elections that year, with Reeves elected for 1862: Rickey Waugh, with John Johnston as Deputy for the Township of Oxford, and Joseph Adams for the Township of South Gower. An entry in the Minutes of Kemptville’s Council mentioned the survey that was then taking place of the Village of Kemptville.

“Met at the house of William McGregor on Monday, 20th January, 1862 at 10 o’clock A.M. The Clerk [Wm. R. Anderson] presented the petition of John Burchill, Esq., requesting an extension of the time to complete the survey of the Village of Kemptville, and to pay

him a part of his wages for same.” Burchill’s contract was extended to March 1, and he was paid $80 “so soon as there is funds on hand for such purpose”. Hi survey map of the Village is dated March 31, 1862, and is a very useful record of Kemptville in that time.

The business life of the village seems to have been dominated by a few trades and even fewer individuals.

Blacksmiths, hardware and grocery stores, saddle and harness makers were all based around Main Street (now Clothier Street) and Prescott Street. Kemptville Bakery and Confectionary was run by H.C. Perkins and advertised “Breads, Cakes, Crackers, Pies, etc always on hand. Confectionary of evry description, Ginger

Beer, Lemon Syrup, Syrup of all kinds manufactured wholesale and Retail. Parties and Pic-Nics supplied on reasonable terms”.

There were varying approaches to dealing with those in debt to these stores.

Kelly himself had a notice inserted in his paper stating: “We would notify those persons indebted to us who desire to pay their accounts in wood that we are in want of that necessary article”, an interesting insight into commercial relations at the time.

Others were not as flexible.

The leading entrepreneur in the village, C. H. Baldwin, had his own message to debtors: “All persons indebted to the subscriber, either by Note or Book account that are past due, are hereby notified that if the same is not paid forthwith, he will put them in Court for Collection, without respect to persons.

Take warning and thereby save Costs.”

One business that had advertised in the Progressionist was closing down: “Brewery for Sale For Sale in the village of Kemptville, a Brewery in working order, 60 x 30 ft two and a half stories high,

to which is attached nearly half an acre of land... Also for sale a stone Dwelling House, 30 by 40 ft, two stories high, on the Main street of Kemptville, with about an acre of land attached.

Thomas Beckett, Kemptville, January 13, 1862.” The house still stands on Clothier Street West, across from the Anglican Church, but the brewery, which stood behind the house on the banks of the South Branch, is long gone.

One other interesting fact shows that Kemptville was not entirely isolated from the wider cultural milieu. An advertisemnt in the paper was for The Atlantic Monthly magazine, containing “Contributions in prose and poetry” by such luminaries as Henry W, Longfellow, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Oliver W. Holmes, Ralph W. Emerson, Fanny Kemble, and others. The Atlantic is still in business, publishing since 1857.

Much more can be gleaned from this one issue of the Observer, but that can wait for another day.

Municipality of North Grenville Notice of Passing of an Interim Control By-law Extension Take notice that the Corporation of the Municipality of North Grenville passed By-law 78-26 on June 23rd, 2026 to extend the period of time during which Interim Control By-law 49-25 is in effect in accordance with the provisions of Section 38(2) of the Planning Act, 1990, as amended.

And take notice that Interim Control By-law 49-25 was originally in effect from July 1st, 2025 to June 30th, 2026. By-law 78-26 extends Interim Control By-law 49-25 for a period of one year until June 30th, 2027. Council has the authority to extend the period during which By-law 49-25 will be in effect to a total period not exceed two years from the date of passage of By-law 49-25.

The purpose and effect of Interim Control By-law 49-25 is to regulate buildings, structures and land uses in the urban service area for a period of twelve months to allow for the appropriate completion of a study on the Municipality’s servicing policies .

And take notice that only a specified person may appeal to the Ontario Land Tribunal in respect to all or part of this Interim Control By-law may be made by filing a notice of appeal with the Clerk of the Municipality of North Grenville either via the Ontario Land Tribunal e-file service (first-time users will need to register for a My Ontario Account) at https://olt.gov.on.ca/e-file-service/ by selecting Municipality of North Grenville as the Approval Authority or by mail to P.O. Downtown Kemptville comes alive with summer music, community spirit, and local pride

Downtown Kemptville is once again the place to be this summer as the core transforms into a vibrant hub of music, connection and community celebration. With free weekly programming and welcoming spaces throughout the downtown, there are many reasons to spend summer days and evenings in the heart of town.

One of the highlights of the season is South Branch Serenade, happening every Thursday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in July and August in Rotary Park. Set in a beautiful riverside setting, this relaxed outdoor concert series invites residents and visitors to bring a chair, gather with friends, or even arrive by boat to enjoy performances from a variety of talented musicians. It is an easygoing, family friendly way to unwind midweek while enjoying live music in the heart of the community.

Adding to the musical charm of the downtown core is Kemptville’s Street Piano, a public piano featuring a concert series and creative programming throughout the summer. Located beside the library, it brings a lively and creative musical presence to the downtown, showcasing a variety of performers and styles in a unique public space.

This series is presented by Lisa Poushinsky / Voyageur Art & Music School.

Both of these offerings are free to attend and enjoy, adding to the vibrant summer atmosphere in the downtown core and supporting accessible arts and culture for everyone.

As we move through the summer, it is also worth reflecting on the recent Canada Day celebrations. The downtown core was filled with energy, pride and community spirit, reminding us how fortunate we are to live in a place with such strong local roots. That same spirit continues beyond the holiday. Usually, not much, except that a community loses a local voice. By the time The Advance ceased publication, it was no longer locally owned and carried far less local content than it once had. But when the paper disappeared, it left something behind that most people never gave a second thought to: its newspaper boxes.

Those boxes are surprisingly expensive. Yet instead of being collected, they were simply abandoned. Today, they can still be found scattered throughout North Grenville, in parking lots, on municipal boulevards, attached to poles, tucked into bushes, and even lying in ditches. Some are plastic, some are metal, and all of them are reminders of a newspaper that no longer exists.

During last year's postal strike, we at the NG Times thought it would make sense to recycle some of these boxes for our own newspaper.

Before doing so, we contacted the Municipality, only to be told that we could not remove them because they were still the property of Metroland, publishers of the old Advance, even though many of them sat on municipal land.

That seemed difficult to understand.

Every spring, municipal crews collect abandoned items from roadsides, old sofas, refrigerators, broken furniture and countless other things that have clearly been discarded. Yet these newspaper boxes, which had also been abandoned, were apparently off limits unless Metroland gave permission.

So we tried to contact Metroland. We called several times. No one returned our calls. We sent emails. Again, silence. Finally, I contacted the Ontario Community Newspaper Association, of which the NG Times is a member. Through them, we received verbal permission to reclaim the boxes.

With the generous help of friends, (thank you to Allison Miller and George Logan), we spent several weeks driving throughout North Grenville collecting as many boxes as we could find.

The ones that could be restored were cleaned up and put back into service.

Those beyond repair were taken to the dump.

Unfortunately, we missed a few.

One remains on Dr. Gordon Drive in Kemptville beside the property of an 85-year-old resident. She lovingly

maintains the grass along that stretch and has even planted hostas to make it more attractive. At one point, she moved the abandoned newspaper box into the bushes, but somehow it found its way back on to the grassy area she cares for.

The box has become little more than a garbage bin. People toss flyers, coffee cups, food containers and other litter into it, leaving her to look at the mess every day. The same situation occurred at Victoria Park, where another abandoned box became overflowing with discarded flyers, food containers, and other lessthan-pleasant debris.

At some point, common sense should prevail.

These boxes are no longer serving the purpose for which they were built. If they have truly been abandoned, perhaps it is time to simply collect them, recycle what can be recycled, dispose of the rest, and stop leaving them as eyesores throughout our community.

Just my thoughts.

As for us, over the next month I'll be collecting our own NG Times boxes, now that we're back to distributing through Canada Post.

(Nee Lukas) Passed away peacefully the morning of 23 June at home while surrounded by family and love.

Ellinor was born 11 September 1935 in Kiel Germany where she met the love of her life Patrick Brown, whose ship was discharging cargo, on Christmas eve 1955. They were engaged the following year upon his return to Kiel and wed in Nov. 1956.

With the permission of the shipping line head office in NYC, Ellinor joined Patrick for the next three years as a non-paying passenger. While on board they visited ports around the world, experiencing hurricanes and typhoons, a ship to ship collision in the Straits of Gibraltar, running aground in La Havre France, and were surprised to discover a 15 year old stowaway from Takoradi Ghana.

In 1959 she left the ship in Baltimore MD to travel to Montreal to give birth their eldest son Robert. Late in 1959 she departed Montreal for the new poultry farm established by Patrick in South Gower Ontario. Following the birth of daughter Pamela in 1960 she independently ran the daily business of the farm while Patrick returned to government service. Several years after the birth of youngest son William she took a retail position with Ogilvey's Dept. store in Ottawa.

After retirement Ellinor and Patrick sought warmer climes in which to spend 3 months each winter including Australia, India, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Singapore, Malayasia, Thailand, Indonesia, Fiji and New Zealand.

Settling on Australia, arrangements were made to rent an apartment annually from January to April in Coffs Harbour NSW. Later they relocated to Palm Beach Queensland. This yearly trek continued until they were in their 80s and no longer capable of such long trips.

They then began travelling within Canada, travelling from coast to coast. Their visits include 3 Calgary Stampedes and several repeat trips to their favorite cities of Quebec and Victoria.

A gentle, loving and patient person, full of strength, determination and with an independent streak she enjoyed watching birds gather at her many feeders and occasionally chasing away squirrels only to feel somewhat guilty and later feed them as well. An ardent protector of wildlife, she often donated to animal shelters and rehab centers.

She immensely enjoyed spending time with her 9 grandchildren, whether travelling with them, watching puppet shows, cooking real meals or hosting pretend pirate parties she always ensured fair play and fun for all.

Ellinor is survived by husband Patrick, children Robert (Victoria), Pamela (Richard), William (Aline). Grandchildren Alexandra, Vanessa, Robyn, Christine, Angela, Katie, Andrew, Ian and Connor. Great grandchildren Ciena, Luka, Violet, Hudson and Rory.

Many thanks to Dr. Luong and the entire care team that ensured her comfort and provided excellent care and support these last months.

Having just returned from holidays "across the pond" a few days ago, I am having to play catch-up with all the birds still in our garden, and some of those who may have appeared during my absence. If there are any, they are always a pleasant surprise and well worth returning to.

For the bird pictures that I have selected for this week's article, you may notice that they are all looking to my/ our left, which is their right, hence my title of "They're All Right", and they have a "Bird Right" to be. I have to ‘fess up to the fact that they are not this week's birds and appeared in our garden in early June.

However, I can say for certain that the Hairy Woodpecker is a year round dweller and regular feeder here, and the Cedar Waxwings are a regular annual visitor, so I am not stretching the truth too far, I don't think!

However, the Crested Flycatcher was something else, and a different bird for us here. It was a real eye opener for my wife to discover, after she was able to identify it using the picture she took of it, taken with her, you've guessed it, her portable phone! The picture quality is quite amazing and I was able to upload it on to the Cornell University site for positive confirmation of her identification.

We were both very excited that she'd seen it and then had been able to follow-up by identifying it herself. I must admit, I was a little bit jealous that she had spotted it and done all the other stuff too, without any input at all from me! Say no more!

I hope that you are also benefitting from all this modern technology and are getting as good, if not better pictures of your own avian visitors. Enjoy!

by Diana Gifford-Jones What are the true tests of a healthcare system? Is it how well it resolves health problems? How it prevents them? How efficiently it operates? One question should be: how does it treat our eldest citizens? But the fact is, it's absurdly difficult for seniors to access care, submit claims, and navigate a plethora of disjointed systems.

People pay taxes for decades. They contribute to insurance plans. They work hard, raise a family and play by the rules. Then, when they finally need help after a stroke, a broken hip, or a heart attack, they are handed another form to complete, another approval to obtain, and one bureaucratic hurdle after another to clear.

In the United States, headlines have focused on insurance companies denying rehabilitation, long-term care, and other medically necessary services to older

patients. Many denials are overturned on appeal. But if the care was appropriate, why was it denied in the first place? How defeated are people in the process? How much illness is created, not cured?

Canada likes to congratulate itself for having a different system. But Canada has its own version of bureaucracy. Long waits for diagnostic tests. Delays for specialist appointments.

Programs that are nearly impossible to navigate. And, yes, diabolical mayhem with making claims to provincial programs or insurance companies.

If this isn't making people sick, their medications certainly are. Everywhere seniors are juggling too many medications because physicians and pharmaceutical companies have created an epidemic of excessive prescriptions. It should be no surprise what's happened as a result. Older people and

their caregivers are beaten down.

What is the price of the absurdity? Governments worry about the rising cost of caring for an aging population. But what's truly worrisome is the failure to care at all. Getting care has become too complex for all of us, but especially for the elderly. A national survey should ask this question: "have you given up?"

Can't get an appointment? Can't get there if you do? Can't get the right forms or figure them out? Don't even know you are missing the forms? How much time and money is spent dealing with paperwork? How many hospital admissions could be avoided if someone took the time to review a senior's dozen prescriptions? How many older people deteriorate unnecessarily while waiting for approvals, referrals or appointments?

These are not questions for debate. They are management imperatives. In other industries, executives measure customer satisfaction, identify bottlenecks and eliminate waste. If an airline stranded thousands of paying customers every day, heads would roll. If a bank required six approvals to cash a cheque, shareholders would revolt. The excuse is always that health care is "complex." But so is avia-

tion. So is nuclear power.

Complexity is not an excuse for inefficiency. It is a reason to manage better.

What worries me most is the growing distance between decision-makers and patients. Increasingly, care is being managed by algorithms, utilization reviews, budget targets and policy frameworks. Somewhere beneath all that paperwork is an 82-year-old woman recovering from pneumonia who simply wants to go home, or an 89-year-old man hoping to walk again after hip surgery.

Here's my challenge to every health minister, deputy minister, insurance executive, and hospital CEO. Go spend time shadowing an 85-year-old who is trying to book an appointment, or trying to get to it. Check to see if they understand their medication list. Try to join them for a call with their physician and see if anyone answers the telephone.

Then tell us that the system is working as intended and that it cares for those who need it most.

On Aging

by Marguerite Boyer I have been doing a lot of reflecting on life as I approach my seventies. So many memories, some good, some not so good.

Years ago, my parents moved from their home into a condo in Ottawa.

They had to downsize. From there, they had no choice but to move into a seniors' residence as their health declined and dementia and Alzheimer's took hold of both of them.

I remember, vividly, the day we moved them. My task was to take them out for the day and keep them occupied, away from the movers.

My mom cried on and off all day, while my stepfather remained in stony silence. It was heartbreaking. Things became easier when they slipped into full dementia, but it was never emotionally easy for us siblings.

When my stepfather died and my mom could no longer remain in the seniors' residence, we moved her to Nova Scotia into an apartment attached to my sister's large home, where she received around the clock care. Once again, we had to downsize her life.

Watching my parents decline and slowly give up their possessions made a

lasting impression on me.

I decided I never wanted to reach that point. So when we sold our home, we donated much of our furniture and tools to the ReStore and moved into a small apartment. We wanted to travel more and not have the burden of maintaining a house, or being tied down by possessions. The hardest thing for me to part with was my John Deere riding lawn mower.

Well, here we are in 2026. We bought a small bungalow only because during Covid it was cheaper to buy a house than to rent, due to rent increases. It made more sense, and somehow we seem to be right back where we started. We have repurchased furniture and tools. Once again, we're gathering possessions, a basement that is almost an archive of North Grenville history, books, vinyl records, and far too much clutter.

How did I end up back here again? I honestly don't know.

A few weeks ago, I visited an artist friend and his wife, now both in their nineties. They still lived in a large house that had become almost a shrine to their daughter, with whom they had shared the home until

she died suddenly.

They told me it was time to move.

I remember his wife saying, "But how can I leave?

This house is full of memories of my daughter."

His art studio, just a short flight of stairs away, was no longer accessible to him. He quietly admitted that he had also lost the desire to paint.

I see this story repeated over and over again, and I really don't want to become that person.

Perhaps that's one of the great challenges of aging. It isn't simply about growing older; it's about knowing when to let go. Our homes, our collections, and our treasured possessions all tell the story of our lives, but they are not our lives. The memories remain, whether we carry them in a house filled with things, or in our hearts.

I'm not sure I've learned that lesson yet. Looking around my own basement, I'd have to admit I probably haven't. But maybe acknowledging it is the first step. After all, we spend the first half of our lives collecting, and perhaps the second half is about learning what truly deserves to be kept.

This month we honored 14 golfers for their first birdie of the season: Marie Coady, Brenda Clark, Erika Csiffary, Line Fortin, Teresa Guertin, Yvonne Lane, Cathy Maur, Cat McCarthy, Sue Murphy, Laurie Perkins, Tanya Peters, Carolyn Reed, Suzanne Sampson, and Mary Windsor.

For her first time breaking 90 this season, we recognised Donna Lush. And for their first time breaking 100 this season: Yvonne Lane, Tanya Peters, Suzanne Sampson, Donna Tapp, and Jenny Thibert.

In July, our regular play will be topped up by the Dickenson tournament, a ‘Friendly' in Prescott, and the Ottawa Valley Golf Association Intersectionals.

Celebrating Canada Day – RGLL-style

by Joan Beauregard Canada Day started one day early this year for our League. On June 30, 85 of our members showed up to golf, celebrate, and strut our best red and white. Thanks to our Golf Committee for their efforts for making the day a special celebration.

Our month-end fun-game was an adaptation of bestball format, with the player whose shot was used as the best-shot having to skip the succeeding shot. The day's best score was 35; made by the team of Brenda Lawson, Marie Coady, Glenda Helem, and Suzanne Sampson.

In addition to our roster of regular games, June also brought the friendly competition of our annual Jean Hyndman and Super-Seniors' tournaments. On June 11, thirty-eight golfers took to the course for the Jean Hyndman tournament. The winners this year were First Place: Leslie Cheal, and Runner-up: Donna Lush.

Our Super-Seniors, twoperson best-ball tournament, followed on June 25, with twenty-four players vying for honours. The results were really tight this year.

Cheryle Canning and Cathy Maur placed First with a score of 37. Three twosomes tied for Second with a score of 39. The decision was made by hardest holes, and it took three holes to declare Marg McCornock and Jennifer Carkner as the Runners up.
