When I call her a "Tough Old Bird," I mean it as the highest compliment.

She is the kind of person I hope to be when I reach that age, although I have a long way to go.

Janne simply doesn't understand the word no. Her passion for the Shalom Homes project is unwavering, and nothing seems to stand in her way. After raising

the funds to build four small homes, she could easily have called it a day. Instead, she has set her sights on raising the money for many more.

On Friday, surrounded by family, friends, MPP Steve Clark, and three members of North Grenville Council, Janne was presented with the Senior of the Year Award in recognition of her outstanding dedication to the community.

"North Grenville is stronger because of the

seniors who call our community home," said Mayor Nancy Peckford.

"Their leadership, resilience, and dedication continue to inspire us.

They generously contribute so much of their time and expertise to countless community groups. Seniors Month is an opportunity to celebrate them and to reaffirm our commitment to supporting programs and services that ensure they stay active, connected, and engaged."

It’s the Folk Club at the Street Piano this Saturday, where members will join forces, voices, and instruments in song. With a membership nearing 50, the club was formed to foster the growth and development of musical talent in North Grenville. From beginners to pros, the Kemptville Folk Club is made up of all levels of players and singers. Members gather regularly to collaborate, grow their talents, and share their skills and their passion for music. Experience the fun on Saturday and who knows, maybe you’ll become one of the “folks” too!

Who is it for? Street Pianos draw pedestrians, turning any location into a concert venue / cultural hub. By giving residents an instrument to play together, this project encourages locals to share their knowledge, initiate their own ‘play’, and create relationships, setting

A Bunch of People Arts and Events (ABOP) Car Rally/Scavenger Hunt is BACK! "Grab a friend, name your team, get in your car and find the answers to the clues! First Team wins $100 and the profit from this event goes to House of Lazarus!", shouted the event lead, Suzanne Millaire from across the room.

"As a board of directors, each year we decide what we will do for events," Amanda Burger, founder and President of the Board, explained. "Last year we did not do the Car Rally/ Scavenger Hunt and we discovered that so many people were disappointed; Sue ran into a supporter who always does the Car Rally and he told her how he intended to win this year! So, this year we have brought it back!

Participants are expected to check in at 10:30 am at 457 Min St. E, Winchester.

Participants will need to sign a liability waiver and complete the registration information before they are given the list of items to hunt for starting at 11 a.m.. They also promised to submit a mouth watering, envy-inducing report on their vacation to remind you, the reader, that it’s the cheapest way to travel.

It just occurred to me that this is the best way to generate new members to join the club. This has two benefits: 1. You get to volunteerand 2. by club rules, you are not allowed to buy a ticket. Optics you know. Who wants to see club members win, right? As a member you save money.

Summer side of life

It’s that time of year when I have to do my Summer Song playlist. So, let’s pretend, if only for a short time, that there’s nothing going on in the world to make us unhappy, uncomfortable, insecure, or anxious. A hard task, to be sure, but it’s Summer with a capital S, so why not be a little silly? After all, there’s plenty of time to focus on the negative, isn’t there?

No, it’s Summertime and the living is easy, and in the Summertime, says Mungo Jerry, when the weather is high you can stretch right up and touch the sky. So sing a Summer day reflection song with Donovan.

Listen to the hissing of Summer lawns with Joni Mitchell, and enjoy the feel of the Summer breeze with Seals and Crofts. It makes me feel fine, blowin’ through the jasmine in my mind… Eh? Does none of this make sense to you? You may need to cast your mind back to remember some of the great songs of the past to remember that Summer

with Garth Brooks, maybe as far back as the Summer of ‘69 with Bryan Adams?

Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be, as Bryan found out: Oh, when I look back now, that summer seemed to last forever. And if I had the choice, yeah, I’d always wanna be there. Those were the best days of my life.

What Summer holiday do you remember most?

Cliff Richard believes that everybody loves a Summer holiday, doing things we always wanted to. Fun and laughter on a Summer holiday, perhaps, unless it was Summer in the city, which is not so cool. The Lovin’ Spoonful found that there doesn’t seem to be a shadow in the city. All around, people lookin’ half dead walkin’ on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head. But at night it’s a different thing. Oh, the Summer nights, to quote John Travolta, not to mention Olivia!

People like to go places in the Summertime. The Pogues liked Summer in Siam, because, they said, when it’s summer in Siam and the moon is full of rainbows, you can enjoy the Summer side of life.

Gordon Lightfoot agreed with that, claiming that there was no illusions on the summer side of life.

Only tenderness. And what could be better than that, I ask you? So dancing days are here again, as the summer evenings grow.

Led Zep said so, so it must be so. I remember Chubby Checker saying the same thing, encouraging all: let’s twist again, like we did last Summer.

A happy Summer memory for me: the month I graduated from High School, Alice Cooper sang a special song just for me: School’s out for Summer, School’s out forever, school’s out completely!

Ah yes, Summertime and the living is indeed easy.

Or it was, until I had to get a job! But I remember that Summer in Dublin and the Liffey as it stank like hell. And the young people walking on Grafton street, and everyone looking so well. Hot fun in the Summertime, as Sly Stone put it. Summer’s here and the time is right for dancing in the street.

But maybe it’s just too hot to think about dancing in the streets. We

could follow Ray Davies’ advice and just be lazing on a sunny afternoon in the summertime. Perhaps a glass of Summer wine?

Nancy Sinatra singing to Lee Hazlewood: strawberries, cherries and an angel’s kiss in spring. My summer wine is really made from all these things. You could fall asleep to that, but watch out for the hangover.

There’s something about Summer that creates memories, isn’t there?

In those past days of summer, it seemed like they lasted longer than they do today. You remember people you knew, things you did. Like Kid Rock put it: It’s the simple things in life like when and where. We didn’t have no internet, but man, I never will forget the way the moonlight shined upon her hair. Singing Sweet Home Alabama all Summer long.

Things didn’t always go well, even in the Summer.

Hearts can be broken, you could be stuck in a boring job when everyone else was outside playing in the sun. There ain’t no cure for the Summertime blues, I guess. But be positive: the world may be going mad,

Letter to the editor Dear Editor, On Saturday June 20, I had the privilege and honour of attending the Celebration of Life for Dr. Larry Butler. It was a huge gathering that came to meet his family, say a few words, exchange tears and stories, and raise a tot of Jamieson's in his honour.

Dr. Butler was my first large animal vet, when I bought my horse and donkey in 2007. I realised very quickly that he was an oldschool horse vet, extremely knowledgeable about horse lameness, feeding, breeding, and all things equine.

He didn't joke, he didn't laugh, he was all business, and that was fine by me. I'd been raised by one of these horsemen, men that have forgotten more than many of us would ever remember.

Midnight calls about my donkey making a burping sound, which turned out to be donkey choke (who knew?). What are "scratches"? I found out that my donkey was afflicted by them, caused by fly bites on the lower legs. Dr. Butler knew it, and I didn't doubt July 2,, 2026

his diagnoses.

What impacted me about Larry was what was shared by his family and close friends. It was a side I didn't know existed. He was an avid athlete, starting in grade school and onwards to high school.

He continued to love to ski and I saw beautiful pictures of him doing just that at his celebration. He was always there for his boys, be it hockey or whatever was going on. He'd be doing overnights but would make it to that game, that event, no matter what. He travelled with his kids and grandkids, to keep active and enjoy life. It was a refreshing side of this man that I was very happy I learned about.

Dr. Butler left us much too early. Health issues caused him to sell his practice before he was ready, but he kept going, doing, being until he couldn't any longer. He was a private man and his final illness was not shared widely. ALS took him from us, and no disease could be crueler to

again, still, but we have our Summer memories and our Summers present and future to revel in.

Personally, I don’t really enjoy the whole walkin’ on sunshine thing. I tend to stay indoors, unless it’s Summer in Dublin again. I was singing a song I heard somewhere called Rock and Roll never forgets…

They go together, Summer and songs.

So, take a few minutes now and then and play a Summer song. Sing along and maybe even move to the groove, throw a few shapes, dance like noone is watching you. The troubles of the world will still be there when you’re finished, so it’s ok to take a break from the screens and the news and the downers. Don’t let the blues win, because there ain’t no cure for the Summertime blues.

Whisper it: Winter is coming again one day. Yes, there’s always a song for a Winter’s night, as Gordon sang so well, but here comes the sun, it’s been a long, cold, lonely winter.

Here comes the sun and I say: it’s alright.

2026 Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Fund Recipients

The Municipality of North Grenville’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee (EDIAC) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2026 Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Fund. At its meeting on June 24, 2026, North Grenville Council approved the Committee’s recommendation to support three community initiatives that advance equity, diversity and inclusion across the municipality.

“These projects are a wonderful example of what happens when people come together to build a stronger, more welcoming community," said Mayor Nancy Peckford. "Council is proud to support initiatives that leverage in-kind resources, grassroots enthusiasm and volunteer contributions. Celebrating our diversity and creating opportunities for connection helps to ensure ev-

eryone in North Grenville feels like they belong. Congratulations to this year's recipients for turning great ideas into meaningful action.”

Each project has been awarded up to $3,000 to help foster inclusion, amplify diverse voices, and create welcoming opportunities for underrepresented groups: • • Rainbow Curling Nights: Creating a safe and welcoming space for members of North Grenville’s 2SLGBTQI+ community of all ages to explore the sport of curling and build social connections.

• • Empowering Latin American Women in Kemptville Workshops: Supporting immigrant and racialized women through culturally responsive wellness and empowerment

Canada Cares One Wish Awards 2026 sessions focused on

mental well-being, identity, and community connection.

• • Interactive Learning Tools Development: Creating a board game and educational videos focused on inclusion, lived experience, and understanding privilege to support local equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility training initiatives.

These projects reflect EDIAC’s ongoing commitment to fostering a community where all residents, regardless of identity, ability, or background, feel welcomed, valued, and supported.

The Municipality extends its congratulations to this year’s recipients and thanks all applicants for their contributions toward building a more inclusive North Grenville.

Every day, millions of Canadians step into the role of a caregiver. They help aging parents, brothers, sisters, neighbors, and friends living with disabilities. They provide transportation to medical appointments, coordinate care, advocate for services, and offer emotional support while serving as a critical source of care and advocacy for their loved ones.

Much of this work happens behind closed doors and often goes unrecognized. Caregivers frequently juggle jobs, family obligations, and personal challenges, while asking for little in return. The Canada Cares Awards were created to shine a light on these remarkable individuals and recognize the many forms caregiving can take.

Canada Cares has had the privilege of recognizing caregivers from all walks of life. Previous recipients have included an aging parent providing full-time care for their adult son with complex needs; a young caregiver raising a sibling while completing school; a grandparent supporting multiple family members

Across Ontario, June is regarded as a time to honour the achievements, wisdom, and influence of seniors, and to highlight the importance of supporting healthy, active, and connected aging.

In North Grenville, seniors play a vital role in building a vibrant, inclusive, and caring community. Their leadership, volunteerism, and life experience continue to enrich the social fabric of our municipality and enhance our collective quality of life.

Mayor Peckford, Council members and MPP Steve Clarke were delighted to recognize local resident Janne Ritskes as North Grenville's 2026 Recipient of the Ontario Senior of the Year Award. This award is presented annually and recognizes seniors who have made outstanding contributions to enriching the social, cultural, or civic life of their community after age 65. Janne has made an indelible impact in North Grenville though her commitment to creating a more inclusive and caring environment and initiating the construction of small homes for vulnerable seniors through the creation of the charitable organization, Shalom Small Homes.

Council representatives also attended the annual Seniors’ Community Services BBQ in recognition of Seniors Month, an opportunity to connect, celebrate, and thank local seniors for their many contributions. North Grenville Seniors' Community Services offers a wide variety of programs and services designed to enhance and support living with wellness, independence and vitality.

While each story is different, they all share one thing in common: an extraordinary commitment to caring for others.

Canada Cares is now inviting Canadians to nominate caregivers, healthcare professionals, and community champions in their own lives. The Canada Cares Awards recognize individuals whose contributions may not always be visible to others, but whose dedication and support has left a lasting impact on them.

Nominate them today, celebrate their contributions, and share how a One Wish Award could support them. Canada Cares is a program of the Canadian Abilities Foundation. Over 15 years we've educated, recognized and given financial supports to hundreds of families looking after aging relatives, adults

and young children with physical, cognitive, emotional challenges related to disability, medical conditions, frailty, addiction.

Just the facts: One in four Canadians is a caregiver to a family member or a friend, and 50% of Canadians will be caregivers at some point in their lives.

One in five caregivers spends at least $1,000 per month out-of-pocket on caregiving expenses.

47% of Caregivers reported being tired, worried or anxious (44%), or overwhelmed (37%) because of their caregiving responsibilities.

About one in four young caregivers (aged 18 to 24) had to work more hours due to the costs of caregiving.

One in five caregivers in Canada lives in a rural area.

Young caregivers spend 14 to 27 hours of their week providing care (equivalent to a part-time job).

Over 40% of all people living in poverty in the country represent people with disabilities, and almost one million people in Canada with a disability live below the poverty line.

34% of sibling caregivers are most commonly caring for siblings with disabilities, and 28% of the people they care for are under 18 years old.

History page: Oxford Mills: capital in the past

South Branch students give to Habitat

by David Shanahan 180 years ago, Oxford Mills was undisturbed forest. Aside from occasional hunting parties of Indigenous warriors, it had become an empty land, the frontline between Algonquin and Iroquois. When Oxford-on-Rideau was surveyed and granted to Loyalist refugees fleeing their homes after taking the losing side in the American War of Independence, it remained unsettled as the new land owners had already set up homes in the townships on the Saint Lawrence. Then, around 1844, Asa Clothier paddled up the South Branch river from his family’s mill at Kemptville looking for another site to develop.

He settled on this place, and began to build a saw mill. It was a good choice of location and by the summer of 1845, Clothier had bought the entire west half of lot 17 and had built a wooden dam to provide power for a saw mill. The investment proved very profitable indeed. Clothier had bought the 100 acre lot for £550 in 1845. When he sold 80 acres of it to Rickey Waugh and Aaron Merrick in 1850, he received the fine amount of £1,700, a clear indication of the increased potential value the dam and mill brought to the land.

Waugh and Merrick had a village laid out into lots in 1854 and these were gradually sold to settlers and the community grew over the decades. Waugh bought out Merrick in 1857 and he and his wife soon had a thriving business in land sales, milling, and commercial operations. Waught extended the saw mill and added a stone dam, a flour mill, and built a large stone residence and store, now the Brigadoon Restaurant. Business was

by Angela Campbell The Meaning of Home Contest is an annual, national creative writing contest. Grades 4, 5, and 6 students across Canada are invited to submit a poem or essay about what home means to them, which in turn raises funds and awareness for Habitat for Humanity across Canada.

Total Participation: Over 156,000 students have participated.

Funds Raised: It has raised more than $3.4 million for affordable housing initiatives in local communities.

Student Impact: Ev-

ery entry secures a $10 donation for the student's local Habitat for Humanity provided by the contest sponsors.

Total Prizes: Three grand prize winners win a $30,000 grant that is directed to their local Habitat build, alongside other prizes like tablets for the three winners and class pizza parties. Nine other secondary winners win a $10,000 grant which is also directed to the local Habitat build along with tablets for the winners and and class pizza parties.

ville, Ontario went one step further. Not only did they enter the contest but they created visual art representing what their home meant to them and why Habitat for Humanity is so important to families and communities. On June 22nd they presented their art to ReStore Director, Lisa Hutt and Executive Director, Anthony Conte to be displayed at the Kemptville ReStore – a fitting reminder that the students of our schools and Habitat for Humanity play vital parts of the community in which we live.

so good, in fact, that he later built a second impressive stone residence for his family across the street from the store, and both buildings stand today as memorials to a oncepromising entrepreneur.

When the village of Kemptville separated from Oxford-on-Rideau in 1857, Oxford Mills became the capital of the Township, the municipal centre and geographical heart of the region, with Waugh acting as its first Reeve.

The village soon boasted two hotels, three churches, stores, bakeries, a number of blacksmiths, and other trades. It held an annual Fair every year from 1854, and the future seemed bright.

But things went sour very quickly for Waugh in particular. The 1860's saw a succession of droughts and floods, and business collapsed. Competition from Kemptville was an added problem, as the railway had arrived there in 1854, bypassing Oxford Mills, and making the transportation of goods more expensive and burdensome. Waugh continued to operate the mill for the next few years, but in 1870 he sold most of his remaining property in and around Oxford Mills.

The following year he sold the mill and his cheese factory to Lyman Beach, and his house across from the store to John Gilmer. In 1871, Rickey Waugh and his family left Oxford Mills for good.

The hamlet continued to grow, although it never reached the levels the early settlers had hoped for. As long as it was the municipal centre, there would be business and social opportunities. Increasing numbers of children meant that schools were outgrown and the new two-roomed school at Maplewood was

opened in 1875 and continued in operation for another 90 years before the Oxford-on-Rideau Public School replaced all the one-room schools in the Township in 1965.

Oxford Mills had a busy social life, along with a library, grocery stores, a Post Office, and all the requirements of an active community. 1939 brought a serious loss, however.

The Post Office caught fire one night. It was located in one of the old hotels, a wood framed building that was very vulnerable to the flames. People braved the fire to rescue the cash, stamps, and other valuables and brought them to the grocery store across the street for safekeeping.

Unfortunately, the fire also crossed the street and destroyed the store, so both store and Post Office were lost in one night. The old hotel building was never replaced, and the Post Office moved to another location. The population declined over time, but stats show that as late as 1959, Oxford Mills had a population of 132, with 44 houses, 2 general stores, a post office, two halls, three churches, a school, a vacant grist mill and dam, a cemetery, an electrical shop, a garage, and two bridges.

When Oxford-onRideau was amalgamated with Kemptville and South Gower in 1998, it brought to an end an independent municipal existence that had lasted for 140 years, and the centre of municipal affairs moved once again to Kemptville. But, as every Canada Day shows, Oxford Mills remains at the heart of North Grenville, and continues to be a focus for celebrations of all kinds, continuing a long tradition that goes back 180 years. www.ngtimes.ca

Opening the farm gate builds trust

By Drew Spoelstra, President, OFA Last weekend, my family and I had the privilege of welcoming thousands of visitors to our farm in Binbrook near Hamilton as the hosts of Breakfast on the Farm, an event organized several times a year by Farm & Food Care Ontario in various locations across Ontario.

For farmers, opening our farms to the public is not something we do every day. Farming is our workplace, our livelihood and, for most of us, also our home. But events like Breakfast on the Farm provide an opportunity that is simply too valuable to pass up: the chance to connect directly with the people we grow food for and show firsthand the skill, passion and, yes, tech-

nology that goes into food production today.

For many visitors, this was their first time setting foot on a working farm. They had the opportunity to tour our barn, see many types of farm animals up close, learn about animal care, food safety and environmental stewardship, and ask questions directly to farmers and industry experts. Visitors could also climb on to tractors and other farm equipment, getting a firsthand look at the technology and innovation that farmers use every day.

One of the highlights of the day was the birth of a calf during the event, a reminder that farming is not a display or an exhibit, but a living, working business that continues every day of the year.

Agriculture is a complex sector, and many of the decisions made by governments directly affect the ability of farm businesses to remain competitive and continue producing food.

There is tremendous value in bringing decision-makers on to farms so they can see firsthand the realities of modern agriculture in ways that can't be captured in a boardroom or a policy document. Better understanding often leads to better policy decisions.

We also appreciated the support of many of our other partners who helped make the day possible, such as organizations representing a wide range of farmers, including grain, dairy, egg, beef, chicken and more, as well as the Greenbelt Foundation, local 4-H members, volunteers, businesses and community partners. Together, they help showcase the diversity and strength of Ontario agriculture.

Hosting Breakfast on

the Farm was an honour and a privilege for our family. More importantly, it was an opportunity to help strengthen the connection between farmers and the people we feed every day. Those connections are important. They build trust, increase understanding and help ensure Ontario agriculture remains strong for generations to come.

Don passed away peacefully at home on June 7th, 2026, with his beloved wife Mary Lou Munz by his side. Don is survived by his wife Mary Lou and his children, Lisa & Mike Szelong, Gail & Gary Fassler, Michael & Stacy Akalski and Susan Lee (and former Patrick) McDonald. Don was predeceased by his loving daughter Laurel and son Steven. Papa is mourned by his grandchildren, Christopher, Jared, Ashley, Lyndsay Corey, Weston, Laurel (II), Kevin, Ellen, Mary Kate, Michael, Kevin, Miles and Bryce, He will be greatly missed by his great-grandchildren, Gabriel, McKenzie, Christian, Jacob, Michael (II), Zane, Devon, Dylan, Gage, Trae, Neve, El, Chloe Nolan and Elaina Lou. Cremation and private family burial have been arranged. Helena “Lorna” Salzarulo, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, operating room nurse, golfer, dancer, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on June 4, 2026, at the age of 98.

Dani and her sisters honored Lorna's wish that her final years be spent in her home at beloved Meadowood.

Lorna lived a remarkably full life, defined by her energy, generosity, and her deep love of family and friends. She embraced every opportunity for adventure and connection, whether golfing, ballroom dancing, playing and teaching bridge, playing bocce and corn hole, traveling by plane, train, ship and automobile; boating, fishing, entertaining, cooking, shopping, or simply enjoying the company of those she loved. Even in her 98th year, she remained vibrant, engaged, and always ready for the next outing or celebration.

Lorna was born Helena Lorna Render on November 14, 1927, in Oxford Mills, Ontario, Canada, to Lorne and Elsie (Weir) Render. She attended schools in Kemptville, Ontario, and graduated from the Ontario Hospital's Registered Nurse Program in 1950. Seeking further education and opportunity, she moved to New York City and completed the Operating Room Technique and Management Program at New York Polyclinic Medical School and Hospital in 1951. Lorna’s long nursing career reflected her intelligence, dedication, and leadership.

She served as a Staff Nurse at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and later as Operating Room Supervisor at University Heights Hospital in the Bronx. In 1961, she joined Smithtown General Hospital, where she served as Operating Room Supervisor for more than two decades. While working full-time and raising a family, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree with Honors from the New York Institute of Technology in 1980 at the age of 52—a testament to her lifelong commitment to learning and personal growth.

While living in New York City, Lorna met the dashing naval officer Daniel Salzarulo. They married in 1953 and built a loving life together in New York City, Commack, Long Island, and Jensen Beach, Florida raising their three daughters: Dani, Peri, and Rana. Their marriage of 31 years ended with Daniel’s death in 1984 following a courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma.

After relocating to Florida, Lorna continued her nursing career at St. Lucie Hospital while pursuing her growing passion for golf at Meadowood Golf Club. She eventually retired from nursing but never retired from living. In 2000, she and her beloved partner, Joe McGuigan, built a home in Meadowood, and they enjoyed 30 wonderful years together surrounded by friends, golf, dancing, and community life.

An accomplished golfer, Lorna achieved the extraordinary feat of recording nine holesin-one at Meadowood! Off the course, she was known for her elegance and style, always “dressed to impress” and often was the first person on the dance floor. Ballroom dancing became one of her greatest joys, and it was through dancing that she met Joe, with whom she shared many happy years.

Lorna was the devoted mother of Dani Lee, Peri Salzarulo Kenny, her caring son-in-law Tom Kenny and Rana Salzarulo Johnson. She was a proud grandmother to Spirogrigorios, Petros, and Sophia Papadatos, and Caila, Alexandra, and Dirk Johnson Jr. Her joy multiplied with the arrival of her great-grandchildren: Apollonas, Prometheus, Orpheus, and Hellas Kalouris; Lydia and Petros Papadatos; and Miles Alexander Iverson. She is also lovingly remembered by Joe McGuigan’s children and grandchildren, whom she embraced as members of her extended family.

Lorna was predeceased by her husband, Daniel Salzarulo; her partner, Joe McGuigan; her siblings Alan, Retta, Willis, and Jack; and her devoted brother-in-law, Joel Salzarulo. She is survived by her sister Shirley, whose 100th birthday celebration in Newfoundland, Lorna was thrilled to attend on January 1, 2026. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends and her favorite dog Zoe. Lorna’s family extends heartfelt gratitude to the entire Meadowood community for the friendship, kindness, and support shown to Lorna throughout the 26 years she called Meadowood home.

Special thanks are also extended to Treasure Coast Hospice and their compassionate caregivers for their exceptional care and comfort and her aide Z Locascio.

Lorna’s life was one of boundless energy, generosity, and love. Her warmth, joie de vivre, and incredible spirit will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

by G.J. the sportsguy This past weekend the North Grenville Municipal Complex was inundated with young sixteen to twenty year old athletic gentlemen from Canada and USA hauling hockey gear with sticks to display their skills to solidify a spot in the 2026/2027 roster.

Seventy ice warriors comprising fourteen vets with fifty-eight newbies formed the four team roster to begin the process of elimination for the final All Star competition on Sunday.

Friday afternoon opened with a practice from 5 pm and commencing with a game closing down the day at 11 pm. Saturday was a full day with a one hour sessions for the eight goalies at 10 am, with the teams already finalized straight time games ran from 11 am to 2 pm and 4 pm to 8 pm to determine the cuts for the Sunday All Star game.

The Sunday All Star forty minute straight time game from 10 am to Noon consisted of four lines of offense, three lines of defense and two goal tenders for each team. Team Black squad was made of one vet goalie with one newbie, two vets on defense and five vets with seven newbies. Team White had two newbie stoppers, two vets with four newbies and five offense vets with seven newbies. Both Team Black and Team White made a statement with a back and forth effort to lock down a five even romp after the final two forty minute contests.

The Coach felt this camp was very competitive, intensive and one of the better camps since his tenure, with some players that warrant the opportunity to join the team next year, but still need to finalize the details. Overall a successful weekend of development for next season.

A Head in the Game

As we start into yet another month, our thoughts stay focused on what to do in the school holidays with ourselves, our kids, and even the Grandkids, before they turn to thoughts of a new school year and also of the late year's events that will very soon be on us. Meanwhile, the birds still keep up in their persistent search for food and don't disappoint us in that respect, when they visit our feeders, which some of us try to keep stocked throughout the year. With that in mind, I have just gone out to

my feeders at the front of the house and did my due diligence, so the birds will be catered for over the coming days.

My article title is supposed to illustrate, I hope, what my pictures convey, those being the upper body and head shots of some of our birds which I see in the garden and beyond. It is gratifying when you can zoom in on the face of a bird and really get to know it! Hopefully, many of you are doing this with either your cameras or binoculars.

I tend to rely on my camera and its telephoto capabilities whenever I am out and about, or even just sitting looking out of the window. Very

often, when I am out in my car, it will be ready and to-hand behind my driving seat, just in case something to catch my attention comes to eye along the roads travelled. My wife often says when I mention seeing something when not having my camera with me, "Did you use your phone to get it?", to which I answer her, "No", which gets the immediate response of "Why not!?" Duh! What can I say!? ( Don't tell me, please!)

Talking of not having my camera to-hand, whilst in the process of writing this article and doing my bird duty of replenishing their bird water bowl, a flock of Cedar Waxwings passed through the garden on the way to somewhere else. Just my luck to be caught off guard once again!

I hope that you have a good summer, of bird watching and have got your own pictures and stories to tell and, much like the fishermen amongst us, can relate those of "The one that got away!" Well, I think that in this particular scenario, I am "A Head in The Game!".

Board of Health update for June 2026

CROSSWORD

The Southeast Public Health (SEPH) Board of Health met in Kingston for their regular monthly meeting.

Board Chair re-appointed: The Board passed a motion to re-appoint Nathan Townend as Chair for the remainder of 2026. Townend previously sat on the SEPH Board as an elected official. He recently left his elected municipal office role to accept the position of Director of Communications and Community Development with the County of Lennox and Addington, and the county re-appointed him as their representative to the SEPH Board. Nathan noted that he was pleased to continue serving in the role of Board Chair, and to provide leadership continuity for the remainder of 2026.

Strategic plan update: Following a presentation by facilitator Erik Lockhart, the Board passed a motion to receive and endorse the direction for the 2026-2028 strategic plan and assess the financial implications of it at the July 22 Board meeting.

The direction for strategic plan was developed by the Board with the core purpose of “ensuring every community in the Southeast has access to high quality, equitable public health services delivered by a unified and trusted health unit working with communities and partners”. The final plan will go to the Board in August for approval.

Staff presentation: Blastomycosis inquest recommendations: Deputy Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ethan Toumishey provided a presentation on SEPH’s response to the recommendations made by the coroner’s inquest into a fatal blastomycosis outbreak in Constance Lake First Nation in late 2021, early 2022. Blastomycosis is an infection caused by a fungus (Blastomyces) that grows most commonly in moist soil and decaying wood and leaves. The outbreak resulted in five deaths and more than 50 infections in the community of 750.

The coroner's inquest, which concluded in late 2025, examined the circumstances surrounding these deaths and issued recommendations aimed at preventing similar events in the future. Five of the recommendations require Boards of Health to report back how they will implement the recommendations. The Board has endorsed SEPH’s proposed responses to the coroner's inquest recommendations and directed staff to submit them to the Office of the Chief Coroner on their behalf.

SEPH logo wins prestigious international award: The SEPH identity recently received the gold award in the Logo/Letterhead Design category at the 43rd Annual Healthcare Advertising Awards. With more than 4,300 entries submitted from around the world, the Healthcare Advertising Awards are among the largest and most recognized health-care marketing competitions internationally.

This achievement reflects the talent and dedication of the SEPH Communications Team, as well as the expertise of branding and marketing consultant Scott Thornley and Company (STC).

So before your guests or families assault you with knives and forks, feed them a lovely Fresh Avocado Dip with some Nacho chips. Accompany it with cold beer in a sweating mug!

Fresh Avocado Dip

Ingredients • 1 cucumber, peeled, seeded and diced • 1 large tomato, skinned and diced • 2 green onions, finely chopped • ½ cup refried beans (available in cans) • ¼ cup of chicken stock • 1 tablespoon of chopped seeded Jalapeno pepper • 2 ripe avocadoes, peeled, with the flesh pureed (just use a fork) • 3 tablespoons of lemon juice • A squirt or two of Olive oil • A sprinkle of black pepper Preparation • Place the cucumber, tomato and green onions in a bowl and stir them together • Heat the refried beans with the chicken stock in a small pan till warm • Mix them into your vegetables • Add the Jalapeno pepper, avocado and lemon juice and mix well • Place in your favourite dip dish • Sprinkle with olive oil and black pepper and chill for up to a half hour Serve this dip with the largest Nacho chips you can find or make your own by baking cut up raw tortilla shells till they are golden (this cuts down on the salt so it’s a lot healthier).

Young adults are exchanging the grit of independence for the illusion of wealth

by Nick Kossovan Previous generations didn't wait for a perfect economy to grow up, largely because they knew no such luxury existed.

Economic hardship wasn't an excuse; it was the grindstone on which character was sharpened. It wasn't that long ago that you kept your head down, worked long hours, honoured your commitments, and didn't expect to inherit the kingdom before you'd even swept the floors. There was a baseline understanding of how life works. Paying your dues was simply the price of admission to adulthood, a destination young people aspired to, rather than resisted.

Previous generations possessed something I find glaringly absent among today's curated youth: selfrespect. … being able to look at myself in the mirror.

Self-respect isn't a feeling you conjure with positive affirmations; it's a tangible asset earned solely through the fric-

tion of working towards self-reliance and the many obstacles life places in your path. It's the quiet, unshakeable confidence that comes from looking at a stack of your monthly bills, a difficult career path, and a small apartment furnished with thrift-store buys and curbside finds, and knowing: I'm funding this, I'm steering this, and if it breaks, I have the grit to move forward.

Today, the mindset of honouring "the grind" and simply doing what you have to do is dismissed, even laughed at. That's an easy viewpoint to have when you're content to let your parents bankroll your lifestyle. Yet, despite the endless excuses and false narratives young adults fabricate to explain their dependency, an unbending universal law remains: nothing of value is ever achieved without stepping outside your comfort zone and doing the necessary work.

status symbols have replaced genuine maturity, thanks to marketing propaganda that triggers human insecurities with military precision. Over the past two decades, a systematic rebranding of fear as "wellness" or "astute financial strategy" has taken hold.

Nevertheless, a comfortable cage is still a cage. The widespread refusal to leave the nest isn't merely a byproduct of macroeconomic forces; it's a profound psychological rejection of the sacrifices required to become an adult, at the expense of personal accountability, social functioning, and self-worth.

Young adults sidestep adulthood because they dread what independence requires; a direct result of helicopter parenting that has produced an intrinsically risk-averse generation. Previous generations stepped out into an indifferent world with nothing but a mattress on the floor, or, in my case, a futon, a second-hand couch, and a strict, unyielding budget. It was understood that independence is built from the ground up, not imported ready-made from a luxury lifestyle blog. Today, there's an outright refusal to compromise on luxury.

If a young adult can't start at the top of the lifestyle ladder immediately, they choose to stay at home and project pseudo-success on their parents' dime.

Parents often convince themselves that letting a young adult child live at home is an act of love and protection. It's structural sabotage. Parents who let their young adult children linger in their childhood bedrooms, or "live in their basement," to avoid economic and life frictions aren't parenting; they're enabling them to live like greenhouse plants. True adult character is like timber; it requires the friction of the wind, heavy downpours, and the chill of frost to develop structural integrity. Parents who eliminate the struggle for survival aren't helping their children get ahead; they're

ensuring their children remain too fragile to ever stand on their own.

Young adults who rely on their parents for support while spending their income, assuming they have a job, on unnecessary luxury items and services, are like a car being towed behind a moving truck.

You might look like you're driving at highway speeds, and you can certainly enjoy the view through the windshield, but your foot isn't on the gas, and you aren't steering. The moment the hitch disconnects, as it inevitably will, you'll realize you have no idea how to operate the car, steer away from the ditch, or avoid road hazards. Becoming an independent adult can't be bought at a highend retailer; it's earned by navigating the obstacles on life's journey.

To the parents reading this who have young adults still living at home: trading your child's milestones for their excuses is a fundamental failure to raise an independent adult who contributes to society. For the 20-something reading this who is still living under their parents' roof, the truth remains unvarnished: as much as you like to think you're "strategizing" or that you simply "can't," you're hiding.

Sovereign adulthood isn't a hazard to be avoided; it's the arena where selfreliance, confidence, and, most of all, self-respect are cultivated. Muster up the grit and pride to own your life. Unplug from your parents' safety net, stop spending your money trying to "look rich"—you're only fooling yourself—and experience the exhilaration of standing entirely on your own two feet.

by Diana Gifford-Jones It's been a year since my father bid us adieu on the First of July as Canada Day fireworks lit up the Toronto harbour.

So I want to share a special column with you this week, a reflection on how I feel. There are so many thoughts that come to mind. But one word rises above all others, and that is gratitude. I am grateful for my father, yes. But it is also you, the readers of this column, that I wish to thank. I want you to know how much you all meant to my father, and now how much you mean to me.

My father had a passion for writing. He penned his first column in October, 1974, in which he wrote, "Let me show you how having too little or too much faith in the doctor can get you into trouble." And weekly thereafter, that's exactly what he did. I remember bundles of letters from readers that came weekly to our home.

That's what inspired him.

He loved being a doctor, but it was the connection with readers that had him utterly addicted to being a medical journalist.

What would he say now? He'd remind us that not every reader was a fan.

And he'd give us an update regarding his intended prayer at the Pearly Gates that St Peter would grant him admission – and own-

ership of all newspapers, such that he could publish what he really wanted to say!

But I am convinced that it was all your letters over many years, those in favour, but also those against his views, that bolstered his vitality. Now I am on the receiving end of the same dynamic. And I feel the inspiration. This time last year, so many of you wrote a note of condolence. I thank you very much, as it helped a great deal. I've enjoyed getting to know who is at the other end of the Gifford-Jones column.

Inasmuch as today's readers are advancing in age like my father, I am also thinking about those who have departed – those who traveled with my father through the 1950s and his early medical practice, the 1960s and 1970s during his pioneering days for women's health, the 1980s and his campaign for better pain management, and then the last decades of his life when he fought against big pharma's grip on the medical establishment.

You are missed.

While my father had a few choice words for the editors who fired him, I have nothing but gratitude for those that have kept me on!

I have thanks, too, for all the people in the natural health community who

provided my father with an enormous extended family, from the retailers coast to coast to the health-conscious consumers who continue to prove that Mother Nature is a healing force like no other.

My father was a Harvard-trained medical doctor and surgeon who did not like being told lies as the answers to challenging questions. This made his controversial stands on modern medicine well worth observing. Whereas I am better described as a connector of people and ideas. What often amazes me is how narrowminded people can be, readily jumping to conclusions on very little information.

If I have my father's luck and determination, there will be another 43 years ahead of me until I write my final column, like he did a year ago. I'm looking forward, and trust a good many of you are too.

Please keep your letters coming. And again, my deepest thanks.

by Jennifer Westendorp Kemptville District Hospital (KDH) is taking steps to reduce surgical wait times for the region. At the beginning of June 2026, KDH moved endoscopy procedures from its Operating Rooms to the hospital's Clinics.

Relocating endoscopy services allows KDH to better utilize hospital space and resources, creating additional Operating Room capacity and improving access to surgical procedures. This milestone reflects strong alignment and a shared commitment among regional partners to deliver care close to home.

"I'd like to acknowledge our surgical partners at The Ottawa Hospital for collaborating with us to bring this long-standing vision to fruition," said Tanya Deans, KDH's Manager of Clinical Programs. "This success story is the next step toward creating surgical capacity for patients."

"KDH is committed to its role as a regional hospital, and working strategically with our partners on innovative solutions to help alleviate health system pressures," said Frank Vassallo, KDH President and CEO. "Moving endoscopy services to our clinics will increase capacity in our Operating Rooms to better meet surgical demand."

Endoscopy procedures are being performed in KDH's ambulatory clinic space on Mondays, with plans to expand to other days of the week. Existing clinic services remain unchanged, delivered in a different room.

"Increasing surgical capacity is a priority for KDH and our regional partners," said Dr. Colin Sentongo, KDH Chief of Staff. "We have three modern Operating Rooms and an incredible team in our surgical care unit, so the stage is set to continue growing surgical programs."

Math inspires Creative Designs at Kemptville Public School visuals. To narrow down their selections, the class engaged the school community by hosting a vote to determine the top 12 designs. Selected favourites include: How do cows do math? With a cow-culator.

What is a math teacher’s favourite type of snake? A pi-thon.

What do you call a number that can’t sit still? A roamin’ numeral.

How does a mathematician plow a field?

With a pro-tractor.

Once the designs were finalized, the class partnered with teacher Brad Vaughan at North Grenville District High School (NGDHS).

Vaughan and his Grade 10 Technological Design class brought the concepts to life by printing the stickers and producing the t-shirts.

“It feels pretty good, because we all worked on this for a couple of months before we sent it off to NGDHS to get printed,” said student Eddy Craig. “It's really nice to see the physical

This year, students at Kemptville Public School (KPS) took on a creative project aimed at building math confidence and excitement across the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB). While preparing for EQAO testing, the Grade 6 class saw an opportunity to promote a positive math mindset within their school community. The result is a collection of stickers featuring laugh-out-loud math puns and a t-shirt design with a confidence

boosting message: U can do math Confidently, Daily, Successfully, Boldly!

“For the t-shirt, we searched up words that would help with math and then used those to spell out UCDSB,” explained student Cain Seabrook. “We didn't know if they would actually use it, but then they said they loved it!”

“I have found that students often have strong feelings about

learning math, both positive or otherwise, including students with anxieties about it or a sense of uncertainty,” said Grade 6 teacher Jordan McNalty. “To combat this in a small way, we brainstormed ideas for how we could promote positive math talk in our school.”

To kick off the project, students researched math jokes to incorporate into their designs and used the graphic design platform Canva to create eye-catching

stickers and t-shirt. To actually have it in your hands is so cool.”

“My sticker made it in the top 12, so that felt pretty good,” added Hendrix McCallion. “Mine is the Cow-culator one.”

Hoping to extend the impact beyond their school, the students approached organizers of the popular, board-wide UCDSB Math Gameshow. The virtual event brings classrooms together to tackle challenging math questions and is one of several innovative strategies that has contributed to improved EQAO performance across the board.

The students thought they could build on the shows excitement and help their fellow students feel good about math, promote positive learning mindsets, and build math confidence by offering their new merchandise as prizes in future shows. The UCDSB agreed, and the stickers and t-shirts will be featured as giveaways throughout the 2026–27 school year.

The project also caught the attention of Knowledgehook, the platform used to run the Math Gameshow. Impressed by the students’ creativity and initiative, representatives from the company plan to incorporate some of the designs into their own materials worldwide.

“I was so impressed with the engagement I saw during the entire process,” said McNalty.

“It was quite meaningful.

Students were excited to work on their designs and I was so impressed to see this sort of student commitment at such a pivotal moment in their educational career.”

Looking ahead, McNalty hopes to expand the initiative with next year’s class, continuing to spread confidence and enthusiasm for math through creativity and humour.

Reforest idle fields for the same cost as mowing them

If you’re tired of paying high gas and equipment costs to maintain idle fields, tree planting may be the answer. For the same price as maintaining an acre of fallow land, the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) can reforest that field so you can gain back all the time, money and effort you would have otherwise spent on it.

“At $0.40 a tree or less, it’s an incredibly economical way to protect your property,” said Ian Cochrane, RVCA’s forestry manager. “It’s about the same cost as mowing for the year, and it keeps your land working without having to do the work yourself.”

Thanks to generous funding partners and grants, the RVCA’s program offers native tree

seedlings for $0.15 each within the City of Ottawa and between $0.30 and $0.40 each across the rest of the Rideau and Mississippi watersheds.

Flat rates are available for larger projects.

These prices include customized tree planting plans that suit the landowner’s vision and needs, on-site technical advice, ordering and handling of trees, site preparation, tree planting, tending, and refills for five years.

Elizabethtown-Kitley farmer Tom Ronan said he was spending several weeks each year mowing his fallow fields with a brush hog – costing him time, fuel and equipment maintenance. He planted more than 4,000 trees to give himself a break while also leaving a legacy.

As a bonus, planting trees on unused fields can indirectly reduce costs by creating windbreaks, reducing soil erosion, improving drainage, providing natural cooling and filtering contaminants from local water sources.

Trees can also reduce the impacts of extreme weather while absorbing carbon to slow the rate of climate change.

RVCA’s forestry staff are now booking site visits for this summer and fall to prepare for tree planting in spring 2027.

Eligible Ottawa landowners must have at least 0.25 hectares of suitable land.

Landowners outside of Ottawa must have at least 0.5 hectares of suitable land for planting.

When nature answers back

by Rideau Waterway Land Trust Across Ontario, invasive plants such as Dogstrangling Vine (DSV), Phragmites, and Garlic Mustard continue to challenge land managers, conservation organizations, and private landowners alike. These species spread through landscapes, twining, smothering, and reshaping habitats until native wildflowers, grasses, and shrubs struggle to hold their ground. At Rideau Waterway Land Trust, our stewardship team spends countless hours each year working directly against these pressures. At James H. Fullard Nature Reserve, staff and volunteers painstakingly remove DSV annually while replanting native, pollinator-friendly species that help stitch diversity back into the soil. At Brenda Carter Nature Reserve, efforts focus on holding back dense stands of invasive Phragmites before they can push deeper into wetlands. And at Rock Dunder Nature Reserve, Garlic Mustard removal is a familiar springtime task, hand-pulled by the root each May before it can release seeds onto the forest floor. These efforts are slow, steady, and essential. Yet even as people work to restore balance, nature itself is beginning to offer some unexpected allies.

One of the most promising examples is the Dog-strangling Snout 16

(Hypena opulenta), a small nocturnal moth introduced through rigorous scientific evaluation as a potential biological control for Dog-strangling Vine. In its larval stage, this moth feeds almost exclusively on DSV leaves, gradually weakening the plant over time.

Native to Eurasia, it was studied for years under strict containment to ensure it would not shift its attention to native species such as Common Milkweed. Only after extensive testing was it approved for release in Canada, where populations have now been established and are slowly beginning to disperse.

Researchers continue to refine their understanding of how such species might integrate into Ontario’s ecosystems, not as an overnight solution, but as a slow, living counterweight.

Garlic Mustard, too, may have met its own natural adversaries. The root-mining weevil Ceutorhynchus scrobicollis, being observed in Ontario field trials since 2018, works beneath the soil, with its larvae burrowing into the root crown and sharply reducing overwintering survival and flowering.

Complementing this is the seed-feeding weevil Ceutorhynchus constrictus, cleared for release just last year, which attacks the plant’s reproductive stage by feeding on developing seeds and potentially reducing total

seed production by 60%.

Together, these beetles could alter the trajectory of forests where Garlic Mustard has disrupted spring wildflower communities and interfered with delicate mycorrhizal networks beneath the soil. Invasive Phragmites are also being studied for potential biological control using specialized stem-boring insects from its native range, though these efforts remain in early stages.

Conservation science has learned hard lessons from earlier eras of biological control, when introductions were made with far less understanding of ecological complexity. Today’s programs are built on long years of testing, containment, and an abundance of caution, guided by the recognition that even a well-intentioned introduction can ripple through ecosystems in unexpected ways.

Yet there is something incredibly hopeful about watching these new relationships emerge, a welcome reminder that ecosystems are not static battlegrounds but living systems capable of response and rebalancing.

If these carefully studied insects continue to prove successful, they will become valuable partners in restoration. Not replacements for stewardship on the ground, but companions to it. Nature, too, seeks to restore the balance.
