By Tom Graham A record 1,300 people attended the 13th annual North Grenville Sustainability Fair on Saturday at the North Grenville Municipal Centre. The free, family-friendly event featured a wide range of eco-minded vendors and community organizations offering something for everyone. A selection of vendors displayed ‘greening your home’ products and eastern Ontario’s largest display of electric vehicles.

While many vendors had participated in the Fair

before, there were many new vendors this year.

Organizers state that the show attracted many new people this year, as well as those returning to the Fair after its two-year hiatus due to COVID. Besides locals, many folks came from Ottawa and the surrounding area.

Organizers weren’t the only ones who felt upbeat and positive about the Fair this year. “Fantastic job, Sustainable North Grenville, on the return of your fair!”, said Mayor Nancy Peckford following

the event. “So many community booths, wonderful kids’ zone, lots of learning, delicious food, lively music, upcycled fashion and housewares, free poems for your pocket, electric vehicles and some good laughter too. Mostly everyone wearing masks which was awesome to see. Thank you to all of the volunteers for making it happen once again, and everyone who came out!”

A survey of participating vendors included comments such as ‘Social event of the year.’, ‘Incred-

ible turnout’, ‘Great way to make new contacts’, ‘Great volunteers - nice people’.

The Fair is organized and run by a group of concerned citizens who are passionate about social and environmental issues in the community. Plans are already underway for next year’s Fair. To find out more, or learn how you can get involved, visit www.SustainableNorthGrenville.ca.

Kemptville District Hospital receives official designation as a CT Site

“Currently our patients requiring CT have to be transported to Ottawa or

Winchester, causing delays in getting these potentially life-saving diagnostic tests,” said KDH’s CEO, Frank J. Vassallo. “We recognized some time ago that we need to be able to offer CT in our ER and are thrilled to see this initiative moving forward with our official designation as a CT Site.”

He next expressed thanks to the Municipality of North Grenville for providing funding support for the CT Scan initiative in the amount of $900,000. In addition, he thanked the KDH Auxiliary for its generous contribution of $60,000 which will be used to support the CT scan initiative.

Next steps to move the CT Scan initiative forward include a fundraising campaign by the KDH Foundation and the construction of an addition on the side of the Hospital to house the CT technology.

“We will keep the community informed as we continue to move this vital initiative forward,” concluded KDH’s CEO, Frank J. Vassallo.

Frank added that having CT scanning capabilities will be a “game changer” for KDH as it will also enable the Hospital to bring in new medical and surgical programs requiring CT. Steve Clark, MPP for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes, made the announcement at KDH, with North Grenville Mayor Nancy Peckford in attendance. “After decades of inaction and underinvestment by previous governments, the people of Kemptville have had to make do with hospitals that did not have the diagnostic tools they need to provide the level of care that our growing community needs,” MPP Clark said. “Our government is fixing this problem by helping Kemptville District Hospital secure its first CT Scanner so that all Ontarians can access the world-class care they need right here in Kemptville.”

Lilac jelly???

By Marguerite Boyer A few weeks ago, I posted on NGTimes facebook a drawing I did of lilacs and included it in my daily morning weather reports which most often never are quite accurate. I got quite a few responses, but the one that intrigued me the most was from Jeremy Parker, an instructor at Bhodi Tree. He said he could not wait to make his yearly lilac jelly. Lilac jelly????

I grew up on a farm, and we made all kinds of jams and jellies. I thought I knew it all. We had lilac trees, and every spring we looked forward to the scent and filling the house with the aroma, but never in my wildest dreams did I ever think you could make jelly with the petals. Until I met Jeremy. He invited me for a test taste and I was pleasantly surprised by my sample. Jeremy also makes his own pectin, adding sugar after the flowers have been boiled. And Voilà! I am not sure if it was his home-made pectin that made it so delicious, or just the lilacs themselves.

Ontario working for workers by investing in training for good jobs in Eastern Ontario Province is investing nearly $1 million to help workers earn bigger paycheques and advance their careers Steve Clark, MPP for Leeds—Grenville—Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes, announced that our government is investing $921,908 in apprenticeship training to be offered by the Upper Canada District School Board in partnership with Kemptville Campus. This investment will offer workers in Kemptville and the surrounding area the training they need to pursue in-demand and wellpaying jobs in our community.

“Our government is working for workers by investing nearly $1 million in highquality training for skills trades here in Kemptville, so that young people don’t need to travel to the big city to learn and train,” said MPP Clark.

“With this announcement, we are investing in our students, our rural economy, and a bright future for skilled trades in Eastern Ontario.” This funding is in response to two funding applications and will allow UCDSB in partnership with the Kemptville Campus to focus on a suite of program and service offerings that will address the many barriers associated with Red Seal Apprenticeship completion.

Building on the success of the Level 1 Commercial Vehicle

and Equipment (CVEA) Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program delivered in 2021, the intent is to deliver another intake in 2022 along with the following opportunities: 1. A Pre-Apprenticeship Program for Adult Learners: The CVEA Level One Pre-Apprenticeship program will target clients with some knowledge of and experience in the Motive Trades (Truck and Coach, Heavy Equipment and Agricultural Equipment) who are seeking Apprenticeship Certification, as well as new entrants seeking second career opportunities, and underrepresented groups (Women, Indigenous Peoples, Persons with Disabilities, Racialized Groups, Youth, lower wage earners) who are seeking a gateway to dependable employment in high-demand sectors. This “Try a Trade” Pre-Apprenticeship initiative will have adult students participating in CVEA in-class training and 12 weeks of work placement across all three sectors.

2. One-on-one student support throughout the Apprenticeship pathway: TR Leger (UCDSB) will provide participants in all available programs with wrap-around supports – employment skills, mentorship, exam preparation, Literacy & Basic Skills (LBS) and training specific

to experiential learning and apprenticeship training within the Motive Trades. The goal is for participants to overcome barriers, successfully complete the CVEA learning program and continue their apprenticeship pathway with local industry partners and employers.

Apprenticeship Awareness Learning opportunities (Micro-Credential Training for Adult Learners): Adults wishing to explore employment in the motive vehicle trades will have the option of participating in a 6 week or a 12 week micro-credential program. These programs will provide an opportunity for Adult Learners to increase their knowledge and skills in preparation for long-term employment in the motive trades sector. The 12 week program offers the added benefit of experiential work placement within the industry.

4. Upskilling for those seeking entry-level positions and for those in the industry seeking just-in-time, fast-track learning modules (Micro-Credential Certification): The Micro-Credential Certification Program is designed to support the same learner groups as the CVEA apprenticeship in a customized format.

This investment builds on the government’s ongoing efforts to attract, support and protect workers, making Ontario the top place in the world to work, live and raise a family. It follows legislation Minister McNaughton recently passed that provides foundational rights for digital platform workers, requirements for employers to disclose their electronic monitoring of employees and for businesses in high-risk settings to have Naloxone kits on hand, and several red tape reductions to encourage outof-province workers to help fill the generational labour shortage.

May 1, 2022, marks First Responders Day – a province-wide initiative to recognize the dedication and crucial work of our first responders.

First Responders Day invites all Ontarians to recognize workers on the front line, including police officers, firefighters, military personnel, paramedics, dispatchers, nurses, doctors and emergency personnel.

and the community of North Grenville, I want to thank each and every one of our first responders for their work,” said Mayor Nancy Peckford.

“First responders put their lives on the line every day to protect us and have gone above and beyond to serve our community in so many ways, particularly during the pandemic,” added Mayor Peckford. “We know many front line health

of volunteer firefighters who serve collectively with all other first responders.

“We are so fortunate and extremely grateful to have such dedicated emergency responders, including our own volunteer fire service in North Grenville,” said Councillor Kristin Strackerjan and Emergency and Protective Services Liaison.

North Grenville celebrates National Volunteer Week

by Brandon Mayer Most people try to give what they can when it comes to charitable organizations, but there is perhaps no greater contribution than donating one’s time. That is the idea behind National Volunteer Week, which the Municipality celebrated along with countless other locales last week, from April 24 – 30. Even Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made mention of the occasion in a statement, saying “Volunteers are the lifeblood of communities and organizations across the country.

Every year, approximately 24 million Canadians volunteer their time, energy, and experiences to improve the lives of others from coast to coast to coast. During National Volunteer Week, we celebrate Canada’s volunteers and thank them for devoting their time.” What makes a volunteer tick?

That question was asked of three local volunteers, who each provided unique insights on the noble work of volunteering.

Wendy Embleton is the President of the Kemptville District Community Association (KDCA), an organization which she helped to found in 2018.

“We really didn’t know what the purpose of the KDCA was going to be at the inception,” Wendy said.

Now the organization has taken on the responsibility of Kemptville’s Canada Day celebrations, among other activities. The last two years of pandemic life were somewhat trickier for the KDCA as much of the community engagement needed to be virtual, but those who run the organization have done great at keeping their heads up. In Wendy’s view, volunteering needs to be fun and enjoyable for the volunteer. “It shouldn’t be another job,” she said. “You should

be doing something where you’re really enjoying it as well, and if that’s not the case, find something else to do.” She also stressed that there are a great many different duties that volunteers can perform, so there is always something available for everyone. “Don’t get burnt out,” she said. “There is always a place for you in this town.”

Mary-Anne Leang is another local volunteer who lends her time to various organizations, including the local chapter of the Girl Guides. She spoke of the idea of volunteering as one way to lend one’s “time, talent, or treasure” in order to help other people and make life more affordable and enjoyable for others.

“For me, treasure is not something I’m able to help with, but definitely my time and talent are,” Mary-Anne said. “Seeing the people at the activities you volunteer for, seeing them enjoy it and seeing the community come together is important.” She also spoke of the importance of getting children involved in volunteer activities at a young age so that they can see the results of their hard work and helping out firsthand. Mary-Anne’s own teenage daughter has logged close to 300 volunteer hours with her school, far above the mandatory 40 hours to graduate high school. “I think everyone can make a difference,” Mary-Anne added. “Once you get started, you kind of get hooked on what a difference you can make.”

Neil Whyte has volunteered with the Oxford Mills Community Association (OMCA) for several years.

“Everyone says that volunteering is a very positive, rewarding experience, and it truly is,” said Neil. “And it’s doubly rewarding if you understand why you’re doing it.” Neil’s inspiration for volunteering comes from

a simple question: “What kind of community do I want to live in?” He told the Times that people appreciate volunteers, giving the example of receiving positive comments when he is watering the bridge planters in Oxford Mills. The OMCA is always seeking new volunteers to help out with its activities, such as Canada Day celebrations. Neil mentioned that the demand for local volunteers in general is very high this year because of large events such as the Kemptville Live Music Festival and the International Plowing Match. Neil is hopeful that volunteers will continue to keep smaller organizations in mind as well. “We want every event that runs in the area to be successful,” he said.

Mayor Peckford was honoured to formally welcome the recent Ukrainian arrivals who are now living in the Municipality of North Grenville.

as was the aim of my quest mentioned in my last article.

The bitter wind didn't make the watching of the Ospreys too warm or exciting, as the two I had watched last week seemed to be hunkered down in their nest to keep warm!

The Red Winged Blackbirds in the nearby reeds weren't about to sit, sing and display their beautiful red wings for me either, so I travelled onwards to try and seek-out some Turkey Vultures, whilst heading back towards home.

I deviated a little bit south of where I was, before heading due east again in my quest for them and some brief patches of sunshine. Fortunately for me, I found both and was able to stop my car and get some shots of a Turkey Vulture as it traversed the fields and hedgerows in search of some carrion on which it feeds, not being a hunter of live food.

Feeling pretty pleased with myself that I had achieved what I had set out to do, I was very pleasantly surprised and excited when, on arriving back home, I spotted a different bird feeding on the ground but away from my feeders. Its Woodpecker shape puzzled me for

a few seconds when its brown back colouring, spotting and the distinctive red V-necked marking gave it away as a Northern Flicker, --- yes the first "Flicker" of Spring! My camera clicked feverishly as it continuously kept moving about not allowing me a really good shot of it. I did get some in the very few minutes that it remained in the garden before flying off to the nextdoor neighbour's, giving out its distinctive call as it went.

My excitement was not just confined to seeing only this bird on that day, because I saw another newly returned one, a White Throated Sparrow, with its characteristic white throated bib and its bright yellow markings just above its eyes and below its black and white striped head, a real treat to see. Of course, the other ground feeding birds were in evidence and couldn't be and weren't ignored, as they too added to my joy of being able to watch them, as I hope you do to.

I was able to see the Ospreys once again, but also wanted to get some pictures of Turkey Vultures in flight too, having failed to get some,

UCDSB receives funding for Trades & Apprenticeship Training at Kemptville Campus

ville Campus.

With a combined total of $981,908 in funding, the UCDSB TR Leger School, in partnership with Kemptville Campus, will provide skills development opportunities at multiple career path entry points for individuals interested in the power motive trades.

Adult learners who are new to the power motive trades sectors (Truck and Coach, Heavy Equipment

and Agricultural Equipment) and looking to explore employment in the industry will have the opportunity to enroll in a six-week or a 12-week micro-credential program.

These programs will allow adult learners to increase their knowledge and skills in preparation for long-term employment in these sectors, with the added benefit of an experiential work placement within the industry.

For adult learners with some knowledge and experience in the power motive trades who are looking for apprenticeship certification, or individuals looking for second career opportunities, a Pre-Apprenticeship Program will now be offered. This program allows individuals to “try a trade” by diving into the Level 1 Commercial Vehicle and Equipment Apprenticeship (CVEA) in-class training and completing 12 weeks of work placements across the three sectors.

For those ready to take on full apprenticeship training, TR Leger through Kemptville Campus will now be able to

offer Level 1 CVEA Training for Truck and Coach Technician, Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, and Agricultural Equipment Technician to both adults and youth.

The TR Leger School started offering Level 1 CVEA training in 2021 to senior high school students and young adults through the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program. The expansion of this program offering is a direct result of its previous success.

“It’s no secret that skilled tradespeople are in high demand. These programs that we have developed with our community and industry partners will not only help address the labour shortage in the trades, but help unemployed or under-employed people get experience in the trades that could ultimately lead them to well-paying jobs,” says UCDSB Chair John McAllister. “The UCDSB is very appreciative of this investment in the youth and job seekers of Eastern Ontario.”

“Our government is working for workers by investing

in high-quality training for skills trades here in Kemptville, so that young people don’t need to travel to the big city to learn and train,” said MPP Clark. “With this announcement, we are investing in our students, our rural economy, and a bright future for skilled trades in Eastern Ontario.”

These new programs will offer upskilling for those seeking entry-level positions and for those in the industry seeking just-in-time, fasttrack learning modules. Students will receive one-on-one support to develop employment skills, mentorship, exam preparation, Literacy & Basic Skills (LBS) training, and training specific to experiential learning and apprenticeship training within the power motive trades. The goal is for participants to overcome barriers, successfully complete the CVEA learning program and continue their apprenticeship pathway with local industry partners and employers.

“Kemptville Campus has a long history of training

youth from rural Eastern Ontario and we are pleased to have the opportunity to continue this role with the award of trades training licenses in Truck & Coach, Heavy Equipment, and Agricultural Equipment,” says Karen Cooper, Chair of the Board, Kemptville Campus Education and Community Centre.

“As stewards of the former Kemptville College, we are thrilled to work with our four school board partners to provide training opportunities for youth and build the foundation of a thriving economy and rural community.”

Nous sommes convaincus que les élèves méritent de poursuivre leur apprentissage en personne, dans des locaux modernes qui sont reliés à Internet, accessibles et dotés de très bons systèmes de ventilation. We also honour the many families and friends who have been deeply affected by these tragedies.

Consequently, the Municipality of North Grenville’s flags will be flown at half-

It is a day where, collectively, we renew our commitment to improving health and safety in workplaces throughout the country, and to preventing further injuries, illnesses and deaths.

The pandemic, in particular, has exacerbated our health-care system and has taken a tremendous toll on the health and well-being of front-line health-care workers, from burnout to PTSD and more.

The one-sided coin

That describes spring driving on most roads except the most meticulously caredfor county roads – and not just this spring, but every spring since I began driving over 11 years ago. Complaints I have heard from conversations with area residents, as well as social media users, have criticized local governments particularly harshly for the condition of the roads this season. “If my vehicle has to be road-worthy, then the roads should have to be vehicle-worthy!” is one of the more common arguments I have read and heard. Others have complained about the relatively high taxes we pay when one considers how awful some of the roads are.

There is no denying that many local backroads are practically impassable. Driving on some will make your

car quite literally vibrate, and don’t even think it’s just a matter of avoiding the potholes because there is no smooth path to be found. The issue is that potholes are not new, and asking local governments to fix them instantly without hiking taxes is about as fair as a one-sided coin.

From research I have done, it seems that the average price for overhauling a potholeladen road is about $60,000 per kilometre (this would be essentially “re-doing” the road with a load of fresh gravel and maintenance).

To pave a bad road, the cost would be 10-fold, at about $600,000 per kilometre. Of course, these figures are averages that depend on many factors. The cost may seem like peanuts to area ratepayers, but municipalities are not wealthy. Tax revenue in North Dundas is projected to be just over $7.2 million this year.

In September, ahead of the federal election, I wrote about “the politics of who sucks less,” referring to the fact that there seem to be no good political candidates anymore, leaving us with no choice but to vote for the one who will do the least harm. This isn’t because, through some quirk of statistics, only jerks run for office. It’s because fighting, arguing, and slander have become the heart of politics in Ontario, in Canada, and I would guess in most jurisMay 4, 2022

dictions around the world.

We parents wouldn’t let our kids spend every minute of every day yelling and screaming at each other, calling names, and spewing hate. Yet as a society, we don’t just allow our politicians to act in this very same way – we expect it. This is how democracies have worked for centuries.

I am not proposing that we change the very essence of democracy. Arguing and disagreeing is, after all, how the views of millions of constituents are able to be represented by just a few hundred individuals.

What doesn’t make sense is disagreeing for the sake of disagreeing.

2022 is just over $16.5 million. This means that in North Dundas, depending upon the width and condition of the roads, the Township could spend all of its annual tax revenue paving just 12km of road, or overhauling 120km of gravel roads. In North Grenville, these numbers would be 27.5km and 275km of road, respectively. Bearing in mind that this would eat away the entire tax revenue fund, and leave no money for municipal services, it is easy to accept why local politicians don’t simply “fix” the roads – it turns out roads are expensive.

As we all know, municipal crews make their rounds and fill potholes as quickly as they can this time of year, but there is a limited number of staff for a very big job. Why not hire more staff, right? The problem is, these “potholefilling staff” would likely not be needed after the job was done, and in today’s job

market, hiring a permanent employee is tough, let alone a temporary employee for just a couple of months. As much as we like to focus on the negative, we also have to acknowledge bad sideroads that have been paved in the past couple of years, and that re-doing a few roads each year is what the budget allows. When it snows, we thank plow operators. When it’s slippery, we tell one another to take our time as crews are working as fast as they can. When a water main breaks, we understand there is work to be done, and patience is required. When we hit a pothole, we simply hate it. It seems that when it comes to backroad driving, we need to learn to adjust our routes when possible, drive extra slow, and know that crews are on the job and need our patience and understanding.

That is the other side of the coin.

If I had the notoriety necessary to get every party leader for the upcoming provincial election into one room, and I was only afforded one question each, I would ask every leader the same question. Forget about asking how they are going to fix healthcare, or what their education policies are going to look like, or how much infrastructure spending they will commit to. There are dozens of other reporters who will ask those questions until the cows come home.

My one question to every leader would be “Can you tell me one part of each opposing party’s platform

that you actually like and agree with?” Of course, most would not answer, and would go straight back to slamming their opponents. It’s not good politics to praise one’s opponent.

But any candidate who actually gave an answer to the question would have my vote. That would be a candidate working for a better Ontario, instead of just a better paycheque.

While I’m not naïve enough to think that it will ever happen, I will always be left wondering if when it comes to politics, candidates should take one day a year to just hug it out.

The long and winding road

by David Shanahan You know that saying: “Travel broadens the mind”? I’ve been thinking about that a lot over the last couple of weeks, partly because by the time you read this I will have started a long stay in Ireland, so travel is on my mind. Yes, after all the lockdowns and restrictions, travel is once again relatively easy, with very few requirements beyond having a vaccination certificate. You still need a special form, the ArriveCan, in order to reenter Canada, but that is not a big deal. No more need for tests before youleave for the airport, no more collection of paperwork to prove you’re healthy.

You still have to wear a mask in the airport and on the plane, but I find many people are quite happy about that, and it makes them feel safer when they travel for hours in a plane.

in future, much as they’ve been doing in places like Japan for generations. Fair enough, I suppose.

But there’s something else that I’ve been pondering about this broadening the mind aspect of travel.

In the past, I just thought it meant that you learned something about other countries and cultures, and that this was a nice and painless form of education in many ways. But now I think: what’s the opposite of a broad mind? And the answer is, naturally, a narrow mind. A light went on in my fevered brain. That’s what it means: travel can cure you of having a narrow mind, being narrowminded.

Exposure to other cultures, people of other languages, traditions, religions, people of other colours. It is one thing to be see people of various ethnicities and colours in your neighbourhood, or cities and towns. After all, you’re still in the majority, because the majority of them are Canadians, no

matter what differences there may appear to be with you. But to visit another country where you are in the minority, where, perhaps, you don’t speak the language, understand the customs, know which side of the road to drive on, being uncomfortable about not knowing what is polite behaviour or the right way to use restaurants and facilities, is a very different situation.

You have a choice, and far too often North Americans (ok, Americans more than Canadians) want to stay in their comfort zone when in a foreign land.

Instead of trying the local food, they demand McDonald’s. They complain about accommodations not being of the same style or comfort as those at home perhaps. To be honest, there are some tourists who simply judge everything they see as being “not as good as at home”. These are not welcome guests in any country. In fact, it’s like they never really visited at all.

Yes, other countries, other cultures are different, and sometimes strange and leave you feeling ill at ease. But there’s a lesson to be learned there. What makes you uncomfortable?

Difference, uncertainty, foreign things. And those differences can create antagonism, suspicion, unease. And when people are uneasy about something different, it can lead to many forms of racism, bigotry, intolerance, and nativism. But for most, it has the opposite effect.

Travel to other cultures, meeting other people with different cultures and traditions, can open your eyes to so many things, good things. You learn that, for all the differences, we are all people, all humans with the same concerns, taking joy in the same things, having the same desires and loves (and hates too, sadly).

It is no coincidence that the past two years of lockdowns, restricted travel, even within our own province and nation,

has also seen the growth of conspiracy theories, angry protests, attacks on minorities, immigrants, women, and other forms of violent reactions against others, whoever the “others” may be. Fears have surfaced, exacerbated by wild tirades on social media platforms, even within traditional political parties. Society has become increasingly narrow, suspicious, intolerant, and angry.

We should be so grateful that the situation is opening up opportunities for getting out of our narrow circles and into the outside world again, whether it’s within Ontario, Canada, North America, or around the world. We have the chance of being moved by beautiful scenery, eating delicious foods, hearing different accents and languages, talking to people who have a completely different experience of life than we do. Travel broadens the mind, but it doesn’t have to be literal travel either. You can travel via films, tv shows, docu-

Dear Editor, Thank you for commenting on Victor Lachance's article in the April 20th, 2022 edition of the North Grenville Times. After I read "A Theatre Critic's Review", I felt I would not like to join CAPP at all. I do have to point out that in your Editorial, you said one speaker pointed out that it may not be very good agricultural land, anyway.

The speaker said that it was only the south part of the land that was stony, it still can be farmed.

Back to Mr. Lachance's article where he was questioning the timing of this meeting that was held. In my previous work experience, whenever anything is being given away for free, be it land, building or money, the receiver is always asked for a plan on how they will be using this freebie. If you don't produce the plan in a timely manner, the freebie is usually given to someone else. There is nothing wrong with the Municipality being prepared, mainly because no

one knows when this event will take place, whether it will be for the whole parcel of land or only a portion.

On to another matter, GARBAGE. I pitched-In to pick up garbage on our road.

In 1.6 kilometres, I collected 13 bags of garbage, 2 full boxes of recyclables, close to 200 beer cans and beer bottles (very disturbing, also there were a lot of empty cannabis containers), 2 big jugs of used cooking oil, someone's partially filled black garbage bag, a partially full bottle of clothes softener, a boot (thank goodness nothing was attached), large pieces of styrofoam and a large sheet of plastic bubble wrap. Another disturbing find was the large amount of cigarette butts that had burned out in the grass. - a fire waiting to happen. On my wish list, people who smoke, please dispose of your cigarette butts responsibly. This is the garbage that I could reach, some is floating in the water in our wetlands. Our wetlands are protected, mainly because

there are Blanding's Turtles living there. These turtles are on the endangered list and it seems that the garbage throwers are intent on destroying their habitat.

Please, North Grenville Council, do not approve any more fast food joints. We have enough! The bulk of the garbage was fast food containers, Tim Horton's, MacDonalds, Starbucks, Wendys, Dominos Pizza, New York Fries, Fat Les's and fast food containers from the Independent Store.

I know these places have no control over the people who throw the garbage out.

I know the garbage throwers do not qualify to be part of the species Homo Sapi-

ens, sapiens meaning wise, knowledgeable. I know these individuals are selfish and live in a bubble. Is this what they call freedom, to do what they want? To not be socially responsible? After all, we are social animals. I'm sorry to burst their bubble, but everything they do affects someone or something and the very thing that keeps them alive, the Planet. Just a little respect can go a long way. Please take your garbage home and dispose of it properly.

That’s it: travel broadens the mind, fills it with new thoughts and visions, opens it to new ideas and wider vistas. Then, later, at home and in down times, those memories come back and give us some perspective on our routine daily lives. We remember that there is a wider world out there, beyond our narrow and restricted vision. So, pardon me, I’m off to make some memories for a few weeks....

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, Please pass on my thanks to Harvey Powell, one of your NGT readers who kindly suggested a solution, in the form of a silhouette, to cure the antics of my "Window Knocking" Robin. I have since searched the internet and there are a few artistic places that supply such silhouettes for any other readers experiencing similar problems with the birds, whatever kind they may be. Our particular Robin has decided to give us a rest for now, so my need is not quite so urgent. Ontario Building New School in Kemptville Province supports the creation of new student and child care spaces at École élémentaire et secondaire catholique Notre-Dame The Ontario government is investing $14.9 million in the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est for a new École élémentaire et secondaire catholique NotreDame, also known as Académie catholique Notre-Dame, to help working families in Kemptville. This investment, announced by Steve Clark, MPP for Leeds—Grenville— Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes, will support the creation of 417 student spaces and 39 licensed child care spaces as part of the Ford Government’s commitment to building state-of-the-art schools for Ontario youth.

The project is part of a province wide investment of nearly $500 million to support new school and childcare spaces that were recently announced by Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education. The overall investment will support the creation of 37 school related projects which include 23 child care centres.

This funding will add nearly 15,700 new student spaces and 1,502 licensed childcare spaces at schools across Ontario.

“We are building new schools, building more affordable childcare spaces, and building hope and opportunity for Ontario students as they learn in more normal and safer classrooms,” said Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education.

“We believe that students deserve to learn in-person in state-of-the-art facilities that are internet connected, accessible, with modern ventilation systems, which is why our government is delivering a major investment that accelerates construction to get it done for parents, students, and communities.”

The investment is part of the Ontario government’s commitment to provide $14 billion to support school construction over ten years. Since 2018, the government has approved nearly 200 new projects and there are currently more than 300 childcare and education building-related projects in development, with more than 100 actively under construction.

-2 new childcare rooms.

By cutting red tape and introducing the Rapid Build pilot project to expedite procurement and construction processes to build better schools faster, we’re ensuring that students reap the benefits of stateof-the-art learning facilities sooner and have access to education in a safe and healthy environment,” said Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure. “These investments are just one of the ways we’re building critical infrastructure – such as schools, hospitals, long-term care homes and public transit – that Ontarians rely on with a budget over $148 billion over the next decade.”

eating the moon. Of course, it always worked. At other times, the moon would turn a copper or burnt orange colour. This variation from one eclipse to another depends on the composition of our atmosphere. The coloured lunar surface is the result of sunlight refracting or passing through our atmosphere, much like seeing a red sunset.

Although eclipses were terrifying events to various cultures, Christopher Columbus used a prediction from an almanac to save his shipwrecked crew from starvation. Months before the 1504 total eclipse, his crew was stranded off the coast of Jamaica. They were welcomed by the Arawak Indians and given food and shelter. Over time, half the crew mutinied and began stealing and murdering some of the friendly natives. Things became dire as the chief held back food, resulting in starvation. Columbus knew of the predicted eclipse that would occur in a few days and used it to his advantage. He fooled the chief into believing he had great powers to cause the moon to turn a fearful tinge of blood red.

On the night of February 29, the moon rose while entering earth’s shadow. This was of great concern to the villagers and they provided food to the crew once again.

Columbus waited in his tent until the right moment as per the prediction. A few minutes before the end of totality, he announced that his gods had pardoned them. As he uttered these words, the moon began to pull out of the shadow and appear normal once again. A rescue mission found Columbus and his crew at the end of June of that year.

We do not witness an eclipse every month because the moon has a slight incline of its axis as it orbits our planet. On a few special mo-

ments throughout the year, the sun, earth and moon line up.

Some events are total but others lineups result in the moon clipping the earth’s shadow.

This is a partial eclipse and also occurs during a solar eclipse.

Although not necessary, try to head out of city limits and away from light sources for some great digital photography. Although a cell phone will record the eclipse, a DSLR camera on a tripod will be needed to capture the lovely Milky Way to the left of the eclipsed and much darker moon. Use a cable release to open the camera shutter for a few seconds during totality. Set the camera on manual and experiment with exposure times. Remember, pixels are free.

The eastern and most of the central portion of North America will witness the entire eclipse from start to finish. For mountain and western time zones, the eclipse will be underway as the moon rises.

Enjoy this must-see event if at all possible. The next total lunar eclipse will occur on November 8 of this year and favour the west coast.

Masking Requirements continue in Select indoor settings Access to Evusheld becomes another tool to manage COVID-19 As Ontario continues to effectively manage the sixth wave of COVID-19, the Chief Medical Officer of Health is maintaining existing provincial masking requirements in select higher-risk indoor settings until June 11, 2022.

“To protect our progress in managing this latest wave, I am maintaining masking requirements in specific public settings where individuals who are, or may be, at increased risk of severe outcomes, are in close contact for extended periods of time,” said Dr. Kieran Moore, Chief Medical Officer of Health. “Continuing to follow masking requirements and keeping up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations are the best ways we can prevent transmission and protect our friends, families, and our communities.”

Provincial masking requirements which were set to expire on April 27, 2022 are being extended in current settings until 12:00 a.m. on June 11, 2022, including:

-public transit; - health care settings (e.g., hospitals, doctors’offices, clinics that provide health care services, laboratories, specimen collection centres, and home and community care); - long-term care homes; - retirement homes; and - shelters and other congregate care settings that provide care and services to medically and socially vulnerable individuals.

A complete list of settings where masking requirements continue to apply is available online.

The Chief Medical Officer of Health will also maintain the CMOH Directives currently in effect until June 11, 2022, after which the ministry will issue guidance on personal protective equipment recommendations for infection prevention and control in health care settings.

Given the province’ high vaccination rates, expansion of booster doses, as well as the arrival of antivirals, Ontario has the tools necessary to manage

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS The provincial government needs to build a new prison in Eastern Ontario.

The proposed Kemptville prison is a done deal.

The prison will be good for the local economy.

The prison will bring “500 new jobs” to the community The prison won’t cost the taxpayer anything.

(Note that just building and operating the prison will cost $500,000 over 10 years. It will cost $25M/year to house prisoners in a prison that would not need to be built if the Province simply reformed the bail/remand system.)

The prison will not result in any additional demands on our local hospital.

This new prison will actually rehabilitate rather than cage people.

(Note that the Province has said this for other prisons in the past, but this does not happen once the prison is built.)

Expanding Ontario’ Tools to Manage COVID-19 and Stay Open While the Province adapts to managing and living with COVID-19, the Ontario government is using every tool available to protect hospital capacity and ensure Ontario can stay open. This includes continuing masking in highrisk settings, expanding eligibility for fourth doses of the COVID-19 vaccine and expanding access to antiviral treatments such as Paxlovid.

To further expand the tools available to protect Ontarians and reduce hospital visits, the Province will start to receive supplies of Evusheld, an antibody treatment for immunocompromised individuals who are not positive for COVID-19 at the time of administration.

Following two single-dose injections, the treatment provides protection from COVID-19 for six months.

Based on advice from the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health (CADTH), Evusheld will be available to individuals with the highestrisk of a severe outcome from COVID-19 in the coming weeks, including: - solid organ transplant recipients; - stem cell transplant recipients; - CAR-T therapy recipients; and - other hematologic cancer patients undergoing treatment.

“Thanks to the Province, high vaccination rates as well as an increase in antiviral treatment availability and eligibility, we have been able to cautiously and gradually reopen Ontario,” said Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “Vaccination remains our best protection against COVID-19, and I strongly recommend that everyone stays up to date with their vaccinations by receiving the dose you are eligible for as soon as you can. THE EVIDENCE AND THE FACTS

Roughly 70% of prisoners in Ontario prisons are pre-trial or pre-sentence, simply awaiting their day in court. Provincial officials admit that thousands of these prisoners could safely be on bail, and have promised to reform the bail system for years. So why spend hundreds of millions of dollars on more prison spaces?

A simple online search will reveal how the Ford government has backtracked on many other plans. This is a political decision which can be reversed or put on hold until the Province releases the information it promised.

There will be no sustainable jobs for North Grenville. The government has acknowledged this and has not provided any evidence of economic benefits. Multiple studies show that building prisons do not boost small-town economies.

Just about anything would be better than a prison for the local economy.

The “500 new jobs” claim was incorrect. Mayor Peckford corrected her error in the June 22, 2021 Council meeting.

According to the Province, existing corrections staff will fill most of the jobs and will commute to Kemptville.

All prison towns are on the hook for policing costs. For example, Penetanguishene is projected to pay $373,952 in 2022. Taxpayers will also pay for water supply and wastewater servicing and maintenance, as in the case of Merrickville’s federally built water treatment facility. There are bound to be drug trafficking enforcement costs increasing the OPP costs for Kemptville. All this for a prison no one asked for and which is not needed: the government has acknowledged that reframing the bail/remand system would eliminate the need for this prison.

The former Burritt’s Rapids prison put a burden on the KDH. Media reports have shown how prisons put burdens on local hospitals; so the prison will put increased pressure on KDH.

The Beth Donovan Hospice will host a new support group later this month for women between the ages of 35 and 55 who have recently received a new life-limiting diagnosis. The support group, called the Circle of Resilience group, will have its first session on Tuesday, May 24 from 3:30-4:30pm at the Kemptville Public Library, with six sessions to follow on consecutive weeks. The sessions will be facilitated by the Hospice’s own Certified Counsellor, Megan Dillenbeck. The purpose of the group will be to provide a safe place to express challenges being faced, whether they be physical, mental, or emotional in nature. The group will strive to provide encouragement, connection, and support to participants.

The Hospice is emphasizing that for anyone who meets the criteria for the support group, finding a support group is a way to interact with others who have been through similar experiences. Support groups provide opportunities to talk about and work through challenges with others who understand, because they have been there.

An informational handout about the support group reads, in part, “Navigating the physical and emotional toll of a new life limiting diagnosis can be disorienting and overwhelming. Feelings of intense sadness, fear, and a sense of loss are a normal part of the process. In a new diagnosis support group, members can

feel more comfortable sharing feelings and experiences that may be too difficult or too awkward to share with their family and friends. Being part of a group often creates a sense of belonging that helps each person feel more understood and less alone. You can also discuss practical information in a support group.

This may include what to expect during treatment, how to manage specific side effects, how to find support services, and how to communicate with healthcare providers and family members.”

This new support group is just one on a growing list of services provided by the Beth Donovan Hospice, with a bereavement walking group also set to begin later this month.

The Hospice also provides a variety of other services, such as the Day Hospice Program, in-home visits, education, and networking opportunities.

Those who meet the criteria for the Circle of Resilience New Diagnosis Support Group and are interested in joining should be aware that space is limited, and that registration is required. Merrickville Community Yard Sale History 1 3. Life in Wolford in 1818 returns this weekend

by Brandon Mayer One popular annual event in Merrickville will return this weekend, joining the growing list of local activities that are seeing an end to long pandemic hiatuses. The Merrickville Community Yard Sale will occur this Saturday, May 7. The event was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19, and the organizers are happy that it will return.

“Are you ready for Merrickville's annual villagewide yard sale?” the event’s description on social media reads. “Bring the family to town this weekend (May 7th & 8th) and explore the streets of heritage homes as villagers across town set up shop to offer you their odds and ends, collectibles and treasures.

Around each corner is a unique discovery waiting to be made, with each vendor another diamond in the rough waiting to be found. And don't forget that the shops will also be open and in full swing, with some of them offering unique discounts and sales for this weekend only!

Community yard sales are organized so that homes in a single town or neighborhood put out their items for sale on the same day, which attracts more customers since there is a large variety of shopping to do in a condensed area.

Merrickville-Wolford Chamber of Commerce President Robyn Eagle told the Times that the Community Yard Sale has been a tradition for over 20 years. It was initially started by the Chamber, and quickly turned into a “phenomenal” event attracting visitors from far outside the Village. She reported that people often come out very early to try and get the best deal. “There really are a lot of great finds,” Robyn said.

Contrary to what some people might believe, the event is not just a “yard sale,” but is actually a kickoff to the Village’s summer tourism season that typically includes fundraisers, deals and sales from local businesses, and more. While the Chamber was responsible for creating and promoting the event

decades ago, its role is now much more minimal. The Chamber still promotes the event through social media, but it is truly a communityrun event. “People embrace it wholeheartedly,” Robyn added. “It’s a great way to get rid of stuff that you don’t often need in your basement or your attic. It has taken on a life of its own.”

This year’s event will be rain or shine, which differs from some past years when it would be planned for a Saturday, with the following Sunday as a “rain date”.

Also different is that in the past, proceeds from the event would go to the Chamber as the organizer, but that is no longer the case – instead, the focus is on bringing the community together, and giving residents a chance to access good deals, and, on the flip side, get rid of things they no longer need.

This makes it difficult to know how much the information included in the Township Report to Gourlay covered all four Townships, or just Wolford. But, as the population within the four areas were concentrated in Wolford, it is quite likely that the data referred primarily to that unit. It will be remembered from previous articles that Oxford-on-Rideau’s total population in 1818 was just 71, where as Wolford had over 300 inhabitants at that time, living in 55 houses.

When I started my online campaign against sexual harassment in the workplace for The Legal Clinic I was not prepared for the almost daily onslaught of "friendly" messages I would receive from romance scammers trolling the internet looking for middle-aged professional victims.

Here is the most recent such message I received on my workplace Twitter account, by way of an example: I'm sorry for intruding into your privacy, I was actually searching for an old friend when I came across your profile on twitter suggestion.

of online sexual harassment have increased markedly since more people have been working from home because of the pandemic. So what can be done to prevent this type of harassment in the first place?

The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) recommends the following prevention measures: -Use a gender-neutral email address -give as little personal information as possible on your signature line -do not list your e-mail address on any Web pages -Turn off location settings that may be embedded in your device -Remove tags as necessary on posts or photos, -Limit the information you share in your "out of office" message -Use encryption, privacy

settings, software, or other technological tools to increase the security -Watch for “red flags”, for example, someone asking where you live or where you work -Do not share personal information in public forums anywhere online -if it is someone related to your workplace report the incident to your employer right away For your own sake, it is best not to engage in a confrontation with a harasser online as you may say something in a moment of anger or frustration that could harm your reputation and your career. tres. It is interesting that the term “toise” was used in this case. It was originally a unit of measurement in France and seems to have survived in Upper Canada even into the Nineteenth Century. Other measurements were used in describing wheat, for example. When asked how much wheat needed to be sown per acre, the response from Wolford was “A bushel and a peck, Winchester measure”.

Agriculture was mixed in Wolford, both livestock and crops were raised by the settlers, and a fixed rate of payment was established for buying and selling, as well as for paying workers in the fields.

The long winter stopped farm work as the sleighing season began and usually lasted from December until March. Settlers began ploughing near the end of April, or beginning of May. Fall wheat was generally sown in September; spring wheat at the beginning of May. Harvesting of winter wheat took place in August, and spring wheat, and other grain, about the first of September. An average crop, when well cultivated, yielded 20 bushels per acre, “and sometimes 25".

The land was gradually cleared and gained in value.

The report noted the change in valuation as the clearance improved its situation. “The price of wild land at the first settlement of the township, is 1s 3d. per acre, provided it was remote from any settlement. According as the township became settled, and increased in population, wild lands enhanced in proportion, so that at present it is worth 5s. per acre.”

Clearing and farming the land was hard and usually required help from neighbours and, more often, paid

labourers. Hiring help to clear the land of trees and bush, and fencing the cleared tract, cost the farmer £4 per acre; or £3 if room and board was included. During the winter months, labourers were paid $7 on an annual basis, and in the summer, from 10 to 12 dollars a month. In harvest, generally, the pay for helpers was a dollar per day, or a bushel of whatever grain he is hired to reap. In all cases, women were generally paid a dollar per week.

Skilled trades received a higher pay, naturally, with blacksmiths, masons, carpenters, etc., charging 7s. 6d. per day. The use of currency was confusing, as Gourlay pointed out in his final Report. “In many of the Reports, prices were given in dollars: in some, New York Currency, or 8s. to the dollar, was spoken of. To prevent confusion, I have converted these into the provincial currency of 5s. to a dollar, and four dollars to the pound, of 18s. sterling.”

That is far from clear, as far as I’m concerned, but it does indicate the complexity of the currency system in Upper Canada before the metric system of dollars and cents was introduced in the 1850's.

By 1818, Wolford has been in the process of settlement for twenty years, and the initial phase of pioneer settlement was passing quickly. A stable community had been established, with its annual cycle of seedtime and harvest, with social activities, economic enterprise, and political structures all well advanced. In the last of this series, we’ll take a look at the basic costs of living in Wolford and surrounding townships in the first decades of the Nineteenth Century.

A grandfather’s story

Frank Banning This is part of a series of articles on Indigenous issues and history to promote awareness of our shared history among the general population.

by Kateri Skaarup He was 15 years old. Too young to enlist, but yet he did anyway under a fake name.

He did so alongside his lifelong best friend. They were trained to fight.

Prior to being shipped overseas, it was discovered that he was underage, however, by this point he was 17. The commanding officer approached the boy’s mother for permission, as the Canadian Government had already invested time into this boy and he was ready.

With strength from her young son, the mother reluctantly said “yes”.

The boy and his friend were shipped overseas and were in a wave that stormed beaches on June 6, 1944, D-Day. The 17-year-old boy made it through the initial gunfire and grenade blasts with his battalion and upon settling in a trench, he asked others where his best friend was. A soldier pointed to a lifeless body.

At that moment, that 17-year-old boy’s life was

his life, his wife, his family, and his home. But there was always that heavy weight inside that he never expressed.

And then a voice spoke to him — again— whoever it was, that gave him the idea and courage to act on a need.

He needed a way to heal, and knew that many others did as well at the time. And for many decades, this young man and his best friend were not recognized as Canadian Soldiers or “Remembered” at the typical services that are held on November 11 along with many others who shared his heritage.

And so it began. On November 11, 1995, the first Remembrance Day Service was held on the plateau of Mt McKay, the Sacred Mountain of the Thunder Bay area, in honour of Indigenous Canadian Soldiers and Veterans.

Everyone is welcome but the focus is clear: Respect and Remember.

The young man passed on his 84th birthday on February 22, 2010. His name was Frank Banning.

changed forever. He was sent to retrieve water for his troop while still grasping the loss of his “brother”. As he made his way across the battlefield, explosions continued to go off around him. He dove to the ground with the hope of hiding, when a voice spoke to him and told him to get up.

As he stood, he was struck in the shin with large shards of shrapnel.

Maybe it was God, maybe it was his friend, or maybe a simple coincidence. Who, or whatever, it was, he was lucky, for if he had not have listened to that voice, that would have been the end of this young man’s story.

He was transported to a tent, then a hospital, and eventually shipped back to Canada, to his home and mother. When he returned home, it was without his best friend. A burden, a weight, a heavy heart, was carried from that day forward within this young man. He married the love of his life and they created 11 children; seven boys, and four girls.

Those children gave him over 60 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved

The propane industry was also present. Represented by the World LPG Association, we were there to remind the world that low-emission propane is uniquely able to provide solutions, in countless applications, to immediately reduce carbon emissions all

over the world.

The CPA believes that a comprehensive energy strategy includes using all energy options that help fight climate change. As a safe, affordable, portable, and Canadian-made, low-carbon energy solution, today’s propane checks all the boxes. In short, it is energy for all.

No matter where you live in Canada, propane can provide an immediate and affordable reduction in GHGs. And the increasing production of renewable propane, as we

tions, is 245g/MJ. Compare that to the Cl of propane, which is 75g/MJ, or about 66 per cent less carbon intensity.

The data strongly suggests that elec-tric furnaces replacing oil furnaces in NS means there would be no meaningful reductions in GHGs. In fact, it could result in an increase in GHGs. On the other hand, switching out home heating oil with propane would result in an immedi-ate reduction in GHGs of about 38 per cent.

For transportation, zero tailpipe emissions don’t mean zero GHGs. Not when the Cl of the electricity is 245g/MJ. Pro-pane vehicles produce about 26 per cent less GHGs than gasoline and 98 per cent fewer particulates than diesel vehicles. So, in NS, clearly propane is a cleaner option than electricity, gasoline and die-sel.

The ability to provide immediate benefits to Indigenous and remote communities is another reason propane needs to be part of Canada’s low-emission future. Far too many Indigenous com-munities continue to rely on diesel for home heating and power generation, paying millions of dollars in

But the Propane Advantage is hampered by a curious aspect of the climate change debate: selective application of the available data.

The need to share and amplify data responsibly is evident in calls to “electrify everything.” For example, electrification isn't the solution right now in the five provinces and territories where the carbon intensity (Cl) of electricity produc-tion is exponentially higher than that of propane.

Does it really make sense to offer subsidies for mainly coal-fired electrification of heating, transportation, and other applications, and not at least incentivize the expanded use of propane? A larger propane footprint would lower GHGs in these provinces.

Take Nova Scotia, for example, owing to coal, petcoke, and oil, the Cl of the electricity production, as published under the federal Clean Fuel Standard draft regula-

remediation costs from diesel and oil spills.

Propane is not a greenhouse gas; if spilled it does not harm air, land or water.

Replacing diesel with propane means building healthier and more prosperous communities. Working in partnership with Indigenous communities and gov-ernment, the propane industry can affect real, immediate change in reducing GHG emissions.

Propane also has a central role to play in a low-emission future for agriculture.

Whether it’s used for heating, irrigation, drying grain, standby generators or a variety of other applications, propane powers today’s highperformance farms, with little infrastructure required.

And yet, under the federal Green-house Gas Pollution Pricing Act, carbon-intense fuels such as gas and diesel are exempt from the carbon tax for agriculture applications, but propane is not.

There is only one word that describes this policy: backward.

Canadians want a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future. Long-term targets provide focus and motivation

to-ward the goal to improve the wellbeing of future generations.

But the targets themselves must be supported by actions now that support the transition. That’s why programs that help convert home energy from heating oil and diesel to propane now makes so much sense.

I was raised with boiled vegetables, without exception (blah!). My appreciation of vegetables has increased dramatically thanks to my ladies who have introduced me to some really tasty alternatives. Today, I’d like to demonstrate to you why so many folks have moved to vegetarian cooking, some because of the cost of meat, others because they prefer a healthier lifestyle. This recipe for a Roasted Vegetable Medley is tops in my book.

Roasted Vegetable Medley

Ingredients 1 cup of Brussel Sprouts, cleaned and cut in half 1 cup of Cauliflower florets 1 cup of Broccoli florets 1 cup of chopped red pepper 1 cup of chopped onions 1 cup of sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into small cubes 5 teaspoons of crushed garlic (optional, but really nice) 5 tablespoons of olive oil 2 tablespoons of dry sherry, orange or apple juice ½ cup of walnuts, sliced ½ cup of Craisins or dried cranberries, whole Preparation 1. Preheat your oven to 375F. 2. Mix all of your veggies together in a large bowl 3. Add your olive oil , sherry or juice and crushed garlic and toss 4. Spread your veggies evenly on a cookie sheet that you have sprayed with Canola oil 5. Roast 20 minutes to a half hour, keeping an eye on them and stirring from time to time 6. Add your walnuts and cranberries and roast a bit longer, til your veggies are tender 7. Serve warm, with a nice slice of warm bread cut from a full loaf or maybe with baguette Since you didn’t see me mention salt (again), you can liven us this dish a bit more by sprinkling with Parmesan Cheese.

A little nostalgia goes a long way Tracing the medical history of nostalgia involves a sharp U-turn. Centuries ago, it was considered a psychopathological disorder. Still today, nostalgia can be associated with negative feelings and sadness. But researchers are reaching new conclusions about the health benefits of wistful affection for the past.

We recently witnessed the medicinal effects firsthand on a special family trip. A full seventy years later, we returned to the majestic Manoir Richelieu, a historic hotel northeast of Quebec City on the shores of the St. Lawrence River. As the former hotel doctor-in-residence, and the accompanying story-seeking family, we were treated to a wonderful walk down memory lane.

It was hard not to notice the spring in our steps, the smiles, and the upbeat mood.

Nostalgia comes from the Greek root “nostos” meaning “home” and “algos” meaning “pain”. Distinct from “homesickness”, which strikes when far from home and justifiably induces sadness, loneliness, and other depressing feelings, nostalgia can swing either way. One can be sad to recall “the good ole days”, or nostalgia can stimulate reward pathways in our brains.

Many studies have demonstrated the way memories make us feel good.

A study published in Psychological Science found that nostalgia boosts perceptions of social support and that highly resilient people use nostalgia as a tool to beat back loneliness.

Another study published in the journal Appetite examined how nostalgia influences attitudes about food. Experiments showed that people consumed more and reported more favorable attitudes towards healthy food when feeling nostalgic.

Nostalgia also diminished the consumption of unhealthy food.

Another interesting study linked nostalgia to creativity.

Two groups of students were invited to write for five minutes.

One group was instructed to think about an ordinary experience while the other was asked to think about something nostalgic.

The latter group produced far more creative writing.

Organizational effectiveness gurus took note. A report in the Harvard Business Review recommended employers use nostalgia to make workers feel socially supported, energized, and confident, noting how this leads to more workplace creativity.

But watch the pocketbook, because other research points to the effect of nostalgia as a trigger for charitable giving, built on an abundance of empathy that comes along with happy personal associations.

Count on Shakespeare to have a take. He wrote in Othello, “To mourn a mischief that is past and gone is the next way to draw new mischief on.”

Dr. Constantine Sedikides, Professor of Social and Personality Psychology at the University of Southampton in the U.K., has spent his career studying nostalgia. He would agree with Shakespeare’s recommendation to move on to new mischief.

Dr. Sedikides says he has adopted strategies for increasing nostalgia in his own life. “I don’t miss an opportunity to build nostalgic-to-be memories,” he says. “We call this anticipatory nostalgia.”

Our recent visit to the Manoir Richelieu helped our family connect with the past and share experience across generations.

But you don’t have to travel to achieve the same benefit.

Try taking ten minutes to reflect on a special place or time.

Look back into your past and recall an occasion when you achieved a goal, when you first met a special friend, or even something recent that you enjoyed. Then, having immersed yourself in the memory, check to see how you feel. You should notice a sense of happiness.

Another technique is to meander through the pages of an old photo album.

Need motivation? A study of people who regularly thought about past positive experiences observed the added benefit of leaving them better able to cope with the inevitable stresses in life.

The God Delusion

than what hockey team wins the Stanley Cup, or whether the Liberals or Conservatives rule the country?

Why, then, should discussing such issues be considered “irritating”? Why do people react so negatively, arrogantly and dismissively to any attempt to examine the truth, or otherwise, of the many claims and counterclaims with which religious belief is concerned?

There is a general sense that “religious” people are somehow to be laughed at, dismissed, or treated as somehow lacking in brainpower and common sense.

To my mind, people who won’t, don’t, or can’t think and discuss these matters rationally are the ones who are refusing to use their brains and deal with reality (or what might be the most real thing in their lives, like it or not).

But these past years have seen the rise of what has been called “the New Atheists”, a group of writers, scientists and others who are not prepared to continue the traditional “don’t talk about religion” approach.

They believe that religion is not just the past-time of the foolish, but an active and dangerous threat to the future of humanity itself.

The campaign of the New Atheists has led to some fascinating public debates at prestigious universities around the world, as Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins, in

by David Shanahan When I was growing up, it was always said that you should never talk about politics or religion. I’m sure that was probably true of where you grew up too. To be honest, I’ve never understood the reasoning behind that tradition: after all, is there anything more interesting than those subjects? Sports?

Flora and fauna? Music?

There have always been issues that divide people, and religion is certainly one of them. Whether it is the divide between religions in the broader sense (Islam versus Judaism, for example), or divisions within religions (Catholics v. Protestants), the feeling seemed to be that talking about religion as such, would inevitably lead to conflict and, at the very least, bad feeling.

But, logically speaking, there is no subject whatsoever that has more serious implications for each person on this planet than that basic one about what lies at the heart of all religious belief.

Is there a god, or God? Is this life all we have, and are we just accidents of biology and history? If there is a god, who or what is he/she/it, and what does that god think about us? Think about this for a moment: if there is any truth in the existence of god, or an afterlife, isn’t that the most momentous aspect of life, ultimately? Does knowing the facts about those questions not matter more

particular, took on some of Islam’s and Christianity’s leading thinkers and scientists. As a Christian, I am perhaps a little biased in my approach to these interactions, but I must be honest here also. I was quite unsure about watching the debates and other YouTube discussions, because there was always the fear that, either the atheists would have a point the Christians couldn’t answer, or the Christian representative would not make a sufficiently strong case.

I leave it to you to make up your own minds as you watch these debates, but one aspect of the New Atheist approach particularly struck me. It was expressed most succinctly by one of the great Christian thinkers and scientists of our day, Dr. John Lennox, a mathematician, multi-linguist, holder of Doctorates from Cambridge, Oxford and Cardiff, as well as other degrees, and a Fellow of Mathematics and Philosophy of Science at Oxford University. But it wasn’t a deep insight into any academic discipline that impressed me. It was a simple realization he had as he listened to the arguments from Hitchens and Dawkins. As they talked about God and Christianity, and argued against the rational and logical basis for belief, Lennox said to Dawkins: “I don’t believe in the God you don’t believe in!”.

In other words, the idea of God, Christianity, and the history of religious belief held by the New Atheists was simply untrue. It was

not, as Lennox said, the God he believed in that they were condemning. The atheists were setting up a straw man (or straw God): it was an inaccurate and unhistorical understanding that Hitchens and Dawkins were disproving. The real God Delusion was the false image of God and religious belief that the New Atheists were setting forth in order to knock down.

It occurs to me that the traditional attitude of not talking about religion has only led to a situation where most people have no real idea who God is meant to be, what religious people actually believe, or what the history of religious belief has been. When you think about it, this is not surprising: not talking, not reading, not hearing discussions on any subject, only leave one ignorant. Ignorance is not meant to be the aim of intelligent people, curious people. How ironic, then, that it is the seekers, the researchers, those who have actually looked into the subject, should be dismissed as unintelligent fools whose beliefs are simply “irritating”!beliefs are simply “irritating”!
