Jim passed away at the Kemptville District Hospital on Tuesday, April 5, 2022 at the age of 76. Predeceased by his beloved wife Sonja, Jim will be sadly missed by his children Erika (Joe) Cuccaro and James Ainslie Bertram, his grandchildren Matteo and Leona and his sister Elaine (Wayne Sutherland). Son of the late Doris and Arthur Bertram, Jim was born in Renfrew, Ontario. He was eldest brother to Elaine, Kim and George. Growing up, Jim was an avid aquarist, keen reader and enjoyed many adventures with King, his Great Dane. In high school, he discovered a passion and talent for football and loved to regale family and friends with stories of the game. Jim was working

at Met Life when he first met Sonja and the two fell in love. They were married on August 23, 1969 and enjoyed a deep and loving relationship. Jim was a gifted teacher with the Ottawa Carleton District School Board, where he taught languages, led student exchange programs and advocated for his fellow teachers as a union leader.

He was deeply committed to enriching his students’ lives—challenging them to think critically and to work hard to realize their potential.

In 1983, Jim and Sonja moved to South Gower where they built an oasis in the country.

A devoted father, Jim took pride and pleasure in providing for his family. He encouraged his children to think

independently and loved good food, great music and the company of dear friends. Jim loved North Grenville and was an active community member. He was honoured to serve as Councillor from 2014-2018. He loved chatting with friends old and new at Bubba & Bugs, Brewed Awakenings, Hardstones, The Brigadoon, the library and all around town. Family and friends will remember Jim as a philosopher, advocate and storyteller. He was a man with deep feelings, a strong moral compass and a boundless passion for learning. For Jim, education was a lifelong journey and he was always looking for new challenges. A curious and discerning reader, Jim published two books of

FFC Arboretum Plaque Program unveiled

Ferguson Forest Centre Corporation President Carl Doucette is pleased to announce the initiation of the arboretum tree identification plaque program.

“Ever since the establishment of the Ferguson Forest Centre Corporation (FFCC), the intent has been to have an arboretum that provides educational, activity, and contemplative opportunities for the residents of North Grenville and the immediate area. The community has appeared to embrace the many activities now seasonally available in

the 10 hectare arboretum including, among other things, disc golf, groomed cross country ski trails, toboggan hill, walking trails, park land, benches, picnic tables, and strategically located and selected trees and shrubs.”

He went on to say that now the FFCC has unveiled an opportunity for residents and local businesses to support the FFCC and the arboretum by donating towards the purchase and locating of tree and shrub identification plaques.

Maple Weekend raises $3,600 for Ukraine an organization that provides meals following disasters and other such tragedies. Bruce is hoping that the KYC will be invited to run the breakfast again next year. He described this year as a “special effort”, because of what is happening in Ukraine, but if the KYC is invited to run the breakfast again next year, profits will be kept to benefit the KYC. The KYC and the Rotary Club did not run the fundraiser alone. Two local businesses pitched in to help.

Food Basics provided a gift certificate, and the B&H Grocery Store provided all of the sausages for the breakfast at cost. Bruce relayed that Jim Beveridge at the B&H had wanted to provide the sausages for free, but Bruce insisted that getting the sausages at cost was good enough.

The event itself drew a large crowd, including Mayor Peckford and municipal Councillors, and many of the guests took the opportunity to explore trails in the area.

Overall, $3,600 was raised, along with a great many smiles.

Visitors enjoyed the fresh air, the forest, and the pancakes

by Brandon Mayer The Kemptville Campus Agroforestry Centre held its annual Sugar Shack Pancake Breakfast on April 2 and 3, which served over 800 breakfasts to guests. The event was held over “Maple Weekend”, which is an event hosted by the Ontario Maple Syrup Producers’ Association to celebrate the province’s maple syrup season, and provide education about the maple syrup production process.

This year, the Campus asked the Kemptville Youth Centre (KYC) to be in charge April 13, 2022

of running the breakfast, and KYC President Bruce Wehlau graciously accepted.

However, Bruce knew that the two-day fundraising breakfast would require more hands on deck than the KYC could provide alone, so he approached the Kemptville Rotary Club (of which he is also a member) to put a team of about 15 or 16 volunteers together using members from both organizations. To Bruce’s knowledge, the Knights of Columbus has run the Sugar Shack Pancake Breakfast in past years, but did not have enough volunteers to run it

this year. Whichever organization runs the breakfast is allowed to keep any profits made from the breakfast itself, while the Agroforestry Centre uses the opportunity to sell their maple syrup.

With neither the KYC nor the Rotary Club expecting the fundraising money for their budgets this year, the decision was made to donate all profits to aid Ukraine. “We thought, well since it’s found money, let’s do the work and send it to Ukraine,” said Bruce.

Groceries or gas?

by a local resident I am a privileged, white, female millennial. Both my partner and I work full time, and even have side gigs to boost our income. And yet, every week I have to ask myself the same question: Do I have enough money for gas, or should I be cutting trips short to better afford groceries for our family of four with two rapidly growing children?

Which meat is on sale this week? What can I make with that cut of meat? Do I have time to make a meal, or am I still at work during that time?

Will I be able to refinance my mortgage? Is the rising prime interest rate going to preclude me from being approved? I guess I shouldn’t complain, because I’m already in the market, but again, every two weeks I have to ensure that there’s enough money left in the account to make that mortgage payment.

These questions simply didn’t occur as frequently prepandemic. The truth is, I work for a business that is lucky to have survived the pandemic and has not been able to offer raises (Even for the basic cost of living) since 2019. Again, I’m trying to count myself lucky on one hand, but on the other hand, I start to wonder when it’s time to reach out to the food bank. I feel like I would be taking from people who may need it more.

The impact on our declining mental health is grim, but cannot be fully addressed without time and money. We are both short on those things. A positive attitude may be free, but, frankly, it is extremely difficult to maintain.

We trim the budget by making our own lunches (even though the kids want to have pizza or sub day at school, we keep making their lunches to save money). New clothes, or a trip to the salon? Nope, not for the adults. Just the kids as they grow out of clothes. We make do and mend what we have.

Entertainment? Dates? Nope. We will use those funds to scrape together gifts to send to the kids’ birthday parties, because God forbid anyone think we can’t afford to give something, and, of course, your child’s friend deserves to feel special.

When it’s time to change tires on cars, or if something important breaks in the house, like an appliance, or we just need general maintenance on our home, it usually breaks the bank. We’re now relying on credit, and the debt load can no longer handle it.

If one of us was to lose our job tomorrow and not be able to replace the income within a week or two, it would be devastating. If we had to stop working due to illness, it would be life altering. The rising cost of everything is having a major impact on us, and we are not even the neediest among the population.

I do not write this for sympathy, rather I want everyone in this situation to know you’re not alone. I wish I had a solution that was fast and effective, but all I can say is, there’s an election around the corner, and if ever there was time to change the way things have been done forever in this riding, the time is now. Stop doing the same old things and expecting different results. Start thinking about your fellow hardworking community members, who have struggles that are seen and unseen.

Beth Donovan Hospice annual Hike for Hospice

by Brandon Mayer The 12th annual Hike for Hospice is set for the end of next month, with the event planned for May 29 at the Ferguson Forest Centre in Kemptville. The event, which is run by the Beth Donovan Hospice, also has a virtual option for those who can’t make it to the in-person

event. The Hike is part of a national fundraising initiative which raises both money and awareness in support of local Hospice services. This year, participants will have the option of doing a 1km, 3km or 5km walk or run.

“The hike is an opportunity for individuals who have been touched by Hospice to celebrate and walk

Besides the exercise, exploration of a beautiful part of North Grenville, and the feeling of helping your community and honouring lost loved ones, there are other benefits to participating in this year’s Hike. Another benefit is the return of Woofs and Wags, meaning participants can bring their dog along for the Hike. Local teen curler achieves Provincial success

by Melanie Sharpe Mya Sharpe, a local Spencerville teen and Grade 9 student at St Michaels Catholic High School in Kemptville, was part of a team which won the Ontario Curling Association’s U-18 Women’s Provincial Curling Championships held at the Royal Kingston Curling Club this past weekend.

The team, skipped by Emma Acres, earlier qualified in the U-18 Women’s Qualifier held in Brockville last December. Team Acres was one of two women’s teams to qualify, giving them the chance to compete in KingsApril 13, 2022

ton at the U-18 Provincial Curling Championship. They were one of eight teams to compete and claimed the Provincial title and the right to call themselves “Team Ontario” at the upcoming National Curling Championship in Oakville May 1-7.

Team Acres played hard in the round robin play, qualified for the play offs and then went undefeated to claim their title. “We communicated and played well as a team and were rewarded with huge success!” says Mya. Team Acres, an Ottawa based team out of RCMP, coached by Phil Mainville,

led by several experienced coaches who worked with children to introduce and develop important skills needed to become a member of a successful 4-person curling team.

Mya has so many people to be thankful for in her earlier years. Many people have put a lot of hard work and dedication into her dreams and aspirations. Practicing several times a week, and playing in as many bonspiels as possible, has led Mya to where she is today.

“I have always wanted to compete in the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, and the Olympics some day”, she says, “and winning a Provincial Championship, with a chance to represent our Province, is just the beginning.”

Everybody hurts

by David Shanahan Before Covid, before Brexit, before Ukraine, before Trump and all the other disasters that have hit the world, it seems we were all sleep-walking towards a cliff edge. Almost without realising it, the traditional mores and structures of society were being slowly eroded. It is, perhaps, only now, as we come to terms with the events of these past few years, that we can see how much the world, especially in Europe and North America, has changed.

Globalisation had been seen as a positive development, a bringing together of world economies, integrating national and international systems for maximum efficiency and profitability. Of course, the question of who benefitted from all those profits was one which only the more activist among us really noticed.

There were hints, rumours, troubling statistics. 80% or 90% of the wealth held by just the infamous 1%, as the

rich got richer and the poor become desperate.

The pandemic illustrated the imbalance of things: the “West” with a surfeit of vaccines while the entire continent of Africa were starved of relief. Job losses in almost every sector of national economies as countries spent money they didn’t have on keeping people fed and housed. The future became threatening, as we wondered how we could recover. But, as it seems, the rich, which includes Canada, will survive.

But thousands, possibly more, jobs were lost as corporations closed factories and mines and sent the jobs offshore, so they could save more millions of dollars. Meanwhile, entire towns and communities were destroyed, ravaged by unemployment, loss of dignity and thrown on the social scrapheap.

Now, we reap the whirlwind, as Europe’s dependence on Russian oil and gas leaves countries shackled and contributing millions to Putin’s war machine. When did we

decide that profits were more important than people, that corporations were more sacred than communities?

But something else was lost over the years: a sense of honour, perhaps? In early times, meaning only a few decades ago, there were standards of behaviour that were accepted as the norm. In politics, certain kinds of things were grounds for resignation and dishonour: lying, stealing, personal attacks on your opponents. That is all gone now. There is no shame.

Worse, after Trump and his acolytes, Boris Johnson and the Conservative Party in the U.K., none of these things are cause for regret and apology.

Politicians used to argue and fight over ideology, over policies and procedures. Now, it seems, they make everything personal. In the 1960s, it was said that the personal was political. Now, the political is personal. Parties don’t just criticise their opponent’s electoral platforms, they attack their opponent’s character. Opposing parties

could disagree on the floor of the House, but then would join each other for a drink at the bar. This is a dreadful deterioration in our body politic, and it is reflected in our society generally.

Is there any need to talk about the atmosphere which all too often contaminates social media discourse? We have learned new words, like “troll”, not to mention the corporate versions: “cyberattack” and “hacking”, ransom ware. We have become used to, if not resigned, to the despicable language that is used by people online against other people they don’t even know. We seem to believe that we have a right to engage in character assassination, insults and foul language, against anyone we think disagrees with us. When did this happen? How did we let it become acceptable?

Many years ago, Senator Joseph McCarthy in the U.S. carried on a campaign of innuendo and insinuation against anyone, if he thought it would advance his career.

After ruining the lives of too many people, mainly honourable and decent people, one man finally had enough.

“Have you no shame?”, he demanded of McCarthy, and the house of cards McCarthy had built fell apart.

Is that a question we should be asking ourselves these days? Have we no shame? Are we content to allow politicians, corporations, governments, and the media to continue to debase our society with this kind of approach to life? I have used this quote before, in other circumstances, but it is relevant now more than ever.

The transfer of this land is intended for the sole purpose of paving over acres of publicly owned heritage farmland and the destruction of numerous farm buildings in order to build a 235-bed provincial prison. This prime farmland and serviceable barns and buildings have already cost millions of dollars to the taxpayers and should be preserved as the valuable agricultural resources that they are.

I am extremely disappointed with your statement, “I am unable to assist you”.

The Agriculture Research Institute of Ontario, which is under your purview, has title to the property in question and a mandate to protect farmland. Your reference to the transfer being “substan-

tially completed” is an opaque statement that does not diminish your capacity and obligation to do the right thing.

I know you have heard from many other groups and individuals asking you not to authorize the transfer, including the National Farmers Union (NFU) – Ontario, Canadian Organic Growers, and a group of food scholars from across Canada. The Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario, Just Food (Ottawa) and Sustain Ontario have also joined the call. Over 290 people have signed on to an email zap sending you the same message.

You know that the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) and NFU-Ontario, as well as numerous other farm organizations, are calling for protection of all farmlands, which are presently being lost at a rate of around 175 acres/ day (according to OFA). This is becoming more crucial as we need more food sovereignty and security in these uncertain times.

This farm that is slated for transfer could go a long

way to increase local food production and associated jobs in North Grenville, as a community small farm business incubator and hub.

The available buildings are essential infrastructure that do no not exist elsewhere on the Kemptville campus lands. A perfect marriage exists between the base for a farmland bank and barns and outbuildings available to carry out animal, fruit, or vegetable production. Its wanton destruction is unwarranted, unnecessary, and a total waste of resources already paid for by taxpayers.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, I may live in Ottawa, but I have enjoyed the warm embrace of Kemptville during covid from afar. I have two sisters who live in the town, which gives me cause to know it better. And in particular, great service from local businesses who are just a phone call away.

In one case, the sales person at Business Strategies not only rustled up the desired puzzle purchase I made, but had everything to make the gift a memorable one. It was wrapped in birthday paper for me, gratis, a card was purchased and filled in with my mystery greetings to my sister, and delivered to her doorstep that very day. I didn’t even have to leave my house to make it happen. Now that had my sister wondering!

The florist at the B&H created beautiful arrangements of flowers, all in varying arrays of yellows and golds, for my birthday. This was a huge surprise and, let me tell you, five special bouquets can make your home glow! Each bouquet was from one of my

Mayor's message:

The community input into the farm lands

by Nancy Peckford Earlier this week, Council began the process of seeking input from our community on additional uses for the provincially owned, 182-acre parcel of farm-side lands formerly owned by Kemptville College – located across from the Kemptville Campus.

These lands are also the site where the provincial correctional facility – which was announced by the Ford government in August 2020 is also slated to go. Some have assumed that any other uses for these farmlands is impossible given the future plans for the Correctional facility. This isn’t true.

The former Kemptville College farmside lands are comprised of a large 182 acre parcel, including several buildings and barns. These lands are separate and apart from the 626 acres of land that the Municipality purchased in 2018, now known as Kemptville Campus. This Campus property is fully owned by the municipality and is managed by a notfor-profit board comprised largely of community leaders from North Grenville. The property includes croplands, wetlands, greenhouses, an 18 acre sugarbush, many walking trails and approximately 17 buildings.

Currently, there are over 600 students from JK to grade 12 attending French and English schools on the campus.

The Campus greenhouses have seen new life through the efforts of the Campus’ wonderful volunteer coordinator Claude Smith, and a University of Ottawa bio-tech firm.

The Campus’ evolution as

a municipal asset represents tremendous possibility for our community’s economic development, educational options and recreational experiences, including Kemptville Live and the upcoming International Plowing Match in September 2022.

Incidentally, I have three children who attend school on the Campus. I am deeply committed to seeing the full leveraging of these Campus lands, including the return of key agriculture and related apprenticeship programs that offer critical skills-building opportunities. In collaboration with provincial Ministers Steve Clark and Monte McNaughton, TR Leger High School and the other boards, we are making that happen.

Not unlike the Campus, Council also clearly recognizes that the farmside property has great community value – given its 100-year history with the Kemptville College.

As plans for the Correctional facility evolve, it is crucial that the significant remaining farmside lands and buildings not required by the Correctional facility be transferred as quicky as possible to the municipality.

In discussions with the Solicitor General and her officials since August 2020, this has been Council’s resounding message - and the Ministry has written a letter highlighting their intent to make this possible.

We know that the remaining farmside lands not used by the Correctional facility can serve as a dynamic space for community-driven agriculture and related initiatives, including public access gardens, equine activities,

However, the reality is that Council was not consulted on the Province’s plan to build the correctional facility.

Further, the Province has not given any indication that the project will not be completed in 2027 as identified in the August 2020 announcement.

Before I was elected as Mayor, I didn’t always fully appreciate the limits to municipal authority. On more than one occasion, I have wished it was different. This said, Council is working hard with our talented municipal staff team to adopt higher standards for how development happens.

North Grenville flies Ukrainian Flag The Municipality of North Grenville is flying the Ukraine flag in support of the eastern European country during the ongoing Russian invasion.

“On behalf of Council and residents of North Grenville, we are flying the Ukrainian flag to show support and solidarity to the people of Ukraine during this crisis,” said Mayor Nancy Peckford.

“This is a horrific conflict that has displaced 50 percent of the country’s children and forced millions to flee. It has affected many neighbouring countries in Europe and beyond.

The Ukrainian diaspora is very strong in Canada and we know there are North Grenville residents who are personally touched by this conflict”.

“We are grateful for the outpouring of community support to date. North Grenville has proven, once again, to be a caring and generous community. Donations of all sorts – financial, items for silent auctions, food, clothing, lodging – have been given without hesitation,” said Councillor Kristin Strackerjan.

“Many volunteers have shown up for efforts both big and small, and residents have found many creative ways to raise awareness and funds,” Councillor Strackerjan added. “All of these events and opportunities to contribute have been grassroots initiatives and community-led.”

On the weekend, a local fundraiser was held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 212, organized by North Grenville Helps Ukraine, a local group of volunteers who are supporting Ukraine in their time of need.

This music-filled event raised over $4,000 via donations and a silent auction, with all money collected being directed to the Red Cross for immediate use on the ground. These funds will be directed to the Southgate Church Ukrainian support efforts and the Red Cross.

IPM Raffle Quilt

The 2022 International Plowing Match Raffle Quilt.

by Elaine MacNaughtan The 2022 International Plowing Match Quilt Committee will be raffling off a specially made quilt at the plowing match, which will be held from September 20 to 24 on the former Kemptville College Campus.

The IPM raffle quilt is made up of 25 blocks, selected from the IPM Quilt Committee Quilt Block Challenge held earlier this year. It is a queen size quilt, and was custom quilted by Heritage Art Quilting in Richmond, Ontario.

Tickets for the raffle, at a cost of $2.00 each, will be available from members of

the five partner groups which make up the quilt committee and are the Kemptville Quilters Guild; The Thousand Island Quilters Guild; the Upper Canada Quilters Guild; Victoria’s Quilts Canada, Kemptville Branch, and the Kemptville District Hospital Auxiliary. Proceeds from the quilt raffle will be shared among the partners to be used for their projects within the community.

Raffle tickets will also be available at the “Home on the Farm Quilt Show & Tea Room” to be held August 19 and 20 at the W.B. George Centre in Kemptville, as well as at the local fall fairs and the

The first machine will be for an entry into the IPM Quilt Committee quilt competition and will be drawn at the “Home on the Farm Quilt Show & Tea Room” on Saturday, August 20 at 2 p.m.

The second machine will be for anyone attending the quilt show as well as those who toured the IPM Quilt Tent during the plowing match and that draw will take place on September 24 at 2 p.m. in the quilt tent.

by Brandon Mayer With the exciting news that North Grenville will host this year’s famous International Plowing Match & Rural Expo, it should come as no surprise that the organizers are in great need of volunteers. This year’s plowing match will take place from September 20-24. It is a large scale event which will take place on approximately 200 acres of land over a period of five days. This is why a staggering number of volunteers – approximately 1,200 – are needed to make the event a success.

Currently, the event organizers have recruited about 500 of the needed volunteers, and are hoping to hear from more people who are willing to help. Volunteers do not need to live in North Grenville to participate. Cathy Sheppard, who is the cochair of the IPM’s Volunteer Committee, along with North Grenville Councillor Dorren O’Sullivan, is appealing to people from all walks of life for help.

“There are many areas that still require assistance, and the use of your time may not be applied until several weeks before the event,” said Cathy. “We will need many

Spring 2020 was a challenge with the Covid virus; however, the greenhouses sold out quickly due to increased foot traffic, all the while maintaining the health protocols. Customers were happy to be outside with fresh air and nature and with colourful flowers.

When people ask: why Forget-me-Not? Claudia explains that years ago when her father passed away, they planted a tree and placed forget-me-nots around its base in memory of his encouragement and enthusiasm in their endeavour.

The Suttons offer an assortment of hanging baskets, flowering annuals and perennials, planters, vegetables and naturally grown potted herbs.

The heirloom tomatoes are in demand every Spring as well.

For plant sales, the nursery is open in early May with hours being Tuesday to Friday 9 to

With Chris being the "grower", he utilized his education and experience in forestry and business, while holding down a position as a school bus driver. Claudia's role in the greenhouse has been sales and publicity and together they combine their talents to make a team. More recently they have taken on beekeeping and hope to share their knowledge of both interests with their four grandsons.

Chris and Claudia have met many challenges as entrepreneurs, but have also reaped much joy, seeing customers each Spring walk away happily with their plant and flower treasures to brighten their lives.

Over the years and along with horticultural tours, talks and plant courses, they have transformed their acre property into an oasis that it is today. Being retired, both Claudia and Chris continue 7

boots on the ground. There is a need for every skill set and helping hand available.

We are sure the event will be incredibly memorable, and what better way to remember, than to be a part of it!”

Volunteer shifts would vary greatly, but most will be a half-day per shift. There will also be on-call shifts, and floaters to help wherever needed. The Volunteer Committee is seeking both workers and leaders in all skill sets, with examples including security, first aid, event planning, parades, antiques, education, servers, water, landscaping, and much more.

Those who volunteer for a half day get free access to the event for the other half of the day, but as Cathy Sheppard puts it, “The memory will be the biggest reward!”

The International Plowing Match & Rural Expo is a North American annual celebration of agriculture

and rural living. The five day event includes not just plowing competitions, but also learning opportunities, vendors, live entertainment, food, and activities for people of all ages. It carries the distinction of being the largest event of its kind in North America.

Perhaps one of the greatest reasons to become a volunteer is the fact that profits generated from the IPM each year are donated to the host community, meaning that North Grenville stands to financially benefit if enough volunteers lend their time to make the event a success.

Volunteers shine at Seniors’ Community Services

by Jill Woodley March and April are busy months at Seniors’ Community Services. With the welcoming of Spring, we are reminded of the value of our volunteers and the programs that are sustained by their generous gift of time. The heart and soul of SCS is truly the 140 volunteers who tirelessly ensure our programs and services continue to enhance the lives of hundreds of older adults who are interwoven in the rich fabric of this community.

During the week of March 21, we highlighted the Meals on Wheels program. In 2021, our volunteers delivered over 7,300 meals door to door. For many, access to nutritious, cost effective meals can be a challenge. It is one of the programs that is run primarily by volunteers who, no matter what the day brings, happily deliver meals to clients throughout North Grenville.

Even during the most difficult days of the pandemic, clients could rely on their friendly volunteers, who truly are

the eyes and ears of SCS. A delivery, a check-in, and, for some, the only point of human contact for the week.

This year, some folks were treated to a special delivery by Mayor Peckford and newly appointed Councillor Wilson. Special moments of connection with outstanding community members.

If April brings showers, it also brings the sunshine of National Volunteer Appreciation Week from April 24 to the 30. This is a time to mark the unparalleled contribution of our volunteers, and thank them for their support of SCS. After the last two years, we look forward to celebrating each and every one for their support during such a challenging time.

Over the last year, we embarked on a community project called Porch Chats with Seniors’ Community Services. Weekly, we highlight volunteers, community partners, and clients on Facebook, telling their story and sharing some special moments about their connec-

tion with SCS. We encourage you to follow along and learn more about your neighbours in your community!

Highlighting Jean Hartjes, and her 25-year commitment to the Meals on Wheels program, seemed a most fitting way to celebrate National Volunteer Week, and the truly remarkable commitment she has given to this community.

In 1995, Jean's husband, Adam, was volunteering with the MOW service here at SCS. We would be remiss if we did not mention that it was his inspiration that started Jean volunteering. When Adam faced illness, Jean stepped into his role and has never looked back.

Not only is Jean a volunteer with SCS, she is also an active participant in Seniors' Centre Without Walls, Cardio drumming, and the exercise program. She has also been very involved in the Singing Seniors choir and looks forward to a time it will again be entertaining the community. We are so inspired by Jean, and fortunate to have

The Resurrection

by David Shanahan This weekend, Christians celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus, and the importance of this event is stated quite categorically by Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians: “If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith...For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost.” [1 Cor. 15.

13-18] That is pretty clear, isn’t it? If Jesus was not raised from the dead, then our faith is useless, because the one we have put our faith in is not who he said he was. In other words, Christianity stands or falls on the truth of the Resurrection of Jesus. That makes it very important that we know what “resurrection” means, how we can know that it really happened, and what the implications are - not just for Christians, but the whole world.

The first thing to note is that when Jesus was resurrected, he did not just come back to life. Lazarus was brought back to life by Jesus

after a few days. The widow’s son was brought back to life also by Jesus, but these were not examples of Resurrection.

Lazarus and the boy remained what they had been before death, they were simply (!) restored to the life they had known before. If that had been the case with Jesus, there would not be the same unique importance placed on the event by Christians. He would have shared in a very unusual, but not unique experience.

The resurrection of Jesus was of a completely different nature. It also took place for a very different reason than the raising of Lazarus.

Immediately after finding the empty tomb, Mary Magdalene met the risen Lord, but for some reason she didn’t immediately recognise him.

Then he spoke her name, and she knew him, but he warned her not to touch him because he had not returned to the Father. Similarly, the two followers who met him on the road to Emmaus did not recognise him, even though he walked with them for some time and spoke to them at length. His death and resurrection went together in their minds: the death without the resurrection was a tragedy. The resurrection put the seal of truth on everything Jesus had said, preached and promised. It is still the pivotal event: if Jesus was not raised, Christianity is nothing.

However, “...if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.”

Two arrested and charged, stolen property recovered in catalytic converter thefts

Beginning in March 2022, the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) began an investigation dubbed "Project Maranta". The investigation was in response to an increase in catalytic converter thefts in the Municipality of North Grenville and surrounding area. The CSCU was assisted by members of the Grenville County OPP Detachment to help identify a vehicle and persons of interest.

On March 30, 2022, the CSCU conducted a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle as it entered a private parking lot, in the Town of Morrisburg, Ontario. Two accused were April 13, 2022

arrested without incident. A search incident to arrest led to the finding of three catalytic converters that had been recently cut from vehicles.

The CSCU also located and seized reciprocating saws, other tools, items designed to disguise identity, multiple mobile phones, and a quantity of suspected methamphetamine. The vehicle was also seized by police.

Otter Lake musician produces CD

by Brandon Mayer Dorothy Goubault has lived a life filled with adventure and love. She grew up on a horse farm outside of the small Ottawa Valley town of Douglas, west of Renfrew.

She describes her professional life as “barnyard to boardroom,” having now retired from a successful career with the Department of National Defence where, among other roles, she was appointed as an Adjudicator/Judge with the Veterans Review and Appeal Board.

Music – including singing, dancing, and fiddle tunes – have always been part of Dorothy’s life. However, it was only a few years ago that she began taking fiddling lessons. These lessons have paid off, as Dorothy has now recorded a full CD, though this is something she had never planned to do. The CD is dedicated to her late partner, Gerald Arthur McBride, for whom she wrote one original track on the CD, called “When Will I See You Again”.

Gerald passed away on February 13, 2020. Above all, Dorothy remembers how devoted and supportive he was, even at the time of her life when she could describe her home as “anywhere in Canada”. Gerald was always there to support her. “He took me to the airport Sunday mornings, and picked me up Friday nights,” Dorothy said.

“Gerald was my rock.”

After Gerald passed away, with the COVID-19 pandemic hitting suddenly just a month later, Dorothy felt very isolated. She found it difficult to talk about Gerald’s death, April 13, 2022

except with a few people close to her, and she lost her “voice”. As time passed, Dorothy noticed a familiar phrase that would pop up at the end of visits with close friends – “When will I see you again?” Dorothy sought professional advice on why these words had become so impactful to her. She realized that she had developed a fear of not knowing when she would see friends and loved ones again, and, in particular, not knowing if she had adequately conveyed how much she loved these people and how much they meant to her. One early Saturday morning, she awoke with the same words (“When will I see you again”) repeating in her head, and she instinctively began to write her song of the same name, despite never having written a song or a poem in her entire life.

“When Will I See You Again” is an upbeat tune, prominently featuring fiddle and vocals. It tells a tale of a life lived and loved, with each verse returning to the yearning for seeing a lost loved one again. The song is the first track of Dorothy’s CD of the same name, which features nine other tracks, all covers of various traditional fiddle tunes. The album cover for her CD features several pictures, each holding great importance for her.

“The history is in the cover of my CD,” Dorothy said. “I have always intended to write my autobiography, taking me back to my childhood life in the Valley, and a journey through my travels around the world.” The CD was produced by Summit

Dorothy credits Dave and Kathy Daw with the design work of the CD cover, both inside and out. She also credits Don Reed, who is the guest fiddle player playing the harmony for the fiddle tunes on the CD. Dorothy’s CD is now gaining much attention. It is selling for $20 per copy, with all net proceeds being donated to the Ottawa Heart Institute for research, since Gerald, his mother, and Dorothy’s father all had heart problems. Now, Dorothy is working with approximately a half dozen radio stations to get her music out into the world. She is booked for the World Summit for Women in Bangkok in June, with a booth booked to sell CDs. Further, the Ottawa Heart Institute has also offered to relay Gerald’s story – and a mention of Dorothy’s CD and a book she is writing – in its fall quarterly magazine.

It would appear that Dorothy has found her voice.

“There is no doubt in my mind Gerald sent Angels to take my hand and guide me through the most difficult time of my life,” a part of Dorothy’s CD cover reads.

the threats of pandemics, climate change, rising wealth inequality and unaffordable housing, we no longer have the luxury select leaders who are not willing to sacrifice for the greater good. We cannot accept leaders who look to divide us to keep power. We must work to unite, as working class citizens of one of most prosperous places on earth, to fight against greed and corruption that seeks to separate us.

My career is in commercial risk management. I am highly effective at analyzing data and planning to mitigate future losses. I see Ontario sleepwalking into a complete breakdown in average quality of life and I plan to get to work immediately to mitigate the damage.

My campaign will focus

on solutions to things we can mostly agree on; affordable housing, anti-corruption, environmental protection, lower cost of living, healthcare reform, improved education, senior care reform, equality and fairness for all. Most important is I will strive to understand all perspectives, and help others understand each other better.

I know what I am asking you to do is difficult. We have the current minister of housing and rural affairs, a seasoned politician with many years in power and ample opportunity to get things done, as our incumbent MPP. It would seem that our riding’s best chance at receiving the support we need would be to continue on this path. Please consider that the current housing crisis unfolded under our

current minister and MPP. In the private sector, if you fail at your main responsibility, you would get fired. It is time that we fire Mr. Clark.

I don’t often ask people for help. Today I am asking for your help. Please help me win the election so I can show you what a highly effective leader can do for our riding, and our province.

I am not running for fame or fortune. I am not running because it is easy. I am running because I am the best person for the job and it is the right thing to do.

Challenging the ongoing impacts of enfranchisement

by Doreen McKenzie, Councillor, Henvey Inlet First Nation Greetings! I am writing this article as a proud member and Councillor of the Henvey Inlet First Nation (HIFN). While I am currently a member of the HIFN Council and an active member of my community, for much of my life I was denied official recognition of my status as an “Indian.” Until I was in my 50s, I was denied entitlement to be registered as an Indian because, in 1929, my father made the difficult decision to accept “enfranchisement” in order to be able to vote in federal elections at the age of 22.

Many of you may be aware of the government’s enfranchisement policy, and the adverse effects that enfranchisement had for individuals who were subjected to this racist policy – but I have lived it. It was only in 1999 that, for the first time in my life, my Indian status was finally recognized by Canada.

Since then, I have returned to my community of Henvey

Inlet and have been actively involved in the life of my community, including as a member of Council. During my first term on Council from 2013 to 2015, my portfolio was Day Care, Health and Social. During my second term, from 2021 to 2023, I am currently responsible for our Lands portfolio. Prior to being elected as a Councillor, I worked as the Lands Assistant for four years.

I am writing this article today to make readers aware of a legal claim that I am working on, with the support of the Henvey Inlet Chief and Council, to force Canada to finally eliminate the ongoing discrimination suffered by people like me and my family, who continue to endure the discriminatory impacts that flow from enfranchisement. Because my father was enfranchised, although my Indian status has been reinstated, I have only been granted what is called 6(2) status and, as a result, cannot pass that status on to my children. Someone in the

exact same situation as I am in, who did not have a parent who was enfranchised, would be able to pass Indian status on to their children. This is fundamentally unfair! We believe that it is also contrary to s. 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and must be corrected.

We have successfully obtained some funding to help us pursue a legal claim aimed at finally eliminating this ongoing discrimination. We are working with Westaway Law Group, a law firm based out of Ottawa that specializes in Indigenous legal issues, to draft this claim and to pursue a legal remedy in court. While I feel that my own personal claim is strong, we are also hoping to identify other Anishinaabe people who may also be suffering the continuing impacts of enfranchisement.

Others have a parent or grandparent who was enfranchised and forced to give up their Indian status in order to vote, or to join the army, or to attend university. We would

like to be able to show the Court that the effects of this government policy are not restricted to a few people, but we hope to demonstrate that the government’s enfranchisement policy continues to have negative impacts on a large number of individuals from a variety of Anishinabek communities. Although this is an issue that impacts individuals and their families, it has also impacted our communities. I suspect that there are many individuals, like myself, who have been denied their Indian status and the opportunity to become active and contributing members of their First Nations. The ongoing effects of enfranchisement need to finally be challenged and brought to an end. We need to work together to ensure that all those who have been denied recognition as Anishinaabe due to Canada’s discriminatory policies finally get the recognition that they deserve.

Student fundraisers for Indigenous communities Upper Canada District School Board Student Senators are focused on change and improvement – not just for the school board, but within the community.

From April 1 to May 1, Student Senators are leading fundraising events at their schools to raise money for Green Iglu, a charity that works with Indigenous communities in Northern Ontario to help address food security and food sovereignty.

“This year’s Student Senate has made it evident that they wish to leave the world a better place than they found it.

With our combined goals and interests in mind, the Student Senate chose to dedicate the funds from this fundraiser to Indigenous communities in Canada,” explains Student Senate Vice-Chair and Student Trustee, Eshal Ali. “We recognize the challenges Indigenous communities continuously face and have faced, especially over the past year, and with our combined resources we aim to help them form a future in which they know they are always supApril 13, 2022

ported.”

Student Senators have set a $5,000 combined goal, with hopes of surpassing it.

Equally divided, that’s approximately $227 per school.

To give his fellow Senators incentive to roll out fundraisers at their schools, Student Senate Chair and Student Trustee, Bradford Ward, committed to taking a pie in the face if every school meets the per-school minimum.

“Our senators are all extremely passionate about changing the world around them for the better. That’s why we all joined Student Senate after all — to make a difference,” says Bradford.

“These fundraisers are a tangible way to do that, to truly help improve not just the lives of our fellow students, but rather the world around us.”

Director of Education Ron Ferguson, inspired by both the Student Senate’s commitment to helping those in their surrounding community and Ward’s promise to be “pied,” pledged $10 to each school to kick-start their fundraising efforts.

Yesterday, on my way down the stairs for my morning shower, I heard a tapping noise coming from the direction of our downstairs recreation room. What could it be - surely not the mice wearing shoes and having a party!? No, of course not! It was one of a fanatical pair of Robins hoping to get in to build a nest on the sunlit shelf of one of our basement windows.

He/she was tapping away at the glass and, despite me closing the blind, it just moved over to the downstairs office window and started again. Once again, shooing it away didn't stop it, and my wife and I kept disrupting it, to no avail, throughout the day. Talk about being tenacious: it didn't want to take the hint, which it must have, because the rain today seems to have dampened its ardour and we are living in peace again!

Despite all the distraction provided by the Robins, we were not ignored by our other birds, as they slowly come back into our lives, and Spring shows signs of joining us too. With the water now having thawed in the bird bath, the Robin took a quick splash, as did a returning male Brown-headed Cowbird.

These birds are not quite so welcome, due to their parasitic behaviour of laying their eggs in another birds nest, which are then reared by the unsuspecting host bird.

The Cowbird's eggs tend to hatch earlier than the host bird's, and it is able to dispose of the other fledglings as they hatch. Its propensity to do this is causing concern for the population numbers of quite a number of song birds.

On a more cheerful front, we witnessed today the return of a pair of Bluebirds, spotted in our garden a week ago, to have another look at our nesting boxes in the rain. Will they nest?

That remains to be seen, since they tend to have more than one nest, just to fool any of their predators, and us! Hopefully, they will choose us for their summer abode, as I hope many of your garden birds will for you. Have a great week enjoying the birds, but, above all else, stay safe and well.

The CECCE organized dynamic discussion panels to stimulate conversations about the values put forward in the new strategic plan: compassion, passion and engagement. The event also featured rich and varied entertainment showcasing the talents of CECCE students.

Over 3,000 members of the school community contributed to envisioning the CECCE of the future. Parents,

students, staff, trustees and partners participated in multiple rounds of consultations aimed at defining the board’s new vision, mission, values and strategic pillars for the next five years.

What does 175 acres actually mean?

According to the data presented in the 2016 Census of Agriculture from Statistics Canada, Ontario is losing an average of 175 acres of farmland to urban development every day. It is a sobering figure, but it does lead one to wonder what does 175 acres actually mean? In terms of actual area, it represents roughly the equivalent size of 32 city blocks, 135 football fields, 437 hockey rinks or 2,635 tennis courts. But it is so much more.

“175 acres is more than an area, more than a number,” says Peggy Brekveld, President of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA). “This is the land where we grow the food we eat, fibres for the clothes we wear, sources for fuel to power our vehicles and flowers to enjoy and brighten our days.”

So what can be grown on 175 acres?

• Grape growers typically yield about 2.64 tonnes of grapes per acre, which equates to 349,272 bottles of Ontario VQA wine.

• The average yield of winter wheat in Ontario in 2020 was 83 bushels per acre; over 175 acres, that is the equivalent of 653,625 boxes of bran cereal.

• More than 12.9 million apples can be plucked from a 175-acre orchard. That is enough for 3.2 million glasses of pure apple juice.

• It will yield enough fresh strawberries (more than 1.2 million pounds) to make 611,800 jars of strawberry jam.

• You can grow 8.3 million pounds of carrots on 175 acres, which is enough to make 2.6 carrot cakes for every family in Ontario.

Go all the way back to the 1996 Census of Agriculture, and Ontario has lost 1.5 million acres of farmland — or more than 200 acres per day.

“Whichever way you look at, it is an unsustainable hit to one of our most valuable, and finite, natural resources,” explains Peggy Brekveld.

“Domestic food production is vitally important to our communities. It ensures we can support ourselves no matter what is happening beyond our borders. Plus, it is fresh, healthy and affordable.”

Couple’s road name issue gets more complicated

by Brandon Mayer On March 16, the Times featured the story of local resident Dave Smith, who had concerns that the legal name of his road is unclear. He was worried that his road – Boundary Road, or South Gower Boundary Road, depending on who you ask – may be a puzzle to emergency services, since an ambulance took a while to reach a neighbour who needed one last year.

This is in addition to the less severe, but still inconvenient, problem of delivery companies having trouble finding Dave’s house. Before the publication of the original story, an employee of the Municipality of North Grenville responded to the Times’ request for comment, and gave the firm answer that the legal name of Dave’s road is simply “Boundary Road,” not “South Gower Boundary Road” as Dave believes.

Late last week, Dave’s wife, Trish, reached out to the Times to provide an update, which has made the story much more complicated. She revealed that her husband had contacted the City of Ottawa, asking for their take on the road name.

“And guess what their response was?” said Trish. “The official name of our street, according to Ottawa, is South Gower Boundary Road! So as the Boundary Road between North Grenville and Ottawa... North Grenville’s official name for our street is Boundary Road, and Ottawa’s official name is South Gower Boundary Road. So we officially have two names!”

Trish says that Dave contacted the Municipality of North Grenville by email to show them the response from the City of Ottawa, and that the Municipality was “shocked”. She also pointed out that she and her husband are not the only ones who are aware of the two road names.

“I've even spoken to the regular mailman for our road, and he said the post office is aware of the two different names of our road, and that half the houses on our road use one name and the other half use the other,” Trish said.

Now, with the conflicting responses from the two municipalities, Trish and Dave simply want the City of Ottawa and the Municipality of North Grenville to communicate and come up with a consistent road name, once and for all.

Southern Reuben Open Faced Sandwich

I have always been a fan of the classical Reuben sandwich, that delish – and deli – confection made up of ingredients from German cuisine. This recipe looks towards the South of the US for its inspiration, has a Savory Waffle base with Havarti cheese speckled with Jalapeños, while it nonetheless retains its original sauerkraut.

Savory Waffle base: Ingredients: 1 cup of all-purpose flour ½ cup of yellow cornmeal ¼ of cornstarch 1 teaspoon of baking powder ½ teaspoon of baking soda 1 teaspoon of black pepper 2 cups of buttermilk 2 large eggs 4 tablespoons of butter, melted If you wish, ¼ cup of shredded cheddar cheese Preparation: 1. In a mixing bowl, blend all of the dry ingredients together.

2. In a separate bowl, whisk the buttermilk and eggs together.

3. Combine the wet and dry ingredients together and stir in the melted butter.

4. Mix in the cheese (if you wish).

5. Cook with your waffle iron as usual.

To assemble the sandwich: 1. Place a waffle on a plate and place a slice of the Havarti cheese on top.

2. Place a half to one-inch layer of sauerkraut on top of the cheese.

3. Cover with a generous amount of piping hot sliced smoked meat (corned beef).

4. Place another slice of Havarti cheese on top of the smoked meat.

5. Microwave just long enough to warm the sauerkraut and melt the cheese.

For more sandwiches, just adjust your ingredients and make more waffles. Serve with a tankard of your favourite ale.

The restorative potential of the Ferguson Forestry Centre

by Philip Fry A reader recently wrote to me about her property, asking for suggestions about what might be done to clean, restore, and plant it. Here is how she described the site: “A very, very irregular lot, it was for years the municipal gravel pit. On its only straight side it has the old road, lined with a low wall of rocks. Neglected and unkept for years, at least 50; but may be not ecologically damaged, precisely because of this human neglect. Lots of holes, unsafe for humans and ponies. Lots of very large rocks, obviously extracted from the pit and left behind. Not a wetland, but lots of water.”

As I read the message, I felt uneasy, knowing that my response would be inadequate. The site, as so many others in our region, has great potential and begs for careful restoration, but the range of resources necessary to do the job with the necessary care is only partially available. There are private enterprises that can help with some aspects

Water Levels to increase again across the Rideau Valley Watershed The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority is continuing with a HIGH WATER SAFETY message for all areas. Although water levels and flows are now declining for most areas of the Rideau Valley Watershed, except for the lakes which are discussed below, the forecasted rain will cause water levels and flows to increase in the coming days.

Parks Canada staff who manage the water levels for the Rideau Canal are carefully watching the water levels in the Upper Watershed lakes. The water levels in the Upper Rideau and Big Rideau Lakes are high and declining but expected to level off and increase due to the large rainfall event. The water levels in Bobs and Christie lakes will continue to rise due to the recent rain.

Extreme caution should be exercised by everyone when near local waterbodies. Parents should inform their children of the risks and provide appropriate supervision. Pets should be leashed near all bodies of water. Please contact your municipality if you see any ice jams that are causing localized flooding.

This watershed conditions statement is in effect until April 21, 2022 at 5 PM. No further updates will be issued unless the forecast or conditions change.

of ecological restoration, and I hope they will be present at the upcoming Sustainability Fair in Kemptville on April 22; but, if we are to proceed with ecological remediation and biodiversity on the scale of our regional landscape, we will have to look to existing institutions and volunteers to ramp up our potential.

Let us begin with the Ferguson Forestry Centre, which has an outstanding record of providing inexpensive indigenous tree seedlings and saplings and for developing and overseeing its extensive mixed green spaces and woodlands open to the public.

Briefly, The Centre is a nonprofit corporation composed of two distinct units, the Ferguson Tree Nursery, and the management of the Ferguson Forest green spaces; both are under the guidance of a single board of directors. A volunteer group with its own board of directors and membership, The Friends of the Ferguson Forestry Centre, is mandated to raise funds and assist in the management of the public green spaces and woodlands, but does not participate directly in the work of the Tree Nursery. My pitch here is that an expansion of the Friend's mandate to include volunteer support the Tree Nursery would be of great benefit to all concerned.

The Tree Nursery is selffunding, and all profits from sales are directed to the Forestry Centre's green space program. While struggling with low income, staff shortages, and the need to improve the current staff's skill set, it has already expanded its activities to include a list of about 25 species of indigenous wildflowers, mostly sun-loving. The hope is that it will be able to develop a market by supplying plants to residents and local stores, assist restoration projects and agencies such as the Canadian Wildlife Federation.

But without strong assistance

from volunteers, this effort will remain very limited, because if woodland species are to be included, the operation will not be commercially viable.

Let us, for example, take the work required to plant out a mature White trillium.

Seed must be responsibly collected and documented from existing populations; the seed is hydrophilic, and therefore must remain moist and mould-free until planted.

Initial rooting takes place after a full winter, and the first seed leaf appears in the second year. For the next five or six years, as the seedling grows, it needs tending and re-potting. Losses occur along the way, reducing the total number of viable plants. In the seventh year, if all has gone well, the plant blooms. The work required is so long-term and labour intensive, that it is not commercially profitable. But it is ecologically necessary if our regenerating woodlands are to host trilliums. Unlike prairie flowers that let their seeds fly on the wind, woodland species depend largely on ants and other insects for dispersal. If we don't do it ourselves with viable plants, it won't happen. And that means we need to muster up many volunteers and secure a centre from which to operate.

Ah... the Tree Nursery.

Few findings cause women as much fear as discovering a breast lump and wonder if it’s cancer. But what about men who notice a mass and pain in the breast? Male breast lumps are not commonly discussed in the locker room.

But confusion and embarrassment can delay diagnosis of a malignancy.

Breast cancer is not entirely a woman’s disease.

Although it occurs in males in less than one percent of cases, diagnosis tends to be late. In 2022, of the 2,710 American men expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer, about 530 will die.

But male breast lumps are not always dangerous.

There’s a condition called “gynecomastia”, derived from the Greek root for female and “mastos” for breast. In fact, studies of King Tut’s mummy reveal that Egypt’s Boy King had enlarged breasts. About one third of males will eventually develop this condition!

What causes gynecomastia? Hormonal changes decreasing testosterone in relation to estrogen are at the root of the issue. Puberty can enlarge boy breasts, lasting one to two years. It’s also common in males between 50 and 70 years of age.

For these older men, a diagnosis of why hormones become imbalanced is not easy. Gynecomastia can be the result of a long list of medications, such as steroids, antibiotics, and anti-depressants.

Drugs for treating heart and stomach conditions, including ulcers, can trigger the problem. Too much or too little thyroid medication may be the cause. Recreational drugs can have a role as well.

The long list of possible causes doesn’t end here. For instance, obesity also increases estrogen levels and increases fatty material in the breast. Even an enlarged prostate gland and bacterial and fungal infections are listed causes of this condition. And

last, but not least, is aging.

Males who develop enlarged breasts face one difficult dilemma. That is, increased breast tissue is associated with the other sex.

Psychological distress is an unfortunate consequence for men who then try to hide the condition. But like it or not, they should not ignore breast lumps and must consult a doctor.

Faced with so many possible causes, what is a doctor going to do? The first step is to rule out the possibility of cancer. This done by two noninvasive procedures, a mammogram and an ultrasound examination of both breasts.

Both breasts are done because a malignancy could have spread to the other breast.

Regarding the psychology of gynecomastia, one male patient had this to say, “I found myself the only male sitting in a room occupied by women all waiting to have mammograms. It was an unusual experience. But I felt a connection with everyone in the room, all hoping to get the news there was no cancer found.”

How long will it take to get the results of these procedures? It depends on the facility that performs them.

Some fortunate patients will be referred to clinics where ultrasound technicians and radiologists immediately examine the tests and offer reports to patients before they leave – hopefully, with the diagnosis of gynecomastia, not cancer.

In some cases, gynecomastia becomes so pronounced that steps are taken to remove breast tissue. This can be done by either surgery or liposuction. But in most cases of swollen and tender breast tissue in men, confirmation that cancer is not detected is reassurance enough.

From there, the best treatment is patience while time and nature heal the problem.

The most important message for men and women alike? Screening for breast lumps saves lives. Don’t neglect to do it.

Annual Report offers glimpse into RVCA’s record-setting 2021

With another challenging year behind us, it’s clear the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority not only survived 2021, but thrived. The RVCA’s 2021 Annual Report is now available online. Despite continued disruption from the global pandemic, staff embarked on many special projects in 2021 that will continue into the coming year.

This included installing 11 new climate stations across the watershed to improve our flood and drought forecasting, particularly in the face of a changing climate, and completing draft hazard mapping studies for the Upper Jock River and Stevens Creek.

The RVCA kicked off an ambitious Watershed Report process to deliver a comprehensive snapshot of environmental conditions in the Rideau Valley, and drafted updates to our planning and development policies to better align with provincial legislation and local needs.

On top of this, RVCA staff continued to deliver our regular programs and services at record levels. In 2021, the RVCA welcomed 300,000

visitors to RVCA’s 11 conservation areas, up 50% over pre-pandemic numbers, and piloted a new virtual outdoor education program at Baxter Conservation Area, welcoming 1,612 students in partnership with the Ottawa Catholic School Board.

We planted 230,100 trees throughout the watershed, and completed 193 clean water projects and provided more than $478,000 in grants to rural farmers and landowners.

We naturalized 61 shoreline properties with 16,412 native trees and shrubs, distributing 1,440 free disease-tolerant butternut tree seedlings to landowners. Dozens of streams, rivers and lakes were sampled and surveyed for surface water quality, thanks in part to 13 community volunteers who filled lake sampling gaps created by COVID-19 limitations.

Enjoy the benefits of being outdoors by going for a hike, working in the garden or cleaning up leaf litter in the yard; but remember to be tick smart. While not all Black legged ticks in our area carry bacteria that cause Lyme disease, a significant number do, and you cannot tell if a tick is positive by looking at it. Taking the following precautions will help to reduce your risk: Dress in light coloured clothing so you can see that a tick is on you, (they are dark in colour).

Use an insect repellent containing DEET or Icaridin. You can apply this to clothing or your skin.

Put your outdoor clothes in a hot dryer for several minutes to kill ticks.

Rain barrels are $60 each and can be pre-ordered online at RainBarrel.ca/ngkscouting. Additional items are also available including discounted “ugly” barrels (only $45), composters, stands and more.

by Steve Gabell, LeedsGrenville-Thousand Islands & Rideau Lakes Green Party of Ontario On April 4, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released their working group III report on mitigation of climate change (available at ipcc.ch). The report is clear: without immediate and deep emissions reductions across all sectors, limiting global warming to 1.5C is beyond reach. Global warming above 1.5C will lead to increased heatwaves, droughts, floods, mass loss of animal and plant life, and increasing levels of food and water insecurity around the world. The UN SecretaryGeneral stated: “Climate activists are sometimes depicted as dangerous radicals. But the truly dangerous radicals are the countries that are increasing the production of fossil fuels. Investing in new fossil fuels is moral and economic madness.”

On the very same day as the IPCC report was released, Doug Ford was announcing a plan to reduce gas and fuel taxes by 11 cents per litre, and, just a few days later, the federal government

announced that they were approving the Bay du Nord oil project off the coast of Newfoundland, producing between 300 million and 800 million barrels of oil over the course of its life, starting from the middle of the decade. Yet IPCC reports are clear that global emissions need to peak before 2025, and be reduced by almost 50% by 2030.

And our big banks continue to fund fossil fuel projects.

Since the Paris agreement was signed in 2016, Canadian banks have funnelled a staggering $911 billion into coal, oil, and gas. RBC alone are the fifth biggest financiers of fossil fuel in the world, providing almost $50 billion of funding in 2021 alone.

Municipal, provincial, and federal governments should all be working to-

gether to help people transition away from fossil fuels, not trying to make it marginally cheaper to use them, or approving development of new fossil fuel extraction and infrastructure. Our banks should stop chasing short term profits from fossil fuels and should instead be funding investments in energy efficiency and renewables.

My daughter will be two years old this summer. I want her to have clean air and water, plentiful food, and a safe, peaceful world to live in. Our present course is not sustainable, and, in the words of the UN Secretary-General, we are currently being led by dangerous radicals who are performing acts of moral and economic madness. We need change, now.
