Last Sunday was just another example of this. Well-known artist, Don Munz, came up with the idea of donating a painting in order to raise money for Ursa Meyer’s much needed therapy. The amazing Oxford Mills Community Association agreed to take on the complexity of selling the raffle tickets and then distributing them to all the local shops which then went that extra mile in the

last week to get all the tickets sold. We had 600 raffle tickets and by Sunday they were all sold out. This is just one example of what we do here in North Grenville. Look at our Canada Day festivities.

The Downtown Community Association, undaunted by COVID, came up with a plan to make Canada Day here work while in many communities this just did not happen. There was a lot of work that went into that planning. Then we have Brian Foster from the waste management site who had

the idea of turning empty LCBO bottles into cash for a local group. And there are the volunteers who head to the transit site weekly to collect them. There’s the three local businesses donating to HOL to ensure kids have a meal.

While I know that we are all feeling the stress over COVID and its restrictions, not knowing what the future holds for us, we need to remember just how fortunate we are to live here in North Grenville. Let’s not take that for granted.

Thank you Don, thank you Brian, thank you to all the volunteers, the ones we hear about and the ones we don’t hear from. A special thank you to Judy Beveridge for keeping it all together for us.

Ursa has given much to this community through her fiddle playing, donating her time to help with fundraisers, and now we give back to her and say thanks for all the music and we look forward to her speedy recovery.

Limerick Forest Pandemic Ride for the Food Bank to be held September 20

It takes a village.

In 2019, the Eastern Ontario Horses of Course Club hosted the Limerick Forest Poker Ride and raised $4,000 for local food banks. Riders also donated 46 kilograms of non-perishable food at that event. This charity ride was inspired by Audrey Rooney’s annual Fall Poker Ride from which proceeds went to Make-a-Wish.

Well, 2020 has been a special year indeed and, with COVID anxiety, the horse club was hesitant to host the ride this year. The food bank has been stretched this year trying to help many families with out-of-work parents and can always use some help. The organizing committee, a group of three intrepid horse riders, refused to throw in the towel, and went looking for a new host. They found an unlikely but totally willing partner in the Johnstown ATV Club, whose members agreed wholeheartedly not only to host, but to help out with equipment, food and volunteers.

So the Limerick Forest Pandemic Ride 2020 will occur after all, with a slightly different name. It will take place on Sunday, September 20, at The Pit, also known as Area 1 of Limerick Forest South (located at 8773 Forsythe Road, North Augusta). Although the event will look slightly different, it will offer the same safe well-marked trails, the same quality t-shirt, and a delicious smoked ham lunch hot off the BBQ. Several local businesses have already stepped up with donations and prizes. Sabrina Tracey of Bytown Animal Chiropractic has offered an equine chiropractic treatment. Melissa Bayer has offered an equine massage from Bayer Hug Equine Therapy. Elite 3 Hemp Products has donated several bags of equine nutritional supplements. Brooks Performance Horse Feed has offered two $25 gift certificates. GT Enterprise has donated equine probiotics and electrolytes.

Green Hawk has offered a horse cooler, and Elegant Equine has offered a gift certificate for a blanket cleaning or repair, and other donations and prizes are on their way.

Volunteers have already come forward. Riders have been out to trim branches from the trails and they have had help from members of the Bytown Motorcycle Association. Geoff McVey, Forest Manager at Limerick Forest and his staff have always been supportive of this event and, through the Friends of Limerick Forest, the groups that share the trails have come together to ensure that everyone is safe.

Tim Hortons 2020 Smile Cookie Campaign to benefit the KDH Foundation Ingrid Kohling and Jose Salvador, owners of the two local Tim Hortons in Kemptville are proud supporters of the Kemptville District Hospital Foundation. They are also concerned community members feeling overwhelmed , like all of us, with the realities of living through a pandemic.

“We are all doing the best we can to take care of family, friends and community. The Smile Cookie Campaign is a great way for Tim’s and the community to come together in support of the Foundation”, says Ingrid Kohling.

Funds raised through the 2020 Smile Cookie Campaign will go to support the development of new Children’s Mental Health Services in North Grenville. Last year’s campaign raised over $10,000 for the cause.

“We are so grateful to Ingrid and Jose for once again supporting the Foundation through the Smile Cookie Campaign. In these truly challenging times, it is wonderful to have the support of local businesses”, says Margret Norenberg, Chair, Kemptville District Hospital Foundation.

Requiem for the New Horizons Club

by Shirley Price in 1982, a group of retired persons living in the Burritts Rapids village and area decided to start a club for seniors to meet in the Burritts Rapids community hall. They successfully applied for a New Horizons for Seniors grant from the federal government. The funds were used to purchase tables and chairs and other amenities for the hall and they formed “The Burritts Rapids New Horizons Club for Seniors” with its own constitution and by-laws and which met every second and fourth Wednesday of each month from September to June.

Over the years, the Club grew from fewer than a dozen members to a high of over 100. The first President of the New Horizon Club was Jack Pinder-Moss. Our current membership includes lLorraine Maccraken, the longest serving member of the Club, who served two terms as President and took on many other jobs over the years. Joyce Mckay, one of the founding members, who passed away three years ago, was President twice as well

as serving in other capacities throughout her years with the Club.

The objects of the Club, according to the constitution, were to further the happiness and dignity of its members and to promote and sponsor, in the name of the Club, such activities as may be proposed and approved by its members.

Over the thirty-eight years, the various executive committees elected by members have worked hard to plan and organize a variety of activities for members to enjoy such as pot luck lunches, celebrations of special events throughout the year including Oktoberfest, Christmas, St. Andrew’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, pancake lunches, theatre trips, speakers on a variety of topics, contests, dancers, and the annual variety show begun 24 years ago with jokes, readings, songs, music, and dances, all by members.

The current executive and officers are Shirley Price, President, Janet Glaves, Vice President and Public Relations Officer, Jean Travers, Treasurer, Ruby Schryburt, Secretary, Golida Tym, Chair of Programme Committee,

members at large Susan Ewing, Rhoda Macinnis, and Grayce Muir. Special committee chairs are: Good Cheer, Moira Anderson; Karen Wattie, Email Coordinator, and Telephone Committee Golida Tym and Eleanor Muscoft.

Unfortunately, membership has been declining and it became more difficult to attract what we “older seniors” call “younger seniors”. There are fewer members who feel that that they are able and willing to take on the jobs of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Programme Officer and other roles needed to keep a club like the New Horizons Club active and on-going. For that reason, it was necessary to dissolve the Club as of August 31, 2020, the end of the fiscal year.

For those of us who have been active members for many years, it is a loss of the opportunity to gather and socialize regularly with friends and a loss of the opportunity to make new friends.

New Horizons Club, we will miss you.

Robert says he felt drawn to support Operation Backpack because of his own experience growing up in a very poor family.

“I remember having to collect bags of carrots that were half spoiled from a wholesaler,” he said. “We always had food on the table; but it was minimal.

When Operation Backpack came into my awareness last year, it was like – I’m supporting this.”

Cathy says they are extremely grateful for the donation to HOL’s Backpack program, especially

because they are expecting to see the need rise in the coming months. “Feed Ontario is anticipating that by the spring, there will be a surge in food bank recipients,” she says. They also have some concerns that if schools aren’t offering breakfast and nutrition programs this year, they might see an increased need in the fall and through the winter.

“Families are in need and we have concerns that, with the pandemic, there may be greater needs in the next three to six months, so we’re very happy to receive these funds”.

Question

by David Shanahan I think this week we could have published an issue with nothing but articles, letters and posts about the proposed jail in “Greater Ottawa”. It is a subject that will be around for quite some time think.

But in the midst of all the angst, trauma, concern, hope and expectation, all of it quite legitimate, the fact is that we don’t really know enough of what’s being proposed. How can we decide what’s good and bad, when the main questions are yet to be answered?

Well, whatever the Province thinks the public consultation will be like, it seems very clear that the people of North Grenville will have quite a lot to say to whoever is given the unenviable job of coming here to ask our opinions. Most of the responses we have received here at The Times, both in Letters to the Editor, articles,

and social media posts, have been negative. However, I am told by those who know that the members of Council have found their correspondents to be fairly equally divided on the subject and this would appear to be confirmed by the survey results detailed in a letter to the editor published this week.

Until we get some official information about what kind of correctional facility is being planned, who the inmates will be, what level of security is involved, it is difficult to discuss those aspects in any meaningful way. But there are certainly questions that might be asked now about the “Greater Ottawa Correctional Complex”.

For example, that name: Greater Ottawa Correctional Complex? This is one of the aspects of the story that has upset people here. Is Kemptville suddenly part of a Greater Ottawa Area, a GOA?

When did that happen? Is the jail the first step in a new move towards amalgamation? It was after all another Conservative government in Queen’s Park that was inspired to deliver the last round of municipal amalgamations in 1997-98. If that is not the plan, why not call it the North Grenville Correctional Complex, and make sure visitors and potential residents know where they’re coming to?

From my point of view, an even more fascinating question is: why here? The Province owns land all over the map, and a location adjacent to schools, daycare centres, a hospital and a small town seems a rather odd choice. The thought occurs to me that the Ford regime believes that this is such a safe Tory seat that it can get away with imposing a jail here, a potentially damaging move to its support base, and still retain the loyalty of enough

voters to hold onto the seat.

Perhaps it is depending on the personal popularity of Steve Clark to overcome whatever anger or disillusion might be experienced by residents.

But we will have to wait to get some answers to these questions. We hope to have some input from Steve Clark in next week’s issue, and it wil be interesting to hear from him about how and why Kemptville was chosen for this distinction and where the Greater Ottawa tag came from. Because Steve Clark knows this municipality very well indeed. He is well-liked (or has been up to now) and understands how important the Kemptville Campus project is to this community. It would be amazing if he did anything that would compromise the success of that facility or the recent efforts to promote tourism in North Grenville.

Over and over again, it

has been emphasised that this is a great place to live.

Our friends and neighbours care about the place, they get involved in community events and voluntary organisations and support each other in so many initiatives and causes. In this very issue of the Times, we see reports about the fundraising success to support Ursa Meyer after her stroke. We see a young entrepreneur creating a local business in the middle of a pandemic. There’s a story about a couple from Egypt who chose Kemptville as a place to open a pharmacy and lay down roots for a new life as members of this community. We see Cancer Kicking Cousins, other Neon Night activities, businesses raising funds for local food banks, as well as the Limerick Forest Pandemic Ride. And there’s so much more that we report week after week that shows how much the

people of North Grenville care about their community and its future.

This is a community that treasures what has been built up over many generations.

I sincerely hope that Doug Ford, Steve Clark, and Solicitor General Sylvia Jones have taken this into account when they decided to build their jail here without even the decency to inform our local representatives on Council about what was heading this way. I imagine that when they do decide to consult us some time in the fall, that they are prepared to face serious interrogation and well-researched arguments because that is what we do. It’s not enough to tell us what you’re going to do here. You’d better have a really good argument to back it up. We’ll be waiting.

I think in this matter I am like-minded with Jim Bertram, surprisingly. Kemptville will become a tourist delight. People will travel from far and away to see our new “Jail Town”. I find the idea of a correctional facility being built so close to where I live and also to the hospital and various schools very depressing, as if these times of COVID are not bad enough; but at least it helps to see the letters in the North Grenville Times.

by Jim Bertram, and also his article, speak well for how I feel. I also appreciated Stephen Hammond’s and Victor Jarjour’s take on the situation. As Mr. Bertram states, I believe this is more likely to drive businesses away. I feel certain that my real estate value will go down because of the proximity.

I would hope that this could all be turned around, but I’m doubting it. Guess who won’t be getting my vote

next time around. Not that they would anyway.

How will parents feel about sending their children to school on campus? How will women feel about biking along the treed rail trail when it emerges onto a road only metres from the entrance to the prison? How will tourists and visitors feel about attending an outdoor music festival or educational programming?

Here is our reality today: a worldwide pandemic, health and education systems severely strained as a result, an unprecedented need for government spending to support individuals, families,

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, NOT IMPRESSED with the Minister's Announcement on Dental Care for Seniors [NG Times, September 9] Premier Ford can announce all the dental help for seniors he wants. An income of $19,300 for single seniors means that they are living in poverty, and these are the taxpayers who contributed to those pensions and believed the promises of fair returns.

Nearly 15% of elderly seniors live in poverty. They built this country, and they are in this position because they did not work for employers who provided pension plans, yet they represent the majority of Canadians today (56%).

Take a look at how many seniors it will really help - it’s a very low number, as the cut off of $19,300 excludes some of our most vulnerable seniors. For many years, we have received applications from seniors, other groups on behalf of seniors, and members of our community who are not part of the North Grenville Community Service Council (NGCSC) asking us for help, as we are their last

hope. Their average income is below the cost they need to survive, and in most cases, is above the $19,300, but not by much. Your limit excludes these vulnerable seniors.

This new press release leaves most seniors out AGAIN. The average senior’s income, including OAS, GIS and CPP is around $22,000.

Rents now start at $1000/ month, and if you want decent housing, much more. If we look at annual basic living costs for a senior, rent is $12,000, utilities are $4,200, metered water costs are $900, car and tenant insurance can be as much as $2,760 a year, and fuel and medications average out to $960 a year, which comes to a total of $20,820 a year. This does not leave a whole lot of money for groceries and day to day items. Emergency dental care, a phone, and the internet are luxuries. Each month, more seniors use local Food Banks to survive, or to buy basic items of clothing, and many apply to service groups for help. Dear Editor, In reference to your article “Jailhouse Blues”, I am one Kemptville resident who is upset with this news. I actually found it shocking when I heard it by way of news on television. The main campus at the College is filled with children, except not now during the COVID crisis. Also in this campus is a child care centre; on Concession Road, not so far away, is another, and two more schools. The proximity of a Correctional Complex so close does not sound reasonable to me. Thank you, David, for explaining this to us, since no one else bothered.

I was, in fact, ready to blame the municipal government until I read your story.

Dear Editor, Regarding the provincial government’s planned Greater Ottawa Correctional Complex for Kemptville (North Grenville Times, September 2, 2020), I believe the expression, “three strikes and you’re out” fits the bill: wrong location, wrong time, wrong plan.

The municipally-owned Kemptville Campus is a jewel in the Municipality of North Grenville. Mature trees, green expanse, trails, sports facilities, and architecturally inspiring buildings – the list goes on. No surprise then that the site has attracted schools, a day care centre, and small businesses to its tranquil setting. Bicyclists and pedestrians can enter the area from its east or west side via the rail trail – another jewel.

Enter a maximum-security prison to be built on existing farmland. “Correctional complex” sounds softer perhaps, but the provincial

and businesses, increasing awareness of the disparities between rich and poor, an epidemic of drug overdose deaths, enhanced recognition of the huge gap in mental health services across the province, and a heightened awareness of the systemic racism that exists within our institutions, including within policing and the judicial system.

Is this the time to invest hundreds of millions of dollars into a correctional complex in Kemptville to increase the number of jail cells in the

Province?

Most harmful is the ethos that lies behind the government’s plans to “modernize” the correctional system.

Building more jails means building more capacity to incarcerate people at a time when the focus should be on the root causes that lead to crime. Proponents of the plan will argue that building new, larger facilities will improve conditions for inmates, but the new provincial jails in Toronto and Edmonton have proven otherwise. The correctional system is broken – we

continue to incarcerate Indigenous and Black men and women at rates significantly disproportionate to their population numbers. We jail non-violent offenders, drug users, and individuals requiring mental health treatment.

Since COVID-19, thousands of inmates have been released from jails with no corresponding increases in crime. Violent crime is at near-historic lows.

The provincial government pays almost $80,000 per year (fiscal year 2015/16) to house a single inmate, including the large percentage of

individuals who are pre-trial and awaiting court dates. It is critical to ask how that money could be better spent as we grapple with the worst pandemic in 100 years, and address the negative economic, social and health outcomes that have resulted from it.

A “fait accompli”? It will be up to the residents of North Grenville to write a different ending.

Dear Editor, There is already no shortage of views on the proposed correctional facility for Kemptville. In the absence of detailed information, people tend to fill-inthe-blanks using what they hear, or already believe to be the case. In this context, I put up an online survey for a week to try and get a more collective sense of what people think. Almost 200 people participated.

Are people in favour of the proposed facility?

Overall the split was fairly even, with 40% for, and against, and 20% not sure yet. However, when considering people’s views based on where they live, 60% of those who live within 1 km were against it, whereas in the rest of North Grenville

those against numbered only 35%.

Do people’s views change if there are going to be economic benefits to the municipality? Yes; support rose by almost 15%, to 56.5%. There was not a big drop in those against which fell by only 5% to 33%. The majority (almost 51%) felt there would not be a risk to residents. Nevertheless, a little over one-third did express a concern in this regard.

44% of respondents thought property values would decline, while 25% thought they would go up.

The Province has stated that consultations will be undertaken in the future. There was a significant degree of cynicism on this point, with over half of respondents saying that it does not matter

what the community thinks.

Yet only 2% said they were not interested enough to participate, while almost half said they wanted to learn more about the proposal and look forward to participating.

So what to take from all this?

The (online) community is engaged and eager for more information. The greatest concerns are expressed by those living closest, though those who use Kemptville Campus might join that group (and that could be examined in a follow-up survey in the future).

The Province has to do some catch-up in the area of trust, as the announcement caught people off guard, including the municipal Council. Lots of information is being shared among residents

like stories about the Burritts Rapids correctional facility, closed over 20 years ago.

The land is the Province’s, but how will it be serviced?

Kemptville is short of water and waste treatment. Does the proposed facility get in at the back of the line? Kingston seems to have done well for itself, notwithstanding over a century of housing some of Canada’s worst criminals (a much different client than who ends up in a provincial jail).

Keep an open mind, participate, and make an effort to understand the views of others.

North Grenville approves site plan for new long-term care facility

North Grenville Council has authorized the execution of the site plan for the expansion of Bayfield Manor to include 94 new long-term care beds.

This is the result of an announcement made in March of last year that the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care was investing in the additional beds in North Grenville to help seniors receive the care they need close to home. “We are pleased to be able to not only maintain long-term care in Kemptville, but through the support of MPP Steve Clark and the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care, expand our capacity by an additional 94 beds,” said Southbridge Care Homes’ Managing Director Keith McIntosh at the time. “These 160 total beds will continue Sept.16, 2020

our commitment to providing consistent quality health care for Kemptville seniors both now and into the future.”

The new facility will be a three-storey building located right next to Bayfield Manor. The site plan includes two entrances, one for residents and visitors off George Street, and another for staff and deliveries off Queen Street. It also stipulates that Southbridge will be responsible for funding the construction of a sidewalk along George Street, from Dumbrille Street to Pine Hill Road, and that it is also responsible for upgrading part of Queen Street, which is currently unpaved, to accommodate the increase in traffic due to the new facility.

“At this point, staff and the developer have addressed all the engineering requirements and are ready to move forward with finalizing the site plan

agreement,” said Acting Director of Planning and Development Amy Martin at the planning meeting on September 9.

The plan is to move all of Bayfield’s long-term care beds into the new facility and renovate Bayfield to accommodate retirement living residents. Director Martin said at the meeting that it is her understanding that Southbridge is currently tendering for the project and that construction could start in the spring. Although Southbridge is responsible for covering the cost of the sidewalk along its property, the Municipality will be carrying out the work which is estimated to get underway in the next three to five years.

Mayor Peckford expressed some concern about the construction of the sidewalk not lining up with the completion of the new facility. “I would hope that in our municipality we

would have a commitment to align the construction of the sidewalk with the erection of the building,” she said.

Mayor Peckford also commented that she hopes that there is some foresight into lighting the area to make it safe for the increased traffic due to the new facility. She said tht in the past she had noticed ihat North Grenville has sometimes been left with the consequences of a major development, having to adjust retroactively to make the surrounding area safe for increased traffic.

“I think to that end, from a road safety perspective, I would like due consideration of ample lighting to the degree that we are being respectful of residents and others just because I think there will be significantly more activity than there already is,” she said.

Open letter to Steve Clark, MPP After spending years in insipid, grey, unfriendly, devoid of any character and savagely developing/overcrowded Kanata, I thought this is it! We found our place, we found home! Well, while I was busy pinching myself on a daily basis to make sure I was not dreaming, I had not counted on your decision.

A correctional complex, on beautiful farm/forest land right in the middle of Kemptville, in front of my daughters' schools and daycare. Wait until I tell Dilan and Billie that they will still see natural beauty behind their schools by way of the forest (unless council decides to "develop" that as well...) but that they will be staring at the ugliness of mankind in front.

Well, cutting trees, scrapping fields and laying kilometers of asphalt, high metal fencing and turrets should teach them a lesson on what it means to pave paradise to put up a parking lot. But do not worry, those are not serious offenders, only men who beat their wives and kids, people who sell and/or use drugs and drive while intoxicated.

And people who are kept in custody while awaiting trial... which only happens in the worst of circumstances nowadays.

It will bring massive traffic in and around the Campus, or wherever entrances will be located (from visitors to the centre and constant transport of detainees to courthouses, medical specialists, and other criminal justice infrastructure that does not exist locally), which will have a disproportionate effect on the community who lives and drives in

and Quebec. And, while it may generate some temporary business for local contractors and tradespersons, as with any large-scale government construction project and maintenance, there will be contracts awarded to large companies who will bring in workers from elsewhere, so you should not portray it publicly as manna from heaven for local people.

Some of my fellow North Grenville citizens are concerned about the value of their properties going down. To me, losing money at that point would really just be adding insult to injury. I care about something else. Having to move, uproot my daughters, give up on a beautiful place and community, as well as my first/forever dream home is what is at stake as a result of your decision for the "development" of North Grenville.

It is my life and that of my daughters that is affected as a result of your actions.

Maybe I am naive, but this all came as a shock. You are elected by people you do not represent. You decide to use provincial taxes in a way that degrades North Grenville's environment and quality of life behind closed doors. When you spring it up as a fait accompli by way of the media, and we learn about it at the same time as everyone else, you expect us to embrace your decisions as "development" and "growth".

I do not. And I will keep that in mind when it comes time to exercise the choices I do have.

Have you noticed that municipalities who are set up to serve judiciarized clienteles have their own police services? Brockville, Kingston, Ottawa, Toronto for instance?

I assume for flexibility, staffing, cost control and other such reasons; but, while I have been working in the public safety portfolio for some years, I do not pretend to be an expert, so I suggest you look into it if this is the direction you are taking. Or, at the very minimum, have regards to the community's safety and prevent/manage a potential increase in "petty" crimes. And while I do not want to get paranoid about more direct potential public safety risks like escapes from the complex/in transport/at the hospital, I can say based on professional experience that they occur more often than we read about in the media, for obvious reasons.

At any rate, speaking as a woman living alone in a rural and largely unpatrolled area with a small child and a teenage girl, the safety and quality of life I enjoy right now is paramount and it has no price.

With respect to the argument brandished about that it will create a few hundred jobs, we know the truth. In practice, it will mean very little for the residents of North Grenville. It would not translate into 500 residents getting jobs. Correctional Services positions being public service jobs, there would be a number of internal transfers and promotions to staff them, as well as qualified people hired from elsewhere in Ontario

Highlights from the UCDSB Trustees meeting Trustees with the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) met virtually on Wednesday, September 9, for their first regular board meeting of the 2020-2021 school year. Trustees conducted the meeting in person at the Brockville Board Office, with the option for Trustees to call in, as is the usual practice.

Swearing in of 2020-2021 Student Trustees: Student Trustees Tain Hughes from Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute and Jordan Evans from Tagwi Secondary School publicly signed and verbally stated their declaration and oath of allegiance. The documents Sept. 16, 2020

Student Trustee Hughes will serve as the Chair of UCDSB Student Senate Meetings and Trustee Evans will serve as Vice-Chair.

Their roles are equal, and they will share responsibilities in all areas in their new position as board members.

This is the first year that the UCDSB has more than one Student Trustee, following direction from the Ministry of Ontario that “the board shall have at least two but not more than three student trustees.”

by Veronique Roy I am a 42 year-old resident of North Grenville. I am also a homeowner, taxpayer and voter. I will tell you a short story. While you may not care about it personally, you do as politicians who purportedly represent me.

A little over a year ago, my dream of home ownership came true. As a single parent to 15 and 5 year old girls, this was the culmination of many years of hoping, trying, planning, sweating and searching. So I found my dream country home, a small, cozy cottage-like house surrounded by land, a small barn and trees, in Oxford Mills. The neighborhood is beautiful, quiet, peaceful, green, the air always smells fresh and my neighbours are friendly, kind and quiet. This is, I hope, my forever home.

And I am quite proud that I was able to buy it all by and for myself and my daughters.

Not only that, I was able to register my daughters in French schools (as well as daycare for the little one) on the Kemptville Campus.

I could not believe my luck that not only could I get my daughters educated in French here in North Grenville, but that it would be in such pristine, inspiring settings. In fact, my youngest daughter has what the school calls "forest school", where the class goes to play and learn in the forest on a weekly basis.

Needless to say, not every elementary school kid out there gets to experience nature like this. And my eldest daughter's highschool has some specialized environmentrelated courses.

Burritts Rapids and a problem in history and surrounding lands and who first identified the South Branch River and the potential mill sites at what would become Burritts Rapids and Merrickville.

The family’s loyalism was even expressed in the names given to the children.

John Strachan French himself was named for Bishop John Strachan, a fervent loyalist clergyman who had educated most of the leading men of Upper Canada in his school in Cornwall. One of French’s sons was named after Guy Carleton, later Lord Dorchester, who had organised the evacuation of 30,000 Loyalists from New York in 1783.

Dorchester was Governor General of Canada in the 1780's.

The accepted story of John S. French is that he bought lot 1 on the west side of Grenville Street in Burritts Rapids in 1841, later building a saw mill between his house and the river. The official Walking Tour of Burritts Rapids says that he built the Community Hall as a store and owned a grist mill and shingle mill as well, all locat-

by David Shanahan In order to write history, historians need reliable sources. Unless you have information, dependable and supported by documents, letters, diaries, maps or whatever, it is impossible to know what happened in the past.

Those sources need to be reliable and credible, because so much that is recorded or

remembered is not necessarily accurate. Memories play tricks. People write and record what they consider important, worth remembering, or else they record from a particular point of view. The historian needs to be able to sift the evidence and find out, as nearly as possible, what really happened.

turns, land title records, etc.

But what does the poor historian do when these same records contradict each other?

How do you choose between opposing accounts? A good example of this dilemma is found in the story of John Strachan French and his family in Burritts Rapids.

John Strachan French came to Burritts Rapids in 1841 along with his wife, Mary Ann, and their three young sons. A daughter was born a year after they arrived in the hamlet. John came from a prominent Loyalist family who had settled near Cornwall after the American Revolution. His grandfather, Jeremiah French, was a Lieutenant in the King’s Royal Regiment of New York where he served for seven years.

Jeremiah’s brother, Gershon, was a Lieutenant in Jessup’s Corp, the official who first reconnoitered the Rideau River

ed on what is called the Mill Lot across the road from his house. French was a leading member of Burritts Rapids society, and was appointed a Magistrate for Oxford-onRideau Township by 1847.

The 1851 Census records that French owned a grist mill worth £1,000 [$4,000], employing four people, a shingle factory worth £350 [$1,400] employing ten people, and a saw mill worth £150 [$600].

A Directory of Businesses in Burritts Rapids in 1851 lists John S. French as owning “grist oatmeal, saw and shingle mills”. Published sources say that he bought the Mill Lot from Terrance Smyth, father of the founder of Smith’s Falls, in 1840. He then sold his milling interests around 1867 to Tom Black. However, as the same publication points out, John S. French died in 1858, so he was not around in 1867 to sell anything.

In fact, French died suddenly, it seems, without leaving a will, and with a lot of debts. His widow Mary Ann was left to calculate the total worth of his assets which she claimed was around £3,000.

All of his property, including lots on East Street in Burritts Rapids which contained a tannery, were seized to pay his debts. Mary Ann remained in their home until she died in 1867 and is buried beside John in the Anglican cemetery in Burritts Rapids.

This would seem to be a fairly straightforward account of the life and times of John French except for a few rather strange wrinkles. The Census of 1851 is quite clear about the assets owned by him and the various publications and information handed down over time provide us with the story as related above. However, other equally official records, specifically the Land Title records which show who owned which property and when, seem to contradict what we think we know about John Strachan French. Which records do we believe and rely on to write his history?

Government spending - A Canadian national threat?

by Willem Van Dam In 1975, the federal debt (accumulation of annual deficits) was $22 billion under Pierre Trudeau and was increasing rapidly during his reign. Deficit financing began in earnest during this time as Keynesian economic management theory gained ascendancy. In the intervening years (1975-2020), the Liberals were in power for approximately 30 years, and the Conservatives for 15 years.

In 2019, the debt had risen to $685 billion and is estimated to hit $757 billion by the end of 2020 (this estimate was revised due to COVID and is now estimated to reach $1.2 trillion). The Canadian population has increased by 63.7% (23,059,265 to 37,742,154) from 1975-2020, whereas the debt has risen 3,013% based on the 2019 value. If the 2020 estimate (before COVID) is correct ,the debt will rise

3,340%.

In 1975, total federal income was $32.441 billion under John Turner as Finance Minister and reached $332.2 billion by 2018-2019. The actual federal income has increased by $299.76 billion or 924%. The federal income increase is almost equivalent to the rise in Canadian GDP growth in percentage terms.

In 1975, Canadian GDP was $173.8 billion (US), in 2019 it was $1.741 trillion (US), a 10-fold increase. The federal debt growth in this same period was 3013%. The GDP growth has been outstripped by the debt growth to 2019 by 3.34 times. During this time, government has taken in more actual dollars in income, has spent all of that, and has added ever increasing debt as well. Can that be a good thing?

The Ontario addiction with debt has been similar to

According to CRA data for 2016, 27.5 million people filed a tax return and 9.1 million of those paid no federal income tax. That leaves 18.4 million tax filers who paid all federal and provincial income tax. If it was estimated that the federal debt would have to be paid by tax payers who actually pay federal income tax, it comes to $41,141 per tax payer for the national debt. Provincial debt would be added to that. Bear in mind, these costs are only for debt. They do not include what individuals are already paying for taxes and charges for services.

There was a time when corporate taxes helped to cover a greater portion of tax owing. In 1981, the “all time high” corporate tax rate was 50.9% on net earnings. By

Mike Harris attempted to reduce Ontario’s debt, but actually increased it from $90.7 billion in 1994-1995 to $132.6 billion in 2002-2003, even while cutting government services. Only with Paul Martin as Finance Minister, did the federal Liberals decrease the national debt to GDP ratio, as well as deal with the financial issues associated with CPP and EI. According to the Fraser Institute, the only time that the federal debt has decreased is between 1998-2007 by around $90 billion. 19751998 saw a meteoric rise in national debt, followed by the Paul Martin era, and another meteoric rise after 2007.

At present, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation calculates the national debt per person at $20,218 and provincial debt at $24,533, for a total debt burden of $44,751 per person. So, if you have a

2020 it had been reduced to 26.5%.

At this time, the Ontario debt is the 4th largest expenditure of the government, trailing education, health care and social services. In 2019-2020, the interest on the debt cost $13.3 billion.

For the national debt, the interest was $29.5 billion, but the actual debt figures do not include civil service pension obligations, CPP obligations, national bank guarantees (loans to others underwritten by the government such that, if the borrower defaults, the government must make the payments (like a loan cosigner).

As every nation loads itself with debt, personal freedom will likely suffer.

Interest rates must be kept low in order to allow government, business, and private individuals to pay the “carrying charges” of debt and be

encouraged to “spend more” in order to keep the economy going. Governments at all levels justify the debt by indicating that “relative to GDP, the debt is not so bad…. we can handle it”. They never speak of the exponential rise of debt relative to the population available to pay the debt.

We have examined Canada’s debt issue as it has grown over the last 45 years, just over the working life span of one man. Another working life span of the same length may lead to greater economic degradation, leaving the citizen as a debt slave (or taxation slave) to the government.

Adam Smith wrote: “The practice of funding (i.e. deficit spending) has gradually enfeebled every state which has adopted it” and that bankruptcy was always the end of great accumulations of debt.

Extra funding announced for FASD support

by David Shanahan FASD is a brain injury that can occur when an unborn baby is exposed to alcohol.

It’s a lifelong disorder with effects that include physical, mental, behavioural and learning disabilities. These can vary from mild to severe. It is the leading known cause of preventable developmental disability in Canada.

The number of people who have FASD is not known in Canada nor anywhere else in the world. This is because FASD is difficult to diagnose and also because it often goes undiagnosed.

However, based on a study conducted n 2018, an estimated 3% of children in Toronto have FASD which translates to 1.1 Million people in Canada. More recent studies from the US and other Western European countries of first grade students estimate that between 2 to 5% have FASD. The Ontario Government has announced that they will be providing an additional $3 million annually, in addition to existing funding supports, in a campaign to “raise awareness, better coordinate services and expand and enhance supports for children and families impacted by FASD”, according to Todd Smith, Minister of Children, Community and Social Services. The announcement was made on International FASD Awareness Day on Sept. 16, 2020

"This additional funding is part of our government's ongoing commitment to support children and youth with special needs," said Minister Smith. "We heard from advocates, families and caregivers looking for more help with the day-to-day challenges of supporting children with FASD. These initiatives will not only help to end the stigma of this disorder but raise awareness and empower families as they care for loved ones."

The government’s plan is to use the extra $3 million to hire an additional 26 FASD support workers through special needs coordinating agencies. FASD workers provide information, develop care plans and connect parents to resources, and support networks and diagnostic services.

The funds will also provide for what are called family capacity-building workshops, where families can learn helpful and practical skills to support their children. There will also be training for service providers to educate them about FASD and how they can help families dealing with the disability. This will also provide additional support for families, as well as educating the general public about FASD and what it involves.

Robert More heads a Rural FASD Support Network which has been operating in the region for the past few

years. Robert welcomed the additional funds, not just for what they will provide in the way of support, but also because it shows the Ontario Government’s growing awareness of the need for such support.

“These initiatives demonstrate the government's recognition that additional support is needed to help individuals with FASD and their caregivers reach their true potential. We are particularly excited about their commitment to have a longterm marketing campaign to help bring awareness about FASD, their invitation to all stakeholders particularly in health to collaborate in establishing long-term solutions, the increase in direct support through additional support workers and Indigenous nutrition programs and their direct recognition of the key role support group provide within this collaboration”, Robert told the Times. “It is clear they listened to what stakeholders were saying in the consultation meetings and implemented key, evidence-based measures.

We look forward to using these additional measures to continue having a positive impact in the county of Leeds-Grenville”.

September Road Safety Theme: Back to School Safety As students begin another school year, the North Grenville Road Safety Committee is reminding everyone to be safe as they travel to and from school – whether it be by active travel (walk or bike), or by car or bus.

Motorists should be prepared to slow down and stop for children and school buses.

As more kids will be walking and riding their bikes to school, motorists should be watching for children, particularly at road crossings.

School Zones and Community Safety Zones: Slowdown in school zones and be extra cautious. Motorists should watch for Community Safety Zones, where fines are doubled if caught speeding.

Community Safety Zones are clearly marked with road signs and are located along Country Road 44, Concession Road and Clothier Street.

Safe Walking Route Maps: With more parents choosing to drive their children to school, drop off and pick up may be more hectic.

The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark Public Health Unit along with their active school

travel partners developed safe walking route maps families can use. If it isn’t feasible to walk the entire way, consider parking a block or two away from the school and walk the rest of the way. This will help relieve traffic and is a great way to be active.

Ursa Meyer continues on road to recovery

The North Grenville community has been rallying around twenty-year-old Ursa Meyer for the last few months after she suffered a sudden stroke at the end of May. She is now out of the hospital, living in Ottawa with her boyfriend and his family and participating fully in the rehabilitation process.

Ursa says she doesn’t remember much about the days following her stroke.

One of her first memories was being moved to the fifth floor of the Ottawa Civic Hospital Campus and waking up to realize that she couldn’t move her right arm or leg. The severity of her stroke and the side effects still didn’t sink in until she was at Élisabeth Bruyère Hospital. “It kind of came in stages for me,” she says. “There was me being aware of how I was now, and then there was how it affects the rest of my life, [which] happened later at Bruyère.

That’s when it really hit home for me.”

According to the staff at Bruyère, Ursa’s progress over the past few months has been amazing; but for Ursa it has still felt slower than she would like. She started walking with assistance about one week after she arrived at Bruyère and she can still remember the excitement of being about to move her right arm for the first time.

Now Ursa is walking, able to raise her right arm about 90 degrees, and close her hand in a fist and release it part of the way. “Not quite all the way, yet,” she says.

Ursa says the physiotherapist, occupational therapist and speech language pathologist at Bruyère were incredible and definitely played a huge role in her recovery.

Her occupational therapist even created an extension to her viola bow so that she could hold it properly with the limited mobility she has in her right hand. “They were really wonderful,” she says.

“I made a lot of progress through them.”

Music has played a huge role in Ursa’s recovery and has been a main motivator for

her to work hard in therapy.

She says it was very hard at first when she wasn’t able to play music at all because it is such an important and integral part of her life. She is very thankful to one of her high school friends who was able to come visit her every day at Bruyère to help her play her viola and to her physiotherapist who always incorporated music in their sessions. “I don’t think I could have been quite as optimistic as I was if I didn’t have the music,” she says.

Overall, Ursa has been keeping her spirits up and working very hard at recovery. She has had her days where she has felt a bit down about how her stroke has affected her life, but overall she is optimistic about her ability to recover. “What happened, happened,” she says. “But I can affect how well I heal.”

Ursa is still enrolled in Music Performance at the University of Ottawa, and is taking one course this semester to see how things go. Originally, she was hoping to go back to school full time; but has realized that she

needs to be realistic and take the time she needs to recover.

“At one point, I did have the mindset of: I’m going to go and do all my courses despite this stroke,” she says. “I realized a better way of saying ‘screw you’ to the stoke is by recovering.”

Along with the music, Ursa says the tremendous support she has around her has been a huge motivator for her to stay positive and keep up with her recovery.

“I’ve got an amazing support system,” she says. “I’ve got music, I’ve got family, I’ve got friends, I’ve got so much good around me. I’ve just got to look at the good. Focus on the victories and everything will work itself out.”

Ursa now has full weeks of appointments focused on therapy, some with private services, and others at Bruyère. She is very grateful for all the fundraising that has taken place in North Grenville to support her recovery. “The community has been so amazing,” Ursa says. “I honestly can’t thank them enough.”

Ontario expanding Mental Health and Addictions Services The Ontario government is providing an additional $14.75 million to increase access to mental health and addictions services across the province. This funding will help support people from all walks of life during this unprecedented time, including families, young people, children, frontline workers, and Indigenous communities.

The details were provided last week by Premier Doug Ford and Michael Tibollo, Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions.

"We know mental health is just as important as physical health," said Premier Ford. "Everyone, including our heroic frontline workers, can sometimes experience burnout, depression or anxiety. Even though you may feel alone or helpless, we want you to know that we have your back. If you need someone to talk to, please reach out to some of the amazing mental health and addictions agencies in your local community. They are caring, compassionate and knowledgeable people who can help."

This investment was provided through the Support for People and Jobs Fund and Sept. 16, 2020

will help community-based mental health and addictions programs meet increasing service demands. The funding is being distributed as follows: $7 million to safely expand in-person mental health and addictions services to bridge current gaps brought on by COVID-19, including community-based services, congregate living and supportive housing; $4.75 million to support culturally safe services for Indigenous communities, with a focus on children and youth; and $3 million to expand virtual and online services including addictions supports, internet-based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (iCBT) and an online peer support community for mental health.

"Our government is expanding innovative and targeted mental health and addictions services to help people stay mentally healthy during these unprecedented times," said Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. "By making community-based, virtual and online mental health supports easily accessible, more individuals and families will be able to access the right mental

health and addictions services they need,when they need it."

"From downtown Toronto to rural and remote communities in Ontario's Far North, the impact of COVID-19 continues to be felt right across this province, especially among those living with mental health and addiction challenges," said Michael Tibollo, Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions. "That's why we'll continue to enhance existing supports while exploring new and innovative services through ground-breaking research."

The Ontario government is investing an additional $2.9 million in eight research projects that aim to support Ontario's response to COVID-19. These projects will focus on a wide variety of areas such as supporting the mental health and well-being of families and children, assessing the long-term health effects of COVID-19, the development of an app to better manage the care of patients, and an evaluation of the effectiveness of wearing masks to block the virus.

"Congratulations to the recipients of the $2.9 million in research funding to support

Ontario's response to COVID-19," said Ross Romano, Minister of Colleges and Universities. "Our postsecondary and research institutions are the best in the world, and these worthy research project will ensure that Ontarians receive the supports they need most, when and where they need them. I look forward to witnessing their benefits for the people of Ontario."

These eight research projects were submitted through the Ontario Together portal.

This is in addition to the 35 projects selected through the $20 million Ontario COVID-19 Rapid Research Fund.

Ontario has also partnered with the Canadian Institutes for Health Research to cofund Ontario projects through the federal rapid research call on COVID-19 mental health and addictions.

Since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, over 1,900 health care workers in Ontario have accessed mental health and addiction supports, including peer group discussions, training and education, internet-based Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and support from clinicians.

Baldwin’s Birds

by John Baldwin A cold but bright Saturday morning brought a flurry of activity into our garden. Following a few rainy days, the grass has sprung back to life and a few of the ground feeding birds took advantage of the situation. Robins were active, both immature youngsters and older ones, and, a lovely treat, a male Flicker. The Flicker is very often seen feeding on the ground, although it is a member of the Woodpecker family. Despite the cold, a few of the birds were actually taking a quick dip in our garden water feature. A few honks from the creek at the end of the road are a sure signal that the Canada geese will soon be on the move and heading south to warmer climes.

My best wishes to all our readers in the hope that they are, and will stay, fit and well.

Pharmacy as community

A new couple in town is hoping to get to know the community through their pharmacy located in the Kemptville Medical Centre on County Road 43. Samir and Gigi Rofael moved from Egypt with their two young children in 2010. Samir says they came to Canada to escape the conflict in the Middle

East and provide a better future for their kids. “Here in Canada it’s a better place for our kids to interact with different cultures,” he says.

“I think growing in a kind of country like Canada will add a lot to the personality of our kids for their future.”

Both Samir and Gigi were pharmacists in Egypt and had to pass three rigorous exams in order to become licensed in Canada, where they were tested

on their pharmaceutical knowledge as well as their practical skills in helping and advising patients. For the past 10 years, Samir has been working as the pharmacy manager at an Ottawa-based pharmacy dedicated to serving seniors in community retirement and nursing homes. Before opening their pharmacy in Kemptville, Gigi was working as a pharmacist in several different corporate pharmacy stores. Gigi is now the pharmacy manager in Kemptville, while Samir is still working in Ottawa while they get the store off the ground.

Not only do they both have an extensive background in pharmacy both in Egypt and Canada, but Samir also has an MBA and worked in sales and marketing for an international firm before they moved to Canada. “[I wanted] to start a new business, not actually as an entrepreneur, because the business of pharmacy is always there, but just to have our own business,” he said.

It has always been their dream to have their own pharmacy. Part of that dream was to open their pharmacy in a small town where they could really get to know the community.

Samir says they both enjoy

creating relationships with their patients and being able to help them not only with their pharmaceutical needs but their general health and wellbeing. “If you work in the job of a pharmacist, it is very interesting the kind of interaction between you and the patient,” Samir says.

“The feeling that the patient considers you as a kind of reliable source for all their troubles.”

The Kemptville Medical Pharmacy officially opened on August 24, Samir and Gigi’s 21st wedding anniversary. According to Samir, the location for the pharmacy in the Medical Centre is ideal for patients and will help streamline service between the five primary care physicians who work there and the pharmacy team. “It is very convenient, because

you can get the full support of the pharmacist interacting with your physician for any clarification of the prescription, for any kind of drug interaction or if you wish to have prescription renewal service,” he says.

“It’s kind of complementing the clinic.”

It is the passion for the business that drew hims and Gigi to open their own pharmacy, even in the current climate of COVID-19, when a lot of people are avoiding starting new ventures.

He believes strongly in building relationships with patients and being a reliable, thoughtful, and empathetic source of information for all their pharmaceutical needs. “We still have our dream and our vision to be part of the Kemptville community,” he says. “We need

to help clients and be a part of the comprehensive solution for those visiting the Kemptville Medical Centre as well as any other patients looking for a consultation or new pharmacy.”

The Kemptville Medical Pharmacy is now open at 2670 County Road 43 in the Kemptville Medical Centre. It is currently open from Monday to Thursday from 8am-7pm, and Friday and Saturday 8am-12pm.

“My slogan is convenience, peace of mind, and quick service which is the most important thing for the patients going into the clinic,” Samir says. “As well as a community pharmacy, we want to have the kind of place that offers solutions, consultations and advice to all the people dealing with our store.”

There have been no new COVID-19 cases identified in Leeds, Grenville & Lanark since September 7. To date, there have been 366 confirmed cases, 1 of which is still active, 313 of which have recovered, and 52 of which have been fatal. The single active case is in the Lanark East region.There are currently no active outbreaks within long-term care facilities or residences.

by David Shanahan A federal Ministerial Order signed on August 25, 2020 set apart 113.6 acres of land as an addition to the reserve of Kutebah Al Yousef the Chippewas of Kettle & Stony Point First Nation. Kettle & Stony Point First Nation is located approximately 35 kilometres northeast of Sarnia, Ontario on the east shore of Lake Huron. The newly-added lands are located on the site of the former Ipperwash Provincial Park. In 1942, during World War II, the Canadian Government evicted eighteen Anishinabek families from the lands to erect a military base, Camp Ipperwasf, destroying a traditional burial site in the process. On September 6, 1995, Anthony “Dudley” George lost his life seeking to reclaim this land and the adjacent former Camp Ipperwash for Chippewas of Kettle & Stony Point First Nation when the Ontario government sent in the OPP. The police opened fire on the people protesting the loss of the lands.

The Province of Ontario earlier transferred the former Ipperwash Provincial Park lands to Canada for this purpose, fulfilling a commitment made by the provincial government following the release of the Ipperwash Inquiry Report. It will take about 20 years to clean up the site of Camp Ipperwash.

Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, stated: "The return of these lands is an important step in the history of Canada, as today we are able to right past wrongs.

Dudley George died in 1995 trying to reclaim these lands and today, the Government of Canada is honoured to set apart these lands for the use and benefit of the First Nation. Our work together is another step in advancing reconciliation and improving the treaty relationship with First Nations. I wish Chief Henry and Chippewas of Kettle & Stony Point First Nation great success in their continued development."

Chief Jason Henry, Chief of Chippewas of Kettle & Stony Point First Nation, commented on the restoration of the land: "The Chippewas of Kettle and Stony Point First Nation would like to acknowledge the formal return of a portion the lands we call Aazhoodena (Stony Point). As a Nation, we have always known about the significance of Aazhoodena, and the lands there were reclaimed in 1995. The return of the former Provincial Park lands is an important legal indicator for our Ancestors and our future generations that we’re home again and the land is legally ours. It is also important that we honour the memory of Dudley George today, who made the supreme sacrifice in respect of the Ancestors and all of those who have dedicated their lives to the return of our lands."

Just bake ‘em! Green tomatoes are fantastic when made into a loaf that can be enjoyed all winter long. You simply bake it, let it cool, wrap it well, first with plastic film, then with foil wrap and pop them in the freezer. My super-baking spouse Beth puts a bit of masking tape on with a marker indication of what’s in the package. Of course, you will probably want to eat one of them warm, just with some butter, or some of your favourite jam or conserve; you might also serve it as a full dessert, topped with cream cheese icing or drizzled with maple syrup. Delicious!

Green Tomato Loaf

Ingredients: 3 eggs 2 cups of sugar 1 cup of oil 1 tsp vanilla 3 cups of flour 2 teaspoons each of baking powder and baking soda ½ teaspoons cloves 1 tsp salt 1 tablespoon of cinnamon 2 cups of green tomatoes* *Green Tomatoes Wash tomatoes well, cut off stems and bad spots. Use a blender or food processor so that there are no large pieces left. You can also grate them. Strain for at least ½ hour to remove excess liquid.

Preparation : In a large bowl, beat the eggs and sugar until frothy. Gradually add the oil and vanilla.

100 Women Who Care The North Grenville Chapter of 100 Women Who Care is holding its quarterly meeting Thursday, September 17, virtually on Zoom at 7pm. Representatives from the Kemptville Salvation Army will share how the $3,500 raised at their last virtual meeting was used to benefit our community. Those charities that have been nominated and are up for consideration will also speak about the need that they see, and how they can help address that need.

Local teen starts new business during COVID-19

North Grenville couple open resort in Seely’s Bay

A North Grenville couple is now the proud new owner of Sunny Acres Resort and Marina in Seely’s Bay. Lyn and Warren O’Callaghan have been in the property management business for 24 years. They owned 23 rental units in Brockville, Prescott and Chesterville, and Warren was managing them out of their home base in Kemptville, while Lyn was working at her own fulltime job. Earlier this year, they decided that it would be a good idea to sell their units and consolidate them into one rental property, so they weren’t stretched so thin. “For the last number of years we’ve been saying life is too busy, and we saw an opportunity to still stay busy, but have a more enjoyable lifestyle,” Lyn says.

At first, they were looking at a property in Westport, but Lyn wasn’t sure about it because it wasn’t on the water. Unconvinced, they expanded the search a bit further south and came across a cute little 20-cottage resort in Seely’s Bay. At first, Lyn wasn’t serious about buying Sunny Acres, but after she showed it to Warren, he convinced her that it was a great investment and something they could definitely take on. “Within half an hour of seeing it we had called the real estate agent and booked a viewing for that Saturday,” Lyn says.

When they walked onto the property, they met the owners, Rita and Walter Stoller, who had been running Sunny Acres for the past 20 years. They fell in Sept. 16, 2020

love with the property immediately and knew they had to have it. They made an offer and it was accepted that day.

Lyn, Warren and their son Connor moved to Sunny Acres on August 1 and worked with Rita and Walter until their closing date so they could learn the ropes and help out during the high season.

Lyn says Rita and Walter were great in encouraging them to make Sunny Acres their own.

“They were so great to say to us - change everything.

You’re going to bring youth and vibrancy and you’re going to take Sunny Acres to the next level,” Lyn says. “They were really excited for us.”

Lyn admits that Sunny Acres needs a bit of TLC; but she and Warren have lots of plans to make it a fun and vibrant place or respite for people of all ages. They currently have five cottages which are available all your round, but they are hoping to winterize all of them so that they can offer accommodation to people in the off season as well. They are also planning on painting and upgrading the décor in the cottages to make them “Canada themed”, with each cottage representing a province, territory, or notable Canadian place. To stay as environmentally friendly as possible, Lyn is sourcing all her decorating material from second-hand shops like Value Village and The Score. “There are some crazy tacky things that I fell in love with at The Score and purchased those for the PEI cottage,” she says.

“It’s been a real treasure hunt for me to got out and decorate all of these cottages.”

Warren were not worried about the pandemic affecting their business. When they did some market research online, Lyn noticed how in demand cottages and rental properties were in Ontario. “We knew people could physically distance here. They could have fun, they could go boating, they could go fishing, and they would be able to stay within their bubble,” she says.

With a lot of the resort’s previous guests coming from the United States, Lyn used social media to advertise Sunny Acres as a getaway for people within the province. “We have people who are coming from Montreal, Cornwall, Toronto, Windsor, London, Ottawa, and a few people from the Gatineau area as well,” she says, adding that once many of their guests are at the resort for a few days they are already booking for next season. “People are not even here for a day and they know that they want to come back.”

Lyn and Warren’s future goals for the resort are to have it filled throughout the year with guests, school groups and events. Over the Labour Day weekend, they hosted a COVID-19 friendly wedding which they say was very successful. “There’s lots of potential here,” Lyn says. “[We’re] easily providing something where [guests] can come and set the world aside and be here in the moment and then carry that moment with them until the next time they come back.”

Even though Lyn and Warren have moved out of Kemptville, North Grenville still holds a special place in their hearts. Lyn says they would love to welcome peo-

A young entrepreneur has taken a Mother’s Day gift idea and turned it into a thriving business. In May, thirteen-year-old Payton Cory was wondering what she could give her mother for Mother’s Day, as she couldn’t go shopping for a gift because of COVID-19. She started googling Mother’s Day gifts online and found a recipe for hand scrub which used ingredients they already had at home. “I ended up just making it, because it seemed pretty simple,” she says.

Payton’s mom liked her pineapple hand scrub so much she gave some to Payton’s grandmother, who then shared it with one of her friends. “They said: you should really make this into a business,” Payton says. “And that’s how the idea bloomed.”

Her grandparents became her investors and helped her source and create packaging for the scrub. Payton came up with the name Sweet Scrub, because one of the main ingredients is sugar. All the ingredients in the scrub are natural and edible, although Payton doesn’t recommend tasting it. “I had to try to make sure,” she says. “It’s very sweet.”

Since she started the business in June, Payton has sold over 200 jars of Sweet Scrub through family and friends.

She now has five different scents: strawberry, pineapple, coffee vanilla, pumpkin spice, and apple cinnamon, all of which have been created and tested alongside her grandmother at their home. “I’m very proud,” says grandmother, Lynn Pominville. “She’s very focused on coming up with new scents, and creative in what she wants to do.”

Payton is already looking towards the holidays and wants to create two new scents, cranberry and peppermint, for the season. She is also looking at creating holiday gift packages for people twho might want to buy multiple scents for their friends and family. Payton is still in the development phase for these scents, but she hopes to have them available by November 15.

Although Sweet Scrub is Payton’s business, she says she really enjoys testing and creating recipes with her grandmother. Sweet Scrub has been a great activity to have throughout the pandemic and she hopes that the business will help her save up to buy a car in a few years.

Getting Back to Child Care and Schools COVID-SMART

from Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit Health Units have had many questions about COVID-19 from families with children attending child care centres, and families with children and youth in schools.

We already know that COVID-19 is spread through droplets from a cough, sneeze or singing by people who are infectious to someone who is close to them. This is a good time to remember that the droplets can land up to two metres away and can survive for a few hours on hard surfaces. Symptoms may look like a cold (sore throat, runny nose, cough, fever, headache) or other symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea. Symptoms can develop up to 14 days after being infected - usually two to five days.

Public health and school boards are asking parents to use an anonymous online screening tool (also available in printable version) each day to provide direction about what to do if a child is experiencing symptoms.

This should become part of your family’s morning routine. Teachers, school staff and any other individuals entering the school will also be asked to self-screen using the COVID-19 selfassessment tool, and follow its directions.

The Leeds Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit has been working with the schools boards in our regions as well as the Eastern Ontario Health Unit to implement the Ministry of Education Guidelines for child care and school re-opening . The Guidelines are based on the key public health measures that have helped us “flatten the curve” and keep cases low in our communities. We are promoting that people be COVID - SMART to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in all regions – see a link to what this acronym means here: healthunit.org/healthinformation/covid-19/gatherings-social-circles.

Preventing and minimizing transmission is our priority. Our case and contact management team is ready 7 days a week to investigate new positive COVID-19 cases and trace who might have been exposed. Public Health will be involved at every step and are ready to answer questions and offer guidance related to symptoms and testing.

Public Health will contact all the families of children/youth, as well as teachers and others who might have had close contact (less than 2 metres) with an individual with COVID-19.

Close contacts are required to stay at home for 14 days, or as directed by Public Health, and will be informed about testing requirements.

“We also are committed to respecting children’s privacy and ask that people

be kind and resist the temptation to speculate about absences or share rumours about possible cases - especially on social media,” Dr. Stewart continued. “Kindness and compassion need to be shown at all times.”
