Local musician and songwriter Larry Pegg wants Canadians to consider offering up their vote in the upcoming election to youth. He says, "This election, more than ever before, be a proxy for young people who cannot yet vote.” Voting by proxy is a way of including minors, who are not yet legally given a vote, in the democratic process that will guide the future of our planet.

When Larry lost his 21-year-old daughter Kelly Anne to suicide in December of 2007, he became all too aware of how young people suffer from climate despair. His daughter, like many young people, suffered from the impression that planet earth, its climate and inhabitants, are doomed due to lack of respect for the environment. In 2019, we saw young people all over the world rise up at Climate Marches. This movement continues today, as many of the people at the forefront of environmental activism are youth. But still other youth feel hopeless and voiceless in the face of climate change.

Larry says “Given the importance of this election as it pertains to climate action and its direct relationship to eco-anxiety affecting millions of young people today, I would like to reinforce this important message and get it out across Canada to help voters know how important this issue is to those who cannot vote.”

what youth believe: the political decisions we make now will shape the world that young people inherit. He says “Mature voters can become a proxy vote for young people. By mature I mean those in retirement, or those close to the end of their long, relatively safe and comfortable lives. Even those with a terminal illness, or undecided or confused voters. It can even mean first time voters who are overwhelmed by the complexity of the platforms.

What I’m talking about is a revolutionary way to engage people in democracy. We pivoted for Covid. We can pivot for our children’s future too.”

To Larry, this election cycle will mark a pivotal moment for “climate action or climate inaction, a moment for the history books.”

Proxy voting is not an official process, but a social promise. Larry suggests that “A proxy voter can ask a young person to come along with them on voting day.

They ask them to witness their marking an “x” for that young person’s choice.” This does not have to happen without discussion. “Beforehand, the proxy-givers demographic (grandparent or parent, or trusted friend) can make a dedicated point of listening to, not lecturing to, young people. They should listen to their concerns about climate inaction and then choose to become their proxies.”

Larry says, “In my sleep I’m imagining how powerful that intimate human moment would be. Teaching a young person the power of their protest, the power of voting, and the power of listening, all in one civic gesture called a proxy vote. All of this to help save the world for young people who are afraid today.

Older voters were afraid once too. Canadians afraid during the Nuclear missile crisis, during WW2 and prior conflicts. I can’t help but think of the many soldiers who have given up their lives for our young peoples’ future and their right to vote.”

Mouth2Mouth Project donates to House of Lazarus

Debbie Amirault of North Grenville donated $500 to House of Lazarus, the most recent donation of funds raised through the Mouth2Mouth project.

Debbie has now donated over $4,800 to the Kempt-

ville Salvation Army and the House of Lazarus.

After receiving donations of fabric from community members, Debbie started the Mouth2Mouth project in March of 2020. She reused otherwise unused material to make face masks. She describes the idea as “community helping community.

The donation of fabric came from the community. And then they turn around and purchase a mask for a super low price. Then that gets donated to the community. So it goes full circle.”

Funnily enough, Cathy Ashby, Executive Director of HOL, said that the funds raised by Debbie will be used to support the House of Lazarus’ Neighbour Helping Neighbours program. This program allocates “donated money to help families: if they are in hydro arrears or if they need something done like maintenance on their vehicle. Sometimes eyeglasses, dental work, those types of things.” Cathy says that lately, “there have been a lot of requests. So this donation will really help with that. And it's neat that [Debbie] described it as community helping com-

munity. Things are working two ways here.”

Debbie has lots of projects on the go with the hope of continuing to raise funds as demand for masks subsides.

She is making poppies and knit baby hats, and brainstorming other ideas. She says “Sewing is my happy place. I think it's because of everything that's going along with what I'm doing. Giving back to the community is just so satisfying.”

Another view of climate change

by Christine Dorothy I would like to acknowledge my appreciation of The Times for their open and objective platform which provides an opportunity for robust debate on controversial issues such as man made climate change. It’s truly a positive experience that Fred Schueler, Colin Creasey and Mannie Giles took the time to contribute so extensively to the conversation, and that The Times gave us the opportunity to put our views forward.

A good place to start is what we do agree on. Firstly, climate is changing and, secondly, we need to take better care of the earth. The question is how much is caused by us. To my knowledge, there is no conclusive evidence or measurement that human activity is causing a dangerous rise in temperature. We can do a much better job cleaning up the earth.

That being said, it cannot be proven that a clean earth will stop the climatic swings.

Al Gore did much to vilify CO2 when, in actuality, it is correlated to, but not causing, the climate to

warm. The warming takes place first, and then warmer air can hold more CO2. And it is not toxic. For example, when you are in a crowded room, CO2 levels can go as high as 3000ppm and no one gets sick. It is estimated that the Mount St Helen’s volcanic eruption in 1980 spewed more CO2 and green house gasses than man has in his entire history, and we didn’t die, nor did the temperatures rise. But CO2 now has a bad reputation, and that reputation precedes any discussion that takes place. So lets have a look at some facts about CO2.

CO2 levels were lower in the 30’s, which was the hottest decade on record. A record breaking heat wave in California in 1923, with temperatures over 100 degrees, lasted over thirty days, with the hottest day being 134 degrees. Scientist William Happer believes, “We are really in a CO2 famine now…..

Susan Crockford did a study on this and writes about it in her book “The Polar Bear Catastrophe That Never Happened”. Another alarming headline: “Arctic Ocean Getting Warm: Seals Vanish and Icebergs Melt”, was the cry in the Washington Post in November of 1922. Arctic sea ice was 22% greater in 2016 than in 2012. The decline in Arctic ice ceased in 2007, it plateaued and now is growing, apparently part of a 60 year cycle, according to Ron

And these levels obviously had nothing to do with the burning of fossil fuels which are named the culprit of rising CO2 levels today. Takeda Kunihiko, Vice Chancellor of the Institute of Science and Technology at Chubu University in Japan states, “CO2 emissions make absolutely no difference one way or the other…... Every scientist knows this, but it doesn’t pay to say so.” New Zealand climate scientist Chris de Freitas believes, “The influence of increasing CO2 on global weather is almost indiscernible.” This must be the case, since CO2 levels during an ice age were 10X’s higher than today.

These natural variations occurred, and science cannot differentiate between what man is causing and what is natural. Apparently, CO2 levels could double and we wouldn’t notice any difference in the weather.

So if its not CO2, what is it that causes these swings between warming and cool-

Op-Ed: The politics of who sucks less

by Brandon Mayer How do you choose which candidate gets your vote? Do you carefully study party platforms? Maybe your personal beliefs are strongly liberal, or strongly conservative, or strongly in the middle, and so the choice is easy. Maybe the honesty or charisma of the party leader matters more to you than the party principles. For me, the choice is a lot less intellectual. For me, it comes down to which party and candidate sucks less.

In my younger days, I had strong political leanings, and I did not shy away from expressing my beliefs. Then something struck me: ALL political candidates make mistakes and get themselves tangled in crushing scandals.

That was the point when I became disheartened, and politics became a subject of backburner importance for me. I would wager that every politician has things they’ve done or said in the public’s watchful eyes and ears that they wish they could erase from history. Dirt can be uncovered on just about any politician with little effort. I can only assume that the long September 8, 2021

list of scandals is the reason that smear campaigns now dominate Canadian politics, rather than honest discussions of which party is proposing what.

So what kind of candidate selector are you? Turns out there’s some psychology behind it. Arguably, the easiest way people choose candidates is because their parents (or someone influential to them) has had a lifelong affiliation with a certain party. Likewise, some people may have strong feelings regarding a few of a party’s policies, and develop their affiliation from there.

In either case, confirmation bias kicks in once that initial choice is made, and the person processes every decision their party leader makes in a way that makes them love him or her even more. This is the reason why, for example, devout Liberals argued that it was hypocritical for Conservatives to play the racism card when photos emerged of Justin Trudeau in blackface.

It’s a matter of “our leader is bad, but yours is worse, because we love ours and have no excuse for him”. This is starting to sound like “who sucks less” politics, but we

Forest fires have nothing to do with CO2, but rather with warmer fluctuations in the weather. For example, the 30’s had extremely hot temperatures and burn acreage was at 50 million acres, according to the US Forest Service. Compare that to this year at 10 million acres, as reported in the National Interagency Fire Center. Preindustrial burn acreage was around 145,000 per year when CO2 levels were around 300 ppm.

Floods are way down as well. The flooding in Europe recently is extremely rare and severe. However, historically floods were much worse than today. To cite a few: floods killed 15,000 in Germany in 1634; 14,000 in the Netherlands in 1717; 10,000 in Russia in 1824; 1,917 in Italy in 1970; and 172 in Russia in 2012. The floods of 1913 in the US, coupled with raging tornados and fires, caused

loss of life and devastated territories, leading to famine and disease. One of the worst floods in 1925 killed 1,000 people. In 1936, the whole eastern US was flooded. Millions of floods have occurred in our history. They are not new.

Alarmists stories go like this: In 1988, the UN claimed the Maldives would be underwater in thirty years, and James Hanson of NASA claimed Lower Manhattan would be underwater by that time as well. It's three years past that date and the Maldives and Lower Manhattan seem to be still there and not under water. In summary, tornadoes, hurricanes, fires, and floods are part of the weather system, and they are not increasing as the climate alarmists would like you to believe.

There is only one truth out there, and I do believe we are all sincerely trying to find out what it is. Maybe searching for it outside of government documents would be a start.

Build a solid long-term plan.

My guess is that the list for your preferred party will be finite, and your list for the opposing parties will have to end with “…and there’s definitely more”. Trudeau haters love to scribble “Trudeau must go” anywhere they can, and, likewise, devout Liberals point us to the mistakes of Stephen Harper and even Mike Harris, because they can’t say much about an untested Erin O’Toole. If this describes you, then the fighting children in the House of Commons have warped your DNA, and you are now inclined to hate and smear the candidates you don’t like, instead of voting in pursuit of “good”. This is why social media political debates have their foundation in third grade nicknames such, LIEberals, CONservatives, and CRIME minister.

the best type of voter? What is the best type of voter? In an ideal world, it would come down to party platforms and campaign promises. In the absence of insults, scandals, and smearing, Canadians would have only the real issues to worry about. However, this requires a perfect candidate, and we have yet to see one of those. The alternative, until the kids in parliament grow up, is to vote for who will do the least harm. In other words, be like me, and become what I call a Who-Sucks-Less Candidate Selector.

No relief from insurance premiums for Municipalities

The North Grenville Arts Guild Summer Art Show

submitted by Paul Cormier On Saturday, August 28, the North Grenville Arts Guild put on a Summer Art Show in collaboration with its ongoing partner, Salamanders of Kemptville. Art was displayed starting from the Rotary Park all the way down the driveway and along the waterfront. North Grenville’s intrepid Town Crier and BIA Executive Director, Deron Johnston, called all those present to order. He was followed by a warm welcome from NGAG President Tammy Keith and a salute to the Algonquin Nation by Paul Cormier from Salamanders. Then Councillor Doreen O’Sullivan officially opened the show on behalf of Municipal Council and the NGAG in the midst of threatening skies. The weather cleared soon after, and townspeople and visitors had the opportunity to visit with a fine group of artists who believe in improving the quality of our lives as a community with their creations. and councillors Kristin Strackerjan and John Barclay helped Councillor O’Sullivan and others complete an Art of the Day creation for use in future charity work by the Guild.

The use of the Rotary Park and the waterfront was particularly pleasing due to the Kemptville Horticultural Society’s ongoing beautification program and to the Municipality’s initiative in installing attractive guard rails along the Reach, thus allowing the artists to choose the best layouts for their art pieces. by David Shanahan For many years now, the costs and demands of what is called Joint and Several Liability have meant that many of the events and activities which were once part of community life of municipalities became impossible.

Under Joint and Several Liability, a municipality may become liable for the full amount of any compensation granted by a court in the case of an insurance claim, even if the municipality is only partly responsible under law. There have been many examples in Ontario which is one of the only provinces to operate joint and several liability regulations. One regional example is from an accident that took place in Ottawa in 2008.

A 20-year-old ma, driving an SUV in Ottawa went through a red light and collided with an OC Transpo bus at Heron and Riverside at around 2 o’clock in the morning. The driver who had a blood alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit for a fully licensed driver, was killed, along with two of his passengers, both 19 years old. Two other passengers were injured. They had spent the night drinking in a number of pubs, and got into the car with the driver who only had a G2 licence which disqualified him from driving with any alcohol in his system.

The two surviving passengers sued the pubs in which they had been drinking, the City of Ottawa (which owns OC Transpo) and the estate of the dead driver. In 2016, a court found the City 20% responsible for the accident and awarded one claimant $2.1 million, and the other $200,000. The reason the City was 20% responsible was because the bus was going 66 kilometres an hour in a 60

It may seem farcical that two young people would gain so much from getting into a car with a very drunk friend who ran a red light and caused his death and that of two friends, but that is what happens under a policy called Joint and Several Liability which states that all parties found in any way “responsible” for an accident are liable to claims. If other parties to the case cannot pay, then bodies like the City of Ottawa are required to pay the full amount of the award granted by the courts. In this case, the driver’s insurance payout was reduced from $1 million to $200,000 because he was drunk. The City of Ottawa had to pay $2.3 million altogether because the bus, going through a green light in snowy conditions, was possibly just 6 kilometres over the speed limit.

The idea for many claimants is that municipalities have “deep pockets” and can afford to pay these claims, so they list municipalities as co-defendants on the least excuse. The problem is that municipalities, as a rule, cannot afford these judgments, and so insurance premiums go through the roof, and municipalities restrict activities and events which might make them liable should someone be injured in the course of normal recreational activity. This includes traditional activities such as tobogganing, outdoor skating, street hockey, as well as restricting organizations from providing recreational events.

Premier Ford stated: “We have heard your concerns about increasing insurance costs and the impact that these costs can have on property taxes, on municipal taxpayers and on the average Ontario resident. We heard your concerns about the liability chill, preventing everyday activities in your municipalities, like activities as simple as tobogganing or street hockey.

We need to make sure that the vulnerable injured people are fairly compensated. We will look at this evidence and develop a solution that makes sense.”

Steve Clark then sent out a letter to Ontario’s municipalities in which he repeated the Premier’s commitment to consultations and stated that he and Attorney General Caroline Mulroney would be announcing “details relating to the consultation process” in the near future. Nothing has changed since. At the Association of Municipalities of Ontario’s [AMO] annual conference held recently, neither politician made any reference to the issue, but AMO recommended that the province adopt a model of full proportionate liability to replace the system known as “the 1% Deep Pockets Rule”.

It was noted that 65% of insurance premiums paid by municipalities goes to cover losses, with the remaining 35% to marketing, fees and expenses.

This severe drain on budgets has also placed a freeze on many community activities, as municipalities try to avoid any activity that could result in an insurance claim against them.

AMO is also running a pilot project with ten municipalities to help them develop a risk management information system that would link claim data, incident reporting, property, vehicle and equipment lists. It is hoped that better management of the data would help minimize risk and reduce associated insurance costs.

Joint and Several Liability is placing a severe burden on lower tier level municipalities especially, and taxpayers are either paying higher taxes to cover insurance premiums, or else having to cancel traditional community activities because they can’t afford to pay the municipality’s costs to cover them with insurance. It would be nice if Ford and Clark would follow up on their commitments from two years ago.

What is the medallion intended to celebrate? Canada is a maritime nation. The objectives of the Navy League of Canada, incorporated in Canada in 1895, are diverse and strongly focused on the best interests of Canada in the maritime domain. Bordered by three oceans, this focus is understandable, but more than that, it is an imperative. This

medallion celebrates 125 successful years of achievement of objectives.

The Royal Canadian Navy established the Cadet Program and updated it for the times to give young boys and girls the opportunity to develop good mental, moral and physical strength, to develop patriotism, leadership, good citizenship, a sense of duty, discipline, self-respect, and to respect others — all in a naval environment suitable for young people. What an incredible way to develop amazing young contributing Canadian citizens! Communities, organizations, and private citizens have worked

Rummage Sale in Support of Spencerville TNR

Spencerville TNR Cat Rescue is hosting a rummage sale at Ferguson Forest Centre on September 11.

The event will also include a bake sale, sun catchers, jewelry, and agendas that Spencerville TNR regularly sells for fundraising, vintage and handmade clothes and the Curbalicious Cart.

The funds raised at the rummage sale will support Spencerville TNR Cat Rescue. TNR stands for trap, neuter, release and re-home. According to fundraising coordinator Colleen Morris-Wilson, “last year, Spencerville TNR helped between 800-900 cats.

Of those, about 400 were re-homed.”

Cats that seem able to adapt to life as a pet are treated to whatever medical services they require - sometimes costly surgeries- and then housed through a foster system until they are adopted. Feral cats which would be unable to adapt to domestic life, are trapped, September 8, 2021

provided with veterinary care, spayed or neutered, and then released back to their colony.

This system prevents feral cats from overpopulating and spreading disease, and also provides many local farmers with mousers.

Colleen explains that “none of this would happen without supporters and without money.” The upcoming rummage sale is your opportunity to help support and fund Spencerville TNR in helping hundreds of local cats each year.

Those wanting to contribute to the rummage sale can rent a table for $25. This deposit is just to serve as a commitment to use the spot, and can be refunded after the sale. Sell your items in the manner you would at a yard sale, and then donate the cash to Spencerville TNR at the end of the day. You are volunteering your time and donating the cash you make from selling items to help fund the rescue. Colleen described the event as “a way for people who would like to help the rescue but are perhaps not in a financial situation to do that, to give us a little bit of

time and some treasures they would love to get rid of.”

Colleen also noted that if you have stuff to donate, but are short on time, you can drop off some items to be sold on your behalf. You

must, however, return at the end of the day to collect any unsold items. This is a small event being run by a small number of volunteers, and they do not have the capacity to manage large amounts of

leftover stuff.

Don’t get taken for a spin

Political spin is a propaganda technique characterized as an attempt to control communication in order to deliver a message in a manner most beneficial to one’s own interests. Politicians can protect themselves from admitting that they made a mistake, or that they made a promise they will not be able to keep, by carefully choosing their language.

Political spin is not necessarily a lie, but it is a way of concealing the truth.

Since Justin Trudeau called the federal election on August 15, our online community forums have been buzzing as residents of our riding discuss whether or not they will re-elect Michael Barrett as our MP. Many of these conversations circle around Mr. Barrett’s vote against Bill C-6, the federal ban on conversion therapy. Some state that

his vote against Bill C-6 led them to withdraw support, others support Mr.Barrett’s vote, and still others continue to believe that Mr.Barrett voted against the ban because it didn’t go far enough to protect LGBTQ2+ people.

To be clear, it is my opinion that Mr. Barrett’s vote against Bill C-6 is indefensible. But the bill itself is not what I aim to discuss here. Rather, this is a locally relevant instance of political spin.

When the media, myself included, caught wind of Mr. Barrett’s vote and reached out for an explanation, we were issued a release that became part of his standard public explanation of his vote. In the statement, Mr.Barrett says: “I am unequivocal in my opposition to conversion therapy and attempts to forcibly change a person’s sexual orientation.” And that he believes greater

while the contents of the proposed changes to the bill demonstrate the opposite is a prime example of political spin.

People who fall for the spin can’t be blamed: while Mr. Barrett states his support for the LGBTQ2+ community in plain language, the contents of the bill are incredibly complex. It took me the better part of an hour to parse out the disjuncture between his claims and his actions.

It is of course not just Mr. Barrett who uses techniques such as this; spin is a pervasive political technique across party lines. On a federal level, one could understand the Liberal climate plan as spin. While his platform promises clean technologies and to tackle oil and gas emissions, Canada is the only G7 nation to actually increase emissions since Trudeau signed the 2016 Paris Agreement.

But here’s the spin: the clarity in the bill that Mr. Barrett and other conservative MPs advocated for has a number of implications that would still allow conversion therapy to be legally practiced. A vote against Bill C-6 is underpinned by the notion that being an LGBTQ2+ person is something that can, or even ought, to be corrected. For instance, the changes to the bill proposed by conservatives would still permit practices in which minors forcibly undergo conversion therapy at the discretion of their parent(s) or legal guardian. This is in fact the vulnerable group that the bill aims to protect.

Bill C-6 already contains a clause in which consenting adults could undergo conversion therapy should they wish to do so. Mr. Barrett’s claim to support the LGBTQ2+ community

If you could only put this leadership, passion, and determination in taking a stand against the Ford government and the proposed prison.

At first, I was very shocked at the non action taken by you, claiming you were just as surprised. Then I began hearing statements: ‘I beleive in only fighting battles I can win.’ ‘It’s going to be built and I’m not going to waste my energy going against the project.’ ‘Most of the prison plans are outside of council’s control.’ ‘But I think I am quite confident that businesses will be supported.’

‘I welcome new programming to help the residents of this facility.'

Unfortunately, Mayor Peckford and council, in spite of all the improvements established, history will remember you as you the

council that caved and let the proposed prison change the face of Kemptville.

We cannot access health care unless we show our health card. We may not smoke in public areas. There is nothing new here. Pierre Trudeau froze wages and prices. During WWII everyone over 16 had to register and carry their registration card at all times.

Most school boards have for years required children to be vaccinated in order to attend school. I am sure that anyone who is reading this could add to my list of actions that are in place for the greater good of all citizens.

Citizen writer Ivison writes that these protests are a complicated situation.

Most of us were so relieved to be vaccinated and to see that many restrictions that were in place to keep us safe could be lifted. These people are selfish individuals who do not give a damn for the children who cannot yet be vaccinated, who have not a clue

about the history of vaccines and the lives they have saved all around the world. They are either unaware of or do not care that measles, whooping cough, scarlet fever, mumps, spinal meningitis, diphtheria, tuberculosis, and polio have been eradicated in most parts of the world thanks to vaccines. Do the diabetics among them refuse insulin injections?

Where is their common sense when they find out that the majority, I have read 90%, of those now contracting this virus are the unvaccinated?

Or are they like the Trumpers who believe every lie and conspiracy theory they are fed?

If September brings us back to the same restrictions we have cooperated with for 20 months, we will know why, but we will still not understand those who are so uncaring and selfish.

if you aim to research and educate yourself, obscure language can conceal any number of hidden truths.

Had he been honest, Mr. Barrett would have said that he supports parents’ and guardians’ right to decide if the minors under their care ought to undergo conversion therapy. Then we would all have the facts clearly laid out before us.

So if we can’t rely on politicians to give us a straight answer, who are we to trust? I would propose that trusting more in members of our own community is part of the solution. Of course, all individuals must research, reflect, and form their own

opinions. But the very word political refers to polis: the greek word for city and the people who fill it. We are not just individuals, but members of communities. When a neighbour explains how a political decision affects that person or family member, it is an opportunity to learn and adjust our points of view in order to accommodate more than just ourselves. Politicians will likely never learn your name or know how you voted, but your fellow community members will remember if you take their viewpoints, arguments, and contributions to heart.

Dear Editor, Kudos for the Op-Ed by Brandon Mayer titled “Vaccine Mandates Prove the Death of Free Choice". I have been surprised and disappointed that more people (vaccinated or not vaccinated) have not spoken up about the civil rights violations, privacy concerns, and bioethics issues that Brandon highlighted so eloquently. A two-tiered society is a violation of everything our country is supposed to stand for.

The right of dominion over your own body to choose what is injected into it is guaranteed in Canada’s Rights and Freedoms Act and the Universal Declarations of Bioethics and Human Rights.

The right to employment free from harassment and threats, while complying with reasonable mandates such as frequent rapid-testing.

The right to move freely within our society, while complying with reasonable precautions such as masking and distancing.

The right to confidentiality of our medical files is protected in Canada’s Privacy Act — what gives a shop owner the right to view anything in your personal medical file?

We, as a society, should NOT need a reminder that EVERYONE needs to speak out when civil, human, privacy rights are being violated as is the case with “forced vaccines” and “vaccine passports”. This is not the early days of Nazi Germany where the rights of one tier of society (in that case, the Jewish community and other ethnic groups) were being increasingly violated and most people did not speak out against it, remained silent (denoting consent), complied with it or, worse, actively took part in it.

Mrs. Janice Atkey Videto Winchester Dear Editor, The science on climate change is as settled as the science on evolution is. The recent IPCC report drew upon 14,000 scientific papers published other the past 8 years – this is a huge body of evidence and is drawn from multiple lines of enquiry across multiple disciplines. There is absolutely no doubt that increasing levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases increase global temperatures and no doubt that human activity has caused a huge increase in atmospheric GHG concentrations. Jim Bertram quotes an article by emeritus professor William M. Gray disputing climate change, however it is important to note that professor Gray was never involved in climate change research but was an expert on hurricanes and tropical storms. Scientists are humans just like the rest of us and are subject to the same weaknesses we are all vulnerable to, including ego, jealousy and greed. It is not surprising that there are a small number of scientists who reject anthropogenic climate change, but they are not representative of the evidence on the subject.

Willem Van Dam has some good ideas about how CO2 emissions can be reduced. Our economies and societies have been built on fossil fuels and individual action is nowhere near enough.

We need systemic change to tackle the climate crisis.

Governments should and already are introducing bans on sales of ICE vehicles in the near future. Building codes should be amended to require high insulation, solar panels and heat pumps for new buildings and to prohibit any installation of new natural gas connections.

The number of flights does need to be reduced, and we should start with prohibiting private jets and levying heavy taxes on the small number of people who take the majority of flights. But we also need government investment alongside this in areas such September 8 2021

as high speed rail, cycling infrastructure, internet connectivity, and requiring crown corporations to manufacture and install the insulation, solar panels, and heat pumps.

Mr Van Dam also identifies a number of other crises that we are facing at present including housing, homelessness, drugs and debt. We need to consider the root causes of these multiple crises, and the fact that we live in a highly unequal world where a small number of people control unimaginable levels of wealth and the rest of us are fighting for scraps. Thanks to the neoliberal, free market capitalism that was ushered in 40 years ago by Reagan, Thatcher and Mulroney, capital has become ever more powerful at the expense of labour. We are in the situation we are now thanks to unbridled capitalism and an unrepresentative democratic system. Unrestrained markets and continual economic growth are not the solution.

I get it, change is uncomfortable. Change is difficult.

Change is challenging. Its comforting to think we can continue to do things as we have in the recent past. But change is also necessary and rewarding. We need new economic and political models because the existing ones are not working and are threatening the continuation of human civilization. We can either make changes now or have more extreme changes forced on us later.

Steve Gabell Dear Editor, About Those Loyalists: “The Making of a Province: Political Refugees” notes that the United Empire Loyalists who arrived in British North America at the end of the 18th century were not successful in creating an aristocratic society. That statement warrants further exploration, if only to highlight today’s hypocrisies and prejudices.

For its first half century, “Ontario” (Upper Canada, and then Canada West) was, by modern standards, a place in which commoners had few rights and little power. It was essentially a dictatorship, with leaders appointed because of their religion and social standing. It is hard to imagine today that leadership was held exclusively by members of the Church of England (Anglican), or that the power of that church was such that it was granted one-seventh of the Province’s land holdings.

Change eventually seeped into Ontario with the arrival of increasing numbers of people who were considered socially or politically undesirable: Methodists, Irish of both

Catholic and Protestant origin, and Americans of suspect loyalties.

The Loyalist establishment labelled them as untrustworthy agitators who needed to be held at bay for the good of society. That same language and reasoning has never quite gone out of style. It is still reflected today when accusations of “Trumpism” are thrown about as an accusation hurled against anyone whose view of the world doesn’t quite conform to that of the accuser. Elitism lives on, even under the ironic guise of employment in the name of supposedly openminded liberalism. Those who hurl it dismissively and venomously today would, in the Loyalist era, have thrown about terms like “Yankee” and “traitor” with equal intent and effect.

In time—after episodes of rebellion, repression, and hanging—some version of democracy took hold in the colony in the decade before Confederation. No longer could power and privilege be reserved for the select few, and nowhere was this more obvious than in the development of a public education system by Egerton Ryerson.

Ryerson—lately a target of statue-smashers for his influence on the residential school system—insisted that the route to progress lay through providing education to as many citizens as possible regardless of who they were.

That this latter fact is lost on those who view Ryerson narrowly as a tool of repression is another of history’s ironies.

His critics can do so only because they have been gifted the legacy of a free public education. A full 99 percent of Canadians are today considered literate—and we have forgotten why.

This is not to disparage the United Empire Loyalists.

The world they created was the product of their experiences, as sensible to them as it might be inconceivable to us. Perhaps unsurprisingly, those once-dispossessed refugees set out quickly to create a province where they themselves held power exclusively. Tolerance clearly had its limits, both then and now.

There is also a lesson here for those who today seek perfection by railing against the past. That past was never perfect—by their standards or our own—but it did create the foundational building blocks upon which lies our relatively peaceful and prosperous present.

And that is something we must not take for granted.

Who would have thought the familiar swish of the front door opening would have brought so much excitement and joy?

One by one, members of the Seniors’ Community Services Diners’ Club made their way into the dining room. Although the group was a smaller one to accommodate COVID protocol, the room was filled with conversation, music and the aroma of lunch cooking in the kitchen. For the first time in over 18 months, Seniors’ Community Services welcomed the community back into the

centre.

The pandemic forced our hand and our virtual reach became the glue that kept our community together. Our computer screens and smart phones became the lifeline for connecting clients to exercise, card games and trivia afternoons. Unfortunately, the Diners’ Club had no choice but to shut down during a time when we could no longer gather in person. As weeks turned into months, social isolation and loneliness became a concern. Humans, by nature, are social beings and although connecting virtually was filling some of the void, there was still work to do. Enter Jeff Underhill, Lucky Silva and their team at Shoeless Joe’s in Kemptville. Every Tuesday (Tasty Tuesday as we call them) over the last three months, 20 Diners’ Club meals were lovingly prepared by Jeff’s staff and delivered by SCS volun-

teers. Shoeless Joe’s not only provided something for seniors to look forward to each week, they gave the gift of connection and compassion, one act of kindness that spoke volumes to Seniors’ Community Services and those we serve.

Over the summer, our clients were also treated to fresh vegetables thanks to Kate Duggan of Klondike Farm. As her garden became more bountiful, Kate looked for a place to donate. She heard about SCS and knew it was the partnership she was looking for. Not only does Kate grow and donate, but every week she visits the office with baskets full of vegetables that are delivered right to our clients’ door. We all know the importance of eating well, especially the benefits of vegetables (reduces heart disease, healthy eyes, lowers blood pressure, improves immune health...and it makes your mom happy too!).

Local Optometrist Joins Campaign Dr. Carla Eamon of Dr. C.L. Eamon Optometrist is taking part in the World Sight Day Challenge during October to help give the gift of vision to people in underserved communities around the world.

Now in its 15th year, the World Sight Day Challenge is Optometry Giving Sight's largest annual fundraising campaign to address avoidable blindness caused by uncorrected refractive error – simply the need for an eye exam and glasses.

On World Sight Day (October 14), Dr. Eamon will hold a celebration to raise funds to help the more than 1.1 billion people who are unnecessarily blind or vision impaired simply because they don't have access to an eye exam and a pair of glasses.

This year's call to action is Love Your Eyes.

"I have supported Optometry Giving Sight for 15 years," said Dr. Eamon.

"Preventable blindness is a solvable problem and we are proud to help give better vision to those in need.

Everyone can make a difference and we are thrilled to be contributing to universal eye health."

Mythunderstandings An irregular column by David Shanahan

Misunderstanding or mythunderstanding?

Every now and again, someone for whom I normally have some respect is recorded saying something absolutely untrue, and it makes me wonder why they do it. One recent example was when American astrophysicist, Neil deGrasse Tyson, appeared in a YouTube video stating that Christians are people who rely on faith without evidence. He was contrasting them with scientists, who, he claimed, only believe what the evidence shows them.

Another statement by someone I respect, in this case C. S. Lewis, pointed out that not all statements made by scientists are scientific statements. Meaning that anyone, including respected figures like Tyson, cannot expect to have the same credibility when they make nonscientific statements as they do when speaking on their area of expertise. This doesn’t mean that everything they say, even then, should be taken as infallibly true, of course.

But in the context of Tyson’s claims about Christian faith, like so many other atheists, you would think they should know better, and maybe they do. Perhaps people like Tyson

and other atheists are happy to promote myth, rather than face facts.

I have repeatedly pointed out that Christianity is based on historical facts, on certainty based on evidence of many kinds. The New Testament consistently uses the word “know”, meaning to be sure, to be certain, to have evidence.

For example, Paul prayed for the Philippians “that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight”. [Philippians 1.9] He wrote to the Ephesians: “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people”.

[Ephesians 1.18] The Apostle John wrote to the early Christians about what he knew, emphasising his own experiences and certainty: “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life.

The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal

life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us.

And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ”. [1 John 1.1-3] And that is the testimony of every Christian since then.

Even in the old Testament, in one of the earliest books, we have Job say, in the middle of his severe trials: “I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth”. [Job 19.25] This is not a matter of what people call “blind faith”, the idea that we have to believe without evidence, without reason.

Faith, in the Christian context, means much more than that. It means to have trust, to know that something, or Someone, is trustworthy. And that trust is based on evidence, on both experience and external research and analysis.

History, eye witness testimony, as well as the experiences and testimony of millions of people of all ages, classes, education, ethnicity and culture, over millennia, agree on these things. It is simply irrational to believe that they were all deluded. It is believing

without evidence, and against the evidence, that they were.

Generally speaking, the arguments of atheists are themselves based on allegations, assumptions, and ignorance of what Christianity is all about.

They defiantly assert things that they cannot prove, and argue that science has debunked things that science is unable to discuss scientifically. In large part, atheistic arguments are founded on a refusal to accept that there is anything in existence other than what can be known through the senses, through observation and quantification. But this cannot even explain love, honour, selfsacrifice, the origin of life, the soul, in other words, most of

what makes us human.

When pressed, their arguments depend on blind faith, ironically. Phrases are used, such as “it seems that...”, “we can’t be absolutely sure, but...”.

But perhaps more arrogantly, they claim to have a monopoly on science, asserting that science and religion are opposed and contradictory. But modern science really began with Christians, or deists in general, who did science because they believed it was possible to do so. If, they argued, the universe is created by a Creator, it must have some structure, some “laws” which can be discovered through research and investigation. If they believed that the universe was the result of random and meaningless collections of atoms and molecules over endless time,

why would anyone expect to find any kind of structure and design there? Why would you even trust in your own mental capabilities, if you, also, are a result of random chance?

The fact is that both Christians and nonbelievers alike are to be found among the recipients of Nobel prizes in the sciences. They are both to be found in the highest echelons of academe. Science and religious faith are not mutually exclusive, no matter what atheists may claim. The facts prove otherwise.

So, let’s have a free and open discussion on these things. But let’s not continue to make claims and allegations that are baseless, without evidence, and unworthy of rational and intelligent people of good will.

Back to School Road Safety – Slow Down and be prepared to Stop As families prepare for students to go back to school, the North Grenville Road Safety Committee is reminding everyone to be safe as they travel to and from school – whether it be by active travel (walk or bike), or by car or bus.

Motorists should be prepared to slow down and stop for children and school buses. Motorists should also be watching for children walking or riding their bikes to school, particularly at road crossings.

Safe Walking Route Maps: The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark Public Health Unit along with their active school travel partners developed safe walking route maps families can use. If it isn’t feasible to walk the entire way, consider parking a block or two away from the school and walk the rest of the way. This will help reduce congestion in school parking lots and is a great way to be active.

School Zones and Community Safety Zones: Slowdown in school zones

North Grenville announces Strategic Plan Town Halls for September The Municipality of North Grenville is currently developing its next five-year strategic plan that will articulate the community’s vision for North Grenville and create a roadmap for how to get there.

Input by local residents and businesses is crucial to this plan. The community survey launched in August has been completed by approximately 1,400 residents and is still available in English and French (see www.northgrenville.ca/ vision).

Which brings us to one of our more pressing issues right now...apart from a totally unnecessary/unwanted election...the issue of vaccinations and the appearance of angry protests.

A Ms. M-E Robinson, in a letter to The Toronto Star said, 'The odds of dying from COVID-19 are so low for most people, that there is no justification for mandatory vaccinations in most workplaces.' She adds, 'There is no good reason why most unvaccinated individuals should have to chose between their job and the jab.' It is noteworthy that this person is writing from Edmonton. Ah yes, Alberta!

Where now, the righteously unjabbed are being offered $100 to get vaccinated.

Why? Perhaps the number of people in hospitals and

it is of utmost importance that community members and leaders have the opportunity to address priority areas. Ensuring that lived experiences and hopes for the future of the Municipality are included are fundamental to the development of the strategic plan.

To date, working with third-party consultant StrategyCorp, the Municipality has made considerable efforts to reach out to a variety of groups and leaders.

Ontario to require proof of vaccination in select settings, preparing to launch enhanced vaccine certificate and verification app

To further protect Ontarians as the Province continues to confront the Delta-driven fourth wave of the COVID-19, the government, in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health, will require people to be fully vaccinated and provide proof of their vaccination status to access certain businesses and settings starting September 22, 2021.

Requiring proof of vaccination in these settings reduces risk and is an important step to encourage every last eligible Ontarians to get their shot which is critical to protecting the Province’s hospital capacity, while also supporting businesses with the tools they need to keep customers safe, stay open and minimize disruptions. Premier Doug Ford explained "Based on the latest evidence and best advice, COVID-19 vaccine certificates give us the best chance to slow the spread of this virus while helping us to avoid further lockdowns.

If you haven’t received your first or second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, please do so today."

Proof of vaccination will be required in higher risk indoor public settings where face coverings cannot always be worn. Such spaces include: indoor service at restaurants and bars, nightclubs, meeting and event spaces, facilities used for sports and fitness activities, sporting events, casinos and other gaming establishments, concerts, music festivals, theatres and cinemas, strip clubs, bathhouses and sex clubs, and racing venues.

These mandatory requirements would not apply to outdoor settings where the risk of transmission is lower. In addition, these requirements will not apply to settings where people receive medical care, food from grocery stores, medical supplies and the like.

Aligned with public health measures currently in place, indoor masking policies will continue to remain in place.

Individuals who cannot receive the vaccine due to medical exemptions will be permitted entry with a doctor’s note until recognized medical exemptions can be integrated as part of a digital vaccine certificate. Children who are 11 years of age and younger and unable to be vaccinated will also be exempted from these requirements. For the period between September 22 and October 12, 2021, it is intended that people attending wedding or funeral receptions at meeting or event spaces will be able to provide a negative rapid antigen COVID-19 test from no more than 48 hours before the event as an alternative to proof of vaccination.

Ontario will develop and provide additional tools to improve user experience, efficiency and business supports in the coming weeks, including establishing alternative tools for people with no email, health card or ID. The government will work to support implementation of vaccine certificates for Indigenous communities whether or not they have opted to enter their data into COVaxON, while maintaining Indigenous data governance, control, access and possession principles.

Ontarians currently have access to a paper or PDF vaccine receipt that includes all relevant information to prove that they are fully vaccinated.

As of September 22, Ontarians will be required to show their vaccine receipt when entering designated settings along with another piece of photo identification, such as a driver’s licence or health card.

Ontario will also introduce an enhanced digital vaccine receipt that features a QR code, which is safe, more secure and with you wherever you go. This digital vaccine

receipt can be kept on a phone and easily used to show that you've been vaccinated if you need to. As the 2021-22 school year begins, it is critical to keep Ontario schools safe and students learning in person.

The Province will work with trusted public health units to use the existing COVaxON system to safely and securely confirm the vaccination status of students. The Province is committed to keeping parents informed about how their child’s COVID-19 vaccine information and enrollment data is being used to keep schools safe. This will equip local public health units with the information they need to ensure rapid case and contact management if required to limit disruptions in the event of cases or outbreaks and keep kids in class.

"We are already seeing a rise in the number of cases of COVD-19 as we head into the fall" said Dr. Kieran Moore, Chief Medical Officer of Health. Teenage Sex pushing boundaries in the Pandemic

If you are a parent or grandparent to teenagers, chances are you think the pandemic has them safely secluded at home – having inoculated them, you might say, from sexual encounters.

But that might be wishful thinking.

It’s been said, “It’s hard to prepare teenagers for life when they already know everything.” But even if they do have all knowledge at their fingertips, their bodies are way ahead of their brains.

The wiring of the teenage brain develops just the same, no matter the era. The pandemic’s “quaranteenagers” are programmed to test their boundaries, just like all who came before them. Until they reach their mid-20s, the prefrontal cortex that controls complex reasoning, impulse control, and planning is still developing. When it comes to sex, it’s a mistake to assume they are thinking rationally.

COVID-19 may be changing many things in life, but young people will always find ways to have sex, and with

kids flooding back to school for in-person learning, the conditions are ripe for pent-up sexual energy to be released.

High school nurse practitioners saw it happen during previous post-lockdown returns to the classroom. A school-based health centre in Connecticut reported a jump in cases of chlamydia, oral chlamydia, and gonorrhea shortly after students returned to school in March, 2021.

The problem is, in part, that adolescents haven’t had easy access to health care providers recently. Those who are becoming sexually active for the first time are likely missing out – unable to walk into a health counsellor’s office for confidential consultation, and even less likely to secure birth control, let alone testing services for sexually transmitted diseases.

A new study in the Journal of Adolescent Health reports major disruptions in services offered by physicians providing reproductive health services and testing, as well as a 43% reduction in adolescents

seeking care.

Sex is a squeamish topic, even for seasoned adults. For many, it is a very private matter. But for millions of young people living at home with little chance for privacy, even telehealth, which has boomed during the pandemic, has its limitations with teenagers.

For them, it is their circle of friends and their online experiences that shape their beliefs and decisions. Most teenagers can run circles around would-be protective parents who might have had some luck managing friends and online content at younger ages.

In times past, the church played a far greater role in determining societal views on sex and educating youth, or more precisely, pre-marital couples, on sexual matters.

Some parents have taken up more responsibility, but others hope that schools are filling the gap.

But while debates rage about the curriculum for sex education, those fertile teens are figuring it out for them-

selves – and the National Institutes of Health have published research that may pique your curiosity. The pandemic, you see, has generated an epiphany of ways that things we used to do in person being done now online, or without much interaction. That’s right, including sex.

A Canadian survey found that “pandemic stress actually drove up desire for sex with oneself, not with a partner.”

Italian researchers recently published a paper on the importance of the Internet on sexuality during COVID-19.

They write, “Using the Internet to maintain active sexual activity appeared to be an excellent alternative to diminish the distance between partners, or to increase online knowledge.” Their work suggests that today’s digital natives are especially adept at online dating, sexting, virtual sex, and other online activities.

So parents and grandparents, have a talk with your teens. You might learn something!

Ladies Golf League of Rideau Glen enjoy a fruitful August submitted by Cecile Fortier August has been a very fruitful month with the de Pencier tournament and pins going to numerous achievers. The weather, with its constant heat wave and humidity, was keeping the ladies in slow motion play while maintaining hydration and keeping cool by a variety of ways. Only one Tuesday was amiss, but in spite of the rain, some ladies did play.

Another month gone by and the summer season is dwindling down to a mere few weeks left in league play. The de Pencier tournament brought out the "cream of the crop" for this fun game. The winners in partnership were: Bonnie Thibeaudau and Suzanne Sampson who scored 47. There was a three-way tie for second place with a score of 49. The winner was determined by the best score on the hole with the highest degree of difficulty, which is number 18. So second place went to Maureen Fournier and Maryann Sunstrum. Honourable mention goes to the other two teams, Donna Lush with Gail Pattman; and Linda Thomson with Willie Brydges. Closest to the basket was Jenny Thibert with Tonakila Gordon. Only one team, Jan Fattizo with Susan Laewen, brought back their coloured ball .

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE WINNERS! Before announcing the birdies of the month, a special nomination of those who broke 100; 90; 80; and yes a 70! The feat of doing any of these is once in a lifetime. The repeat is to be expected after the original one. The first to break 70 with a score of 69 with the help of 5 BIRDIES----DRUM ROLL!!!!..... was LESLIE CHEAL! Huge kudos for this fabulous feat!

Breaking 80 was Donna Lush who had a birdie. Breaking 90 was Tonakila Gordon also with a birdie. Breaking 100 was Jenny Thibert and Louise Sherer. Kudos ladies! Birdies went to Yvonne Lane, Suzanne Sampson, Diane Charlebois, Kathy Hodgins, Nancy Lebrun (her very first one), Kathy Ranger, Georgia Crawford, Gail Shields, Kelly Cumming and Maureen Fournier. Birdies galore flew high! Kudos to all the winners!

September is the month for the Club Championship and sad to say it is the end of ladies’ league season of golf. Hoping that next year all will be back to normality in all endeavours.

The league, with its huge number of members, will strive for greatness and a calm, tranquil 2022!

Annual Kemptville Youth Centre Book Fair makes record sales

The Ontario government is reinstating renewal requirements for driver’s licences, licence plate stickers, Ontario Photo Cards, Ontario health cards, and other products that would have expired on or after March 1, 2020, but were extended to provide immediate relief to Ontarians during the COVID-19 pandemic. Those needing to renew their provincial documents are encouraged to use ServiceOntario’s convenient and easy-to-use online option.

To ensure everyone has enough time to renew, Ontario has extended the renewal deadlines for most driver’s licences, licence plate stickers, and Ontario Photo Cards and health cards until February 28, 2022. Heavy commercial vehicle owners will need to renew their vehicle validations by December 31, 2021. Novice licence holders (class G1, G2, M1 or M2) will have until December 31, 2022 to requalify for or upgrade their novice driver’s licence. People who have not renewed their products during the Extended Validity period will be required to pay Youth volunteers with some members of the KYC Board of Directors. Four decades of support Local COVID-19

by Jane Adams Next week, the WDMH team will bid a fond farewell to Connie McInnes. Connie has been supporting WDMH teams for 41 years. In fact, Connie has provided clerical support in almost every area of the hospital - from Admitting, to Physiotherapy, to Emergency, to Diagnostic Imaging, to Central Booking, and finally to Day Surgery!

“I’m pretty easy going, and I like to go with the flow,” says Connie. “When I look back, I don’t know where the time has gone.”

Born and raised in South

Mountain, Connie joined the WDMH team right out of high school after completing a co-op placement at the hospital. “I actually got the job before I finished my session,” she remembers. “That was a long time ago!”

Connie says her WDMH family has meant a lot. “I’ve had some real trials in my life, and they have been wonderful to me. They are like my second family and WDMH is my second home.”

She has no retirement plan, other than “not to come to work”! She will enjoy not having to get up for 6 am shifts, and plans to spend more time with her grandchildren.

Vaccine Status Report

LGL Health Unit Statistics: Of the region’s population 12 years of age and over, 91.7% have first doses and 85.8% have second doses (as of August 30, 2021). 904 first doses were administered last week. In youth 12–17, 81.4% have first doses and 71.2% have second doses. In ages 18–29, 73.9% have first doses and 63.2% have second doses.

We encourage those 18–29 to check out the options for getting vaccinated below.

Provincial Third Booster Doses for Selected Populations: Those eligible for a third dose are able to bring a letter into one of our clinics from their physician stating they are eligible.

How to Get Vaccinated: All those born in 2009 and earlier are eligible for a first dose anytime and can get a second dose: 21 days after first dose of Pfizer 28 days after first dose of Moderna (NOW approved for anyone born 2009 and earlier) 8 weeks after first dose of AstraZeneca (18+) Remember it is important to continue to follow precautions if you have one or even two vaccine doses. We need to keep protecting each other until we are all fully vaccinated.

Birds and animals out of the front window

Where has the year gone, as we speed into September and another month of the persisting pandemic as well as the upcoming Federal Election? Fortunately, we have our garden birds and animals to draw our attention away from these somewhat stressful events and allow us to maintain some sort of September 8 2021

normality in our lives. Yes, a real mental break is provided for us without making any real effort. We just have to look outside our front window where our hanging feeders and bird bath provide us the joy of being able to watch and observe our birds and small animals going about their daily business. On our

hanging window feeders, the Hummingbirds are competing at their feeder with the Wasps, and the Woodpeckers, Chickadees, and Nuthatches for the peanuts, whilst the Goldfinches are content with the Nijer seed. A small distance from the house our other "mixed bird seed" feeders are competed for by Blue17

jays, Cardinals, Chipping Sparrows and other birds, as well as the Red, Black and Grey Squirrels and our little buddies, the Chipmunks! We have a full cast of actors to keep us occupied, amused and amazed as they go about their daily chore of survival, be it competing for food, water or shelter, interspersed with the rearing and teaching of their young.

With the recent hot days, our water bowl and birdbath have seen more activity than usual from both the birds and the animals which delight in drinking and also splashing about in them. The picture that I have included is one taken by my wife which illustrates how lucky we are to be able see and catch on camera some of our garden friends.

The female Cardinal is watching the antics of a Chipping Sparrow in the water and, behind them both, you can just spot one of our "Chippies" ( Chipmunk) busying himself in the foliage. As you can see, never a dull moment

For this event, Liane created an Artists' Menu on which was something named Picasso's Palette, aka, a fantastic Mediterranean Plate. It is one of my most favorite dishes in the whole world and I thought you might be interested in the recipe. It is labour-intensive, which is why it is difficult to serve at our restaurant on an ongoing basis; however, it involves no cooking, other than warming up some Pita or Naam Bread.

All the following ingredients are available locally.

Ingredients, per plate ·3-4 each, black and green pitted olives ·3 slices of Prosciutto ·3-5 slices of Salami ·1 ramekin each of Hummus and Tzatziki ·5-6 dried apricots ·A goodly chunk each of Feta Cheese and of the Pâté or Terrine of your choice ·3-4 Dolmades (stuffed grape leaves) ·½ tomato, sliced and placed on top of some seasonal greens of your choice ·6-8 Pita or Naan bread points (bread cut in triangles) 18

·Several squirts of Balsamic reduction on the tomato and greens Preparation This dish deserves your entire creativity in placing the ingredients on a LARGE PLATE in a pleasing manner, for example: 1. Place the greens and tomato smack dab in the middle of your plate and decorate with Balsamic reduction.

2. Place the ramekins next to the tomato and greens.

3. Distribute the rest of the ingredients all around your centre piece.

4. Lightly warm the triangles of Pita or Naan in the microwave and place around the perimeter of the place just prior to serving to your appreciative audience.

You might wish to set up an assembly line if you have several guests, with each plate receiving its bread last. I had a lovely Merlot to accompany my lunch and left absolutely nothing, nada, rien, on the plate. Now, I hate to tell you, but this is a relatively healthy meal. It is also delicious and satisfying.

IPM 2022 launches Quilt Block Challenge

The International Plowing Match (IPM) is coming to North Grenville September 20-24, 2022 and will include a Quilting Showcase in our IPM Quilting Lifestyles Tent. The IPM will be located on the former Kemptville College Campus.

The IPM Quilting Lifestyles Tent will be a very popular area and of interest to area quilters and quilt enthusiasts who will see submitted quilts, demonstrations and be able shop in the vendor area.

Leading up to the IPM, there will be a few quilt-related activities that quilters and quilt enthusiasts can visit and participate in. Available now is the IPM 2022 Quilt Block Challenge. Participants can purchase a kit and create a quilt block to be included in a beautiful IPM 2022 Quilt. Each kit contains four squares of cotton fabric, contest rules and entry form. Kits are available for $12.00 at different locations, including locally at The Kemptville Fabric Shoppe for pickup. There is also an online order option; for an additional $2, kits can be ordered by email and delivered by Canada Post. Order online and make online payment by e transfer to quiltsipm2022@gmail.com The final completed block submission deadline is October 31, 2021. Winners will be announced by December 24, 2021.

The QBC Theme is Home on the Farm: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow.

Watch for information to come on the “Home on the Farm Quilt Show” which will take place in North Grenville in August 2022. The “Home on the Farm Quilt Show” will include quilts of different categories that be on display and judged, a vendor mall showcasing items of interest to quilters, a tea room and demonstrations. We look forward to having this quality quilt show in our area. There were many quilts made during the pandemic and we look forward to seeing the completed works.

What is the International Plowing Match & Rural Expo?

The International Plowing Match (IPM) held annually in Ontario is North America's largest outdoor agricultural and rural expo. It is usually held the third week of September and usually attracts more than 80,000 visitors over the 5-day event.

The IPM is organized and run by a local volunteer committee and the Ontario Plowmen's Association (OPA).

Volunteers pick up sampling slack in wake of COVID-19

RVCA staff did all the work, while he enjoyed a day on the water with pleasant company and some interesting conversations. These days, it’s a different story.

With the spring’s COVID-19 restrictions preventing staff from congregating on the boat – and limiting the number of students RVCA could hire – volunteers like Gordon have been asked to fill in the gaps.

Before the pandemic, the Wolfe Lake Association’s water quality director had a pretty good gig with the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority: about once a month, RVCA staff showed up with their equipment, and he drove them around the lake in his pontoon boat to collect their samples.

RVCA’s acting surface water quality co-ordinator Haley Matschke drops off the equipment in the morning before she and her team head out to sample a neighbouring lake. She gives him a quick refresher on using the equipment, then Gordon spends five or six hours in the boat documenting levels of nitrogen and phosphorus, dissolved oxygen, water temperature and more. He returns the equipment and data to Haley at the end of the day.

“It’s a little nerve wracking,” laughed Gordon, who has lived on the lake yearround since 2010. “You’re nervous you’ll forget something or do something wrong.”

So far, so good – but he’s ready for the old system to return. “I’m looking forward to just being the driver again,” he said.

This is just one of the many ways RVCA has had to adapt to pandemic restrictions. In the case of lake sampling, about 15 volunteers like Gordon have stepped up to ensure water quality issues

continue to be monitored, and that new problems are discovered early.

Other programs have not been able to pivot quite so seamlessly. City Stream Watch, for example, relies on groups of volunteers to help with invasive species removals, garbage clean-ups and stream health monitoring. The program has been temporarily paused until it’s safe to bring large groups together. City Stream Watch program manager Jennifer Lamoureux is hopeful they will be able to restart the program next spring.

In the meantime, the RVCA is thankful for all the help it can get to ensure a healthy, thriving watershed for all.

“We’re so grateful to the volunteers who were willing to pivot to keep our programs going,” said Haley.

“We know it’s not an easy job. The watershed is a better place with these volunteers watching out on our behalf.”

Low Cost Rabies Vaccination Clinics to be held

by LGL Health Unit Rabies is a deadly disease that can be prevented. Help prevent the spread of rabies by vaccinating your pet dog or cat.

Together with partner veterinarians and municipalities, the Health Unit is offering low-cost Rabies Vaccination Clinics throughout the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark Counties. These Rabies Vaccination Clinics will be held on September 22 and 29. Not all area vets have the capacity to participate in the low cost clinics due to the pandemic, so some areas where clinics operated previously may not have a clinic this year. To find the locations where clinics will be held, call 1-800-660-5853 or visit the Health Unit’s Low-Cost Rabies Vaccination Clinic page. Vaccinations are $20 cash only. Pets must be on a leash or in a carrier.

The goal of hosting these clinics is to help provide rabies vaccinations to as many cats and dogs as possible. As a pet owner, you are responsible for keeping your pet’s vaccination certificate. Dog and cats must be vaccinated against rabies - It’s the law! It is important that pet cats or dogs remain up-to-date with their rabies vaccination as they could be at risk of getting rabies. By increasing the vaccination coverage in pets, we will help to minimize the potential transmission of rabies to humans.

In addition, hunters preparing for the hunting season are reminded to get their dogs vaccinated against rabies. While running in the bush, hunting dogs have the potential of interacting with wild life that may have rabies. To help protect some wild animals against rabies, the Ministry of Natural Resources releases bait in certain areas in August. Stay away from wild or stray animals. If you or any member of your family has been bitten, scratched or in contact with a potentially rabid animal, contact your local Health Unit, health care provider, or go to your local emergency health care department immediately.
