Executive update
Carl Soderlund President,
It’s been a dynamic start to 2026, offering a chance to reflect on a period already filled with inspiration, collaboration, and celebration across our industry.
March marked the return of the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (MIFGS), and what a remarkable show it was. Despite some challenging conditions, plenty of rain, strong winds, and thankfully a welcome touch of sunshine to finish, it was fantastic to see the event come together so successfully.
An impressive 108,672 attendees joined us over five days at the Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens. From hands-on workshops and inspiring talks to vibrant Show Gardens and glowing twilight experiences, the 2026 Show was filled with creativity, connection, and inspiration at every turn.
It was a fantastic showcase of horticulture, construction, landscape, design, and industry excellence. A sincere thank you to everyone involved who contributed to making MIFGS such a success.
It was particularly rewarding to see the continued growth and impact of the Schools’ Area, with Urban Discovery certainly delivering, alongside the exceptional standard of the Achievable Gardens. NGIV created an outstanding Green Room experience, effectively supporting our key partners while continuing to strengthen and evolve relationships. An incredible effort all round.
INDUSTRY PARTNERS
NGIV was proud to welcome many Victorian Members of Parliament during the event, providing meaningful advocacy opportunities and reinforcing the value of horticulture to Victoria’s economy, environment, and communities. We were especially pleased to receive a commitment during the opening of MIFGS from a future Liberal and Nationals Government to invest $15 million in establishing an NGIV-led Horticulture Centre of Excellence. This initiative will build workforce capability, strengthen food production, and develop solutions to restore Victoria’s urban tree canopy.
A full recap of MIFGS, along with details of this exciting announcement from the Coalition, can be found later in this issue of Groundswell
March also saw NGIV deliver two new benefits for our members. Firstly, NGIV’s Industry Marketplace, a new online platform designed exclusively for members to buy and sell industry-specific equipment, tools, and goods is now live. Whether you’re looking to rehome nursery equipment or snap up a second-hand gem, the Industry Marketplace provides a trusted, members-only space to do so.
Secondly, we’re pleased to be working with Enhance Nursery Solutions (ENS) to provide tailored support to our full member retailer

businesses. As experts in this field, ENS can assist with merchandising, ordering, and plant care within retail nurseries. Full NGIV membership now includes complimentary access to over-the-phone support from the ENS team.
Continuing the theme of “twos”, we also held two Trade Days in March, both strong indicators of industry momentum. Early March saw a solid turnout and plenty of energy as buyers began stocking up for autumn, while the 31 March event had a more relaxed yet productive feel following the conclusion of MIFGS 2026. Trade Day remains an unmatched opportunity to connect, do business, and stay in tune with the rhythm of the industry. We thank all our stand holders, buyers, and staff who make this event a success month after month.
Beyond Trade Day, our events calendar has been in full swing. Our second International Women’s Day Breakfast at Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne (RBGC) was a sell-out, with 115 women in attendance. MC’d by NGIV Director Suzie Shearer, the event was warmly received, with attendees praising the atmosphere, thoughtful discussions, and inspiring guest speakers, including Jane Edmanson OAM, Jen Reid, and Connie Cao.
The morning brought together women from across the industry to celebrate achievements, share stories, and connect over a shared passion for horticulture, followed by a tour of the gardens. A special thank you to our MC, speakers, and RBGC for hosting. This flagship event continues to showcase the strength, innovation, and collaboration across our sector.
We’re also excited to be adding another chapter to NGIV’s history. To help capture the past 35–40 years, we’ve engaged professional historian Stella Barber. She will document the stories, milestones, and people who have shaped this journey, culminating in a hardcover book available for members to purchase later this year.
As always, thank you to our members, partners, and supporters for your continued engagement and contributions. We’re proud of all we’ve achieved so far in 2026 and look forward to the many opportunities still to come.

MIFGS 2026 delivers strong impact
The 2026 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (MIFGS) has wrapped as one of the most successful events in recent years, attracting more than 108,000 visitors across five days at the Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens.
This year’s Show embraced a contemporary creative direction inspired by a kaleidoscope, encouraging visitors to explore evolving perspectives in landscape design, sustainability, and floral artistry. The result was a dynamic and engaging showcase that reinforced the growing relevance of horticulture in shaping liveable, resilient urban environments.
Show Gardens reflect changing outdoor lifestyles
The Show Garden Competition once again demonstrated the depth of design talent within the industry. Seven well-acclaimed
and recognised designers delivered gardens that combined strong visual impact with meaningful narratives around connection, wellbeing, and biodiversity.
Matt York of Ratio was awarded the City of Melbourne Award of Excellence for Best in Show for We the Wild, a coastalinspired garden that highlighted how even compact spaces can support ecological outcomes while maintaining strong design appeal.
York also received the Horticultural Media Association Award for Best Use of Plant Life. Joel Barnett’s je ne sais quoi was

Complementing the feature gardens, competitions across Boutique, Balcony and Border Garden categories showcased innovation in small-space and urban design. The Challenger Achievable Gardens program continued to highlight emerging talent and practical, sustainable garden solutions.
Floral Exhibits Showcase industry innovation
Inside the Royal Exhibition Building, the Great Hall of Flowers remained a major drawcard, presenting large-scale floral installations beneath the historic dome.
A standout addition in 2026 was Growers Avenue, which brought the concept of an urban flower farm to life. The feature highlighted Australian-grown flowers from both small-scale regenerative growers and large producers.
The Petal Project further elevated the floral program, encouraging collaboration between growers and florists to showcase individual flower varieties through contemporary installations. Live competitions and judged displays provided additional opportunities to highlight industry skill and creativity

Investing in the next generation
Student competitions and emerging designer categories played a key role in this year’s program. The Chrysco Flowers student competitions, Botanical Moments, Hanging Installation and Hanging Basket competitions all recognised rising talent and reinforced the importance of industry pathways.
The Challenger Achievable Gardens program, now in its 19th year, remained a centrepiece of NGIV’s contribution to workforce development. Twelve gardens were designed and constructed on-site by students from leading education providers across Victoria.
The Excellence Award was presented to A Woman’s Garden, designed by Megan Blair, Sarah Jones and Georgina Honner from The Gordon.
NGIV presence strengthens industry visibility
NGIV maintained a strong and visible presence throughout the Show, delivering a range of initiatives designed to engage members, industry stakeholders and policymakers.
The Wildplace Children’s Garden
A key highlight was The Wildplace Children’s Garden, an immersive play space designed by Urban Discovery. The garden combined natural materials with Indigenous perspectives on caring for Country, encouraging children to engage with nature through exploration and play.
Supported by Agriculture Victoria, Zoos Victoria and Foodcube, the garden demonstrated the broader social and environmental value of horticulture. Contributions from NGIV members were instrumental in bringing the space to life.
The Green Room
The NGIV Green Room returned for its third year, providing a dedicated space for meetings, networking and industry engagement.

The space welcomed a diverse cross-section of the horticulture sector, along with media and key stakeholders. Plant of the Year presentations were well received, and the Green Room also facilitated a number of important advocacy discussions.
Challenger Achievable Gardens
The Achievable Gardens program continued to attract strong visitor interest, with many attendees surprised to learn the gardens were created by students.
The program not only showcases emerging talent but also highlights the strength of Victoria’s horticultural education sector and the importance of continued investment in skills development.
Advocacy outcomes and political engagement
MIFGS 2026 provided a valuable platform for advocacy, with more than 40 Victorian Members of Parliament attending the Show.
Through guided tours, discussions and targeted engagement, NGIV highlighted key industry priorities and the role of horticulture in supporting public health, green infrastructure and economic growth.
A significant announcement during the Show included a commitment from a future Liberal and Nationals Government to invest $15 million in establishing an NGIV-led Horticulture Centre of Excellence.
This initiative aims to strengthen workforce capability, enhance food production and support the restoration of Victoria’s urban tree canopy.
A strong platform for industry growth
The success of MIFGS 2026 reflects the strength, innovation and collaboration across Victoria’s horticulture sector.
NGIV extends its thanks to all members, partners and volunteers who contributed to the event. Their involvement ensured a strong and impactful industry presence across all areas of the Show.
With continued momentum and growing public engagement, MIFGS remains one of the industry’s most important platforms for connection, advocacy and inspiration.
NGIV looks forward to building on this success in 2027.

New centre of excellence to help grow a greener Victoria
A future Liberal and Nationals Government will invest $15 million to establish the Nursery and Garden Industry Victoria (NGIV) led Horticulture Centre of Excellence, building workforce capability, strengthening food production, and developing solutions to restore Victoria’s urban tree canopy.
Shadow Minister for Agriculture Emma Kealy said the Centre would secure Victoria’s position as a national leader in horticulture, while delivering real benefits for communities, the environment, and the economy.
“Victoria’s horticulture sector is a powerhouse. It’s worth nearly $4 billion to our economy and contributes around 30 per cent of Australia’s total horticulture value,” Ms Kealy said.
“It supports tens of thousands of jobs across regional and peri-urban communities, underpins our food security, and plays a vital role in improving the liveability and sustainability of our cities and towns. Right now, however, it’s being taken for granted.”
Despite its importance, the sector faces growing pressures including workforce shortages, rising costs, climate disruption,
supply chain instability, and increasing biosecurity risks.
“Under Labor, opportunities to strengthen our horticulture sector and showcase our Victorian-grown innovations in green industries have been missed,” Ms Kealy said.
The Centre of Excellence will bring together industry, research, and training to:
» Build a future-ready horticulture workforce and address critical labour shortages.
» Drive innovation and strengthen Victoria’s leadership in plant-based industries.
» Improve productivity and resilience for growers.
» Support biodiversity, urban greening and climate adaptation.
A key focus of the Centre will be to help tackle the decline of urban tree canopy and address the growing heat challenges facing Victoria’s cities and towns.
“This is a smart, targeted investment that delivers long-term returns to support more jobs, better skills, stronger communities and a healthier environment,” Ms Kealy said.
“The Centre will also help bridge the gap between research and real-world outcomes by improving coordination across government, industry and practitioners.
“The Liberals and Nationals will back our growers, grow our workforce and secure the future of Victoria’s vital horticultural sector.”

Superior substrates and the microbial edge: Fernland’s winning combination
By Patrick Gorman, Fernland
These traits provide reliable nutrient availability throughout the crop cycle, minimise pH drift, reduce nitrogen immobilisation, and support stronger disease resistance. Growers benefit from healthier roots, better uniformity, and fewer adjustments – ideal for propagation, potted stock, and advanced lines.
A recent trial on seed-grown Alexander Palms in 24 cell trays highlighted coir’s advantages. After 110 days, plants grown in Fernland GrowRite Coir produced:
» 50% greater root mass – averaging 5.2 grams per root ball
» 10% greater total plant mass – averaging 23.9 grams per plant
This was compared to the standard peat mix. The extra root mass drives improved nutrient uptake, faster growth
Coir has become a premium soilless growing medium for Australian nurseries, delivering more consistent results than traditional pinebark, woodfibre, or peat-based mixes. High-quality coir, such as Fernland’s GrowRite range, starts with a near-neutral pH of around 6.5, offers high cation exchange capacity (CEC), excellent water-holding capacity, and long-term structural stability due to its high lignin content.
to specification, quicker dispatch or potting-up, and greater resilience in the landscape.
Elevating coir performance with Fernland’s FloraTech Biostimulants
Although coir is an excellent inert substrate, it lacks the natural microbial life found in bark or soil. Fernland’s FloraTech Stimulate and Rejuvenate address this perfectly, turning coir into a biologically active, high-performance medium.
FloraTech Stimulate is a live microbial soil activator with multiple strains of beneficial bacteria. Applied as a soil drench, it rapidly multiplies microbial populations, enhances phosphorus and potassium availability, improves aeration, boosts water retention, and helps suppress soil-borne pathogens.
Alexander Palm grown in peat is healthy but lacks the root structure and integrity seen in the Coir Trials.
Alexander Palm grown in GrowRite Coir has 50% greater root mass and structure.
FloraTech Rejuvenate is an organic root booster containing seaweed extract, humates, amino acids, carbohydrates, and vitamins. It accelerates root growth, improves nutrient uptake, enhances soil structure, and supports faster establishment –especially valuable in coir systems.
A practical nursery trial conducted on Lomandra Lime Tuff (potted 9 December 2025) tested the combination of Stimulate (5 ml/L) + Rejuvenate (5 ml/L) applied as a combined soil drench on the 15th December 2025 and the 13th January 2026. Plants were assessed on 19th February 2026 after mechanical soil removal and thorough washing.
Results showed:
» Control – Average total plant mass: 95.5 g | Root mass: 30.3 g
» Stimulate + Rejuvenate – Average total plant mass: 114.2 g | Root mass: 38.1 g
This delivered 20% more total plant mass and 25.7% greater root mass
These improvements are allowing plants to reach pot root-wrap faster, hit market specifications sooner, and complete more production rotations per year in the same real estate. Treated plants also show increased resilience to abiotic stresses such as drought, salinity, and fluctuating pH or EC levels – resulting in healthier, more uniform stock with reduced grow times and lower losses.
When paired with Fernland GrowRite Coir, the FloraTech Stimulate + Rejuvenate program delivers the best of both worlds: the stable physical and chemical properties of premium coir combined with enhanced biological activity and powerful
root stimulation from the biostimulants. Nurseries benefit from reliable pH stability, superior nutrient efficiency, explosive root development, faster plant growth, and greater uniformity – resulting in stronger, more resilient plants, reduced production costs, and improved profitability from propagation through to sale.
Fernland is committed to supporting Australian growers with premium coir, proven biostimulants, and practical advice. Speak with the Fernland team or connect with fellow growers already using this system to discover how it can give your nursery the growing advantage.
The NGIV has been a long time supporter of the Moshie Lean Leaders Program since its inception nearly 10 years ago as a way to increase efficiency, productivity, cost management and leadership skills in members’ businesses.
In 2025, the NGIV supported a cohort of 4 full member businesses with 25% subsidised scholarships into the program. These businesses weren't struggling; They were operating, delivering to their customers while battling rising costs, drops in productivity and other businesses challenges. As a result of the program, these 4 businesses identified a combined net benefit to their businesses of over $500,000 realisable within 12 months.
By stepping back from daily operations and applying Moshie’s structured improvement tools, participants were able to see their businesses more clearly. Participants acted on what they found throughout the program to make real change happen, with many of these changes coming from reviewing small parts of a process and questioning why we do things the way we do them.
At JFT Nurseries, Michael mapped a process that had rarely been questioned. 100,000 knots tied by hand annually, and a significant part labour cost in one of Australia’s most highly regarded bare rooted tree nursery. Reviewing this process, Michael proposed some changes to the process that would save significant time and money, with the cost of the change paying for itself within 9 weeks.
Once I measured it properly, the opportunity became very clear
By breaking down turf harvest and maintenance processes, Jimmy Lusk from Lilydale Turf identified 5 figure annual fuel savings as well as labour hours that could be used to bring more value to the business.
By focusing on where my time goes in my day, I’ve been able to help my team achieve a lot more and get more done.
– Jimmy, Lilydale Turf
Warwick from Bundameer Nursery improved plant quality, reduced waste and created more consistent team performance. By reviewing the process of stock laying out, Warwick identified hundreds of wasted labour hours and used the tools to communicate this back to the business to get them on board for change.
We’ve always known there were inefficiencies. Lean Leaders gave us a way to understand and address them.
” “ ”
– Warwick, Bundameer Nursery
Alongside operational gains, the group also gained valuable leadership skills, team buy in for change and significant cost savings. Across the four businesses, $500k – $1m of cost savings were identified.
The NGIV is proud of the impact the program has had on our members and look forward to supporting scholarships in 2026.
– Craig Taberner, CEO, NGIV
“ ” “ ”
At Doynes, Kevin found nearly tens of thousands of dollars in net benefit to the business by reviewing key process from planting, picking and staff movement — not from one big problem, but from small everyday inefficiencies.
I’ve put other staff from Doynes into Lean leaders but it wasn’t until I as a Senior Leader completed the program that I fully appreciated the impact it has.

NGIV celebrates International Women’s Day
There are moments in this industry that make you pause and reflect on the people, the purpose, and the privilege of being part of something bigger. The 2026 International Women’s Day event was one of those moments.
Held at the stunning Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, Cranbourne, the event brought together 110 women from across the horticulture sector for a day defined by energy, connection and unapologetic joy. Surrounded by more than 170,000 native plants, the setting was a fitting backdrop for a celebration of the individuals who nurture, shape and sustain our industry every day.
The atmosphere was vibrant from the outset. This was not a quiet gathering, it was a room filled with laughter, shared experiences and a palpable sense of belonging. It served as a powerful reminder of the important role women play across every corner of horticulture, from production to retail, design to research, and everything in between.
It is no coincidence that so many women are drawn to this industry. The qualities that underpin great horticulture, nurturing, resilience, care, adaptability and a willingness to invest time and effort for long-term growth are the very same qualities reflected in the women who work within it. Whether tending a single plant or managing a large-scale operation, these traits are evident daily.
A highlight of the event was the panel discussion featuring Jane Edmanson OAM, Connie Cao and Jenn Reed. Their insights, honesty and passion resonated strongly with attendees, sparking both inspiration and practical takeaways. Feedback confirmed what was clear on the day: the speakers, the venue and the opportunity to connect with peers were standout elements.
And one theme stood out above all: community. Just as plants thrive with the right environment and support, so too do people And like any thriving ecosystem, horticulture depends on connection on individuals coming together, sharing knowledge, and supporting one another to grow.
This event was a powerful reminder that when that happens, the results are extraordinary.
Of course, events like this don’t happen in isolation. They are the result of collaboration, trust, and a shared commitment. Sincere thanks to everyone involved for their support in bringing the event to life, as well as to all the speakers and participants who contributed so generously. This includes NGIV Director Suzie Shearer, who MCed the event with great conviction.
Beyond plants: Why people and culture are the real growth drivers in garden centres and nurseries
By Dr. James Zois
Walk into any successful garden centre and you’ll notice something immediately different about how they operate. It’s not just the quality of plants that stand out – it’s the feeling they create.
The atmosphere is welcoming. Staff greet customers with genuine enthusiasm and interest in hearing their story. Advice is shared generously. Customers linger, ask questions, and often leave with more than they planned for.
Make no mistake about it, this is no accident. It’s a dedication to building a culture that customers can feel. While many nurseries focus heavily on product range, pricing and foot traffic, the real differentiator in today’s market is something far less visible but far more powerful: people, culture and the environment they create when it all comes together
Customer experience drives loyalty
Garden centres are uniquely positioned in retail. Unlike many other industries, customers are not just buying a product –they are investing in a hobby, a lifestyle, or even a dream for their home.
A knowledgeable and enthusiastic team member who takes the time to listen, offer advice and share their passion can turn a simple purchase into a memorable experience. Those experiences are what drive repeat visits, word-of-mouth referrals and in the long term, loyal communities that build your business.
It starts with leaders
What many business owners underestimate is how strongly leadership behaviour shapes the energy of their teams When leaders are visible, supportive and clear about expectations, teams tend to show greater ownership, initiative and pride in their work. When leadership is inconsistent or overly transactional, the customer experience often follows in the same light. Customers feel this difference instantly. It’s our innate ability to sense when something is “not quiet right” or alternatively “makes them feel like they belong.”
Culture is not built through posters or slogans — it is built through the everyday behaviours leaders model and reinforce.
Transactional retail vs experiential retail
A transactional retail model focuses on quick sales: customer in, product purchased, customer out. Garden centres and nurseries have a much more powerful opportunity to connect with their clients and focus on the overall experience, also known as the “customer-centric approach.”
Experiential retail encourages discovery, learning and connection It invites customers to ask questions, attend workshops, share
photos of their gardens and return regularly for inspiration and conversation. The experience is more of a journey and less of a destination. In experiential retail, the team becomes part educator, part guide and part community builder.
Nurseries as community hubs
The most successful nurseries increasingly operate as community hubs. They host workshops, support local gardening groups, partner with schools and create spaces where people can connect through a shared love of plants and outdoor living.
Plants may bring customers through the gate, but it is people, connection and experience that bring them back.
In the long run, the nurseries that grow the strongest businesses will not simply be those with the best stock — they will be those that cultivate the best teams and the most vibrant cultures.
Because when people flourish, businesses grow.

Perfect Conditions, Perfect Company: NGIV Golf Day Classic 2026
The fairways of the Mornington Peninsula were buzzing on Friday 13 February as the 2026 NGIV Golf Day Classic returned in style at RACV Cape Schanck Resort, delivering a sold-out day of golf, networking and industry camaraderie.
With 108 registered, the event once again demonstrated its reputation as one of the horticulture industry’s most popular networking days. The spectacular coastal course at Cape Schanck provided a fitting backdrop as growers, suppliers and industry partners gathered for a relaxed day of competition and connection.
From the first drive to the final putt, the atmosphere was energetic and social. Across the course, 27 hole sponsors helped bring the event to life, providing strong visibility while creating engaging touchpoints for players throughout the day. Their support played a key role in the event’s success, highlighting the strong partnerships that underpin NGIV.
Friendly Competition on the Fairways
Competition was lively throughout the tournament, with teams battling it out for top honours across the course.
18-Hole Results
» 1st Place: Matt Underwood, Jon Noonan, Shane Male and Blaire Whitten
» 2nd Place: Jared Vanderuit, Tony Green, Nathan Palmer and Jess Buckmaster
» 3rd Place: Chris England, Grant Rankin, Max Piotrowski and Adam Delarue
For those taking part in the shorter format, the 9-hole competition also delivered some impressive play.
9-Hole Winners
» Josh Kyne, Bruce Yeland, Will Schneidman and Lizzie Earl
New Challenges Added to the Fun
A range of new novelty competitions injected extra energy into the day. Participants embraced the light-hearted challenges scattered across the course, including:
» An AI photo challenge featuring edited team photos
» The Kids Club longest drive challenge
» The Knock the Croc challenge
Adding to the experience, was the Garden City Plastics sponsored drinks cart, ensuring players stayed refreshed during the morning’s play.
Before tee-off, Heath set the tone as MC, delivering a humorous and engaging briefing that had players ready for a day of friendly rivalry.
From Fairways to Brewery
Following the golf, players headed a short distance down the road to St Andrews Brewery in Fingal for lunch and presentations. The split-venue format proved a winning formula, transitioning the day from competition to connection.
Over pizza and cold drinks, the relaxed brewery setting created the perfect environment for informal networking and industry conversations, reinforcing the core purpose of the NGIV Golf Day.
A Strong Industry Event
The 2026 Golf Day achieved its key objectives: delivering a well-organised, engaging event while strengthening connections across the horticulture industry. The day reached full capacity, sponsor participation remained strong, and feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive.
More importantly, the event once again demonstrated the value of bringing the industry together outside the workplace — creating space for relationships, collaboration and a bit of healthy competition.
With strong attendance, enthusiastic sponsors and plenty of laughs along the way, the NGIV Golf Day Classic continues to cement its place as a flagship networking event on the industry calendar.

AusChem vs ACUP: What’s the difference?
If you work with agricultural chemicals in Victoria, understanding the difference between AusChem training and an ACUP is essential.
To clarify the difference between AusChem and ACUP, the below information may shed some light on what they both are and how AusChem certificates can lead to you being able to apply for a Victorian Agricultural Chemical User Permit (ACUP)
AusChem has become the industry standard in AgVet chemical training that addresses the use of chemicals, as well as chemical storage and handling. It was previously known as the Farm Chemical Users Course.
AusChem certifies the delivery of training provided by its endorsed trainers. Whether it is a TAFE or private Registered Training Provider (RTO), AusChem ensures that the training meets the required standards for many industry quality assurance programs, and that participants can apply for the Victorian Agricultural Chemical User Permit (ACUP) once completed.
At its core, all AusChem training includes AHCCHM307 Prepare and apply chemicals to control pests, weeds and diseases and AHCCHM304 Transport and store chemicals These units are both nationally accredited and address the skills and knowledge required to safely prepare and apply chemicals, including the transport and storage of chemicals, to an industry recognised standard.
ACUP, or Agricultural Chemical User Permit, is a permit issued by Agriculture Victoria to a person that gives authority to:
» Purchase specified ‘restricted supply’ chemicals in Victoria
» Use specified ‘restricted use’ chemicals in Victoria
You must undertake relevant training before you can apply for and hold an ACUP.
The training requirement for the ACUP is a course that includes the following two nationally accredited units:
» AHCCHM307 Prepare and apply chemicals to control pests, weeds and diseases
» AHCCHM304 Transport and store chemicals
A standard ACUP is required for anyone using Schedule 7 poisons (dangerous poisons), or chemicals that contain any of the following:
» atrazine, metham sodium, or ester formulations of MCPA, 2,4-D, 2,4-DB or triclopyr
Endorsements to the ACUP are required for the following chemical use:
» 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) or PAPP (4-aminopropiophenone)
» pindone concentrate (2.5% or greater) for the preparation of baits
» gaseous methyl bromide
» phosphine formulated as liquefied gas
» timber treatment copper chromium arsenic (CCA)
All ACUPs are issued for 10 years, with no further training required during this period to maintain the permit issued.
Holding an ACUP does not permit you to use agricultural chemicals on another person’s property or crop as a contractor
A Commercial Operator’s Licence is required to undertake this task.
In summary, AusChem is an industry focused organisation accrediting AgVet chemical user course providers.
AusChem is not a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), but was established to support, encourage and promote training and accreditation in the safe, effective and efficient use of AgVet chemicals.
ACUP is the permit issued by Agriculture Victoria that authorises the purchase and use of restricted chemicals on the permit holder’s property or crops.
There are other nationally recognised training programs that provide AgVet training and may better suit an individual’s needs
These programs may not be AusChem accredited but still provide the required nationally accredited units for the ACUP.
The Hub for Learning delivers nationally recognised AgVet chemical training to help participants meet ACUP requirements.

The best GIG in town at The Manningham in Bulleen
By Leigh Siebler
What a night it was. A record 176 people booked for an evening of fun, frivolity, networking and enjoyment to catch up with their industry friends. Garden Centre owners and staff mingled with GIG suppliers, NGIV and media for a wonderful event.
Displays coordinated and designed by Guest Speaker, Carolyn Blackman, were brilliant. Team GIG worked hard to ensure that the event worked beautifully for all our guests.
MC Mike Donsen kept the evening moving in his inimitable style.
Thank you, Carolyn & Joby Blackman for the displays and Mike for MC duties.
Sarah Poynton is the 2026 GIG Industry Champion
MC Mike Donsen read the citation and parts of it are below.
“Sarah has Horticulture in her blood. She is incredibly enthusiastic, has a huge love for our industry and has worked for many excellent Garden Centres. She was nominated for and won a 2023 Global Footprints Horticultural Scholarship Award. Sarah has worked in Garden Centres in the UK. This is a stellar career for such a young person.”
Certificates of Appreciation
Two well deserved Certificates of Appreciation to the van der Horst and Beasley Families were presented.
Acorn Nursery
John van der Horst started his working life at Pinewood Nursery and after a 13-year stint, in March 1985, he created Acorn Nursery in Surrey Hills. Acorn went on to win many Awards
including the Yates Best Large Garden Centre Award. John was a director and President of the NGIV for a five year period and in 2014 was made a Life Member.
Other incredible credentials included Director and President of Plants Plus and GCA, and a member of the MIFGS board.
Beasley’s Nursery
Beasley’s Nursery was established in 1976 by Ron and Merle Beasley, beginning modestly with tree ferns sold from the roadside at the current site. Over time, the nursery grew into a well-known, award-winning garden centre, with family members including Neil and Bill playing key roles in its development. A café was added, enhancing its appeal as a destination, while the nursery also became known for its much-loved aviaries.
Alongside the retail nursery, the Beasley family built a successful landscape and consultancy business, which will continue to operate under family management. The nursery itself has now been sold to Kuranga Native Nursery, who will carry on running the site as a specialised nursery, ensuring its legacy continues.
In closing, if you missed GIG this year, make sure you register for 2027, it was an exceptional evening and one not to miss.
