01 THE LAUNDROMAT PROJECT A flexible space for community engagement

The Laundromat Project is an arts organization serving artists and communities of color. The organization was first conceived in Bed-Stuy and after years of operating from Harlem and the South Bronx, the LP is celebrating its homecoming. The new site is located on Bed-Stuy’s Bustling Fulton street. The LPs diverse program called for a multipurpose space for community gathering, and an array of other activities that the LP has been renowned for, hosting yoga classes to social justice workshops. The new home for the LP was designed with inclusivity in mind, catering to the diverse needs and aesthetics of the neighborhood through art as a means of community building Bagchee architects 2020-2021 Collaborator: The Laundromat Project

02 FREEDOM FARMS | COOPERATION JACKSON PRODUCE SATLL Cooperation Jackson is an emerging vehicle for sustainable community development, economic democracy, and community ownership in Jackson, Mississippi. Freedom Farms Cooperative is one of the many emerging cooperatives under Cooperation Jackson. The group runs the farmland owned by the cooperation, producing fresh produce for the people of West Jackson and actively teaching the community on how to eat healthily. Bagchee Architects has been working with Cooperation Jackson for over two years now, and the Stall project is another way of integrating design to help organizations working for the upliftment of disenfranchised communities. Freedom Farm Produce Stall

The stall is designed on top of a readymade car trailer and can be easily transported. The design utilizes simple folding counters and built-in racks to display the produce while out in the market and also functions as storage on the route. The side panels open up to provide shade and protection from the weather.

Architecture in the age of acceleration

Trash Heap is a multifaceted address to the global waste problem. It is a living organism that incorporates workspaces for innovation, industry, education, and residential, simultaneously adapting to various applications/locations. The proposal seeks to create a set of design parameters to reintegrate waste into the urban landscape. The project does not propose a complete design or a singular final result but focuses on the countless amalgamation of form based on the available waste materials.

The first inception of Trash Heap will be located on the junction of three highly contested neighborhoods of Brooklyn: Bushwick, East Williamsburg, and Bedford Stuyvesant. Adjacent to the broadway J, Z, M train lines. The Project began with analyzing the broder context of brooklyn, by looking into structures and lots that were being neglected and left in disarray.

A key component of our project was upcycling discarded products, with this in mind we went about building some “trash models” using household waste and exploring scale, function, and the relationships between our programs (Live, Work, Play).

04 THE GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS A social condensor of contemporary pleasures

Social Condenser: Programmatic layering upon vacant terrain to encourage dynamic coexistence of activities and to generate through their interference, unprecedented events. -Rem Koolhass The conceptual scenery for the studio is the famous triptych; The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch. Three main scenes linked by a common denominator, sin, create an ambiguous and enigmatic world composed of multiple narratives and micro and macro readings. Like the painting, the studio is placed in an intermediate zone between fantasy and reality, the critical and the imaginative, the concrete and the invented. Instructor: Maria Fullando Fall 2019

05 BARCELONA ARCHERY RANGE EXTENSION David Werber International Travel Fellowship Analog Studio Fundació Enric Miralles

This project was produced in the Enric Miralles Foundation in Barcelona, Spain, during a month-long study abroad studio hosted by the office of Enrique Miralles & Benedetta Tagliabue (EMBT). The site is located on the outskirts of Barcelona in an area known as Val D’Hebron; a large complex of buildings, arenas, and sports facilities built in 1992 for the Barcelona Olympics. The structure is an archery range embedded into the landscape. Today the structure is mostly neglected save for the use as a locker room for local soccer teams. The site slopes down away from the range and meets the sea, there are three distinct levels, the roof, the ground, and the large overpass. The Intervention is an extension to the Archery range with a visitor center that would revitalize the mostly abandoned structure.

The project is placed behind the existing structure connected through two openings. The programs are laid out in a winding path to allow for a playful discovery of open courtyards that bring light in. The winding pathway allows for a slow progression through the space, the pathway emulates the narrow streets of the gothic quarters and is shaded by a colorful roof providing a cool refuge from the Barcelona summer heat.

06 CO-OP CITY COOPERATION JACKSON The objective of the project was to design a proposal for single and collective dwellings for the Co-op Eco-City project under Cooperation Jackson. The cooperation was interested in schemes that incorporated passive methods to sustainable living and a modular scheme that could be easily built by the user and reproduced. The project first started off by analyzing the city of Jackson and the ideas of public shared spaces. This analysis was done by looking into the block site and the existing buildings; as well as analyzing different urban cities around the world in particular the medieval city of Patan in Nepal.

07 BROWNSVILLE ELEMENTARY Play as learning

“The education of a child hovers within the contentious realm of the individual, the family, and their social realm and its organizations. To create the environment for this activity is to manifest a position, an opinion, a bias, etc. within this realm.” -Ali Hocek. The project started by analyzing the pedagogical theory of Maria Montessori, and the programmatic requirements of an elementary school. The proposal focuses on Montessori’s core idea of “play as learning”, and using this ethos to reorganize the conventional elementary school, presenting a space where a child can learn and play anywhere and the two are not mutually exclusive. The architecture promotes flexibility and spontaneity with minimal directed program. The school is both a space for learning, playing and interaction, between the students, the site, and its community.

The site sits between the tall NYCHA housing projects and the low rise residential buildings to the south separated by the J train line. The structure mediates between the two scales and acts as a convergence point. The architecture is empty and skeletal, allowing for program and activity to be injected from both sides of the divide. The architecture of the school is essentially one surface that winds down. Playing with Montessori’s theory that learning can take place anywhere, the architecture provides a wide open surface for learning. The different levels provide a flexible surface on which programs and activities can be determined, the enclosed spaces house mechanical equipment and the main circulation.

That same year the governor, Andrew Cumo, with vice president Biden announced a complete reconstruction of the airport with a 4 billion dollar budget. The studio was tasked with designing an Air Traffic control tower for the new airport. The proposal exposes the secretive control tower by revealing the tower’s programmatic units. Each unit has a distinct facade based on its program.The units are placed between the two vertical circulation towers and the exoskeleton. 09 MYCELIUM ACOUSTIC PANELS Augmented Architecture | bioMATTERS

Mycelium is the nutrient absorbing part of a mushroom, these organisms can be found growing abundantly in soil and other substrates. When dried and the fungus is no longer alive it hardens into a lightweight, and porous material. In recent years Mycelium has Proven to be a great alternative to modern design strategies and manufacturing processes. The Panels incorporate digital fabrication and biological systems to produce a material that is easy to produce and better for the environment. 03. Negative foam molds The Panels are first modeled in Rhino and then used by the CNC machine to route out perfect copies.

04. Process After enough mycelium growth, the mold is left to dry, killing the mycelium and hardening it.

Academic

The Molds are then prepared and sanitiezed for the mycelium to be packed in. They are then placed into plastic bag to retain moisture, allowing the mycelium culture to develop.
