out of the tari to help with Hapū capabilities in the kāinga, this is to be followed by Business Case writing wānanga in 2023.

Well it has been a whirlwind of a year thus far e te iwi! As we approach the middle of the Maramataka Māori and the end of the Gregorian calendar year, we reflect on the kaupapa we have participated in so far. We saw the return of Te Ngutu o Te Manu Site B from South Taranaki District Council to Ngāruahine. Excitement builds as Hapū ready themselves for the return of their DSP lands into their control. Xero training is being run

We have heard the passion from our uri regarding Governance training and look forward to putting a suite of training options together for the iwi.

We enjoyed each other’s company in person and online for our Annual General Meeting and over 200 uri took the opportunity to watch the tāonga ‘Muru’ as it enacted it’s response to the Tūhoe Raids. November started with a bang as 3,000 Taranaki uri descended on Te Whare o Ruaputahanga for Taranaki Tū Mai, it was awesome seeing so many Ngāruahine t-shirts around the hub over the weekend and of course the second placing was the icing on the cake!

We look forward to celebrating Raumati with Te Pō Whakahirahira o Ngāruahine and the Ngāruahine Whānau Day at the Hāwera Pools.

Behind the scenes e te whānau, it’s business as usual for us all! If you are unsure of what events are coming up – feel free to call in and catch up with the whānau in the tari to see what’s happening in our takiwā.

NGUTU O TE MANU

Ka tū te rā whakahirahira ki Te Ngutu o te Manu. He rā whakakotahi i ngā iwi, he rā whanaungatanga, he rā whakapiki wairua, arā he rā e wero ana ki ngā ahuatanga o te muru whenua, o te muru tāngata hoki. E kore au e mate, ka mate ko te mate, ka ora tonu ahau

Dawn broke on 17 September at Te Ngutu o te Manu with the singing and chirping of manu, signalling a significant day for Ngāruahine.

Approximately 300 uri from near and far gathered to celebrate the return of Te Ngutu o te Manu from the South Taranaki District Council, to Ngāruahine. The

ceremony included poi, karakia, the unveiling of a pou whenua, Tītokowaru, planting of rākau rongoā and the dedication of mokopuna, he tohi whėnua, he tohi tāngata, he tohi wairua. Celebrations continued at Kānihi Pā with breakfast, entertainment, the official handover of Te Ngutu o te Manu and hākari. The late Daisy Tihi Noble and Tohe Pakanga Ngatai were acknowledged for their contribution to the return of this whenua with mai Māori being presented to their whānau.

He rā tino whakahirahira mā tātou o Ngāruahine, Ngātimanuhiakai, me ngā uri kei te heke mai.

TE KOROWAI O NGĀRUAHINE TRUST ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2022

This year’s Annual General Meeting was held at Kānihi Pā on Saturday 24 September. It was wonderful to be able to come back together, ‘ā tinana’, after having held the 2021 AGM online. Approximately 150 uri attended the AGM either in person or online. A huge mihi to our MC extraordinaires’, Te Aroha Hohaia and Te Ahu Rei who did an amazing job of keeping the hui on track with a bit of Ngāruahine humour and waiata in the mix.

We thank our Kānihi whānau for their manaakitanga and the beautiful hākari following the hui.

If you missed out on an Annual Report, or if you received a copy that was not bound properly, please contact the tari for another copy.

A digital copy of the Annual Report can also be found on our website: ngaruahine.iwi.nz.

SCHOLARSHIP PORTAL

The Māori Education Trust will be introducing a new portal for iwi scholarships from January 2023. Keep an eye out for the Facebook post.

TUKU AUPIKI NGĀ KETE UARA

This grant is available for uri over 16 years old. Take advantage of this grant which is worth up to $500 and is available for nonfundable courses e.g. noho marae, conferences, wānanga.

Māmā/Pēpi packs will be available soon for newborns. Once the packages are ready, we will launch some comms for you all.

TUPUA TE MAURI (TAIAO)

We received an invitation from Josephine Sullivan, Kaitiaki Supervisor for PKW, to join her team at Koetuku on Mawhitiwhiti Road in mid-October. The goal was to plant some 6,000 trees in the areas they have retired from active grazing on the farm. Tāne and the Ngā Hiwi Maunga crew came out to lend a hand as did Tazmyn and Moesha from our tari. I have to say, I was really impressed by all the work and investment PKW has put into the conversion of this farm to sheep dairy. They have also worked hard on developing a positive relationship with Ōkahu-Inuawai. Alternative land uses such as this will be a major driver in reducing

catchment impacts on freshwater. It is always difficult for landowners to change when they have been conditioned to believe there is only one way for their land to be productive. The debt they get themselves into often makes up their mind for them. Here’s hoping that in time, others see the benefits and follow the example being set. I always enjoy the opportunity to get out of the tari when it comes up and this was a great day.

POUA TE PĀTŪTŪ (KĀINGA)

Te Korowai is currently working with Hapū to support their Hapū Development aspirations. Each Hapū will receive $10k to complete or review their existing strategies with a focus on housing and whenua development. This is the first step in our Iwi Housing and Land Development initiatives.

If you are a trustee on a Marae, Pā or land trust, or a shareholder in Māori Land and want to learn more about this kaupapa, lets kōrero, give me a call on 0210739157.

TE KAWA WHANAKEORA (MAHI)

Calling all landowners and administrators. A lot of us have shares in whenua Māori. Have you ever wondered if your whenua could generate more income and benefits for owners, than leasing it to farmers to support their businesses?

You may think your land is too small to do anything with or you may not know anything about farming, or you are a little disconnected from your whenua and accept the status quo. We may have a better idea for you!

Te Korowai is working with MPI (Ministry of Primary Industries) to help promote their new Māori Agri initiatives which aim to improve the productivity of whenua Māori and provide the opportunity for land administrators and owners to develop their own businesses and create their own jobs for whānau. This outcome aligns perfectly with our Iwi Mahi Pou. For more information visit: https://www. venture.org.nz/projects/branching-out/.Or ring me on 0210739157 to kōrero more about this incredible opportunity.

We have quite a few rangatahi kaupapa happening e te iwi!

Te Kai a te Rangatahi – A series of online uiuinga (interviews) that offer rangatahi fresh experience, inspiration, and mātauranga from different fields of mahi.

He aha te kai a te rangatahi? Ko te mātauranga!

Wānanga - On 28 Whiringa-ā-Rangi, Te Ūkaipō facilitated another wānanga about waiata. Rangatahi also headed to Ngāti Maru to tautoko te kaupapa whakahirahira.

Hākinakina - Pōhutukawa Indoor Netball Competition – Yes whānau! Te Ūkaipō has taken its second shot at facilitating a whānau friendly indoor netball competition. We decided to name it ‘Pōhutukawa’ to go with the rākau that blossoms at this time of year.

Te Ūkaipō has successfully added a touch team

in the Hāwera touch module on a Thursday night packed full of rangatahi ready to bring te ihi me te wehi!

I have also been attending Te Kura o Ngāruahine Rangi and assisting Matua Haoro with his mahi toi workshops. Creating a stronger hononga with rangatahi also takes priority as the only language they speak at the kura is te reo matua, ko te reo Māori.

If any of our whānau would love their rangatahi to be more active in our iwi spaces or be involved with any future Te Ūkaipō projects, feel free to contact me rangihuna@ngaruahine.iwi.nz

Te Rā o Te Uru won the competition section of Ngā Huihuinga o Ngā Tātarakihi - The Tātarakihi Kapa Haka Festival on 28 October at Waitara.

The combined rōpū made up of students from two south Taranaki kura kaupapa Māori, - Te Kura o Ngāruahine / Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngāti Ruanui, move onto the National competition next year which will be held in Whakatū.

A fantastic effort from two kura who’s performance included compositions that celebrated 50 years since the Te Reo Māori petition was presented at Parliament, 40 years since Kōhanga Reo were opened, their stand in this world as “Te Aho Matua” grown tamariki, a tribute to their Koro Archie Hurunui and Kahu Whakatere.

Ka wani kē tamariki mā! He mihi hoki ki a ngā kaiako.

TE PŪAOTANGA O MARU I TE ATATŪ

On Saturday 29 October, uri of Ngāruahine attended the Ngāti Maru Apology ceremony at Te Upoko o te Whenua marae. The official apology from the Crown marked the final milestone for Ngāti Maru in their journey to settlement. The Crown apologised for their breaches of the Treaty of Waitangi against Ngāti Maru tupuna. The apology itself was a hard listen however the handing back of titles to the mokopuna of these tupuna, signalled a promising and vibrant future for generations of Ngāti Maru uri.

KO NGĀRUAHINE E NGUNGURU NEI!!

The Taranaki Whānui Māori Rugby League Tournament 2022 was held in the weekend at Tikorangi. Although it was a wet one, it was awesome to see our whānau out there supporting our teams.

A huge congratulations to our Wahine Toa team who placed 1st and our Tāne team, 3rd equal!
