NĀ TE TUMU WHAKARAE Whakataka te hau ki te uru Whakataka te hau ki te tonga Kia mākinakina ki uta Kia mātaratara ki tai Kia hī ake ana te atākura He tio, he huka, he hau hū Tīhei, ko te mauri ora!

Tēnā anō tātou katoa ngā uri o te Maunga Tītōhea. E mihi ana ki te tau kua pahure, nau mai te tau hou me ngā hua o te koanga. Ka tipu ngā tipu, ka whānau mai ngā punua, ka ora ai te whenua e!

We are in Koanga e te whānau, as things change we are starting to see the kowhai trees in bloom (albeit earlier than usual)– a tohu to get the spuds in the ground, we will start to see the cultural indicators that support us to carry out the traditional practices around the planting and growing of food. Planning and prepping our maara as we plan and prep for our everyday lives.

The days are longer now, providing plenty of sunshine, allowing us more time to complete various tasks in the daylight.

The team continues to deliver on the Ka Ora Taku Toa Strategy with a strong focus on our Ngāruahinetanga Pou and Taiao Pou, completing activities from our 2023 – 2024 Annual Plan.

Hune (June) and Hūrae (July) was a great time of celebration as we farewelled the year that had been and welcomed in the New Year ahead with the following activities: -Supporting Te Reo o Ngāruahine in the delivery of the first Ngāruahine Kura Reo at Oeo Marae - Puanga Tikanga - Launch of the Story Book, Te Rere o Kapuni - Ngāruahine ki te motu

- Te Korowai o Ngāruahine Board of Trustee Elections - 2022-2023 Annual General Meeting - Te Pō Whakahirahira o Ngāruahine - Start of the Ngāruahine Maara Kai Ora Ohu There have been changes within the tari makeup: - We farewelled Rowan Reihana - Ritihia Waller went on maternity leave - Mihi to Matua John Tapiata for his mahi, his contract finished at the end of Ākuhata - We have welcomed in Anita Potts as our Kaituitui Rōpū Hāpai (Financial Coordinator) - Te Ana Stephens comes in as a Kaikaute (Accountant) and when Ritihia returns she will also be coming back as a Kaikaute (Accountant).

On 1 Hepetema (September) all Taranaki iwi converged onto Owae Marae for Te Pūtakerongo signing ceremony, a beautiful kaupapa that also saw our rangatahi share their whakaaro about our tauheke maunga.

Thank you to all who attended our AGM and Pō Whakahirahira – it was a great day and night, enjoyed by all.

HUI-A-TAU 2023

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2023 Uhia mai ko ngā wai o te maunga tītōhea Ngā wai e kore e mimiti ahakoa tukitukitia i te poaka Mau tonu tana mana Māori mana motuhake!

On 26 Here-turi-kōkā (August), 2023, uri from all over the motu came together both online and in person to attend Te Korowai o Ngāruahine Annual General Meeting that was held at Aotearoa Pā. The AGM was emceed and kept on track by the aunty, niece power duo, Ngawai Hernandez-Walden and Emma Gardiner.

Following the agenda, we were also lucky to have a few special presentations from our Te Korowai kaimahi and Board members. Our trustees took to the stage sharing their highlights from the past year (pg 49-52 in the Annual Report). Ritihia Waller spoke about Ka Uru Ora and the Financial Literacy courses she has been facilitating throughout the year. TeUraura Nganeko presented Te Ara Toiroa’s implementation plan, followed by Sarah Mako sharing her experience in that space from a rangatahi perspective. Kawarau Ngaia wrapped up the presentations by discussing the grants and scholarships we offer and showcasing some of the recipients.

The hui was filled to the brim with Ngāruahine wit, humour, waiata and meaningful discussion.

Important pātai were addressed promptly. We acknowledged our outgoing Board members, honouring their contributions and dedication, and finished with a hākari reka.

TE PŌ WHAKAHIRAHIRA O NGĀRUAHINE 2023 Following the AGM, over 200 uri came together on Saturday night to Te Pō Whakahirahira o Ngāruahine.

We took a step back in time to relive a 70’s disco themed party, there were bell bottoms and fur coats, plenty of sequins and a sea of smiles shared throughout the night. It was a momentous occasion, watching whānau come together for a kōrero and kanikani.

A massive mihi to our emcee Tauke King who ensured the night went along smoothly, to our entertainment MaRoPu and DJ BB for keeping the dancefloor packed throughout the event, to Tika Catering for providing a beautiful kai and to all uri who made the night a memorable one.

We also had a few spot prizes e te iwi!

NGĀRUAHINETANGA PUANGA\PUKAPUKA LAUNCH Rāmere (Friday) 14, Hōngongoi (July) was a very momentous day, as we launched the pukapuka “Te Rere o Kapuni”.

This book was developed through a collaboration of Ngāruahine uri ie: Phil and Puhi Nuku, ngā pahake, Maakere Edwards and Te Ahu Rei alongside Ministry of Education. The amazing illustrations and photography were produced by Kaihoahoa, Jackson Cassidy.

Term four will see Te Rere o Kapuni book in kura.

Naumai haeremai ki te kai hākari o Puanga with entertainment and beautiful people. The whānau Makea prepared and cooked our hāngī and served it at 7am.

POUA TE PĀTŪTŪ (KĀINGA) A reminder that Te Korowai is a member of Ka Uruora, an iwi organisation led by our whanaunga from Te Atiawa and Taranaki and set up to support and empower whānau to achieve financial independence, and improve financial wellbeing on their journey to home ownership. Our own Ritihia Waller is a trained facilitator and delivers a 4-week financial literacy course in Te Hāwera, Ka Uruora also operates a very good whānau Saver programme to set yourself up for retirement, first home ownership or tertiary education.

You can register your pēpi, tamariki and moko too. Te Korowai will top up each registered saver by $100 per annum (conditions apply) and if you also whakapapa and register with other participating iwi, there’s even more opportunity to save! I encourage whānau to check out the website and register.

TUPUA TE MAURI (TAIAO) The Maara Kai Pack initiative was designed around people who have no understanding of growing maara kai. It is also about providing whānau with the knowledge and skill set to establish and maintain a maara kai from within the comforts of their home. We aim to accomplish this by providing the learner with the knowledge, tools, and equipment needed in order to successfully establish their maara kai. Encouraging whānau to reinvigorate their own whānau kōrero, connect and share stories through traditional kōrero, mātauranga maara and practices. Keep an eye out for our wānanga!

TE KAWA WHANAKEORA (MAHI) Representatives from Taranaki ( Ngāti Mutunga, Te Atiawa, Taranaki, Ngāruahine, Ngaa Rauru), Waikato-Tainui and Te Uri o Hau Hapū (Ngāti Whātua ki Kaipara) were invited to attend an offshore windfarm study tour to England, Scotland, Belgium and Germany. The purpose of this study tour was to visit operating offshore wind farms, attend the Renewable UK global offshore wind conference and visit companies that service the offshore wind industry in UK and Europe. Another objective of this tour was to gain an understanding on the construction, operation and decommissioning of offshore wind farms; the associated environmental, social and cultural impacts and approaches to mitigating these; an insight into some of the commercial considerations in developing and operating an offshore windfarm; procurement opportunities and where Iwi-Māori need to be positioned to maximise the benefits from offshore wind development, the different international regulatory and approval processes; port and supply chain processes; and understanding the potential.

Myself and Naomi Puketapu-Waite represented Te Korowai o Ngāruahine and will be presenting our findings and learnings at the Ngāruahine Alternative Energy Wānanga which will be held at Aotearoa Pā on 27 and 28 Whiringa-ā-nuku (October) 2023.

Te Ūkaipō has been connecting with multiple kaupapa and kura over the last three months. Some of the kaupapa we have been involved with are kura wānanga, kura Ngohe ako, Pae Rangatahi, Manu Kōrero, facilitating wānanga, mentoring, conferences, Toi workshops and many more. All these experiences and connections will assist Te Ūkaipō moving forward and holding more of our own events and conferences.

Te Ūkaipō also assisted Matua Haoro Hond who works alongside ngā uri o Te Kura o Ngāruahinerangi. Together, with the help of Pāpā Ruakere Hond, we worked on an art piece. The art piece is now displayed at the kura. Check out our Facebook page to view the art piece we produced, - Rangihuna Waller

NGĀRUAHINE KI TE MOTU Waiho i te toipoto, kaua i te toiroa Between 22 Hōngongoi (July) to 25 Hōngongoi, we took our first roadshow out to the motu to connect with whānau who live outside of the kāinga. Across five cities, Ōtautahi, Tāmaki Makaurau, Kirikiriroa, Te Whanganui a Tara and Te Papaioea. Memories were shared and connections were made when over 200 of our uri came to catch up with their whanaunga, some bringing their tamariki to enjoy the venue facilities.

Uri gave Te Korowai feedback on life outside of the kāinga and how best to keep in contact with them, to register and ofcourse to enjoy a kai and kōrero on what is happening back in our homelands.
