Te Korowai was established in 2013 to receive the Settlement Assets. We are also charged with protecting and growing these assets for this and future generations. A crucial responsibility for Te Korowai is a timely review of the Trust Deed. The process to amend the Trust Deed is very important and ensures Te Korowai remains best suited to meet these responsibilities and the needs of Ngāruahine Uri.

Iwi-Hapu combined alternative nine (9) trustees elected with one from each Hapū Electorate (six in total) and three from across the Iwi.

It was hoped that those consultation hui would have identified a preferred option from the two alternatives (b or c) discussed. Had this happened, (along with other amendments to the Trust Deed) you would then be asked to vote for the current model or (a) and the preferred alternative (either b or c). Unfortunately, the feedback was inconclusive and so we have now revised our approach.

In April 2017, the Trustees of Te Korowai began the process of reviewing the Trust Deed. This included reflecting on the current VOTING RIGHTS MODEL used to elect trustees and two alternative models.

You will be asked to vote on two issues in March/April 2019: The first voting paper is a Special Resolution to vote on the proposed amendments to the Trust Deed (other than the provisions relating to the voting rights model for electing Trustees). For this Special Resolution to be passed, support from all Adult Registered Members of NgÄ ruahine is required.

In the Proposal document, each change is numbered and has an explanation and a clause number that cross-references it If you would like to see the proposed changes to the Trust Deed on a document that shows these changes as mark-ups from the current wording of the Trust Deed, please contact the Te Korowai office and we will provide this to you.

In August 2019, you will receive a third voting paper for a Special Resolution where you will be asked to choose between the current model (a) and whichever of the two alternatives (either b or c) receives the most votes on the second voting paper. The outcome of this vote will be to amend the Trust Deed to change the voting rights model. Unless of Adult Registered Members approve this Special Resolution, the current model for electing Trustees will remain in place.

The management team will be conducting five information hui early next month to answer any questions you have about the first and second voting paper. This includes four online hui in case you cannot attend in person (see page 3 for hui details).

It is very important that you understand what the Te Korowai Trustees are proposing so you are able to make an informed vote. Therefore, please take your time, contact the office and attend an information hui if you have any questions. If you do attend a hui, then the management team and I look forward to meeting you.

A new relationship Ngāruahine established from the conference is with the Rauawaawa Kaumātua Charitable Trust. As one of the conference drivers Rauawaawa provides wrap-around services for over 600 Kaumātua in the Waikato rohe. Their goal is simple: ‘Kaumātua warmth and safety’.

Whānau might be familiar with Tasman Resource Limited (TTRL) who have been trying to extract iron sand from the Ngāti Ruanui and Ngaa Rauru rohe.

For three long years our whanaunga and others have challenged TTRL every step of the way, and the year finished in their favour.

Last year the High Court found issues with the Environmental Protection Authority’s approval of TTRL’s application to extract minerals. This places their kaupapa on hold until the High Court has been satisfied.

It’s unclear how long this will take, but neither ha it stopped TTRL turning to Ngāruahine. TTRL have submitted a new application to explore 81,524 hectares (one rugby field is close to 1 hectare). The objective is to determine whether it is worth TTRL’s while to mine for iron in the Ngāruahine rohe.

Our concerns are consistent with Ngāti Ruanui and Ngaa Rauru. We are also concerned about the sheer magnitude of the area TTRL want to explore. It is 12 times larger than their application in the rohe of Ngāti Ruanui and Ngaa Rauru so the impact could be 12 times greater.

While the TTRL application is to explore not mine, if the application is granted, it is one step closer to mining.

Te Korowai has prepared a submission which criticises the short timeframe for responses. Our smaller team with fewer resource has a significant imbalance of resources, time and access to specialist data. This prejudices our involvement right from the very start.

For these reasons and more, Te Korowai and Ngāruahine hapū oppose the TTRL application.

Last year Howie Tamati (Ngāti Mutunga, Te Atiawa) CEO for Sport Taranaki asked if one of their kaimahi could base herself in the office for two days a week.

Te Korowai is pleased to welcome Kendyl Fake who is the Youth Sport Development Lead for Sport Taranaki. Kendyl is the daughter of Paula King (Ngāti Tu) and Murray Fake. Her tupuna are Monica and Graham King.

There is a natural alignment between the Sport Taranaki and Te Korowai vision with healthy whānau and communities being the factor.

At the start of 2019 over seventy young men between the ages of 10-17 years attended a week long wānanga hosted by ŌkahuInuawai at Aotearoa Marae to learn and put into practice life skills to become better men and future role models in their whānau and for Ngāruahine iwi.

Tū Rangatira is a mentoring programme based in schools across South Taranaki.

Mau Rākau or the art of traditional Māori weaponry under Te Whare Tū Taua o Aotearoa is at the heart of this programme that places emphasis on self -discipline.

The Tū Rangatira wānanga or camps operate during the school holidays and are based on marae across the South Taranaki region. This was the second mentoring programme facilitated by MENTOA founder Ōmahuru Robinson (Kanihi-Umutahi, Ōkahu-Inuawai, Ngāti Tu) and his team of inspirational role models.

As part of an open day, kaimahi from Te Korowai along with other supporting groups visited the wānanga where several young men shared their personal testimonies and the positive impact this programme has provided.

This was a testament to MENTOA in helping to improve the the life choices by these young men and in the long term halt and reduce those statistics that haunt our people.

MENTOA shows that a new pathway is possible.

Toni and Charlie Olliver explained how much their son Tyrese has matured because of the guidance and awhi provided by MENTOA. Their son now has goals and a vision of where he wants to be and this is every parent’s hope for their tamariki.

Tyrese, his cousins Jarvis and Diamond as well as their whānau acknowledge tutor Bodene Te Whare who sparked the Board’s interest in Mau Rākau. “Since starting the Tū Rangatira programme Jarvis and Diamond had shown great leadership, and as a senior, Jarvis is earning the respect of the younger boys” said Bodene.

All three young men proudly wear the korowai of their tauheke Koro Tom (Tohe Pakanga) Ngātai at their poutahi graduation ceremony.

“Kia tūpato! Kia tūpato! Tahuti! Tahuti!

It’s gonna blow and get you!”

This was the cry from Aaliyah Ngātai-Olliver (Ngāti Haua) while bursting with laughter. Her cousins joining her with anticipation on their faces watching their bag of harmless baking ingredients that when mixed together, react, grow and explode. The tamariki begin to count, measuring how long it will take before the pantry-bomb explodes. When it does, it splatters them with goop and they laugn even lounder. “Let’s do it again!”, someone chants.

When Jude returned home she brought Meta Māori to Taranaki Maunga and our tamariki.

Jude has over 20 years of experience in the classroom and is driven to raise science and digital that could lead to exciting careers.

“Our tamariki are naturally nosey. They like to pull things apart, turn them upside down and see what makes them tick. Science is all about exploration and being nosey is a perfect prerequisit” says Jude.

This was one of the science experiments Jude Cornellius Ngatai (Ngāruahine, Ngaa Rauru, Te Whakatōhea) and Liliana Clarke (Ngā Puhi, Tainui) organised for last years holiday programme. Jude and Liliana are the founders of Meta Māori Science and Digital whose vision is to excite tamariki into the science and digital world.

The first day most parents were dragging and bribing their tamariki to the programme. At the end of the day the opposite was true and parents were greeted with enthusiastic and smelly mini-chemistry scientists following a big day of being encouraged to be nosey.

freshwater kōura.

Their shouts of “We got one!!” led others running to see. From chemists one day to environmental scientists the other the one week programme was jam packed testing the quality of the lake and identifying species. The tamariki were grouped into small teams and their competitive nature shone through as they posed questions, shared reflective thoughts and ideas with each other to complete their tasks For Te Korowai this kaupapa was a pilot, and like all pilots the objective is to learn and understand what is involved in running the project and the outcomes.

Te Korowai doesn’t have to do everything, not when there are talented whānau who are doing amazing things anyway. “Supporting Jude and Liliana to run this programme in Hāwera was a great partnership that led to happy tamariki and whānau” said Te Ahu Rei, Iwi Engagement Manager.

Te Korowai and Meta Māori will be working together as part of the 2019 Curious Minds community science project. This kaupapa also involves local hapū, Auroa and Manaia Primary Schools focusing on the health of the Kaupokonui River.

When applications closed, we had 17 applications and the Board awarded scholarships to 10 uri. Each scholarship is valued at $2,000 for the 2019 academic year. Scholarships were awarded to: Alison Brooks, Aotahi Keepa, Bonita Bigham, Corban Agar, Dion Luke, Kavahna Cooper-Ruri, Kayla Hemara-Wahanui, Kelsey Adamson, Ngawhira Kennedy and Samme-Sara Harrop-Marriner.

Alison is the grand daughter of George and Gloria Kerehoma. Her mother is Marylinda Brooks and she attributes her success to her whānau . Ali spent her early years as a Police Officer in the South Taranaki and after some contemplation left the force and began her journey to attain formal qualifications.

Te Reo Māori is Aotahi’s first language and he is in his second year of this degree to become a Doctor. In 2017 Aotahi was the Head Boy and Dux at Hato Paora.

Aotahi talked about the Te Korowai vision ‘Ka ora taku toa’ and the importance of health and wellbeing if our vision is to become a reality.

Aotahi is from the Hawe and Kahupukoro whānau and is the son of Marisa Balle.
