THE WHALES

There were 12 whales that were found washed up on our Taranaki coastline. There may be one more. Nine were found at Kaūpokonui Beach and 3 were found near the Ōtākeho river mouth towards Tawhitinui Marae. I went down to the ones near Tawhitinui to help because that’s my hapū, Ngāti Hāua.

I had to wear wet weather gear and red and orange long sleeved gloves for protection. We put lanolin cream on our wrists, face and hair to help protect against infection.

My job was a ‘PULLER’ which meant I was hooking blubber and some soft stuff that was coming off the whales as it was being cut. It was hard work and very tiring. We were not allowed to feed ourselves so we had medics feeding kai to us and they wiped our faces too. If we were itchy they would have to

scratch us as well. They also gave us drinks of water when we needed it.

We got some ‘SPERMACETI’ (a waxy substance found in the head cavity of the sperm whale. Spermaceti is created in the spermaceti organ inside the whale’s head). I learnt about the chambers of the sperm whale’s head. There are 3 of them next to each other. The blowhole is in front of the sperm whale’s head.

The whales are our taonga, we must treat them with respect. They mean a lot to us as Māori and I feel very sad with what happened to them.

Because of where the whales beached, the subtribes involved were Ngāti Tū and Ngāti Hāua.

However, some people from Ngāti Wai on Northland’s East Coast came to offer their expertise as they have got experience in how to deal with whale strandings. There were heaps of people that came to pay their respects. Many of my own family members came including my dad and uncles and cousins.

We didn’t use any electric tools to cut the blubber or any other part of the whale. It was very hard to get the skull out because of how big it was.

The skull, jawbone and teeth might either be used for taonga or for our marae.

They are buried for a period of time to let Papatūānuku do her job by cleaning them up. It is not very easy to get the sand that you have to put on the jawbones.

TE NGUTU O TE MANU 150TH COMMERATIONS Prepared by the Te Ngutu Kōmiti

The 7 September 2018 marks 150 years of one of two skirmishes at Te Ngutu o Te Manu between Crown forces and Māori led by Lieutenant Colonel Thomas McDonnell, with an earlier attempt taking place on 21 August 1868. However it would be remiss to commemorate this event of our local history and ignore other equally important skirmishes that happened prior to and after the Tītokowaru War. Referred to in the history books as the South Taranaki Campaign, the attack carried out by Tītokowaru and Signing of Ngāruahine's Treaty Settlement at Te Ngutu o Te Manu - August 2014 his men at Turuturu Mōkai redoubt on July 12, 1868 in which several members of Crown forces died gave rise to the attack on Te Ngutu o Te Manu. The 150 years The final skirmish of the South Taranaki Campaign since this skirmish must also be commemorated. was the sacking of Parihaka on 5 November 1881.

On 7 November 1868 an attack on Moturoa Pā near Waverley led by Lieutenant Colonel George Whitmore also must be remembered and last but not least we must also remember how Tītokowaru chose Taurangaika Pā near Nukumaru as the place that he and his men would take on Crown forces once again.

However for reasons unknown this skirmish did not eventuate. Instead on the eve of the battle, February 1869, Tītokowaru walked away and was reported to have gone inland to his whanaunga Ngāti Maru where he remained for a length of time before returning to Ngāruahine.

To commemorate the 150 year skirmishes that took place at Te Ngutu o Te Manu while at the same time acknowledging the South Taranaki Campaign as a whole. A series of events have been planned to take place around various locations in the South Taranaki district.

POI WORKSHOP This workshop provides an opportunity to make and learn poi. It is also the chance to hear the stories around poi, its practise and use amongst the various tribes of Taranaki.

RONGOᾹ WORKSHOP This workshop will provide mirimiri (massage Māori). Take the opportunity to experience this very old form of healing. It is also an opportunity to learn how to make rongoā (Māori medicine and ointments).

HARAKEKE WORKSHOP This workshop is one of many Māori art forms that is still widely practiced and used today. Come along and learn how to prepare harakeke for use in kete making, flowers, earrings, table mats to name a few.

MOKOPAPA WORKSHOP In the wake of recent debate of moko kauae (chin tattoo), we are holding a workshop around one of the oldest art forms in Māoridom. It is your opportunity to come along and hear first hand the personal journeys and stories from the many women in our local district who wear moko kauae today.

Te Ngutu o Te Manu Reserve / TSB Hub

150 YEAR COMMEMORATION CEREMONY A dawn commemoration ceremony will take place concluding with a tree planting to mark the commemoration.

We will return to The Hub for refreshments which completes the formal ceremonial part of the commemorations. This will be followed by whakangahau (entertainment) showcasing a range of talented up and coming local artists and entertainers.

The commemorations will close Friday 7 September at 3pm.

BUS TOUR INFORMATION Prepared by the Te Ngutu Kōmiti

A series of coach tours have been planned as part of the week long 150 year commemorations and will be run over three days, 4-6 September.

The tours will take in three sites where skirmishes were held between Crown forces and Māori in 1868 -69 and referred to as the ‘South Taranaki Campaign’.

There will be three tours each day to: • Tauranga Ika Pā near Nukumaru • Turuturu Mōkai and Tawhiti Museum in Hāwera • Parihaka Pā near Pungarehu in central coastal Taranaki The cost is $10 per persons per tour.

If you wish to take all the tours, we recommend you make all three bookings at once and choose which day you will take for each tour.

Coaches will depart from the Hāwera High School car park at 8.30am beginning and finishing with karakia (prayer to keep everyone who is travelling safe).

20/20/20 RAUTAKI REO LAUNCH 20-20-20 RAUTAKI REO The Ngātai whānau of Ngāti Hāua developing their whānau reo plan with the support of Aunty Ma.

After months of planning and financial support from Te Mātāwai, Te Reo o Ngāruahine launched the 2020-20 rautaki reo (language strategy) at Tawhitinuai Pā on 29 June 2018.

The aim of this program is to support Ngāruahine whānau increase te reo Māori spoken at home, on the marae and the wider community.

Motivated by the decline of te reo Māori spoken on the marae Phil and Puhi Nuku started offering free reo classes last year. This was well supported and led to the creation of Te Reo o Ngāruahine Incorporated.

The development of the 20-20-20 programme drew its inspiration from kōrero by Ruakere Hond.

“It is not the losing of reo that we are in danger of, but speaking. It takes one generation to lose the reo, and three to restore”.

Phil Nuku believes that Ngāruahine possesses a huge amount of untapped te reo potential, and the 2013 census supports this with 30.2% of Ngāruahine able to hold conversations in reo compared to 18.4% for the rest of the country.

The Ngāruahine strategy promotes te reo māori based on intergenerational engagement.

“Creating opportunities for Kuia and Koko to kōrero with mokopuna in the reo is something really special this program encourages. It is designed to support whānau to utilise the language skills they already have and build on in their everyday lives”, said Puhi Nuku.

There are three strands that make up the programme and includes mentors working with Ngāruahine whānau to develop and implement whānau reo plans.

Reo wānanga designed for the whānau are led

by Ngāruahine te reo Māori speakers, whom live outside of Taranaki and are keen to support this kaupapa.

The third strand is research and includes interviewing and recording Ngāruahine kaumātua. These interviews will lead to resources for all of Ngāruahine. This component will be supported by Te Korowai.

“Our whānau has four generations living between eight households across Aotearoa and Australia. We needed a plan that would work for everyone to learn kupu hou (new words), karakia and waiata from our hapū said Tanya Ngatai (Ngāti Hāua).

Fun and kai ensure a successful programme, and this will capture everyone from the whānau from mokopuna to kaumātua. Every month the plan could involve the whānau coming together for a shared kai utilising their reo skills. Whānau living elsewhere can skype or ring in.

To encourage whanau, Te Reo o Ngāruahine started the 20-20-20 facebook page to post videos, messages where members can support each other.

“I love that this is about learning informal reo in our homes supporting each other. Since doing this I have been speaking more everyday. I have post-it labels all over the walls of my house to help me to learn new words and sentence structures” said Tanya.

MĀORI VISUAL ARTS WĀNANGA

Registrations are open for 30 Taranaki artists to attend this wānanga themed ‘Taonga Parāoa, Taonga Iti’. The theme pays recognition to the recent stranding of 13 parāoa (sperm whales) along the South Taranaki coastline.

Māori Business Network Event An absolute success Network coordinater Ana Davis

Te Korowai hosted He Toronga Pakihi ki Taranaki, the Taranaki Māori business network with the support of Te Puni Kōkiri and Venture Taranaki.

With over 70 attendees it was an evening of positive promotions and networking.

"There was a real excitement and we were very proud to host the wider network, but especially Ngāruahine uri who run their own businesses" said Allie HemaraWahanui, Pouhautū (General Manager).

Having previously purchased her own business, Ana Davis (network spokesperson) saw the value of creating avenues for Māori business owners to connect and engage. This lead to the creation of the network with the support of Venture Taranaki.

Tama Blackburn (Nau Mai Tours, New Plymouth) said, “This has got to be one of the best network events I have been to, I’m very impressed”.

“He Toronga Pakihi ki Taranaki is a Māori Business network that offers mentoring support and works to keep Māori business owners informed about the opportunities that are available for them”, said Ana Davis, network spokesperson.

Madison Ropiha and Alescha Veil from Hāwera High School enjoyed the evening agreeing that it was a really good experience. They learned a lot and never knew there were so many amazing Māori in business.

The event started with distributing coffee-like cards to attendees. People were challenged to network with five other businesses, confirmed with a stamp on the card that entitled participants to go into prize draws.

Angela Kerehoma from Sweet Aggie’s provided the coffee and catering she said “Tonight has been great.

We need more events like this. There are so many other Ngāruahine businesses out there who would benefit from this”.

Prizes included: • One nights accommodation, dinner and breakfast for two at Dawson Falls Lodge.

TE TAPUAE ROA A bold new economic direction Source: Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa

The Tapuae Roa: Make Way for Taranaki project is a collaborative effort between all councils local business leaders, iwi and central government.

The project takes on a whole-of-region approach and focuses on unlocking the best opportunities for regional economic growth and the on-going success of the region.

A lead team made up of representatives from local businesses and organisations, iwi and central and local government were responsible for the strategic direction and oversight of the project. This comprised our Te Ātiawa Chair Liana Poutū, Deputy Chair Wharehoka Wano and Te Pahunga (Marty) Davis of Ngā Rauru.

The Tapuae Roa Strategy was launched in August 2017 and identified a long list of potential opportunities to help form a regional action plan.

Subsequently, the Regional Action Plan was released in early April, when the Minister of Regional Development, Shane Jones announced Central Government funding of: • $13.34 million for the Taranaki Crossing • $5m for the Taranaki Cathedral restoration and upgrades • $100,000 a business case for a New Energy Development Centre • $100,000 for a stock-take of Māori enterprise and education in Taranaki

$100,000 an initial feasibility study to establish innovation precincts across Taranaki $50,000 towards the establishment of ‘H2 Taranaki $50,000 for a business case to develop a Taranaki Future Foods Accelerator. $250,000 for the development of a business guide to tree planting on Taranaki hill country farms $400,000 for a SH43 business case $175,000 towards future food – major regional food opportunities

Liana Poutū said “The Action Plan is an ambitious roadmap that will transition Taranaki’s future towards a greener, cleaner space and promote diversification into emerging technologies, high quality foods and tourism. Of course, we are also about rebuilding strength in our regional communities as hubs for economic growth”.

Besides providing a new direction for economic development, Tapuae Roa will also feed into the long-term-plans of all the councils in the region, influence private sector investment decision making and contribute to the future activities and investment decisions of the iwi of Taranaki.

TAIAO TAIORA Taranaki Iwi launches their Iwi Environmental Plan

Te Korowai o Ngāruahine (Te Korowai) supported Taranaki Iwi launch their Iwi Environmental Management Plan ‘Taiao Taiora’.

Taiao-Taiora is the result of a two year journey. The plan provides direction, purpose and a framework that empowers hapū, marae/pā, and whānau to be effective kaitiaki in their rohe.

Taiao-Taiora Iwi environmental plan also informs the wider community, central and local government and anyone undertaking activities in the Taranaki Iwi rohe, about Taranaki iwi priorities.

The vision is ‘Ko te oranga o te whenua, ko te oranga o te tangata’, the health of the environment is the health of the people. This vision is underpinned by environmental action around a number of key pou: •

Ranginui rāua ko Tāwhirimatea/Air

•

Tangaroa-ki-Tai/Coastal area

•

Tangaroa-ki-Uta/Freshwater

Tane/Vegetation and habitat

Each of the pou sets out key aspirations and outcomes that can support the achievement of a healthy, vibrant and sustainable environment.

“The document is a well-considered and thoughtful plan that can support Taranaki Iwi on their bold and brave journey. Whānau can find a copy of the plan on the Taranaki Iwi website” says Louise Tester (Mgr research and policy at Te Korowai).

Te Korowai will start their journey in developing a Ngaruahine Iwi Environmental Plan that reflects the aspirations of Ngāruahine. We look forward to engaging hapū, marae/pā, and whanau who wish to join us in this adventure.
