NFR MILITARY HONORS PRESENTED BY

TONIGHT, WE HONOR CLINTON ROMESHA, CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT

For Clinton Romesha, the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo® represents family in more ways than one.

His grandfather, Aury Smith, was a World War II veteran and also a bareback rider. The Rodeo lifestyle runs deep for Romesha and his family.

“I grew up in a rural town in Northern California and we were ranchers and farmers, and grew alfalfa,” Romesha says. “I had to milk dairy cows every day before school and that Western lifestyle is a part of my family history. Grandpa Smith was a huge in uence in my life growing up. He was part of rodeo most of his life. I remember hearing the stories about that and we would always go to the bullaramas and the rodeos down in Red Blu , California. Having that connection with rodeo makes the NFR honor even more special. The Western lifestyle represents the true de nition of American spirit. This country was founded on so many of our values and principles.”

Grandpa Smith’s life lessons helped Romesha handle the adversity of battle, which culminated at Combat Outpost Keating, Kamdesh District, Nuristan Province, Afghanistan on October 3, 2009. On that fateful day, Romesha saved many of his fellow soldiers and later earned the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions.

“When I was 18, I joined the Army and I remember listening to stories that Grandpa Smith and my dad told,” Romesha says. “My dad did two tours in Vietnam as an infantryman, while Grandpa Smith was a combat engineer on Normandy Beach. They never really shared stories about their combat experiences, but what they did talk about was the camaraderie and their old buddies.”

Because he didn’t hear a lot about what combat was like, Romesha wasn’t sure what to expect when he encountered the hell that is the battle eld.

“What surprised me the most wasn't about how angry you are in the moment of getting shot at or having tragic things happen to your buddies or anybody around you, but the surprising thing was the love and compassion that you see during battles,” Romesha says. “That day we were outgunned and outnumbered, and we were trying to survive because we loved each other. It is di cult to describe how much love you witness during combat. Soldiers will do amazing things and take orders and try to save their brothers. It is that love and loyalty that will literally get them to stand up and run through the gates of hell for one another. They don’t do that because they are scared or because they are angry, they do heroic things because they love each other so much. That is such an abstract thing, and I never thought about that until I went to combat. I think that is what separates us from our enemy a lot of the time. We are ghting because of our love for each other and they are ghting to kill us and with hate in their hearts.”

EACH NIGHT, WE SPOTLIGHT HONOREES WHO HAVE GONE ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY IN DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES AND ARENAS.

EMPLOYEE SERVICE AWARDS

A strong team is the reason why the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is so successful in front of and behind the scenes. Meet the best-of-the-best NFR team members during this special ceremony.

The day a Congressional Medal of Honor is draped around the neck of a soldier is a day of high honor, but also of solemn remembrances. Prior to President Barack Obama awarding Romesha with the Medal, he mentioned the bonds Romesha experienced.

"Throughout history, the question has often been asked, ‘Why? Why do those in uniform take such extraordinary risks? And what compels them to such courage?’” Obama asked. “But ask Clint and any of these Soldiers who are here today, they will tell you. Yes, they ght for their country, and they ght for our freedom. Yes, they ght to come home to their families. But most of all, they ght for each other, to keep each other safe and to have each other's backs."

Romesha appreciates the Medal of Honor he was awarded, but he also understands his responsibility to share the stories of the others who were also heroes.

“Even though I received the recognition for my actions, if it wasn't for those 52 other Americans there that day and eight that gave their lives, I would not be here,” Romesha says. “The Medal of Honor allows me to shine some light on their memories and their sacri ces. That is what is truly special to me about this honor.”

Congressional Medal of Honor Citation

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty:

Sta Sergeant Clinton L. Romesha distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a Section Leader with Bravo Troop, 3d Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, during combat operations against an armed enemy at Combat Outpost Keating, Kamdesh District, Nuristan Province, Afghanistan on October 3, 2009.

On that morning, Sta Sergeant Romesha and his comrades awakened to an attack by an estimated 300 enemy ghters occupying the high ground on all four sides of the complex, employing concentrated re from recoilless ri es, rocket propelled grenades, anti-aircraft machine guns, mortars and small arms re. Sta Sergeant Romesha moved uncovered under intense enemy re to conduct a reconnaissance of the battle eld and seek reinforcements from the barracks before returning to action with the support of an assistant gunner.

Sta Sergeant Romesha took out an enemy machine gun team and, while engaging a second, the generator he was using for cover was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade, in icting him with shrapnel wounds. Undeterred by his injuries, Sta Sergeant Romesha continued to ght and upon the arrival of another soldier to aid him and the assistant gunner, he again rushed through the exposed avenue to assemble additional soldiers. Sta Sergeant Romesha then mobilized a ve-man team and returned to the ght equipped with a sniper ri e. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sta Sergeant Romesha continually exposed himself to heavy enemy re, as he moved con dently about the battle eld engaging and destroying multiple enemy targets, including three Taliban ghters who had breached the combat outpost’s perimeter. Visit www.army.mil/medalofhonor/romesha/citation.html for the complete citation.
