MEMORIAL NIGHT

TONIGHT, WE HONOR A CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT AND REMEMBER THOSE WE LOST

Command Sergeant Gary Littrell, Congressional Medal of Honor Army Command Sgt. Maj. Gary Littrell's more than two decades in service can likely be summed up by his leadership during a precarious situation in Vietnam. The skilled Ranger was advising a small battalion of soldiers when they got trapped on a hillside by an enemy 10 times their size.

On April 4, 1970, Littrell’s unit moved south toward the Cambodian border to search out enemy ghters and call for airstrikes against them. When they reached the top of a hill, they realized they were surrounded by about 5,000 North Vietnamese troops.

Over the next four days, Littrell and the 23rd Battalion fought for their lives. According to his Congressional Medal of Honor citation, he showed "near superhuman strength."

“Tonight, the honor isn’t about me, it is about honoring the medal and all of those who give their lives so I could wear that medal,” Littrell says. “Wearing the Congressional Medal of Honor means that I'm a representative of it because the medal does not belong to me. I wear it for every American who has given his or her life on the battle eld.”

HONORING OUR DEPARTED FRIENDS

Barry Burk is described as the greatest roper never to win a world title. This 17-time NFR tie down quali er was reserve champion from 1967-73 and 1975.

Denton Payne grew up with a rope in his hand and turned his passion into a several time NFR team roper, continued to be involved by teaching others the sport that meant so much to him.

Bud Monroe earned a spot at the NFR 12 consecutive years with 8 nishes the top 5 in the world. He nished second twice before breaking through to win the 1986 Saddle Bronc Riding World Championship.

JW Stoker built a career spanning 7 decades trick riding and roping. He was named PRCA Specialty Act of the Year in 1985 and 1986 at the age of 59.

These folks who passed in 2022 made an indelible impact on rodeo and they will never be forgotten.

Cotton Rosser turned a rodeo competitor career ending accident into one of the greatest contracting rms in history. Known as the “P.T. Barnum” of rodeo, he took his productions to a new level showcasing not only the sport but also the showmanship as well.

Blue Stone found his love for bull riding at a young age and went on to prove he was one of the back-to-back Bull Riding World Championships in 2001 and 2002, as well as a gold medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Cagliari

along with her sister started out dazzling crowds all over the country as a trick riding duo. She went on to become the WPRA Barrel Racing Rookie of the Year in 1980, and quali ed for the NFR in 1981.

Fred Dorenkamp along with his wife Norma owned and operated Dorenkamp Rodeo Company from 1980 until 1993. In 2013 they were awarded the Donita Barnes Contract Personnel Lifetime Achievement Award.

Charmayne James, the 11-time Barrel Racing World Champion, is the second of three Vegas NFR Icon honorees as her banner is placed in the arena rafters. Plus, World War II and Korean War hero John C. Cole is honored.

Bull-riding legend and 9-time PRCA World Champion Ty Murray is the third 2022 NFR Icon Award winner and his banner is raised to the Thomas & Mack Center rafters. Also, the top NFR roughstock is recognized for the role they play.

Jerome Robinson quali ed for 11 NFR’s in the bull riding. During his time in the pro ranks he served as Bull Riding Director, Vice President of the PRCA Board, one term on the NFR Commission, and was on the research and development committee for building the new headquarters in Colorado Springs.

Ardith Bruce joined the WPRA in 1960 winning the Barrel Racing World Championship in 1964. She was the rst WPRA World Champion to go to the left barrel rst, and landed in the top 15 for seven consecutive years.

Mildred Klingemann’s greatest passion was rodeo and she was a PRCA secretary and timer for nearly six decades and was a nalist for the 2017 Donita Barnes Personnel Lifetime Achievement Award.

Jimmy Powers loved life and helping others. He produced 2 AQHA Championship Steer Wrestling Horses: Yellow Dog and Bad Motor Scooter. Jimmy went on to serve 36 years on the National Finals Rodeo Committee.

Charlene Jesperson got interested in rodeo watching her dad rope, this led to several California State barrel racing championships and a quali cation to the NFR. A lifelong racer, at 78 years old ran the second fastest time out of 700 contestants at a barrel racing event in Las Vegas.

Danny Torricellas was one of the best all around hands to ever come out of the Northwest. He won a NIRA calf roping national title, four steer wrestling titles at the famed Pendleton Roundup, and multiple NFR appearances in both tie down and steer wrestling.

Je Copenhavor was the son of World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider and Hall of Famer, Deb. Je chose the timed events. He quali ed 6 times in the 70’s for the NFR and was crowned World Champion Tie Down Roper in ’75.

Marian Ruth Urbanek, a PRCA gold card member, worked as a secretary and timer for 50 plus years. She was twice a timer for the NFR.

Neal Gay entered all 3 rough stock riding events along with steer wrestling. His contestant years were quickly overshadowed by his stock contracting and production skills and is credited with bringing rodeo to a national television audience.

Buster Record Jr. will be remembered as one of rodeo’s good guys. He was a great horseman, a erce competitor, and a man willing to help anyone at any time. Buster was a 16-time National Finals Steer Roping quali er and 2002 World Champion.

Rich Peterson started picking up broncs in 1969. He worked for several years for Mike Cervi and then moved on to Beutler and Son. In 1981 he was selected as a pickup man for the NFR.

Don Peterson had a great passion for horses, especially those that bucked. The NFR and Canadian National Finals contractor won numerous awards including two bareback world titles. His two favorite horses were H1 High Chaparral and X23 Coyote and each preceded him in death.

Bernis Johnson was a Texas all around hand, qualifying for the NFR multiple times in the bareback and bull riding. He will also be remembered for owning one of the most famous bareback horses in history, 5x Bareback Horse of the Year and Hall of Fame inductee Sippin’ Velvet.

Sta Sergeant Clinton Romesha, a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient and grandson of a bronc rider, is honored for his heroic actions during the 2009 Battle of Kamdesh during the war in Afghanistan.

Josh Frost is the 2022 PRCA Linderman Award winner, which is one of the most prestigious awards in ProRodeo that recognizes a cowboy who won at least $1,000 in three events.

Also, World War II veterans Robby Robinson, Jr. and Bill Feddersen are honored.
