What a great honor and privilege it is for me to serve as NFDA president over the coming year. Thank you for this opportunity. My dad (Bill Derry) and uncle (Jim Derry) acquired Field in 1990, and the NFDA and its members played a significant role in helping Field enjoy the growth that it has, as well as build many lifelong friendships in the process. The NFDA and its members have given significantly to the Field and Derry families, so for that we thank you. We are all in the people business, and I’ve been amazed at the quality of people in our industry and enjoy learning from so many in our association. “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” Albert Einstein wrote this in a letter to his son in 1930, and it resonates with what we all are dealing with today as we navigate these unprecedented times through COVID-19 and economic uncertainty. The core purpose of the NFDA it to help our members thrive in the global marketplace. This all comes down to maximizing member value. It is during the tough stretches that this value is truly realized and perhaps compounded, so I thank you for your continued support of the NFDA. If you know of other companies that may value from the NFDA, please remember there is a $1,000 referral incentive program, plus it is better for all of us when our membership and association grows. Like the old saying goes, “the more you put in, the more you’ll get out.” Part of my plea
to you is if you want to get more out of the NFDA, you should put more into the NFDA; stay connected, be engaged, attend the events, join a committee, provide solutions / ideas on how to improve the association, etc. You’ll see returns if you do! The NFDA has been around for more than 50 years, and what has gotten us to where we are today will not get us to where we need to go as an association over the next 50 years! The NFDA board had a strategic planning session in July 2020 focused on updating our vision and ensuring we adapt/improve our strategy to ensure we deliver member value year over year! That is what it’s all about! I want to personally thank Doug Ruggles for his leadership over the last year; he’s always focused on driving member value and did a great job of this in a pretty challenging environment. I also want to thank Kelly Charles, our associate chair; Keven Simmer, our incoming vice president, and welcome Jon Queenin, who is joining the board and taking Kelly Cole’s spot as he exits from the Board, and recognize the remaining Board members: Don Haggerty (happy retirement!), Craig Penland, Scott Somers, Jodie Thinnes, and Bryan Wheeler. I wish you and your families a safe and healthy summer and look forward to seeing you at upcoming industry events, whether in person or virtually.
